POLICE PAY FREEZE – POOR REWARD “As a result of that decision, the employers of police staff (Home Office, Association of Police and Crime Commissioners, National Police Chiefs Council) have felt unable to do anything other than offer the same freeze to staff.

Dr Alan Billings has responded to the announcement to freeze the pay of police staff. He said: “I recently made it clear that, in my view, the decision by the Home Secretary to freeze the pay of police officers was a poor reward for all they had done over the last year and a half to keep us safe during some of the worst months of the pandemic. That was a view shared almost universally by police and crime commissioners.

OLYMPIC MEDAL FOR SHEFFIELD GYMNAST

Sheffield Trampoline gymnast Bryony Page won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, last week. The 30 year-old said she could hardly believe she had won a second Olympic medal. “I’m extremely happy and relieved,” she said. “It’s amazing.”

“This does not feel like a genuine negotiation and with inflation now at 3.9% it represents a real terms cut in pay.

Bryony trains in Sheffield and has been trampolining since the age of 9.

“It also contrasts starkly with what others have been offered – Fire and Rescue workers 1.5% and NHS employees 3%. “We undervalue the work of police staff whose work is largely unseen. But like the engine room of a ship, without their work the vessel cannot move. “I urge the government to think again: to reward officers and allow a proper negotiation for staff.” BRONZE: Bryony Page, 30 claims her second olympic medal in Tokyo.

Her coach, Paul Greaves, said “I’m just immensely proud, I feel amazing…A lot of athletes might have thought after winning a medal initially and having to turn up to the gym six times a week and training: ‘well, I’ll take the medal and enjoy other aspects of life’. But Bryony loves all aspects of the sport – I think that’s what keeps her going.”

STAINDROP LODGE PLANNING APPLICATION REJECTED Plans to convert Staindrop Lodge, Chapeltown, into a permanent homeless hostel have been unanimously rejected by Sheffield Council’s Planning Committee.

Committee Member Peter Price also stated that there is “a duty to find homes for people but this would make things poorer – for the residents and local community”.

As part of the hearing a Labour petition opposing the plans was presented – this had been signed by 1,346 – and former local councillors Andy Bainbridge (pictured) and Adam Hurst spoke out at the meeting calling for the application to be rejected.

Following the result Andy Bainbridge, former Labour Councillor for East Ecclesfield, stated:

The Committee agreed, and on rejecting the application Labour councillor Tony Damms, who has previously worked for the housing charity Shelter, stated that “there is a clear need to support vulnerable people in the city’ but that this application “isn’t it” and “would make matters worse”.

“I’m delighted with today’s result. I’d like to thank everyone who signed our petition objecting to these proposals. This is one of the biggest petitions we've had in our area in recent years, and I think it reflects the local feeling about how inappropriate these proposals were” “Well done to Sheffield Council for rejecting these plans, which I know will be of big relief to the local community”.

The Friends of Ecclesfield Library were delighted to welcome Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr Sioned-Mair Richards to their new Open Afternoon on Saturday 24th July. Sioned, one of the valued volunteers, working in the Library on Fridays, wanted to help publicise their "cautious re-opening" event. She was able to chat to visitors and local residents about the Library and the many groups and activities which they hope to be able to re-start in the Autumn. Friends of Ecclesfield Library would welcome ideas for new activities, and of course are always happy to welcome new volunteers to our friendly team! Check us out on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/ ecclesfieldlibrary) for news of upcoming events and contact details. Ecclesfield Library new opening hours are: Monday 1 to 4 pm, Wednesday 10 to 4pm Friday 10 to 4pm Saturday 10am to noon

Summer Art Project 2021 ‘Be inspired to Do Art’ The Wadsley and Loxley Commoners are planning an ART SHOW in September and would like you to take part. Through the Summer Art Project we are offering another way for people to enjoy and take an interest in Wadsley and Loxley Common. There are lots of different areas and aspects that artists, would be artists and anyone who fancies doing a bit of art can respond to: plants, trees, insects, animals, birds, rocks, the landscape, the sky above, humans, and more! As The Common is for everyone, we hope a wide range of people, children and adults will take part, enjoy and have fun. It’s an informal exhibition, (framing is not required). We don’t aim to sell work but to give a chance to show and share what you have done, which can be an important part of art making and enjoyable and inspiring for others. You don’t need a lot to get going, just an interest, imagination perhaps, possibly observation, a few materials or even found objects, and a wish to have a go. Work can be brought to Wadsley Church Hall on Friday 10 September from 4 to 6pm. The SUMMER ART SHOW will be at RIVA cafe, 77 Laird Drive, next to Wisewood Sports Centre from Tuesday 14 to Friday 17 September from 9am to 3pm. Also at Wadsley Church Hall, Worrall Road, on Saturday 18 September from 7-8.30pm. Jenny 07963075745 and Hannah 07778799175

VO5 is bringing the style of the Premier League to the masses by becoming the first ever ‘mane’ sponsor of a local league team. Whether you play nationally, regionally or in your office five-a-side, VO5 believes that every bloke deserves to feel their best, with the confidence to shine on the pitch. Many teams were identified as potential recipients of the ‘mane’ sponsorship, but the lucky team in chosen are Stocksbridge Park Steels F.C., a Northern Premier League Division One East team based in South Yorkshire, whose fans and former players include Leicester City and England striker Jamie Vardy and former England World Cup Midfielder Chris Waddle. There were various factors that contributed to the team’s selection for sponsorship, but the final decision came down to The Steels commitment to local grassroots, passion for player development and need for a financial and styling boost ahead of the 21/22 season. Chris Waddle, long term fan of The Stocksbridge Steels and football hair icon, is no stranger to the importance of good hair on the international football field. Waddle says “People remember me for two things – my footie skills and my iconic mullet, but what people don’t realise is how important the latter was to my game. If I looked good, I felt good, and that confidence translated on the pitch - it’s as simple as that really! Good style is not just for those with thick hair – if you’ve got hair, no matter how much, it feels good to care.” Ahmed Alsanwani (also known as A STAR), barber to the Premier League stars including Eden Hazard and Paul Pogba, has teamed up with the brand to give the lucky team a ‘mane-over’ experience at his VIP salon, which will see him switch up their style and prepare them for anything the upcoming season has to offer.

A STAR says “When it comes to footballers, I work with some of the best – so I know how important a good lid is to a team’s confidence on and off the pitch. But good hair comes down to much more than just volume. Regardless of how much hair you’ve got, my motto is - if you’ve got hair, care. My top tip for game-worthy style is to keep a pot of VO5 Matt Clay – in your kit bag for a quick touch up before the game.” Ahmed created bespoke looks for 5 lucky members of the team, taking inspiration from current styling trends and iconic football cuts. Each look is easy to replicate and can be styled with only a couple of VO5 products: On the sponsorship with VO5, Roger Gissing, Vice Chairman and Commercial Manager of Stockbridge Park Steels F.C. said, “VO5 becoming the ‘mane’ sponsor of The Steels has given our players the confidence boost they need to play their best next season, and some extra funds to . The sponsorship has also given us the funds for vital up keep of our training facilities, which will give us a real leg up in ’21/22. The need for funding of grass roots and lower league teams is so important, as we work with local communities to bring up the footie stars of tomorrow.” But it’s not just The Steels that are receiving a mane-over from the brand. Next week, VO5 will run a ‘Mane of the Match’ competition on social media, which encourages grassroot and regional teams around the country to nominate themselves to be in with the chance of winning a sponsorship package of their own. To be in with a chance of winning a mane sponsorship for your team, head over to @ VO5 on twitter and take part in the #ManeoftheMatch competition. B:friend aims to tackle the loneliness epidemic amongst the older population. We recruit befrienders who are paired with one of our older neighbours based upon locality and shared interests. Our befriender volunteers commit to visiting/telephoning their older neighbour for 1 hour per week, for a chat, so it is very flexible.

The COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to a sense of loneliness within most of the population but unfortunately as we begin to resume our everyday lives, those in the older age groups are often left feeling largely isolated. This may be due to anxieties initiating from the pandemic but also social connections may have broken down as older people have struggled to contact friends and family for such a long period.

You can offer 1 hour out of your week to meet an isolated older person, this may be on your way home from work, whilst calling at the shops or after the school run – whenever suits you!

Having a chat with your older neighbour can have such a huge impact on their wellbeing.

Local football team Chapeltown Royal British Legion have been kitted out by their new kit sponsor. Candy Kabin, of Station Road, Chapeltown are the clubs new sponsors for the 2021/22 season. The traditional sweet shop has over 250 different treats to choose from, including home made chocolates and fudge. It also caters for vegetarians and has a range of sugar free goods. Customers can relax in the seating area and enjoy a slush, ice cream or a Shmoo milkshake during the hot weather, outside the old fashioned shop, which is guaranteed to bring back memories of your childhood. Pictured is Anthony Round the Candy Kabin owner, with Chapeltown RBL manager Adam Todd, assistant Dave Adam’s, and club captain Jack Marlow.

Often, our older neighbours just enjoy your company. They are not looking to have the most in-depth, extraordinary conversations- instead you can just discuss your day’s events, your personal interests, views on current topics etc. Your time and presence is valued by whoever you are partnered with.

Our coordinators take all these things into consideration during pairings and so if you don’t have the means of transport, don’t let that stop you – often there are neighbours within walking distance or public transport routes can be recommended.

Police hunt down thieves in chase Police in North Sheffield managed to hunt down and catch two car thieves in the Stocksbridge area. Sheffield North West Police team reported the following on social media “Massively disappointed to come back to duty this afternoon to find out that at approximately 3.30am this morning thieves had been prowling around Deepcar attempting to burgle houses. After two failed attempts, they were successful at stealing two vehicles from one house in the village.

We have a real pride in our patch, and so when we got some information that one of the stolen cars might still be in the Stocksbridge area we roped in our colleagues from the Walkley team and together we hunted the suspects. At approximately 3pm, after tracking them across fields between Underbank and Bolsterstone, we finally got hands on. Two arrested for burglary, and currently being questioned.”

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

High Green In Bloom

“We welcome news that Amanda Pritchard has been appointed the head of NHS England and that she is the first woman to lead it. We are pleased that she had been working in the NHS for more than 20 years, gaining valuable experience and a wealth of knowledge and we hope that in her new role she will demonstrate her commitment to our NHS and its values.

High Green In Bloom would like to apologise to our community for being unable to stage our annual gala in Mortomley Park this year. Our current numbers make it unlikely that we can safely steward such an event, especially under the guidelines which Sheffield Council wish us to follow.

“Ms Pritchard couldn’t be taking up her role at a more pivotal time for the health service in England; we are far from recovering from the pandemic and at the same time we have millions of people wating to receive treatment – the biggest backlog of care the NHS has ever seen. All against a backdrop of decades of underfunding.

We are a gradually diminishing group and are becoming desperately in need of more help. Please, if you share our desire to improve the environment around our village, come and join us by phoning 0114 2847226 or call and meet us in Mortomley Park where we can be found on most Saturday mornings. Enthusiasm is all you will need. You may have noticed that we are having to remove some of our planters around the village. We have a programme to renew the remaining old ones. We continue to maintain the Memorial Rose Garden in Mortomley Park .... if you’ve never been in , go and have a look at our efforts. We hope to be starting to plant new trees in the Autumn. As a final note , all the plants in the park are provided by us from our own funds and not from Sheffield Council. To the small-minded person(s) who think they are entitled to steal them, please stop this and leave things in place for others to enjoy. D. Cooper , on behalf of HGIB

LEADERS WELCOME GOVERNMENT PLANS TO ACQUIRE SHEFFIELD FORGEMASTERS PLANT News that the Ministry of Defence plans to take over Sheffield Forgemasters steel plant has been welcomed by South Yorkshire leaders as a recognition of the importance of the steel industry to the UK’s economy, and the value of government taking an active role to secure its future.

Sheffield Forgemasters is one of the UK’s oldest steel plants and the Ministry of Defence has announced plans to acquire the company and invest £400m over the next ten years.

Responding to the announcement, the South Yorkshire Mayor Dan Jarvis said, “I welcome this move both as a recognition of the importance of steel to our economy, regionally and nationally, and its importance for UK defence. Steel is synonymous with Sheffield and South Yorkshire and I have repeatedly raised the issue of securing the industry’s future with Government.

While today’s announcement is most welcome, ministers also need to attend to the future of two of our other steel plants which hang in the balance, as a result of the crisis at Liberty Steel. The facilities at Stocksbridge and Rotherham have enormous potential, and I will continue to fight for the South Yorkshire steel industry and work to protect all the jobs and businesses they support. I’ll be meeting the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial

Strategy in the near future to discuss.” Sheffield City Council leader, Cllr Terry Fox said,

“It’s without doubt a positive move for Sheffield Forgemasters and for the city. Sheffield Forgemasters is a massive player in this industry and it’s right that the Government is recognising its importance nationally and the need for significant investment. We’ve got world-leading expertise right here in Sheffield – we’ve got steel running through our veins.

This needs to be the first step of many though, we can’t forget the challenge Liberty Steel is going through right on our doorstep. We’ve already called on the Government to take action and we need clarity now on how they will put Sheffield first.” Chairman of SY Local Enterprise Partnership James Muir said, “This is fantastic news and testament to the unique manufacturing capabilities of Sheffield Forgemasters, the skills of the workforce and the quality of the management team, led by David Bond.”

People and plants – plants as healers

Many of us love both our gardens and gardening. This has become even more the case over the last year as we have for long periods been confined to our homes and gardens except for short periods of the day when we have been allowed to exercise, often choosing to spend that time in nature, perhaps walking in the woods drinking in the bluebells and admiring the many different greens of the trees. There is increasing evidence to support the fact that nature including gardening and even just sitting in a green space is not just enjoyable but is actually good for your health, both physical and mental. The recent National mental health week had Nature as its theme and the Government has recently invested several million pounds in a number of projects where nature is used to support physical and mental wellbeing. These projects will be evaluated to see whether there

is benefit from them and what sort of things work best.

So called, “Green care” is a term that covers a range of therapies which specifically use active engagement with nature and gardening, to promote health. These include formal therapeutic horticultural therapy from a qualified social and therapeutic horticulturalist ( www. thrive.org.uk ), time in a healing garden such as the one in Wortley (Nurturenature.org.uk) and walking groups etc. In reality this is not a new phenomenon. Historically, both hospitals, and prisons had both general gardens and kitchen gardens and inmates and patients who worked in the gardens or undertook agricultural roles were observed to do better both physically and mentally than those employed in roles indoors or not undertaking any physical activity at all.

There are a wide variety of therapeutic gardens which all have features in common . Why not try and incorporate some of their characteristics into your plot at home? Choose plants that will appeal to all the senses; smell, touch, visual impact both large and small scale, auditory input such as running water and even taste by growing edible produce on site. Use plants which attract wildlife: as well as looking and if chosen wisely smelling beautiful, they’ll make your garden a magnet for birds, mammals and insects. Grasses not only provide year round interest but potentially tactile stimulation running your fingers through them which is especially useful for those with visual impairment or learning difficulties If you can find a place for native hedging and bird boxes; both attract birds so you can enjoy watching them and their fledglings and listen to their beautiful sound. A recently published book (Bird Therapy by Joe Harkness) highlights the benefit provided specifically by birds and bird watching. Running water provides sound to stimulate hearing and again water attracts wildlife for added interest.

What evidence is there that nature is good for us? There is a theory, called biophilia that we are genetically made to be attracted to nature. It states that all humans instinctively love the natural world. But again this is not new, the concept that we have an inbuilt attraction to nature actually goes back centuries as far as Aristotle. A few years ago MIND a national mental health charity did a study of what they called “ecotherapy” ; using nature as therapy, for individuals with mild or moderate recurrent depression and found that it was as effective as antidepressants and it subsequently became a recommendation in national (NICE) guidelines for treatment of

AUGUST

depression. In addition, it was found to promote general mental well-being even in those without depression. (https://www.mind.org. uk/media/336359/Feel-better-outside-feelbetter-inside-report.pdf

The RHS has created a Wellbeing Garden at its main garden in Wisley. The wellbeing garden is made up of a series of “rooms” and there are touch screens around the garden which will be used to measure emotional responses to different parts of the Wellbeing garden - for example someone may be energised by hot colours in a bed or emotions calmed/soothed by a collection of soft pastel colours. I particularly liked the description of the potential benefit of raised beds – “in some borders the soil has been raised and sculpted; sitting inside these rooms will be like getting a great horticultural hug” (June 2021 The Garden,p65 ) The RHS have also published a book, The WellBeing garden. Gardening itself provides significant benefit – quietly weeding or potting on can create a very mindful state reducing stress and promoting well being. More physical gardening will not only provide benefit from being in nature but from the physical exercise as well. Plants and people are inextricably linked – optimise the benefit of your own garden and take time to visit gardens specifically designed to promote your physical and mental well being. Celebrate the green in our lives! Nurturenature can be contacted at nurturenature61@gmail.com Although it has been closed due to covid it will be open later in the year all being well and provides a community sensory/healing garden resource to promote health and wellbeing.

The last two weeks has been busy at Stocksbridge Golf Club with a range of competitions. The League Team lost away to Serlby Park on 21 July, losing the fixture 6-2. But that was followed on 28 July with a thumping 7-1 victory at home to Roundwood. These results and those of others in the league, have made promotion more challenging, though mathematically still possible. Their next match is away to Lindrick, a difficult fixture, but a must win if the team are to keep promotion hopes alive.

The Dragons Section competed in the difficult format of the TriClub Challenge on 21 July. Each player is only allowed three clubs plus a putter. Sandy Murphy (13) triumphed with an excellent 38 points, the same score as Robert Clegg (30), but with a better back 9. Bob Mason (18) took third place with 37 points, again beating several other players with the same score with a better back 9. The Dragons then competed for the July Medal on 28 July. Horace Boothroyd (21) won with a clear margin, scoring a net 66. Pete Hodkin (21) was second with a net 70 and Mick Bellamy (21) third with a net 71. Four members of the Dragons Section - Ian Batty, Martyn Bradwell, Noel Weaver and Les

Club Captain’s, big day. Alan had the frustration of having to reschedule the day from two weeks previous when unseasonal fog descended in the area, making it unsafe for play. Despite this Alan was very well supported and is pictured with his Vice-Captain, John Moss, raising the Club flag early on the day. Over 100 members played through the day, an excellent turn out considering that school holidays have started and many families were away.

Wright (pictured) - won a Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs Seniors tournament on 23 July at Silkstone Golf Club. They won with a commanding combined stableford score of 134 points. Their victory was all the more impressive given that the competition included another 35 teams from around South Yorkshire. On the 25 July the Gents competed for the Monthly Medal. Jason Dean (17) was the overall winner with a net 64. playing a steady and very consistent round. Club Captain, Alan Revill (17) was second one shot behind with a net 65 and Chay Murphy (9) was third with a net 67. Danny Costello (2) finished with the lowest

On the same day the Ladies competed in a stableford competition. Sam Wood (51) won with 38 points. Elaine Guest (29) was second with 36 points and Margaret Pearson (29) was third with 30 points. Then on Sunday 1 August the Ladies competed for the Glen Trophy, a stroke play competition. Liana O’Sullivan (6) had the round of the season scoring a net 62. Her round included 5 birdies and only 4 dropped shots. Alison Sedgwick (34) was a distant second with a net 66 and heather Evans (32) was third with a net 68. Saturday 24 July saw Stocksbridge Golf Club enjoy good weather conditions for Alan Revill, the

Then on the 31 July Alan and Lady Captain, Helen Moffett, hosted the annual Captains’ Charity Day. Again, the turn-out was well over 120 golfers and the scoring was excellent considering the windy and cool conditions. The Gents John Marron Trophy was won by Geoff Spriggs (15) with an excellent 41 points. Pete Hodkin (21) was second overall with 40 points. Then 5 players came in with 39 points, but Luke Wilson (24) took third place on countback.

This was the first league game of the season and a turnout of about 40 from Church supporters ensured a good atmosphere.

You can do all the pre-season you like but its competitive football that matters and it was great to have it back.

All the action was packed into a frantic last few minutes. Church probably deserved to win, but failed to convert their openings, with both sets of fans left wondering ‘what if?’

Without creating numerous chances and making their keeper work a lot we were the better side today, we were dominant in terms of territory dominant in terms of ball and we managed to get higher up the pitch especially the first half but we just didn’t have that killer instinct or that final decision that bit of quality. Some times that happens but we never looked in danger.

An evenly contested game burst into life with 3 minutes to go. Eccleshill played the ball down the left, a low cross deflected off Danny Howes and looped kindly to Luke Aldrich who scored at the far post. Church responded immediately and Jordan Coduri picked the ball up 25 yards out and drove into the box and Church were awarded a penalty after an obvious trip on him as he entered the box. Nicky Guest scored the penalty low to the left of goal. The match ended with the restart from the penalty. Church manager Ian Richards It’s great to have competitive football back after eight months since the last competitive game. The boys are obviously continuing to build some momentum for us with the Yorkshire trophy and then a really positive preseason.

Sheffield Transport 110 all out (A Hibbert 4-20, J Hibbert 2-25) Stocksbridge 1st XI 114-5 (L Grayson 59 not out) Stocksbridge 1st XI travelled to Sheffield Transport to keep their good run of form going. Andy Hibbert won the toss and elected to bowl first on what seemed bowler friendly conditions. Opening pair Andy Hibbert and Jake Vickers got straight into their work both removing each Transport opener to get off to

The reply got off to a positive start, as Jack Newton hit a couple of early boundaries to get the innings going. However he was removed for 13 along with opening partner Price for 9. Liam Grayson came to the crease and began to get into his groove. He lost a couple more batting partners on the way and the 1st XI were 5 down. Grayson was joined by Steve Perry who backed him up superbly. It was Grayson the destroyer as he began to tick on dispatching the bowling to all parts of the boundary. He brought up his 50 in style with a four over the bowlers head, receiving a standing ovation in the process. The 1st XI got over the line with 12.2 overs to spare. Grayson finishing unbeaten, scoring a brilliant 59 and Perry finished 11 not out. A great win for the 1st who stay 2nd in the table, with everything to play for. Stocksbridge 2nd XI 199-7 (C Ogley 42, J Murfin 25) Sheffield Transport 2nd 79 all out (C Thwaites 6-22)

Stocksbridge hosted Sheffield Transport this weekend, looking to bounce back from a resounding defeat to Baslow last time out. Captain Thwaites won the toss and elected to bat first. A decision well vindicated by opener Chris Ogley who raced quickly into the 20s. Jack Firth and James Hague were dismissed early on, however Ogley continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Ogley was finally removed for 42, falling just short of a half century. The middle order of Reeves, Hague, Murfin and Siddall fired superbly for Stocksbridge, propelling the score from 88-4 to 170-7. Murfin added a quick fire 35 including some lusty blows over the ropes, ably supported by Hague (21) and Reeves (19). The returning Ant Siddall (22) and captain Chris Thwaites (15) both finished not out, seeing Stocksbridge to a very good total of 199-7. Stocksbridge's reply with the ball got off to the best possible start, with Thwaites ripping through the Transport top order in an incredible opening spell. Amazingly, the opener picked up a 5 wicket haul in just his first 2 overs, with Transport collapsing to 7-5 after 3 overs. Young opener Rowan Brearley joined the party, removing Transport's number 7 and victory looked in sight. Thwaites claimed his 6th scalp, leaving Transport floundering at just 32-7. A late bit of resistance by the Transport tail doubled their score, however Murfin and returning fan-favourite Cal Haywood wrapped up proceedings. Transport were eventually bowled out for 79, with Thwaites claiming figures of 6 for 22 from his 8 overs. A superb effort with bat and ball which Stocksbridge will look to carry into next week's tie away at Baslow.

Steels suffer cruel defeat

Stocksbridge Park Steels fell to a 2-1 loss to National League North Spennymoor Town after conceding twice in two minutes.

However Stocksbridge did show some attacking threat in the early part of the game as well. The crowd urged Sam Finlaw to shoot when he found himself in space and he did though the powerful effort went

continued from back page

Those contributions, and wins for skipper Kyle Howarth in Heats 10 and 14, were very much needed because the Tigers’ heat-leaders all had plenty to contend with. Holder, back after his recent smash in Poland, rode through the pain barrier and was only beaten in Heat 1 from his four outings, but Adam Ellis was withdrawn with a knee injury after a heavy Heat 9 crash when he lifted and hit the fence on the exit of turn four. Meanwhile Troy Batchelor was also clearly struggling for full fitness as he lost positions late in races and had medical treatment after the meeting, so Tigers will need to await updates before they visit Ipswich on Thursday. It all meant second-strings Pickering and Howarth had to go in Heat 15 and avoid conceding a 5-1 for maximum league points – which looked likely to happen for a time until the ultra-determined Pickering forced his way past Jorgensen to make it a perfect night. Manager Simon Stead said: “I think we were pretty convincing. When you look down the one-to-seven, we had everybody doing their job. “It was a really good, solid display, and one that I’ve always felt has been in there. For one reason or another we’ve just not been able to show our true form until now, but I’ve always felt this was something we were capable of. “Perhaps a bit more firepower at reserve helped, but I’m really happy with the performance. We knew if we were going to progress our season, we needed to look at taking four points here, and it’s a great start to the week.” KING’S LYNN 41: Richard Lawson 12, Thomas Jorgensen 9+1, Lewis Kerr 8, Erik Riss 6+1, Ricky Wells 4, Connor Mountain 2+1, Cameron Heeps 0. SHEFFIELD 49: Josh Pickering 12+1, Jack Holder 9+2, Kyle Howarth 8+2, Troy Batchelor 7, Stefan Nielsen 6+2, Adam Ellis 5, Danyon Hume 2+1.

It was against the run of play when Stocksbridge scored but they wouldn’t have cared. Crofts once again caused issues when he got on the ball and played it through to Lumsden. He carried the ball a bit before shooting though it was initially saved. The ball fell back to Lumsden though and on the second attempt, he fired in and gave the Steels the lead going into halftime.

over. Nathaniel Crofts was a pain for the Spennymoor defence throughout but when he got enough space for a shot, it went wide. There was some good play after Lumsden ran through the defence without being challenged. He played the ball to an onrushing Ross Goodwin whose shot was straight at the goalkeeper. Spennymoor did show their extra quality as the game progressed

as they took control of the game. Stocksbridge weren’t able to get the ball out of their own half for very long, if at all. However the defence remained solid to limit The Moors’ chances. The biggest chance for Spennymoor came when Trialist 16, who was lively throughout, robbed the ball from Rob Ludlam and went clear on goal. Hall came to the rescue with an impressive

SPEEDWAY: Tigers win

save though, continuing the good form he has shown throughout pre-season. The Moors could have had a penalty when Jason Kennedy went down in the box, but it wasn’t given.

Joe Lumsden gave Stocksbridge the lead in the first half after finishing the second time around following his first effort being saved. However 39-year-old skipper James Curtis equalised with a header after a well worked corner routine and they got the win a minute later when Rob Ramshaw headed in from another corner. At first it seemed like it was going to be a very open game. Spennymoor went forward straight away with a long ball being played to Robert Ramshaw who flashed the ball just wide. They continued to be lively early on with Mark Anderson having a weak shot saved by Ed Hall and Glenn Taylor probably should have scored when he had space in the centre of the box but thankfully he steered the ball wide.

Thwates halts transport in their tracks the perfect start. Joe Hibbert came into the attack and continued his good form with the ball, picking up four wickets for the second week running. Transport were in all sorts of trouble with the innings never getting going. Liam Grayson backed up Hibbert junior from the other end and picked up a wicket in the process, even though he deserved far more. It was left to Andy Hibbert to come back into the attack, picking up two wickets in two balls to finish off the innings in style. Transport were depleted and all out for 110. Andy Hibbert the pick of bowlers with 4-20, with Joe Hibbert finishing on 4-25.

In the second half, it was all Spennymoor. They kept the ball for what felt like forever and worked hard to make the breakthrough. But they struggled to create clear cut chances, a credit to the Steels defence. In fact, it was Stocksbridge who looked deadlier as when they went forward. Lumsden’s teasing pass was cleared on the goal line and Ludlam whistled a shot just wide after Lewis Whitham’s free kick was cleared.

Spennymoor had the biggest chance to equalise when they got a penalty. Their wing back was tripped by the trialist and the referee took a second before giving the spot kick. Glen Taylor stepped up for The Moors but smashed it against the post, keeping Stocksbridge ahead for now. Spennymoor remained frustrated and would have thought themselves lucky when Reece Fielding’s header deflected into the goalkeeper’s arms. But eventually, they got their goal. It was a well worked short corner that was then whipped in and it was truly Captain fantastic as Curtis headed in despite Hall getting a hand to it. A minute later, Spennymoor had the lead and the win. It was another corner but far more traditionally taken. It went to the far post and was headed across goal for Ramshaw to head it and get the expected, if far more difficult than anticipated, win for Spennymoor. MOTM: Joe Lumsden Photo: by Myra Little

SPEEDWAY - TIGERS WIN

SHEFFIELD charged into the Premiership play-off places with all four league points from a crucial 49-41 win at King’s Lynn on Monday. The Tru Plant Tigers’ first away win of the season could not have been better timed, especially as top-four rivals Ipswich were heavily beaten at Belle Vue.

And with the spectacular Josh Pickering confirming a maximum haul at the Adrian Flux Arena by passing Thomas Jorgensen in Heat 15, Sheffield now move above the Witches on race points difference – and also have four matches in hand.

The value of the recent team changes was clear for all to see in Norfolk with Pickering showing just why he has been one of the most talked about riders in the Championship ahead of his recent step up, as he collected paid-13 with a string of exciting rides. Meanwhile Stefan Nielsen produced a highly useful paid-eight on his debut, and combined with Pickering to surge inside Ricky Wells for a Heat 8 5-1 which put the visitors fully in control. For Pickering, it was a second maximum advantage as he had already combined with Jack

Holder in Heat 5 to turn around an early deficit, but the Australian’s best was yet to come.

Success for runners

Tigers led by six points after Heat 10 but faced the Stars’ strongest duo in the next race as Richard Lawson came in for a tactical substitute outing along with Jorgensen. Holder led from the off, but Pickering stunned the home crowd by first blasting around Lawson and then reeling in and diving inside Jorgensen for a 5-1 to virtually put the match beyond the home side.
