100 SONGS FOR CAPTAIN TOM
continued page 2
A retired headmaster has been inspired by the late national hero Captain Sir Tom Moore to raise money for a local drama and musical group. Yorkshire-born Capt Tom made headlines around the world when in the run-up to his 100th birthday he raised £32million for NHS charities during the pandemic by walking 100 lengths of his garden with the aid of a walking frame. Graham Elliott, chairman of Steel Valley Beacon Arts, will be in his Stocksbridge garden on Saturday (May 1st) and like Capt Tom has set a target of 100. But Graham, rather than striding out, will be singing most of 100 songs. During the marathon six-hour session, Beacon teenagers Zoe Senior and Charlie Taylor will sing a few songs with Graham. Piano accompaniment will be by local musician and composer Joe Shaw who studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and who has been involved in Beacon productions and Daniel Timmins, musical director of Beacon and Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir.
100 SONGS: Graham Elliot, 78, will be singing from his garden.
Local theatrical legend Margaret Moss, also a Beacon member, will be walking up and down the bowling green 100 times. And Beacon Youths Alex Holmes and Caitlin Peacock will walk over 100km over the next few days.
Pensitone 'LEGEND' passes away Tributes have been paid to a Penistone 'legend' and community hero who sadly died last Thursday.
“Steve was not just a massive part of the cricket club, but of the wider Penistone community and the Grammar school.'
Steve Reid, who passed away aged 70, was chairman of Penistone Cricket Club and described as a 'true gentleman' by the club.
Mr Reid's family are calling for friends and family to join them in lining Sheffield Road, the main road between Oxspring and Penistone, on May 6, at 10.30 to pay their respects to Mr Reid.
In a statement, the club said: “A true gentleman, legend and amazing guy will be sadly missed by us all.

Graham, aged 78, has performed with Steel Valley Beacon and sings with Thurgoland Community Choir, Fox Valley Voices and Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir. He said: “Because of lockdown Steel Valley Beacon, like other local groups, has been starved of income so, taking a lead from Capt Tom, I set this target of singing 100 songs. I love to sing - but this will be a bit of a test. It’s nice of the youngsters to give me support by doing some singing." The ground-breaking, long-established group, needs money to make sure the show goes on. Local people of all ages are members, with young people playing a central role. The group’s next project is A Midsummer Night’s Dream with performances at Fox Valley shopping centre and at Christ Church in September and October. Steel Valley Beacon artistic director Mandy Aitken said: “Members have been rehearsing A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Zoom over the last year and they are bursting to get back to performing live. This year has been hard for those of us who understand the importance of the arts in terms of mental health. Graham is not only raising money but showing us all how joyous being a performer is.” Graham’s tuneful ton-up will be recorded and put up on YouTube. People wishing to donate can do so by using this JustGiving link Crowdfunding to Captain Tom challenge for Steel Valley Beacon Arts on JustGiving Steel Valley Beacon will perform six sketches about the Stocksbridge valley on Zoom on June 13th. Called Lovely Bygones, it is a free show and can be watched by emailing Mandy Aitken manyja@hotmail.co.uk for Zoom codes.

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe and daughter Alice show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities as their father. They are now helping the successful window company build on the 43 years of trading.

ASPIRING ENTREPRENEURS BRAVE DRAGONS’ DEN IN ONLINE EVENT Barnsley College Business students have been testing their entrepreneurial skills by facing a panel of ‘dragons’ with their business pitches. Taking place entirely on Microsoft Teams, the event was designed to encourage the students to formulate a business idea, write a business a plan and execute the perfect funding pitch. Each pitch was managed by a small group of students and included business aims and activities, a marketing plan, market research and SWOT analysis. The two teams’ million-dollar ideas included an eco-friendly and fully customisable plant pot business, and an elegant wedding planning agency. The event was a competition in which, together with the team, we had to make a plan for our own business; it gave us the opportunity to put ourselves in the place of some entrepreneurs. “In this competition, we realised the importance of teamwork, the fact that we must listen to the opinions of others and take them into account. The most important thing we learned was how to create a business plan which is essential if, someday, we want to open our own businesses. That really helped us develop our creativity and imagination." Liam Garside, Tutorial Team Leader for Business, Warehousing and Logistics and one of the presiding Dragons, added: “This event was a great

way for our students to develop key employability skills for the future. It aimed to develop communication skills, teamwork and confidence. In turn, this has had an impact on their performance in modules such as event planning, marketing and enterprise. “Persuasive language and good presentation delivery also played an important role during this task. ‘Man with the Pram’
encourages city to get vaccinated Sheffield’s own ‘man with the pram’, famous in the city for his charity fundraising efforts and trademark green wig and pram, shares a video message encouraging others to get the covid vaccine. 82 year old John Burkhill has received both doses of the covid vaccine giving him the highest level of protection from the virus. A Sheffield legend, John was bestowed the honour of Freedom of the City of Sheffield in recognition of his fundraising for Macmillan spanning four decades, awarded a Pride of Britain award in 2013 and last year received a second British Empire Medal from the Queen. Grateful to be vaccinated and hopeful for the future, John has shared a video message encouraging others to get the covid vaccine. You can watch John’s message on NHS Sheffield CCG’s YouTube channel.
John said: “I’ve had my second vaccine and I’m grateful to the NHS that I’m protected, there’s nothing to be frightened of, the NHS are doing what’s right. I didn’t have any side effects and would encourage everyone to get vaccinated. “I’m so looking forward to getting back out on the road again.” In Sheffield over 267k people have received their first dose of a covid vaccine and everyone in the top nine priority groups has been invited, 84k have now received a second dose too.
Alun Windle, Chief Nurse and Covid Vaccination Lead at NHS Sheffield CCG said: “We reached a milestone in April inviting everyone in the top priority groups for their covid vaccine. “Having both doses is important as this gives you the best protection so don’t delay when you’re invited. You’ll typically be invited for your second dose at week 11 and this could
be at short notice so please be prepared for the invite to come at any time. You’ll receive the same vaccine as you did for your first. “Thank you to everyone who has been vaccinated so far, we’re making great progress in Sheffield and may this continue.” If you are in an eligible group – meaning you are 45 or over, have a health condition that puts you at greater risk, or are a health or social care worker – and you haven’t booked your first dose yet, the time to do so is right now. It’s quick and simple to book at www.nhs.uk/ covid-vaccination or by phoning 119. If you are aged over 50, you have a health condition that means you’re eligible for vaccination or you’re a health and care worker, and you haven’t been vaccinated or cannot get an appointment through national booking system, speak to your GP surgery.

SIZE OF A PLANET In March 2020, as an era-defining pandemic, swept the globe, and the UK went into its first national lockdown, a truly original project was born in the steel city of Sheffield.

a Volvo S60 driving in an inappropriate manner.
PC Turner, who pursued Hartigan, said: “I became aware of a Volvo S60 and its driver, who was later identified as Hartigan, driving at speed and dangerously through Sheffield. “I eventually caught up with the car, which was driving in excess of 90mph and was overtaking vehicles dangerously, including on blind bends. I illuminated my blue lights and requested the vehicle to stop.
Originally conceived by guitarist & producer Bryan Day as something to keep him sane’, the project is a musical version of the family folddown paper game known as Consequences, Pass it On, or Exquisite Corpse. Bryan signed up 19 friends to each record a musical idea and email it on to the next in line, who would add their own bit of sonic alchemy.
The Size of a Planet project is an innovative way for the group to focus their talents on creating fresh new music during a time of lockdowns and restrictions that's had devastating consequences for artists and musicians across the globe.http://bit.ly/After_The_Seclusion_ Single

Man jailed for dangerous driving
Size of a Planet is a collective of 19 diverse musicians, vocalists and producers with a remarkable record of achievements, including World Music Awards, Grammy nominations, UK and US #1 hit records, and credits with the likes of Joe Strummer, Richard Hawley, Jarvis Cocker, Basement Jaxx, Florence and the Machine, Cassius, and Bob Sinclar.
19 passes later these initial ideas, now full to bursting with musical goodness, triumphantly returned to their originators in glorious technicolour for a grand reveal, with songs encompassing genres from R&B and acoustic Soul to Pop and electronica.

A Sheffield man has been jailed after dangerous driving left a woman, 61, with a broken back, writes the Sheffield Star. A Sheffield man is behind bars after his dangerous driving led to a high speed police chase and left one of his victims with a broken back. Aaron Hartigan, 24, of Pot House Lane, Sheffield appeared
in court on Wednesday, April 21 charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving following a pursuit in 2018 that left two victims with lasting injuries. On August 13 that year, PC Wes Turner from the Roads Policing Group was on patrol in Chapeltown when he became aware of
Advertising Feature: Look Local Newspaper does not support any political parties.
“Hartigan failed to do so and a pursuit commenced. At one point in the pursuit, Hartigan passed through a red traffic light narrowly avoiding a collision with other vehicles crossing in front of him. Hartigan came to a stop after colliding with a bus and Ford Focus on Blacksmith Lane, Grenoside. “The Ford Focus was spun around 180 degrees and the passenger of the car, a 61-year-old woman, suffered a broken back.
“Hartigan exited his vehicle and fled the scene, with no regard for the injuries he had caused to others. He was later caught and arrested.” “Hartigan maintained his innocence throughout questioning, delaying the case. Hard work from our Roads Policing Group ensured that Hartigan was put before the courts, where he pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving on 14 April.” PC Turner added: “During a pursuit we dynamically assess the risk to the public, police and fleeing driver continuously. We don’t want anyone to become hurt, and unfortunately in this case, an innocent woman and her husband did suffer injuries. “Hartigan showed no remorse for his actions or the physical and emotional pain and distress he caused.” Hartigan was sentenced to three years in prison and has been disqualified from driving for four and a half years.

History of the English lawn As part of our series on wildlife gardening it is important to look back at where the English gardener’s passion for the perfect lawn came from. The Middle English word “lawnde” originally referred to a natural glade or an opening in the woods. Eventually, an artificial glade became known by the same name. Some of the earliest lawns were grasslands around medieval castles and kept clear of trees so guards had an unobstructed of the approaching enemy. The term also referred to shared village ”commons “ on which sheep and cattle owned by the “commoners” would keep the grass short by grazing.
Welcome some weeds. A “weed” is only a plant in the wrong place. Clover feeds the lawn with nitrogen and , along with daisies and dandelion, provides a food source for bees and other insects; Don’t cut the lawn too short in summer. It will lose more water. Allow a patch of grass to grow and flower. It will attract birds, insects and invertebrates - and grass flowers are very pretty. Consider sowing wildflower seeds or planting plugs to create a mini wildflower meadow which is both attractive to the eye and a food source for bees, butterflies and other insects. Beware of strimming in corners and under hedges where hedgehogs could be sleeping. Less time spent mowing will create a quieter environment and provide more time to enjoy other leisure activities. Enjoy your gardening! The Upper Don Tree Charter Branch with thanks to the RSPB and the Planet Natural Research Centre for additional information.
The shame of the game Who will they blame? For the shame of the game, who will they say was wrong? Whose voice rang out with that command? Local Notices Young Baker Dear Sirs Please could you print the following in Look Local with our thanks to a very thoughtful Thomas. One evening last week a young man came knocking on the door with a box of buns that he had baked that afternoon with his mum. Apparently he went around Liberty Steels Retirement Bungalows in Deepcar where we live offering a bun to every occupant, and they were delicious. What a lovely young man and what a lovey gesture it was and the surprise was very much appreciated in these difficult times. Just hope there was a bun left for Grandmother Barbara!!! Anonymous.

New park for Wisewood Ready to take on the
‘Bob Graham’ to help kit out rescue team
Meet Jack and Damian. Both are current team members at Woodhead Mountain Rescue and have set themselves quite the challenge...the Bob Graham to be exact.
Residents in Wisewood will soon have a new space to play, relax and enjoy the outdoors, as Council Leader Bob Johnson approved final plans for a new park and playground at Spider Park.
Councillor Bob Johnson, Leader of the Council, said: “We’ve been working with local residents to get this right – and I’m delighted that work is about to start.
People living in the area have been asking for improvements to the park, on the site of the former Wisewood School, and councillors have been working with the local communities over recent years to ensure the new park is right for area and delivers on what people want to see.
“There have been a number of hurdles over the years, so it’s even more pleasing that we’re now over them and can deliver what people in Wisewood have been asking for. From the onset we have wanted to create a haven where local people can get outdoors, have fun and enjoy some fresh air.
Following recent feedback from the community the original scope of the project has been increased, and this has now been formally approved by the Council.
“I used to go to the old Wisewood School so it’s also been an interesting personal journey for me in being able to sign-off plans for the park as Leader of the Council.
The new park is the last piece of the jigsaw for leisure opportunities in the Wisewood area over recent years after the creation of the Leisure Centre, the on-site pitches and a community garden.
“I want to thank all the people in the community who have made these plans a reality, and I’m excited to be able to take my little one to the playground soon"
The Bob Graham is a running challenge in the Lake District around a circular route of approximately 66 miles, over 42 mountains, climbing around 27,000ft, all within 24 hours. As this challenge has only been completed by just over 2000 people, it is deemed quite a serious undertaking. Jack and Damian will be taking part in the challenge on the 18th & 19th of June. They will be raising funds for the team to help purchase new outdoor clothing. As outdoor clothing are nearing the end of their life after protecting team members against the British elements, it is vital that they get replaced to help keep team members warm and safe whilst out assisting others. To donate, follow the link below to their just giving page. We wish both the very best of luck on what will be a huge achievement! https://www.justgiving.com/fundrai.../jackanddamianbobgraham
Visitors flock to see the new ‘Hen House’
Whirlow Hall Farm were delighted to announce the opening of their newly refurbished Hen House this weekend. The project funded by local online educational publishing house, Twinkl enhances the immersive experience for visitors and the students the Trust supports. With a new 80-seater café opening in June, the Hen House refurb marks the next phase of growth for the charity, encouraging more visitors to the much-loved local spot. The refurbished Hen House will enhance the learning delivery for the many vulnerable youngsters the charity works with but will provide the local community with opportunities to meet farm animals up close and personal, such as Horacio, the farms hand reared orphaned calf. The Hen House was officially opened by Jonathan and
Susie Seaton, Co-founders of Twinkl on Saturday 24th April, in line with all current Covid restrictions. Jonathan Seaton, Co-founder and CEO of Twinkl said: “It is really exciting to see the new Hen House at Whirlow Hall Farm Trust open to visitors. It’s a real honour to be involved in a project that will further support the educational work the Trust does with children and young people and it’s fantastic that we were able to assist with the refurbishment. I look forward to visiting regularly in the future and continuing to witness the great work done by the Trust in the community.” Whirlow Hall Farm Trust plays a vital role in the city's alternative provision network supporting children and young people facing a complex combination of difficulties which can include a
range of mental health conditions. Sarah Kerrigan, Head of Fundraising and Events said: “We are extremely grateful to Twinkl for supporting this project. Visitors to the café and shop help support the vital work we do so being able to meet a gentle calf, groom a rabbit, and check to see if the hens have laid eggs during their visit are not only fun and informative activities for local families, but crucial to encourage them to visit. The new Hen House together with our playground and upcoming new café will, without a doubt, help us to keep moving forward and allow us to share more magical moments with everyone at our beautiful location.” For more information visit whirlowhallfarm.org

Chapeltown top the Speedway table after latest win
Chapeltown RBL picked up where they left off last week, inspired by a Mitch Savage first half hat trick.
Following a driving run by striker Curtis Dennison, the ball was cut back to Savage to volley home left footed after 5 minutes. It was the same combination again ten minutes later as Dennison rose highest to flick on for Savage to lob the oncoming goalkeeper. As the first half drew to a close, it was Archie Clayton who turned provider, as Savage nutmegged his marker before sliding the ball home. Following a number of changes at the break, Legion made it 4 after good work from Joe Moorhouse found Morgan Cowell who powered through and finished with confidence. Moorehouse and Chim Nkhata were both thwarted by the Colley keeper to stop it from becoming 5-0, before Tom Duty was adjudged to have pulled back a Colley attacker, who converted the penalty kick against Joe Hindmarch in goal.
This weekend has also seen two major pairs competitions on Saturday and Sunday, the 24th and 25th April. Saturday was the annual qualifier for the Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs Aitchison Trophy Competition. The format for the Gents competition is a better ball Stableford and with the excellent condition of the course and very favourable weather, the scores were expected to be good. Nearly 40 pairs entered the qualifier and only 11 points separated first to last place. Three pairs finished on the leading score of 45
“The extra meetings will keep me busy and I just can’t wait to get started really.”
Wright is making a comeback after five years out of the sport, but he’s been a regular on the grasstrack circuit.
Wright is also backing Sheffield for a successful season when they get going next month.
And he’s thrilled to have the opportunity to link up with the Tru Plant Tigers for their first season back in the top flight. “It all came out the blue really,” he said.
Stocksbridge Golfers Bask in Glorious Sunshine The sunny and dry weather has continued and Stocksbridge golfers have made the most of the fabulous Spring weather. Hilja and Liana O’Sullivan (pictured), fresh from their victory in the Yorkshire Ladies County Golf Association Qualifier, can be seen at the Golf Club enjoying the great conditions. The good news is that Margaret Pearson and Kath Busfield, who finished second, have also qualified for the next stage of the Yorkshire wide competition.
JAMES Wright has revealed how his move to Sheffield came ‘out of the blue’.
“I got a ‘phone call from the Bates family, they asked me what my thoughts were and it went from there really. “I always said I wanted to double up; I thought maybe during the season, do a few meetings and then maybe the opportunity would come.
“From what I can see we look a really decent side,” Wright said. “But we always say from the beginning of the season that the racing isn’t done on paper. “So everyone has just got to ride to their potential and then we’ll find out where we are come the end of the season.” Tigers open the campaign at Belle Vue on Monday May 17 and then return to Owlerton on Thursday May 20 for a clash with Peterborough.
“But this came at the right time for me and I’m just going to take it with both hands and it will do me the world of good having two clubs.
points, but it was Assistant Greenkeeper, Wayne Lazenby and John Gonciarz who won on countback. Trevor Moseley and Andy Taylor were second with Stuart Marsh and Pete Mannion coming in third. As a measure of the benign conditions, particularly the lack of any wind, 17 birdie 2’s were recorded on the courses par 3’s. On Sunday the Gents and Ladies’ sections competed in the Spring Mixed Foursomes. The results certainly seemed to favour married couples, with the first three places going to pairings in more than just the golfing sense. Margaret and Alfred Pearson, with a handicap allowance of 29, came out on top with a net score of 64. Sue and Robert Clegg (41) were second with a net score of 65, closely followed by Sue and Steve Hill (21) also with a net 65, but a slightly higher back 9. Perhaps the round of the week belongs to Andrew Finney though. In the midweek Stableford on the 22nd April Andrew, playing off a handi-
cap of just 1, won the competition with 39 points. His round included 4 birdies and just two dropped shots. This might even be the round of the year so far at the Club and is clear evidence of the very high standard of golf that Andrew has been playing for some time now. Callum Brown (17) did well to hang onto Andrew’s coat tails with 38 points. Richard Grimmer (16), Jonathon Finlay (28) and Cliff James (21) all had 36 points, but Richard claimed third spot on countback. The Dragons Section competed for their April Medal on the 21st April. Dave Stringer (14), the Section Captain, came home victorious with a net 66. Dave’s round was consistent over the 18 holes, nothing spectacular but more importantly for a stroke play competition, no disasters either. Frank Milnes (20), the Chairman of the Cub’s Directors Committee, was second with a 70, beating Sandy Murphy (12), who had the same net score, into third place on countback.

Cricket: Thriller in first game Totley 237 ao Stocksbridge 1st XI 240-7
out a care for where the ball was pitched he dispatched the bowling and brought his 50 up within 7 overs. Andy Hibbert did however take the first wicket as opener Anwar Khan was caught behind, from a good catch by the debutant Andy Hirst behind the stumps.
Stocksbridge won by 3 wickets The 1st XI got off to a winning start chasing down 237 to beat Totley in a thrilling opening game:
Totley finished 237 all out, with Jake Vickers being the pick of bowlers finishing with 3-18 off his 8 overs. Captain Andy Hibbert finished with 3-66 and Liam Grayson finished with 2-20 off his 8 overs.
The sun was shining as we welcomed back cricket to Bracken Moor, as the 1st XI entertained Totley Bent C.C. 1st XI captain Andy Hibbert won the toss and elected to bowl first, putting Totley into bat. Father and son Andy Hibbert and Joe Hibbert took the new ball and hoped to get off to a good start.
A commanding total from the Totley batsmen, leaving a big total to chase down.
Totleys opener Noman Iqbal had other ideas and got Totley off to an absolute flyer. With-

Jack Newton and Matt Price took to the crease, knowing they needed to get off to a good start. Price, using all his experience dispatched every bad ball and started to make things tick. Backed up by an elegant Newton, the pair began to take the game to Totley. Price, who was flying and looking in great nick, brought his 50 up within 10 overs setting the platform for a possible win. Newton, fell for a well-made 37 after an unlucky dismissal leaving the 1st XI 94-1. However a couple of quick wickets in quick succession turned the game in Totleys favour leaving them precariously on 112-4. Price being one of the batsmen removed for a superb knock of 65, an unlucky dismissal with a miscom-

munication with Antony Siddall. Liam Grayson came to the crease and begin to get into his grove, looking in great form Grayson began to turn the game back into the home teams favour. Jon Pickford backed him up brilliantly, ticking it along nicely and keeping Stocksbridge in with a chance of winning the game. With the score at 175, Pickford was caught out leaving a daunting 62 off the last 9 overs, with only 4 wickets remaining. Joe Hibbert joined Grayson and the pair of them began to take the game to Totley, Grayson was the aggressor and Hibbert was the anchor. Totley were silent and game swung back into Stocksbridge favour. Hibbert and Grayson were in full control with every bad ball being hit for a boundary, the spectators were excited and on their feet. Grayson brought his 50 up, the 1st XI knew if Hibbert and Grayson batted deep they were in with a chance of getting close to the chasing total. At 228, Grayson was caught in the deep for a brilliant knock of 58. Was the game to turn back in Totleys favour? Needing 8 to win off the last over Hibbert and Cavanagh ran hard, Hibbert hitting a two, then another two. Which followed with two dot balls. Four to win off the last two balls, nails were being bitten. Hibbert cleared his front leg and cleared the ropes for six giving the 1st XI a three wicket victory. An unbelievable chase, batting deep and a number batsmen scoring 30 or more. Hibbert finished with 43 not out, seeing the game home for Stocksbridge. All in all, a superb run chase and brilliant 25 points from a great team performance from the 1st XI. ” Richmond 244/7 Stocksbridge 2nd XI 120 ao Stocksbridge 2nds started their campaign away to a newly strengthened Richmond side, losing by 124 runs. Photo: Liam Grayson took 2-20 and made a brilliant 58.
