Chapeltown pupils stride out for St Luke’s

PUPILS at a North Sheffield Primary are taking part in their annual charity fundraising despite the current situation meaning they can’t take part in the ‘usual way’.

Every year Windmill Hill Primary in Chapeltown organise and take part in fundraising activities for St Luke’s Hospice as part of a programme encouraging enterprise and philanthropy from their pupils.

This year, with many of the usual fundraising activities such as bun sales out of the question, they’ve come up with another plan! Pupils are taking part in the charity’s Night Strider event, albeit striding out in the day, in their covid secure bubbles and as part of their PE lessons.

Teacher Miss Crossland, who leads the charity fundraising for school each year, said: “As with everything in these difficult times we’ve had to think outside the box for our fundraising this year!

“We’ve come up with getting the children to take part in Night Strider during the day. They’re all wearing bright colours rather than their usual PE kits and are really enjoying striding out. Their families can then sponsor them online.”

Windmill Hill Head Teacher Mr Plant added: “St Luke’s is a fantastic charity and this year more than ever is so important to staff and pupils as they recently looked after one of our staff members.

“We know that many charities are really struggling in these challenging times and we wanted to make sure we still demonstrated to our pupils the importance of the work that charities do and raising money for them.”
