Five new cycling routes show off the best of the Sheffield Lakeland area
FIVE new cycling routes have been created as a free download by Stocksbridge countryside management charity, the Steel Valley Project, to help people discover new places to ride in their local area. Developed in response to an increasing number of cyclists as a result of the Covid-19 restrictions, the routes are aimed at people who are new or returning to cycling, along with those just wanting to explore and find out how to link the local network of roads, tracks and rights of way.
Located around the urban edges of the Sheffield Lakeland area, the series of 5 cycle routes vary in length from five to 14 miles and are relatively easy going with a mix of road and off-road sections.
Although there are some tough hills which may need pushing up, the aim is that they can be ridden on gravel, hybrid or mountain bikes. The project has been supported by National Lottery players through the Heritage Fund and the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership. Trek Sheffield Fox Valley have added their support and, to celebrate the launch of the cycle routes, are also giving a free T-shirt to people riding all five (terms and conditions apply). Speaking about the project, they commented: “Trek Sheffield Fox Valley are super excited about the launch of the Sheffield Lakeland Cycling Routes. 2020 has been a remarkable year for many reasons and cycling is one of the

Tom Newman, Steel Valley Project General Manager, said: “The Covid-19 restrictions have brought huge changes and we’re really excited to be able to share these routes which will hopefully give people confidence to get out and explore the local area on their bikes.
“We’ve had a long standing relationship with Trek Sheffield, who support the Steel Valley Ride every year, so it’s great that they wanted to get involved in this project by donating free T-shirts to people riding all the routes. HILLSBOROUGH COUNCILLOR ELECTED AS NEW SHEFFIELD LABOUR GROUP LEADER Bob Johnson has been elected as the Leader of Sheffield City Council Labour Group at a meeting of the group this week. Two weeks ago, Julie Dore announced that she would be standing down as Leader ahead of her retirement as a councillor in May, after leading the Labour Group since 2010 and being Leader of Sheffield City Council since 2011. Councillor Johnson has served as a Councillor for the Hillsborough ward, where he lives, since 2011, and as Cabinet Member for Transport and Development since May 2019. In this time he has worked on the development of a new local plan which proposes the regeneration of Sheffield city centre and to protect the city’s green belt from development. Councillor Johnson will replace Councillor Dore as Leader of Sheffield City Council at the next Full Council meeting which will
be held on Wednesday January 6. Councillor Bob Johnson, said: “It is an unbelievable honour to be elected as Leader of the Labour Group and I would like to thank my colleagues for putting their trust in me. I am Sheffield born and bred and am passionate about our city delivering on the huge potential we have. “I would like to pay tribute to Julie who has led the city through one of the most challenging times in our history, dealing with a decade of austerity and the pandemic over the past year. She should be provide of everything she has achieved as she retires from office in May. “Now is a crucial time and as a city we face enormous challenges with the ongoing pandemic, as we continue to fight this virus and the long term economic and social impact. “I am determined that we continue to take decisive action to protect our city through the next stages of this pandemic. Wheth-
er this be action to work with local businesses and trade unions to protect jobs and livelihoods, whether it be with our schools and young people about the impact that the crisis will have on their futures, whether it be continuing to support our communities in times of hardship and valuing and recognising our carers for everything they have done. “We will only address these challenges by coming together and that is what I want to do. I know there is so much collective passion for Sheffield and will for us to succeed and I want to utilise all of this for the benefit of our city. “This will be a time of change for the council not only in the political leadership but the new year will see the start of a new Chief Executive which is a real opportunity for a fresh approach and new ways of doing things, thinking outside the box. I look forward to working with everyone to tackle these challenges together for Sheffield.”

Paces invests in new base to support more adults living with motor disorders and brain injuries
PACES, the High Green specialist centre, charity and school for individuals with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders, is to expand its services for adults with the opening of a new facility. Located at the Smithywood Business Park – just two miles from Paces current headquarters and directly off the M1 at junction 35 - the 8,000 square foot base will allow Paces Living Adult Services to grow and support three-times as many adults in the future. It will mean more places for more individuals, who will be able to easily access the facility from across South Yorkshire and beyond, as well as providing an improved space to
offer conductive education sessions that improve the mobility of those who have acquired brain injuries – such as through a stroke, Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s.
allow us to help more individuals with the care we are renowned for, enabling them to be independent, build relationships and achieve their potential.
In time, Paces will also develop a service for young adults aged between 18 to 25 to ensure the organisation is able to offer the best possible care for those who need it, no matter what their age.
“We know there is too little provision for adults with motor disorders and brain injuries across Yorkshire – whether that’s recovering from a Stroke, living with Cerebral Palsy or facing a diagnosis of Parkinson’s.
Dr Spencer Pitfield, Chief Executive of Paces, said: “This is an exciting moment for Paces and a step forward for our vision of never having to turn people away from accessing the support we offer.
“Our unique offer, teaching lifechanging skills through conductive education, in an environment that is fun, where friendships are developed, and everyone feels like they belong, is one I am excited will be available to more people in the months and years ahead.”
“Moving our adult services to a modern facility at Smithywood will
Christian Centre Christmas events STOCKSBRIDGE Christian Centre is to host a number of events over Christmas. On December 13, the centre on Cedar Road will be host to an on-site service led by community worker Phil Hall at 10.30am. On December 20, at 10.30am, there will be an on-site adult Nativity led by the worship team. Both of these will also be available via Zoom. Contact James H. Grayson at j.h.grayson@sheffield.ac.uk for the links. On Christmas Day, the centre will host live carols in the car park and a brief communion from 10am. On December 27, there will be an on-site quiet time of reflection on the past year and looking to the New Year at 10am and January 3 sees the covenant service - a time of re-commitment for the New Year, also on-site. Anyone wishing to attend is asked to notify Revd. Grayson
The Smithywood site will also be the new home for the charity’s staff while Paces School remains on the existing base at High Green. A refit will begin in the New Year with the hope of moving in during April 2021.
got behind our campaign for a new home for Paces and I hope they can see that, after a difficult year for us all, we have been working extremely hard to turn their generosity into real improvements to the support we can offer.
Paces has been campaigning for a new home for some time to allow for the expansion of its services and the numbers it can support. Moving adult services to Smithywood will mean plans can be taken forward for a new home for Paces School and further updates on that are expected in the New Year.
“I would like to thank everyone who has supported us in 2020 and look forward to continuing that fundraising drive in 2021 so we can achieve our vision of a new home for Paces School, allowing us to support more children just as Smithywood will allow us to support more adults.”
Julie Booth, Head of Fundraising at Paces, said: “So many individuals, businesses and organisations have

Garden Nature Notes Something different for 2020 in Thorpe Hesley from the Upper Don Tree Charter Branch THE Tree Charter was launched at Lincoln Castle on November 6 2017, the 800th Anniversary of the 1217 Charter of the Forest. The new Charter for trees, woods and people set out the principles for a society in which people and trees can stand strong together. However, planting trees in open spaces is not the only way we can help wildlife to flourish. We as individuals can’t stop forests burning in the Amazon. But all of us who have gardens, even a tiny garden or patio, can help wildlife to flourish in our community with a little thought and understanding as to what wildlife requires. In our area, as in most parts of the country, we have seen the number of wildlife species – most obviously songbirds – decline drastically in recent years. Garden and woodland birds which were not so long ago, very common such as thrushes, chaffinches, yellowhammers and greenfinches are rarely seen today. Birds of prey, which have increased in recent years, need a plentiful supply of small birds and mammals for survival. These creatures in turn need shelter for their survival. According to the Wildlife Trust the best form of shelter is a hedge which can form a garden boundary instead of a fence or wall, especially if native trees and shrubs are used. Hedges allow wildlife to move between gardens and other spaces, and provide feeding and breeding opportunities. They also look beautiful. Hedges offer food in the form of leaves, nectar-rich flowers, berries, fruits, seeds and nuts, and are also good hunting grounds for predators seeking insects and other invertebrates. They make natural windbreaks, creating sheltered areas in the garden, which is particularly important for butterflies. They also create areas of shade, increasing the range of habitats within the garden for wildlife and people! Informal hedges and trees are better than those that are regularly clipped; for instance, hawthorn, holly and privet will produce few or no flowers and berries if kept trim. Planting hedges instead of using fences and walls allows wildlife to travel, including hedgehogs and find food and shelter more easily. Choosing your plants: Native shrubs and trees like hawthorn, field maple, blackthorn, beech, hornbeam and holly make an ideal mixture of hedging plants. Grow rambling plants, such as wild rose, bramble and honeysuckle, through your hedge to provide even more shelter and food for wildlife. Honeysuckle smell gorgeous. and the wild roses are a lovely addition to the flora of the garden Ivy is particularly beneficial for nesting birds and it flowers in the autumn when few other nectar sources are available to
insects. Encourage prospective wildlife by growing it up into large trees. Rambling roses can also be planted up trees creating a rich source of nectar for wildlife and a lovey sight for human eyes! Planting your hedges: The best time for planting is between November and March, but never plant into waterlogged or frozen ground. Bare, rooted plants are cheaper, but take care not to expose the roots for long when planting. Until they are established, keep the base of your plants free from weeds with a thick mulch or matting. If you can’t plant them where they are going to be permanently straight away heel them in somewhere temporary; even a bucket of soil/compost can serve as a temporary home if necessary as long as the roots are buried. For a mixed native hedge, try to include three plants of the same species per 1 m (3 ¼ ft) with one each of two other species. Maintaining your hedges: Hedges should not be pruned until late winter or early spring so that wildlife can take advantage of the insects and fruits provided during the winter months. In the first spring, cut shrubs back to 4560 cm (18-25 in) above the ground. This encourages bushy growth.
AFTER the cancellation of their usual Christmas market and tree festival, the Events Committee of Holy Trinity Thorpe Hesley they have come up with some Covid-19 safe ideas for this Christmas which everyone can take part in safely. Up to December 15, there is a Natvity Journey – a family walk around the village looking at the decorated houses
and gardens to follow the nativity story ending with a beautiful outdoor nativity scene and large Christmas tree outside the church. A map can be downloaded from www.thorpeandscholes.org. Further information is available from Kay on 07708421017 or kayhester@ hotmail.co.uk Also, the 12 Days of Christmas Challenge takes place
from December 1 to 12 – they are supporting Rotherham foodbank by placing items in a box every day for 12 days. A calendar with information about items needed and how to drop off your completed box is available to download on www. thorpeandscholes.org. Further information is available from Fiona on 07963955263 or fionawilsons61@hotmail. com
RECYCLE YOUR TREE - HELP A HOSPICE
Top tips • To protect birds, wildlife hedges should not be trimmed in the nesting season (March to August). Try to cut sections of hedge at different times, so there is always an undisturbed place for wildlife. • Angling your plants at around 45 degrees as you plant them will help you to establish a hedge which is not too thin at the bottom. Suggested plants: • Blackthorn - Prunus spinosa • Bramble - Rubus fruticosus • Common Beech - Fagus sylvatica • Common Hawthorn - Crataegus monogyna • Common Hornbeam - Carpinus betulus • Dog-rose - Rosa canina • Eglantine Rose (aka Sweet Briar) - Rosa rubiginosa • Field Maple - Acer campestre • Holly - Ilex aquifolium • Honeysuckle - Lonicera periclymenum • Ivy - Hedera helix • Traveller’s-joy (aka Old Man’s Beard) Clematis vitalba • Wayfaring tree - Viburnum lantana Happy planting!
SO many of us are looking forward to having a real Christmas tree at the centre of our festive displays after a year like no other – but are altogether less enthusiastic about the New Year clean-up. Thankfully, a local charity has stepped in to take away all the hassle. Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice will be easing people’s post-festive woes with an exciting new Christmas tree recycling service across Sheffield in partnership with several community-spirited local businesses. For a small donation, the charity and its team of eager elves will collect real Christmas trees from outside people’s homes and then recycle them in an ethical and environmentally friendly way. Each tree recycled will help Bluebell Wood be there for children and families across Sheffield who simply don’t know how long they have together. Long-standing Bluebell Wood supporter XPO Logistics, which has sites in Barnsley, Chapeltown and Doncaster, is delighted to
lend its support and expertise to the charity’s new service. Gavin Williams, managing director, supply chain – UK and Ireland, XPO Logistics, said: “As a business we’re always looking for ways to give back, and our Christmas tree collection is a practical way to help the community while supporting a life-changing local charity. “In addition to raising funds for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and aiding the recycling effort, we’ll be removing any stray trimmings so that everything runs as smoothly as possible.” Booking a collection couldn’t be easier – all people need to do is visit https://www.bluebellwood.org/recycle-your-christmas-tree and follow the button for their area, or call 01909 508103. All the real Christmas trees that are collected will then be chipped and turned into compost, with some used to grow new trees and others used in the gardens at Bluebell Wood.

Your Letters
Hello. I hope you are well. What a year it has been! I do not think there are many people who have managed to get to the end of 2020 without feeling stressed or anxious at least once. However, we are at the end of it and we have made it together. Sadly, some people have lost loved ones, jobs, businesses and money along the way. Hopefully, the end is in sight to the pandemic and next year will bring some relief from the difficulties we have all been facing. If there are any positives to take from the year, it can be that this is the year communities came together once again to help one another. Whether that has been through helping to deliver food parcels, clapping in unison on our doorsteps or being courteous of our fellow human beings - there has been a lot of compassion shown and that is something we should remember as a nation and keep the traits of as we moved forward. As Christmas approaches, I hope you are looking forward to spending some much needed time with friends and family, albeit in smaller numbers. If you are alone, I hope you have people you can reach out too.

Christmas greetings

Dear Sir, Many thanks, On behalf of everyone at the EPPiC Theatre, Cllr Andy Bainbridge (labour councillor for East Ecclesfield, we wish all your readers a very Happy Ecclesfield) Christmas and all best wishes for 2021, when we Cllr Adam Hurst (Labour councillor for West are hoping to stage a production later in the year, Ecclesfield) virus free! We look forward to seeing friends old Cllr Bob Johnson (labour councillor for and new. Hillsborough) Cllr Julie Grocutt (labour councillor for With kind regards, Stocksbridge and Upper Don) Val Baggett.
To keep your stress levels low over the festive season, remember to not put yourself under too much financial strain. The cost of gifts is going up and up and the wants and needs of young ones are ever increasing.
With that said, enjoy every single moment where you can, whether that is sharing a mince pie with your friends, swapping presents with family or chilling on your own watching your favourite Christmas movies.
This can add pressure to buy the latest and greatest things. However, try not to burden yourself financially and head into the New Year worried about debt. Enjoy yourself and spoil people where you can, but not so that it creates you anxiety moving forward. Try setting a budget for each person you want to buy for and stick within your limits. It is also worth noting, not to overindulge in social media during the festive season. Some people can be prone to looking at other people’s picture-perfect Christmas’s - whether that’s amazing trees, toys or things people are doing – and feel envious, upset or like they are missing out.
Heading into the New Year it is always good to set goals. These can help to refocus your wants and needs, especially after a year like the last one. One thing to remember about this year is that it is okay to have just survived the year and not conquered any mountains. The year has been a mountain in itself.
All of these are normal feelings to have, but if you find yourself experiencing any of them when looking at social media then make sure to turn it off for a while. We are not all the same and there will always be someone with more than us and someone with less. It is important to enjoy what you have and do not become disheartened at what you perceive yourself to not have.

However, a new year brings new horizons, whether that is deciding to get out and walk once a week, picking up a hobby, starting a business, planning a break or something else. You could try writing down your goals or creating a visual dream board with the photos of what you want to achieve. Whatever you want from next year, I hope you get it. In the meantime, have a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year. Please note: This article is for educational purposes only and should not replace proper medical advice. Charlie skates to success
BARNSLEY College Travel and Tourism student Charlie Stringer is setting her sights on competing in the World Junior Synchronised Skating Championships in the near future.
The 16-year-old started skating at the age of seven, on the basic UK level scheme progressing through the 16 levels, which resulted in her joining the Sheffield Synchronised Ice-Skating club at the age of 10. This led to Charlie competing in competitions all around the world, against national and international teams, where she has regularly achieved podium finishes. Most recently she was
LEAGUE POSTPONED STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels have announced that all first team games are to be called off until December 19. Following on from the announcement last week about the Trident Leagues and its clubs voting to continue the season pause, the Northern Premier League confirmed that all league games on December 5 and 12 had been postponed, and this has now been extended until at least December 19.
selected to join the Team GB development squad, with her synchro team at her home rink, Ice Sheffield.
On top of all this, Charlie competes in several solo competitions, gaining a lot of podium finishes up and down the country, and is committed to coaching the next generation to help younger skaters develop their skills and confidence. Charlie is part of the Barnsley Sports Academy within College and has been able to access an Elite Sports Performance Bursary to fund aspects of her competition such as equipment and travel. Charlie said: “I got into synchronised ice skating by
watching it at Ice Sheffield’s Christmas show when I was 10 and being amazed by how it includes all of the disciplines of skating into one with the speed, elegance and lifts. From then I started to train with the Sheffield Synchronised Ice-Skating Club and moved from being elementary to now competing at junior. “My greatest sporting achievement would be managing to qualify for the Team GB development squad. The Elite Sports Performance Bursary will ensure that I am able to access more of the things I need in order to go further with my skating.”
Stocksbridge Rugby eye up Christmas fixture
However, if in the interim the Government make any changes to the current tier restrictions that allow the return of fans to all NPL fixtures, the league will approve the reinstatement of any scheduled matches where both clubs are in agreement.
Tigers eye Holder return JACK Holder remains in Sheffield Speedway plans for next season after his Swedish club announced he won’t be returning. Aussie ace Holder has already signed a deal with Polish top flight side Torun which means, under controversial new rules imposed by Poland officials, he is only allowed to race in one other league.
“When we signed him I was excited about it, so like so many other things it was a huge disappointment when we didn’t get to see him race for us. “We have to be positive about 2021 and whatever the team looks like when we get to the tapes we will be competitive and do our very best.
Now Tigers are expected to hold more talks with Holder, who enjoyed a fine season in Poland and was handed the wildcard spot for the final two Grand Prix rounds of the year.
“Obviously there are aspects of the sport which mean things are a little uncertain with some riders but we are confident things will fall into place. I hope we can arrange for Jack to return and show us all what we missed this year.”
He was also in Australia’s plans for the Speedway of Nations but opted to head home to be reunited with his partner.
Promoters throughout the country are continuing discussions on the immediate and long term future of the sport.
Boss Simon Stead has backed Holder for a bright future in the sport and had been relishing the prospect of working with him this year.
The issue of Polish restrictions appears to have forced their hand into looking at changes in the two professional leagues with more discussions planned.
“Jack is a class act,” he said. “He’s got potential and if he applies himself properly and maintains a professional approach to his career he will go far.
One aspect of 2021 confirmed is the planned start date of Easter weekend in April with fans returning to venues and the prospect of a vaccination programme starting soon.
WITH the easing of the recent lockdown, the new tier system will allow Stocksbridge Rugby to play friendly fixtures, albeit under some Covid adapted rules. The Coal Pit Laners were quick to return to training, with a healthy turn out on Wednesday and the club have confirmed regular training sessions up until Christmas. The Pigs are pleased to confirm that they will play away to local rivals Wortley RUFC on December 19 with a 2pm kick off. “It’s great to see the lads running around with a smile on their faces again, we even had some spectators
at a training run,” said director of rugby, Andy Tyers.
way to get the boys back out on the park.”
“We were hopeful there were other local sides with the same mentality as we have, looking to get a run out to blow the cobwebs away.”
Under the updated restrictions there will be no mixing or socialising permitted afterwards.
And those hopes have proved to be true, with both sides relishing the pre-Christmas clash. However, the game may look a little different given new rulings around the maul, lineout, scrum and other restarts. “If we want to play, we will need to play under these new rulings,” Tyers said. “It will be new and the same for all concerned, but at least it is a
However, this is a small price to pay for the opportunity to lace up the boots again. Flying winger, Callum Green has resumed training and earned the ‘top trainer’ award in last Wednesdays session. He is now looking forward to resuming rugby with his team mates. “I’ve missed them,’ said Green. “Even Keeno! I’m enjoying the training and being around the boys again, it will be great to get a run out before Christmas.”

CHURCH BOSS GLAD TO BE BACK IN ACTION PENISTONE Church face Longridge Town in the second round of the Buildbase FA Vase on Saturday and manager Ian Richards is looking forward to the game.
as many games this year so it’s hard to get a true indication of their form and how they’ve started, we have had reports and footage of them we do know that they’re a very good footballing side.
The game will kick off at 3pm, with Penistone Church the away side for the game which will take place behind closed doors.
“They’re a team that like to pass the ball, a team that like to play out from the back, a team that have a clear system and style of play. They’re a team that will hurt us and cause a lot of problems and be dangerous if we don’t stick to our game plan, play to our strengths and make sure that we have a fast start after a month layoff.
Richards says: “We return back to competitive football on Saturday in a brilliant game away in the FA Vase second round, the furthest we have been in this cup competition away at Longridge Town. “They’re a North West Counties Premier Division side, a team that did well in this competition previously, they’re a team which had a good season last year. Obviously they’ve not played
“The players have come back fit and strong. We assessed their fitness in training and there were some high levels of fitness so we’ve got no issues there. They looked sharp in training, they played at a high intensity we did a good hour and a half, we didn’t overload
the players just enough to get them back involved and get ready for Saturday. “We’ve talked about how we’re going to set up, how we’re going to play in the different areas of the pitch so it’s just going to Longridge and doing that. Obviously it’s behind closed doors which is a shame for our community but we want to progress so hopefully if we can win this one and in a week’s time we’ll have another FA Vase game which will keep competitive football with league games not starting until January. “We just have to control what we can control and that’s winning in the FA Vase. It’s not our fault that this the situation we’re in but it’s our responsibility that we respond well to it, do well on Saturday and see how far we can get in this cup competition.
