‘Amazing’ Teacher makes ‘bionic arm’ for 12 Year old boy 12 Year old Lewis McCaslin, from Oughtibridge is the focus of nationwide attention after his teacher successfully made him a new light-weight arm using a 3d printer for £30. Daniel Grant, a teacher in the Design Technology department at Bradfield School, offered to build Lewis a special, lighter ‘bionic arm’ instead of his heavy NHS arm The new arm was made using a 3D printer in the school’s DT department, and attaches at Lewis’ left elbow. His Mother Nicki McCaslin said
“He will now be able to ride his bike, properly. He recently had a bad accident, he had to lean right over the handle bars, and now he doesn’t have to do that. "Until now Lewis always had to manage without a left forearm." Bradfield School Head Teacher Adrian May said ‘It’s fantastic how Mr Grant has used his skills and expertise to produce such a wonderful gift for Lewis. Both Mr Grant and Lewis are role models for us all here at Bradfield School and I am pleased that this endeavour has been recognised and applauded by so many.’

MAN CHARGED IN CONNECTION TO SERIES OF ARSON INCIDENTS A man has been charged following a series of arson incidents in Sheffield earlier this week. Police received reports from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue (SYFR) that dustbins had been deliberately set on fire at eight separate properties in the High Green area between 8pm on 23 March and 2am on 24 March. An 89-year-old woman was taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries following one of the fires which occurred in Thompson Hill. Officers from Sheffield Response Team arrested Robert Ashford, 37, of Sunny Bank, High Green, the same evening. He has since been charged with four counts of arson and four counts of arson with recklessness to whether life was endangered. He will appear before Sheffield Crown Court on 23 April 2021.

RAPIST CHANGED HIS NAME AND LEFT UK WITHOUT TELLING POLICE A RAPIST who left a disabled woman with life threatening injuries changed his name and left the country without telling police. Jeremy Duffy, formerly known as Jeremiah Sheridan, served nine years in jail for rape. But last year he changed his name by deed poll, obtained a new passport and driving licence and travelled to San Francisco and France. In December 2020 officers found him travelling by ferry and informed Essex Police. The 48-year-old, admitted raping a woman who lived with cerebral palsy at her home in Stocksbridge near Sheffield in 1991. At Basildon Crown Court yesterday, Samantha Wright, prosecuting, said: “He was interviewed and said he was aware that he had to notify but that he must have forgotten and it slipped his mind. “The new name, he said he was trying to move on with his life and that it slipped his mind. He went to San Francisco with his new passport and no questions were asked.” Duffy had pretended to be selling carpets and furniture when he knocked at his victim’s home, but the vicious attack left her with life Mitigating, Mark Dacey said: “He wants to threatening injuries. move forward. LIBERTY STEEL:
3
Government ready themselves to step in and save steelworkers but not the owner... The Government is preparing to trigger an emergency plan to save 5,000 British jobs in the event of a collapse of Sanjeev Gupta's steel business, writes the Financial Mail on Sunday
Gupta, founder of Liberty Steel and its vast parent company GFG Alliance, wrote to Government officials on Thursday in a desperate bid to secure a £170million bailout from taxpayers. Troubles at the UK's third largest steel producer follow the collapse of its main financier Greensill Capital, which counted former Prime Minister David Cameron as a paid adviser. Labour has called on a standards watchdog to investigate the extent of government access offered to financial services firm Greensill Capital.
Concerns are now rising that Gupta's British operations could slide into administration unless new financing can be arranged. Gupta's call to Ministers for help comes just months after he forked out £42million – nearly a third of the bailout request – on a house in Belgravia. Liberty owns a dozen steel plants in Britain, including sites at Stocksbridge and Rotherham. Private equity firms are understood to be assessing parts of GFG's global empire. In its letter to the Department for Business GFG asked for the money to cover working capital and operating losses. But Whitehall is thought to be concerned that bailout money might be used in other parts of Gupta's global
empire instead of supporting UK jobs. There are also fears the firm could then require further financial support. It is thought the preferred route would be to wait for Liberty Steel to enter compulsory liquidation, at which point the Government would step in and keep the company running until a new buyer could be found. Another option could see the Government support administrators to find a new buyer if Liberty Steel, which is thought to comprise seven different companies, collapses. Liberty Steel was forced to halt production at some sites earlier this month to preserve cash. It owes Greensill an estimated £3.6 billion, according to the Financial Times.
The CROSS on the HILL The Cross on the Hill Churches Together in Stocksbridge and District are lighting the cross at Green Moor for Easter week and until the end of April. The cross has been erected for around fifty years at various sites on the hilltop. The cross is not only part of the churches but has become adopted by our community here in Stocksbridge, so much so, that when it went missing there were many expressions of concern from the Valley. The lighting of the cross, which is now a feature in the community, celebrates the sacrifice and crucifixion of Christ and is a major Christian festival. Unfortunately, some churches have remained closed following national Covid lockdown directives. This means that churchgoers have no way of celebrating Easter and therefore the cross becomes a more significant focal point. We have all been on a terrible journey through Covid and its effects. Many have suffered bereavement or social and mental pressures. The churches are one part of the community which would normally offer support in these cases. However, it has been very apparent that the people of Stocksbridge have risen to the occasion through offers of love, concern, physical help or just being there for each other. These values are those signified by the cross. The cross has been alongside us all through the crisis and will be there going onwards in the same way the churches members live through Easter into the hope of the future. We can look up to the cross, in the same way as we clapped for NHS, and think about all that we are going through and those worthy of our thanks and support. CTSD would like to thank Mr Godley on whose land the cross is erected and who is responsible for building the cross. The members of St Ann’s church who sort out the lighting and electricals and to Liberty Steels who provide the electrical supply to light the cross.

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe and daughter Alice show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities as their father. They are now helping the successful window company build on the 43 years of trading.

MARCHING THE MONTH OF MARCH FOR PROSTATE CANCER A bar maid at a local golf club and avid golfer is nearing ½ million steps this month in a bid to raise £1000 for lifesaving prostate cancer research. 31 year old, Liana O’Sullivan embarked on the challenge after her local golf club, Stocksbridge & District like all clubs had to close. Liana told Look Local “Since the first lockdown I have been doing a lot of walking. Mainly to get out of the house and enjoy the countryside. While golf courses have been forced to close meaning I was unable to play golf and I have been furloughed I thought walking was a good way to keep me busy and get me out of the house! I’m walking locally, around local reservoirs & villages. We have such beautiful countryside surrounding us, we’re really lucky to have it right on our doorstep. It would have been nice to venture further afield to explore but I’ll save that for when covid restrictions have been lifted. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK, killing one man every 45 minutes, thats 11,000 men each year in the UK. It's killing dads, partners, sons, brothers, grandads, uncles and mates. But it doesn't have to be that way. I'm raising money to help fund lifesaving research for men and their families affected by prostate cancer. To check out Liana’s progress and see if she makes ½ million steps; https://marchthemonth.prostatecanceruk. org/fundraising/lianas-march-it-in-march

The initial stages of training are crucial, and it takes the support of a very important volunteer to help our puppies thrive. Puppy Raisers are given a puppy at 6 weeks old and over the course of about 14 months they will introduce the pup to the wider world, ensuring that they follow basic commands while helping them to become familiar with as many situations as possible. Our pups are superheroes in training, so we need them to be prepared for whatever the world has in store for them! The Puppy Raiser role is such a rewarding role, watching your puppy develop knowing that you’re contributing to their future career as a guide dog. There will be plenty of puppy cuddles to go around but this is a demanding role which takes a great deal of commitment. The puppy will be with you 24/7, cannot be left alone for more than 3 hours and you must have an enclosed garden with a suitable area for the pup to do its business; not forgetting the classic puppy cheekiness so be prepared for the odd accident on the carpet or a chewed slipper! No need to worry about the cost of food and vet bills as Guide Dogs covers all expenses. Your local Puppy Development Advisor will also be on hand to answer and questions you might have relating to your puppy’s training or care. To find out more information, please contact Danielle on danielle.wilkin@guidedogs.org.uk or 0800 781 1444.

INVITATIONS BEING SENT FOR COVID VACCINE SECOND DOSES Patients in Sheffield who received their first covid vaccine in January are due for their second dose and are now being contacted and invited to an appointment.
“If I can encourage one person to have the vaccine I’ll be happy, it’s the best chance we’ve got in getting our lives back after such a terrible year. If you’re due to have your second jab, don’t put it off.
“You may not be protected until at least seven days after your second dose and it’s important to remember that even if you have had two doses of a covid vaccine, you may still give covid to someone else.
LINLEY & SIMPSON
This follows earlier recommendations from UK Chief Medical Officers to give second doses up to 12 weeks after initial vaccination.
Patients who received their vaccine at a local vaccination centre in Sheffield will be contacted by their GP practice to arrange their second dose when it’s their turn, this will typically be at week 11 please don’t contact your GP practice.
Those that booked through the national booking service booked their first and second appointments at the same time and therefore won’t be called by their GP practice. John Burkhill, well known in the city as ‘the man with the pram’ for his fundraising efforts for Macmillan, recently received his second vaccination, sharing his experience John said: “I’m feeling great and really grateful to have been vaccinated against covid.
“I’m looking forward to when social distancing is over and being able to get back out again, doing what I love and fundraising for charity. Let’s get vaccinated and get back out there Sheffield.”
Alun Windle, Chief Nurse and Covid Vaccination Lead at NHS Sheffield CCG: “To give yourself the best protection and to protect those around you, you need to have both doses of a covid vaccine. “Don’t skip your second dose, if you experienced side effects with your first vaccination please don’t let it put you off having your second. It’s important that you still return for your next appointment. You may experience side effects from your second dose but these are mild and will last for 2-3 days. If you don’t have both doses, this may put your health at risk and at risk of complications from covid if you catch it.
“Being vaccinated doesn’t protect you completely, but it is our best defence in our global fight against this pandemic. Many more people need to be vaccinated and protected against covid so please continue to follow the current safety restrictions to protect yourself and those around you”.
Appointments for the first doses are still available for the rest of March, but they are filling up fast. So if you are in an eligible group – meaning you are 50 or over, have a health condition that puts you at greater risk, or are a health or social care worker – and you haven’t booked your first dose yet, the time to do so is right now. It’s quick and simple to book at www.nhs. uk/covid-vaccination or by phoning 119. Photo: John Burkhill and nurse Sally Hammond
Looking after your bike is as easy as A, B…‘M’! Cyclists are being encouraged to dust the cobwebs off their bike, currently hidden in the corner of their garage, shed or basement, and get ready for Spring using a new beSPOKE how-to guide. South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) has teamed up with two of our South Yorkshire cycle hubs to create a new YouTube series to help cyclists get out pedalling again safely and securely. The series of bite-sized howto clips, on Safer Roads’ SRP TV channel, focus on cycle maintenance and show riders how to follow the basic ‘M’ check system before returning to our roads. Joanne Wehrle, manager of SYSRP, said: “COVID restrictions have provided the time for many of us to fall back in love with cycling or to try it for the first time.
“But just like with a car or motorbike, your bicycle needs to be shown some care to ensure you stay safe while out on the roads. “To help new riders, we have worked with the Rotherham and Barnsley Hub teams to create a new series on the basics of looking after your bicycle, no matter what size, shape or style you own.” Jamie Raven, from Barnsley Active Travel Hub, who copresents the series, explains why anyone can follow the on-line guide. “You don’t need a fancy workshop or expensive tools” he said. “It just takes a few basic checks prior to each ride to make all the difference. “The ‘M Check’ system is a great and simple reminder before every ride. We really want to get people out riding, which is where the series comes in, and don’t forget
your local Cycle Hub is there for free help and advice.” The series starts with ‘M Checks’ but then goes into a bit more detail to show cyclists how to undertake some simple running repairs that can improve the enjoyment and safety of your ride. Jamie added: “There is nothing worse than being stranded miles from home just because of a cable or bolt coming loose. “As new or returning riders, sometimes people are a little worried to start tinkering but we hope the series will give them some guidance and confidence, as well as encourage them to use their local cycle hub for more complex issues, as well as help and advice. “Our main aim is to get people out riding safely on the roads and cycle routes in South Yorkshire and beyond.”

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Your Letters – treatment, scans and the physical and mental impacts can take their toll. Entering the first national lockdown a year ago today, people affected by breast cancer faced additional challenges, such as appointments and treatments being paused or cancelled, and at a time of social isolation and separation from loved ones. As a Clinical Nurse Specialist on Breast Cancer Now’s Helpline, I hear daily how the pandemic has exacerbated an already worrying and uncertain time for people affected by breast cancer.

That’s why, when COVID-19 paused our face-toface events and courses, we rapidly moved our services online, so that we could continue to be there for people who we know need our support now more than ever – our Online Services mean we’re one click away for anyone, at any time, following a breast cancer diagnosis. Thanks to support received from players of People’s Postcode Lottery, our Moving Forward Online courses help people adjust to life after hospital treatment, offering specialist information and the chance to connect in a safe space with others who understand. Through Younger Women Together Online, women aged up to 45 join small groups to meet and hear from experts on issues including treatment, fertility, exercise, and mental health.
Your Letters Brilliant path network I'd like to say a huge thank you to the Steel Valley Project and Stocksbridge Walkers are Welcome for creating and maintaining our amazing network of paths around Stocksbridge. Walking them in all weathers and all seasons has kept me sane through the last year, and I'm sure many other people feel the same. I thought I knew the area quite well but by exploring new paths I realised I had a lot to learn! Its been great to go down to Fox Valley and, before I do the shopping, take an hour or two's walk in so many different directions, and spend a bit of time enjoying the amazing views. Or climbing over Townend or Whitwell into the Ewden valley. We are very lucky to have this on our doorstep. Thanks also to whoever has repaired the stone stile on the path over from the golf course to Cote House - its so much better. Ruth Morgan Deepcar

COVID-19 GRANTS EXTENDED FOR SHEFFIELD BUSINESSES Grants for Sheffield-based businesses closed under the national restrictions have been extended to 31st March to support them through lockdown. The extension will be applied automatically so businesses who have previously been receiving lockdown grants do not need to reapply for this. The Government has stated that most businesses will remain closed until 12th April at the earliest, so a range of financial support continues to be available for those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. This includes: Lockdown Support Grants Available to both ratepaying and non-ratepaying businesses who have been forced to close in local restrictions (T2/T3) or national lockdown since 14th October 2020. Supply Chain Business Support grant A grant for businesses based in Sheffield who supply hospitality, accommodation, leisure and entertainment sectors with goods or services.
Fire warning
Essential Open Business Support Grant Support for businesses with fixed costs that have been allowed to stay open under the most recent lockdown that started on 5th January 2021. The primary activity of the business must be the sale of goods and services on a face-to-face basis. Self Employed and Small Business Grants These grants are available to businesses who have low fixed property costs of £1500 or less, or those with no fixed property costs, such as self-employed businesses who are home-based. They must operate in, or supply to, a sector forced to close since 14 Oct 2020. All eligible businesses who haven’t previously received grants are encouraged to apply for the grants relevant to them by 31st March to ensure they receive the maximum amount of funding available. More information on the grants and the online application forms can be found on the Sheffield City Council website
South Yorkshire Fire reported an increasing number of incidents over the past week, having been inundated with deliberate fires - ranging from bin fires to not-socontrolled burns. The Fire & Rescue service posted on social media “A lot of these incidents we're seeing young people run away as we arrive. We know this is a small
minority of young people but, do you know where your kids are? Have you spoken to them, particularly those in the teenage years, about the potential consequences of fire-setting? Even small fires can quickly spread in the right conditions and, as the saying goes, it's all fun and games until someone gets hurt.”
£900M SPENDING FOR SOUTH YORKSHIRE
A spending package of almost £900m has been approved by Sheffield City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis to help South Yorkshire recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. Following an agreement with the Treasury, the mayor will borrow £500m against what it receives in gainshare funding. The total figure when combined with other pots totals £860m. Mayor Jarvis (pictured) said this was "devolution in action" and that more power was now in the hands of leaders in South Yorkshire rather than "Westminster calling the shots".

The plans, which were first announced nearly two weeks ago, were signed off by council leaders including Sheffield Council leader Bob Johnson and Doncaster mayor Ros Jones. About £300m is planned for investment in places, transport and infrastructure and another £200m of borrowed money will be invested in jobs and skills from 2022. These pots of borrowed money will be called the South Yorkshire Renewal Fund and will fund infrastructure projects. The mayor said he and local leaders were "rewriting the rule book" to meet the "seismic economic challenge" posed by Covid-19. He added: "Our plan sends a message of ambition and confidence: that South Yorkshire’s best days lie ahead of us, and we’re making our region an even better place to live, work and invest."

PUPILS AWARDED IN DREAM HOME COLOURING COMPETITION
Local News
PLAN AHEAD FOR EASTER BANK HOLIDAY TRAVEL TRANSPORT bosses in South Yorkshire are urging people to plan ahead and check before they travel over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, as essential engineering works will affect rail and tram services in the region. “These engineering works are essential to maintain our network and make our tram, Tram-Train and rail journeys more comfortable. They will take place over the Bank Holiday to minimise disruption to passengers but, as some services will be affected, we’d like to remind everyone to plan ahead and check their journey before they travel“, said Tim Taylor, Director of Customer Services for South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE). “As the network is still running at reduced capacity and social distancing guidelines remain in place, we’re also asking everyone to minimise their journeys where possible and consider if they can walk or cycle instead. If you do need to travel please remember to regularly wash or sanitise your hands, wear a face
Erris Homes, who are currently building 13 four-bedroom homes at their Cloverleaf Court development in Wharncliffe Side, challenged children at Wharncliffe Side Primary School and Oughtibridge Primary School to design their dream home to be in with the chance to win one of four £25 book vouchers. “It was wonderful to engage the children in our local community with the housebuilding process,” said sales manager Nick Ollis. “We received hundreds of entries for Erris Homes’ ‘My Dream Home’ drawing competition, and some of them really blew us away! There were so many inventive designs and it was very difficult to narrow the list down to just four. “We asked the children to consider how their dream homes could be eco-friendly, and it was inspiring to see how the children considered this in their drawings. From recycled and upcycled materials to solar panels and vegetable patches, the children really went above and beyond in this criteria! Each pupil who submitted an entry should be very proud of themselves.” The vouchers were awarded to Arabella, 11, and Franklin, 7, from Wharncliffe Side Primary School (pictured) and to Emily, 8, and Daniel, 6, from Oughtibridge Primary School. Erris Homes’ marketing manager Abbie Harrop (pictured) present-
ed the children with their book vouchers on Friday 26th March. “The children were very excited to learn they had won the competition,” she explained. “It was the perfect way to end their week before they broke up for half term!” Erris Homes officially launched the marketing suite at Cloverleaf Court the next day. “We have received very high levels of interest in this brand-new development, with many of those who have enquired looking to move before the end of the year,” said Nick. “Cloverleaf Court is part of Erris Homes’ ‘Excellence Collection,’ which means they have an enhanced specification as standard including double ovens, premium kitchen designs and electric garage doors. “We expect this development to be very popular with families who are already settled in the area but would like to upgrade to a newer, higher specification home.” Cloverleaf Court is situated on the site of the former Cloverleaf Car Sales on Main Road, Wharncliffe Side, and comprises 13 high specification four-bedroom family homes from £330,000. The marketing suite is open to visitors by appointment only over the bank holiday weekend from 10am to 5pm, Friday to Monday, and moving schemes are available.
covering, unless you’re exempt, and keep your distance from others and leave windows open where possible, so everyone can travel safely.” concluded Tim. Tram and Tram Train network Due to essential engineering works on the main track junction near Fitzalan Square/Ponds Forge in Sheffield, all tram and Tram Train services will be suspended on Saturday 3 April around 8pm, resuming on Tuesday morning (6 April). During this period, tram replacement bus services will run between Fitzalan Square/Pond Square and Manor Top (BL1) and Gleadless Townend and Halfway (BL2). Valid tram tickets will be accepted on Stagecoach and First buses in Sheffield and Rotherham where tram or Tram Train services usually operate and on Northern Rail’s train replacement buses between Sheffield and Meadowhall Interchange. A list of alternative bus services and the tram replacement bus services timetables are available at Stagecoachbus.com. Passengers can plan
their journey using Travel South Yorkshire’s journey planner. Rail services Essential engineering works north of Sheffield rail station will affect rail services to Rotherham, Worksop, Retford, Meadowhall, Barnsley, Wakefield, Doncaster and Leeds on Saturday 3, Sunday 4 and Monday 5 April. Rail replacement buses will be available for some routes, and some services will not call at all stations. Passengers can check if their journeys will be affected via National Rail Enquiries, with their train operator or by following #EasterRailWorks on Twitter. Information on Northern Rail services is available at https://www.northernrailway. co.uk/. Bus services will operate a weekend timetable over the Bank Holiday. Customers can also access the latest travel information by calling Traveline on 01709 515151, which will operate every day over the Easter weekend between 8am and 7pm.
COLLEGE SECURES £1.16M OF FUNDING FOR TRAINEESHIPS Barnsley College has led a collaborative bid which has secured £1.16m of government funding to expand traineeship provision across the region.
The initiative between Barnsley College and Independent Training Services Ltd. (ITS); RNN Group, The Sheffield College and DN Colleges Group aims to support up to 400 people aged 19-24 in gaining employability skills and work experience by 31 July 2021. David Akeroyd, Deputy Principal, Development and Productivity at Barnsley College said: “Traineeships provide fantastic work experience opportunities blended with relevant training and employability skills. They are a pathway into employment or higher level qualifications such as apprenticeships. This funding sets us on course to create regional employment opportunities which are desperately needed to aid recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. “This funded collaborative effort is bolstered by incentives announced in the March 2021 budget, to make traineeships and apprenticeships an attrac-
tive proposition for regional employers seeking to develop new skills and talent into the workforce.” Up until 30 September 2021, employers providing traineeship placements can access a £1,000 incentive payment for each trainee they support. Progressing that trainee into an apprenticeship, or recruiting a new apprentice, offers up to £4,000 in additional incentive funding. Traineeships present an opportunity for a person aged 19-24, to earn employability skills and work experience which will help them to secure employment or progress into higher level training. The work placement element of a traineeship is expected to have a minimum duration of 70 hours, with programmes typically spread over several weeks and flexibility for more than one employer to engage a single trainee. Employability skills, Functional Skills and other relevant training which may be sector-specific, is blended into each trainee’s programme based on a skills assessment undertaken at the outset.

NEW MANAGER FOR LEGION Stocksbridge Rugby Local football side Chapeltown Royal British Legion FC have appointed Adam Todd as their new manager for the 2021/22 season. The 34-year-old who takes over this summer will be assisted by Dave Adams, Paddy Carrig and Dale Shaw as the club enter their 12th season. Todd has spent the last 14 years playing in the league, captaining Stocksbridge to the Premier league title in 2011 and winning it twice with Stannington Village in 2017 and 2018.
The football club was formed in 2010 by Garry Turley and Joe Hindmarch and have competed in the Blades Super Draw league ever since. They play their home games at St George’s Park Thorncliffe on Pack Horse Lane, High Green. They are currently sponsored by Greener Living, a successful company that also has roots in Chapeltown. Adam Todd said “The side have had some big ups and downs over the last few seasons. The club does some great work in the community every year and we want to produce a successful
team on the pitch that the area can be proud of too.”
The Chapeltown Royal British Legion club was originally near the old HSBC Bank on Station Road, which opened in 1921 when the British Legion was founded, and moved to its current premises on Ecclesfield Road in 1928. Every year the league give the club no fixture on Remembrance Sunday, and all players and staff take part in a march around Chapeltown which concludes with the laying of wreaths at the memorial point in Chapeltown Park.
Smash charity target in a week
In less than a week of the ‘Run Nation Hadrians Wall ultra run for 2021’, Stocksbridge Rugby have broken their initial target of £500 raised. This will benefit both the Club itself & the ‘Oliver’s Army‘ charity, supporting mental health awareness, set up in memory of the late Oliver Sinclair. This welcome surprise has forced the club runners to rethink their target, & organiser Adam Roles-Middlehurst reckons they will be able to more than double their original estimate to raise at least £1000 now. Left to right - Paddy Carrig, Adam Todd, Dave Adams, Dale Shaw. (Photo credit - Ciara Bullock)
Stocksbridge Rugby & Oliver’s Army are massively grateful to the public & local business communities for your generous
support & donations, particularly given the current climate. If you haven’t yet got round to making a donation, go to the JustGiving page; www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/oliversarmyandstocksbridge . Meanwhile, on the field, the Club have delayed any return to training, partly to allow for the runners to complete their efforts, until Wednesday 5th May. There is little chance of any friendly fixtures before this date, & it will give the club time to assess the make up of any competition there might be. New players are always welcome, please turn up at Stadium Coal Pit Lane from 6pm.
Musical Treats at Easter There are two free live Facebook shows this weekend. Music Makes Memories on Easter Sunday for SCCCC (Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care), an amazing charity which gives magnificent support to older people across Sheffield. The event has been kindly sponsored by SOAR and People Keeping Well and poster sponsor, Norrie Waite Slater, solicitors. We have the amazing Catherine Rannus performing for an hour.
'Celebrate Easter with Twelve Trees Care' on Easter Monday, with the fantastic Jessica Mary Brett, who will sing songs from the movies and musicals. Both events start at 2pm and are ideal for all the family. Secondary School pupils receive adolescent vaccinations This was a combined effort from Outreach Staff, NHS nursing staff and Penistone Town Council. Rachel Barraclough Family Centre Manager stated ‘this has made a great impact on the safety and health of our young people, parents gave high praise for the service being delivered in the local area’.
NHS Children’s Vaccination Team Barnsley, at Penistone Family Centre (Resource Centre) throughout Feb & March ran a vaccination programme. This vaccination programme ensured that 551 secondary pupils had their adolescent vaccinations.
The centre will also be used as a collection point on the 31st March to distribute food hampers to families with children on free school meals, this is a national scheme that BMBC is leading on for vulnerable families.

TIGERS boss Simon Stead has revealed his relief at getting the Adam Ellis deal over the line. Great Britain international Ellis was available following Swindon’s decision to sit out 2021 due to stadium redevelopment.
“I rate Adam very highly,” said Stead. “He’s got a nice style and he suits the Sheffield track superbly. Our social media team posted a race clip of him riding here and watching him you could see how comfortable he looked on our track. “It took a while to get the deal over the line, not because of money I hasten to add. Adam is a good lad who is based in France and it was more the logical side of things which needed to be sorted out.
“Rosco (Rossiter) speaks very highly of him too and I’m looking forward to working closely with him at Sheffield and I’m sure Olly Allen and myself will be keeping a close watch on his form with our Great Britain hats on. “He’s a very professional rider who has matured greatly and has a great determination to go as far as he can in the sport.” Sheffield are continuing their build-up to the new season, which is due to start in May, by putting plans in place behind the scenes.
A new-look raceday programme will be produced by the club in partnership with Curtis Sport Ltd, who also provide programmes to Newcastle United,
West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City. Listening to feedback from supporters, it will include a four-page bond racecard to make it easier for supporters to complete. Co-promoter Peter Mole is also hoping to see the relaunch of supporters meetings at the New Barrack Tavern close to the stadium as soon as restrictions are lifted. “They are great functions and a really enjoyable way for some supporters to come together,” he said. “The STAARS (Sheffield Tigers Aid and Rider Support) group do so much fine work, we are looking forward to seeing them again very soon.”

Golfers back in action
After 12 weeks of waiting for the Lockdown restriction to be eased, Stocksbridge golfers were out in full force on Monday 29 March.
It has been a long wait for Club’s avid golfers and this was reflected in the numbers that had booked in to play on the first day that the course was allowed to open. For once the weather was kind to the members and visitors to the course with warm sunshine, admittedly though the Stocksbridge wind was blowing with good gusto. Stocksbridge golfers are a hardy bunch though and a bit of windy weather was never going to put them off.
The course is in magnificent condition and probably has benefited from three months of rest from the Club’s golfers. Throughout lockdown the Green’s staff have worked very hard to undertake all the usual winter jobs and have the course set up in tip top condition for the return of playing members and visitors.
Club President, John Yeates, said that this was a big day for the Golf Club and the local community: “Being able to play outdoor sports such as golf is good physical exercise, but more than that it is an opportunity to be outdoors and socialise with friends, within the permitted limits of course.”
For the first day back at golf the Club put on a Stableford competition and many dozens of members booked in for the event. Alan Revill (pictured) was one of the first members to get back out on the course and said: “ I am so pleased that the course is back open. The Club’s members have waited patiently for this day and it is perfect timing for the summer season of competitions, which will start later this week. It’s an important day for the Club and the wider community as the restrictions from Lockdown are eased.” The Club is now open not only for members, but visitors as well. If you are interested in playing at the Golf Club please contact the Club Professional, Roger Broad, on 0114 2882779.
