Council opens consultation on library enhancements SHEFFIELD City Council have launched a public consultation about improvements to libraries, after we announced last year that each community hub library would benefit from a £10,000 cash boost. The investment means that each library in Sheffield, including volunteer-run libraries, will have extra money to enhance their space and the services they offer. Now we’re asking local residents for their opinions on how our libraries should use this vital funding to best serve the community and library users’ needs. Library staff have identified options for improving their library space and are asking for views on those options and for any other suggestions people may have. As each library space is unique, there are different options put forward for each library. The consultation is open until February 28 and is restricted to Sheffield City Council run libraries. For more information on volunteer led libraries, people should contact these directly.
Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council said: “Libraries play a vital role in our city and have been cherished by residents for decades, helping us to discover, connect and engage with our surroundings and build better lives and stronger communities. “The people of Sheffield are at the heart of our library services, which is why we want to hear how they think these neighbourhood resources should be shaped to better suit the diverse and changing needs of our society today. I urge anybody with an interest in their local library and how it improves the well-being of their local community to take part in our online survey before it closes at the end of the month.” More information and the online consultation survey can be found at https://sheffield.citizenspace.com/communities-business-strategy/ sheffield-city-council-community-hub-libraries-10k/. Hard copies of the questionnaire can also be collected from local libraries.

Historic Sheffield shopping mall and office estate acquired EVOLVE Estates, the national commercial property investment company, has acquired Hillsborough Barracks in Sheffield, for an undisclosed sum. Set within a walled estate of 11.5 acres, the grade II listed Hillsborough Barracks comprises a shopping parade with converted offices and separate office buildings. The estate was originally used as a War Office in 1848 and was repurposed 40 years ago as a retail and business destination, with multi-storey car park, local shopping parade, offices, The Garrison Hotel and McDonalds, both of which have long leasehold. Also included in the sale is Dragoon Court, an office building that has planning permission to be converted into 32 one-bedroom residential units. The Parade, which was brought to market by Opus North LLP with an asking price of £4.2m, is anchored by Morrison’s, which was not included in the sale, and has a mix of high street and independent traders, including Poundland and Extra Care Charity Trust. Joe O’Keefe, of Evolve Estates, said: “We’re pleased to have completed the acquisition of this superb mixed-use site in Sheffield, which has a strong retail centre, a good office complex offer, and excellent transport links to the
city centre and local residential areas. “We recognised the huge potential of this site, so were keen to bring it into our increasing portfolio of local district centres and convenience parades. We’re looking forward to working with local retailers, businesses and organisations to see how we can best add value to our purchase and benefit the local community. “This deal marks our second acquisition of 2021, which demonstrates our confidence in the sector in the medium and long term and our positive plans for growth.” Commercial property investment company LCP has been appointed to manage the centre for Evolve Estates, which is part of the LCP group of companies. Simon Eatough, LCP asset management, said: “We have a reputation for intensive asset management and attracting high street names to retail centres, so we’ll be working closely with Evolve and getting to know the tenants of Hillsborough Barracks to ensure we play a central role in building a strong, community-focused shopping parade that gives locals the retail stores they need and want on their doorstep.” Prime acted as agents for Evolve Estates, with Allsop acting for Opus North LLP.
Online meeting tackles local climate change NEARLY 40 people attended the first of a series of Zoom events, ‘Tackling the Climate Emergency in Penistone and Stocksbridge’, last Saturday. There was a brief talk by Danielle Paffard from the national Green New Deal (GND) followed by four speakers from local community and interest groups. Danielle said that GND campaigned to persuade the government to decarbonise the economy, create secure green jobs and help in the transition of workers to those green jobs, support local communities, restore and protect wild spaces and the natural world. Charles Booth explained how Bullhouse MIll became the first privately owned carbon negative building in the UK. He developed the site around Passivhaus standards with high tech insulation, intelligent lighting, separating hot and cold areas, using less water, recycling to
avoid landfill, installing a huge array of solar electric panels, harnessing energy from the River Don and wind turbines. Heating is by ground based heat pumps and they additionally use biomass. The National Grid caps input so they can’t input any more electricity. They plan on having free Electric Vehicle charging for tenants. Holly Johnston spoke about her work as Lead Organiser for Nurses United and as an Oncology Nursing Sister in Sheffield. She said Nurses United support the GND as it will Build Back Better where we should have a right to say what happens to our services. Free health care is a right and we need to protect the NHS from being sold off. Their work with communities to reduce emissions will also reduce Asthma, lung diseases and improve mental health by protecting green spaces. Electric car use and car sharing with bike use schemes have proved
very popular. Pushing for better organisational practice with input from staff, better pay and union membership will all help to recruit and retain these critical NHS staff. Fran Postlethwaite told us about the Better Buses campaign; the need for a radical change to the existing bus system. Car use in South Yorkshire contributes far more CO2 than the national average with air pollution causing so many deaths. We need ‘green’ buses with zero carbon emissions. Yorkshire has three manufacturers of these buses but Covid meant orders were cancelled and one company’s output goes for export. We needed to expand the fleet of electric buses and where they go; improve access and take up for existing car users. She gave the example of the three hours it currently takes to go by bus from Penistone to Stocksbridge; a ten minute journey by car. This
needs a radical change to how bus travel is funded and operated. Patrick Wakefield from Youth Climate Strikers explained what was happening to the planet through air pollution, extreme weather events, including the related fires in the Peak district. He said we needed to change the way the economy worked as well as addressing all the climate and environmental needs such as the rise in sea level will force millions away from coastal areas around the world in 50 years or less. He highlighted how we needed to act now to meet the challenges of the climate emergency and the role of youth in pushing this on the political agenda because no political party currently wants to do the radical changes needed. He pointed out the daily production of 90 million gallons of oil just kept going with no sign of us reducing use of fossil fuels.
Similarly how the current system has produced 56 people, mostly white men, who own more than half of the world’s population. That was the macro side and on the micro side how the Rolls Royce Barnoldswick site workers had pressed to change from making car engines to making green technology. Other examples he gave were from Spain, agriculture and moving away from a profit motive. Well done Patrick! Four breakout groups discussed topics raised by the speakers before we summarised and thanked the speakers. The event was supported by Penistone and Stocksbridge Constituency Labour Party, Green New Deal, Build Back Better, ACORN Sheffield, Upper Don Renewable Energy Ltd, Bullhouse Mill, Barnsley TUC, Don Valley Railway, Nurses United, Better Buses Campaign and Youth Climate Strikers.

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe and daughter Alice show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities as their father. They are now helping the successful window company build on the 43 years of trading.

POLICE ISSUE ADVICE ON PROTECTING PETS AFTER ATTEMPTED DOG THEFTS Get your walking boots out this half term and go on a bear hunt IT’S nearly half term and with lockdown still in full swing, Windmill Hill Primary school in Chapeltown have come up with something a bit fun for everyone in the community - not just their school - to join in with. They thought it was time for everyone to go on a bear hunt… Nationally there is a Great Big Art exhibition taking place at the moment. The idea is that everyone’s home’s windows become art
galleries where they display creations for people to spot. The first theme, chosen by the artist Antony Gormley, is ‘animals’ which fits right in with bears! This week and continuing over half term, the school is inviting everyone in S35 to take part in a Windmill Hill Bear Hunt. Ali Pape, Teacher and art lead at Windmill Hill, said: “We are asking families to display a bear in their window over half term. This could be a bear you have
made, a teddy bear, or one of our bear templates that you can colour in or decorate. “The idea is to have the bears in place by the first Monday of half term, February 15, so that we can all then go on a bear hunt around our local area and see how many bears we can spot. “If you would like to be involved, all you need to do is put a bear or bears in your window by Monday February 15 and then go on a bear hunt!”

Everyone is welcome to join for an hour of wonderful live music with the fantastic Jessica Mary Brett whilst raising awareness and funds for Weston Park Cancer Charity.
“We would urge anyone who is affected by cancer, to call and speak to the team at Weston Park Cancer Charity. Whether it’s advice from healthcare professionals on symptoms or treatment, knowing what you’re entitled to and applying for welfare benefits, or just wanting someone to talk to, they’re there and ready to listen.
Charlotte Swinhoe, fundraiser for the charity, said: “One in two of us will face cancer at some point in our lives. Directly or indirectly, we can all expect cancer to change everything for us one day, and when it does, Weston Park Cancer Charity is here to change everything too.
“If you or someone you know with cancer needs help, advice or support, they are still here during the Covid-19 outbreak. Just call 0114 553 3330. It’s free, confidential and open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Alternatively you can take a full look at their support services online at www.westonpark.org.uk”
“Its services and advice are for patients and the family and friends close to them, helping everyone affected to live with and beyond cancer. The funds they raise also support vital, pioneering research and clinical trials led by the exceptional medical experts at Weston Park Cancer Centre. The charity aims to care

THERE have been a number of reports of attempted dog thefts in the Stocksbridge and Bolsterstone areas and we want to make sure that our readers are aware of this. Facebook has been awash with reports of attempted thefts and so we’re asking you as a community to be vigilant, especially when out walking your dog. One reader contacted Look Local saying: “Apparently
there is a gang of men trying to steal dogs in Stocksbridge. It seems to be happening daily. They were apparently driving a red van and then a white Volvo. “As you can imagine, it’s a terrible thought for people to feel threatened or in fear of getting attacked and getting their dog stolen. A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: “We know there has been lots in the news about dog theft
recently, especially after so many people have acquired a new family member in lockdown. “Here in South Yorkshire we have sadly seen a rise in reports of thefts over the last few months, especially just before Christmas. “We thought we’d share a couple of tips to read and share with the doggo owners in your life.”

In response to Lisa Banes’ letter in which she besmirches the efforts of the Government, and Department for Education, in providing disadvantaged children with appropriate laptops and IT equipment I would just like to highlight that so far during this pandemic the Department Amey collect reported fly tipping within two days for Education has provided more than 850,000 of being notified, and there is an online reporting laptops and tablets to children across England. system with interactive map, so the location is Cllr Joseph Staniforth easily identified. Fly tipping is a national problem. In response to the Labour Councillor, Andy Bainbridge’s ‘Scheme to make area cleaner’ in Look Local 1151, why are the City Council wasting council taxpayer’s money on issues that everyone is aware of?

Your Letters Bolsterstone Christmas Tree Nursery Bolsterstone Christmas Tree Nursery would like to say a huge thank you to all our customers for their generous donations in support of our chosen charity, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. We raised £345 - almost £100 up on last year, so on behalf of Bluebell Wood, a very big thank you and we wish each and every one of you a belated Happy New Year. Take care and keep safe. She lived at number 50 Florence Buildings and had two children, Roy and Molly, both of whom were older than me.
Hello! I hope you are well? So, January had to be the most depressing January in living memory right? Now, Januarys are always difficult months in a normal year but this year was on another level. No seeing family or friends, no gyms, pubs, non-essential shops, hairdressers and so on. But guess what? We are through it. Now I’ve never been one to wish time away, but I’m pretty sure we are all in the same boat in that we can’t wait for lockdown to end safely. From the publishing off this paper we are only four weeks away from schools resuming, probably eight weeks away from non-essential shops opening and hopefully gyms, pubs and the other things that we have missed will fit in and around those dates, or not too long after. Do not take those dates as facts but that seems to be the general consensus in the mainstream press if things continue as they are doing. So, there is light at the end of all our tunnels. We have been in this situation for nearly

a year now and it has presented us with so much stress, worry, anxiety and changes to our routines. With everything that has gone on and continues to happen it would be no surprise if you are experiencing thoughts of anxiety, worry, fear and uncertainty. That’s why I thought it would be good to cover a simple strategy to help you manage these thoughts. The difference between worrying and anxiety is that worrying tends to be the thoughts of fear that cycle through your mind, whereas anxiety is often the feelings and symptoms that you experience as a result.
Therefore, if we can learn to manage our worries better, then we can help to lessen the impact that anxiety has on our lives, feelings and behaviours. So, a technique we can try to help us manage these worrying thoughts is the alphabet game. The alphabet game is really simple and involves memory recall to distract you from your worrying thoughts. If you find yourself in bed at night overthinking your worries, or at any point in the day, then try this strategy.
First, you need to recognise that you are worrying. Then starting with A, think of a persons name, an animal and a place like a country. For example Alison or Andy, Alligator or Aardvark and Angola or Algeria. Then move on to B, then C and so on. You may have even played this game as a child or as a family. The alphabet game should help to distract you from your worrying thoughts and refocus your attention onto something more fun.
Now, of course, this might not solve the root cause of your worries and anxieties but it is definitely a useful tool to have in your wellbeing toolbox. Also remember to eat healthily, exercise, talk about how you are feeling and if you need to, reach out to your doctor or another professional for support. In the words of D:Ream, “Things can only get better”. Take care and stay positive. Please note: This article is for educational purposes only and should not replace proper medical advice. If you are experiencing anxiety or any other mental health illness then please speak to your doctor.

TIGERS RETAIN JACK HOLDER AFTER SIGNING TROY BATCHELOR
SHEFFIELD have retained Aussie ace Jack Holder for the new season.
Holder was one of the high profile signings for their promotion to the Premiership before last season was cancelled. Now Tigers have confirmed Holder, a wildcard in the Torun Grand Prix weekend last October, will keep his place in the side to form a promising spearhead with new signing Troy Batchelor. Boss Simon Stead said: “I am on record many times saying how much I have been looking forward to working with Jack and I’m delighted we can accommodate him this season. “He’s a class act and has a bright future ahead of him. He’s a Grand Prix rider of the future and the team building is going very nicely so far. “To have three riders of the calibre of Jack, Troy Batchelor and Kyle Howarth confirmed to date is very satisfying.
“Obviously there were concerns he would be unavailable because of the restrictions in Poland on how many other leagues you can race in but he’s committed to Sheffield and I’m delighted. Stead, who recently became a proud Dad, is excited for the new season.
“I’ve consistently said we need to keep the feel good factor of last season going which hasn’t been easy with everything that has been going on in the world, he said. “To lose an entire season is unbelievable but we have to get over it and look forward to what should be a good season. “It will have been a long time since our last meeting when we open up against Belle Vue on May 6, but I’m sure it will be worth it. “That’s a great way for the season to start. I’m pleased to see things starting to get brighter and look forward to seeing the lads back out on track.
