8 year old begins village clean-up
Challenge to clean up village and help rescue dogs
An 8-year-old girl has embarked on a month of litter-picking in an attempt to clean up her village and raise money for charity. Mya, who lives in Thurgoland near Penistone was always commenting on the dropped litter in the village, so Mum, Rachel, decided to buy a litter picker upper. Rachel told Look Local “…we decided to buy a litter picker upper and then we thought why not try and raise money for charity at the same time. • Site staff are not currently able to offer assistance, so please make sure that you can unload your vehicle and deposit your waste into the appropriate container on your own
Mya loves animals so that was the obvious choice, we looked at various charities and decided on West Yorkshire dog rescue as it has a base in Penistone and they, like all charities are struggling due to COVID.”
• Only waste from your own place of residence in Sheffield can be accepted.
The Thurgoland Primary School pupil is attempting to pick litter everyday in April – even on her birthday
We would encourage residents with significant volumes of DIY waste and garden waste to consider contacting a registered skip hire company.
3.2 million pets have been acquired during the last year and the rescue centres & RSPCA are realistically expecting a surge in unwanted dogs as owners resume normal working patterns away from home. Small rescue centres could reach crisis with their already limited funds, lack of fundraising and closed charity shops.
Residents can arrange for collections to take place from their home for both garden waste and bulky waste.

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe and daughter Alice show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities as their father. They are now helping the successful window company build on the 43 years of trading.

‘SUPER’ Elle turns lockdown into Super Challenge A Y6 pupil at Deepcar St John's school has raised over £650 for local charities, by walking, cycling and skating themselves through lockdown. Elle Kimptom set herself the challenge of walking, cycling or skating 207 miles since lockdown began. She was missing seeing her cousins who live 207 miles away so decided to walk, cycle or skate the distance instead. She then set up a just giving page, only expecting to raise a small amount of money and ended up raising over £650 with donations still coming in. In the end she actually did 235miles!
The exemplary pupil is supporting three local charities by giving : £300 to Cliffe animal rescue, £200 to Sheffield Greyhound trust and £150 to a lady in Penistone who rescues Hedgehogs Watermeadow Hedgehog rescue. Everyone at her school is super proud of her. Headteacher Louise Jones at Deepcar St John's told Look Local “Elle is a very socially responsible member of our school. She has a thoughtful and caring nature and should be very proud of her achievement. I know her parents, family and the whole school community are very proud of her. Well done Elle!”

‘Storrs Henge’ land sculpture will ensure community spirit lives on During national lockdowns Andrew ‘Stoneface’ Vickers realised no one could hear him clapping for the NHS, down in Storrs Wood, Sheffield, so he set about thanking them in a way only he knew how – he started carving. Ten months on - and with hope that the tide is finally turning against Covid – the true significance of a growing number of heart-shaped sculptures that have been appearing in and around Sheffield can finally be revealed. The carvings mark the outer limits of what’s set to be the North of England’s largest legacy to the pandemic – a sculpture trail that stretches over five miles and a towering ‘Storrs Henge’ stone circle as its centre piece. The stone circle will be located high on the banks of Stannington’s Storrs Wood where Andrew ‘Stoneface’ Vickers spent his time living and working
in isolation for the duration of the various lockdowns. Visible from miles around, it will comprise nine towering eight-foot high stones – each one hand carved to tell an individual story that celebrates the spirit of community that has enabled so many to endure the difficult times over the past twelve months. The stones will be configured within the shape of an eye to symbolise the spirit of community and the fact there’s always someone watching over you. The attraction is set to accommodate thousands of visitors per year. Andrew ‘Stoneface’ Vickers said: “Over the months of isolation the incredible stories of community spirit resonated more and more and the ‘Storrs Henge’ project started to form.
plate and to look to the future. This land sculpture will truly symbolise the strength of humanity that has helped us get through this unprecedented period.” The stone circle will be flanked by oak trees grown from acorns from Storrs Wood. Rowan trees – known as the ‘tree of life’ since ancient times – will be sited at the entrance and exit. The project would normally have been funded by the Friends of Stoneface Creative events programme but, because the pandemic forced all events to be cancelled, a GoFundMe page has been set to up raise money Over £10,000 has already been raised to fund the £20,000 project. Donations can be made via: http://gofund.me/70b481d1

Climate emergency to set up advice centre ‘Tackling the Climate Emergency in Penistone and Stocksbridge’ Over 20 people attended the second of a series of Zoom events, ‘Tackling the Climate Emergency in Penistone and Stocksbridge’ last Sunday, 28th March. Organisations participating in the series include Penistone and Stocksbridge Constituency Labour Party, Green New Deal, Build Back Better, ACORN Sheffield, Upper Don Renewable Energy Ltd, Bullhouse Mill, Barnsley TUC, Don Valley Railway, Nurses United, Better Buses Campaign,Youth Climate Strikers and Tomson Consulting. Fran Postlethwaite from the Better Buses Campaign, updated us since her last talk about the report on the National Bus Strategy which explains how deregulation has failed. She noted that Manchester buses are being taken into Manchester City’s control and told us about "Every Village, Every Hour" - a report by Campaign for the Protection of Rural England and other groups showing the costings for such a scheme. Details and a petition are on their site.
Chris Bell from Don Valley Railway went through the history of their start up in 2004 and current needs for better freight and passenger service on this and the surrounding rail network. This included the difficulties of funding, various feasibility studies including how that might fit with the tram network, different energy sources such as brown, blue or green hydrogen powered trains, electrification, creating connections along the line and beyond as well as the necessary bus links. Current Northern Powerhouse rail plans miss our area, bypassing a lot of South Yorkshire.
bic digesters; a sealed tank of organic material where bacteria produce heat and methane. Methane is then used to make electricity. The waste matter at the end of the digester process is used as fertiliser. Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham use their collected organic waste like this. These digesters means the organic material from farmer’s field or green bin collections that would normally be left to rot, can produce electricity.
Barry Tylee from Upper Don Renewable Energy gave a detailed talk about renewable energy giving examples of heat pumps, photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, hydro schemes, battery storage, anaerobic digestors and biomass systems. The flooded mining galleries under Stocksbridge would be a huge source of energy for heat pumps.

Recommended actions from the breakout groups were : • lobbying for the National Bus Strategy
• ensure transport access for the disabled • setting up one or more advice centres to help people change from gas to electricsystems A small group agreed to work on planning and setting up an advice centre. Bikers attended to by Mountain Rescue The Woodhead Mountain Rescue team were called upon twice by Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust to assist with two injured mountain bikers, on Sunday 4 April. The first call came through at 12:46hrs to attend to a 32-year-old gentleman in Wharncliffe Woods. The gentleman had taken a ‘nasty’ fall from his mountain bike sustaining a suspected neck and back injury as well as a head injury. Team members were soon on scene with paramedics and able to provide crucial casualty care. Pain relief was administered before being carefully packaged into a vacuum mattress and placed on the teams stretcher to be carried off. Just over half an hour later after the stand down from the first callout, the team was called upon again by Yorkshire Ambulance Service at 15:39hrs where a 16-year-old male had taken a tumble from his mountain bike in Grenoside Woods. Once team members were on scene, they were able to assess the young male and found that he had suffered only minor injuries. Thankfully, the young male was in good spirits and was able to walk off to meet a relative who was able to take him to the hospital.

Countdown to more stores opening at Fox Valley The team at Fox Valley in north Sheffield are preparing for more of the centres stores and businesses to reopen from next Monday. (April 12th)
The centre’s Snap Fitness gym will also open its doors to members once again and hair and nail salons can once again operate their businesses.
The centre’s key essential retailers have traded through the third national lockdown – including Iceland, Aldi, Boots, Home Bargains, John Crawshaw Butchers and Bridge Bakery.
It’s hoped that restaurants and cafes will open to indoor diners from May 17th. In the meantime customers will be able to sit outside under the rule of six or the new two households rule at Pontis Italian Kitchen, McGilveray's and Zorro Lounge, with additional outdoor seating being introduced to allow for more people to enjoy the restaurants.
The centre’s weekly market and monthly Farmers’ Market has also traded with a line-up of essential traders, proving a popular way for local people to shop safely whilst supporting independent businesses. And on Monday (April 12th) the lockdown easing will see more of the centre’s stores opening the doors to their customers for the first time since January. Non-essential stores will be permitted to reopen to shoppers as well as gyms, hairdressers and beauty and nail salons. Businesses including Sandersons Boutique Department Store, Sports Direct, Card Factory, Seasalt and JoJo Maman Bebe will re-open.
Tenant liaison executive at Fox Valley Claire Reynolds said: “We have been working closely with all our stores and businesses here at the centre to ensure a smooth return to trading. “We are really looking forward to welcoming more of our stores back and of course our loyal customers. We would ask our customers to check opening times before planning their trip.” To check store opening times at Fox Valley visit www.foxvalleysheffield.co.uk and visit the stores page which will be regularly updated.

3\4\21 Dear Look Local Anyone walking around Stocksbridge will have noticed the increase in both fly tipping and littering. The fly tipping is on an industrial scale but walkers can and are doing something about littering by taking a bag when they go out. But why should they when they didn’t throw it? I think the answer is that we are all part of the society led by governments, which for over a decade have promoted every man for himself, and that cooperation and regulation are our enemies while slashing the budget of councils tasked with clearing up. The same council which used to be able to fund youth and community work, promoting values beyond money making. This spring fill bags on walks, and vote for better government in the local election.

However, as voting in store has closed due to social distancing measures, each selected charity will instead receive an increased donation of £500 to help those whose usual fundraising efforts may have been impacted by the pandemic.

Zest, a community enterprise delivering high quality and responsive services to local people. Julie Wood, secretary of Chapeltown Silver Prize Band, said: “The band is delighted to have received a donation of £500 from Jack’s Supermarket as part of the Jack’s Supports Scheme. Due to the pandemic and the cancellation of most events in 2020, the band lost most of its income. This donation will help towards the renewal of insurance and will assist the band enormously until performances can recommence and income returns. The band would like to thank Jack’s Supermarket and their staff for their generosity and support, it really is appreciated during these challenging times.”
Daniel Saragea, store manager of Jack’s Sheffield, said: “The Jack’s Supports scheme has been running for a while now and it’s important to everyone at Jack’s to be able to give back to the local community who have always been so kind to us. As charity fundraising has been massively affected by the pandemic, we are delighted that we are able to offer more support to organisations than ever before. “We strongly recommended anyone who’s considering applying for the next round to definitely get involved, we want to support as many local charities as possible, especially during such difficult times.” To be considered for the next round of Jack’s Supports funding you can apply by visiting https://jackssupports.org.uk/.

chelin-starred restaurant in France before working at La Tante Claire, Le Gavroche, Sartoria, Brasserie Roux and Galvin at Windows in London. He also spoke to students about the production of TV show First Dates and what it is truly like to work with Gordon Ramsay and Gino D'Acampo on ITV’s Gordon, Gino and Fred: Road Trip. Louis Millthorpe, a Level 2 Culinary Skills student, said: “I enjoyed listening to Fred talk about his overall life experience and the story he told about working in various roles in the hospitality industry. Having listened to Fred’s feedback I am determined to succeed in the industry and become a successful chef.”
Channel 4’s First Dates star, Fred Sirieix, talked to Catering and Hospitality students at Barnsley College about his extensive career in hospitality and television. As an inspirational speaker, Fred spoke virtually to students about his career path and gave tips on being successful within the competitive industry. Students took the opportunity to ask Fred questions related to hospitality, career advice and working in television.
Martyn Hollingsworth, Catering and Hospitality Curriculum Leader at Barnsley College, added: “We are really grateful to Fred for giving up his time to speak to us, he was motivational and gave some brilliant advice to our students. “The College is committed to transforming the lives of all its students and we aim to provide the highest quality provision possible. This helps to raise our students’ aspirations and provide opportunities for them to achieve their full potential.” For more information about our Catering and Hospitality courses visit www.barnsley.ac.uk/candh or email info@barnsley.ac.uk
Fred started the talk by sharing how his hospitality journey began by working front-of-house in a Mi-
New captain looking forward to season which was planned for the cancelled 2020 season.
He said: “There’s a lot of experience at Sheffield with riders who can score big points and obviously I’ve ridden for them before so I know what to expect.
KYLE Howarth is the Sheffield captain for the new season which starts in April. The Manchester-born racer won the Championship with Tigers in 2017 and has stayed with the club for their move into the top flight. He’s currently in training ready for the new campaign with a Tigers side which looks very different to that
“When you look at the team it’s a strong one, with bringing Batch (Troy Batchelor) and Adam (Ellis) in, Sedgy (Justin Sedgmen) coming back and then we have James Wright with lots of experience, which is great, and also Josh Bates at reserve who can really bang points in at Sheffield. “There’s no reason why this team can’t be pushing for a semi-final or final spot for sure, but obviously we know what can happen in speedway! “I do feel Sheffield have put a great team together, and for me it’s going
With the Golf Club finally open for action, Stocksbridge Golf Club has managed to squeeze 7 club competitions over 8 days. A sure sign that the members were very keen for some golfing action after the three month Lockdown closure and the weather certainly helped, well at least until Easter Sunday. Members also had the first opportunity to play with the new World Golf Handicap system and there were a few scratching their heads at the start of their rounds trying to work it out! The first competition was on 29 March, with Roger Broad, the Club Professional, setting up a “Welcome Back” Stableford and it was one of the Lady members, Liana O’Sullivan who showed the Gents how to play the game. Liana, playing off a low handicap of 6, won the competition comfortably with 40 points. Her round included 4 birdies and her card included the best score on 7 of the 18 holes. Jack Carnall (7) was a distant second with 35 points and Shaun Stapleton (20), pipped Liana’s brother Liam (2) to third place with 34 points, but a better back 9 on countback. Monday’s are usually the quietest day of the week but the first day back competition saw close to 50 members playing. April Fool’s Day was no joking matter for the Mid-Week Stableford, with 23 members participating. Luke Wilson (25) won with a highly creditable 40 points, closely followed by Richard Shepherd (10) on 39 points. Ben Stringer (4) was third with 38 points, a round that included back to back birdies on the difficult 11th and 12th holes. Good Friday saw plenty of members taking advantage of some chilly but bright conditions to play the Pro’s Prize. Shaun Stapleton (20) won with 20 points in a round that was very consistent considering his relatively high handicap. Brian Dobb (17) was second with 35 points and George Grimmer (14) was third with 34 points.
Saturday 3 April saw the last of the seasons truncated Winter Cup, played to a Stableford format. Brian Dodd (17) won with 40 points. Brian started his round well with a birdie 3 on the first hole and maintained good form for the remaining 17 holes. Jay Whittaker (18) was second with 39 points and Pete Westhead (10) was third with 37 points. Andrew Finney (1) had the same score as Pete, but lost on countback over the last 9 holes. Given Andrew’s very low handicap it was perhaps not surprising that his round included 5 birdies. He is well on track to to be an exciting year to look forward being a scratch golfer this season, no pressure Andrew! to. Easter Sunday was cold, very windy but sunny and the Ladies section “They’ve done really well to put the played their first competition of the year. Helen Moffett, the Ladies’ team together like they have with the Captain, hosted an Easter Flag Competition. The Stableford format changes forced upon them.” competition was won by Margaret Pearson, playing off a 28 handicap. TruPlant Tigers co-promoter Damien Margaret scored 30 points, beating Terri Moffatt (35) into second place Bates believes Howarth is the ideal with a score of 28 points. Sue Clegg (45) was third with 26 points. choice as skipper. The Gents also played a Pro’s Prize competition on Easter Sunday and
Shaun Stapleton (20) completed his second win of the Bank Holiday weekend. With 41 points from the same handicap for his Good Friday win it’s looking likely that the new World Handicap System will soon be knocking some shots off his allowance. Steve Clayton (12) was second with 39 points and Dave Buxton (8) was third with 38 points. Pete “He’s a character who is good for Mannion (18) and Jay Whittaker (18) also had 38 points but lost out team spirit. He’s determined and he’ll on countback from the last 9 holes. urge the rest of the team on to try and It wouldn’t be Stocksbridge without a bit of snow and Easter Monday achieve big things. started with a flurry of the white stuff along with bitingly cold winds “The team looks strong, but it’s all dropping the temperature well below freezing. That doesn’t put golfabout what happens out there on the ers from Stocksbridge off and plenty turned out for an Easter Montrack and not what looks good on pa- day Pro’s Challenge. Stuart Marsh (19) won with a highly creditable per.” 37 points, with Lee Hydes (9) one point behind. Martin Bye (10) was third with 33 points. “He’s been with the club a while now and knows us all well,” he said. “He’s popular with the supporters and he is getting better as a rider.
