Goff Payne of The Salvation Army says he has been touched by the knowledge that so many people in parts of the world go without - sometimes for want of better training and access to resources that we take for granted.
Having lived in 4 countries in Africa – Kenya, Malawi, Uganda and Nigeria – he is more acutely aware of such situations.
He told Look Local, ‘When I read about the 750 Challenge it made an impact on me, and I wondered how the '750' could best be used as a challenge for me. A 750-minute walk seemed a good idea given that we live so close to glorious open countryside.’ Walking from Edale, taking in Kinder Scout, Bleaklow and Margery Hill, High Bradfield and ending up at the base of Loxley Common seemed a suitable challenge that would take at least 750 minutes (12.5 hours). Our son, Duncan, who lives nearby, and who grew up in Kenya and Malawi, wanted to be part of the action, and possibly to keep an eye on his 'old man'!
We completed the walk a few weeks ago and have so far raised over £1600.”
In addition, the local Salvation Army church at Hillsborough Tabernacle, Proctor Place is putting on a table-top sale at 10am on 7 August, so that this figure can be boosted. Bric-a-brac, clothes, and other items will be on sale, and refreshments available too.
The Salvation Army’s Feeding Hope CHAL- LENGE 750: “In 2019, close to 750 million – or nearly one in ten people in the world – were exposed to severe levels of food insecurity”
Choose your challenge based on the number 750 and take part anytime, anywhere before the end of August. See https://www. salvationarmy.org.uk/international-development/campaigns/feeding-hope for further information.
