BACK TO LOCKDOWN: REACTION FROM CITY REGION MAYOR AND MP
PRIME Minister Boris Johnson last night announced that England will enter national lockdown restrictions from midnight on Tuesday January 5.
Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region responded: “We’ve seen an alarming increase in cases in recent weeks, initially concentrated in London and the South East, but now rates of infection and hospitalisation are rising extremely quickly in almost every region of the UK. The new variant of the virus is 50% to 70% more infectious
and transmissible and we must do all we can to limit its spread. “It’s devastating for families and businesses to start the New Year with tighter restrictions, but this is the only way we will save lives and prevent our NHS and hospitals from being overwhelmed in the toughest winter we have faced. “The Prime Minister took too long to take this decision and now needs to urgently set out how the government plans to contain the new variant of the virus until a vaccine can be fully rolled out.
“This plan must come alongside a comprehensive package of financial support for workers and businesses, assistance for schools and students to ensure no young person is further disadvantaged and a longterm recovery plan to level up the economy. Earlier today, I called for Christmas compensation for businesses in South Yorkshire: the support on offer was inadequate under Tier 3 and must now be urgently reviewed by the Treasury under this new lockdown.
“I understand just how weary and frustrated many people will be, but the lockdown in March reduced the spread of the virus, and if we all follow the rules, this one will as well. For the sake of our families, our communities, and our businesses, everyone needs to play their part.”
MP for Stocksbridge and Penistone, Miriam Cates, said: “Due to the new variant that has seen hospitalisations 40 per cent higher than seen during the first peak in April 2020, our NHS has been moved to COVID-19 alert level five.
“This alert means that if we do not take action now our NHS could be overwhelmed within the next three weeks. I know this news will be disappointing particularly in view of the local effort in trying to bring the rate of transmission down. “It is the hope of the NHS that by the end of February, the top four priority groups, i.e. the people most at risk from the virus, will have received a vaccine.”

Commoners seek new volunteers
FOR the last 27 years the Wadsley and Loxley Commoners have been working hard to protect and promote Wadsley and Loxley Common, which is well used by walkers and dogs, by local people and people from all over Sheffield. Activities that the group has been involved in include conservation work, wildlife surveys, conducted walks, talks, working with other organisations and liaising with local schools. All these activities are reliant on the support of the members of the group. Recently, two long serving committee members left the district and our conservation leader is looking to step down for health reasons. This is placing the committee in something of a crisis and new volunteers are desperately needed to come forward. If anyone feels they could contribute please get in touch. No one will be thrown in at the deep end and as volunteers people can withdraw at any time. With some extra help the Wadsley and Loxley Commoners can continue to make a significant contribution to the Common and the local community, as they have been doing for over 27 years. There is more information about the Wadsley and Loxley Commoners and the common itself on their website, www.walc. epizy.com, on facebook (Wadsley and loxley commoners) and the contact address is walccontact@yahoo.com.

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe and daughter Alice show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities as their father. They are now helping the successful window company build on the 36 years of trading.

Local MP welcomes support for Penistone Paramount cinema MIRIAM Cates, MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, has welcomed a ÂŁ95,844 Government cash injection into Penistone’s Paramount Cinema. Miriam said: “The Paramount cinema is so important to the Penistone community but it has really struggled this year because of COVID-19. “While the pandemic looks set to continue for some months yet, it’s so important that the cinema is still here when we get back to normal. I’m delighted that Penistone Paramount is benefitting from this national fund and I had the privilege of being shown around the recently upgraded auditorium by Cinema Manager Brian Barnsley.â€? Built as the Assembly Hall for Penistone in 1914, the Penistone Paramount is a single screen 344 seat cinema operated by Penistone Town Council. The Auditorium as refurbished last summer 2020 and now benefits from new seating, carpets and decoration, the house lights have been upgraded and the front steps restored to their former glory. Brian Barnsley said: “We are very pleased with this grant award, this funding secures the future of the Paramount
in these very trying times. The funding is to cover the costs incurred of making the building Covid secure, and supporting the cinema when we are able to welcome customers again.â€? Penistone Paramount was one of more than 200 independent cinemas across England being supported at Christmas with ÂŁ16 million in grants from the Government’s ÂŁ1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund. The Culture Recovery Fund is a package worth ÂŁ1.57 billion to protect Britain’s world-class cultural, arts and heritage institutions through the coronavirus pandemic. Many of our much-loved institutions – from theatres, museums and pantomimes – have been able to apply for funding to help weather the impacts of coronavirus. Miriam added: “Community assets like the Penistone Paramount are the cultural and social heart of our towns and villages. I know how much hard work has gone into keeping the Cinema going over recent years, and this grant will hopefully ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy all it has to offer.â€?

Discover Sheffield’s hidden gem parks, woodlands and green spaces WE’RE sharing some of Sheffield’s ‘hidden gem’ green spaces to help people discover new places to visit and reduce crowds at some of our busiest parks. Boasting more than 800 green spaces across Sheffield, our parks, woodlands, trails and gardens have been a real place of sanctuary and freedom for us all during the coronavirus pandemic, providing places to meet friends and family, exercise, relax and enjoy taking in the natural environment. Here in The Outdoor City you really can make yourself at home in our spectacular outdoors, there’s so much to see and do. Watch our Make Yourself at Home video on our great outdoors and get inspired. Coronavirus restrictions have meant an increase in visitors and although there are so many places to visit in the city, a few parks have become firm favourites for many, such as Endcliffe, Millhouses, Graves and Forge Dam, which are now becoming overcrowded during peak times at weekends and holidays. Due to the current pandemic we must all follow the restrictions in place to slow the spread of Coronavirus and keep people safe. Too many visitors in these locations makes it harder for people to adhere to social distancing guidelines and increases the risk of becoming a contact, so we’re asking people to consider discovering somewhere new for your days out. We’ve listed some of our favourite locations below and we’ll be profiling these more closely on our Parks & Countryside social media channels throughout the coming weeks. On your next trip out, can you walk from your home to avoid unnecessary travel and get those extra steps in, and think
about trying some of our faves – you never know what you’ll discover.
to Sheffield Parks and Countryside on Facebook. Now go explore.
You won’t find a café at them all, but you could stop off on the way, support a local business and grab a take-out brew for your walk, or save yourself a few pounds and make up a flask of your favourite winter warmer.
Our Hidden Gems
There are many natural activities to take part in with your family. You can download various activity sheets such as leaf collecting for nature art projects, identifying bird calls, bug and insect hunts and many more. Try some of our favourite activities from: •
Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust
•
Woodland Trust activities
•
RSPB
With parks getting busier we are also seeing an increase in litter. We’re working really hard to keep our outdoors clean and lovely for everyone however, to help us protect our natural environment we ask everyone to take their rubbish home with them if a bin is not available or is already full. We ask people not to leave waste at the side of bins as this can easily blow away and attract vermin. Please also read about how to enjoy and respect our outdoor spaces and surrounding countryside so that we can all continue to enjoy them. We’d love to see you out and about exploring new locations in Sheffield and sharing your own hidden gems with us so others can then visit them. You can share your adventures by tagging @parkssheffield on Twitter and Instagram or posting
Here’s just a selection of some of our fantastic local parks, woodlands and green spaces, but there’s many, many more. North/North East Sheffield: Westwood Country Park - A great site steeped in history - the route of the old railway (opened in 1854) can still be detected running through the country park, where part of the track bed is used as a footpath! For those who need to drive there, car parking is available at the Reservoir’s edge off Taverner way. Chapeltown Park – Try this destination if you’re looking for a great playground or try some great walks on the Blackburn Valley Trail. Parkwood Springs – A perfect combination of good woodland walks and fabulous city views as well as plenty of undulating bike trails for the adrenaline junkies. Concord Park – Here you can see the 16th Century Crook Barn, let the kids burn off energy on the playground, enjoy great views and find walks linking to the enchanting Wooley Woods - all with on-site parking. Colley Park - recently redeveloped this fantastic community park in Parson Cross has a brand new playground, bike track and parkour facility, as well as sports courts and a huge grassed area.
Green worries over more traffic in Malin Bridge SHEFFIELD Green Party has responded to the consultation on the Mottram by-pass, saying increased road capacity will increase congestion in Sheffield’s road hotspots.
we would prefer to see the money spent on better public transport links between the two cities. There must be an incentive for more people to travel by rail and not by private car.”
The consultation by Highways England, asked for views on road building to increase traffic capacity on the A57 Snake Pass route between Sheffield and Manchester. Sheffield Council, along with High Peak Borough Council and Tameside Council, has already declared a climate emergency.
Christine Gilligan Kubo of Hillsborough Green Party commented: “This council must prioritise public transport, walking and cycling; and stop nodding through damaging planning applications that bring many more car journeys to blight local communities.
Sheffield Greens are concerned that improving the attractiveness of the Snake Pass will mean more cars squeezing through Broomhill and Malin Bridge to reach the A57.
Hillsborough Green Party’s Christine Gilligan Kubo at Malin Bridge
Cllr Douglas Johnson said: “Heavy traffic through Mottram, on the Sheffield to Manchester route, has been a longterm issue. But rather than more road-building and private car mileage,
“Coming soon to this area are a new Lidl at the bottom of Stannington Road and a retail park with an Aldi opposite the Wednesday ground on Penistone Road. All these direct more traffic through an already clogged and polluted Malin Bridge gyratory. Malin Bridge and Hillsborough Corner face gridlock and the trams are also delayed by this congestion which needs to be addressed urgently.”

Sheffield nurse sets up virtual swear jar to help Chapeltown-based charity A SHEFFIELD nurse has donated hundreds of pounds from a virtual swear jar to a Chapeltown-based rare disease charity. Ian Todd, charge nurse at the Northern General Hospital, decided to ‘fine’ any friend who used a swear word during their group chats on WhatsApp, raising £300 during November. The money has been given to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA UK); a national charity based in Chapeltown.
Ian, 28, lives in Crookes and chose the charity in support of his sister Lily, who has the rare disease pulmonary hypertension. The serious condition, also known as PH, causes high pressure in the blood vessels supplying the lungs - putting increased pressure on the heart. Despite her living close by in Rotherham, Ian hasn’t seen 29-year-old Lily for almost a year because of her vulnerability to COVID-19. He said: “My sister is very poorly, and I thought that donating the money to the PHA UK, who have supported our family so
much, would be a nice thing to do.” Ian is pictured with friend Joshua Evers, who was the WhatsApp group member fined the most for swearing in November. Stocksbridge man Iain Armstrong, chair of the PHA UK, said: “This was a fantastic way of raising money safely, and we applaud such a simple but clever idea. We were very touched to receive this donation and I would like to say a big thank you to Ian and his potty-mouthed friends!”
Music Makes Memories FOLLOWING the huge success of the inaugural Music Makes Memories, a second event has now been arranged. This will be at 2pm on Sunday January 17, with the fantastic Jessica Mary Brett. The event shall be raising awareness and funds for the charity, Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care (SCCCC) which gives support to older people across Sheffield. The
event has been kindly sponsored by SOAR and People Keeping Well. Everyone is more than welcome for an hour of brilliant live music - ideal for all the family. The Facebook link to join can be found by searching for Jessica Mary Brett. How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

WOODHEAD Mountain Rescue Team are looking for help to hit an urgent target for an essential emergency response vehicle. The team had some very bad luck at the end of 2020 and now find themselves having to raise money pretty quickly. The team said: “We had to retire one of our operational vehicles very unexpectedly, and we are now a crucial front line blue light vehicle short. The team experienced it’s busiest year ever in 2020 and the new year promises too be even more demanding, especially while we are missing a vehicle.

MOUNTAIN RESCUE TEAM LOOK TO RAISE £40,000 FOR NEW VEHICLE
“Our target of £40k will allow us to buy a nearly new, super-capable, all-terrain, Land Rover Discovery which will be our new primary off-road vehicle for the next 10 years or more. We are asking the generous business community, and good people who want to support the essential lifesaving volunteer work of mountain rescue, to come to our aid and help us reach our crucial target. “In addition to being a crucial part of the team’s work, saving lives in remote and hostile places, the new vehicle will also offer a fantastic opportunity for businesses!
“See our donor packages for details of how your business logo could be proudly positioned on the vehicle for the whole of it’s operational life with the team. That’s potentially up to 10 years of publicity for your business. “In addition to space on the vehicle, we are offering other exciting opportunities for businesses including appearing on our website, photo opportunities, social media coverage, and even the chance to get staff involved in our training exercises which could double-up as novel networking opportunity with your fellow business supporters.
“Fancy having a name on the rear windscreen? We are offering a truly unique gift opportunity for friends or family to be included on our ‘window of well wishers’. You’ll proudly sit alongside fellow donors for the whole of the vehicles operational life with the team. “That’s potentially a 10 year gift to a loved one and a great help to the life-saving work of Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team.” If you can help, visit the Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team’s Facebook page.

Richard Caborn to continue as Sheffield Business & Industry Ambassador
COUNCILLOR Bob Johnson, the new Leader of Sheffield City Council, can confirm that Richard Caborn will continue as Sheffield’s Ambassador for Business and Industry, a role he has served in since 2014. The role, which is unpaid, has seen Caborn support the council in numerous economic projects over recent years, most notably his role pioneering the development of Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park. However, he has also provided support on other key economic projects such as HS2, Heart of the City and devolution. Councillor Johnson was given a tour of Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park facility. The site has been a hub of some key successes for the city in recent years including Sheffield Hallam University’s Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre which opened in January and hosts the National Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine. As well as a new University Technical College specialising in computing, health science and sport science, a school and sports facilities which have hosted home games for Sheffield Eagles Rugby League Football Club and Sheffield United Women Football Club.
Councillor Bob Johnson, said: “Richard brings such a wealth of experience, knowledge and contacts that are massively beneficial for Sheffield. He continues to be a huge asset for the city, which is plain for everyone to see just by looking at everything he has made happen at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, bringing together so many partners across the city to renew Sheffield as a city of sport in the 21st century. “I am delighted that he has agreed to continue in this role which he is not only working on the more visible projects such as Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, but he also promotes Sheffield externally and has helped to make our case to key decision makers in Westminster. “It’s vital as we tackle what will be some of the greatest economic challenges we have faced as a city and need to develop a big new ambitious agenda to stimulate our economic recovery. Richard can make a massive contribution to developing our ideas and ambitions as well as making them happen, securing investment and bringing some of our key partners together.” Richard Caborn, Sheffield Ambassador for Business & Industry, said: “It has been
a privilege to support Julie Dore over these past years in some important projects which have come to fruition under Julie’s leadership. This has included the creation of Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, which I have been proud to lead on as well as providing support and advice in developments such as the Heart of the City, as well as bringing HS2 into our city centre. “I’m pleased to be continuing in this role under Bob Johnson as the new Leader of the Council. Never has it been more important that we pull together as a city and a region as we look to put Sheffield at the heart of the economic recovery. “We have major economic drivers in the city that to give us the platform to create jobs and opportunities for everyone and put Sheffield at the heart of the UK economy. The new leader has set out the importance of the city coming together to deliver on this potential to be and I will be pleased to offer my support to help to achieve this.”

Stocksbridge play Wortley in friendly STOCKSBRIDGE Rugby played their first game in a long time against local rivals Wortley RUFC in the run up to Christmas, winning 43-0. Unfortunately, with the new lockdown now in force, it may be some time until they play again with their next game on January 9 now cancelled.
Jacob Crosby, both showed enough ability to suggest they will feature regularly when the season eventually starts up. The Bradfield Brewery Man of the Match award went to the hard working Callum Green, with Frith and Whittaker also in the running, whilst UFC Chicken sponsored Scotty Bowskill finished with four conversion successes from seven attempts.
In truth, the final score didn’t matter too much as it was a real pleasure to see competitive “Rugby was the winner today,” said club caprugby action return to the valley, where both tain Joe Jones, absent from the field with a teams contributed to an enjoyable afternoon. knee injury. The visitors fielded three under 20s in their “It was great to get a run out, get some game ranks and gave first XV debuts to the pacey time into the lads and to score a few tries.” Ryan Sweeney and to promising youngster Huge thanks need to go to the Wortley club for hosting the fixture, which could become a regular seasonal event.

“There’s been plenty of times I’ve nearly thrown the towel in,” he said. “I always managed to get my head together and keep going. “I didn’t really reach the heights of the sport that I once hoped. I would have done things a little different if I had my time over, you live and learn. But reaching 10 years has been my achievement. I’m proud of that. “I’ve loved every minute of my time over there and I hope that I have done all my clubs proud.”

And he’s revealed how he was always planning to bring the curtain down at the end of this year. He said: “I didn’t really tell too many people, mainly due to the fact that I wanted people to know I was there for the right reasons, but 2020 was going to be my last season. “Not only did I get the privilege of having my testimonial, but I was going to be lucky enough to be a part of Sheffield moving up to the top league and I was more than excited to be a part of that. “Riding with Nicki Pedersen and also my good mates Jack Holder, Josh Grajczonek and Kyle Howarth would have been the dream end to my time over there. “I was probably the fittest I had been and was 100% committed to doing a good job for Sheffield, the toughest part about 2020 was probably missing out on the actual season. “I was so looking forward to the opportunity and hopefully bringing home some silverware for the Sheffield promotion and their loyal fans. It’s a bitter pill to swallow that I now won’t be part of it.”
