He has since been released under investigation while officers investigate the cause of the collision.

Carers week celebrated at nursing home Staff and residents at Belmont House Care & Nursing Home celebrated carers week by thanking care staff with treats and chocolates. Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. Country Court has taken the opportunity to thank its care teams and share messages of appreciation left by family and friends. One family member from Belmont House Care & Nursing Home said, “My husband and I have all three of our parents resident at Belmont. My mum has Alzheimer’s and has been living in Belmont for over a year now, we are impressed with the home and the care that she receives. So, when it became apparent that both my in-laws, who are 92 and 90, need-

ed full-time care in March this year, we didn’t hesitate to ring Belmont and arrange for them to join her.” Residents wrote thank you notes to care staff and handed out gifts of sweets and chocolates. “Carers Week has been a wonderful opportunity to thank our staff and show them that we appreciate everything they do.” Said Home Manager Joanne Coldwell. “This last year has been difficult for everyone. Our staff have had so much to cope with, so it’s important to take the opportunity to show our appreciation and let people know how much they are valued.” For more information about life at Belmont House Care & Nursing Home in Stocksbridge, please contact Home Manager Joanne Coldwell on 0114 2831 030 or email belmonthouse@countrycourtcare.com.

‘Now we remember the loved ones we lost’ As a memorial for local Covid victims the West Ecclesfield Ward Parish Council, covering the Grenoside area, along with Rotary Club of Wortley has placed 16 whisky barrel tubs with a selection of flowers. With the support of West Ecclesfield local Parish Councillors, Mike Levery, Ann Whittaker, Alan Hooper and former Parish Councillor Adam Hurst, Sheffield Council awarded a local grant of £800.00. Working with the local Councillors, this project was taken on board with Peter Perry and members from the Rotary Club of Wortley. 8 empty whisky barrels were purchased and cut in half, painted and plaques fitted by local farmer Andy Hardman, Hallfield Head Farm, Grenoside. The Rotary Club have sited 16 locations and planted flowers in the half whisky tubs and placed plaques on them in remembrance of the families who

suffered during the Covid pandemic. We feel sure the local residents will respect these tubs in the various locations and keep them in good condition. Comment from Steven Patterson, President, Rotary Club of Wortley “Covid has affected communities all over the UK, and we are united through loss and grief. By remembering, we cannot change the past, but we can acknowledge its pain and commit to building a better future together”. Currently the Rotary Club of Wortley is in discussion with the local councillors to become involved with future projects in the community. Anyone, who wishes to support future projects, please contact: Steven Patterson, President of the Rotary Club of Wortley Email: patterson20712@gmail. com

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Get up and go After the struggles and stressfulness of coping with Covid, many of us will be hoping for a better future and as the sun tentatively emerges we may feel excited as it warms our hearts and bodies, Do we want our lives to return to the old “normal”? Or has the time come to make some changes and maybe do something different and meaningful for ourselves and others? We’ve recently celebrated Volunteers Week and here at Greave House Farm Trust we have some wonderful volunteers that have discovered the joy of working together outdoors, surrounded by beautiful countryside. Volunteering can enrich our lives in many ways from making new, supportive friends to growing new interests, not to mention improving our mental and physical health. There are always more jobs to do than volunteers, so you are more than welcome to come along and get involved on Thursdays or second Saturday every month. If it feels a bit daunting to just turn up to somewhere strange, give me a call or text on 07724505911 and I can arrange to meet you and show you round or answer any questions.

Club Captain wins two-day competition at the Golf Club Alan Revill, the Captain at Stocksbridge Golf Club, won the Stanley Crawshaw Cup over the weekend of 12 & 13 June. The two-day competition is played in a stroke play format and Alan was 3 shots clear in the end with a net 65 and 67 totalling 132 shots. John Slodyczak came second with a net score of 135 and Ian Sedgwick was third with 139 shots. A special mention should go to Charlie Binns, a junior member of the Club, who came fourth, also with 139 shots, but losing out to Ian on countback. Charlie's Dad, Simon, made it an even better family weekend by finishing in fifth place with 140 shots.

Over the same weekend the lower handicap golfers competed in the Scratch Cup, a strokeplay format where each golfer plays with no handicap allowance. Unsurprisingly the Club's League Team players dominated the competition and Danny Costello won with a gross score of 140 shots over the two rounds. Danny's cards included 6 birdies, 2 on Saturday and 4 on Sunday. League team Captain, Liam O'Sullivan, was second with a gross 142 and rounds that had 2 eagles and 3 birdies. Peter Finney was third with a gross 144. The League team players were still on a high after recording their fifth consecutive win of the season on 9

June playing at home to Lindrick. Lindrick Golf Club is one the premier courses in the whole of England. It was the home course where England and Ireland beat the USA in the Ryder Cup in 1957. Lindrick fielded a very strong team with their players having handicaps of 0 to +3, so the victory by the Stocksbridge team was all the more impressive. The individual games went as follows - Andrew Finney (0) won by 1 up; Liam O'Sullivan (2) won by 3 and 2; and Danny Costello (3) won by 4 and 3. Luke Bisatt (4) in his first outing for the League team lost 5 and 3, but he will have gained great experience from the opportunity. The result keeps Stocksbridge

clear in second place, only three points behind Lindrick but with a match in hand. The Ladies Section competed in their weekly 9 hole challenge. This week Bev Sykes (11) won with 14 points. Margaret Pearson (12) was second with 13 points and Sue Clegg (21) was third with 9 points. The Dragons Section continued their fine League Team form with a home victory against Silkstone on 7 June. The six pairings completed a clean sweep against their opponents and Section Captain, Dave Stringer was delighted with the result. The successful pairings were Dave Stringer/ Roy Myers, Pete Hodkin/

Alf Pearson, Ian Batty/ Bob Mason, Noel Weaver/ John Moss, Kel Meegan/ Dave Broadhurst, Sandy Murphy/ Bill Boucher. Later in the week the Dragons competed for the Zigmund Toczek Trophy, a strokeplay competition. Ian Batty (17) won the competition with a net 60. Dennis Haley (15) was second with a net 63 and Frank Milnes (21) was third with a net 64.

First female DELAY TO chief constable LOCKDOWN Ms Poultney has been confirmed in the role by South Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner, Dr Alan Billings, following approval of the appointment by the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Panel at a meeting earlier.

LIFTING

It's the first time a woman will take on the top job in the South Yorkshire force.

The Government’s final stage of the roadmap out of lockdown planned for 21 June has been delayed until 19 July.

The next chief constable of South Yorkshire Police has been confirmed as Lauren Poultney, the force's current deputy chief.

Ms Poultney, who has been a police officer for 23 years, is a married mother-of-one who began her policing career in 1998 with Humberside Police and joined South Yorkshire Police in 2017 as assistant chief constable.

All legal limits on social contact were due to be lifted in a week’s time, but Prime Minister Boris Johnson has warned that with the number of cases growing by 64 per cent per week and in some areas it is doubling, it’s better to be cautious and not move out of Step 4 until more people have had the Covid vaccine. He also talked about how the average number of people being admitted to hospital has increased by 50% per week on week and by 61 per cent in the North West with his main concern being that it’s possible that ‘the virus will outrun the vaccines and that thousands more deaths would ensue that could otherwise have been avoided.”

Dr Billings said: "Lauren Poultney will be South Yorkshire’s first female chief constable and I am looking forward to working closely with her as the force continues to strive to become an outstanding force across all areas of its activity."

For those planning a wedding though, there will be a relaxation and from 21 June they can go ahead with more than 30 guests even though restrictions will remain. The same relaxation will also apply to wakes and commemorative events.

Ms Poultney said: "I am incredibly proud to be appointed as chief constable for South Yorkshire. I’ve been here now for four years and witnessed the pride and passion local people have for the area. "I want to ensure we harness this and deliver the outstanding police service they desire."

Barnsley College is leading the way in Sport Barnsley College is leading the way with supporting talented athletes in education in England, having been accredited by an innovative Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) initiative. The Sport England-backed programme provides young sportspeople with the opportunity to gain qualifications alongside their sporting pursuits, follow other interests and further their personal development. By formally recognising an institution’s commitment to supporting student athletes, the TASS Dual Career Accreditation Scheme aims to allow athletes to reach their potential in education alongside achieving success in their sport. Luke Forgione, Performance and Athlete Development Co-ordinator at the College, said: “We are really pleased to have been awarded Dual Career Accreditation from TASS. This further illustrates the College’s commitment to support students to achieve academic and sporting excellence. “Receiving this accreditation from TASS demonstrates the Colleges' ability to support elite athletes at the College with achieving a

balance between-existing athletic support with academia. As a College, we are willing to help facilitate talented athletes in balancing sport and study, allowing talented athletes to make an informed choice when selecting an institution at which to continue their education. We also help to a wider network of partners, dedicated to helping talented athletes reach their academic and sporting goals. “This is a brand-new scheme for 2021/22 academic year that will provide elite sporting students, who represent their National Governing Bodies at a national level an opportunity to join the TASS Scheme. The scheme will provide students wrap-around support, as well as opportunities for professional development and the flexibility to pursue dual career. “As an establishment, we are ecstatic to be recognised for our ability to provide academic support and flexibility to talented athletes.” Guy Taylor, TASS National Director, added: “We’re delighted to be awarding TASS Dual Career Accreditation to colleges and universities across England. Dual career

support is at the forefront of what TASS does and that’s why the Accreditation Scheme is so important for us in recognising those institutions who place precedence on their athletes’ education too. “Congratulations to Barnsley College and we look forward to working alongside many more outstanding colleges and universities in the near future.”

In his announcement, Mr. Johnson emphasised how much vaccination reduces transmission and how two doses provides a very high degree of protection against serious illness and death. He announced that by 19 July the aim is for two thirds of the adult population including everyone over 50 to have had 2 doses of a Covid vaccine, as well as all those who are vulnerable, all the frontline health and care workers and everyone over 40 who received their first dose by mid-May. Offering 2 doses for those over 40 will be accelerated and the target to give every adult in the country a first dose by 19th July including young people over the age of 18 will be brought forward. 23 and 24 year olds will be invited to book a vaccination from today to reduce the risk of transmission among groups that mix the most. The situation will be monitored every day and if after 2 weeks it is felt that the risk has diminished proceeding to step 4 and full opening will take place sooner. The government also emphasised today that we will not need any more than weeks to achieve what’s needed. This all means that the current legal limits on social contact will remain in place for at least another five weeks. People will still be able to meet indoors with up to 6 people or 2 households (each household can include a support bubble) and have outdoor gatherings of up to 30 people. Meeting friends in bars, restaurants and parks can all still continue of course and at www.welcometosheffield.co.uk there’s a What’s On guide to Covid-safe summer events and activities available for people of all ages. Our Libraries will continue to offer a browsing and a pre booked computers service. The details are here

Barnsley Sports Academy offers fantastic facilities and a team of expert and specialist coaches supporting talented sports performers in any discipline. Academies include Football, Esports, Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Refereeing and Individual Athlete Academy. For more information on Barnsley Sports Academy visit www.barnsley.ac.uk/bsa or email info@barnsley.ac.uk

Indoor and outdoor events, including live performances, sporting events and businesses will still be able to take place with Covid-secure measures in place. Indoor and outdoor attractions and hospitality venues including cinemas, theatres, concert halls, bowling alleys, museums, children’s indoor play areas, zoos, theme parks will all remain open, as well as saunas and steam rooms.

Barnsley College transforms the lives of students, staff and communities. It offers a range of full and part-time courses, Access to HE courses, university-level courses and Higher Apprenticeships to support students to transform their life by gaining new skills and qualifications. For more information visit: www.barnsley.ac.uk

In terms of travel, holiday accommodation will remain open (including hotels and B&Bs) and can be used by groups of up to 6 people or two households including a bubble, if eligible. Overnight stays in England are allowed but only for up to 6 people or 2 households. International travel will still be allowed with a traffic light system that must be followed when returning depending on whether people are returning from a green, amber or red list country.

Attendance at funerals will continue to depend on how many people a Covid-secure venue can safely accommodate. In Sheffield City Councilrun funeral buildings this will remain at 25 mourners for indoor services. There will continue to be no limits on the number of people who can attend outdoor burial services and more details are on our affected services page

Greg Fell, Director of Public Health for Sheffield said: “It’s the right decision to delay this final stage of the plan. We’ve all worked incredibly hard to get to this point but we mustn’t get it wrong now when new variants are spreading across the UK, mutating and doing their best to survive.”

Hibbert and Hargreaves star with the ball

S O S

Stocksbridge 1st XI travelled to Stanton-in-the-Peak where Sheffield Super Kings hosted this top of the table clash. With both sides unbeaten it looked set to be a tight game. Skipper Andy Hibbert lost the toss and the 1st were elected to field first. It was the captain who led from the front, taking a wicket in his very first over to get off to the perfect start. Hibbert senior was on fire and was backed up brilliantly at the other end by Jake Vickers. The opening pair didn’t give the Super Kings batsmen many chances to score freely. Hibbert picked up five brilliant wickets for just 18 runs. A superb spell of bowling from the captain who was leading from the front. Vickers was just as good and picked up two wickets for 29. The score was 34-7 with the 1st completely in control. Super kings number 8 and number 9 dug in and battled back but Joe Hibbert and Liam Grayson bowled well with control and both picked up a wicket each to finish the innings off. Jake Vickers completely the innings with a good run out after some tidy keeping from Ben Lyons. Super Kings 76 all out, a brilliant bowling and fielding performance once again.

Stocksbridge’s bowling effort did not get off to the desired start, with a combination of poor bowling and a lack of fortune, resulting in Coal Aston racing to 42-0 after 8 overs. Les Harris came into the attack for Brearley, immediately looking in control and dangerous. Paul Hargreaves also came into the attack, immediately removing young opener Will Ross. Harris and Hargreaves then ripped through the remainder of the Coal Aston top order, with the visitors crumbling from 46-0 to 68-5. Hargreaves had already picked up 4 wickets in a superb spell, with Harris claiming the scalp of number 3 batsman Scott.

brilliant form with the bat. From 51-3 to 66-6 losing a few quick wickets, was the game going to swing back in Super Kings favour? Joe Hibbert joined Will Cavanagh at the crease and Hibbert hit two boundaries to take the scores level. It was Cavanagh

out. Captain Thwaites lost the toss but was more than happy to be put into bat. Young Jack Firth and Chris Ogley continued at the top of the order and put together a useful 34 run partnership before Firth was dismissed for 17. This brought Bob Newton to the who hit the winning runs with crease, looking to avenge his duck a lovely fine cut for four to take last time out. the ‘green army’ over the line. A Newton looked in control, an‘brilliant’ 4 wicket victory which choring the Stocksbridge innings makes it five out of five. The good and ensuring the scoreboard kept start to the season continues. ticking over. Ogley fell for 22, bringing Jack Reeves to the middle. Reeves fired a quick and entertaining 26 before edging onto his own stumps, with the score now 99-3. Jack Murfin added 17 before being clean bowled, with Stocksbridge in a strong position at 136-4 with plenty of overs to spare. Newton was eventually dismissed for a well-made 45, and when Cameron Illingworth-Ralph fell 3 balls later, there were signs of a collapse on the horizon. However, Matt Hague (12*) and captain Thwaites (16*) both finished not out and propelled Stocksbridge to a very good total of 180-6 from Stocksbridge hosted 3rd placed their 40 overs. A good all-round Coal Aston this weekend, looking team effort with the bat. to bounce back from a disappointing defeat to Ridgeway last time

Stocksbridge 180-6 2nd XI (B Newton 45, J Reeves 26) – Coal Aston 175-8 (P Hargreaves 5-40)

With Coal Aston floundering at 68-5 at the halfway stage, requiring well over 100 runs to win, you’d think that Stocksbridge would’ve made easy work of sealing the victory, however that was not the case! Youngsters Blakeley and Rabjohn came in at 6 and 7 respectively and put the top order to shame, hitting boundaries to all parts of the ground. Following a couple of costly dropped catches and some poor pieces of fielding, the comeback really was on for Coal Aston. Blakeley and Rabjohn both moved into the 20s, with Coal Aston now requiring just under 50 runs to win. Captain Thwaites brought himself back into the attack and took the all-important wicket of Blakeley, breaking an excellent partnership of 65. Thwaites and Harris kept things tight in the final 10 overs, leaving Coal Aston with a mountain to climb. However, Rabjohn was still going strong and looked in fine form. Paul Hargreaves came back into the attack to bowl his final 2 overs and removed the prized scalp of Rabjohn for a wellmade 46. Coal Aston now required 28 off less than 3 overs. Following a couple of lusty blows, the final over was certainly interesting, however Stocksbridge prevailed with Coal Aston falling 5 runs short. A great game for the neutral with Stocksbridge delighted to come away with the 20 points. Hargreaves the star man wit the ball, picking up his 3rd 5 wicket haul for Stocksbridge, finishing with 5-40 from his 10 overs.
