LEISURE CENTRE PRAISES COMMUNITY FOR “FANTASTIC” FLOOD SUPPORT

THE management of Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre have praised the local community after they came to the aid in their time of need. Last Thursday, October 8, the Centre suffered a major flooding incident when water backed up from a blocked drain and flooded into the newly completed extension.

This was a pre-existing drain taking surface water off Oxley Park and rainwater off the roof of the Centre’s bowls hall into the main surface water drain. The blockage resulted in gallons of water backing up against the new bi-fold

doors, filling the new courtyard and entering the new Oxley’s café.

Thankfully, assistant centre manager Lee Hible, who was on duty that morning, acted quickly in summoning emergency services and local support to assist and as a result, a more serious catastrophe was averted. Andy Clarke, Chief Executive of the Trust, said “The response to calls for help was absolutely amazing with many local residents, customers, volunteers, staff and trustees all turning up to bail out the water. “We had offers of pumps, diggers – anything we need-

ed with many people turning up to help sweeping out water as fast as it was coming in – it was an absolutely fantastic effort from everyone who all showed true community spirit. “It was that community spirit that saved the Centre in 2013 and it was great to see the same spirit again when we needed it. “On behalf of all the trustees and myself, we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for their support, not only that day in the face of such adversity, but for their continued support and best wishes since we re-opened.”

Fraudster sentenced to three years in prison AN ECCLESFIELD recruitment agency consultant has been jailed for three years after fraudulently claiming wages of over £200,000. Thomas Armin, 30, of High Street, Ecclesfield, pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation on 10 July 2020 and was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court on October 8. Officers arrested Armin in April 2019, when the force received a call from a recruitment agency reporting one of their employees had been claiming wages fraudulently for over a year. Detective Constable Natalie Bettison, investigating said: “Armin’s actions surfaced after a meeting between his employer and one of their clients, where it was alleged that the client owed the agency money.

“Following the meeting, Armin called his boss admitting that he had ‘been stupid’ and ‘done things wrong’ and it transpired that he had defrauded his employers out of thousands of pounds. They took the right steps and reported Armin to police, who was arrested.” During police interviews, Armin revealed he had been setting up false workers on the company’s payroll system and recording his own bank details against their names. He then submitted fake timesheets meaning that each month their ‘wages’ went straight into his account. DC Bettison added: “Armin submitted timesheets for seven people, making sure they were ‘signed off ’ by real site managers as to keep up the illusion. “These timesheets had eventually been picked up by the client

and flagged to the recruitment agency as being suspicious. “By the time we investigated him he had spent all the money, bar a few thousand pounds. He did not keep records, but the total amount of money was around £200,000. Armin’s motives were clear - to enhance his overall lifestyle. “It is right that he has been served a custodial sentence today, he shamelessly defrauded his own employer and he also used the names of people he had worked with in the past to do so. “This was distressing for them and their families to be implicated in the investigation. “We take this type of criminality incredibly seriously and we understand the impact it can have on businesses and employers.”

MP Calls for clarity on Green Belt housing plans

MIRIAM Cates, the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, has urged Sheffield City Council to be clearer about its plans to authorise the building of up to 10,000 new houses on Sheffield’s Green Belt.

could lead to development in areas that are entirely unsuitable, as these sites are often cheaper and easier to develop than those which have already seen some building in the past.

As part of its consultation on Sheffield’s new Local Plan, the Council has asked residents to endorse options that would see either 5,000 or 10,000 new homes built on land that would have to be removed from protected Green Belt status.

“The Council should first identify which sites it intends to remove from the Green Belt, and only then seek the consent of the people to allow them to be assigned for housing development.”

In her response to the consultation, Miriam Cates, whose constituency includes areas in the Upper Don Valley and in Ecclesfield parish, criticised the Council for not revealing which parts of the Green Belt would be threatened under their plans. Mrs Cates commented: “It is important to be constructive in a consultation such as this, and to recognise that the need for housing will require us to make some decisions as a city. “But it is also important to be aware of the facts and to avoid giving consent to a proposal that lacks the necessary detail. “I have serious concerns that giving general consent now to building on the Green Belt

The MP is also seeking clarification on why the Council has not recommended the inclusion of the Hollin Busk site in Stocksbridge in the Green Belt as part of the parallel review. She added: “Following the refusal of planning permission in August, the best way to protect Hollin Busk for future generations would be to recognise that it belongs as part of Sheffield’s Green Belt. “I would urge everyone in Sheffield to take part in this consultation and to make sure that they have their voices heard in deciding the future of our city.” The consultation is open until October 13 and can be accessed through the City Council’s website.

FORMER ECCLESFIELD OFFICER PASSES AWAY TRIBUTES have been paid to a police officer who served in the Ecclesfield area at the beginning of his career. Roads Policing Officer Stephen Jackson, known to friends and colleagues as ‘Jacko’, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday October 10, surrounded by his wife and children, following a short but brave battle with cancer. He was 51. Steve joined South Yorkshire Police in 1997, based at Ecclesfield. He transferred to the Roads Policing Group in 2005 and his last posting was working on Team Four. In a tribute, South Yorkshire Police said: “Steve was a bubbly character, always full of life and a committed family man. He was a passionate roads policing officer, a role that he absolutely loved and

was loved by so many friends, family and colleagues.” Roads Policing Inspector, Craig Clifton, said: “Steve was an infectiously larger than life character who was an extremely passionate roads policing officer. “He was known to his colleagues as ‘Mr Noisy’ as he wasn’t one for sitting in the corner quietly and made his presence known wherever he was. “I also liked to call him Mr Grumpy as he was very easily frustrated when he didn’t agree with things and his sulks earned him many laughs with his team. “You will be sadly missed Jacko, rest in peace and try not to be too noisy up there please.”

STANNINGTON Brass Band and Stannington Training Band are hoping to save their rehearsal room with the support of the community. Locally based in Knowle Top Church Hall, Stannington, for 10 years, the bands are threatened with losing their rehearsal space when the church and hall are put up for sale. Recently, a decision was reluctantly taken to cease worship in the iconic Methodist chapel due to a dwindling congregation and

this will result in the building and adjoining hall being put up for sale. The building has been a striking landmark in Stannington since 1871 and is well-loved by the community for school nativities, band concerts, choir rehearsals and many more activities. The hall is regularly in use not only by the bands, but also a breakfast/after school club, hand bell ringers and has been in demand for keep fit, coffee mornings and party bookings.

A spokesperson for the band said: “It would be a tragic loss to the band, other user groups and to the community as a whole if these buildings are lost to commercial enterprises such as flats. “We have always been made welcome in our base in the heart of the village and would love to remain here but we can’t do this without the backing of others. “We are appealing for help to keep this facility in the hands of the community and are asking

people to contact us so we can gauge the strength of support. “We need people with previous experience of similar projects or fund-raising to come on board to steer and support us through this challenge. However, any help would be appreciated to make sure we secure these buildings. So we can assess the strength of potential support, please complete our survey at https:/www. su r ve y m on ke y. c o. u k / r / P YFRQLR or email secretary@stanningtonbrassband.org.uk”

Investigation of Roman activity and Iron-Age habitation in the area

FREE ONLINE SUPERJAM

A LOCAL community archaeology group has obtained funding for a survey of a site which could be associated with Iron-age habitation and possible later Romano-British activity. The Yorkshire Archaeological and Historical Society has funded a geophysical survey in Roughbirchworth of a feature described on old maps as ‘Iron-age camp’. A number of finds have been made including Roman coins and brooches, and an object, classified as a late Iron-age or early Roman tankard handle (photo) has been found recently. A spokesperson for the group, Barry Tylee, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to discover whether there was more Roman and Iron-age activity in our area than previously thought. “The survey should enable a decision to be made as to whether to proceed to excavate the feature. We are keen to show people what we have found so far. The site is at Cross Lane, Roughbirchworth, near Heath Hall, and we will be there on Saturday October 24 from 10am until 3pm. More information can be obtained by contacting Barry on 07707762995.

WITH many events being cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic, community consultant Kathy Marwick has started doing free online events which are free for everyone to watch. The next one will be a ‘Great Get Together Superjam’ at 2pm on Sunday October 18, with the amazing local duo Stevie Moore and Patricia Lynn.

Please note the activity takes place outside and social distancing and appropriate Covid precautions will be in place.

Their names are what you will need to search for on Facebook to join. For further information or to plan an event, contact Kathy Markwick on 0772 952 8844 or kathymarkwick@ gmail.com

Sandersons team bring added bounce to Night Strider DEBORAH Holmes brought style and a sense of community to the north of Sheffield when she launched department store Sandersons at Fox Valley in Stocksbridge. And friends and colleagues will be keeping that unique spirit alive when they join the Virtual Night Strider and support St Luke’s Hospice. Night Strider is the popular St Luke’s October charity spectacular that sees supporters heading off into the night on either a 10k or walking half marathon challenge. 2020 would have marked Night Strider’s

sixth anniversary but when the COVID-19 pandemic took hold, a new plan had to be developed - and Night Strider has gone virtual! The Night Strider virtual challenge - sponsored by Pricecheck and Gripple - has participants registering free of charge to do their own fundraising event any time between between now and Saturday October 31. Deborah Holmes was a patient at St Luke’s and it was in her memory that a team from Sandersons took part in last year’s Night Strider. They’re back now for Virtual Night Strider,

keeping Deborah’s memory alive and at the same time raising money to ensure that other people can experience the same levels of support that Deborah and her family received. And they’ll be doing that by holding their own Boogie Bounce, a 40 minute fun fitness class on trampettes. A team of 13 will be taking part at Deepcar Village Hall on October 29, all wearing neon clothing as they take to their socially distanced mini trampolines. “Deborah was a massive influence on us all both as a boss and

as a friend,” said store manager Lisa Fox. “Wherever she went, she always made people feel good about themselves and gave them the confidence to be what they wanted to be.” Having seen the excellent levels of care given to Deborah when she needed support the most, the Sanderson’s team have made St Luke’s a charity that is very much at the heart of everything they do. “We had the most amazing fun night as a group at Night Strider last year,” Lisa said. “Everybody taking part was so friendly and we were all there for the

same reason – we had all lost somebody or knew somebody who needed St Luke’s support and it was so uplifting right from the start. “That’s why we knew we had to sign up for the virtual event because we really want to be part of this great occasion. “We’ll be working together for a cause that means so much to us all – and we know Deborah would have liked that.” To find out more about Virtual Night Strider and how to get involved simply visit www.stlukeshospice. org.uk

These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Mayor responds to PM’s announcement on new COVID alert levels

Pop-up Post Offices

I was surprised, and somewhat disappointed, about our MP Miriam Cates’ comments on her Facebook Responding to the Prime Minister’s announcement page, about the commencement of pop-up Post of new local alert levels for coronavirus restrictions, Offices in Dodworth, Thurgoland and Grenoside. Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, Dan Jarvis “Whilst I am pleased that the Post Office recognises said: the importance of providing their services in these “We are entering a new phase in our efforts to communities, I am disappointed at the level of overcome the coronavirus and we face a difficult service being offered. I wonder if she is aware that this is an initiative being provided by the Sub-Postmaster at the Birdwell Office, and is a trial to determine usage before either not pursuing or extending the service, and is not a Post Office initiative.

to grasp the scale of action required. Local leaders face a situation where we are left without the tools and resources to control the virus, until cases spiral to the ‘very high’ alert level. This is not the right approach.

Sheffield confirmed in ‘High’ category NEW restrictions for Sheffield have been announced by the Government in a move to further prevent the spread of the virus across the city. The new measures will mean a ban on different households mixing and are expected to be introduced in Sheffield from Wednesday October 14. However, Sheffield City Council advises that everyone in the city should follow the new restrictions immediately. The new, three-tier scheme has been introduced for the whole of England and Sheffield has been placed in the ‘high’ category. Sheffield has seen a sustained rise in cases over the last few weeks and now has a case rate of around 400 per 100,000; this is too high and is the reason that Sheffield has been placed in the ‘high’ category. In category ‘High’, the restrictions mean: • You must not meet socially with friends and family indoors in any indoor setting unless you live with them or have formed a support bubble with them. This includes private homes, and any other indoor venues such as pubs and restaurants. • You also cannot meet indoors with people outside of Sheffield, unless exceptions* apply. • The ban on more than one household mixing indoors also extends to hospitality, leisure and retail settings – so, people will not

be able to socialise beyond their existing household such as visiting the pub, restaurant, leisure or entertainment venue. • Businesses selling food or drink on their premises are required to close between 10pm and 5am. • Businesses and venues selling food for consumption off the premises, can continue to do so after 10pm as long as this is through a delivery service, click-and-collect or drive-through. Orders must be made via phone, online or by post. • Existing arrangements for contact between parents and children where the children do not live in the same household as their parents, or one of their parents will remain in place. • Friends and family can also still provide informal childcare for children under 14. This must be part of a regular childcare arrangement; and does not permit playdates, birthday parties etc. • To help contain the virus, all workers who can work effectively from home should do so over the winter. Where an employer, in consultation with their employee, judges an employee can carry out their normal duties from home they should do so. In addition to these restrictions, we also advise people in Sheffield: • Not to visit friends or family in care homes, other than

in exceptional circumstances. Care homes should restrict visits to these circumstances. • To avoid the use of public transport when making a journey into, within or out of the areas affected. If you must do so – for work or attending school – you must wear a face covering. We ask you also to not share a car with those outside your household or support bubble. Full information on what ‘High’ category guidelines are can be found here. Director of Public of Health at Sheffield Greg Fell said: “We now know what the new measures and restrictions will be in Sheffield and we fully understand what extra measures will need to be put in place to keep our city safe. “Nobody wanted to be in this position. However, my clear advice to residents is to keep playing your part to combat this dangerous virus which is very much in circulation in our communities. I cannot express this clearly enough: if you have symptoms do not leave home unless it is to get a test; this does not mean go to the shops or the local pub, or visit family and friends you must isolate. Continue to wear your face covering and wash your hands regularly or use hand sanitiser gel. “The new restrictions introduced to the city will mean further restrictions on mixing households.

We understand that no-one wants to see further restrictions placed on the way we live our lives however, but in order to prioritise the safety of you and your loved ones, we must follow the new restrictions. “This does mean we now need to undertake more stringent measures to protect the public. How long these new measures last and how much further they may need go in the coming weeks and months will depend on everyone playing their part. “Only by all of us continuing to follow the guidance, will we be able to contain local transmission.” Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “Following the recent announcements from Government regarding the latest measures for Sheffield, I want to remind everyone across the city to stay safe over this uncertain period and thank people for adhering to the rules so far. “This continues to be a very difficult time for us all and given the current rate of infections, unfortunately we don’t know how long this will continue. However, there is one very clear purpose to this, and that is to protect our loved ones, our friends and the most vulnerable from coronavirus. “I want to say a big thank you to everyone for being so patient, following the guidelines and doing their very best to look after one another; you are making a big difference.

“I know these new measures means that we can no longer see our loved ones the way we have been doing over the summer months, but in order to get the city back to where it once was, it is crucial that we follow the latest guidelines. “There are still things you can do get outside, enjoy Sheffield’s many parks and green spaces, keep in contact with your friends and family, visit your local cafes and restaurants, get takeaways from your favourite locals and continue to keep your spirits high, as difficult as that may seem at times. “Please download the Track and Trace app if you haven’t already, this will automatically tell you if you need to self-isolate, which in turn, will help us get back to some form of normality. “If you are a business affected by these new measures, you can find out more about how to operate safely in line with the new guidance on the Sheffield City Council website. “Our Business Sheffield Advisors are also on hand to offer advice to businesses. Contact them by calling 0114 224 5000 or via email at businesssheffield@sheffield.gov.uk. “Through everyone’s combined efforts, we will be able to look back and remember how, collectively, we got through this.”

Second and third place in the Club Championship went to the Finney brothers, Andrew and Peter. Both have had a superbly consistent season, Andrew in particular by getting his handicap down very close to two. The Dragons Section began their Winter Cup competition on October 7, with Martin Bradwell (18) being the overall winner for the first round with 34 points. Pete Hodkin (17) was second with the same score but Mar-

tin pipped him with a better back nine. Ray Harvey (26) was third with 33 points. Playing conditions were tough enough for not a single two to be carded across the whole playing field. Sixty-five playing members took on the fierce westerly winds on Saturday October 10 to compete in the last summer competition of the season. Callum Brown (20) scored a highly creditable net 61 in the stroke play format to win the competition. Lee Bowling (19) came second one stroke back with a net 62, cursing a six on the last hole that probably cost him the victory. Andrew Finney (three) and Peter Finney (five) both came in with net 63s, but Andrew took third place with a one under par gross back nine. Andrew’s full card included three birdies, 13 pars and just two dropped shots. His consistency all season has been outstanding. Ann Whitfield (24) won the Ladies Stableford final played on Sunday October 11. Ann won with an excellent 38 points, three points clear of Bev Sykes (27) on 35 points. Liana O’Sullivan (six) was third with 34 points. On the same day Jonathon Bradley (18) won the Pro’s Prize Stableford competition with 40 points. Ash Howe (8) and Neil Elliott (12) both scored 37 points, but Ash had the better back nine.

BUSY WEEKEND FOR WHEELERS LAST weekend was a busy one for members of Birdwell Wheelers. SATURDAY saw Trevor Mayne and David Jarvis ride in the Holme Valley Wheelers Hill Climb, a distance of 1.3 miles at a gradient averaging 9.5% up to the top of Holme Moss. Mayne finished in 11m 01s placing him 26th out of the 60 finishers and 4th in the veteran (over 40) age group. Jarvis was 38th in 12m 31.5s and 9th veteran. The next day saw 3 Wheelers in action. Dan Emery rode in the British Masters Cycle Racing (BMCR) Hill Climb Championship for those 40

years and over. The event was on Carr Lane a climb of just short of 1 mile. Emery finished in 4m 03s placing him 24th of 61 finishers and 12th in his age category. Also climbing on Sunday was Chris Jenkins who rode in the Tickhill Velo event on Bib Lane, a short but steep climb of 600 yards. He finished in 1m 48.3s placing 39th of 45 finishers. Further afield on the flat, Wheeler Paul Heggie rode in the Seaforth Wheelers 10 Mile Time Trial at Bubwith. A strong wind meant fast times were at a premium and Heggie finished in 26m 27s

placing him 58th of 79 finishers and 41st in the veterans (over 40) category. His time beat his own club age record at 67 years old set earlier this year by the slimmest of margins, one second! Due to the restrictions on maximum gatherings of six people the club have currently suspended their Sunday club rides. These will resume when government guidelines allow. HOWARTH HITS THE ROAD SHEFFIELD racer Kyle Howarth will be back on two wheels in December – for a great cause.

Howarth will hit the road on his bicycle to raise funds for the Speedway Riders’ Benevolent Fund which has missed out on a season of track bucket collections this year. They normally pull in thousands of pounds to help injured and disabled riders. He will start at Swindon’s Abbey Stadium on December 5 and make the 156 mile journey to Manchester and Belle Vue’s National Speedway Stadium – his hometown club. Howarth moved into the Premiership with Sheffield in the winter to play his part in an exciting new era for the club – until the pandemic wiped out an entire league season. He said: “I’ve always enjoyed road cycling and I’ve always wanted to do something like this. “So I thought I may as well add some meaning to it and give something

back to the Ben Fund because what they do is so important. “It’s not just the current injured riders they help, they help those who got injured riding Speedway and who are still affected by their injuries today. “The Ben Fund hasn’t been able to have the collections at each track this year and so I wanted to help do my bit to get them a bit more money in. “I decided to make it Speedway related by starting to the track nearest where I live in Marlborough, Wiltshire to my childhood hometown in Manchester. “156 miles sounds like a lot but I’m building my training up and it really is going to keep me fit and prepared for when 2021 comes around.” To donate, head to: https://www.gofundme. com/f/speedway-benfund or search @SpeedwaySRBF on Twitter.

CHURCH PROGRESS IN FA VASE A FANTASTIC crowd of 280 watched as Penistone Church progressed through their second qualifying round of their Buildbase FA Vase campaign with a 2-1 win over Wythenshawe Amateurs. The Nick Firth Tiles Man of the Match, Danny Howes, got Church off to the perfect start when he put them ahead inside three minutes. And it got better for the home side just before the break when Charlie Baird doubled the advantage on 43 minutes. Wythenshawe pulled one back late on with Shane Islam Deans Mussa notching in the 89th minute but Church held on to progress. Church manager Ian Richards said: “I thought today was a really good performance, we were comprehensive in the first half, we were dominant in the second half but the last five minutes of the game took a bit of the shine off, it made it feel false in terms of the outcome. “Obviously in a cup game, going in 2-0 up at half time and fully deserving it, and it could have been more. “Our front three caused them all sorts of problems, our midfield won all the seconds, got on top of the ball, played really good qual-

ity football and were rewarded with Danny Howes’ goal. “Our full backs caused threats, especially Tom Charlesworth on the right hand side was first class today, going forward and defensively. That allowed Brett Lovell and Ryan Johnson to take care of the high balls and any threat they had. “I was pleased with the first half, we talked about getting that third goal and killing it off so we could enjoy it. In a cup game you’ve got to chase it and one goal could swing it either way. “We had chances in the second half, without playing as well, to go and get that third goal but we didn’t take them. They played a bit of a higher line second half and we didn’t adapt quick enough, we got caught offside too many times we still had numerous goal scoring opportunities or situations what we were in, I was pleased with that.” “I would have been really disappointed for the players if that had been drawn and gone to penalties because I thought we were very good today, I wasn’t pleased with a lot of individual performances but more importantly I was pleased with the collective performance. “We fully deserved the win and progress to the next round and we look forward to hopefully getting a home tie.”

TEN-MAN STEELS CONCEDE FIVE

STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels made the trip to Lincolnshire on the back of a two-game winning run on the road but were no match for a very strong Stamford side, losing 5-0. Steels rarely put anything together to threaten the home side, with ill discipline also costing the visitors dear with five bookings and red card for Joe Lumsden, who was adjudged to have stamped on an opposition player. Stamford are in fine form at the moment and this was the third consecutive home game in which they have scored five goals. Tom Siddons scored a brace with Cosmos Matwasa, Harry Limb and James Hicks also on target in a dominant display. Stamford have now scored 17 goals in their opening four Northern Premier League, racking up 10 points. Park Steels host Marske FC in the FA Trophy on Saturday, with a 3pm kick off.
