Steel in Stocksbridge under threat Thousands of jobs in Britain’s steel industry are thought to be at risk after the biggest lender to Liberty Steel, Greensill, went into administration
Union officials held crisis talks with owners on Tuesday. Liberty owns 12 steel plants in the UK including in Rotherham, Motherwell, Stocksbridge, Newport and Hartlepool. ‘But one site in particular, a factory that makes aerospace parts in Stocksbridge, South Yorkshire, could become the first victim of cuts after the pandemic hammered demand for its products. With the downturn in the aerospace industry, it is not clear if any buyers would be keen to snap up the Stocksbridge plant, which employs 762 people. Writes “Thisismoney.co.uk”’
“The joint administrators are in continued discussion with an interested party in relation to the purchase of certain Greensill Capital assets. As these discussions remain ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time,” the spokesperson added. Liberty Steel is the UK’s third-largest steelmaker, employing 3,000 people at 11 sites. Another 2,000 people in engineering businesses within the group are also involved. That’s a substantial chunk of the 32,000 people who work in the industry.
Employment and output have fallen significantly for the steel industry over the last four decades. In its heyday as the state-owned British Steel Corporation in the early 1970s, it had 10 times as many workers. The whole UK steel industry has gone through a chequered period of ownership since it was privatised in the 1980s. However, the sector is still considered important by government ministers, regional politicians and business leaders. Continued on Page 2

STOCKSBRIDGE STEEL OF NATIONAL IMPORTANCE
Continued from Page 1
jobs provided by Speciality Steels are highly valuable to our community and I understand that this is an uncertain time for employees and their families, many of whom live in the Penistone and Stocksbridge constituency. This morning I spoke to the local Community Union representative to hear employees’ concerns, and I continue to offer them my full support…
I am continuing to advocate that, regardless of the challenges Liberty is facing, Stocksbridge Speciality Steels is an asset of national importance and it has unique capabilities to produce the materials we need now and in the future. Local MP Miriam Cates told Look Local ‘..we must retain and invest in the UK steel industry and I believe that Stocksbridge Speciality Steels has an important role to play in this… . Last week I had a meeting with Kwasi Kwarteng, Secretary of State for Business, who assured me that the Government is closely engaged in the situation, and I will be meeting him again tomorrow… The
I firmly believe that steel is not just an important part of the history of Stocksbridge, it should also be a vital part of our future and I will continue to work closely with management and the Government to do whatever is possible to help secure a strong and profitable future for Stocksbridge Speciality Steels.’

Woman jailed for seven years following violent attack A Sheffield woman who slashed another woman’s face in a violent attack last December has been jailed for seven years.
a brutal assault. Hitting her victim in the face and slashing her with a penknife and leaving a huge wound on the side of her head.
Emma Capper, 37, forced her way into a flat on Victoria Street at around 9pm on 9 December, where her victim was visiting friends.
"The victim's friends watched horrified as they raised the alarm with the building’s security guard and called an ambulance.”
Capper, 37 of Staindrop Lodge Hotel, Sheffield pleaded guilty to the charges at a hearing on 13 January 2021 and was sentenced to seven years in prison at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday (5 March).
Capper was identified on CCTV and was arrested several days later by officers after extensive enquiries.
Detective Constable Helen Critchley, investigating, said: “Capper knew her victim was at the address that day when she barged her way in and launched
DC Critchley added: "Capper was known to her victim through mutual friends, but there was no apparent catalyst for the attack that night. In police interviews, Capper accused her victim of stealing her phone
and claimed that her victim had started the fight. “Evidence from witnesses and our enquiries did not support these claims and Capper was charged with wounding with intent and remanded into custody.” DC Critchley said: “Capper is a violent and nasty individual who left her victim with significant facial injuries that night. I hope that this substantial custodial sentence is reassuring to the victim and the wider community."

The value of advice You work hard to support your family and enjoy life – so why not seek expert advice to ensure your wealth is being managed effectively?
L
ife is busy – often complicated. Families become fragmented; demands on our time increase. You’d think that advances in technology, communications and media would make life easier, but that’s not always the case – it can just increase the noise and confusion as ‘information overload’ leaves us unsure about which way to turn. In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe and daughter Alice show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities as their father. They are now helping the successful window company build on the 43 years of trading.

LOCAL COUNCILLORS SUPPORT RESIDENTS OVER STAINDROP LODGE PLANNING APPLICATION Ecclesfield Parish Council’s Planning and Environmental Committee last Thursday discussed a planning application relating to the former Staindrop Lodge Hotel in Chapeltown.
Chair of the Committee and City Councillor, Cllr Alan Hooper said “There have been over 150 objections to this application, and representatives of the local community presented a compelling and cogent case against the planning application, which gained the unanimous support of committee members. Local residents have had a difficult 12 months with the temporary arrangements, and I’ve been involved in ensuring that Sheffield City Council Officers listen to the views of local residents and implement changes at the former hotel to minimise the impact on the local community.” The hotel has been for sale for a long time, and the planning application proposed converting the 36 bedrooms into studio flats

full weekend closures Drainage improvements
and using other available space to convert into another 8 flats.
Local Councillor Mike Levery stated “Accommodation for homeless people with complex needs requires good access to the necessary support services and needs to be on a relatively small scale to give the vital 1:1 support needed. A former hotel extended to convert 44 bedrooms into small ensuite flats is not appropriate; this application does not provide the specialist areas to support vulnerable residents, and its location is remote from the support services they need. Cllr Hooper and I will support local residents throughout this period and will speak in opposition to this proposal due to its size, unsuitable internal layout, inappropriate location and lack of support services in the locality. That isn't to say that we oppose any facilities for the homeless in North Sheffield because we don't; but it has to meet the tests that Staindrop Lodge doesn't meet before receiving our support.”
The planning application will go to Sheffield City Council’s Planning and Highways Committee for consideration by Councillors.
Cllr Levery added “The planning application states that “the suitability of the Staindrop Lodge Hotel for the use proposed has effectively already been established by Sheffield City Council”. It is one thing housing rough sleepers under Emergency COVID legislation on a temporary basis; it is quite another setting up long term accommodation for the homeless on a large scale in a residential area with none of the support services to hand.” Planning Application 21/00266/ FU is open to comment/objection until Wednesday 10 March. Over 150 comments/objections have been lodged so far. •

We’re carrying out improvements to the drainage on the A616 around the Stocksbridge area. We’ll be closing the route between Fox Valley roundabout at Deepcar to the A628 Flouch roundabout for potentially three weekends.
The weekend closures will be in place from 8pm Friday to 6am on Monday on the following dates:
There will also be a week’s worth of overnight closures and temporary traffic lights in place for four weeks.
Friday 19 March to Monday 22 March
This is to allow us to replace five drainage pipes across the A616 which are at a depth of 3.5 metres.
Friday 26 March to Monday 29 March Friday 9 April to Monday 12 April (contingency)
All businesses are open as usual although there will be no access over the weekends along the A616 between Mortimer Road / Midhopestones and Gilbert Hill / Langsett so drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and follow the diversion route.

Town funding of £24 Million approved Transformative investment plans for Stocksbridge have been approved by the Government, with over £24million of funding set to be delivered to the town.
The announcement was made as part of the last week's Budget, when Chancellor Rishi Sunak gave the go ahead to the Stockbridge Town Deal. It will fund a comprehensive package of measures to level up the town and surrounding area and deliver new opportunities for local people. In particular it focuses on improving local connectivity, supporting healthier lifestyles, opening up access to education and training, and promoting sustainability. A Town Investment Plan was created by the Stocksbridge Town Deal Board based on a public consultation that took place last autumn. The
Board brought together members from the local community, businesses, elected representatives, and local authorities. It is co-chaired by the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, Miriam Cates, and Mark Dransfield, the managing director of Dransfield Properties Ltd, working alongside a team from Sheffield City Council. Among the projects that will now receive funding are a new post-16 education hub at Stocksbridge High School, redevelopment of public spaces on Manchester Road, new sports facilities at Oxley Park, improvements to walking and cycling trails along the Little Don River, in-
vestment in Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre, and a new local bus network to serve Stocksbridge, Deepcar, and surrounding villages.
importantly it gives us the chance to build a better future for the whole community.
It is anticipated that the investment will help to attract new jobs and businesses to the town, with some of the money being spent on providing new commercial and community space on the site of the current library.
"I would like to thank everyone who has been part of the Town Deal project and has helped to achieve this fantastic result. We must now focus on delivering a programme that can be truly transformative for Stocksbridge, Deepcar, and the surrounding area.
Commenting on the announcement, Miriam Cates MP said "I'm absolutely delighted that the Chancellor has approved our Town Deal. This is a major investment and clear vote of confidence in our area. Most
"The Town Deal offers the targeted investment that Stocksbridge so desperately needs. It will regenerate our local economy, upskill our workforce and provide the conditions to grow for the future."
Mark Dransfield said: "Stocksbridge has often felt like a forgotten part of the wider region so to achieve this level of funding for the town is absolutely great news and testament to the hard work and determination of all the board members, as well as the team of officers at Sheffield City Council. "Everyone has worked hard through an incredibly tough year to deliver a bid which will bring a real transformation to our community and we look forward now to working on the next stage and making our towns fund projects a reality."
From Couch to 5K and beyond for Home Runners Louise and Jason JUST a few weeks ago they were couch to 5K novices…but now Louise Fieldsend and partner Jason Williams are heading for the full marathon as they join the St Luke’s Hospice Home Run. Home Run is the charity’s March virtual fundraising event, which sees participants running just 13 miles to help raise the vital funds that will help St Luke’s continue caring for hundreds of people across Sheffield, in their own homes. Regular runners are going the full distance in one run, while others are spreading the distance over a few days. And having only taken up running back in the autumn, that’s exactly what Deepcar based Louise and Jason are doing. But with a schedule of three sessions per week - all of them in excess of two miles - they are in line to run way past the 13 mile target and head instead towards a fill marathon distance.
“Jason has done running on and off most of his life but not to any serious extent for more than a decade,” said Louise, a project coordinator with Westfield Health. “And I’ve not done any running since I was at school and I’ll be 44 this year so that’s a long time ago. “We’ve done a lot of walking since lockdown though and when a few of the people at Westfield said they’d started the Couch to 5K, we decided we’d try it too because it just felt like we needed a new health challenge.” The couple following the Couch to 5K app’s advice on mixing walking and running but were soon up to being able to run for 10 minutes at a time. And when they heard about the St Luke’s Home Run, they decided to put their new found running skills to good use. “My grandad passed away at St Luke’s 30 years ago and I know a lot of people, like most people in Sheffield do, who have been sup-
ported by the St Luke’s services,” said Louise. “It’s a fantastic cause and it’s giving us that little bit of a push to keep us running. “I know it’s only supposed to be 13 miles but I feel confident that by the end of March we’ll have done the equivalent of a full marathon - and we’ve always passed our original target of £250 so we’re very happy.” To support Louise and Jason’ Home Run visit www.justgiving. com/fundraising/louise-v-fieldsend For full details of how to join the St Luke’s Home Run simply visit www.stlukeshospice.org.uk/support/home-run

New base opens to support adults with brain injuries
A Yorkshire charity has opened a new base to support more adults from across the region and beyond who have brain injuries or complex needs. Founded in 1997, Sheffield-based Paces is a specialist centre, charity and school for individuals with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders. Kirstin Hague and Sarah Perrin, who have been supported by the organisation since day one and whose parents were among the founders of the charity, cut the ribbon on the new 8,000 square foot facility at Smithy Wood Business Park. The base, just off junction 35 of the M1, is two miles from the previous headquarters and current home of Paces School at High Green. The fully refurbished building will house the adult services provision, Paces Living, and the charity’s administration and fundraising teams. The additional space will allow three-times as many adults to be supported in the future with an improved space to offer conductive education sessions that improve the mobility of those who have acquired brain
injuries – such as through a Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s. In time, Paces will also develop a service for young adults aged between 18-25 to ensure the organisation is able to offer the best possible care for those who need it no matter what their age. Dr Spencer Pitfield, Chief Executive of Paces, said: “We never want to have to turn people away at Paces and our new headquarters at Smithy Wood will support us in that aim. Following a complete refurbishment, the easily accessible building will allow us to support three-times as many adults with brain injuries and complex needs. Paces has been campaigning for a new home for some time to allow for the expansion of its services and the numbers it can support. Moving adult services and the charity’s operational staff to Smithy Wood will allow plans to be taken forward for a new home for Paces School.
Ann Menzies-Blythe, Chair of Trustees at Paces, said: “It has been a hugely challenging 12 months for the charity sector, which is why I am so proud we have been able to secure this new base, refurbish and open it despite everything we have faced. “I want to thank everyone who has raised money for Paces, donated or signed up as a corporate partner. Your support has allowed us to move to Smithy Wood, enhance what we can offer to the existing adults we work with and ensure we can help more individuals with brain injuries and complex needs, from across Yorkshire and beyond, in the near future. More details about Paces Living Adult Services can be found at www.pacesliving. org.uk • Chief Executive Dr Spencer Pitfield (right) and the Paces Living Adult Services team welcoming one of the first adults to Smithy Wood.

Your Letters Saving energy Upper Don Renewable Energy is a local group keen on encouraging each of us to think about what we can do to combat climate change. To that end, we challenged each school in Stocksbridge and Penistone to think about how they could save energy. The idea is that we can all do something and that it can make a difference. We asked that, after discussing what could be done with schools and parents, the children should commit to keeping up the effort for 3 months. For the 16-18 year olds from Penistone and Stocksbridge we have challenged them to write an essay considering what needs to be done to combat climate change. The title is "If I ruled the World"! Competition rules available on request. We had planned to launch this in Spring 2020. Covid happened and lockdown arrived. We saw a chink of light in the Autumn and quickly launched the Schools Challenge. Covid returned. So, we've now decided to shelve the under 16s part of the challenge and hit the ground running by restarting it this September (there's nothing to stop schools thinking , talking and having a few practice runs before then). We felt that schools would have enough to think about when all return this week. All schools in Penistone and Stocksbridge will receive a letter from us by the end of the week. We tend to worry more when we feel helpless in the face of a problem. If we start by taking small steps towards the solution, we feel that we're part of that solution and doing what we can. Well, by beginning to travel in a better direction, we're beginning to do what we can, we're having a bash! Our email address is: "udrenergy@gmail.com" Upper Don renewable Energy Group

Eric Stead MG awarded Platinum dealer of the year! A Sheffield based, family run car dealership is celebrating being awarded MG Motor “Platinum Dealer of the Year” because of record sales and excellence in aftersales in 2020. Eric Stead MG were awarded Platinum status after seeing tremendous sales growth in 2020 with a healthy plug-in car mix and their pro-active marketing activity throughout the year. The award follows being crowned MG Motor UK Aftersales dealership of the year for the second year running in 2020. Despite the challenging times Eric Stead MG has continued to excel and has evolved their business by offering remote and contactless sales and ser-
vicing, and a click and collect service for their new and used vehicles.
MG Motor, the UK’s fastest-growing car brand, welcomed the addition of two new affordable and practical electric cars to its growing range within the past year, with the introduction of the MG5 EV and MG HS Plug-in. The MG5 EV is unique in Britain’s EV market, offering the flexibility and practicality of a capacious estate car with great driving dynamics and absolutely no exhaust emissions. The brand is already the fourth most popular EV brand in the UK and the latest model will further strengthen its position. Simon Stead of Eric Stead MG said: “To be awarded Platinum Dealer of the Year by MG UK is a fantas-
tic achievement for our dealership and is something the whole team is proud of. The award is a testament to the hard work of our team and their dedication to provide great customer service. We would like to thank all of our customers for supporting us through what has been a difficult time for everyone without our fantastic customer base we wouldn’t be able to carry on doing what we love – thank you.” To find out more about Eric Stead MG and its new and used car offering including 0% finance across the new MG petrol and electric range visit: https://www.ericstead.co.uk or call the team on 0114 245 4404.
Be kind to yourself this spring When times get tough, a warm bath can help to soothe body and mind.
With so many freedoms taken away from us this winter, and we prepare to get more active in Spring it’s particularly important that we’re kind to ourselves. Evidence shows that kindness and compassion, to ourselves and to others, actually improve our mental health. Many people find a warm bath helps to melt away their worries. And in fact, baths also help to relieve muscle pain and tension, lower blood sugar and improve heart health. Being in a warm bath can diminish feelings of depression and pessimism, giving you a sense of comfort that allows your mind and body to relax. It can also help you to sleep better at night. Do you miss bathing? Bathing can become difficult for all sorts of reasons, but the issue we hear most commonly is people struggling to get out of the bath. This is easy to solve with a walkin bath. They usually have a low step and door to get in and out easily. Some walk-in baths have a powered seat that lifts, lowers and even reclines you into the water. You can have anti-scald taps,
slip-resistant floors and shower attachments. Some baths can be fitted in just one day, although many customers decide to make other changes in their bathroom at the same time such as adding new flooring, tiles or grab rails. Create your own sanctuary Walk-in baths are just one of the many ways we help people every day at AHM Installations. We can provide showers and shower trays, wet rooms, raised toilets, sinks and bidet seats, all complemented with beautiful flooring and wall panelling. Is cost a concern? Installing a new, accessible bathroom isn’t something you do every day, and understandably people worry about the cost. There is financial help available for those with a qualifying condition. It’s called the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) – a meanstested grant to make changes at home to help less able people lead more independent lives. The maximum payment is £30,000. Search ‘DFG gov uk’ on the internet or call your local council for more details.
Grants aside, there are all sorts of bathroom options to suit your budget. Find a supplier you trust who will help you understand what’s available. You might only need grab rails by your toilet, for example, or a low-level access shower. You may see the big bathroom brands advertising in national newspapers, but it’s the smaller, specialist companies who will take time to understand your needs and help you at a much lower price. That’s what AHM Installations prides itself on doing. It was set up by husband-and-wife team Simon and Julie 20 years ago, following their experiences in nursing, caring and the mobility industry. We guide our customers carefully through the installation of new bathroom equipment within their home. We’re always happy to answer your questions. Please call us 0114 3582320. We also offer discounts for military veterans and for those with dementia.

‘Stocksbridge Rugby cleared to return to training’ Following the Governments roadmap detailing the steps & timescales of our return to some sort of normality of life, Stocksbridge Rugby have been given their return to rugby roadmap by the RFU. From 29th March the club will be allowed to return to training, with some contact work allowed. This will be followed four weeks later, from 26th April with potential adapted law matches. This is games without srums or mauls. This is welcome news for the frustrated players who trained throughout the summer & autumn last Year, with only one solitary game, a win over near neighbours Wortley Rugby just before Christmas to showcase their skills. ‘Given the timing of these stages for return, it is unlikely we will get to play any further meaningful games this season’ said Director of Rugby, Andy Tyers ‘indeed, all competitions at our level were cancelled back in November’. An early & more intense pre-season now looks the best option for the Stocksbridge Club, as
they will look towards mounting a promotion challenge when the next league campaign eventually does get underway. Meanwhile, many of the current 1st XV squad have decided to get their running gear on during lock down 3.0, & have signed up to the Run Nation ‘Hadrians Wall virtual ultra run’ for 2021. This involves running the course of 85 miles which covers the length of Hadrians wall (virtually) by the end of April. Individually the players signed up have this goal in sight, & it will help keep the boys in shape along the way. After a tough period of lockdown, one of the aims is to raise some funds for the Club, in conjunction with a charity through sponsorship. A few former teammates & players at the club, along with friends & family are currently in the process of setting up a charity in memory of former team mate & good friend Oliver Sinclair, who sadly passed away last July. The main driver of the charity in Oliver’s memory ‘Oliver’s Army’ is to help aid mental health awareness. This is in the process of being set up, & the plan is for Stocksbridge Rugby to donate 50% of all funds raised to the Oliver’s Army charity once it is up & running. One idea is that the remaining 50% of funds raised for the rugby club will go towards pitch side infrastructure in Oliver’s memory, & to combine it with the charity ‘Oliver’s Army’. Potentially, an Oliver’s Army scoreboard for match days, & a fixtures board visible from the roadside at the ground on Coal Pit Lane, advertising Stocksbridge Rugby ‘forthcoming fixtures’, along with other important charity information. A just giving page is being set up, & details will be made available shortly.

PREMIERSHIP TITLE WINNER ADAM ELLIS HAS SIGNED FOR SHEFFIELD TIGERS Ellis, who won the league with Swindon in 2019, has been on the market since the Robins announced they would be sitting out 2021 due to stadium development. The Great Britain international is highly rated and will combine his Tru Plant Tigers duties with racing in Poland and Sweden. And he’s revealed how he has always wanted to race for Sheffield following previous visits in the opposing camp. “I’m really excited to have signed for Sheffield this season,” he said. “It’s a club I’ve wanted to race for for a few years now and I want to thank Marc and Damien Bates and Simon Stead for having me on board in 2021.” Ellis is encouraged by the improving situation regarding the pandemic in the UK with the season set to start on May 17. He said: “The news coming from the UK looks really positive at the moment, so fingers crossed we can get
the season started in May with fans on the terraces.” Ellis isn’t quite ready to start practice for the new season, which under normal circumstances would be starting this month. “As we won’t be starting until May I’ll wait until April to get out on the bike,” he said. “I’m keeping busy doing some work on the house but I’m really looking forward to getting out there. “It’s still a worrying time for the sport worldwide but Britain and the vaccine seems to be in a much better place. I can’t wait to catch up with the boys at Sheffield and go racing.” Ellis is the second Swindon rider to make the switch to South Yorkshire as he joins Aussie ace Troy Batchelor. Other confirmed signings are Kyle Howarth, Jack Holder and Josh Bates with two remaining places to be confirmed
