Sheffield’s ‘legendary’ last little mester has died at the age of 94. Stan Shaw was awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list in 2017 for his services to manufacturing in the city.
Stan started making knives in 1939 at the age of just 14, still spending nine hours on the bench in his 90s. Sam’s family didn’t have a cutlery background, but on a trip to Sheffield he saw pocket knives for sale in the market and decided that’s what he wanted to do. Stan, who was born in Worrall, had a problem with his hip as a child that meant he had to spend a lot of time in hospital and
so he received a very limited education. But since starting his apprenticeship all those years ago, he had gone on to become one of the most respected knife-makers in the world. As well as presenting the Queen with a knife in the late 80s, George Bush Senior and Elvis Presley’s pianist, Glenn Hardin, have also added his knives to their collections. In fact, Hardin has over 50.
In 2017, he was awarded the British Empire Medal for meritorious service worthy of recognition by the crown- it was first time such an award had been bestowed on a member of the cutlery trade. Stan lived in Deepcar with his wife Rosemary, who handled the books for his business, for 50 years. Mr Shaw had a four yearlong order book, but was forced to stop working in 2019 due to ill health.

Campaign Saves Deepcar Greenfield Site Campaigners are celebrating after they convinced Sheffield City Council to throw out a developer's plans to build over 40 homes on fields bordering Wood Royd Road in Deepcar. More than 100 local residents came together to oppose the planning application, and formed a residents’ group to lead this opposition, supported by local city councillor Francyne Johnson, local Labour campaigner Lisa Banes, and Stocksbridge Town Council. Adding weight to their stand were objections from the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England and Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust. Cllr Julie Grocutt also supported the residents’ group.
The campaign was against the development of housing over the five fields, which would have deprived Deepcar of yet another green space, creating extra traffic on already congested roads and potentially increasing the threat of flooding in the immediate area, which has become a regular nightmare for local residents. Town councillor Mark Whittaker, who has been active in the campaign, said: “The rejection of this development means that a green corridor is
preserved between Deepcar and Stocksbridge, rather than there just being a continuous urban sprawl, and that's what the campaign picked up from so many of the residents we spoke with. It shows what all of us working together can achieve." Before refusing the application, members of the the city council's planning board voiced their concerns over the plan, saying the site earmarked for development should instead be classed as green belt and the devel-
opment of brownfield sites should take priority, a feeling echoed by active campaigner Lisa Banes. She said: “The importance of local green spaces cannot be overstated. They are a vital part of our community, a haven for wildlife, and must be protected. Local residents did a fantastic job leading the opposition to this development, and I am pleased that the planning committee made the right decision in turning this application down.”
Hidden stories in local graveyards Bolsterstone Archaeology and Heritage Group’s will be looking into hidden stories to be found in graveyards at their next virtual meeting. Discovering England's Burial Spaces: How graveyard monuments reveal hidden stories, will be include Prof. Harold Mytum (University of Liverpool) and Dr Toby Pillatt (University of York). Discussing how graveyard research allows us to understand more about the past. They will look at the ways individual stone carvers can be identified, how you can notice regional styles, how shapes and materials used for memorials change in popularity over time, and how some of the designs on
stones carry meaning. They will also introduce a new archaeological recording system and online database that will help standardise burial ground surveys and provide access to the results, enabling studies that look at how commemoration has changed over time and in different parts of the country. Often graveyard recording captures only the words on the stones - this will be a great introduction to studying the stones themselves for their historic, economic and artistic value. The talk on zoom will be on Wednesday 17 March, starting at 7.30pm. Please contact bahgevent@ axelafa.com for joining details.

NEIGHBOURHOODS: High Green is blooming again thanks to local policing team A group of volunteers who are responsible for keeping High Green’s parks looking bright and beautiful have been reunited with stolen gardening equipment thanks to the local neighbourhood team. On 13 January, a storage container used by High Green in Bloom was broken into by thieves, who stole tools and other equipment. It was a blow for the group, who have guardianship of Mortomley Park and work all year round to keep the area looking neat and tidy whilst also carrying out litter picks across High Green. After various enquiries by the local neighbourhood team, officers recovered some of the stolen items at an address just several weeks later and last week
Final curtain falls on Endellion Theatre Company The curtain has fallen for the final time on one of the region’s most popular theatre companies. Endellion Theatre Company, based in Thurlstone, near Penistone, brought together some of the finest non-professional singing and acting talent in the north. Under the direction of Jonathan Walker-Kane, the company enjoyed a string of acclaimed shows including A Man For All Seasons at Sheffield Cathedral and The Boyfriend, South Pacific, Follies, A Little Night Music, Shirley Valentine, The King and I and Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads at Buxton Opera House. Jonathan directed Endellion’s acclaimed revival of musical classic Oliver at the Church of St Giles in the Field in London’s West End and brought Holocaust drama Taken at
Midnight to Penistone Parish Church. There were also productions of Man of La Mancha at Leeds City Varieties and Tell Me on a Sunday, Arcadia, The Deep Blue Sea, Salad Days and Evita at Theatre Impromptu, the specially converted St Saviour’s Church in Thurlstone. For other companies, Jonathan also directed successful revivals of Fiddler on the Roof and Jesus Christ Superstar at Sheffield’s Lyceum. Endellion’s last production, a lavish revival of My Fair Lady, was brought to a halt by the COVID-19 pandemic just days before opening night. And now it has been confirmed that Endellion Theatre Company will not be returning. “Our primary sponsor has been very badly affected by
Brexit to the point where it is no longer viable to support the company,” Jonathan explained. “Finding another sponsor in the current economic climate is impossible so it is with great sadness that the company is ceasing to perform. “Endellion Theatre Company has been a fantastic platform for some of the north’s finest actors and singers and I am proud of the great range of work we have produced. “Out thanks too to our audiences who have supported us at all our venues and appreciated the great choice of drama we brought to Yorkshire and Derbyshire.”
they paid a visit to the volunteers to return the goods! Sergeant Matt Cook from the High Green policing team said: “High Green in Bloom do such a fantastic job of keeping community spirit going in this area, so we were really frustrated to hear they had been targeted by thieves. “Some great work by my team meant we tracked down some of the missing equipment at a property in High Green not long after it was taken. Two people were also arrested and have been released under investigation whilst we complete a few more enquiries. “We wanted to do something nice for the volunteers, so we dropped by to return the equipment and a bunch of flowers to say thank you for their hard work.”

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe and daughter Alice show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities as their father. They are now helping the successful window company build on the 43 years of trading.

I would love to put on "the party we all deserve" Timm Cleasby from Tramlines festival was speaking after organisers of Reading and Leeds said they were "very confident" of their events going ahead. The organiser of a Sheffield music festival has said he would love to put on “the party we all deserve”, if restrictions ease in time for summer. Under the government's plan, limits on social contact in England could be gone by 21 June. That would mean many outdoor events could go ahead, including Camp Bestival and Creamfields, which plan to stage their 2021 editions. Some festival organisers have echoed Conservative MP Julian Knight's calls for the government to offer cancellation insurance. Mr Knight, chair of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee, has asked Chancel-
lor Rishi Sunak to announce extra support for festivals in this week's budget. Mr Cleasby said the measure "would be a massive step in the right direction, because getting cancellation insurance is virtually impossible." He said his first priority would be the safety of festival-goers and staff, adding: "We don't want to do anything that puts anybody at risk, whether there is a pandemic or not. "We would love it to be going ahead and to be the party that we all deserve, but we will just have to wait and see," he said. Tramlines is scheduled to take place from 23 to 25 July at Hillsborough Park.
Urgent plea over ‘Household recycling centres’
Sheffield City Council are urging visitors to its Household recycling centres to respect staff and stick to the Covid-19 measures in place, for safety and to prevent further delays and closures at sites.
“We are incredibly proud that we’ve been able to keep our five Household Waste Recycling Centres open across Sheffield during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The hard work and commitment from our workforce during this difficult time has enabled us to do this.
Unfortunately, despite working tirelessly to ensure that residents are kept safe when using the sites, there has been a number of recent incidents where people visiting the sites have threatened and verbally abused staff members.”
We would encourage residents with significant volumes of DIY waste and garden waste to consider contacting a registered skip hire company. Residents can arrange for collections to take place from their home for both garden waste and bulky waste. Whilst sites are currently open, the safety of the public and staff
is paramount, and if large numbers of people visit the sites or fail to follow the guidelines, they will be forced to close.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can Birthdays repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Mother’s Day 2020 was the day before the first UK lockdown started. Can you believe it?
cafe right now) is to invite your Mum downstairs to experience breakfast at your home cafe.
Here we are a year later and we find ourselves still in lockdown, however, there are still plenty of fun ways to celebrate Mother’s Day 2021.
Leave them to have a lie-in, deliver their book to them with a cup of tea (and a biscuit if they are hungry already) and then have them come downstairs to a gorgeous Mother’s Day lockdown breakfast. Whether it’s a full English breakfast, avocado and smoked salmon on toast, fresh croissants or pastries, or a stack of delectable pancakes, get preparing your mum’s favourite brunch dishes for a wonderful Mother’s Day morning at home. If you and your mum enjoy a cocktail, you could even make some mimosas mum-osas together!
1. Bring your Mum breakfast in bed. Let your mum have that welldeserved lie in and bring her breakfast in bed! Show that you care, listen to and appreciate your mum on Mother’s Day 2021 by preparing her favourite breakfast or something that she wouldn’t normally have time to make, and take it upstairs so they can continue to stay cosy and start off the day on a really good foot! 2. Have a brunch date together. Another breakfast or brunch option (seeing as you can’t take them to their favourite local
Create a handwritten menu, decorate the ‘cafe’ with handmade decorations and flowers, and leave a note to tell her how much you appreciate her this Mother’s Day. If you have siblings who can’t get home because of lockdown, they could join your breakfast cafe via Zoom (or another video call-
ing option), and if you can’t be at home this Mother’s Day, you could get breakfast delivered to your mum from a local cafe! 3. Flowers! I know it’s obvious, but most people love receiving flowers, and mothers are no exception to this! Take this opportunity to pop to a florist or a supermarket, pick up your mum’s favourite combination of flowers and colours, and brighten up her living space. If you want something that will last a little longer than flowers, consider buying a house plant or her favourite rose bush for the garden. If your mum loves flower arranging, why not book a virtual flower arranging class together? You might not be able to get together in real life this Mother’s Day, but Mother’s Day in lockdown can still be full of fun and love! Get creative and play with the petals, colours and textures together
to create a completely unique Mother’s Day bouquet. 4. Create a hamper of your mum's favourite things. You could buy a wicker basket or hamper and fill it with all your Mum’s favourite things: treats such as chocolates or wine, things for her to do, make or read, smellies for the bath and body, candles, teas or coffee, or little handmade gifts or notes from you. There are also plenty of pre-made hampers that you could get delivered to her door on Mother’s Day! 5.Get some fresh air on a walk, hike or bike ride. Depending on where you’re doing your Mother’s Day lockdown, this is a great way to get outside and change up the scenery whilst doing something for Mother’s Day. Take a coffee on a morning walk with your mum, or if your local restrictions allow you to do so, get active in the fresh air with a day hike or a bike ride.

Health Care homes in Sheffield have been recognised at the Royal Television Society Awards. Sky’s coverage of the pandemic was described by judges as a “must watch during these difficult times” and had included reportage that had “offered insight into the lives of ordinary people”.
Judges said that he had “brought to life the human dramas” in his moving accounts of people in care homes, and their family struggles, through this difficult year, but crucially, he had also “held politicians to account”.
The reports led to journalist Nick Martin winning the coveted specialist journalist of the year prize.
In his speech to the Awards, Nick Martin said:
“We couldn’t have told this story without Nicola Richards who right at the start of the pandemic knew that something wasn’t right. She had the courage to let us tell the story. Her and the staff fought so hard to keep residents alive.”
OPEN FOR TAKEAWAYS 5.30-10PM 7 DAYS A WEEK Seating for up to 60 Booking advised Parties Welcome
The news comes after Palms Row director, Nicola Richards, was commended for speaking out with a nomination at the Covid Comms Awards. Nicola Richards commented: “The care sector across the country recognises that Nick Martin’s reports on the crisis facing our care homes forced the government to act and take our sector seriously. “One lasting legacy from the crisis will hopefully see local and national governments no longer treat care homes as the Cinderella sector.”

Decent price paid Tel: 0114 to race a full league season. 2456562 The fixture list for both pro-
fessional leagues was put together with the possibility of a later start than May 3 and the fortnight delay makes little difference. Club co-promoter Damien Bates said: “This news is what everyone has been hoping for and it looks like we are going to see the return of racing to Owlerton Stadium. “It’s always been of paramount importance for speed-
way tracks to reopen this summer and we have been hopeful because of the general improvement in the situation around the country.
for warm, sunny evenings watching our team race against the likes of Belle Vue, it will be so good to renew that rivalry.
“The success of the vaccine rollout has been good to see and I know how important it will be for all our supporters to get back to seeing their team in action.
“We’ll start casting an eye towards press and practice arrangements and perhaps a pre-season meet the riders night, but for now we just have to sit tight throughout March and ensure things keep heading in the right direction.
“Sport is so important for people’s mental health. January and February were always going to be tough for people with freezing weather and lockdown and there’s still some more patience needed throughout March, but we are heading in the right direction. “There’s so much to look forward to for our supporters now. Personally I can’t wait
“We’ve still got work to do on the team building front and we are still talking to riders as we look to finalise the side.” Tigers have so far named Troy Batchelor, Jack Holder, Kyle Howarth and Josh Bates in their side with three more to be confirmed.

Season ended for local non-league football Premier Division have received the same news for their division.
Stocksbridge Park Steels Chairman issued the following statement: “…Obviously we are all disappointed that another season has been cut short ,but it is important to remember the bigger picture with the loss of lives, and the number of businesses that this awful pandemic has impacted on.
Local non-league grassroots football will see no more ‘action’ for this season after the FA confirmed steps 3 – 6 of the National League System should be curtailed with immediate effect.
to the approval of FA Council, the 2020-21 league season for Steps 3-6 of the NLS should be curtailed with immediate effect, with no further league matches taking place this season.’
The FA issued the following statement to clubs last week
This means a premature end to the season for two of our regions top non-league outfits.
‘Taking into account the survey results and the ongoing impact of Covid-19, which continues to adversely affect incomes for clubs due to restrictions on both spectators and hospitality, The FA’s Alliance and Leagues Committees have reached a consensus that subject
I would like to thank all our volunteers, sponsors, advertisers, supporters, players and management throughout the club for the tremendous effort they all played in getting the season started from July to October.
Stocksbridge Park Steels, where it all began for Jamie Vardy have had their NPL South/East Division null and voided.
Looking towards the future I can assure you we will working tirelessly in the coming months, to make sure we are ready for the start of the new season, and hopefully our partnership with our sponsors Eco-Power Environmental Ltd will ensure an bright future for the club and supporters alike
Likewise, Penistone Church FC, who were going so well in the NCEL
We are aware that our ever increasing number of season ticket hold-
ers, failed to get value for money, as few games were actually played, so with that in mind all tickets purchased this season will be valid for season 2021-22.
I would like to thank you all for your patience and understanding this season and we look forward to seeing you all again soon at the Eco-Power Environmental Stadium, home of The Steels We will keep you updated regarding pre - season arrangements as lockdown starts to ease.” Graham Furness, Chairman NCEL Premier Division side Penistone Church issued the following statement to its supporters “Our absolute focus as a club in the immediate future will be to ensure the safe return of junior football and supporting managers, players and parents to do this safely. After that we’ll hope to get the men’s teams and the clubhouse open again. As Boris and the government have done, we’ll do all of this slowly and carefully to ensure we don’t fall
foul of any rules we find we need to follow. With regards to the men’s teams we’ve had thoughts about an end of season friendly tournament, or we’ll see if the NCEL or SHCFA resurrect either of the cup competitions. Until we know any more on this then ‘bare with us’. One last point and thanks is to all of the fans and community for continuing to support the club over the last 12 months. We all feel like we’re on the path to normality again so let’s hope it goes to plan. We now have a record number of season ticket holders who for your hard earned cash got three home games in the 2020/21 season! So to keep things simple - all season tickets will simply transfer to the 2021/22 season at no extra cost to anyone. So thank you to everyone again, keep in touch via social media and we hope to see you all very soon.”
