A local resident in Penistone posted this on social media earlier this week... Photos of Bower Dell, Oxspring Had to clean up first before we could spend a relaxing hour in our beautiful countryside with our dog ...she just loves swimming in the river...and we love to see her having fun, but this spoilt it for us. 2 Grills still full with sausages and bacon left overnight. Summer came early to residents of a care home in Stocksbridge, this week. As part of well-being month at Belmont Nursing Home, residents got to enjoy the outside and a bit of independence thanks to a visit from the ‘ice-cream van’. Over 50 ice creams were enjoyed on a warm spring afternoon.

M1 CRASH CAUSES DELAYS For anyone using the M1 south just before Meadowhall on Saturday, this was the cause of your hold up – a spectacular but thankfully only minor injury collision between an HGV and trailer and what used to be a caravan. South Yorkshire Police said “We appreciate that this would have caused a lot of inconvenience to people and we know that the tailbacks were quite significant, so we would like to offer some thanks and some apologies.
Highways England colleagues to deal with the aftermath. We would also like to thank the vast majority of people that complied with the red “X”s closing lanes. Those big red “X”s are used to keep those involved safe and to allow us to try and sweep up without dodging oncoming traffic.” Unfortunately not all motorists complied with lane closure signs, making the cleanup operation longer than needed.
First of all, thanks to the vast majority of motorists who waited patiently for us and our

FORMER MP FOUND TO HAVE BREACHED SEXUAL MISCONDUCT POLICY Jared O'Mara stood down at the 2019 General Election. A former Sheffield MP has been found to have breached Parliament's sexual misconduct policy, after an employee complained of receiving inappropriate messages.
Jared O'Mara showed a "lack of remorse'' and a "refusal to engage'' over the allegation, a committee of the Commons Independent Expert Panel said in a report published on Monday. Ex-employee Jennifer Barnes raised a formal complaint after saying she received inappro-
priate messages and approaches from the then MP in July 2019. Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards Kathryn Stone concluded that his behaviour breached the sexual misconduct policy and "amounted to an abuse of power'', according to the report.

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe and daughter Alice show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities as their father. They are now helping the successful window company build on the 43 years of trading.

Peak District National Park Foundation celebrates birthday with 70kfor70 success It was launched to mark the 70th anniversary of the Peak District National Park – with an ambitious plan to raise £70,000 in its inaugural fundraising project.
Now the Peak District National Park Foundation is celebrating not only reaching, but almost doubling its target – with £130,000 raised through its #70kfor70 campaign. Ahead of the Peak District’s 70th birthday as the UK’s first national park on 17th April, the money raised is already supporting a range of conservation and engagement projects. These include Moors for the Future moorland restoration, conservation work on the Monsal and Tissington trails, woodland restructuring at Stanage North Lees to improve bird habitats, conservation work in the South West Peak and access work with Miles Without Stiles. The Foundation has also kitted out Junior Rangers and supported Peak District Mosaic to help make the National Park more accessible to BAME communities. It has funded Fit for Work, which helps offenders on licence to develop conservation skills.
And it has supported Year of Green Action community grants and Ride Sheffield/Peak District MTB volunteer conservation projects.
Some of these projects will be showcased in the Foundation’s #70kfor70 video – #70kfor70 from the Peak District National Park Foundation, celebrating 70 years of the Peak District - YouTube - which will premiere across its social media channels on 16th April. Foundation chair, Jen Lowthrop, said: “We’re thrilled with the amazing support we’ve received throughout our #70kfor70 campaign. We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped us reach our first major fundraising target and more. “The Peak District National Park’s 70th birthday is a time to reflect and there’s lots to celebrate. Without the protections of a National Park designation, the Peak District would look very different but there is still much more to do. Our National Park is facing massive challenges, but with your help we can help combat climate change, support nature recovery, maintain our heritage and habitats
and ensure the National Park is accessible and welcoming to all. “The things we do today will help our National Park thrive tomorrow, and for many generations to come. We have a long list of conservation, nature recovery and engagement projects which need funding. We can all help by being #PeakDistrictProud, enjoying the National Park responsibly and by donating. “From monthly donations to becoming a Peak Partner business to taking on a fundraising challenge, together we can realise our vision of a National Park enjoyed and conserved by everyone. #70kfor70 is just the start. As more people discover the Peak District, we need to inspire them to Explore, Enjoy and Support their national park – to leave it in a better condition for future generations.” #70kfor70 was just the start for the Peak District National Park Foundation. We have ambitious plans for future fundraising to care for the National Park and to make it accessible for all. Visit https://www.peakdistrictfoundation.org.uk/support-us/ to find out how you can help.

Covid testing for Everyone in England is now eligible for free sure we can continue to ease our way out of lockdown. I would also encourage people to download the Covid-19 NHS app so that as many people as possible can be contacted if they have been in contact with someone who has the virus. In Sheffield, our local track and trace team are successfully contacting 95% of all people who have tested positive with Covid, which is reassuring for all of us.” While a positive LFD test is a red light, a negative test is not a green light. No test is 100% accurate so everyone must continue to play their part in preventing the spread of the virus by following the hands, face, space guidance. People should still get tested even if they have had a Covid vaccination as they may still be able to pass the virus on to others, even if they do not become ill themselves.
Everyone in England is now eligible for free, rapid Lateral Flow Device (LFD) tests to continue the fight against Covid. The LFD tests, which should be taken twice weekly, are for people who do not have symptoms and are designed to identify positive cases that would otherwise not have been found. They are easy to use and give results in 30 minutes. Anyone with Covid-19 symptoms must book a symptomatic test, also known as a PCR test, by calling 119 or booking online at www.nhs. uk/coronavirus and must self-isolate immediately. Those who get a positive LFD test must also book a PCR test within 48 hours to confirm the result.
As most of us know, about 1 in 3 people with Covid do not have symptoms but can still infect others so getting tested regularly is the only way to know if someone has the virus. If people test positive and self-isolate, it helps stop the virus spreading. Susan Hird, Consultant in Public Health in Sheffield, said: “As ever we’re asking people to test regularly so that we can keep this virus at bay. The opportunity to get free lateral flow tests at a number of locations across the city or to order them online now makes it so much easier for us to do this.
There are several ways to get an LFD test in Sheffield. Supervised rapid tests are available at The English Institute of Sport Sheffield (EISS) lateral flow test site on Coleridge Road, Sheffield S9 5DA. It’s open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and appointments can be booked at https://sheffieldbooking.sishost. co.uk/OnlineBookings/appointment.html. People can also collect test kits from this testing site without the need for an appointment and Sheffield employers with a workplace with less than 10 staff can pick them up on their behalf.
2 packs of 7 tests for home testing can also be collected from a local pharmacy or test site, "Getting into the habit of twice-weekly rapid or people can order online to get a pack of LFD testing means that we can keep each tests sent to their home. other safe and, alongside the vaccine, en-
junior football teams receive help to get back playing Jack's Supermarket, on Kilner Way in Sheffield, welcomed back their local grassroots sports teams with a selection of healthy drinks and snacks to keep the team members energised during their first training sessions back. As part of the Government roadmap out of lockdown, outdoor grassroots sports were allowed to resume from Monday 29th March. This saw many children and teenagers across the country looking forward to the re-
turn of football training and the opportunity to play competitive games again. Hillsborough Pumas U16s and Abbey Lane JFC Panthers U9s collected the donations from Jack's on Monday 12th April. Jack's Supermarket sponsors local grassroots teams to provide a fun and safe environment to help kids stay active. Daniel Saragea, Store Manager of Jack's Sheffield, said: "We're committed to developing our
relationship with the local community in any way we can. We have sponsored football teams in Sheffield over the last few years, and these drinks and snacks are just a little extra something to keep the players energised and excited about being back on the pitch."
Those who do tests at home need to report their results online or on the phone. The instructions on how to do this are in each testing kit. Some employers and universities are also offering rapid tests so people can ask their employer or university about what is available to them. Those who attend or work at a school, college, or nursery can get rapid tests through their school, college or nursery. Primary school-age children and younger do not need to test. For every 1,000 rapid LFD tests carried out, less than one test will give a false positive result. Extensive clinical evaluation has been carried out on rapid LFD tests, which shows they are accurate and sensitive enough to be used in the community for screening and observation purposes. More detailed information about Coronavirus testing is available at www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid19/testing/ Financial support is available if people test positive with a PCR (symptomatic test) who need to self-isolate and are facing hardship. They may be eligible for a test and trace payment or support through the Local Assistance Scheme A self-isolation pack to help people to get through their period of isolation is also available here Our seven testing centre locations are here

The game is outdoors, completely contactless and players take part in their family groups or support bubbles, so has been approved by Public Health England as COVID safe. Participants are encouraged to walk, cycle, run, wheel or scoot as far as possible within the local area, with prizes of sports or book vouchers for the teams that clock up the highest number of miles. Beat the Street Sheffield is brought to you by Move More and Sheffield City Council. It is delivered by Intelligent Health, with funding from the National Lottery and Sport England, and local partners. Since it was founded, the game has been played by more than 1.2m people and has been adapted to ensure that it’s safe to play during the COVID-19 pandemic with the approval of Public Health England. Beat the Street Sheffield will be our biggest game to date and we hope that 50,000 local residents will take part. Players use a free card or fob which they hover over special sensors called “Beat Boxes” which will appear on lampposts around Sheffield. These are placed approximately half a mile apart and you simply hover your card or fob over it. It will beep and flash and will register your points!
Players can join a school or community team or you could help raise up to £500 for Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity by allocating your miles to the charity team. As well as encouraging people to get active, Beat the Street has been shown to get communities more engaged, less car-dependent and fitter which is vital in Sheffield’s recovery from COVID-19. More than 33,000 people played the Beat the Street game safely in various UK towns in autumn 2020 with many players reporting that it had a positive impact on their mental health at an anxious time.

New Archive for the History Society
The Stocksbridge & District History Society has had a busy year in spite of the lockdown not enabling it to have its regular monthly meetings and not being able to open its museum. One of its long term projects is coming to a satisfactory conclusion. For the last 4 years members of the society have filtering and sorting an archive bequeathed to them by the late Trevor Lodge, the Information Officer at SES, Corus et al. Trevor was a researcher and author of many articles relating to Stocksbridge Works and was a good friend to SDHS and many other history and heritage organisations. He had researched and compiled a definitive history of Samuel Fox & Co and the works, unfortunately this important manuscript never got published.
Greg Fell, director of Public Health in Sheffield, said: “We are incredibly excited to be bringing Beat the Street to Sheffield. We know that one of the best things people can do right now for their physical and mental health is to move more and to get out into green space where possible, and Beat the As part of his bequest, SDHS received his 8 Street really helps people do just that in a safe volume draft manuscript which is used for and enjoyable way. reference; his actual finished discs for the “Beat the Street is free and it’s open to every- printers seem to have been lost. one regardless of age, ability or background. More 32 boxes and 10 bags of photographs, docuinformation will shortly be available at www. ments and books! The society spent months beatthestreet.me/sheffield and on social me- sorting the load, contacting other local history organisations with material not deemed dia at @BTSSheffield relevant to Stocksbridge and then took the decision to digitise this archive to add to the
already substantial digital archive that is kept in the Stocksbridge Museum. The digitisation was an enormous task for the society and help was sought from the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership (SLLP) and Stocksbridge Town Council who were able to help with a small grant from the Community Grants Scheme. The grant enabled the society to purchase special book and document scanning equipment, essential for the project. Finally after 18 months of scanning by their volunteers Andrew and Elle, the digitisation is nearing completion , with over 12500 photographs and documents scanned, cropped, and being categorised. This unique archive, together with the material already in the society archive must be the most comprehensive collection of material and photographs, not only of Stocksbridge Works and Railway, but also life and people in the Little Don valley over the last 175 years. This archive will be available to the public to view, on the monitors, in the archive area in the museum in the Town Hall, when the lockdowns have finished and we can get back to the ‘new’ normality. Most of the photographs have no label of people and location in the works and the society would be pleased to have any information of names of people or places that someone might recognise. The society will be publishing a selection of photographs in the Look Local, in the coming months.

STOCKSBRIDGE SWIMMERS SHOW LEADERSHIP AWAY FROM THE POOL Stocksbridge Pentaqua swimmers used their lockdown time away from the pool productively. 6 Junior members of the club signed up to complete a Swim England Young Leader Development programme in their own time. Run over 3 sessions, the swimmers participated in Leadership, Coaching and Events modules which developed their ability to become better swimmers and coaches of the future as well as building their confidence and communication skills. This oversubscribed programme also enabled the members to build and develop relationships with swimmers from clubs around the North Eastern region.
The Zoom sessions were lead by regional development officers and provided both practical and theory based learning. The swimmers are now in the midst of completing leadership and coaching based assignments to prove the effectiveness of the zoom-based training and put their newly found knowledge and skills into practise. All the swimmers felt the communication skills will be useful away from the pool in normal life, as well as supporting the swimming skills of the younger members of the club and the coaching team.
dedication of the swimmers, giving up time to complete the course and support the club and keep swimming a priority whilst not being able to actually swim! He is looking forwards to the Young Leaders sharing their knowledge and skills with fellow swimmers and the coaches too! Stocksbridge Pentaqua always welcomes new swimmers- anyone can register interest via the website www. stocksbridgepentaqua.co.uk/join-us or contact the club at pentaqua.clubroom@gmail.com

Aussie ace Batchelor has made the move to Owlerton after Swindon pulled out of the 2021 season to allow stadium development work. The Tru Plant Tigers are set to open their doors to fans for the first time since 2019 under the government roadmap on Thursday May 20 against one of Batchelor’s former clubs Peterborough. But he wants to get some vital practice on his new home track before the Premiership starts. “Hopefully we can get together as a team and do some laps around Sheffield,” he said. “It’s a long time since I last rode there and I would like to get my set-up

There was a healthy turn out, & a couple of new faces who will add some pace and sparkle to the ‘Piggy’s’ back line. More sessions are planned for this coming Saturday & Wednesday 28th @ Coal Pit Lane. This weeks ‘top trainer’ award went to the pacey Callum Green for his enthusiasm & skill level shown ‘it’s good to be back’ said Green afterwards, adding ‘I’m looking forward to playing with the boys again after such a lengthy break’.
RBL began the second half brighter and were level after a well worked move saw debutant Mitch Savage set up Ben Stringer to score his second in two weeks. Rugby Club search for new skipper
Stocksbridge Rugby returned to training at the weekend as part of their preparations for their forthcoming clash at near neighbours Barnsley RUFC on Friday 30th April.
Shakey took the lead after ten minutes following a run down the right hand side. Neither side created many chances in the first in hot conditions. Ben Stringer saw his shot blocked after being played in by Denham Saxton, whilst skipper Jack Marlow shot wide from distance.

Meanwhile club skipper, Joe ‘Cockney’ Jones has informed the Chairman that he intends to stand down from
the role, along with current vice-captain Ricky James.
This means the club will look to appoint new leaders at the AGM in May, with centre Adam Roles-Middlehurst reportedly throwing his hat into the ring, he could be joined as vice-captain by former club supremo, & front rower Rhys Keenan. Jones has had a tough time, given the situation around Covid, & has not actually played a game during his tenancy ! He is relinquishing the captaincy to focus on his role developing the next wave of players for the club, as Coach of the U17’s. Club Chairman, Andy Bell paid tribute to Jones he told Look Local ‘My thanks go to Joe, I suppose he’s unbeaten however, he’s keen to concentrate his efforts on the Colts section, as they grow from our junior Piggy’s’.
The minis & the juniors are also restarting training on Sunday mornings at the club ground from 10.00am, all are welcome. The Rugby Club itself is set to re-open to customers on May 17th in line with government restrictions. With the Club’s charity runners nearing the end of their ‘Run Nation Hadrian’s Wall ultra-run for 2021’, the revised target of £1000 is now in sight. Both the Club & ‘Oliver’s Army‘ charity, supporting mental health awareness, in memory of the late Oliver Sinclair stand to benefit. Time is now running out to donate, so please go to the JustGiving page; www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ oliversarmyandstocksbridge . Whatever you donate is very much appreciated by all concerned.
Busy Week at the Golf Club
Glorious weather all week has been a big bonus for the avid golfers at Stocksbridge and there have been plenty of competitions to keep the members busy. The course is in magnificent condition for the time of year and is drawing many positive comments from members and visitors. To help as well, the clubhouse is also now able to serve drinks and meals on the patio to members and visitors who have played. With the good weather this has gone down very well and the good forecast for the next few days will hopefully keep the Club safe but busy. The Ladies Section played their second Front Nine competition on the 16 April, with Liana O’Sullivan playing off a revised handicap of 4, succeeding with 18 points. Her round included a mightily impressive birdie on the 7th, one of the most challenging holes on the course for all members. Bev Sykes (14) was second with 16 points, beating Margaret
Pearson (15) with the same score on countback.
The Ladies then competed on Sunday 18th April in the Yorkshire Ladies County Golf Association Qualifier, playing in the most difficult of golf formats, foursomes. Foursomes are played as pairs with players alternating shots and it is very easy to leave your partner in a difficult position if you play a poor shot. Liana had her second success of the weekend winning the qualifier with her Mum Hilja, the pair playing off a combined handicap of 15. Their net score of 70 gave them a comfortable victory, with Kath Busfield and Margaret Pearson (28) some way back with a net 73. Ann Whitfield and Bev Sykes (27) came in third with a net 77. The qualifiers for the YLCGA will play the next area round at Silkstone in July. The Dragons Section competed in the latest round of their Summer Cup. Martyn Bradwell (18) came out on
top with a steady 35 points. Sandy Murphy (12) and Mick Bellamy (20) both scored 33 points but Sandy came second on countback. It’s early days in the competition but John Sawdon, winner of the first round, heading the league table at the moment.
Thursday 15th April saw a good sized field play in the mid-week Stableford competition. Richard Moore (21) won on the day with an impressive 41 points, scoring consistently well on every hole. Martyn Bradwell (18) had a second good round in as many days, finishing second with 37 points. Jonathan Finlay (33) was third with 36 points, the same as Shaun Stapleton (20), but better on countback. On Saturday 17th April the Gents section competing in the first Monthly Medal of the summer season and there was a big field of close to 100 competitors. Matt Sedgwick (8), pictured, was the overall winner with a
net 63. Matt’s round included 3 birdies, two of these coming on the 2nd and 3rd holes. Paul Blake (9) was second with a highly creditable 63, all the better after a nearly disastrous quadruple bogey on the Par 3 second hole. Liam O’Sullivan (2) was third on the same net score of 65 as Paul Blake, but losing out on countback. On Sunday the 18th there was a Pro’s Prize Stableford format which was won by Stuart Marsh (19) scoring 37 points. Ash Howe (6) was second with 36 points, closely followed by Steve Page (14) on 35 points. Ash might have thought the competition was his for winning when he scored back to back birdies on the 8th and 9th holes.
