Community unites to resist losing open space Local people have again reacted strongly with around 220 representations to the Planning Inspector prior to the imminent Public Inquiry to decide on the future of the treasured local site. This tremendous level of response reflects the high level of feeling that local people in Stocksbridge, Deepcar and Bolsterstone have about this issue. Friends of Hollin Busk have joined with Miriam Cates MP, local City Councillors, Stocksbridge Town Councillors, Bolsterstone Community Group and the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England to oppose this application. Dr Peter Morgan, Chair of Friends of Hollin Busk, commented, "We have been opposing this development now for over 4 years. The community does not want houses built on this protected open space that is ap-
preciated for its green aspect and tremendous views across the valley." "A previous attempt to build on these fields was refused on appeal by the Secretary of State in 1990. Friends of Hollin Busk will be making strong presentations to the Planning Inspector at the Inquiry in June to convince him that the current appeal should also be refused in order that the approach to this site is consistent." The local community strongly opposes this raid on open green space which would "open the door" for potential further building on the surrounding green fields that provide green separation between the urban communities of Stocksbridge, Deepcar and Bolsterstone. The appeal by Hallam Land Management to build 85 houses on the protected green fields at Hollin Busk is due to start on the 22nd June, and will last for 8 days.

BIRTHDAY ‘BOY’ 93 Year-old Stocksbridge man visits gym on his birthday
Local News
Hillsborough
disaster cover-up payout
Over 600 people will receive damages from South Yorkshire Police and West Midlands Police as part of a settlement over the cover-up following the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, in which 96 football fans were unlawfully killed. The settlement, bringing to a close large-scale group litigation which began in 2015, was reached at the end of April but could not be made public until the end of the criminal trial of a former police solicitor and two former police officers. The 601 people who will receive damages include survivors of the disaster and family members of those who were killed. The total sum to be paid has not yet been agreed. In a statement, Saunders Law, which represented 219 of the individual claimants, said: “We trust that this settlement will put an end to any fresh attempts to rewrite the record and wrongly claim that there was no cover-up.
Geoff Leavitt celebrated his 93rd birthday with a daily workout in Stocksbridge Leisure Centre’s gym. And all Geoff 's ‘gym buddies’ presented him with a Birthday bun to enjoy with a coffee! Geoff told Look Local "I really enjoy coming to the Leisure Centre as everyone is so friendly and welcoming. I have made lots of friends and can't thank
people enough for their birthday wishes on my 93rd birthday!" Geoff goes to both the gym and has a swim too, and has been at the Centre since it's reopening in January 2014. Andy Clarke from SLC said "Geoff typifies exactly what this Centre is all about - an accessible community facility aimed at improving people's physical health and mental wellbeing - Geoff 's a true inspiration!!"
SHEFFIELD COUNCIL CONSIDERS SMOKING BAN ON PAVEMENTS OUTSIDE CAFES, PUBS, BARS AND RESTAURANTS Sheffield Council is looking at whether it should follow other local authorities in introducing a smoking ban on pavements outside cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants.
As a result, several councils in England - including in Northumberland, Durham, North Tyneside, Newcastle and Manchester - brought in rules to stop smokers lighting up on tables outside.
Al fresco dining has boomed in the UK with Covid-19 restrictions and sunny weather encouraging more people to make use of quiet streets and pavements outside businesses.
Councillor Angela Argenzio, licensing committee member, said the licensing department and Sheffield Council was looking into the issue and whether to update its licensing policy too.

Man 'dies' of heart attack on golf course before three heroes nearby revive him By Alex Grove, Yorkshire Live
A dad was brought back to life by three "heroes" after he collapsed at a golf course. John Anderson fell to the ground shortly after the first hole at Hillsborough Golf Club in Sheffield on May 26. The 63-year-old was trying out the course and considering becoming a member when he started having a cardiac arrest, YorkshireLive reported. Three nearby people quickly rushed over to help John. His son Callum, 27, said: "His heart did stop and out of the three people there two of them knew CPR so they started giving CPR and rang an ambulance. "They kept giving him CPR until the ambulance arrived and they managed to stabilise him. "When we got to hospital we were told that without these three heroes my dad wouldn't be here. "It's unbelievable. It's one of the most unluckiest things to have a heart attack but it was also so lucky someone was there who knew CPR."
John is now recovering at his home in Hillsborough after having a defibrillator fitted into his chest on June 1.
Callum is meeting the trio who saved his dad's life on Friday for a pint as he admitted he owes them a debt of gratitude for "keeping his family whole". However, the potential repercussions of what could have happened have spurred him on to raise money for a defibrillator to be fitted at the golf club. On a GoFundMe page which has already raised £650, Callum wrote: "I want to help provide them with some money towards a defibrillator. "This was hands down the worst feeling in my life and I wouldn’t want anyone else to go through this. "If we can help to provide Hillsborough golf club with some funds towards one then, maybe, we could all be contributing to saving a life if this happens again." You can donate to Callum's GoFundMe page https://gofund.me/b95a7e9f

Fundraiser’s PACE themselves over three challenging peaks 6 Fundraisers 3 Peaks 24 Hours
Epic fundraising challenge for Paces completed Six fundraisers have completed an epic fundraising challenge raising over £5,000 for Paces, the specialist centre, charity and school for individuals with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders. The group completed the National Three Peaks which involves travelling between and trekking to the top of the highest peaks of Wales, England and Scotland in less than 24 hours – a total of 42 kilometres with 3,000 metres of ascent. Starting at 5am from Sheffield on Saturday (5 June), they travelled to and climbed Snowdon, then got on the minibus to Cumbria and scaled Scafell Pike before travelling to the Highlands and reaching the summit of Ben Nevis as the sun rose on Sunday morning.

BOLSTERSTONE VILLAGE FAYRE It is with regret that we must inform you that for the second year running Bolsterstone Village Fayre will not be taking place. Obviously this decision has not been taken lightly as we did not want another enforced break in this much enjoyed and long held traditional Annual event.
Got something to say? Email us at news@looklocal.org.uk Publication subject to space and content. Publishing does not mean we agree with the content.
The Fayre is the result of many months of planning with an enormous amount of helpers involved. Over the months we have kept in touch with those who bring our fairground attractions and we did feel, as they did, that if the Government's roadmap went as planned we might have been able to put together the event given sufficient time. However, we are now mindful of the Indian variant which is causing concern. We have also taken into consideration that under the circumstances some people, including our most valued helpers, may still feel tentative venturing out amid the uncertainty. We therefore reached the sad conclusion that we had no alternative but to cancel the event once again.
Organising an event? Tell us about it at news@looklocal.org.uk Publication subject to space and content.
The thoughts foremost in our minds is the safety of our helpers and visitors who’s never failing support of the event has always been greatly appreciated. Let us hope we can all keep safe, keep looking forward to better times ahead and the continuation of our Village Fayre in 2022. Carol Webster and Kathryn Cooke. St. Mary's Bolsterstone Village Fayre Committee.

Students bring Libraries to life Barnsley College Learning for Living and Work (LfLW) students have been working with Community Artist and LfLW Placement Teacher, Becky Newbould, and Community Musician, Matt Laurie, to bring a traditional story to life for Barnsley Libraries. Matt and Becky have been funded by Youth Music and Barnsley Libraries to work alongside LfLW students to create an accompanying soundtrack and original artwork to the story The Little Blue Bird, which will play across the Barnsley Library sites. Over the course of three weekly sessions, Matt joined each group online, transforming Microsoft Teams into a recording studio telling the story along to a soundtrack. Matt said: “Students added narration, sound effects, instruments and music to the collaborative soundscape. Together with original artwork made by College students adding visuals to further tell the story.” Becky added: “We are hoping that our version of the story can be enjoyed by people across all Barnsley Library sites. The story explores themes of loneliness and the fear of not being
able to do things others can and shows how a community can come together to support each other. We know that this resonates with the students and hope that others can relate to this too, especially now.” Barnsley College LfLW tutor, Gavin Mitchel, said: “Becky and Matt were brilliant with the students. They made sure that they were all involved, and they loved every aspect of the project; the fun story, using instruments, using iPads, and making different sounds. “They loved hearing their sounds being played back to them and are excited to hear and see the end result in the future. All the students and staff looked forward to every session we had with Becky and Matt and we really hope we can do something else together soon.” Keep an eye and an ear out at the Barnsley Library sites to experience the finished project. Leading outdoor retailer opens new store at Fox Valley The outdoor retailer Mountain Warehouse has opened the company’s latest store at Fox Valley in north Sheffield today (Friday 4th June). Mountain Warehouse was founded in 1997 and is the UK’s leading outdoor retailer with 250 stores across the UK, serving more than 4 million customers every year – the new Fox Valley store has created 10 new jobs in the area. The company’s fit out team has transformed the former M&Co unit at the award- winning shopping centre into the new 6,174 sq. ft. Mountain Warehouse. With an increase in walking, hiking and staycations over the last 12 months outdoor stores have fared well throughout the pandemic. Mountain Warehouse founder, Mark Neale, said, “We’re proud to be opening our newest Mountain Warehouse store in Fox Valley and excited to share our passion for adventure and great value outdoor gear for all the family with this community.”
Estates Director at Dransfield Properties which owns and manages Fox Valley, James Shepherd, said: “We are delighted that Mountain Warehouse has joined the line up at Fox Valley. The company has stores at our sites in Gainsborough and Morpeth and we are pleased they are opening a third store with us here in Sheffield. “We are in a great outdoor location here for walking, cycling and climbing at the gateway to the Peak District and are confident that the new store will be a really popular addition to the centre.” Fox Valley celebrates its fifth birthday this month with a special weekend Food Fair planned for the 12th and 13th June. Further announcements will be made in the coming weeks about other new stores due to open at the centre later in the summer. GRASSROOTS COACHES HIGHLY VALUED BY PARENTS
Grassroots coaches are highly valued by the British public show new stats, but concerns from coaches remain says lead body - Majority of Brits believe coaches will help nation become fitter and more active - 9 in 10 coaches are concerned about the poor mental and physical health of participants The role that coaches play in inspiring people to be active will become increasingly significant as we emerge from the coronavirus crisis, with 72% of the British public saying that coaches and instructors will be important in supporting and encouraging people to get back into physical activity after the pandemic.
The coronavirus crisis has had a huge impact on the nation’s activity levels, with 1.2 million more adults now classed as ‘inactive’ (up 2.6% to 27.1%) and less than half (44.9%) of children and young people meeting the Chief Medical Officer’s guidelines of 60 minutes a day. The pandemic has also impacted the nation’s mental well-being, with new data from UK Coaching showing that nearly 9 in 10 coaches (87%) are concerned about the poor mental and physical health of participants. Additionally, nearly half of all coaches (47%) said one of the biggest challenges currently facing them is motivating people to return to sport and physical activity.
Coaches will be central to the nation’s restart, with research conducted by YouGov on behalf of UK Coaching revealing that 7 in 10 adults (70%) believe grassroots coaches and instructors are important in helping Britain become a fitter and more active society.
And the vital work that coaches deliver is being understood and appreciated more than ever, with over two thirds (69%) of the nation believing it is important for society to value the role that coaches and instructors play in keeping local communities active. Yet concerns amongst coaches remain and UK Coaching, the lead charity for coaches in Britain, fear that coaches aren’t receiving the support they need in order to continue playing this vital role in communities. With the Covid-19 pandemic causing many people to consider the need to be fitter and more active, nearly 6 in 10 (57%) of coaches surveyed are concerned about the increased cost of facilities and almost half (48%) said they needed to offer lower priced activities to enable wider access. Access to funding and facilities also remains a barrier, with 40% of those surveyed raising concerns about the need for updated facilities in encouraging their local community to return, as well as increased access to funding for equipment (34%) and to reopen local facilities (31%).

The Club's Dragons Society also enjoyed League Team success away to Hillsborough on Friday 4 June. The winning aggregate score in the stableford format was 227 points to Hillsborough and 240 points to Stocksbridge. The winning pairs in the match were Dave Stringer (section Captain) with Bob
Mason; Kel Meegan and Noel Weaver; Les Wright and Pete Hodkin; Sandy Murphy and Frank Milnes. Mick Siddall and John Moss halved their game and Ian Batty and Roy Myers were the only pairing to lose. It's a quick turnaround for the Dragons with their next League match on 7 June against Silkstone at home. At the Golf Club the Dragons Section also competed for the Anniversary Trophy on 2 June. Charlie Dale (26) won the stableford format with 36 points. Three other players also scored 36 points, but lost out to Charlie on countback. They were, in order of placing, Frank Hines, John Moss and Les Wright. The Gents Section then competed for the Monthly MidWeek medal on 3 June with Bradley Lawton (16) winning comfortably with a net 64. Ash Howe (6) was second with a net 66. Richard Shepherd (12) and Mick Hulbert (13) both had net 67s, but Richard took third place on countback.
Saturday 5 June saw the Gents Section compete for the Monthly June Medal and with the good weather continuing there was a decent field of 90 players entering. Scoring was generally very good and Jack Carnall (8) came out on top with a net 61. Jack managed to do what all amateur golfers like to achieve, a round with no 6s on the card. In fact, he only dropped 4 shots on the whole round and also managed a birdie 2 on the 13th. Pete Hodkin (20) and Eddie Smith (21) both shot net 62s, but Pete took second place on countback, a birdie 3 on the 18th helping to clinch it for him. One final note, Dave Buxton achieved what many golfers aspire to during the Pro's Prize competition on 30 May. He scored a hole in one on the 17th and was helped to celebrate by many members suddenly turning up for the obligatory drinks on him...... the power of social media!
Steels league restructed That means 58 clubs have been split across three divisions for the NPL at step 4 – 19 each in NPL East and NPL Midlands, and 20 in NPL West. The same 22 clubs remain in the NPL Premier Division as the past two seasons.
The Northern Premier League, which local nonleague Stocksbridge Park Steels compete in will operate the new eighth division at step 4, which was delayed from last summer due to COVID.
It means a total of 20 new clubs joining the NPL for 2021/22, including some familiar faces and some new ones. Stocksbridge have been placed in the East division with the following sides;
NPL East – Bridlington Town, Brighouse Town, Cleethorpes Town, Dunston, Frickley Athletic, Hebburn Town, Lincoln United, Liversedge, Marske United, Ossett United, Pickering Town, Pontefract Collieries, Sheffield, Shildon, Stocksbridge Park Steels, Stockton Town, Tadcaster Albion, Worksop Town, Yorkshire Amateur. Tigers suffer narrow defeat to Wolves TROY Batchelor continued his fine form but couldn’t prevent Sheffield from slipping to a 5040 defeat at Wolverhampton.
remaining but Batchelor and Holder teamed up well for the 5-1. Batchelor said: “Things are getting better for me and I’m starting to get more into it.
Tigers were dealt a serious blow in the build-up to the meeting when Kyle Howarth, a former Wolves rider, withdrew with a wrist injury sustained at Leicester but later confirmed nothing is broken.
“It was tough out there but I went well and I enjoyed it. “I’m not riding as much as the other guys, I made a decision not to ride abroad because of my eight-month old son and I didn’t want to leave him but I’m open to more bookings for sure.
Batchelor reeled off three straight wins and ended the meeting with a 5-1 alongside Jack Holder. A 3-3 in Heat 13 made sure of all three points for the home side when Luke Becker and Sam Masters packed in behind Jack Holder to make the score 45-33.
“It’s a shame we couldn’t win and we had a few crashes but we dug deep and worked hard. I’m looking forward to more meetings soon.”
To their credit Sheffield stayed in contention and pushed Wolves hard over the first half of the meeting.
WOLVERHAMPTON 50: Sam Masters 11+1, Ryan Douglas 10, Luke Becker 9+2, Nick Morris 9+2, Broc Nicol 9, Tom Bacon 2, Rory Schlein R/R.
The combination of Adam Ellis and Holder produced some fine race wins, particularly when Ellis became the first rider to beat home star Sam Masters with a clever ride under pressure in Heat 7. Sheffield were reduced to five riders when Josh Bates was ruled out of the meeting after a Heat 4 crash when he locked up in the first turn and crashed - causing home man Tom Bacon to fall too.

HOWZAT - HIBBERT TAKES 5 The 1st XI travelled to Sheffield Centralians looking to make it four wins from four in the league. With the sun beaming down, skipper Andrew Hibbert won his fourth consecutive toss and elected to bat first.
Matt Price and Jack Newton opened the batting and the pair got off to another really good start. Both of them looked positive and got on top of the bowling. The pair put on a commanding 68 before Price was cleaned bowled for a well made 25. Newton, was soon stumped for a brilliant 59, his consecutive 50.
FIVE WICKETS: Joe Hibbert picked up 5-4 with the ball.
Ben Cherry and Chris Pickford we’re brought to the crease with the 1st XI 99-3 and needing a partnership. The pair batted superbly and made it look effortless. They brought up their 50 partnership before Pickford was run out for 25. Cherry would fall with four overs to go for 40. Two really important knocks for the stage of the innings. A late cameo of 27 from Steve Perry took the score to 203-9, which was a commanding total batting first

on a wicket that offered a little bit to the bowlers.
Skipper Andy Hibbert took the new ball and struck with his second delivery, a perfect start. He was backed up well by Jake Vickers who on another day could have picked up a couple of wickets. Cents started to build a little partnership and frustrated until Joe Hibbert came into the attack and broke the partnership in his second over. He then took two more wickets in the same over. Three wickets in one over changed the score from 52-1, to 53-4. Back on top, Hibbert couldn’t stay out the game and in the next over he produced a run-out with Cents in serious trouble. Hibbert picked up two more wickets to claim figures of 5-4, a brilliant effort. Liam Grayson, as always picked up a wicket with his quality variation. It was Jack Newton who finished the innings picking up the last wicket to give the 1st XI a 105 run victory. Four from four for the 1st XI who have started the 2021 season brilliantly.
Stocksbridge 2nd XI hosted Ridgeway this weekend, looking to build on a resounding victory last time out. Captain Thwaites won the toss, electing to bat and keep faith with his batting unit. Stocksbridge started well, with opening pair Firth and Ogley setting an excellent foundation. Firth unfortunately fell for 23, 1 short of the 50 partnership with Ogley. Following this Stocksbridge suffered a collapse, crumbling from 49-0 to 49-3. Ant Siddall and Jack Reeves looked to rebuild the innings, with both batsmen moved into double figures with ease. Reeves continued to score freely, moving in the 20’s, however Siddall was unfortunately dismissed for 13. Murfin and Thwaites both scored in double figures to try and move the total towards something respectable, however Stocksbridge were well below par, eventually being bowled out for just 119. Reeves (27) and Firth (23) the top scorers, with only 3 other batsmen reaching double figures. Stockbridge required a superb effort in the field to pull off an unlikely victory.

Ridgeway’s reply got off to a good start, with both openers swinging freely. Thwaites bowled captain Cooper with the first ball of his 2nd over and Stocksbridge were hopeful that was a sign of things to come. However, Payne for Ridgeway was a pain for Stocksbridge, hitting numerous boundaries and putting his side in a commanding position. Ageless Les Harris came into the attack for Brearley, and quickly looked in control. Ridgeway were well up with the run rate and looked to be cruising to a simple victory. Some tight middle overs by Hargreaves and Harris, followed by a couple of wickets by Harris swung the tie back towards 50/50. However, Alistair Payne was still at the crease for Ridgeway, looking to see his side to victory. Following a couple of very expensive overs, the victory was all but sealed for Ridgeway. Thwaites came back into the attack and took another wicket and Ant Siddall eventually dismissed opener Payne for 68, however Ridgeway cruised to a 4-wicket victory.
