BUSY WEEKEND FOR OFF-ROAD POLICE ON Sunday, South Yorkshire Police’s Off-Road Team covered north Sheffield. A busy day with 77 incidents recorded about bikes and quads being used illegally. A spokesperson for the team said: “The first bike seized today came from Hazelshaw Spring Wood off Penistone Road. A group starburst but one of the riders binned it. “The rider a pro in the sport of enduro had no licence, no insurance and no number plate. The KTM was seized and the rider reported on summons for driving offences. He will probably not get his bike back. “The team then intercepted a group at the Jet petrol station just off Westwood New Road. The group to be fair were good lads. However, several had no plates and were dealt with for this. “One of the riders on his brand new KTM had no licence no insurance and was reported on summons for driving offences. The bike was seized. “The eye in the sky then directed us to Westwood. A group had been picked up entering the wooded area off of Westwood New Road.
“The group was monitored but starburst on seeing officers. One rider was stopped in Westwood. The rider again was a pro in the sport of enduro. His Sherco was seized for no insurance and he was reported for driving offences. “One of the group narrowly escaped onto Westwood New Road past officers but was then tracked with the help of the eye in the sky. The incident lasted about 45 minutes around local estates and Westwood Country Park. “The rider was eventually followed back to an address. He was monitored hiding the bike. Officers then went into an address and arrested the rider for dangerous driving. The Sherco was seized for no insurance. “With it not being road registered he may struggle to get it back. The rider was dealt with for dangerous driving, no insurance and no licence. “The ACU and affiliates are being made aware. This behaviour is bringing the sport into disrepute. Pros in the sport need to be ambassadors not the bad guys.”

Historic Ingbirchworth pub saved in new development proposal But Conroy Brook are confident that the new proposal, saving the Fountain and also providing much needed new housing stock, will meet with the council’s approval. Conroy Brook already has a successful development in the village, the award-winning Summerford development of 13 detached homes. And in the nearby village of Hoylandswaine, Conroy Brook’s Swaine Meadow development of ten four and five bedroom detached homes has proved another success for the company.
THE future of the historic Fountain Inn in the South Yorkshire village of Ingbirchworth, near Penistone, has been assured after the site was bought by Yorkshire property developer Conroy Brook. After years of uncertainty over the future of the once popular bar and restaurant, award-winning Conroy

“We also believe that our architects, Farrar Bamforth Associates, have come up with a development concept that is entirely sympathetic with the surrounding neighbourhood and should prove extremely popular. “From our previous experience in Ingbirchworth and also in the nearby communities of Denby Dale and Stocksmoor, we know that there is a high demand for good quality family homes in these areas. “We are confident that Barnsley Council will see the new life and value we will be bringing to this part of the borough.” Jason Brook, director of both Conroy Brook and Brook Leisure Group, added: “We have a long history of providing quality hospitality venues around Barnsley and beyond - projects as varied as Brooklands Hotel and The Pavilion at Gateway Plaza in Barnsley. “We look forward to bringing a revitalised pub back to life with the support of the local community.”

ROAD OUT OF LOCKDOWN
ON Monday night, the Government laid out a four-step roadmap for how the country will slowly ease out of lockdown restrictions over coming months. The first step of the Government’s plan, from March 8 is as follows: • All schools and colleges will reopen • Wraparound childcare and other supervised children’s activities can resume where they enable parents to work, seek work, attend education, seek medical care or attend a support group • Care home residents will be allowed one regular visitor provided they are tested and wear PPE • The Stay at Home requirement will remain, but people can leave home for recreation outdoors such as a coffee or picnic with their household or support bubble, or with one person outside their household
• Some university students on practical courses will be able to return to face-to-face learning From March 29: • Outdoor gatherings of either 6 people or 2 households will be allowed, providing greater flexibility for families to see each other. This includes in private gardens • Outdoor sports facilities, such as tennis and basketball courts, will be allowed to reopen, and people can take part in formally organised outdoor sports Councillor Bob Johnson, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “Over the past year, people in Sheffield have sacrificed so much and the news of lockdown beginning to gradually ease is something we have all been desperate to hear. “The announcement last night brings with it a lot of hope, showing steady steps on a path back to normality, and it gives us all something to focus on and work towards – light at the end of the tunnel.
“With the news of schools reopening from Monday 8 March, we will be doing all we can to work with them, making sure staff and pupils feel safe to return. Throughout this pandemic, teachers, pupils, parents, carers, and communities have stepped up, adapting to the unknown and providing homeschooling at a moment’s notice - we want this to be the last time that happens. “While I know this is an extremely difficult time for those who were looking for better news, we are heading in the right direction and I’m confident that if we follow the guidelines, we will start to see further easing of restrictions and our much-loved city getting back on its feet. “Sheffield does not want to see another lockdown. We want to see our communities and businesses thriving, our theatres reopening their doors, events planned, and our streets and parks filled with people meeting up with their friends and
family once again. But we are not there yet. We must make sure we are cautious and follow the guidance in place to make sure we beat this virus once and for all. I for one cannot wait for that to happen.” Greg Fell, Director of Public Health Sheffield, said: “This is a much more cautious plan than we’ve seen before, and one I think is good for Sheffield residents. “We hit a point in Sheffield where our hospitals were increasingly overcrowded, our infection rate was high, and we had to act. Throughout lockdown, our admissions rate has started to decrease as well as transmission levels, however, we must do all we can to keep this up, making sure we don’t take one step forward and two steps back. “We are all desperate to come out of lockdown and gradually get back to normality, but we must remember to be cautious to prevent figures climbing in our region. While vaccination coverage is high and there are signs this is beginning to reduce
hospitalisation in the elderly, there are still many younger adults who are harmed by Covid-19. “What we’ve seen over the past three to six months are different variants, and that is what we must keep under control to allow us to ease lockdown restrictions further and get us on the road to recovery. “A big thank you from me to everyone for what they have done throughout the countries third lockdown, this has not been easy, but the intention of this lockdown was to reduce admissions and the rate of infection and while this has happened, we mustn’t take our foot off the gas now. “There is one clear message that remains the same; please continue to wash your hands, wear a mask and keep your distance from people outside of your household. Please get a test if you have symptoms. We must continue with our efforts to reduce the spread of the virus.”

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe and daughter Alice show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities as their father. They are now helping the successful window company build on the 43 years of trading.

Stocksbridge swimmers poised to return to the pool…again!
AFTER almost a year of Covid-19 restrictions and stop-start training, swimmers from Stocksbridge Pentaqua Swimming Club are ready and waiting to return to the pool again, as soon as the third national lockdown is lifted. Despite a challenging year, however, the club has enjoyed lots of positives that swimmers, the committee, and the coaching team can be proud of. The club were one of the first to return to the pool last August after the first national lockdown. Thanks to many hours of hard work by the committee and coaches put-
ting together Covid-secure plans and procedures, plus the support of Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre and Hoyland Leisure Centre, Stocksbridge swimmers were quickly back to training when restrictions allowed. Swimmers took the new procedures in their stride and enjoyed being back in the water. Soon after the club’s return, Swim England announced the young swimmers selected for their National Development Programme. Stockbridge swimmer Logan P was one of the talented 13 and 14-yearolds invited to attend a learning
and engagement day, which this year was held online due to Covid19 restrictions.
The pilot event was a huge success with Stocksbridge swimmers relishing the chance to race once again.
With many more clubs getting back to training but galas not able to go ahead, in September Swim England announced their virtual swimming competition, Level X, which would give swimmers the opportunity to compete with others from across the country within the comforts of their own club training sessions.
Commenting on a challenging but successful 12-months, Stocksbridge Pentaqua Swimming Club’s Head Coach, David Wright said: “I am hugely proud of what our swimmers and the club has achieved over the last year despite ongoing restrictions. Everyone has worked extremely hard to implement the necessary procedures and our swimmers have acclimatised to them brilliantly.
Stocksbridge Pentaqua Swimming Club were thrilled to be one of only eleven clubs selected to pilot the event ahead of the official launch.
“Although training routines have had to be adapted to conform to
current guidelines, swimmers have still been able to train at a high level and work on both their stamina and technique, which showed in their fantastic Level X racing results. “We hope to be able to return to training as soon as restrictions allow, and we look forward to seeing all our swimmers back in the water.” Anyone interested in joining Stocksbridge Pentaqua Swimming Club when restrictions lift and capacity limits allow, can register their interest via the club’s website - https:// www.stocksbridgepentaqua.co.uk/
Census 2021 – Ensuring the big decisions are made on the best information CENSUS 2021 will be key to making sure the big decisions on the future of our hospitals, schools, transport and other public services, following the pandemic and EU exit, are based on the best information possible. Run by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the census – taking place on March 21 - is the once-in-a-decade survey that gives the most accurate estimate of all people and households in England and Wales. The digital-first census will not only provide a fresh picture of the size of all communities, it will also shed light on the health, social and economic changes to our lives. “After years of planning, the census is almost upon us,” census director of operations Pete Benton said. “In the coming days and weeks you will be hearing more and more about
why the census is so important, why you must take part and, crucially, how you can take part. Every household will soon receive a postcard, explaining what a census is, and in early March letters will arrive in the post inviting people to take part in the digital-first census. “In light of the coronavirus pandemic, we need this up-to-date information to help shape vital services for the years to come more urgently than ever before and we are making sure everyone can be safely counted in line with all government guidance. “We have made it simple, straightforward and safe to take part. It takes just 10 minutes per person to fill out your form and if you can’t get online, there are paper forms available for those who need them, as well as lots of support. Now is the time to make your mark on history.”
Running the census in times of a pandemic has naturally thrown up some challenges and the ONS’ focus is ensuring the safety of the public. “We want everyone to be safely counted and we’re making sure our plans are always in line with the latest government guidelines,” Pete said. “Census field officers will only follow up with households after Census Day on March 21 if householders have not yet completed their questionnaire. They will never enter a household, they will always be socially distanced, be equipped with PPE and work in line with all government guidance.” Some questions also have updated guidance to reflect our changed living and working circumstances.
Pete added: “For those on furlough, we have updated guidance on how to answer questions on work. All students need to be included in the census, and they should complete it for their usual term-time address. If they’re currently living at their home address, they will need to be included in the census for that household too.” For the first time, there will be a question asking people whether they have served in the armed forces, as well as voluntary questions for those aged 16 and over on sexual orientation and gender identity. First results will be available within 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years, kept safe for future generations. For more information, visit census.gov.uk.

Lidl to progress new food store in Chapeltown as detailed plans are submitted PROPERTY developers Morbaine Limited and Ackroyd & Abbott have submitted detailed plans to Sheffield City Council to construct a new Lidl food store off Lane End in Chapeltown, following the granting of outline planning permission by the authority last year. Sheffield City Council acknowledged that the proposed development would have a positive impact locally by redeveloping a long-standing vacant site, increasing shopping choice, improving access to main food shopping facilities by foot and creating new job opportunities for local people. Since outline planning permission was secured, Morbaine has worked in partnership with Lidl to design a store that not only meets their needs but also importantly seeks to minimise any impact on neighbouring residential properties. This has involved the introduction of specialist acoustic fencing and the introduction of dense landscaped areas to create a natural buffer between the store and local residents. At the rear of the store a new woodland area will be created which means that the building would be more than 10 metres away from the boundary of any existing property on Thorncliffe View. This area will be fenced off from the public and will be allowed to mature and become a natural woodland with significant Keith Nutter, Director at Morbaine, said: ecological benefits. “When we launched our plans back in April The proposal also includes direct pedestrian 2019, we discussed the proposals with local access off Thorncliffe Lane as well as a new pe- people including those residents who live destrian crossing on Lane End to ensure that next to the site. the new store will be accessible to all and en“Having listened to their concerns, we have courage journeys to be made on foot. spent significant time and resources planning The development of eight detached dwellings the layout of the site to arrive at a scheme will complete the residential street scene on which we believe delivers maximum enviThorncliffe View, which now forms part of a ronmental benefits and minimises any future new separate detailed application. impact on local residents. for the local community whilst delivering our range of high quality and affordable produce. “Our plans are set to create around 35 jobs, which would be fantastic for the local area and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support so far.” The Planning Application can be viewed in full on the Sheffield City Council website at, Search, view & comment on planning applications (sheffield.gov.uk) under reference number 21/00497/FUL.
Toddlers enjoy Pancake Day as supermarket invites applications for support scheme TODDLERS have enjoyed celebrating Pancake Day, thanks to a Sheffield supermarket. Jack’s Supermarket, on Kilner Way, kindly donated a hamper of pancake ingredients and toppings to Riverview Day Nursery and Little Imp Nursery on Hawksley Avenue in Hillsborough. Daniel Saragea, Store Manager of Jack’s Sheffield, said: “Here at Jack’s the local community is so important to us, especially the smallest members. We hope the children at Riverview Day Nursery and Little Imp Nursery enjoy tasting the delicious pancakes and learning all about Pancake Day.” Abbey Hayes from Little Imp Nursery said: “We have had a fantastic Pancake Day. The children have loved mixing the batter and spreading some of their favourite toppings! Thank you so much
to Jack’s on Kilner Way for their fabulous donations. We feel extremely grateful for your generosity during these awful times! Safe to say these yummy treats have helped.” Jack’s is appealing for charities and organisations to be part of its Jack’s Supports scheme for the chance of receiving a free cash donation. The deadline for this round of applications is Sunday February 28, so any charities that would like to be included in the next round of the scheme need to apply now. Four successful organisations will each receive £500 to help them through this tough time. Usually, the four nominees would each get £250, and voting units would be placed in store where shoppers could nominate one charity to receive an extra £250. However, the
funding has been increased to offer more support to local charities whose usual fundraising efforts may have been impacted by the pandemic. Following the last round of the scheme, Jack’s donated £400 to each charity that had applied as a way of supporting them after a very difficult year. This included 68 community groups in total, which is worth over £27,000 in donations! Daniel Saragea, Store Manager at Jack’s Sheffield, said: “We launched Jack’s Supports to give something back to the local communities that have supported us since our launch. As charity fundraising has been massively affected by the current situation, we were delighted that our last round of the Jack’s Supports scheme en-
abled us to offer support to more organisations than ever before. “There are so many wonderful charities and organisations in Sheffield that we would love to support, which is why we’re urging people to come forward and apply before the deadline to be in with a chance of receiving this cash donation.” Caitlin Holland from Little Art Heroes received a £400 cash donation in December and said: “We support young asylum seekers and refugees through creative and community building activities. Thank you to Jack’s Supports for your generosity, with your help we can continue to do this.” To nominate a worthy cause, go to https://jackssupports.org.uk/ and complete an application form by the deadline: Sunday February 28.

One step at a time for young fundraiser Frances AT the age of just eight, young fundraiser Frances O’Neill is tackling the problem of youth homelessness one step at a time. She set herself a challenge of walking one mile per day for ten days in a bid to raise money for South Yorkshire charity Roundabout. And although she started with a modest fundraising target of just £100, by the time the Oughtibridge Primary School pupil had completed her first five days she had already raised a fantastic £835! “It all started because Frances has been working towards a
Brownie Badge about having an impact on your community,” said mum Jess.
“We are unbelievably proud of her and everything she is achieving for Roundabout.”
“Brown Owl asked the girls to think about the charities they would like to support and Frances decided she would like to support children and the homeless.
Roundabout Fundraising and Communications Manager Helen Mower commented: “Frances is a brilliant example to us all and proof that there’s no such thing as too young to achieve great things.
“She couldn’t believe that children could actually be homeless so when she saw the Roundabout website she knew it was the right one to support. “She decided she would walk a mile a day for ten days and she’s been overwhelmed by the response.
“We too are very proud of everything Frances is achieving and she can be assured that her fantastic efforts will have a direct impact on the work we are doing with vulnerable young people throughout South Yorkshire.”

Your Letters Hollin Busk Inquiry Dear Editor, I, like many other people in Deepcar and Stocksbridge, have received a letter from Sheffield City Council regarding the appeal and proposed inquiry into the refusal to grant planning permission for the building of 85 houses on the land at Hollin Busk Lane. The application has been rejected, voting 12-1 against by the SCC Planning Committee. This proposal was also strongly objected to by our Stocksbridge local and city councillors and local MP, together with over 500 local objectors. My own objection to the development, when first proposed, was the impact on traffic and safety on Carr Road, especially in view of the 400 houses, Bloor Homes development at the bottom of Deepcar and the inevitable chaos that will be caused on Carr Road in the school run. This project from so many other angles, as well as Sheffield City Council’s, is unsustainable.

Improvement plans for Stannington Park Playground

The wildlife garden: tips for early spring
SPRING is always an exciting time for gardeners but this year you may want to make your garden more friendly for wildlife. Even small changes can make a difference. Here are a few tips! • Plant trees, shrubs and hedges in milder weather; leave last year’s seed heads as food for birds and don’t cut back last year’s vegetation until new growth has begun. IMPROVEMENTS will be made at Stannington park to address drainage issues and provide new play equipment, following the recent bouts of bad weather which have left the ground in poor conditions for play. The exceptionally wet weather over the winter period has caused water logging issues at the park, with the play area becoming very muddy, and a number of local parents have raised concerns about this. This issue has come at a time when the city’s parks and green spaces are being used more than ever as a consequence of Covid19 restrictions. The Parks and Countryside Team are aware of the water logging issues and have been developing plans for drainage and playground improvements. Options to improve the drainage in the playground are being drawn up, but for this to be successful, it is im-
portant that’s it’s carried out at the right time. The work needs to be completed when the ground has dried out and when it will cause least disturbance to children and families. Therefore, bosses will be aiming for the improvement works to be delivered later this year following the school summer holidays, and before the colder and possibly wetter autumn weather begins. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet member for Culture, Parks and Leisure said: “Stannington park provides a wonderful space for play and exercise for many local people and families, particularly as we have seen such an increase in use of parks’ facilities during the pandemic. Increased use and the bad weather has presented lots of challenges in our parks and I understand the frustrations of local parents who want to use this playground and cannot.
“We’ve listened to those concerns and now have a plan in place to improve this much-loved playground for local children and families, which will enable everyone access throughout the year. “We want to make the most of this opportunity and will include the renewal of some of the older items of play equipment, which will meet the needs of more families and ensure Stannington Park playground remains a great place to visit.” Once drawn up, the options to improve the playground will be shared with local people for comment and feedback. For more information contact the council’s Parks and Countryside service at parksandcountryside@sheffield.gov.uk or call 0114 2500 500. Follow on social media @parksheffield on Twitter & Instagram, or @ sheffieldparks on FB https://www. facebook.com/sheffieldparks
• Spread bark and compost around shrubs and trees. It creates a home for insects and improves the soil. • Make a pond or wetland area to encourage pond life such as frogs, toads and dragon flies. • Put up nest boxes. Don’t despair if birds do not use them this year as they will be an investment for the future. • If hedges need trimming do it as soon as you can: after the birds have eaten the berries and before the nesting season gets into full swing in March. • Leave healthy herbaceous and hollow stemmed plants un-pruned as these can provide homes for over-wintering insects. • Be careful digging into compost heaps; they can be warm and a winter home for hedgehogs, frogs, toads, and other animals. • Consider turning some or all of your lawn into a wildflower meadow. • When buying seeds look for the bee friendly logo on the packets. • Enlarge your wildlife garden by going vertical; can you create a green wall or green roof or plant climbers up trellises or fences? Our thanks to the RSPB (www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/advice/gardening-for-wildlife/ ) and RHS (www.rhs.org.uk/advice/ wildlife-garden) for their information. Upper Don Tree Charter Branch
SCAM ALERT: National Insurance scam SOUTH Yorkshire Police’s fraud co-ordination team has issued a warning to local residents about a national insurance scam. A number of people in South Yorkshire have been called by scammers suggesting that there is a balance outstanding connected to their National Insurance number, or that their National Insurance number has been used fraudulently. In both instances, the caller asks victims to confirm their National Insurance number, bank details and sometimes their passport number.
Further calls are then made, with scammers pretending to be from the police, stating that a warrant is out for their arrest and they’ll need to attend a police station unless they pay. PC Vicki Arrowsmith, from the force’s fraud co-ordination team, said: “We know that thankfully, many people will treat calls like this with suspicion - but it’s still vitally important that everyone spreads the word about scams like this, and makes sure their loved
ones know how to spot the signs and keep themselves safe.
never ask you to reveal your bank details or personal information on a call like this.”
“Elderly and vulnerable relatives and neighbours could fall victim to these types of scams, and fraudsters may take advantage of people’s struggles during the Coronavirus pandemic – especially that many people are anxious and isolated.
If you think you have been a victim of this scam, report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or go online to actionfraud.police.uk.
“Please be vigilant and remember that no matter how sincere the caller seems, they will

Rugby club looks to help charity AS Stocksbridge Rugby Club waits to see what the future holds for this season or next, the first team playing squad have decided to help raise some money for a deserving cause and keep their fitness levels up. Oliver Sinclair played at the club throughout the successful Colts era and many of his team mates and colleagues form the back bone of the current first team. Sadly, Oli passed away last year and his family and friends have set up the ‘Oliver’s Army’ charity in his memory to aid mental health awareness. “Oli was a great guy,” said Adam Frith. “He was a popular member of our team and a pretty good player too. So it is nice to be able to do some good in his memory.” Many of his former team mates are signing up to the Run Nation Virtual Ultra, Hadrian’s Wall challenge 2021, where they will ‘virtually’ run the equivalent of 85 miles before the end of April to raise funds for the charity and help the club too. Former club supremo Rhys Keenan said: “It’s for good causes, it will help keep the lads together and I‘m looking forward to getting my training gear on and getting involved in this very worthwhile initiative.” Further details on how to support the run or to donate will be made public in due course.
