Barnsley Council approves historic pub development PLANS that will ensure the future of the historic Fountain Inn in the South Yorkshire village of Ingbirchworth have been unanimously approved by Barnsley Council. Award-winning Yorkshire property developer Conroy Brook, in association with Brook Leisure Group, will restore the currently derelict pub and restaurant to its place at the heart of the village as part of a scheme that will also see the development of nine family homes, with work on site scheduled to start this summer. Conroy Brook already has a successful development in Ingbirchworth, the award-winning Summerford development of 13 detached homes. And in the nearby village of Hoylandswaine, the company’s Swaine Meadow development of ten four and five bedroom detached homes has proved another success for the company. “We are delighted that Barnsley Council recognised the value

of a scheme that will greatly enhance the village, adding to the spirit of regeneration that this area deserves,” said Conroy Brook CEO Richard Conroy. “Central to the whole project is the future of the Fountain, which will now be completely refurbished by Barnsley’s Brook Leisure Group. “We anticipate that we will be on site by the summer with a scheme that will be entirely sympathetic with the surrounding neighbourhood and should prove extremely popular.” Jason Brook, director of both Conroy Brook and Brook Leisure Group, added: “We have a long history of providing quality hospitality venues around Barnsley and beyond - projects as varied as Brooklands Hotel and The Pavilion at Gateway Plaza in Barnsley. “We look forward to bringing a revitalised pub back to life with the support of the local community.”

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe and daughter Alice show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities as their father. They are now helping the successful window company build on the 43 years of trading.

Rumours of Sheffield Arctic Monkeys gig quashed Molly Williams, Local Democracy Reporting Service Sheffield Council have quashed rumours that local legends Arctic Monkeys were planning an upcoming show in one of the city’s most popular parks. An event created by Manchester Events on Facebook claimed the band were returning for a homecoming gig at Hillsborough Park on June 3 next year. The event was shared 465 times and 760 people clicked to say they were going and a further 14,000 said they were interested.

At the start of April, Riley Frost gave himself an enormous challenge of running 90 miles throughout the month. That's an incredible 3 miles a day! He had hoped to raise as much as £150, but as his efforts began to near the end of a tiring month his total raised had reached a staggering £2000.

But when asked to confirm the situation, a spokesperson for the council said they had not received any requests for a licence application for a music event in Hillsborough Park next year, other than Tramlines festival.

Riley’s chosen charity is very much close to his and his family's heart as when the football-mad youngster was just 10 days old, he was treated for bacterial meningitis with doctors giving an uncertain future for the now thriving Stocksbridge High School pupil.

Rumours the band was planning shows at the park have circulated for years but have yet to come to fruition. In 2018 it was confirmed by the council that an application made by promoters SJM Concerts to put on concerts there, reported to be for the Arctic Monkeys, was submitted but later withdrawn.

He received great support not only from his family but from his footballing team-mates, at Stocksbridge Park Steels under 12s, many of whom crossed the finish line with the exhausted fundraiser.

This was same year the band was said to have turned down the opportunity to headline Tramlines and played gigs at Sheffield Arena.

His football coach said “Riley is such a great role-model for all youngsters out there, he is a great team-mate, very friendly and helpful, I’m not surprised he has achieved something so demanding and giving as this.”

Rumours then claimed Alex Turner and bandmates would be playing a string of shows in the park this year, a story tentatively covered by publications including NME.

Mum Caroline said “Thank you to everyone who has shared, donated and shown support! It really does mean so much”

These were sparked by posters in the park stating SJM Concerts made an application to the council to host three shows there in June.

Riley’s justgiving page will be open for a further 3 weeks if anyone would like to donate.

The notices said the events would feature live music as well as a bar but did not confirm which acts would be performing however, a Facebook event claimed it would be the Arctic Monkeys.

Sport students take on team talk Barnsley College Sport students have had the chance to hear from a range of virtual guest speakers as part of Sport and Esports Industry Week. The online talks allowed students to explore potential careers within the sector, whilst developing the skills they need for Higher Education or employment. Dom Brook, Director at Brook Corporate Developments, was the first guest speaker of the week. Students were taken through the various transferable skills Dom developed during his early triathlon career, and how this helped him secure a career within the business industry after his sporting career ended. Andy Henson, Head of Academy Physiotherapy at Doncaster Rovers Football Club shared with the students the different career paths available within physiotherapy, talked about the NHS and shared an insight into what he does on a day-to-day basis. The main activity of the week was a gripping talk by Steve Judge, Paratriathlon World Champion and public speaker. Steve shared the personal and moving story of his near fatal car accident which resulted in both of his legs being crushed. His story took students on an inspiring and entertaining journey following his commitment and achievements.

Steve said: “I enjoyed sharing my story of going from wheelchair to world champion and how I set goals along the way. I hope I have inspired the students to not lean on their excuses but to turn their excuses into challenges. I look forward to working closely with Barnsley College in the future to help the students on their journey as they work towards successfully achieving their goal, opportunity, love and desire (GOLD).” Students also heard from two representatives from Sheffield Sharks basketball team. Yuri Matischen, Managing Director at MLS Contracts Ltd. and Chairman of the Sheffield Sharks basketball team, delivered an informative workshop around organising sporting events. The talk covered the logistics surrounding events, fans’ expectations, the growth of esports tournaments and how COVID19 has impacted the sport industry. Marko Backovic, Sheffield Sharks’ Assistant Coach and Head of Community, drew on his own experiences and presented to students the tools, techniques and methodologies he has used as a basketball player, and to become an assistant coach within the game after his career ending injury. Marko commented: “It was great to speak to the Sport students at Barnsley College, and hopefully help them gain an understanding about the importance of having an edu-

cation to fall back on, if something like an injury hits. Also, I hope any coaching students gained an understanding of the key values and principles on how they can use their experience and expertise to help their athletes moving forward.” Over the course of the week, students heard from other speakers from a range of professional backgrounds. This included Ben Cross, Project CoOrdinator at Creative Minds; Claire Cahill, Owner of Accendo Coaching and Training; Nat Jackson, Founder of Totally Runable and Nathan Parker a Youth Worker, Spoken Poet and Author, who shared his journey into creative writing and poetry. The sessions were organised by Jess Widdowson, Enterprise Team Leader at Barnsley College. Jess added: “It was great to have guests talking to our students, inspiring their early career journeys and providing a real opportunity to enrich their skills and knowledge. “We are working with employers to lead the economic recovery and meet their needs both now and for future roles, by providing students and adults with the skills to succeed. I would like to personally thank all of our guest speakers and I’m already looking forward to next year’s event." How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Your Letters Supermarket toilets My elderly disabled mother was shopping in the co op supermarket in stocksbridge recently and asked the store staff if she could use the toilet. She was told to use the toilet in the doctors across the road. My mother frequently requires the use of the toilet as do many people. She has shopped at the store for years I have told her to only shop at stores that provide toilets. But no supermarkets locally publicly provide toilets.

Local elections Thank you for printing my last letter. Unfortunately it doesn't appear to have had much effect on the literature posted through my door recently by some candidates. I've just received something from a candidate which he, again, makes disparaging comments about one of the other candidates. This saddens me as I don't think it reflects well on Stocksbridge, which I've always believed was a caring community. I just don't understand why anyone would choose to make remarks about fellow candidates rather that set out their achievements from the past and plans for the future. It's interesting that some of the candidates talk of the importance of being local (presumably they would also insist on headteachers living 20 yards from their schools?), but their leaflets were printed miles away. Some have managed to put their money where their mouth is and printed locally, which is pleasing to see. I'm a positive person who believes in meaningful actions rather than mean words, and will be voting accordingly on Thursday. Yours hoping for something positive

Village Hall looking to the future Deepcar Village Hall (DVH) is situated at the corner of Helliwell Lane and St Margaret Avenue in Deepcar. It was built around 1974 by the local community for the benefit of the community and was registered with the Charity Commission on 5th November 1976. It is now managed by Deepcar Village Community Association (DVCA). Besides the main hall and kitchen, DVH have a meeting room and a large area of outdoor gardens laid mainly to lawn with mature trees. This is suitable for picnics on warm summer days. DVH also have

a large carpark for use by Village Hall users during their activities and visitors at public events. The Village Hall was extended in 1998/99 to provide the meeting room, better kitchen and toilet facilities and various muchneeded storage rooms. In the past the Hall has been used by local groups of all ages and for events and activities for the general public. The management committee have also organised Discos, Race Nights, Quiz Nights, Barbecues, Craft Fayres, Walking Treasure Hunts and similar activi-

ties to raise funds for the upkeep of the Hall. DVH also helped to organise and run the annual Deepcar Gala, Deepcar Bonfire and Fireworks Display, Also the Father Christmas Carol Tour (where Father Christmas visits and chats to as many children as possible at their own homes) The management committee usually meet on the second Thursday of each month to discuss matters of maintaining the hall and grounds and planning future events. There are 7 or 8 members most of whom are now grandparents, and some would welcome a rest from their duties. The

duties involve maintaining and looking after our financial accounts, liaising with other organisations, ensuring the property is kept in good condition and volunteering to help with odd jobs and mowing the lawns. Unfortunately, the Gala and Bonfire with Fireworks have been cancelled for last few years as we have insufficient able-bodied volunteers to run the events safely. DVH would welcome some younger blood on the committee who may help and bring new ideas for the use of the Hall and future events.

Church lose discipline in sorry defeat EV Sportswear League Cup Group Match 5 Kiveton Park 2-1 AFC Penistone Church Scorer for AFC Church – Jack Moore pen 82 Lacking their usual team spirit it was a day to forget for AFC Church at Kiveton last Saturday. They played most of the latter part of the game with nine men due to Brad Kemp’s ten minutes in the sin bin for dissent and the referee gave George Ellis a red card for what he saw as a dangerous tackle and he also sent Charlie Shepherd off for retaliation. Assistant manager John Whitehead said “It’s always a difficult place to visit Kiveton, we didn’t start the game too well, the first five or ten minutes we struggled to get into the game a little bit, they were on top through set pieces and we weren’t picking up men.

It was a disappointing result, it’s disappointing from the lads in terms of discipline, and they can only really blame themselves for how it’s ended up with the bookings, the red card and the result.” Under 18s suffer defeat Meadowhall Bud Evans DB Sports U18s Division 1

Maurice passed away earlier this week aged 76. He was the man in charge of our club the last time we were in the top division up until the 1988 season when the team included great talent like the Moran brothers, Kelly and Shawn. Maurice was also elected as chairman of British Speedway and was still working actively with his family business A&E Transport until recently. All at Sheffield Speedway send our sincere condolences to the Ducker family, friends and staff at A&E Transport. PICTURED: Maurice with Neil Collins during Sheffield's last spell in the top flight.

Stocksbridge Rugby make tough step up

Stocksbridge Rugby made the short journey up the M1 to play in a ‘round robin’ tournament with Barnsley RUFC & a strong Sheffield University XV last weekend, & although they were soundly beaten in both matches, it was a good outing for the Stocksbridge lads who showed a lot of determination & resilience to compete in both games despite injuries & late withdrawals leaving them with a threadbare squad. Towering 2nd rower Andy ‘Groot’ Beal continued his form as the week’s top trainer with another solid performance, & back rowers Newton & Rowett gave their all as a stand in centre partnership. Encourag-

ing cameos from Jordan Fletcher & Tommy Spencer showed their worth to the squad however, the Man of the Match award went to ‘slammin’ Sam Whitaker for his efforts on both sides of the ball. There were minor injuries to Aspin (face), Keenan (hamstring) & Dan Burt (head) as the pace of the students, & the power of the home side eventually wore the gallant visitors down. Stand in skipper Adam RolesMiddlehurst said ‘we were a bit short on numbers, but the boys who did play acquitted themselves admirably & stuck to the tasks’ adding ‘it was a tough

night, but enjoyable to be playing some rugby again’ ! There are unlikely to be any further fixtures for the Stocksbridge club this side of their forthcoming league season restart in September, & accordingly, a resumption of squad training has now been delayed until the beginning of June.

With the Club set to reopen it’s doors on May 17th, the annual AGM has been scheduled for Saturday 26th June @ 2pm, where all members are asked to attend, to have a voice. Whilst Middlehurst has thrown his hat into the ring to be considered for 1st XV

Captain, with Rowett potentially as his vice, others may well come forward on this date. The Club’s charity runners are just about at the end of their ‘Run Nation Hadrian’s Wall ultra-run for 2021’, the revised target of £1000 is within touching distance now. Both the Club & ‘Oliver’s Army‘ charity, supporting mental health awareness, in memory of the late Oliver Sinclair stand to benefit. For final donations please go to the JustGiving page; www. justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ oliversarmyandstocksbridge . Thanks go to all runners & all donations made

Golf Club Annual Championship Gets Underway

The summer season at Stocksbridge Golf Club is very much into full swing with the Gents Section Championship season now started. The Club selects a range of summer competitions played in different stroke play, stableford and match play formats to find the annual Champion Golfer of the Year. 2020 was an unusual year because of Covid, with a shortened number of competitions that counted towards the award, but Andy Hogg, one of the Club’s newer members, came out victorious and will be trying hard to defend his crown. Club Captain, Alan Revill, said “we might be a relatively small club, but the competition for the title of Club Champion is fiercely fought every year.” The first qualifying round took place on the 1st May with the Whitbread Cup. The format for this competi-

tion is match play for each competitor against the course, not any other playing opponents. It is also known as a Bogey Competition and is not a common format in golf. The more holes that you beat the course with the better the chance you have of winning, but you also need to avoid losing holes as well. The weather conditions were cold but surprisingly calm and with the course looking magnificent it was inevitable that the plenty would be playing. Just under 100 members took part in the competition and Stuart Marsh (19) came out victorious being 6 up against the course. That is an impressive result meaning that Stuart bettered his handicap on at least 6 holes and didn’t do too much damage to his card on the remainder. It was on the front 9 that Stuart put himself in such a strong position,

making the turn 5 up against the course. Trevor Mosely (11) was the overall runner up, 5 up against the course, just one hole behind Stuart. Three players, Steve Cain (16), Cliff James (22) and Alex Grimmer (11) all finished 3 up against the course. Steve took third place with a better back 9 score, particularly helped by a rare birdie on the long uphill par 3 16th.

Earlier in the week the Dragons Section competed for the Founders Trophy, as stroke play competition. Mick Bellamy (21) won be a very clear margin coming in with a net 58. In a distant second place was Peter Dickinson (20) with a net 64, a score matched by Mick Siddall (17), but with a lower gross for the back 9.

The Gents Section played a midweek stableford on the 29th April and Warren Oliver (13) triumphed with 38 points. It was the same score as Callum Brown (16) and Frank Milnes (21), though the two of them were placed second and third respectively with their back 9 points score. The Ladies section has played two competitions this week, the first being the Back 9 holes on the 0th April. Heather Evans (14), the Ladies’ Vice Captain, won with 16 points in the stableford format. Margaret Pearson (12) also scored 16 points but lost out to Heather on countback. Kath Busfield (11) was thirs with 14 points. Then on Sunday 2nd May the Ladies Section competed for the Buckley Bowl, a strokeplay format. Hilja O’Sullivan (22) continued her good early season form by winning the competition with a net 66. Terri

Moffett (35) also finished with a net 66 but lost out to Hilja on countback. Sue Hill (24) came in third with a net 71. Finally, the Gents Section competed on the 2nd May for a Pro’s Prize Stableford. John Needham (26) won the competition with 39 points, leading Chris Naylor (11) with 38 points into second place. Mick Hulbert (13) finished third with 37 points in a large Sunday morning field of near to 50 players.

CRICKET: Firth half-century secures win Sheffield Medics 129 all out (A Hibbert 4-26) Stocksbridge 1st XI 132-5 (A Hirst 47 not out)

The 1st XI travelled to the scenic place of Grindleford as Sheffield Medics hosted at a covid neutral ground. Another toss, another win as Andy Hibbert called right and elected to bowl first, in what seemed to be bowler friendly conditions. However, Medics got off to a very good start and the 1st XI struggled to find an early break through with a number of fours coming off the first few overs. With 56 on the board skipper Andrew Hibbert led from the front and struck the first blow removing opener Rao for 23. Another little partnership took Medics to 82 but Hibbert picked up his second wicket, the 1st XI were back on top.

coming off the first 4 overs. Newton was the first to depart for 22 after a miss timed shot straight to mid off. Price followed with the score at 54-2, with both opener miss timing their shots and both breaking their bats in the process. The 1st XI needed an anchor and Andrew Hirst came to the crease and looked in complete control of the situation. Hirst started to kick on and despatch any bad bowl to the boundary as the chasing total grew ever closer. However, is it a 1st XI chase without making things a little bit nervy? Dave Smith, who was back in the side, hit a well made 15 before being clean bowled missing a straight one. He was quickly followed back to the hut by Liam Grayson and Steve Perry. With the score at 122-5, was the game about to take an unexpected turn? Hirst was the hero as he took the 1st over the line with 5 wickets to spare, finishing on a well made unbeaten 47. It was another huge six to seal the victory. It was back to back victories for the 1st XI to start the 2021 season, as they entertain the exciting Sheffield Super Strikers this Saturday at Bracken Moor.

From then on the Medics innings never got going with the 1st XI picking up regular wickets to control the game and keep the run rate down in the process. Medics lost 7 wickets for a disappointing 47 runs to leave them 129 all off with nearly 10 overs remaining. After a positive start from Medics, the 1st XI showed great character to stay in the game and pull things back with the ball. It was another all round bowling performance with the wickets shared out between the bowlers. Skipper Andrew Hibbert was the pick of the bowlers finishing with 4-26, backed up well by Liam Grayson 2-16 and Jake Vickers 2-43. At the tea break the 1st required 130 to make it back to back wins.

Hallam 5th 180/8 (Rowan Brearley 4-44) Stocksbridge 2nd XI 181/7 (Jack Firth 50, Jack Murfin 49)

Stocksbridge 2nd XI hosted Hallam this week, looking to bounce back from a disappointing defeat in their season opener. Hallam won the toss and elected to bat. Thwaites and Brearley bowled really well opening up, with young Brearley claiming 2 early breakthroughs. Hallam rebuilt well, with 4 batsmen scoring 25+. Thwaites removed top scorer Grant for 42, before Brearley took 2 further scalps. Hallam finished on a good total of 180-7, Brearley finished with excellent figures of 4-44, ably assisted by Thwaites and Harris. Captain Thwaites retained his faith in youth, and again opened the batting with Firth, this time accompanied by the returning Bob Newton. Stocksbridge rebuilt well after an awful start and were well up with the run rate, before Ogley fell for 24. Jack Reeves fell shortly after for just 8, bringing Jack Murfin to the crease to join Jack Firth. The pair formed an imperious partnership, complimenting each other perfectly with a fine array of boundaries. The pair looked in great form, resulting in a fantastic moment for all at SCC, as young Firth brought up his first ever 50 in adult cricket. Agonisingly, his partner Murfin couldn’t quite match him, falling for 49. However the pair had put Stocksbridge in complete control, and following a couple of quick wickets, Thwaites hit the winning runs with just under 3 overs to spare. A superb response to defeat in the first game and amazing to see youngsters leading the way with both bat and ball.
