OVER 90% OF MOST VULNERABLE TO COVID NOW VACCINATED Over 90% of people aged over 70 years old in Sheffield are now fully vaccinated from covid-19.

GP, ring 119 or visit www.nhs.uk/ covid-vaccination to get your vaccine booked in.”

Figures from NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) show that 65,368 or 92% of people aged over 70 years old have now had both doses of covid-19 vaccine.

Freda France, aged 90, was one of the first people to have their covid vaccinations in Sheffield, she explains what being fully vaccinated means to her: “It’s been amazing to be able to have the vaccine and also to be the ‘First Lady of Shiregreen’. I’ve kept active everyday walking to the local co-op and to my favourite chip shop who have all really looked after me, I now call them all my grandsons.

This news is welcome as lockdown restrictions continue to ease and people spend more time with loved ones. Alun Windle, Chief Nurse and Covid Vaccination Lead at NHS Sheffield CCG, said: “It is fantastic news that the vast majority of our over 70s are now fully vaccinated against covid-19. People in this age group are most at risk of serious complications from covid19 so it’s really important that they are vaccinated. If you’re in this age group and haven’t had your vaccination yet, please contact your

“I’ve had lots of walks in the park with my family and my neighbour too. I’ve loved the last few weeks being able to go and have lunch out with more of my family and I’ve been to Morrisons on the veranda catching up and thanking all the staff who’ve looked after me throughout the pandemic - some personally have brought me gifts

up. I’m now happy to be going back to church on a Sunday and I’m using the community transport Door 2 Door service. I can’t wait to be back indoors eating my lunches out again and seeing my friends like Valentine at Morrisons.”

Clive Betts, MP for Sheffield South East, aged 71, who has had his second jab said: “Now I’m fully protected I feel safe to go out and carry out the face to face aspects of my job as a local MP. I’m looking forward to returning to Parliament, while still observing social distancing. “It’s absolutely brilliant news and a huge congratulations to all GP practices, CCG and council for delivering the astonishing vaccination programme. It’s vital that younger people are now vaccinated to protect older people and ...Continued on next page

PEAK DISTRICT HILLS NAMED AFTER SHEFFIELD WOMAN

In total over 287K people have had their first vaccine and over 142K their second in Sheffield.

Charity walk

The summits of 95 hills in the Peak District have been named The Ethels, in honour of Sheffieldborn Ethel Haythornthwaite.

Everyone aged over 40 is now eligible for a vaccine. If you’re aged 40-49 and haven’t been invited for a vaccine yet, please call 119 or book at www.nhs.uk/covidvaccination. Those aged over 50 or those who have a health condition, can also call 119 or contact their GP practice.

During World War One Ethel's husband was killed, and while grieving she took regular walks through the countryside near her home.

Alun added: “Vaccines offer us the best chance of returning to normal life and relaxing lockdown restrictions for good, it’s vital we keep on vaccinating as many people as possible. It’s important to still continue to follow the government’s guidance on social distancing, even after vaccination.”

For the next 60 years she campaigned to preserve the area and was an early environmentalist. A new app allows people to track how many of the Ethels they have walked or climbed.

The NHS has launched the second phase of the vaccination programme vaccinating the healthier population aged 18-49. If you are in this age group you will be contacted by the NHS when you’re eligible for vaccination and will be given details about how and where to book an appointment. Currently people aged 38-39 are being invited.

Tomo Thompson, from CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire, said "There are parts of the Ethel map which will bring people to places they've never been".

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe and daughter Alice show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities as their father. They are now helping the successful window company build on the 43 years of trading.

Local News Sheffield-based property developers Dransfield Properties have submitted a planning application for the creation of 33 new apartments at the Fox Valley development in North Sheffield. The two, three-storey buildings will consist of 27 one bedroom and 6 two bedroom apartments in total which will be located in the heart of Fox Valley. The external elevations of the new buildings will be made of natural Yorkshire sandstone, in keeping with other buildings in the surrounding area. The development will include a beautifully landscaped, private communal garden area for residents and free car parking spaces. The new apartments have plenty of amenities on the doorstep including cafes and restaurants, grocery stores, exciting fashion retailers and independent shops plus a 24 hour gym and beauty salons. Fox Valley is also ideally situated close to the M1, with access via the A616 link road making it the perfect place to live for commuters travelling to Sheffield, Manchester and Leeds.

From 21st June, Ponti’s will also be launching a diary of summer events filled with dance classes, tribute nights, evenings of sports and more, as Covid restrictions are due to ease across the country. Back by popular demand will be Jive on June 30th and Festival Latina on July 30th, both jam-packed evenings of dancing taught by expert instructors along with drinks and canapes. An evening with Elvis has already sold out for July and the team are looking forward to announcing a second date for the autumn. There will also be live screenings of England’s Euros fixtures on 13th, 18th and 22nd June plus live music from Paul Pashley and his band on

PLANS SUBMITTED FOR 33 APARTMENTS IN FOX VALLEY

To deliver the new Fox Valley apartment development, Dransfield Properties have teamed up with award-winning Sheffield based architect firm, Coda, who are the company behind the design of the new Sky House scheme at Oughtibridge Mill. Each apartment has been carefully designed to include a balcony area, extending the living space and creating a contemporary style of housing currently underrepresented in the area. Alisdair Gillespie from Dransfield Properties said: “We are delighted to announce our plans to continue our transformation of the beautiful town of Stocksbridge, which is fast becoming to the go-to place to live, work and socialise in Sheffield. “We are aiming to begin construction this summer with the first apartments going to market in spring 2022”. This investment into new housing at Fox Valley comes following the £24m Towns Fund which was secured for Stocksbridge earlier in the year.

ARTISTS IMPRESSION: Developers claim the apartments have been carefully designed in a contemporary style.

JACK HITS THE HEIGHTS WITH HIS HOME-GROWN EVEREST CHALLENGE runner Tom Pollak was a patient as he battled against cancer.

At this time we cannot accept DVD’s, CD’s, electrical items, furniture, pushchairs, large toys, soft furnishings, men’s suits.

The shop will be open to customers on Mondays and Fridays from 10.00am until 4.00pm.until further notice. Due to COVID restrictions involving spatial arrangements, health, hygiene and customer safety the shop can only offer a limited range of goods and receive donations of saleable items at certain times. We ask all our customer friends and supporters to bear with us until further notice. Mondays and Fridays the shop will be open for purchases of items but please do not bring any donations, bags etc on these days or leave any outside on any day. Wednesdays are set aside to receive donations as required by government

The shop has been running for 17 years. It started as a joint Churches project and has been operated by church volunteers. The shop was initially funded in part by the European Coal and Steel Community £6m fund to Stocksbridge in 2004 managed through Stocksbridge Futures Partnership. The initial aim of the shop was to provide good quality clothing and other items in support of our local community following the closure of our steelworks. Due to the support given by our community through their donations we were able to feed back a considerable amount of money to all local groups. This was an unforeseen bonus which we hope to continue if the start up is successful. The future of the BRIDGE shop depends on community support but it may be affected by forthcoming Town Centre changes on which we have had no consultation.

Our amazing green spaces are exactly why we’re known as the Outdoor City, and they have been a huge asset over the past year, supporting people’s physical and mental health. “A lot of work has been going on behind the scenes to make sure these events can return as the pandemic continues, and we’ll be supporting Parkrun to put any additional measures they need to in place. “Parkrun is very popular and for good reason. LIB DEMS NOW LABOURS OPPOSITION IN SHEFFIELD & BARNSLEY

Last week’s local elections resulted in a resounding win for the Liberal Democrats across both the Barnsley and Sheffield sides of the Penistone & Stocksbridge constituency. Parkrun is set to make its return to Sheffield's Parks. The estimated return date is Saturday 5 June.

20th May 2021

While the Conservatives celebrated an expected hold in Penistone East and a surprise win in Stocksbridge and Upper Don, The Lib Dems made gains in the remaining 4 wards of Penistone West, Dodworth, West Ecclesfield and East Ecclesfield, taking their total number of councillors in the area to ten (5 each on Barnsley and Sheffield Councils). The Lib Dems also narrowly won the popular vote across the constituency, and won all 4 byelection seats up for grabs to regain control of Ecclesfield Parish Council.

Cllr Hannah Kitching, who represents Penistone West ward and is the leader of the Liberal Democrats on Barnsley Council, said:

“This was a fantastic result for the Lib Dems in the Penistone & Stocksbridge constituency. We know we have excellent support from residents across the area who understand the benefit of having hard working, committed, local Lib Dem Councillors. We are very grateful to everyone who put national politics to one side and voted instead for real community champions. “The Liberal Democrats are now the official opposition to Labour on both Barnsley and Sheffield Councils. We will continue to scrutinise, challenge, and hold them to account – we won’t let you down.”

The situation of Covid on the 10th restricts volume of people at funerals but Paul’s Wife (Marie) very kindly found room for us. We at Crown Cars would like to thank Marie. How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Situations Vacant

We live in a smashing place, not only because of: our valued steelworks which have helped provide job security for generations ; our beautiful countryside-probably appreciated even more now; our good schools; our churches; our NHS surgeries; Stocksbridge Town Council; our district nurses; our shops; and our people. We work well together so our community groups thrive and grow. Over the decades we’ve observed a variety of reactions from people as we’ve spoken to them. As a result we’ve adopted various strategies- all beginning with respect for each person and trying to understand their point of view. Communication/dialogue is central. And a good dollop of patience helps. We usually meet bi-monthly for 2 hours, unless there is a request for a special meeting as there was when the Leisure Centre was faced with closure or when the Children’s Centre was going to be sited at Pot House Lane. All members of the community are always welcome. We aim to provide a safe and civilised space to facilitate learning and discussion. We often invite groups along to tell us about themselves. We invite individuals with special responsibilities to attend (like Veolia or The Planning Department at Sheffield City Council) so that we can quiz them. This has resulted in several groups first seeing the light of day here: Valley in Bloom, Stocksbridge Community Care Group, Upper Don Renewable Energy. We have always encouraged open and transparent debate. More recently, social media platforms fill us with dread. Criticisms can be crippling. If there is a genuine question it should be raised in the right forum. In the past couple of weeks members of the community who give their own time to make our Valley a better place to live have been hurt by ignorant remarks made. Everyone always deserves a considered right of reply. There have been suggestions made that volunteers who sit on Boards really do get a salary. In our experience, nothing could be further from the truth. Only in a tiny proportion of groups, often those employing people, might an individual be paid for his/her expertise. The motivation of the vast majority of volunteers is to make this Valley a better place to live. If you’ve heard something said about a person, tackle that person about it on a one-to- one to explain themselves. If you are not able to do that, then ask us to make it an agenda item. Most grief comes about due to misunderstandings. Also, within some funded groups there are restrictions which come with funding packages, of which we are not usually aware. Let’s be grateful that so many people are still prepared to pitch in. Since covid 19 hit, communications and explanations have necessarily suffered. Are we more irritable than usual? We had to postpone last Spring’s three SCF meetings on Progress made by the Town Fund; How we address growing mental health issues; and our MP’s visit to hear the concerns of the locals. We hope to re-instate those shortly. If you have questions or subjects you think it would be valuable to address in more depth, tell us. We offer a level playing field (rare in Stocksbridge!) and will listen to what is being said as well as having the opportunity to ask questions. Our meetings are advertised in Look Local and we’re looking forward to getting started up as soon as we’re allowed to meet again indoors.

UPDATE ON COUNCIL NEGOTIATIONS From Sheffield Labour 15th May, 2021 Sheffield Labour have today written to the party membership updating them about the on-going Council negotiations, stating the following: • Labour wants to find a deal that works in the interests of Sheffield – providing certainty and avoiding political deadlock. • The fairest way forward is a politically proportionate power-sharing arrangement, and talks are on-going with the Liberal Democrats and Green Party. • It has also been made clear that Labour want to move to the Committee System as soon as possible Letter to Labour Party Members Following the local elections last week, no one political party at Sheffield City Council has an outright majority. Labour won 41 out of 84 councillors. This is two short of a majority. There were some disappointing results, including the loss of former council leader Bob Johnson in Hillsborough. However there were also positives – our vote share across the city went up by over 5%, with the Liberal Democrat and Green vote both going down. Moreover in many seats we came tantalisingly close – losing Beighton by 44 votes, Beauchief & Greenhill by 38, and East Ecclesfield by just 20 votes. We believe that Sheffield’s interests must always come ahead of party politics, and as largest the political grouping on the council is incumbent on us to find a way forward. It is essential that as the city comes out of the pandemic, and continues to rebuild, that the council is not bogged down by political deadlock. Fundamentally we need to find a solution which puts Sheffield first and find a way of councillors pulling together for the benefit of the city. As such we have entered negotiations with the Liberal Democrats and Green Party to find a way forward. The sole Tory councillor will not be involved in any of these conversations.

20th May 2021

11

Why are we commenting now? Negotiations are still on-going, but there has been a lot of interest in the press and on social media with Green and Liberal Democrat councillors commenting on negotiations. In the interests of transparency, we want to let you know what some of our principles are within these talks: Moving to the Committee System now As the council is under no-overall control this presents an ideal opportunity for trialling a new way of working. We believe that fairest way forward is a politically proportionate committee model. Sheffield’s electorate has opted for a new Committee System of governance and whilst such a system does not need to be implemented until May 2022 – we believe a politically proportionate committee model should be piloted. Political proportionality across everything Crucially we want all committees to be politically proportionate as well as the Council Executive (previous Cabinet). This is the fairest way forward. Written agreement It is essential the council is not bogged down by political deadlock. We need to find a consensual way forward, but whatever is agreed it must be ensured that the council is able to carry out its important business. Quite simply, this is too important to leave to ‘handshake agreements’, Sheffield citizens must know publicly about whatever agreement is reached. We must be transparent. We won’t walk away from talks We need to put Sheffield first, and we will do everything we can to ensure that the council can move forward and get things done. We have made an offer of political proportionality for the Cabinet/Executive and an immediate move to the Committee system, but will not comment further on any policy options as talks are on-going. Thank you to the Lib Dems and Greens We want to thank opposition councillors for their efforts over the last week as negotiations continue. We will keep Labour Party Members updated on developments. Councillor Terry Fox, Labour Leader of Sheffield City Council Councillor Julie Grocutt, Labour Deputy Leader of Sheffield City Council

PLAN AHEAD AND AVOID BUSY TIMES AS RESTRICTIONS EASE FURTHER ‘Plan ahead and avoid busy times’ advise South Yorkshire’s transport bosses, as the easing of restrictions from Monday 17 May could see more people using buses, trams and trains. Passengers across the region are being reminded to check before they travel and to continue to follow government guidelines on safe travel, as demand for public transport is expected to increase when the next roadmap milestone is reached. The majority of South Yorkshire’s public transport services are now back to normal, operating to pre-pandemic timetables. From Monday 17 May, bus operators, in agreement with the Department for Transport, are making front facing seats available to passengers to increase capacity on board. Rear facing seats, face-to-face seating and seats nearest the driver may still be unavailable and standing is not permitted.

“As restrictions ease, allowing more people to come together, we expect that more people will be travelling to see friends and family, eat out, see a film or shop. This means public transport will be busier. The changes that bus operators are introducing from Monday will help to increase capacity making it easier for passengers to get on a bus and ensure people across South Yorkshire can get to where they need to be.” says Tim Taylor, Director of Customer Services at South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE).

Customers can also use operators’ online tools and apps to check how busy their bus is. You can find more information about how to travel safely at: https://www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/en-GB/ LandingPage/coronavirus

“The changes being made by bus operators will also mean passengers may find they need to sit next to someone on board. Harriet Drouin and Heather Lindley took on the second event in a series of running orienteering events in the peak district where navigation expertise and not getting lost is essential to be successful. The event was held around Harthill Moor and Bradford Dale, and took in undulating limestone dales and gritstone hills. Both ladies are still relatively new to the event format but performed admirably with Harriet claiming 5th place in the ladies over35 category and Heather claiming 7th place in the ladies over55 category. Youthful Oughtibridge power their way to semis Oughtibridge Ladies 5 Fowler 2, Kenyon 2, Longmore

Local Sport

Oughtibridge progressed to the semi finals with a dramatic late winner in a fantastic cup tie at the War Memorial. The hosts raced into a 2-0 lead through 16 year old Emily Fowler and leading scorer Millie Kenyon but any thoughts of this being a comfortable win were dispelled as it was back at 2-2 within minutes.

Motors

Yet again the Kenyon-Fowler combination put Oughtibridge 4-2 up by the half hour but were then pegged back by the interval with the score at a remarkable 4-4.

ERNEST THORPE

The goals dried up after half time as both defences tightened up with Oughtibridge dominating and Oadby & Wigston dangerous on the break but with 10 minutes left Kenyon’s low cross found the injury returning sub Annie Longmore steaming in to bury the winner to set up a home semi against Sherwood Ladies on Sunday 23 May.

Special mention must go to the trio of 16 year olds making a big impression, Emily Fowler, Molly Hutchinson and Maisie Brennan as the club strives to continue to play at a higher level than their village club status.

Sedgwicks triumph in the Jubilee Cup at the Golf Club

Belle Vue pegged them back but a big 5-1 from Justin Sedgmen and Kyle Howarth at the half-way point put them 23-19 up.

Father and son pairing, Ian and Matt Sedgwick, won the major competition of the weekend (15 May) at Stocksbridge Golf Club. The competition was tightly fought with 7 pairings finishing within two shots of each other in relatively benign weather conditions. The course had a good soaking from the week's inclement weather and so was a lot softer than the previous few weeks. The format for the competition was a better ball, stroke play pairs format, meaning that each team had two chances to score low at each hole. Ian and Matt finished with a highly credible net 59, both players scoring consistently well over the whole round. Brian Dobb and Neil Elliott finished in second place also with a net 59, but lost out to Ian and Matt on countback. Then came five pairings, all with a net 61, but it was Steve Hill and Kevin Pursall who took third place on countback. The heavy electrical storms of Tuesday evening put paid to the Dragons Section competing on Wednesday and the next mid-week competition came on the 13 May, with a Pro's Prize. Chay Murphy (10) won the stableford

Tigers fully deserved their league point after digging deep to keep the Aces at bay.

format competition with 38 points. Paul Cleary (28) and Shaun Stapleton (13) were close behind with 36 points, Paul clinching second place on countback. The Ladies Section competed twice over the week. The first time was on 14 May with the Ladies Back 9-hole competition. The Sedgwick family good run for the week started with Alison (15) winning the competition with 14 points. Hilja O'Sullivan (10) was second with 12 points and Margaret Pearson (11) was third with 11 points. Then on Sunday the Ladies competed in a Stableford competition with Kath Busfield (26) winning with 34 points. Ann Whitfield (25) was second with 32 points and Bev Sykes (27) was third with 30 points. Finally, the Gents Section competed for a Pro's Prize on the 16 May as well. Alf Pearson (26) found some time in between his duties as Chair of the Greens Committee to win the competition with 39 points. Pete Mannion (20) and Steve Clayton (13) both finished with 36 points, but Pete took second place on countback.

Reserve duo Josh Bates and James Wright teamed up for a 5-1 in Heat 2 to hand them a 7-5 lead.

But Belle Vue bounced back in Heat 10 when Brady Kurtz and Richie Worrall got a maximum to level it at 30-30. They followed that with a 4-2 and a 5-1 to go into a 39-33 lead with three races to go but Tigers notched a maximum of their own with the brilliant Holder teaming up with Sedgmen for a 5-1 to take it to a last heat decider. Belle Vue did enough in the last heat with Dan Bewley getting the better of Holder and Kurtz outpacing Sedgmen for the win. Tigers now turn their attentions to Thursday and the home clash with Peterborough. BELLE VUE 47: Dan Bewley 12+1, Brady Kurtz 9, Jye Etheridge 9+1, Richie Worrall 6+2, Charles Wright 5+1, Steve Worrall 3+1, Tom Brennan 3. SHEFFIELD 43: Jack Holder 19, Kyle Howarth 8+3, Justin Sedgmen 7+1, Josh Bates 5, James Wright 2+1, Troy Batchelor 2, Adam Ellis r/r.

Waterlogged pitch Chapeltown RBL’s final game of the spring league was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at the Civil Service ground. The game is hoping to be rearranged for this Sunday, 23 May to conclude the competition.

CHURCH WIN FIRST GAME BACK Penistone Church 2-0 Parkgate

Jordan Coduri 50, Andy Ring 84

Penistone Church 1st team returned to action last week with a friendly game against Parkgate. Church ran out 2-0 winners. First team coach Duncan Richards (pictured) told Look Local “It’s great to be back talking about football, it’s been a long time waiting. First and foremost it’s been brilliant to see our juniors get back to playing football, it’s a most important thing that our community has been reconnected with the football club and players, manager and volunteers have got back involved doing the things that they love, not only for physical wellbeing but mental wellbeing also.

)6(&

The lads pushed me to get back training a bit earlier than I was going to but I’m pleased we did we’ve had four brilliant training ses-

We’ve had one practice game against Parkgate, there was a bit of rustiness but it was great to win two-nil, great to get a clean sheet, which are good foundation for success and winning is a habit. It was nice to get back playing and it was nice to win.”

He raced in three successive races at the end with a programmed outing, a tactical substitution and a nominated race in Heat 15.

He continued “We have six quality preseason games lined up and we hope to get one arranged against a Barnsley XI as well ready to start the League campaign on July 31st. We hope by then we’re not talking about Covid 19 or risk assessments but focusing on a full season of football, the FA Vase, The FA Cup, the league campaign and hopefully we can pick up from where we left off and continue the progress we’ve show as a football club.”

Aussie ace Jack Holder was in stunning form on his Tru Plant Tigers debut with a 19-point haul from seven outings.

He said: “I didn’t hesitate when Steady (Simon Stead) asked me. I just said I’d do it, I feel fit and feel great on the bike and I just went out there and did my best for the team. “I’m just pleased to have raced for Sheffield and I’m really pleased we’re up and running in England. It’s been good to have some meetings in Poland but I’m also really pleased England has opened up. “I think when we are at full strength we will do well but there will be the occasional issue with Adam (Ellis) and myself where we have to miss a meeting, that’s just how it is. “As long as we’re in the play-offs we can go on and do something big in this league.” Ellis missed out because of isolation rules in Poland but is set to be taken off the list shortly.
