£25M bid for Stocksbridge town regeneration A £25m investment plan has been put forward by Sheffield City Council and The Stocksbridge Towns Fund Board for the regeneration of Stocksbridge town in a bid to benefit from the government’s £3.6bn Towns Fund. Stocksbridge was one of 100 places in England invited to develop proposals for a Town Deal as part of the Towns Fund, launched in July 2019. The Towns Fund agenda will inject much needed cash into the regeneration of towns through investment in infrastructure, connectivity, skills and enterprise, cultural and economic assets to drive long term productivity and growth. A Towns Deal Board has been set up comprising of private, community and public sector representatives including members of Sheffield City Council and local Councillor Julie Grocutt, to develop a locally owned

Town Investment Plan which if approved by Government would secure funding to improve travel and transport infrastructure, provide street scene and green space enhancements, create further higher education and skill development opportunities, as well as improved sport, arts and cultural facilities. At the heart of the plan is a flagship development on Manchester Road that incorporates a new 21st century library alongside a range of other community and leisure services. Built on the current council owned library site, it is hoped that the new building, alongside improvements to the public realm and improved links to Fox Valley will act as the catalyst for regeneration of Manchester Road which has seen a decline in recent years. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet member for Culture, Parks and Leisure said: “This is a truly exciting opportunity for

the people of Stocksbridge. It is a once in a generation chance to make Stocksbridge a strong, vibrant, attractive town centre that serves its community and is fit for future generations. “This year has had a big impact on our communities but these proposals will help to secure Stocksbridge’s recovery following the pandemic, develop a strengthened and diversified economy and provide a more stable, brighter future for the town and its residents.” The Town Investment Plan has been developed, following extensive consultation with local residents about what they would like to see improved in Stocksbridge. These views have been developed into proposals which will form the basis of the plan. More information is available via the Cabinet Report at democracy.sheffield.gov.uk

Bluebell Wood’s Christmas elves sprinkle magic BLUEBELL Wood’s Christmas elves have been sprinkling festive magic across in Ecclesfield and Penistone, putting huge smiles on children’s faces. Christmas came early for the families supported by the charity as its eager elves delivered presents and bucket loads of festive cheer in a covid-safe way across the region. Bluebell Wood’s elves even had a specially recorded message from the big man himself, who was too busy loading his sleigh to make an early appearance. The charity ordinarily has a big Christmas Party, as well as a variety of magical events at the hospice where families can make precious memories in the time they have together.

or talk and needs round the clock care. The elf ’s visit provided a very welcome helping of Christmas spirit for her family. “It was so lovely and it really brightened up our December,” said Evie-Mae’s mum Keeley. “Like everyone else we’ve not been able to get out and see Santa this year so it really made our day.” Molly Williams, eight, who has a degenerative condition called SMA Type 1 which affects every aspect of her life, was over-themoon to be greeted by a Christmas elf at her door. “Molly and her brother and sister all absolutely loved it,” said Molly’s mum, May, from Penistone.

While this wasn’t possible this year, Bluebell Wood was determined to spread some festive cheer.

“They thought it was magical and it really felt quite personal too, like it was just for them.”

Evie-Mae O’Grady Askwith, nine, from Ecclesfield, has an extremely rare chromosome deletion disorder, which means she can’t walk

Susan Wood, Director of Care at Bluebell Wood, said: “Christmas is such an incredibly important time for the families in our care who sadly don’t know how

long they’ll have together, so every year we pull out all the stops to make it as magical as possible. “This year has, of course, been very different – but we were determined that it wouldn’t stop us helping our families to make special memories together. “Our elves did an amazing job and it was wonderful to see all the smiling faces. “A huge thank you to all our supporters; thanks to your generosity we really can make Christmas dreams come true.” People can help turn Blue- A Bluebell Wood elf visits Evie-Mae and Molly bell Wood dreams into reality while ticking a job off their New Year’s to do list by using the charity’s Christmas Tree recycling service. Hillsborough playground reopens with ssssspectacular new attraction ONE of Sheffield’s most popular parks, Hillsborough Park, has reopened its playground following completion of the first phase of improvements, which have brought a giant snake’s head and a brand new obstacle course to the park. The Parks and Countryside team have been working with the Friends of Hillsborough Park to deliver the £50,000 of improvements with the aim of bringing a unique and exciting attraction to the playground, as well as providing a great space for children to take part in active and imaginative play. Local people contributed to the playground design during a community event held in the Walled Garden where residents and visitors were able to give their ideas and comments on three different options. Phase one included the installation of the new snake’s head and obstacle course, as well as removal and replacement of damaged equipment. These improvements have been made possible from a range of funding including investment from Public Health funding, Section 106, Charitable investments and a donation from Tramlines.

Councillor Bob Johnson, Cabinet Member for Transport and Development and local councillor Hillsborough ward, said: “Hillsborough Park is real local gem, meeting the needs of so many people of all ages. With the first phase of playground improvements now complete, including the great new snake’s head slide, it’s brilliant that we can reopen and welcome families back on to the play equipment. “This was designed in partnership with local people, so we’re really pleased that they can now enjoy the benefits of this investment and look forward to developing phase two with the local community firmly at the heart of it. Christine Welburn from the Friends of Hillsborough Park (FoHP) said: “The FoHP are excited that the first stage of the playground renovation is complete. The new equipment lifts the whole park and the snakes head is stunning. Local families and children deserve to have such an innovative play area. We look forward to the communities’ support for fundraising towards the next phase of development. The focus will now move to the second phase of improvements,

that will see the refurbishment of the rest of the playground to include exciting play and musical equipment, a sandpit and new surfacing and markings. It is expected that a further ÂŁ100,000 of investment is needed to complete phase two. Cllr Lea added: “We have been very fortunate with phase one to be able to use some of the Public Health money committed in this final year of investment, as well as a generous donation from Tramlines and other funding projects, which we are extremely grateful for. We can’t wait to get started Bob Johnson and Mary Lea with Christine Welburn from Friends of on plans for phase two which Councillors Hillsborough Park will provide an outstanding play facility for thousands of children across the city.â€?

Headteacher Mr Gaughan met with Nick the day before to receive the books and officially welcome Erris Homes to Wharncliffe Side. “Wharncliffe Side Primary School would like to thank Erris Homes for their very generous gift of Christmas books for all our children,” he said. “We will really enjoy reading them and welcoming our new neighbours at Cloverleaf Court.” With the completion of their current Orchard Croft development in High Green expected at the end of December, Erris Homes are looking forward to bringing an exciting new community of thirteen new-build

homes to the peaceful suburb of Wharncliffe Side in 2021. Work commenced on the new development, named Cloverleaf Court, last month. This exclusive development will comprise twelve semi-detached homes and one detached

Buy Local Christmas campaign AFTER a devastating year for high street businesses, Sheffield City Council has launched Its Make Yourself at Home for Christmas campaign giving people lots of ideas on how to support Sheffield businesses this festive season. The phrase ‘use it or lose it’ has never been more important as businesses prepare for the crunch period in the run up to Christmas. The ripple effect of just one property closure can be far reaching as local businesses are not just employers, but also customers of other local businesses. Recent research shows that for every £1 spent with local businesses, around 50p remains in the local economy; spend that same £1 with online giants or major chains, and only around 5p filters back. Make Yourself at Home at Christmas seeks to share all the fantastic local produce, bespoke items and experiences from Sheffield’s creative businesses on one online resource www.welcometosheffield. co.uk/makeyourselfathome, with ideas and experiences being added regularly.

Councillor Andy Bainbridge, Labour councillor for East Ecclesfield, said: “As we move into Tier Three and shops can reopen, this is a fantastic opportunity for people to get their gifts from their local high street and make a difference to businesses who have really struggled this year. “Our retailers have worked hard to make their businesses Covidsecure, so please remember to stay safe while shopping by respecting social distancing, wearing a face covering and regularly cleaning your hands.” Cllr Bainbridge has visited businesses in his ward to see what messages they’d like to share in the run up to the festive season. Brad Smith, owner of Greek Wraps, said: “The majority of our customers tend to be from the local area and we’ve really felt the commu- We’re still here, so please do carry nity pull together this year to sup- on visiting us.” port us and other businesses. The Ultimate Season Ticket…a special gift for St Luke’s Hospice

Issue 1144

Call 0114 283 1100

A LIFELONG Sheffield Wednesday fan has focused his photographic skills on helping raise money for St Luke’s Hospice by producing an exclusive photo book of matchday images from Hillsborough. Neil Kitson, a professional photographer from High Green who has taken pictures for the club on matchdays over the last five seasons, wanted to help St Luke’s after seeing the news of how charities were struggling to fundraise this year. The result is a 50-page limited edition book called ‘The Ultimate Season Ticket’ which takes you on a photographic journey of Sheffield Wednesday’s last five seasons. With only 500 numbered copies available the book is selling fast. The price is £10, plus postage and packaging with all proceeds going to St Luke’s. St Luke’s remains close to Neil’s heart after his mum, Pauline, was cared for by the hospice in the final months of her life.

It’s not too late to make a Will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local Estate Planning Consultant of 13 years experience. I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. Along with my colleague Haworth Ward-Drummond we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic Will • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney • Protecting your home for future generations • Pre-paid Funeral Plans We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.

A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the

highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Explaining the inspiration behind the project, Neil said: “I knew I wanted to do something to help after watching a report on how difficult it has been for organisations involved in the care and support of cancer patients and their families during the pandemic. “This reminded me of my mum and the wonderful care she received from St Luke’s.

“That was just the start of things and I can’t believe how we have managed to produce a book in the space of a month.” From Neil’s initial idea in November the book was created and printed in just over three weeks meaning it could be sold in time for Christmas. Neil is keen to point out that the book simply would not have been possible without the help of friends across the city, many of which have their own links to St Luke’s and wanted to help in any way they could. “There are too many people to mention but I just want them all to know how grateful I am,” said Neil. “I feel very lucky to have so many friends - both old and new - that have transformed my initial idea into a reality. I could not have done this without you.” Neil even managed to arrange sponsorship from Sheffield based firms Brown McLeod Chartered Accountants and Electric Canyon Management, who helped to cover the production costs, meaning all proceeds go to St Luke’s. A special bonus has been the involvement of Sheffield musician and Wednesday fan Richard Hawley, who heard about the project and wanted to be involved. Richard, whose dad Dave was also cared for by St Luke’s,

will sign all 500 copies of the book. Talking about his support for the book, Richard said: “Neil has done a fantastic job in pulling all this together so quickly. The book is brilliant and I feel privileged to have played a small part in this project, which raises money for a very special place that remains close to the hearts of thousands of people across Sheffield.” In what has been a challenging year for everyone, Neil hopes The Ultimate Season Ticket reminds Owls fans of that matchday feeling that many have missed out on over this year. “As a photographer and Wednesday fan I am in a lucky position to see and capture what it means to be at Hillsborough and be part of that family,” Neil said. “My hope is that through my pictures people can be transported back to Hillsborough providing that tingle every Wednesday fan feels on matchday. “That first sight of the ground, the clickety click of the turnstiles, the anticipation, the humour, the ecstasy….and the heartache. The memories. The Wednesday Family.” To Pre-order your copy of Neil’s book: The Ultimate Season Ticket, please email: neil.kitson.photography@ gmail.com

It has been used it to pad sealskin boots and in China it has been used to treat haemorrhoids and eye conditions. As well as being absorbent it also has a mild antiseptic quality making it ideal for wound dressings. This is where Sphagnum has been used to great effect. There are references throughout history of it being used to bind up wounds and staunch bleeding.

Local Notices Up to 1969 a British company was producing ointment, medical soap, suppositories etc. based on a distillate of peat moss. Whether new uses will be found for it in the future who knows. Kelsey is set to share her slimming secrets A SLIMMER who transformed her life by losing five stone is using her success to shape a whole new career helping other people change their lives and achieve their weight loss dreams too.

members all the way to their chosen target weight.

Kelsey Steele joined her local Slimming World group in Stocksbridge and has lost over five stone in weight, slimming from 14st 12lb to 9st 10lb!

“Setting targets, sharing recipes and other ideas, and working together as a group to overcome challenges and celebrate success is so important to a successful journey. That’s why, at my Slimming World group, there’ll be tons of support, encouragement and fun.

Now, she has trained as a consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s largest groupbased weight loss organisation, at their national training academy in Derbyshire. Members at the Grenoside group are getting ready to welcome Kelsey as their new Consultant when she takes over the group on December 30.

“Like a lot of slimmers, I had tried to lose weight so many times before by following numerous diets but they were never sustainable because I’d always get tired of restricting what I ate. I thought I was destined to struggle with my weight for the rest of my life, but when I came to Slimming World it was different.

The latest government figures reveal that around one in four adults are obese and it is estimated that, by 2034, this will increase to one in three. 62.5% of Sheffield’s population is now overweight or obese, and Kelsey says her new role has never been more important, especially after the year we have had.

“I never felt like I was on a diet. The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of tasty, filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish, you are never hungry and no foods are banned so there’s no deprivation. I couldn’t believe I’d found a way to lose weight without starving myself.

Kelsey said: “Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight but now I just can’t wait to get started.

“Slimming World isn’t just about changing what you eat. Becoming more active is important too. Our Body Magic programme takes the threat out of activity by showing people, many of whom have unpleasant memories of being forced to take part in activity at school, how they can build activity into their daily routine without having to take up traditional forms of exercise like going to the gym or running.

“After losing over five stone and completing my training, it’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on the experience, insight and understanding that helped me, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to target. “Support is really the most important thing. It all starts with feeling that you’re not alone. I couldn’t have lost weight without the weekly help, encouragement and understanding of my own Consultant Donna and group. “As someone who has lost weight myself I know the challenges people can face, which is why, along with the group, I will be there to support every one of my

CHURCH SUFFER SHOOTOUT HEARTBREAK IN FA VASE A report by Martin Webb THESE continue to be unusual times and it is great to see The Church back at ‘The Mem’ playing in front of a crowd. The 127 present saw Church in their first competitive home match since October 31. Longridge Town had switched venues to ensure this FA Vase second round match could be played. Both teams put on an exciting end to end cup tie. Church had nine shots on tar-

get and three off to Longridge’s four on and five off target.

He finished neatly, rolling the ball low to the left of goal with a well-placed shot. Church 0, Longridge 1.The first half ended with each team creating further half chances.

The game continued to swing one way and then the other and at 29 minutes, following a spell of Longridge pressure, Church moved the ball up field. As that move broke down, Longridge passed the ball with several, deft, one-touch passes and Owen Watkinson was sent free from the halfway line with a defence splitting pass.

The second half started with Church going close from a one-two into the box, but the shot was straight at the goalkeeper. After 51 minutes Sam Scrivens was through on goal, but the goalie saved low to his right-hand side, Sam was unable to convert the rebound. Church started to really put pressure on Lon-

Crampton & Moore

gridge, but there was always the danger of allowing Longridge too much space. Church rode their luck a couple of times, but some lovely work down the left-hand side saw Church move the ball at full stretch to Nicky Guest. The newly arrived substitute took the ball around a defender, into the box and scored low across the goalie to the left of goal. A tense nervous watch for those in the ground then followed; as each team had chances right up to the final whistle. This was nail-biting stuff and in the space of the last 20 seconds Longridge or Church could have won the game. The final whistle signalled penalties, both teams missed their first two. Longridge eventually came out winners 6-5.

Stocksbridge ready for local challenge STOCKSBRIDGE Rugby helped ready themselves for their return to rugby action with an extra training session at the weekend. The squad are still coming to terms with the new laws, especially around the breakdown and set piece, and wanted a session in the daylight to assist their preparation.

Established Retailer in Audio, Video and Electrical Goods

Stocksbridge Rugby will make the shortest of journeys to near neighbours Wortley RUFC on Saturday, with a 2pm kick off confirmed and a healthy crowd forecast.

Tyers will be looking to give recent signing Ryan Sweeney his first XV debut. The versatile back has impressed in training and could be in line to start at full back. Popular half back Ben Westby has also returned to training after a knee injury and becoming a father for the first time and he will be keen for some match action. The centre partnership could feature recent rugby league converts Dan Burt and Ben Tyers as Adam Middlehurst looks like being unavailable due to family commitments. With less focus on the set piece and no scrummages at all, Stocksbridge will be looking to James, Woodcock, Bowman and the burly figure of Keenan for a more all round contribution. Last week’s ‘top trainer’ award went to Andy Beal. Groot, as he is known to the squad, is looking forward to getting back out on the field and enjoying the collisions again. “I think we’ll be a bit ring rusty,” said Beal, “But it’ll be good just to get the ball in hand and deliver what we have been training for,” he added. Saturday’s clash is a ‘Christmas jumper’ themed event, with a prize for the best turned out. Stocksbridge Rugby are preparing for a new era as they say goodbye to former player, skipper, treasurer, committee man and chairman Nigel George, as he is relocating to be nearer his family. “He is the fabric and heartbeat of the club as we know it,” said a club spokesman. “A special player and a great man. He will be sorely missed. However, it is time for others to take the reigns now.” Although Nigel will be missed, he will certainly be welcome forever at Stocksbridge Rugby Club, provided they can open again someday!
