LOCKDOWN LIFTING steels ready for pre-season - PAGE 16
Second dose push - PAGE 2
Decision to be made next week Boris Johnson has set out government plans to lift the remaining Covid restrictions in England. The prime minister said he hoped most legal restrictions and guidance in England - in place to stop the spread of the virus - would be removed from 19 July.
Although the prime minister spoke about the importance of "reopening our society" on 19 July, confirmation of the lifting of restrictions and guidance on that date won't actually happen until 12 July, when the latest Covid health data will be reviewed.
What did the PM say?
As Mr Johnson was speaking, the Health Secretary Sajid Javid outlined the plans in Parliament - describing them as the "restoration of freedoms".
At a Downing Street briefing, Mr Johnson said the government was looking to "move away from legal restrictions" and would instead allow people "to make their own informed decisions about how to manage the virus".
•
Social distancing/face coverings
•
Capacity caps on businesses will be lifted
its on named visitors to care homes will be removed.
•
No limits on social contact
•
•

Hospitality businesses will no longer be required to provide table service only
•
No limits on numbers at weddings and funerals
Symptomatic testing and contact tracing will continue - and it will still remain a legal requirement to self-isolate if you test positive for Covid.
•
No restrictions on communal worship and singing
•
No limits on people attending concerts, theatres or sports events
•
No legal requirements for Covid certificates for any venue or event
•
Guidance on working from home will also end and lim-
•
No legal requirements for face coverings (although their use will still be advised in hospitals, healthcare settings and enclosed, crowded public spaces)
What rules and guidance will be relaxed?
•
Events/hospitality/businesses
If approved on 12 July, the following will change in England from 19 July:
•
Nightclubs permitted to reopen
Deliverers Required
Mr Johnson said there would be announcements later this week on: •
Removing school bubbles and contact-isolation for pupils
•
Removing the need for fully-vaccinated people to self-isolate on return from "amber list" countries

Second dose push CALL FOR GP urges people to have second dose vaccination to protect against delta variant NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is reminding people of the importance of having both doses of the covid-19 vaccination to protect against the more infectious delta variant.
Covid hasn’t gone away, in Sheffield there are 153 cases per 100,000 people. Although there is a chance you might still get or spread covid-19 even if you have a vaccine, research has shown the vaccines help reduce your risk of getting seriously ill or dying from covid, reduce your risk of catching or spreading covid and protect against covid variants. Dr Anthony Gore, Clinical Director at NHS Sheffield CCG and GP in Sheffield, said: “It’s really important that we all have both doses of the vaccine. Some people have said they don’t want their second dose as they had side effects with their first. You’re less likely to have bad side effects with your second vaccine if you had them with your first. If you
South Yorkshire Mayor Dan Jarvis has raised concerns about reports that the wearing of facemasks is likely to become voluntary in July. The Prime Minister announced all restrictions currently in place, including social distancing and the wearing of face coverings indoors, will be lifted on July 19.
In order to get maximum possible protection against the virus including the delta variant, people need to have both doses of the vaccine, 8 – 12 weeks apart. In total, over 264K people have had both doses of vaccine in Sheffield. However, only 73% of people aged 40 – 59 have had the second vaccination, in comparison to 93% of people aged over 60.
CAUTION South Yorkshire Mayor Dan Jarvis said,
do have side effects, they are likely to be mild and only last a few days at the most.
and other people in this pandemic really and to do my part in helping in the situation.”
“The symptoms of covid and long covid are much worse and can last a lot longer. Long covid can cause fatigue, anxiety and impotence and can affect people of all ages, including people who are otherwise healthy.”
Dr Gore added: “Blood clots and unusual bleeding that have been reported after AstraZeneca vaccination is extremely rare. Vaccines are safe and effective and are the only way to reduce the rate of transmission in the fight against the virus. Having one vaccine isn’t enough, you need both.”
On the advice of the JCVI and government second vaccine doses for everyone aged 40 and above or with underlying health conditions have been brought forward from 12 weeks to 8 weeks between each appointment. Olivia Mateos from Sheffield has had both of her vaccines, she attended the second pop-up clinic at the Crucible for her second dose, she said: “I had my second shot to protect myself
To find out where you can book your first or second dose, and details of walk-in clinics, in Sheffield please visit www.sheffieldccg.nhs. uk/Your-Health/sites-offering-covid-vaccine-to-18-49-year-olds.htm everyone aged 18 and over is now eligible.
“I’m concerned that with case numbers rising exponentially, this is not the right time to drop the requirement to wear masks in enclosed spaces and on public transport. “This could cause real anxiety for those who are particularly vulnerable but have no option other than to use public transport or work in enclosed spaces. The pandemic has made existing inequalities worse, and some occupations have been more exposed to the virus. This could yet again put these people more at risk. “Masks are a simple and effective way to protect yourself and others from Covid, while trying to keep our country as open as possible. “Any decision to lift these restrictions must be backed up by evidence that it’s safe to do so.”

FUNDRAISERS ENDURE STORMS TO SEE SUNRISE ON SNOWDON A team of 12 fundraisers endured torrential rain and strong winds to complete a Sunrise on Snowdon challenge for the High Green based specialist centre, charity and school, Paces. The group have so far raised over £4,000 which will go to the organisation’s work supporting children and adults with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders. Leaving Sheffield in the early hours of Sunday morning (4 July), as most were recovering from the England win the night before, the group travelled to Snowdon where they climbed the 3,560 feet peak as dawn broke over North Wales amidst some of the most challenging weather conditions.
Among the fundraisers were members of staff from XPO Logistics and the Paces fundraising team, led by Head of Fundraising Julie Booth who said: “Climbing the highest peak in Wales is not easy at the best of times but trying to ascend Snowdon in the dark, with torrential rain and high winds was a challenge we all found really hard. “We all made it though, spurred on by the impact we know the money we’ve raised will have on the children and adults we support at Paces. “Thank you to all those who took part, including our amazing friends at XPO Logistics, and everyone who supported us.”
COMMUNITY YARD SALE Local NHS Worker hopes to bring community together in free event Like to find a bargain? There’s a free Community Event planned in Stocksbridge, Deepcar and Surrounding areas where you might be able to do just that. A community spirited resident in Stocksbridge has decided to set up a ‘Yard Sale’ like no other. Sharon Booth an NHS worker and resident of Stocksbridge is encouraging people to sell off unwanted items to neighbours, in a free community driven event. Yard Sale Sunday is planned for Sunday 18th July from 10.00am, when people are invited to sell their unwanted and second hand stuff from their own driveways and gardens. Organiser Sharon Booth told Look Local “I lived in the USA for a while and saw Yard Sales work really well there. I've been back in Stocksbridge for about 20 years, and set up one of these before in the area, about 4 or 5 years ago, just for a bit of fun and to clear out my own garage of stuff I've collected, and it worked quite well for everyone. I met new people on that previous Yard Sale Sunday who live near to me, whom I still see and correspond with all this time later. I thought we might as well try another one and see what the interest is - it is very promising so far, quite a few people have said they want to be Yarders. This time, I've had an offer of help from another local person, Mark Wrigley to do some
of the organising, so that's even better in terms of reaching as many folk as possible. We're hoping to encourage people to participate and take the opportunity to try to sell the things they want to clear from their garages, attics and sheds, and also to encourage everyone else from the local area to come and look and buy from their neighbours - it facilitates recycling and helps prevent waste, and also helps people connect with each other. We've all spent a lot of time apart, so this is another way to be outdoors and interacting as safely as possible, whilst still meeting and speaking to people.” You can be a Yarder and sell your stuff – there’s no cost to join in - or see the list of streets to bargain hunt where people are taking part, by looking up Yard Sale Sunday on Facebook and following instructions there, or by looking out for announcements on the local Facebook forums for Stocksbridge and Deepcar. If rain’s predicted for the 18th, postponement will be by notification to the Yard Sale Sunday and local Facebook forum sites, and another date will be proposed. Everyone is reminded to follow social distancing guidelines on the day – get selling and bargain-hunting!

CLIMATE Rotary Club raise CHANGE huge amount for new MEETING children’s cancer ward Sheffield prepares for zero carbon output by 2030 By Nic Franklin-Woolley on behalf of Penistone & Stocksbridge Climate Action Group
The Rotary Club of Wortley in December 2020 for the first time in 50 years had to cancel the annual Santa Sleigh ride, which travels throughout the areas of Wortley, High Green, Chapeltown, Grenoside, Ecclesfield and Thorpe Hesley on Christmas Eve. Whilst not a fund raising exercise, since this is primarily for children and their families to meet Santa, charity donations are made by the general public during the event. However, the rotary Club of Wortley, organised by Rotarian Trevor Fletcher, with the support of club members, friends, relatives and members of the public decided to have a “Virtual Christmas Raffle”. The raffle raised £3100.00 all of which along with a further donation from the charity fund of the Rotary Club of Wortley , bringing the total to £4,500.00 has been forwarded to the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity towards the new Cancer and Leukaemia Ward project. The new ward has significance far beyond Sheffield. It is the principal treatment centre for children with cancer and leukaemia from babies through to 19 year olds within South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and North Derbyshire .In addition patients
travel from as far as Northampton for treatment.
There was a good attendance for the third Zoom event last Sunday. Organisations participating in the series include Penistone and Stocksbridge Constituency Labour Party, Green New Deal, Build Back Better, ACORN Sheffield, Upper Don Renewable Energy Ltd, Bullhouse Mill, Barnsley TUC, Don Valley Railway, Nurses United, Better Buses Campaign,Youth Climate Strikers and Tomson Consulting.
The ward will have many features such as, a bigger and better playroom in the heart of the ward, space for computer workstations, specialised visual aids, space to accommodate patients with or without walking aids and improved space for parents to stay with their children.
Julie Grocutt, Deputy Leader of Sheffield City Council, spoke about some of the initiatives and actions Sheffield City Council are doing to help tackle climate change. She explained Sheffield’s 2019 declaration of a climate emergency which stated a goal to reach net zero carbon output by 2030. A plan was commissioned which touches every aspect of life and work in the city, focussing on specific actions for everyone and what the council can do to enable city wide action. There are over 80 recommended actions that are set out for the council, situated stakeholders, and the government. The report shows that Sheffield could reduce its carbon emissions to 85% by 2030.
Comment from Steven Patterson, President Rotary Club of Wortley “we feel sure that the disappointment of the children and their families at Christmas will find some satisfaction in knowing that this contribution is going to helping children less fortunate in health than themselves”. The ward is being further funded through donations from families, individuals, organisations and Trusts to the charity, who has until November 2021 to fully fund the project.
Tim Hess told us about developments of the Advice Centre Working Group, first pointing out the recent UN report predicting that we’re on track for a 3.2ºC rise in global temperature even if we meet the Paris accord climate targets. He explained how industry and electricity generation have decreased their carbon footprint but two stubborn areas are transport and household heating.
We would like to pass our best wishes and continued support for the success of this project. Please find a link for more information about Rotary, http://www.wortleyrotary.co.uk.
Headliner pull outs Singer Richard Ashcroft has pulled out of the headline slot at a music festival after it became part of the government's pilot events programme. Sheffield's Tramlines festival will take place from 23-25 July in front of a full-capacity 40,000 audience and is part of the Events Research Programme. On Monday, however, the former Verve frontman told fans on Instagram he would have no part in any such event. "Apologies to my fans for any disappointment," wrote Ashcroft. "But the festival was informed over 10 days ago that I wouldn't be playing once it had become part of a government testing programme. "I had informed my agent months ago I wouldn't be playing concerts with restriction. The status of the festival was one thing when I signed up for it, but, sadly was forced to become something else."
HIGH GREEN BLAZE
He talked about the role of solar panels and heat pumps, but this wasn’t always financially possible. Many people are unsure about what to do which led him and others to plan on setting up an Information Service, like those in York and Bristol. 23,700 homes in our region are rated category D or worse for energy use and insulation. Advice on insulation, double glazing, funding to get them, use of renewable energy and heat pumps will be so useful for the community. The group are planning a session in September and hope more volunteers will join them. Frank Horsman spoke about the operation and installation of a ground source heat pump at his home. He explained how this works like a fridge in reverse and why planning the whole design is critical to avoid problems such as freezing the ground round the boreholes which happened to one DIY installation in South Wales. Frank added that while an air based heat pump in winter would not have the same heating potential as a ground based system, if he had not had space for the boreholes, he would have chosen an air based heat pump. His final point was that heat pumps are four times more efficient than any other winter heating method.

Award for Care group Care Group charity awarded for ‘bringing life’ back to people in the community A care group in Stocksbridge have been awarded the Citizen Award for 2021 by Stocksbridge Town Council. The award culminates in a 'super charged' year of existing volunteers involved in reducing isolation in our community. Stocksbridge Community Care Group normally provides volunteer friendly visitors and supports bereaved families through a helpline. However, as a result of COVID 19 the service has adapted its helpline in the effort to help isolated people shield and keep safe. Volunteers befriended an additional 130 households to help with shopping, prescriptions and morale support. Samantha Devine project co-ordinator told Look Local about the suprisingly wide range of support that the SCCG found themselves helping with. "We helped people apply for their blue badges, bus passes and driving license renewals as they didn't have internet Volunteers took shielding people for their jabs including during the icy January weather. We too one gent for his first haircut after lockdown ended, he was relieved as it was long enough to tie back. Volunteers went with people to hospital appointments and accompanied them to visit family they had not seen for a long time. In one case we were able to zoom call with a new born grandson so the lady could meet him aged 10 months.". Samantha goes on to say “…it was much more than essential shopping, it was bringing life back to them in a way that was different for every person, whether it be finding a gardener or ordering things online. Above all it was some normality and a friend to talk to.
On a serious note some of the efforts of volunteers were life changing. In one case we reunited a family who were able to prepare the home for their brother coming out of hospital. In that case the chap had not seen a doctor in over fifty years, we helped fit a keysafe and that saved his life. Many of the community may remember the work of SSSG In December when they delivered 70 personalised hampers with cards from the community to isolated individuals.
MARKET FRUIT AND VEG VOUCHER SCHEME FOR BARNSLEY FAMILIES DECLARED A ‘LIFESAVER’ Market traders in Barnsley have helped to feed more than 650 families on low-incomes since embracing an innovative charitable voucher project. The Rose Vouchers for Fruit & Veg project is run by the Alexandra Rose Charity, in seven locations around the UK. Barnsley is the currently the only location in Yorkshire where the project is established. The project, which launched in Barnsley five years ago, helps families facing food poverty to access fresh fruit and vegetables. A family receives £3 of Rose Vouchers for each child, every week, or £6 if the child is under one year old. The vouchers can be exchanged at four stalls at Barnsley Markets – recently transformed and modernised as part of The Glass Works development scheme, as well as two outlets in Wombwell, Lorraine’s at Barnsley Hospital, one in New Lodge and one at Penistone Market.
many families. It’s a privilege to be involved with the Alexandra Rose Charity and see the impact it’s having in Barnsley.” Mum of three Kelly Drury has been using Rose Vouchers to help feed her family and says they have been a “lifesaver” during lockdown.
Barnsley Markets trader Darren Slack, who runs DS Fruits, joined the scheme when it was launched. “This scheme gives children the healthiest start,” said Darren. “Buying fruit and vegetables from a supermarket can quickly get expensive if you’ve got kids but we’re able to give families what they actually want and need. Because we are already great value, they get a lot more in their shopping bags.” Fellow trader Alan Parkes, who runs the nearby 5 A Day stall, added: “It’s brilliant that the traders have managed to support so
“I had a baby during lockdown and I’ve got a six-year-old and a four-year-old. With the children being at home more in lockdown, the Rose Vouchers have been a life-saver as I’ve been able to access more fruit and vegetables. “The children are now eating 10 times more fruit, including berries and strawberries, which can be expensive. “I feel we are eating healthier,” added Kelly, who is 33 and lives at Athersley North. “I cook from scratch, I do not use jars and I’m budgeting. “The stall holders are lovely, very helpful and I have had some deliveries also.”
Speaking on receiving the award from Mayor Richard Crowther, Samantha said "…this is for every volunteer who has been out there during the last 18 months and will continue to be out there going forward. It proves what an absolute difference volunteers make to our community going above and beyond" She added "we welcome new volunteers to the team as there is still much to do and a great deal of isolation still to resolve".
Supermarket donates to local charities The Co-op supermarket in stocksbridge proudly presented two local charities with cheques, from public donations. Valley React were presented £207. The money will be used to help fund their digital and online training initiative through the purchase of new laptops. This is an invaluable support scheme which not only provides new skills to local residents, but also tackles issues of loneliness and isolation. Stocksbridge Community Care Group were presented with £530. This scheme saw the SCCG and the Stocksbridge Co-op store work together to provide a fund that volunteers could use to buy essential goods for the local residents that they have been supporting during the pandemic. Money was raised through public donations to help fund the Volunteer Support Scheme.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

GRENOSIDE GRANGE GARDENING PROJECT It is just over two years ago since United Living undertook a large community gardening project at G1 Ward at Grenoside Grange. G1 is a special ward for those living with complex dementia and other associated challenging or distressing behavior. The team at United Living painted a drab fence with beautiful bright colours, weeded, planted trees, bedding plants, bulbs, supplied a high quality shed,
made fantastic planters and installed an outside tap.
Everyone had a fantastic time and the garden looked beautiful. The garden now requires some colour for the benefit of the patients and staff. Martin Marper, Business Banking Manager at Santander UK, and some of his team have kindly agreed to work on the garden and brighten it up with colourful plants.
In this regard, we wondered if anyone would be able to donate bedding plants, perennials and or bulbs. Any support would be very much appreciated. For further information, please contact Kathy Markwick, Freelance Community Consultant, 0772 9528844, kathymarkwick@ gmail.com

COLLEGE STUDENTS GAIN UNIVERSITY-LEVEL SKILLS Barnsley College’s Health, Science and Social Care Professions students have been given the opportunity to further their knowledge of university-level study by Course Leader, Claire Gedney. Claire’s students are all preparing to embark on a higher education journey into the healthcare industry and she hopes to ensure all her students earn the highest grades possible in their current Level 3 study programme at College. Referencing and citations are amongst the variety of universitylevel research methods Claire is using in her teaching to best equip her students for their futures. By practicing this way of working, students are gaining the skills and knowledge required to think critically and make informed choices.
Claire’s students now have the ability to interpret and retrieve relevant data from graphs and tables and include epidemiological context which looks at incidence, distribution and the possible control of diseases relating to health in their work. Claire said: “These transferable skills will not only ready them for university but for employment within the health sector. Whilst the development of research skills is a challenge for students, once established, this skill always encourages that inquisitive mind, to always follow up thoughts with research and to make informed decisions, a transferable and extremely useful skill for life. “At College we are committed to transforming the lives of students,
MUD MADNESS
Bearded Villains reunite as Mud Madness event makes long-awaited return to Sheffield.
This year’s Mud Madness will be the third outing for the popular event, which is organised by events company MLS with Bluebell Wood as the main charity partner.
A group of ‘Bearded Villains’ are reuniting for an epic, mudsoaked challenge for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice as the Mud Madness event makes its long-awaited return. Mud Madness will see participants clamber, scramble and slither through an array of muddy obstacles to raise much-needed funds for the South Yorkshire charity. After last year's event was cancelled due to the pandemic, Bluebell Wood is expecting hundreds to take on the popular event at Hesley Wood Scout Camp in Chapeltown on November 13th. One of the first groups to sign up were long-standing Bluebell Wood supporters, the Lake District chapter of the Bearded Villains – a global community of hirsute men dedicated to charity and kindness. As well as getting messy and muddy the group will be lending people power as volunteers on the day to make sure it all runs smoothly. Dad-of-three Matt Doe, who joined the Bearded Villains in 2015 after winning a beard growing bet with his two brothers, said the 33-strong group can’t wait to get together in person. “It’s been difficult to keep morale up and keep people motivated over the past year where we’ve been unable to be in a room together,” said Matt, from Oldham. “So we thought the best thing to do was to get something booked in to get that motivation and give us all something to look forward to. “The Bearded Villains is, in normal times, about meeting up and having a laugh. But as part of that we’re always looking for
ways to help others and it really helps bring us together. “A few of the lads have either direct or indirect experience of Bluebell Wood and after we learned more about their lifechanging work, we’ve been supporting them ever since. “This year has been a bit of non-starter for us so far so we’re very much looking forward to getting together and raising as much as we can for Bluebell Wood.” You can book tickets to Mud Madness and give yourself something to look forward to this winter here. The charity is also on the lookout for volunteers to help with marshalling, bucket collections and setting up and taking down the course itself. Those interested in lending a hand simply need to email beth.cole@ bluebellwood.org who will be delighted to hear from any prospective volunteers.
Yuri Matischen from MLS said: “ We are delighted that Mud Madness will be returning this November. The team at MLS look forward to the event every year and we can’t wait to see as many people as possible take on the muddiest race in Sheffield. “We’re proud to be supporting Bluebell Wood once again and we’re very much looking forward to raising much-needed funds for a fantastic local charity.” Beth Cole, Events Coordinator at Bluebell Wood, said: “We’re delighted the Bearded Villains are taking on our Mud Madness event and we can’t thank them enough for offering to volunteer too. “Our events are so important in raising funds to support our life-changing work, and it’s something we’ve sorely missed through the pandemic. “So we’re over the moon to have our events calendar in full swing once again and we can’t wait to meet some of our amazing supporters in person.” For details of all Bluebell Wood’s upcoming events, please visit https://www.bluebellwood.org/ events
staff and communities so I always tell my students that the harder you work for something, the better the reward will be when you achieve it.”
Dale Karim, Teaching and Learning Coach at Barnsley College, added: “Claire’s work with our Health, Science and Social Care Professions students is a true reflection of the type of experience-led delivery that we are so proud to offer at Barnsley College.” For more information about the Health, Science and Social Care Professions courses available at Barnsley College, or to apply for a course starting in September 2021, visit www.barnsley.ac.uk/be-anything, email info@barnsley.ac.uk or call 01226 216 123

Tigers lose to wolves gers got the last race result they needed to ensure they headed back to the Steel City with something to show for their efforts.
Team boss Simon Stead said: “I’m not delighted because I think we could’ve done better and should’ve done better. “But the fact is that we have got a point out of the meeting when actually at one stage it did look dead and buried. “We did well early doors containing them, we then sort of lost the set-up a little bit and they hit us hard.
SHEFFIELD produced a late battling display to earn a consolation league point from their 48-42 defeat at Wolverhampton. It was just a second Premiership point on the road for the Tru Plant Tigers - but come the final reckonings in a couple of months time, it could be another vital one in their play-off pursuit. Nothing could separate the two sides in the opening four races but it was the hosts who came up
with a dominant spell to stamp their authority on the meeting. The Tigers fell 14-points behind with just five races remaining and it looked as though the fixture was slipping away from the Owlerton outfit. But the Tigers refused to give up and won four of those final five heats - with No.1 Troy Batchelor swapping bikes to claim a hattrick of victories. That included taking the chequered flag in Heat 15 as the Ti-
“We had a chat between ourselves though, we knew if we got it right we could be stronger at the end of the meeting and that’s how it proved. “So I’m pleased with the fight that we showed, we’ll take the positives which is we’ve got a consolation league point and it’s something more to work with at least.” Batchelor led the inspired late charge with Justin Sedgmen also coming up with a big ride in Heat 14 as he ended his night on a high.
vided another steady contribution against the side he won the league with in 2016. Guest reserve Tom Brennan, who stepped in at short notice for Josh Bates who tested positive for Covid-19 on the day of the meeting, recorded four important third places while James Wright’s points in the reserves race also played their part. Sheffield head back to Peterborough next Monday (July 12, 7.30) with tickets now on sale for the next home fixture at Owlerton against King’s Lynn on Thursday, July 15 (7.30) via https://sheffieldtigerstickets.seatedly.com/ events. Costello wins a closely fought battle Danny Costello won a very closely fought two-day competition at Stocksbridge Golf Club on 3 and 4 July. In challenging conditions with periods of heavy rain and the occasional rumble of thunder Danny won the Brian Langley Trophy with rounds of 69 and 64. Ian Sedgwick matched Danny's aggregate score with a 68 and 65, but after 36 holes and a 6 on the very last of the holes, was unlucky to lose out on countback. League Team Captain, Liam O'Sullivan, came third with an aggregate 134 shots, his two rounds including 6 birdies. 8 more players were within 5 shots of Danny's winning score. On 1 July, the Gents Section competed for the July Midweek medal
and there was a good turnout of nearly 40 members. The overall winner was Nick Wood (15) with a net 62 and he enjoyed 3 birdies in the round. Bradley Lawton (16) was second with a net 62 as well, but he lost out to Nick on countback. At least Bradley had the satisfaction of an eagle 3 on the 8th hole. Ash Howe (5) and Steve Coutts (10) both shot 64s, but Ash took third place with a better back 9. The Dragons Section enjoyed a successful home match against Waterfront Golf Club from Wath on Dearne. Each team had 6 pairs competing in a better ball stableford with 4 of the home team pairings winning their individual
games. With the better ball format there were some very high scores from pairs and the overall match aggregate was 254 to 242 points in favour of Stocksbridge. The previous week on 23 June The Dragons competed for the Club President, John Yeates Post Office Trophy, a stableford pairs format. The clear winners were Mick Bellamy and Pete Hodkin with an aggregate score of 75 points. Les Wright and Noel Weaver were second with 72 points and Kav Meegan and Robert Haythorne were third with 69 points. The Ladies Section suffered the worst of the weekend rain, but did
manage to complete their 9-hole challenge on 2 July. Elaine Guest (13) won with 17 points. Hilja O'Sullivan (10) was second with 16 points and Alison Sedgwick (15) third with 14 points. One of the Club's leading players in the Ladies Section, Liana O'Sullivan has had a great run in the Sheffield and District Ladies Championship. She made it all the way to the semifinals of the knockout competition, losing at that stage on the second extra play-off hole on the 25 June. But she more than made up for that loss winning on Saturday 3 July at the Silkstone Invitation Day. She shot one over gross on a long challenging course and with her playing
partner won the better ball stableford with 47 points. More good news for Stocksbridge golfers came with the Woolley park Golf Club Mixed Open, which took place on 1 July. Mixed teams (2 men and 2 women) from around the region came together in large numbers. Stocksbridge golfer Mick Siddall was part of the winning team that won with an aggregate 84 points. Then in third place Stocksbridge Lady golfers Ann Whitfield and Bev Sykes were part of a team that scored 80 points, narrowly missing second place by 1 point.
