“On behalf of Sheffield City Council and the people of Sheffield, I wish to express our great sadness at the news of the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. “In his early adult years, The Duke of Edinburgh served in the Royal Navy and was on active service throughout the Second World War. At the end of the war, he was on the destroyer HMS WHELP which was present in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese signed the surrender on 2 September 1945. Having married the then Princess Elizabeth, The Duke of Edinburgh went on to provide enormous support to her as Queen, often through times of major challenge for the country. Aside from his
loyalty to the Monarch, many of us will remember him for creating The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, a youth awards programme founded in 1956, that has changed the lives of countless individuals. “I recall fondly the enthusiastic welcome given by the people of Sheffield when he accompanied the Queen on a visit to the city in April 2015. It will be an event that many will remember for the rest of our lives and will remain a significant day in Sheffield’s history. “As a mark of our respect, flags will be flown at half-mast on civic buildings. Books of Condolence will be made available for people to sign online until the day after the funeral. Floral tributes may be laid at the back of the fountains in the Peace Gardens in the city centre.”

‘I MAY BE GONE A WHILE’
Penistone man sets off on 7000 mile coastal walk After a gruelling day of 13.3 miles walking, Jim Morton, age 60, sat down for a rest in Crowden on his way to the coast. As he prepared to put his feet up for the first day of many, walking, he realised he had no phone signal and had to trek a further 400 yards up a hill to get a phone signal and talk to Look Local. Jim has just begun an adventure of a lifetime in his quest to visit every lighthouse on mainland Great Britain, by foot! A dream he has held ever since his father back in 1967 bought a young ‘Jim’ a Road Map of Great Britain. To this day Jim has always wanted to visit every lighthouse on mainland Britain. On Monday 12 April 2021, his dream started to haze into reality from Julie’s Cafe in Penistone, where the sun shone on a bright but crisp early spring morning. “ My Dad bought me the AA road map back in 1967 and I’ve always wanted
to be the first person to walk to every mainland lighthouse, unfortunately I was beaten to it, but I’ve never lost the desire to fulfil my dream - i’ve just had to wait 53 years” Formerly of Hillsborough and now of Cubley, Penistone. Jim will be accompanied by his wife Susan and their two ‘Westie’s’ Shauna and Maisie, intow in their campervan. “I’ve had to change my plans a little with all the restrictions, I always wanted to start and finish in Yorkshire. My original plan was to start on the Humber Bridge and walk across to Lincolnshire, but the bridge is closed to pedestrians due to the high number of suicides there.” “Changing the route means I’ll be walking through Scotland in the summer where many of the lighthouses are remote so I’ll be going alone and camping” His quest will take approximately 7,000-7,500 miles and between 12-15 months.
Liverpool is Jim’s first destination before heading north up towards Scotland. You can follow Jim’s progress on facebook and instagram i may be gone a while with Jim hoping to raise £50,000 for Gurkha Welfare Trust. His minute by minute progress can be monitored using the Strava app. Only another 6976 miles to go!

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe and daughter Alice show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities as their father. They are now helping the successful window company build on the 43 years of trading.

SCHOOL UNIFORM SWAP SHOP LAUNCHED Ecclesfield Parish Council is supporting all families from across the Parish by launching a school uniform swap shop for children’s school uniform where parents can pick up items for free. Ecclesfield Parish Council work hard to look after all members of the Parish including the youngest residents and have launched the school uniform swap shop. Members of the community have responded in mass with donations and the uniform items available are suitable for all schools in the Parish area. If you have a child who attends any of the schools within the Parish contact Emma at Ecclesfield Parish Council to see what they have available – emmamainwaring@ecclesfield-pc. gov.uk The uniform available for collection is for children from 3 to 16 years. Some is generic and could be worn at any school and some is branded with the logos from schools across the Parish. All items have been professionally laundered and are ready to go, some are worn but in good condition, some are nearly new and we even have brand new items still with tags. This is open to all the Parish community - to help as many families as possible. There are no awkward questions, or forms to fill in. Any chosen items are bundled together and left in the foyer of the Council building to be collected contact free. This project will have an allround benefit to the community, whether that be environmentally speaking through, ‘Reuse - Recycle – Reduce’ as well as financially for families who need help now more than ever.
New bus service Miriam Cates MP is delighted that funding has been secured to make the Number 26 bus between Penistone and Stocksbridge a permanent daily service. The route will provide an hourly connection to both towns from Thurgoland, Crane Moor, Cubley and Wortley, offering a vital public transport link to people in some of our most isolated villages. Miriam Cates MP said “I've been working with the Thurgoland Parish Council Public

Transport Working Group on this project for nearly two years, and it's a credit to their hard work and dedication that we've now reached this point. Members of the group have campaigned tirelessly to raise the issue of rural public transport and the need to provide better connectivity to our villages.” She continued “Rural public transport is so important to our communities. We need reliable bus services to connect people with jobs, health care and services, and without it these villages will be unsustainable. The new bus will be a lifeline for local people, helping to reduce loneliness and isolation.” The bus will launch its new hourly service on the 4th May, and is a fully registered service that accepts concessionary passes. More details including the full timetable will be published on the SPCT website: www.southpenninect.co.uk/

Disabled woman ‘ignored by doctors’ in hospital where she died
A disabled woman, writes the BBC, who died when she went to hospital for a routine eye operation was "ignored" by doctors as she tried to communicate, an inquest heard.
Mrs Booth said she and her husband became increasingly concerned their daughter was not eating in hospital. "She never had anything to eat all the time she was in the hospital," she said.
Laura Booth, 21, died in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, in October 2016.
"All Laura lived on was her rice milk and blackcurrant juice.
Her mum Patricia Booth told the hearing at Sheffield Town Hall her "kind and caring" daughter stopped eating after she was admitted to hospital.
"We kept telling the doctors 'this isn't right, she can't survive on no food'." She told the hearing she and Mr Booth had given up on having children after failed IVF attempts and Miss Booth was "our little miracle".
Miss Booth was diagnosed with partial trisomy 13 at birth.
Hello! What a week this is, after such a long difficult winter. Slowly but surely, it finally seems like we are turning a corner in this pandemic. How fantastic is it to see the country moving back to some sort of normality? Shops opening again, people’s businesses starting back, pubs, gyms and hairdressers all opening their doors. I managed to get to the gym on Monday and it felt great. Now, I just need to find a pub and a barber. Whatever you have been looking forward to, make sure to do it and treat yourself. After such a difficult period of time it is important to reward yourself for getting through such a challenging year. Like you need telling twice. This month I am proud to say I have just published my second book – ‘An Anxiety Book for Teens’. Following on from the success of my first book ‘Help with Anxiety’, I wanted to write one for the younger generation. Sadly, anxiety and mental health problems are on the rise amongst young people. In 2020 from April to December over 370,000 under 18’s were referred for mental health help. This is the highest figure ever recorded and was an increase of 28% on the previous year.
She had a number of different life-limiting complications, including learning disabilities. Mrs Booth, from Sheffield, said her daughter could communicate to some extent and could make her family understand her. She said she would reach her hands out to doctors but they did not respond to her.
"They never discussed anything with Laura. They just ignored her. She couldn't speak but she could understand everything. "They never gave her a chance." Mrs Booth said: "It just upset Laura that the doctors ignored her."
"She was a really, really lovely, kind, caring girl," she said. "If me or her dad was poorly, she would care for us." "When she died, part of us died too," she said. The inquest at Sheffield Town Hall is due to last up to three weeks.
CELEBRITY CHEF SERVES EXPERTISE TO STUDENTS Kitchen, Saturday Morning with James Martin and his own shows A Taste of Britain and My Life on a Plate with the BBC. Oliver Lee, a Level 2 Culinary Skills student, said: “The talk with Brian Turner was amazing, he told us all about the catering and hospitality industry. I learned that if someone says you can’t be a head chef or a Michelin star chef; and it’s your dream, go and prove them wrong.”
It is believed that around 1 in 5 young people may experience a mental health problem in any given year but sadly only a quarter of these receive the support they so desperately need. I feel the over consumption of media and social media are playing a key role but there are also many other factors too. This new book explores in a teen friendly way, what anxiety is, how best to manage it and how to help improve a young person’s mental health. It is written in an easy-to-read A-Z format where A is for Anxiety, B is for Breathing, C is for Causes and so on. It is packed with tips and activities to try and hopefully it helps lots of young people. If there is a young person in your life who you think may be struggling, then make sure to support them and talk to them about their feelings. Even if they appear okay, it is always worth speaking with them about their thoughts and feelings and letting them know you are available to talk if they ever need to. Easier said than done with teenagers, right? But you can only try, and I am sure they will appreciate it deep down. You’ll have a lot of wisdom to pass on and even if they only listen to 10% of it, they will be more educated and all the better for it. I hope you have a great week, month, and year ahead. Here’s to socialising and enjoying the times we have missed out on for far too long. Please note: This article is for educational purposes only and should not replace proper medical advice. If you are experiencing anxiety or any other mental health illness, then please speak to your doctor.
Martyn Hollingsworth, Catering and Hospitality Curriculum Leader at Barnsley College, added: “It was great to have Brian Turner talking to our students, inspiring their early journey into a career in the catering industry.
President of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts and TV personality Brian Turner CBE spoke virtually to Catering and Hospitality students at Barnsley College about the motivation, resilience and commitment needed to become a renowned chef.
“The College is committed to transforming the lives of all its students and we aim to provide the highest quality provision possible, including industry talks like this one. This helps to raise our students’ aspirations and provide opportunities for them to achieve and Claridge’s. Your Letters Citizens making history in Sheffield on May 6th 2021 A council that has to do what we say, is that really possible? Last year, due to COVID-19, the local elections were cancelled but the Government has now allowed local elections to be held again on Thursday May 6th 2021.

Your Letters Negative campaigning Dear Editor, I recently received a leaflet hastily bundled through the door alongside other bits of paper from one of the candidates at this year's election. I have to say I wasn't much impressed with what I saw...I've always been a bit of a floating voter and wouldn't say I'm particularly wedded to any one party, but I don't like negative campaigning and personal attacks, which seem to make up the majority of this candidates leaflet. I'm not yet sure who I'm going to vote for, but I hope to be able to cast my vote on the basis of which candidate is able to set out a positive plan, and work hard to make it happen. I hope other people do too...there is quite enough pessimism and negativity around without people using that as a campaigning tool. Yours hoping for something better and brighter
This time the elections here in Sheffield will historic one way or another; not because of Covid, but because alongside the usual Local Councillor and the Police & Crime Commissioner ballots there will be the Sheffield People’s Referendum ballot asking you to choose how you would like Sheffield City Council to be run. The result of this is legally binding and could force the council to operate differently for the next 10 years, so it’s rather important because the outcome will affect every Sheffield resident and shape the city for a long time to come. How did the referendum come about?

picked 9 cabinet members, the other 74 elected councillors can easily be side-lined. What this means is that 74 do not have a meaningful role in decision-making and so cannot represent us like many believed they could when they voted for them. (Oh and by the way, the leader isn’t really chosen by all elected councillors like the first part of the referendum question suggests; only the ruling group get to ‘choose’ then Full Council has to ratify that choice. Would it make any difference if opposition councillors disagreed? With the tribal politics we have in Sheffield…highly unlikely.) In the alternative, the Modern Committee System that IOC! has been campaigning for, all 84 councillors can be involved in decision-making through smaller themed committees, fully enabling councillors to represent their voters in high level decisions. This, campaigners believe, and other councils have found, will be the first steppingstone to better local democracy. Where crossparty collaboration can exist, thus enabling better scrutiny and transparency and an environment where citizens are listened to before council decisions are made and instead of being informed after the fact.

This referendum is only happening in Sheffield and that’s because local campaigners, coordinated by a non-political community group called It’s Our City!, submitted a successful petition in 2019 with over 26,000 signatures on it calling for Sheffielders to be heard. It is the largest petition of its type submitted in the UK to date. Petitions are usually toothless in Sheffield, but this particular petition had clout under the 2011 Localism Act and that has forced the council to hold the referendum at the next local elections, like it or not.
How can Sheffielders vote?
Cold Weather and snow for Stocksbridge golfers They say mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the mid-day sun, but for golfers in Stocksbridge it’s usually the cold that brings them out in big numbers. Since the Easter weekend the weather has been very cold with winds blowing from the north and snow falling over the weekend (see picture), but that didn’t dampen the Club’s members from getting out and playing. The first competition of the week was the Dragons’ Society Summer Cup on 7th April and many of the Section’s members
were asking what happened to the warmth associated with the name of the event. John Sawdon (20) came out on top in the Stableford format with 37 points in a very steady and consistent round. Bill Boucher (28) was just behind on 35 points and Dennis Haley (13) was third with 34 points. 30 section members braved the cold weather to compete.
took part. Overall winner was Luke Wilson (25) from Division2. Luke scored a net 64 in some very tricky conditions and in particular his back 9 score was highly creditable. Craig Brailsford (15), also from Division2 was second with a net 66. Liam O’Sullivan (2) was overall third with a net 69. Liam also had the best gross score of the competition with a score of 72.
Thursday 8th April saw the first Midweek Medal competition of the season and nearly 40 members
The Ladies Section played their first Front 9 Stableford competition on the 9th April, with Heather
Evans (17) the Ladies Vice Captain, winning with an excellent 13 points in very cold and windy conditions. Margaret Pearson (15) was second with 12 points and Kath Busfield (13) third with 11 points. Saturday 10th April saw even colder conditions and plenty of snow fell in the morning, but this didn’t put off over 60 members competing in the Stableford Shield Doubles Competition. Thankfully the wind speeds had dropped but it was bitterly cold and it took some very hardy golfers
to see their rounds through, even though pairs were only allowed 85% of their combined handicaps. The runaway winners were Matt Luttrell and Paul Langham with an amazing 47 points and they certainly played really well as a pairing, covering each other on every hole to score heavily. 5 points behind on 42 points were Pete Finney and Jay Whittaker with 42 points. Richard Hastings and Phil Smith also scored 42 points but lost out to Pete and Jay on countback

LISTENING CARING GETTING THINGS DONE
Dear Resident,
I’ve spoken to many people who simply want councillors who will listen, work hard, and get things done for local people. The Lib Dem team will stand up for the community, protect green spaces, support local businesses, and fight for better public transport. On 6th May, we have a chance to put our area first by backing the Local Liberal Democrat team.

Dennison lobbed the goalkeeper from distance.
Dennison, who was a handful throughout, then won a penalty early in the second half which was coolly slotted home by Denham Saxton (pictured). Legion looked comfortable until conceding two goals in two minutes. This handed Wadsley Jack the initiative, however Ben Stringer delivered the goods with a left footed effort to restore the lead. Legion keeper Adam Fox was forced off with a knee injury and was replaced by stand in Liam Wildsmith. Wildsmith made a number of smart saves and looked to have helped secure 3 points until the final moments when a Wadsley free kick found the top corner from the edge of the box

Steels pitch Fixture makes the confirmed for grade Rugby club Meanwhile, having broken their initial target of £500 raised for the ‘Run Nation Hadrian’s Wall ultra-run for 2021’, the Rugby Club runners are on their way to their next goal of £1000 for the Club & ‘Oliver’s Army‘ charity, supporting mental health awareness, in memory of the late Oliver Sinclair.
In an about turn for Stocksbridge Rugby club, they have agreed to travel the short distance over to visit local rivals Barnsley RUFC on Friday 30th April for a friendly fixture under the floodlights. This will be the first opportunity for both clubs to have a run out since the easing of lockdown, & Stocksbridge Director of Rugby Andy Tyers sees it as a bonus, ‘We had all but given up on the chance to pay again this side of September’, he said ’however, this game gives us the chance to get together, brush some cobwebs off and have a run out. Something I’m sure the lads are massively looking forward to’.
To help preparations, Stocksbridge Rugby will hold morning training sessions on Saturday’s 17th & 24th of this Month, with a Captain’s run on 28th. ‘most of the lads have maintained their fitness with their charity running efforts, so we will focus on our game play options & shape’, said Tyers. The club will be hoping to unveil an exciting new signing for this game, Ryan Healy previously with Welsh Premier league side Dinis Powys has recently moved to the area & is keen to get back involved in the game. An experienced outside back, he will add a bit of experience aswell as flair & guile to the Stocksbridge back line.
Stocksbridge Rugby & Oliver’s Army remain very grateful to the public & local business communities for your generous support & donations, particularly given the current climate. To make a donation, please go to the JustGiving page; www.justgiving. com/crowdfunding/oliversarmyandstocksbridge . Runner, & Line Out champion Sam Whitaker is enjoying the opportunity to improve his fitness & raise money, ‘it’s a worthwhile cause to raise funds for, & it’s good for us, to keep meeting up as we pound the miles, encouraging each other along the way’ he said, before adding ‘I’ll be glad when I’ve finished tho’ !’
After a recent FA ground grading visit, Stocksbridge Park Steels are pleased to recieve a Grade C rating. The FA inspector has recomended the grade after a visit to Eco-Power Environmental Stadium, home of The Steels on 19th March.
In a letter from the FA; “Following the inspection I am pleased to confirm that your ground fully complied with Grade C and that we are recommending to the FA Technical Panel that you be awarded that Grade at their next meeting due to be held shortly”
