CHANCELLOR JOINS SCHOOL LESSON
OUGHTIBRIDGE Primary School welcomed a very special guest to Mr Delaney’s Year Six virtual maths lesson on Friday –Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak. Mr Sunak set mathematics problems for the pupils before answering questions from the eager bunch of kids from the ‘outstanding’ school. It was a less intense grilling than Rishi is used to with pupils wanting to know which football team he supports, how much sleep he gets and what he wanted to be when he was a child. School Business Manager Catherine Askham said of the virtual visit: “I think Mr Delaney explained it as an exciting but surreal experience. “We’d like to thank Rishi for taking the time out of what we understand is a very busy schedule to take part.”
Mr Delaney presents the virtual lesson with Rishi Sunak.

Party goers fined under new lockdown restrictions
ALMOST two weeks in to the third national lockdown, South Yorkshire Police are once again urging people to stay home, protect the NHS and save lives. This comes as officers were called to 295 incidents over the weekend, many of which were for people attending house parties and gatherings.
“People are in a position now where they know what is asked of them, and the vast majority are making sacrifices in order to adhere to the rules. We need to ensure that the efforts of the majority are not sabotaged by the few people who continue to ignore the rules.
The science behind Covid-19 has always show that transmission of the virus is highest when different households come together and mix indoors. Unless a support or childcare bubble, or other exception applies, this is why such gatherings are currently prohibited by law; that is where the biggest danger lies.
“We have always been clear in our approach in that we do not want to fine people, but we will do if proportionate and necessary. Our officers would rather be out in their communities tackling drugs supply, investigating burglaries, and reducing violent crime, and the more people adhere to the restrictions, the more they can focus on other matters.”
Since Tuesday January 5, South Yorkshire Police have received 1,417 of reports of suspected breaches of Covid-19 regulations. Between January 8 and January 15, they issued 127 Fixed Penalty Notices, of which 92 were for indoor gatherings. At the weekend, 15 people were fined at a house party at an AirBnb in Scotland Street, Sheffield.
Traffic officers will also be increasing their presence around beauty spots in the county due to the increased amount of people travelling there to exercise.
Explaining the force’s position, Superintendent Paul McCurry, said: “We know that is it not easy to be apart from friends and loved ones, but sadly house parties and similar gatherings provide the greatest risk to public health, and for this reason it is only right that this is where we focus our attention.”
Supt McCurry added: “It is not against the law to travel for exercise, but we do strongly encourage people to stay local where possible and stay two metres apart. Road traffic collisions obviously put additional strain on emergency services and we want to minimise these. Due to the weather, roads and beauty spots were fairly quiet this weekend, but we expect this will change. Please only travel where necessary.”

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe and daughter Alice show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities as their father. They are now helping the successful window company build on the 36 years of trading.

15 community vaccination centres now live in Sheffield NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has announced that 15 covid community vaccination centres are now up and running in Sheffield. In Sheffield, groups of GP practices are working together in their primary care networks (PCNs) to administer the vaccine to their local communities and care homes via 15 community vaccination centres. All but one of these centres are based at GP practices in the city with the remaining one being at a church.
Alun Windle, chief nurse and covid vaccination lead at NHS Sheffield CCG, said: “GP practices have been working hard over the last few weeks to deliver the vaccine to their patients and in care homes, at the same time as continuing to provide care to all those who need it. It’s a great achievement to vaccinate so many people thereby saving lives. “We now have vaccination centres in all 15 primary care networks in the city meaning people can be vaccinated in their local area. All 15 centres are open as planned exactly
one month after opening the first on 14 December. “People are being vaccinated in order of priority as set out in JCVI (Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation) guidance. We’re currently vaccinating over 80s, care home residents, practice staff and care home workers.” Vaccine invitations will be sent to those eligible when it’s their turn. The CCG is asking people not to contact their GP or hospital about the vaccines, or just turn up without an appointment.
Dr Tim Mothersdale from Manor Park Medical Centre, one of the first community vaccination centres, said: “We have been working hard to vaccinate patients in practice and at our local care homes. It has been a whole team effort with staff from across all practices in our network pulling together to make this happen. I want to thank patients for coming for their vaccination when invited and would encourage others to take up the offer if invited.” Freda France from Shiregreen was the first person to have a covid vaccination at a GP practice in Shef-
field when she had the vaccination at the Health Care Surgery on Palgrave Road back in December. Freda said: “I’d say to anyone who is unsure about having the vaccination when they’re offered it, just go for it. It’s just like the flu jab - only a little prick! I’m glad I’ve had it.” Last week community vaccination centres received the Oxford Astra Zeneca vaccine. This vaccine can be more easily stored and moved and has allowed us to start vaccinating care home residents and patients who are housebound.
Citizen science project calls out for more rain gauge hosts ARE you stuck at home in this national lockdown looking out of the window at the rain? Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership needs your help! We know it’s been a wet few years across the Sheffield Lakeland but a citizen science rain project seeks to find out more about how rainfall amounts vary across the region. The Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership and Sheffield Hallam University are carrying out a joint research project funded by the Heritage Fund thanks to National Lottery players. The project has set up six monitoring stations on streams over the Lakeland to record water levels and flow at times of high rainfall. To make sense of this data, we want to understand how rainfall patterns and to-
tals from valley to valley, or between Strines, Bradfield and Loxley, for example.
across the area and if these can be predicted based on weather pattern and time of year.
need to make any adjustments to our models to account for differences.
Local residents are supporting this research by hosting rain gauges in their gardens and sending the data back to Dr Jon Bridge, an environmental geoscientist and associate professor in the Department of the Natural and Built Environment at Sheffield Hallam University.
Dr Jon Bridge told us about the project and locations where the project needs more rain gauge hosts to come forward.
“Throughout 2020, we’ve had data coming in from around Rivelin, Stannington and Storrs, Oughtibridge, Wharncliffe Side and Stocksbridge. In 2021, our challenge is to start some records in the more rural parts of the region – Bolsterstone, Ewden Village, Wigtwizzle, Bradfield, Hollow Meadows and Lodge Moor or Redmires.”
As part of this citizen science project the SLLP are looking for more local residents to host rain gauges and contribute to this interesting work. The data that’s coming out so far is promising and initial results are well aligned with the Met Office’s rainfall data. It will ultimately show if there are any spatial trends
“We are trying to understand patterns of stream flow – and how we can reduce flooding through work to ‘slow the flow’ of water into streams – at almost a field-by-field scale in the Lakeland region. While there are ‘official’ rain gauges scattered around the region, there are none actually within the areas we are working. This project will help us decide how much we can trust the Weston Park weather data to predict rainfall in Loxley, or Wigtwizzle, for example, and whether we

WALKING THE PATHS OF THE STONE AGE DEEPCAR is well known by archaeologists the world over who specialise in studying the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age, c. 9,500BC – 4,000BC). It was the age when hunter-gatherers, moving from place to place, lived much like Native Americans or Native Australians did until recent times. They probably had larger semipermanent settlements in areas with the richest and most diverse natural resources, far out on the inundated lands we now call the North Sea (often referred to by archaeologists as ‘Doggerland’, after Dogger Bank). Those lands had mostly vanished beneath the sea by about 5,000BC. Until then, groups probably ranged far and wide from there, making temporary camps in different places at different times of the year, taking advantage of seasonally available food and other resources. Deepcar is famous for the discovery of a rare example of a temporary camp in which people lived, defined by a dense circle of stones probably used to weigh down the edge of a tent. Inside, there was a hearth, and thousands of flint artefacts. All these things laid undisturbed where they had been left sometime in the Early Mesolithic (9,500-7,500BC). Normally, only scatters of flints alone give archaeologists clues as to how and where people lived back then. Scatters of flints don’t sound that exciting, but a surprising amount can be learned about people from what kinds of tools were made from stone, and the sources of the type of stone used.
Flint is a type of glassy stone that can be made into different shapes easily. Its edge is as sharp as a razor blade. Before metal, it was ideal for making tools with but only occurs naturally many miles from Stocksbridge. More can be learned about ancient people from the environments in which the flints are found. Deepcar, for example, would have overlooked a small swamp flanked by steep wooded hills during the Early Mesolithic. Although Deepcar is very special, much more can be learned about our ancestors when those smaller, widely distributed scatters of flints are studied as well, and added into the mix. The other great thing about them is that they often turn up in the wild and beautiful places where many of us like to walk. The people that made them didn’t make impressive monuments like Stonehenge. On the other hand the whole landscape, with its valleys, hills and streams can be thought of as their monument. Bolsterstone Archaeology and Heritage Group, with the generous support of the Bridge Community Shop, was recently able to commission freelance archaeologist Dr Tim Cockrell to examine previously unrecorded flint scatters from Broomhead Moor, Midhope Moors and Ewden Valley. He was also able to add them to the records of already known scatters from the area between those places and the Don Valley, with its better known site at Deepcar. Most of the scatters consist largely of later Mesolithic artefacts (c.7,500 - 4,000BC), although some earlier material is also present.
They’re distributed in quite small quantities compared to Deepcar, mostly numbering dozens or a few hundred at a time. Deepcar furnished 23,000 artefacts when it was excavated in the early 1960s. The scatters tend to lie near the sources of the streams that feed into the rivers in the valleys below, often in sheltered spots or overlooked by higher ground. Sometimes they were deposited along the edges of the valleys themselves, on natural terraces above the small floodplains of the rivers. How the many scatters of small numbers of flints from the Late Mesolithic relate to the fewer, but larger, scatters of flints from the earlier period, as at Deepcar, might hold a clue to the changing way the landscape was inhabited thousands of years ago. Could it
be connected with the drowning of Doggerland? Bolsterstone Archaeology and Heritage Group normally hosts talks on these and other subjects at Christchurch in Stocksbridge on the third Wednesday of most months. With Covid-19 restrictions the talks sadly have not been held recently. Technology though is coming to the Group’s rescue - Tim Cockrell will be giving a talk about all the above on Wednesday January 20 at 7.30pm by Zoom. If you would like to listen to the talk (open to anyone, you don’t have to be a member), contact ruthmorgan755@hotmail.com and a link will be emailed to you - when you click on the link, you wait until the speaker is ready and then relax with your favourite tipple while the proceedings unfold!
Stocksbridge and Upper Don Councillor appointed to Sheffield Cabinet FOLLOWING the recent appointment of Hillsborough Councillor Bob Johnson as the new Leader of Sheffield Council, his previous role as Sheffield Cabinet Member for Transport and Development will now be taken by local Stocksbridge Councillor Julie Grocutt. The role leads on several key areas including planning and transport, whilst in the role Councillor Bob Johnson developed a new housing plan to meet Sheffield’s housing targets without building on the treasured local green belt. Speaking about her appointment Julie said: “People in Stocksbridge and Upper Don know that I’m committed to improving public transport and to protecting our green spaces from development. “I worked hard alongside the community to keep Hollin Busk free from development and I know that Sheffield residents, no matter where they
are in the city, value their green spaces and I will work with them in protecting these. “We have already devised a plan to keep the Green Belt free from development which it will be important to deliver. “I’m also committed to helping everyone travel around, as easily as possible, and I will support Mayor Dan Jarvis in his work to implement a better bus service and deliver improved services
and cheaper fares which we know local people want to see. “The pandemic has of course changed everything, but it won’t be here forever. I’m looking forward to a future where Sheffield has better housing and public transport, and real protection for green spaces. This is what I am working towards” The appointment was announced at a council meeting on January 6.

It’s not too late to make a Will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local Estate Planning Consultant of 13 years experience. I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. Along with my colleague Haworth Ward-Drummond we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:
• Making a basic Will • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney • Protecting your home for future generations • Pre-paid Funeral Plans We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.
A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the
highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.
Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

We have demanded to the Parish that no such rise should again take place. Please see below our letter to John Housley, Liberal Democrat and current Chair of the Parish- which we thought may be of interest to Ecclesfield Parish residents: Dear Chair of Ecclesfield Parish, Last year Ecclesfield Parish Council took the decision to increase the local parish precept by 69.4%. At the time we thought this was a shocking decision, and we are hoping that a similar hike will not be forthcoming again for this year. The last 12 months have been of great difficulty to everyone locally and we are kindly asking that the Parish adopt a much more sensible position for this year. Labour has no Parish councillors to formally challenge the rulings of the Parish – made up of Liberal Democrats and Independent Parish councillors – but we are kindly asking that you adopt a sensible approach to Parish finances and consult more widely with residents of Ecclesfield Parish. Best wishes, Andy Bainbridge – Labour Sheffield City Councillor for East Ecclesfield Ward (covering Chapeltown & Ecclesfield) and Adam Hurst – Labour Sheffield City Councillor for West Ecclesfield (covering Burncross, Grenoside & High Green).
Event supported by Penistone and Stocksbridge Labour Party, Green New Deal, Build Back Better, ACORN Sheffield, Upper Don Renewable Energy Ltd, Bullhouse Mill, Barnsley TUC, Don Valley Railway, Nurses United, Better Buses Campaign, Youth Climate Strikers. The aims is to let people know what is happening in existing campaigning groups working in the area and provide a place for cross-fertilisation of ideas and plans. Organisers hope you will want to put your ideas into the pot and to work with the campaigns showcased to ‘Build Back Better’. The call will open at 2pm for new Zoomies to practice and to set out the format of the event. Please arrive earlier so you can be “in your seat and familiarised with the controls and how the event is running before we start. It will begin at 2.30pm with an introduction by the chair, Barry Tylee from Upper Don Renewable Energy, and an explanation by Laura Ho of Green New Deal’s work. There will be breakout groups for discussion and action planning after the speakers, followed by a 15 minute interval before resuming the full session to summarise and finalise action for the future. Top tips for driving safely in wintery conditions
WHILST snowfall and frosted roads make for beautiful scenery, wintery weather also makes driving far more difficult and dangerous for even the most experienced drivers.
You can also mitigate the risk of damage by adding antifreeze to the water in the engine’s cooling system – combining anti-freeze with water reduces the chances of a frozen or cracked engine.
The increased risk of accidents and breakdowns, caused by conditions such as ice, snow and darker days, is not only a concern for personal safety: this could also result in new claims having to be made on your car insurance and therefore more expensive quotes in the future.
3. Remember, slow and spacious.
To help drivers across the UK be better prepared for driving in cold weather and reduce the risk of accidents, the experts at Rooster Insurance, an appbased car insurance provider for good drivers, have shared some top tips for driving safely this winter. 1. Be prepared for the journey. First things first, it is important to prepare for your journey and do so diligently. Even if you are just popping to the local shop, pay close attention to the route of your journey and, if there are alternative routes available, try to avoid any exposed country roads. You can also expect journeys in wintery weather to take longer than usual, both because congestion on roads is likely and driving more slowly is far safer in such conditions, so allow yourself more time to complete the journey. Regardless of the length of your journey, it is a good idea to prepare an emergency kit to keep in your car for icy weather. This kit should include winter driving essentials such as a de-icer, an ice scraper, water, a torch, jump leads and don’t forget a portable phone charger too. 2. Check your engine. Before you start driving in snowy conditions, it is important to make sure that not only are you prepared for the journey, but that your car is too. When checking your engine, it is a good idea to consider changing your oil as this can reduce the risk of engine damage.
skidding is more common in such conditions, pay close attention to your steering and brakes – make sure both are as gentle as possible to avoid harsh movements or sudden jolts on the road. It is likely that major roads will have been gritted to counteract skidding and whilst this is preferable for drivers, it is important to be aware of gritters and any vehicles spreading de-icer. These vehicles may throw out grit on to your car, if you get too close, which can be distracting to drivers and damaging to your car itself.
When it comes to driving in the snow or on icy roads, there are two key phrases to remember: drive slowly and allow space on the roads. So there you have it, some simple yet effecParticularly when you are driv- tive tips to help you stay safe on the roads ing uphill, keep as much space in wintery conditions. as possible between yourself and other cars on the road – this will help you to maintain a steady speed without having to suddenly change gears.
Rooster Insurance is a brand-new way for good drivers to buy car insurance. Drivers download the Rooster Insurance app on Apple or Android, drive around for about three weeks, then get a premium based Stopping distances for cars primarily on their driving behaviour. can be ten times slower in icy For more information and to take the test conditions too, so make sure and get a quote, please visit joinrooster. to drive slowly and carefully co.uk to avoid losing control of your vehicle. 4. Keep windscreens clear. Before you set off, make sure your windscreen is clean and clear. A common mistake that many drivers make when trying to melt ice is pouring boiling water directly on to their windscreen - this can cause your windscreen to crack so is something to be avoided. Instead, opt for useful tools such as de-icer and an ice scraper to clean your windows and, if you do need to use any water, allow time for the water to cool after boiling before pouring onto the windscreen. Another top tip is to ensure that your engine is topped up with shop bought screen wash, which is far less likely to freeze than soapy water. Keeping your windscreen clear in harsh conditions can be very difficult, even when you have taken precautions, so do not hesitate to pull over at available service stations, the leftmost lane on motorways or any safe stopping points on your route to allow time to demist your screen whilst driving. 5. Stay alert on slippery roads. The icier a road, the more slippery it is, a fact which is very daunting for many drivers. As

PARK STEELS RE-LAUNCH 500 CLUB - BE IN IT TO WIN IT TO create essential funding and to flourish after the Covid-19 pandemic, Stocksbridge Parks Steels are re-launching their ‘500 Club’, which gives members a chance to win at least ÂŁ250 each month. A spokesperson for the club said: “We hope that supporters of the club, and their friends and acquaintances, will join in and become a member of the 500 Club and create much needed funds for the club. “Below is an outline of the scheme and how you can join. This really is an important venture for the club at this moment in time, as we try to combat the reality of losing all
of our football and commercial income.â€? The scheme is based around as many members as possible paying ÂŁ5 per month, with a proposed monthly pay out of at least ÂŁ250. Or at least 50% of the contributions. How to play: 1. Set up a standing order to pay Stocksbridge Park Steels FC at ÂŁ5 per month on or before the last day of the month, starting Jan 2021. The sort code is 40-09-12 and the account number is 92603934. 2. Put ‘500 club (+ your name)’ as the reference, so the club knows who the payment is from (e.g. ‘500 club Bob Downabit’).
3. When you have done this, email rpg. sps@mail.com or the website, with your name and confirmation that you have set up the standing order. You will then be sent your draw numbers by return. You will receive five numbers per ÂŁ5 entry. 4. Look out for the dates of draws on the club website and social media. The draw will take place live on the last day of the month. 5. Details of the scheme and monthly draw results will also be accessible from the homepage of our club website and social media platforms. 6. Until the member- number, the prize ship of the 500 Club fund will be applied reaches its maximum at 50% of the total
income received in that month. Starting in January, there
will be seven prizes - three ÂŁ50s and four ÂŁ25s. For every 10
new members another ÂŁ25 prize will be added and so on.
You need to be in it to win it!
