CAMPAIGNERS REACT TO PLANNING APPEAL LOSS Friends of Hollin Busk are saddened and disappointed at Planning Inspectorate’s decision to allow developers to build on treasured local site Hollin Busk.

Following a five-day planning inquiry in late June, the Planning Inspectorate published on 10 August 2021 its decision to grant outline permission to build up to 85 houses on Hollin Busk. The application was originally submitted in November 2017 and, following an energetic public campaign fronted by Friends of Hollin Busk (FOHB) and supported by Stocksbridge Town Council as well as hundreds of local people, Sheffield City Council refused permission for development at its July 2020 Planning and Highways meeting. “We are extremely disappointed that after more than 4 years of campaigning against unsustainable development on this highly-valued part of the local landscape, the Planning Inspector has overturned the Council’s decision to reject the planning application,” said

Council will be taking a keen interest in any detailed proposals for development that are forthcoming for the site.

Dr Peter Morgan, chair of FOHB. “Everyone understands the need to provide more housing for a growing population, it is equally clear that these new homes need to be in the right place, and building dozens of homes on an unsustainable site is not the answer.” The Mayor of Stocksbridge, Councillor Richard Crowther, added: “It will be a great disappointment to many local residents that permission has been granted to develop this section of Hollin Busk, which has for decades

been protected in planning regulations. Hundreds of local people voiced their concern about this development, as did our representatives on the Town Council, City Council and in Parliament.” Stocksbridge united behind Friends of Hollin Busk in opposition to developing the site and in support of preserving its green aspect and tremendous views across the valley. Now that outline consent has been granted by the Inspector, both FOHB and Stocksbridge Town

Cllr Crowther continued, “Whilst we are resolute in our conviction that the wrong decision has been made in this appeal, we are appreciative of the courtesy extended to us as third parties by the main parties’ advocates and by the Inspector himself. This decision doesn’t give the developers carte blanche however, and any detailed plans for the site will be the subject of further applications and must themselves comply with planning guidance”. The Planning Inspector has attached more than 30 planning conditions to the outline permission, covering issues such as coal mining risk assessments, flood prevention and archaeological appraisals as well as conditions related to ecology and wildlife. Dr Morgan concluded “We are of course very disappointed with the decision, but we are also proud of the case we made to the inquiry and grateful for the support we have enjoyed from the Stocksbridge and Deepcar community. We will continue to do all we can to ensure that the final shape of this development is appropriate and sympathetic to the local area”. Miriam Cates MP who personally gave evidence to the enquiry said “I am deeply disappointed by the outcome...I maintain my view that Hollin Busk is a completely inappropriate place to build these homes, and that development will significantly damage the character and landscape of the area...The lack of a Local Plan and the outdated nature of Sheffield's existing policies from 1998 meant that there was very little legal scope to argue against the development of the site.” Reaction on social media “As a former City Councillor, Stocksbridge Town Councillor and past Mayor of Stocksbridge my heart bleeds for everyone who has put an expansive amount of time and effort into trying to protect this green field site. Thanks to SCC for rejecting the initial plans and as Cllr Crowther states there must be further plans submitted before this war is over. I fear for our village the volume of traffic from this and the bloors development will be horrendous. Well done to FOHB you did us proud. Keith Davis – former Stocksbridge Mayor and town councillor

Mental illness awareness Walkers raise huge amount in memory of young Mum A charity walk, by 29 people, from Doncaster to Sheffield, was followed by a fun day at a Stocksbridge pub. Kimberley Donovan arranged the day in memory of her late sister, Alex Jenkins who died suddenly in October 2020 from ruptured stomach ulcers. Prior to this, Alex battled with mental illness in various forms, and fought her demons every day for her son Oliver- her world. Unfortunately, Alex hid most of her anxieties, depression and illness from everyone, including friends and family. Alex’s sister Kimberley told Look Local “We decided to do the charity walk when Alex's friend from Doncaster came up with the bright idea- as word got around more people wanted to join and contribute their time and effort. We asked The Friendship if we could have our finish line

there and they organised a fun day with all proceedings to go to Mind, which included hog roast, donated pizzas and loads of fabulous bands. Lots of raffle donations from local businesses. We chose Mind because we know it’s close to so many hearts. Someone at some point in their life has suffered or knows someone who has suffered from mental ill-health, and this included Alex. Unfortunately most people suffer in silence so we decided to do the walk to get people talking! If our efforts help just one person in their time of need then we are so happy! Since Alex has passed people have come forward to say Alex helped them when they were low, asking if they were OK, which we love! We walked 22 miles from Doncaster to Stocksbridge 29 did the full walk and 7 did half and it took us 6hrs 45 mins which is fantastic

people kept approaching us to do it again next year, so this is something we might think of doing too!” Organisers would like to say a huge thanks to the Friendship and to all those who donated raffle and auction prizes and donated in other ways. So far they have raised an incredible £8,000 with money still to come for those who sponsored on paper. www.justgiving.com/fundraising/kimberley-donovan Mind, the mental health charity, works across England & Wales. They believe no one should face a mental health problem alone. We’re here for you. Whether you’re stressed, depressed or in crisis. We’ll listen, give support & advice, & fight your corner. Thanks for fundraising for national Mind.

Stocksbridge High School Headteacher commented on his schools recent GCSE success, Andy Ireland said: Congratulations to all students receiving their grades today. Despite the huge challenges and disruption of the last 18 months our students have shown incredible determination and, combined with a lot of hard work, have returned a very successful set of results. This would not have been possible without the resolute support from parents, carers and families. I would also like to thank all the school staff that have worked so hard to maintain learning and support throughout the pandemic and went above and beyond to ensure today’s results are fair.

COUNCIL WINS PLANNING APPEAL TO STOP HOUSING DEVELOPMENT ON LOXLEY VALLEY Sheffield City Council has won its case against Patrick Properties who wanted to develop the former Loxley Works on Storrs Bridge Lane (in the Green Belt) for 300 dwellings. The original application was submitted by the developer in April 2020 but it was declined by the council’s planning committee, who said it would harm the Green Belt, was unsustainable and a threat to wildlife and biodiversity. The developer appealed against the decision under a formal planning inquiry. The Planning Inspector yesterday agreed with the Council, that the development would cause substantial harm to the openness of the Green Belt and have an adverse impact on the character and appearance of the site due to the urbanising effect of the proposed development and increased levels of activity. He also concluded that insufficient evidence was presented by the developer to show that the proposals would not result in unacceptable harm to the ecology and biodiversity of the site and its surroundings. He agreed with the Council that the site is not in a sustainable location, being remote from facilities and services and an unsuitable landscape on which to build homes.

Officers from Sheffield City Council’s planning service, ecology team and landscape team worked tirelessly to present a strong case against the development, along with partners at CPRE (a countryside charity), the Friends of Loxley Valley and the South Yorkshire Bat Group. The case is the one of the biggest planning inquiries the city has ever been involved in, with the original planning application receiving more than 1,000 objections from members of the public and local organisations and members. Councillor Julie Grocutt, Deputy Leader at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is a very significant decision for such an important Green Belt site and one of the biggest planning inquiries we have ever seen in Sheffield. For many reasons we declined the original planning application, which had more than 1,000 objections, and we are pleased that the planning inspector has recognised this and agrees with our decision. “The site is not only an unsustainable location for housing, but a development of this kind would have threatened many protected species and habitats, thankfully they are now protected and can continue to thrive.

Club Hosts Sponsored Golf Day The Golf Club at Stocksbridge and Enzygo, a Stocksbridge based environmental consultancy firm, joined forces for a day of golf on 13 August. Enzygo sponsor the Golf Club's Dragons Section and it was this section that hosted visiting golfers from the company, and their clients. In addition to enjoying some good golf, the 36 players also raised money for charity, supporting Strengthening Families and Children (SFAC). SFAC is a charity that supports some of the most vulnerable children in care to thrive, both in the UK and abroad. On the day the golfers raised £180 and this was then doubled by Enzygo. Dan Hope, from SFAC, spoke to the golfers on the day and described how the money the charity raises supports training, counselling and legal advice for those working with children in care. Dan said that "donations, no matter how large or small are vital for the charity to carry out its work."

Around £200,000 of cannabis seized as smell picked up by Sheffield factory's air conditioning, writes David Kessen for The Sheffield Star. Police have seized around £200,000 worth of cannabis after its smell was picked up by a factory’s air conditioning system. Officers were called out after concerns were raised about the aroma which had started to be noticed in the building in Hillsborough by the people working there. It turned out the smell had been blown in through the air conditioning units. Sgt Simon Kirkham, from Sheffield North West neighbourhood policing team, said: “We received

reports from a local factory of a strong smell of cannabis permeating through the building. "It transpires it was being taken in via air conditioning systems.” They checked the roof near the air conditioning units and worked out the location of the smells before speaking to a number of residents on Bradfield Road. Officers entered two two separate properties and described both as having been ‘extensively modified’ for cannabis production. He said they took another £200,000 worth of cannabis off the streets as a result. He added: “In less than a week and in less than half a mile radius in Hillsborough, the team has made

safe five properties and seized just under £1 million of drugs destined for the streets of Sheffield and possibly beyond. We mail dropped the local residents bringing them up to speed and the support has been fantastic. Locals have been brilliant.”

Matt Travis, one of the founding Directors of Enzygo, said at the presentation that he was delighted to "support the days golf and more importantly to support SFAC and all the good work that it does." In addition, Matt confirmed the continuing sponsorship of the Golf Club's Dragons Section, "because it (and the Golf Club) also does a lot of fund-raising for local charities." At the presentation evening, local MP Miriam Cates attended to lead the prize presentations. She is pictured with the competition winner Stuart Roebuck and Company Director of Enzygo, Matt Travis.

It follows raids on properties on Penistone Road and Owlerton Green earlier in the month, which uncovered around £750,000 worth of drugs. A third raid was made on an address on Holme Lane found evidence a crop had previously been grown there. Sheffield’s first 16 and 17 year olds vaccinated The first 16 and 17 year olds have now been vaccinated against covid in Sheffield. Over 90 16 and 17 year olds attended the GP led clinic at St Columba’s Church to be vaccinated on Wednesday 11 August.

Last month the government announced that people in this age group will be offered the vaccination to protect more people from the virus. Currently 16 and 17 year olds are only being offered the vaccine via appointment from their GP but it is expected that the govern-

ment will announce soon that they can use walk-in clinics too. Rohan Hardy, 17, from Sheffield had his vaccine at the St Columba’s clinic on Wednesday. He had his vaccine so he didn’t have to isolate if he is a contact once he’s fully vaccinated and the rules change on 16 August. He said: “I had my vaccine because it gives me the freedom to do what I want and not have to isolate from the 16th August if I’m a contact.” The only vaccine currently approved for under-18s in the UK is Pfizer and 16 and 17 year olds will not need parental consent to have the vaccine. Dr Tom McAnea, GP and Clinical Direc-

tor for the primary care network running Wednesday’s clinic, said: “It’s great to see so many young people eager to have their vaccine. We can be confident that young people will get around 80% protection against hospitalisation from covid-19, following their first dose of the vaccine. “This is really important now restrictions have been lifted and as young people start socialising with more people again. I’d encourage young people to take up the offer of the vaccination when invited.” Clubs and venues are open again now but it’s important to remember covid hasn’t gone away. Cases in Sheffield are high and rising which is why we all need to be vaccinated. Soon you’ll need to be double vaccinated to visit nightclubs and venues with large crowds. To make sure they can attend venues in the future, young people are encouraged to get their jab. NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is reminding people to have their vaccination as

cases of covid continue to rise in Sheffield. Alun Windle, Chief Nurse and Vaccination Lead at NHS Sheffield CCG said: “Thank you to everyone that’s had their vaccination so far. Vaccines are highly effective at preventing serious illness and death from the virus but they can also prevent long covid. Around 10,000 people in Sheffield have long covid, including plenty of young people. Long covid can cause over 200 symptoms including fatigue, anxiety, and impotence – avoid long covid by getting your jab. “It’s really important to have both doses of the vaccine. Full protection kicks in around a week or two after the second dose. Get your second dose at 8 weeks to protect yourself and others.” Find out when and where to get your vaccination here www.sheffieldccg.nhs.uk/Your-Health/ covid-19-vaccine.htm

College wins prestigious Investors in People gold accreditation Barnsley College has been awarded a We Invest in People Gold Accreditation. The Investors in People (IIP) gold award is only achieved by 17% of organisation members of IIP and highlights the College’s commitment to investing in the development and wellbeing of staff. Gold accreditation means that the College has got the policies in place to support and develop staff but more than that, it means everyone – whether senior leaders or apprentices takes ownership for making those policies come to life. The College’s latest staff survey earlier this year showed that 94% of staff at Barnsley College, Barnsley Sixth Form College and Barnsley College Higher Education agreed that it is a good place to work, with 95% of staff said that they had gained new skills in their role. Paul Devoy, CEO of Investors in People, said: “We’d like to congratulate Barnsley College.

Gold accreditation on We invest in people is a fantastic effort for any organisation, and places the College in fine company with a host of organisations that understand the value of people.” Commenting on the award, Yiannis Koursis, Principal and Chief Executive of Barnsley College, said: “Our staff are at the heart of our outstanding College and I am delighted that we have achieved Gold Accreditation from Investors in People. “The last 18 months, as for many organisations, have been incredibly challenging but we, as a College, have thrived and developed further during this time. Our transformation does indeed extend to the lives of our staff as well as our students and I would like to thank them all for their continued hard work.” Photo: Yiannis Koursis, Principal and Chief Executive of Barnsley College

Changes to isolation rules As of, Monday 16 August, people who are double jabbed or aged under 18 will no longer be legally required to self-isolate if they are identified as a close contact of a positive Covid-19 case. The changes announced form part of the Government’s step 4 of the Covid-19 roadmap and mean that double jabbed individuals and under 18s who are identified as a close contact of a positive Covid-19 case by NHS Test and Trace will no longer legally need to self-isolate. Instead, they should take a PCR test as soon as possible to check if they have the virus and for variants of concern. If they test positive, they should isolate. People can order a PCR home test online or by calling 119 or going to a test site. They will not be required to self-isolate while they wait for the results. However, for these changes to apply you must not have symptoms of the virus (that would make you a “case”) and you must have had a second dose of an MHRA-approved vaccine in the UK vaccination programme at least 14 days prior to contact with a positive case. Anyone who does test positive following the PCR test will still be legally required to self-isolate, irrespective of their vaccination status or age in order to break onwards chains of transmission. Similarly, anyone who develops Covid-19 symptoms should still self-isolate and get a PCR test and remain in isolation until the result comes back. Alongside PCR testing for anyone with symptoms or who is a close contact, everyone in England is encouraged to take up the government’s offer of free, twice weekly rapid testing to find additional cases among people who do not have symptoms. Groups who are still required to self-isolate after 16 August, should they be identified as a close contact of a positive Covid-19 case:

• Those who have not received their Covid19 vaccination • Those who have not received both doses of their Covid-19 vaccination • Those who have received their second dose within the last 14 days • Those who have tested positive after a PCR test • Those who are displaying Covd-19 symptoms, even if they have had both vaccinations (ahead of getting a PCR test) Under 18’s Ahead of pupils and students returning to school and college in September, Step 4 will also see the removal of ‘bubbles’ and social distancing for all children under 18, and schools will no longer need to stagger start and finish times. This is to minimise disruption to schooling and education in the new term. Secondary school and college students will be asked to take two onsite tests on return, followed by twice weekly testing at home. The Government has said that it will review testing requirements by the end of September.  Health and care workers The changes also mean that most double vaccinated health and social care staff who are close contacts of cases will be able to routinely return to work, provided they have no symptoms and have had a negative PCR test. Daily Lateral Flow Device (LFD) tests will need to be taken for 10 days as a precaution. Double vaccinated people identified as close contacts are still at risk of being infected and people are advised to consider other precautions such as wearing a face covering in enclosed spaces, and limit contact with other people, especially with anyone who is clinically extremely vulnerable.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Fly tipping I’ve just seen your letters section in this week’s paper about fly tipping and think that my neighbour has done that. He’s recently had a new bathroom suite put in and he refuses to go to the tip to get rid of stuff. He’s been up early on a morning which is out of character and I swear thats his toilet. He dumps his garden waste in the black bin and burns plastic and rubber items at the top of his garden. He’s also been out early today so if anything else has been dumped at the coop itll be him I guarantee it. Thanks Note: If anybody wishes to report fly tipping please report on the following web page: www.sheffield.gov.uk/form/new-highways/ report-fly-tipping

City partners pledge to deliver new street tree strategy which outlines a long-term and exemplary vision to promote and enhance a network of street trees that Sheffield can be proud of. The strategy aims to ensure the city has street trees which are well-maintained and cared for; resistant to the threats of disease and climate change and delivering many benefits for people and our environment. In March, a final version of the strategy was approved by Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet, following a consultation which asked for people’s views during 2020.

A commitment to deliver on a new street tree strategy for Sheffield has been made by the founding members of the Sheffield Street Tree Partnership.

This morning, representatives of each of the partner organisations came together to sign a pledge committing them to delivering on the Sheffield Street Tree Partnership Strategy,

The Sheffield Street Tree Partnership includes representatives from the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, Sheffield City Council and its contractor, Amey, The Woodland Trust and members of the Sheffield Tree Action Groups. Along with a clear strategic vision, measurable outcomes and detailed actions, the strategy includes the introduction of volunteer street tree wardens across the city and proposes a collaborative and communityled approach to caring for trees growing in all local areas. Liz Ballard, Chief Executive of the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust and Chair of the Sheffield Street Tree Partnership group said: "This pledge by all partners marks the start of a new chapter for our Sheffield street trees and how they are looked after into the future. To have the Council, Amey and community partners commit to deliver this strategy for the benefit of Sheffield – its community and its trees - is the great result of our hard work over the last two years. “I would like to thank all the partners who have been involved in developing and finalising Sheffield’s street tree strategy. The group came together in difficult and strained

circumstances, but we have become a great partnership, working together to achieve our common vision both now and in the long term. " Kate Josephs, Chief Executive at Sheffield City Council said: “This pledge marks a milestone for our city’s street trees, following collaboration and dedication from all partners to produce the new strategy. “The creation of a new city-wide strategy and commitment to deliver this together for the benefit of Sheffield residents ensures that our renowned green heritage can thrive and be properly cared for, so that not only us, but our future generations, can enjoy a thriving street tree stock. “Our commitment to this strategy is just the beginning; we know the hard work is yet to come. “Through this new approach, we will make sure our street trees are sustainably and carefully managed and maintained in accordance with best practice whilst increasing canopy cover and engaging the wider community of all ages in caring for and valuing our trees. “From cleaning the air that we breathe to providing local environmental benefits like shade, natural traffic calming and reducing verge and pavement parking, we want to harness all the advantages that trees bring to our developing society, guaranteeing their place in our future. “Some of this work is already underway and crucially, the process of giving people the opportunity to have their say on street tree decisions has already started, with many residents already taking part in the individual trees consultations via CitizenSpace in recent months.”

Ogley knock gives New Lakes Stocksbridge win record for Nicky However quick wickets were lost with the middle order being removed cheaply without troubling the score. At 52-6 the 1st XI were in a bit of a pickle and needed a partnership to have a chance of winning the game. Joe Hibbert joined Steve Perry at the crease and the pair of them weathered the storm and looked to tick things over. The pair of them looked to start to take control and put the 1st XI back in control. With 9 overs remaining Hibbert hit the winnings runs to give the 1st a four wicket victory. Hibbert finished on 27 not out and Perry 20 not out, the pair of them sharing a match winning stand of 51 to get the 1st XI over the line in a difficult second innings of the game. The 1st XI welcome Sheffield Centralians to Bracken Moor with three league games to go in the season. Stocksbridge 2nd XI 206-9 (C Ogley 73, J Murfin 53) Sheffield Centralians 155-6

Sheffield University Staff 100 all out (A Hibbert 4-17, J Newton 4-29) Stocksbridge 1st XI 103-6 (J Hibbert 27 not out, S Perry 20 not out)

The 1st XI travelled to Uni Staff looking to keep the pressure on top of the league Totley. Skipper Andy Hibbert, won yet again another important toss and elected to ball first. As they always do, they tend to strike early and it was skipper Hibbert who led from the front. He picked up two early wickets and was backed up by the returning Callum Haywood from the other end who was back in the 1st team. Uni Staff were 19-3 and in all sorts of trouble. Hibbert struck twice more, this was becoming a real captains performance. He finished his spell with 4-17 off his 10 overs. Uni Staff needed a partnership to keep in the game but it never looked like coming and the bowlers kept picking up wickets to restrict the score. Jack Newton came into the attack with his variation and spin and started to skittle out the Uni staff batsmen. He started to bamboozle the batsmen, who didn’t have any answers to the variation he was bowling. He picked up 4-29 off 7.1 overs to reduce Uni Staff to 100 all out. A brilliant bowling and fielding performance once again from the 1st. Openers Price and Newton took to the crease looking to get off to a flying start to put Uni Staff on the back foot. However they were both were removed early with the score 20-2. Andrew Hirst came to the crease at 3 and hit a couple of boundaries to try and release some pressure after a slow start.

Stocksbridge entertained Sheffield Centralians this weekend, looking to bounce back after last week’s defeat. Stocksbridge batted first, with regular openers Firth and Ogley opening up. Firth fell early for 5, but Ogley looked comfortable. Chris Ogley and Ant Siddall formed an excellent 2nd wicket partnership, with both batsmen moving into the 30s with ease. Siddall eventually fell for a well made 36, forming a 77 run partnership with Ogley in the process. Chris Ogley brought up his first half century of the season and looked in fine touch. Newton and Hague fell cheaply, bringing Jack Murfin to the crease. Murfin took to the Centralians bowlers immediately, dispatching boundaries to all parts. Ogley was finally dismissed for a superb 73, leaving Murfin to power Stocksbridge to a formidable total. Murfin brought up his half century in very quick time, as Stocksbridge posted 206-9. Ogley top scored with 73, brilliantly supported by Murfin (53) and Siddall (36). Centralians reply with the bat started well, with both openers riding their luck early and forming a strong partnership. After a couple of dropped catches and misfortune, Jack Murfin dismissed opener Stow for 46. Young leg spinner Jack Firth then dismissed the Centralians number 3 for just 3, before Murfin dismissed captain Wainwright for 30. Centralians were now 87-3 with a mountain to climb with under 15 overs left to play. Thwaites brought himself and Rowan Brearley back into the attack and the plan worked immediately, with Thwaites clean bowling Dawson for 1. Thwaites and Brearley then removed the dangerous pair of Farnsworth and Bajwa respectively, leaving Centralians well short of their required total, finishing on just 155. 2 wickets for Thwaites and Murfin, with one each for youngsters Brearley and Firth. Penistone running coach Nicky Spinks set a new women’s Lake District 24 hour record at the weekend. She reached Braithwaite at 2-45am on Sunday morning breaking the previous record set in 2020. The challenge involves summiting as many peaks over 2,000 feet, starting and returning to the same point in 24 hours. Nicky matched the number of 65 peaks but completed the round in a quicker time than that set in 2020 by Carol Morgan. Ten Penistone runners competed in the Wharncliffe Sider with Rose 5 mile trail race at Wharncliffe woods. First man back for Penistone in eighteenth place was Martin Ball in 33-44, first Penistone lady back was Julia Johnson in 40-25. There were top three age group placings for Richard Mackie (over50 men), Ian Sutcliffe (over60 men) and Julia Johnson (over55 ladies). Further afield in Derbyshire there were age group category wins for Sarah Williams (over40 ladies) and Julie Darigala (over50 ladies) at the Ricky’s Race at Darley Bridge. Shaun Dimelow maintained his rich vein of form by breaking the over50 men’s course record at the Wakefield Parkrun. Shaun came second overall in a time of 17-20. Graihagh Turner was first lady at the St Mary’s Parkrun in a time of 20-01 which was also a course record for the over14 girl’s age category. Stocksbridge Golf Club celebrated the annual President's Day on 14 August with some fine golf. With good weather conditions, although the wind was strong from the west, and the course set up for all levels of golfers, it was a day for great scores. That is exactly what happened, with 27 competitors playing at or better than standard scratch. The overall field of golfers was around 100 players and 4 points separated the top 16.

The main purpose for the day was to celebrate the history of the Club (97 years old) and to support its President, John Yeates. Golf is a competitive sport though and there inevitably has to be winners. For this day there were two worthy winners - Elaine Guest (30) for the Ladies Presidents Spoon with a stableford score of 42 points. Dennis Haley (16) won the Gents Presidents Putter also with 42 points. Both are pictured with Club President, John Yeates and the Ladies and Gents Captains, Helen Moffett and Alan Revill. John was delighted to be able to hold the evening presentation ceremony in the clubhouse now that Covid restrictions are lifting. In his speech, John made special mention of the quality of the course and thanked Robert Grayson (Head Greenkeeper) and his staff. John said "I am so pleased that we are now able to enjoy golf on a magnificent course and be able to meet socially in the clubhouse. It is great that we can now use all the facilities of the Club without restrictions." Earlier in the week the Dragons Section enjoyed a very strong 6-0 win over the visiting Hillsborough Golf Club Seniors Team. Dragons Captain, Dave Stringer, said that "along

with the 6-0 away win at Hillsborough earlier in the season, that was a tremendous result." Dave is hoping for two more away wins at Waterside and Beauchief for an unbeaten season of seniors' team golf. The next day the Dragons competed for the Veterans Vintage Vase. The competition was won by Pete Hodkin (20)who scored 42 points, a round that included a hole in one on the 17th. Frank Hines (25)was second with 38 points and John Sykes (17)third with 36 points. Further down the leaderboard Mick Mosforth also celebrated a hole in one on the difficult par 3 6th. Suffice to say there was a good supply of whisky on the bar for members to enjoy. On Sunday 15 August the Ladies Section competed for the Olivia Rose Bowl. Sam Wood (49)a new member at the club, won with 36 points. Elaine Guest (29)carried on her good form over the weekend and was second with 35 points. Bev Sykes (27)was third with 34 points. There were two further Gents competitions through the week. Firstly, a Pro's Prize Stableford on 12 August which was won by Alec Cowling (22) with a score of 40 points. Julian Wilkinson (26)was second with 37 points and George Grimmer (14)third with 37 points as well, but losing out on countback. Then on Sunday 15 August, the Gents competed for the Cumberland Cup. Ben Stringer (5)won with a very strong 42 points that included four birdies. Paul Blake (8)was second with 40 points, the same score as Curt Newton (20), but with a better back 9.

CHURCH OUT OF THE CUP Penistone Church FC 1-2 Lower Breck

A report by Martin Webb A bumper crowd of 302 attended this FA Cup extra preliminary round replay, which Church eventually lost 2-1. Church took the lead in the 26th minute when Jordan Coduri’s low cross eluded the defence and Luke Stewart was there on the far post to finish neatly with the goalie stranded. Lower Breck equalised just before half-time to setup an eventful second-half. The second half opened up at a frantic pace with the ball visiting both keepers in the first 2 minutes. Tom Charlesworth swept a cross in from the left, the clearance went long and Church conceded a corner. Anthony Brown met the corner from the left and swept it in on the half volley to the middle of goal just under the crossbar.

Sherwood Colliery 3-1 Penistone Church FC Scorer for Church – Kieran Ryan 18

Manager Ian Richards

A report by Martin Webb

We started really well, positive on the front foot, we were the better team for the first twenty minutes, we played some good football, we won the ball up high that resulted in our goal, there was great pressure from Nicky Guest and Kieran Ryan and a good finish from Kieran to go one-nil up. We were again controlling the game away from home, making it difficult for their mid-fielders (Jamie York and Will Norcross) to get on the ball. We stopped their dangerous players getting forward to get any chance and then with one bit of skill we were a little bit too high, a little bit flat footed and we conceded a dubious penalty. Sometime they’re given and sometimes not.

On a warm overcast afternoon Church visited a well laid out ground with long lush grass. Church opened the scoring again with Kieran Ryan, on 18 minutes. He received a deflected cross from the right. Brought the ball under control and from 12 yards out to the centre of goal beat the goalkeeper low to the right. The home-side equalised from the penalty spot before the break to take the sides in at half-time all-square.

Church had one last golden chance at the near post that was headed wide.

It took only 4 minutes of the second-half for Sherwood to get their noses in front, when a shot trickled under the despairing hands of goalkeeper Chris Snaith.

The crowd had seen a high quality game which could have gone either way right until the last minute. On balance Lower Breck deserved to win and both teams received a warm round of applause at the end.

Church piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser with 2 successive corners but in a desperate bid to snatch a draw Church threw everyone up front only for Sherwood to clear and score a third.

Forthcoming Fixtures:

The sparse crowd of 100 with some 30 Church fans, had seen an entertaining match with 4 goals and some excellent football. Church

STEELS DRAW BLANK

Tiger’s star crowned British champion

Stocksbridge PS 0-0 Stockton Town

Stocksbridge did have a slow start but did grow into the game and had chances of their own. Nathaniel Crofts got a great chance when the ball was played into him in space by Stockton keeper Lewis McDonald was quick to it and gave the winger no space to get a good shot off.

Stocksbridge Park Steels claimed their first clean sheet in 11 months after a 0-0 draw with Stockton Town. Both sides had chances to win the game. Jonathan Franks smashed the bar early on and Mikey Roberts had his goalbound shot blocked by Liam McFadyen. For the Steels, they hit the post on two occasions with both Lewis Whitham and Joe Lumsden being foiled by the woodwork.

Much like the first half, Stockton started off as the better team. While Stocksbridge had the first shot, a Sam Finlaw effort which went wide, it was the Anchors who had the better chances. Jamie Owens went clear on goal but a Liam McFadyen tackle took the sting out of the shot which allowed Hall to clear.

Then came the numerous times the Steels rattled the woodwork. Lewis Whitham’s initial shot was saved, but Stockton only cleared it so far and the young winger was soon on the ball. Same as before he cut inside from the left wing and curled it and the shot found its way onto the post. Just a minute later, a good ball was whipped in for Joe Lumsden’s glancing header to whip it onto Stockton could have had their the post to the relief of a flailing first goal ever in the Northern McDonald. The big chance came later on. Substitute Josh Nodder forced a saved from McDonald, though he could only palm it in front of him. Ruthven got onto the ball first and sent the shot wide with a big sigh of relief from the Stockton defence. Stocksbridge are in league action again in midweek away against Osset United. Attentions turn to the cup at the weekend with Steels making the short trip to Oliver’s Mount where they’ll face Handsworth FC in an all Sheffield FA Cup tie, 3pm KO.

“It feels pretty good. I have been thinking about this for the last couple of weeks and it’s so nice to come in and pull it off,” Ellis, who finished third in his first heat, told Eurosport “I had a good draw to be fair and was pretty consistent with the inside gate."

Bewley made a flying start at his home track as he won his opening heat in impressive fashion. But after eight heats it was a four-way tie at the top of the standings between Lewis Kerr, Steve Worrall, Kyle Howarth and Scott Nicholls.
