‘Lucky’ Jim back walking after fall from cliff

CAOS MTS is looking for Guys & Dolls

CAOS Musical Theatre Society is a musical theatre group based in the north of Sheffield and are currently looking for new members to join them for their next production of Guys & Dolls which they will perform at Rotherham Civic Theatre in April 2022.

Jim ‘I may be gone a while’ Morton, started a monumental task back in April of this year. He began an adventure of a lifetime in his quest to visit every lighthouse on mainland Great Britain, by foot! A dream he has held ever since his father back in 1967 bought a young ‘Jim’ a Road Map of Great Britain. However an eventful day last week saw his dream very nearly come to an abrupt end.

on the 12 April, but ended up being airlifted to Inverness Hospital after a fall off a cliff edge nearly ended his pursuit prematurely. Stuck on a cliff ledge, on the west coast of Scotland, the 60 year-old went for a leap to a nearby tree and ended up falling, later to be rescued by the coast guard helicopter, and airlifted to Inverness hospital. A broken thumb and a bleed on the brain were diagnosed.

Jim has walked a staggering 1,500 miles since he set off in Penistone

After a couple of days rest Jim was back on the road walking again! His quest will take approximately 7,000-7,500 miles and between 12-15 months. Jim has raised £5,000 so far of £50,000 in support of gurkhas. You can follow Jim’s progress on facebook and instagram i may be gone a while with Jim hoping to raise £50,000 for Gurkha Welfare Trust. His minute by minute progress can be monitored using the Strava app.

CAOS MTS (formally known as Chapeltown Amateur Operatic Society) have been entertaining audiences across South Yorkshire since 1924 and over the years have performed at many venues across the region. The last time the society were together was in March 2020, 2 weeks before they were due to go on stage, when due to the pandemic they had to immediately stop rehearsing and sadly abandon their show. The members are now looking forward to being back in the rehearsal room for the first time in 18 months to begin preparing for the well-loved musical Guys & Dolls. CAOS usually rehearse on Wednesday nights between 7.45pm and 10pm at the School Room behind High Green Methodist church in Sheffield.

There is no audition to become a member, just a willingness to get involved and have fun. Membership is for people who are 16+ at the time the show is performed in April 2022 and members are aged from 16 years upwards. As well as performing, CAOS also host lots of social events throughout the year which are fun for all the family. If you are interested in finding out more please call CAOS secretary Julia Hughes on 0114 2848381 or simply come to the welcome meeting on Wednesday 1st September, 7.45pm which will be held at the Niagra Centre, Niagra Road, Sheffield, S6 1LU, where you will hear about all things Guys & Dolls as well as meet the rest of the members. Please note that in the weeks following the society will return to their usual rehearsal hall in High Green, Sheffield. Even if you don’t want to be on stage but would like to join the society behind the scenes, CAOS would love to hear from you. CAOS look forward to welcoming lots of new members for what is set to be a fantastic show in April 2022.

Stocksbridge Penistone By pervert spared jail The Sea Final Line-up Announce A pervert who was caught by police three times with indecent images of children has been spared from jail, writes Jon Cooper for The Sheffield Star. Sheffield Crown Court heard on August 19 how Daniel Ledger, aged 29, of Woolley Road, Stocksbridge, Sheffield, committed a total of nine offences of making indecent images of children after he had downloaded them from the internet.

Fatima Zafar, prosecuting, said: “The police were first alerted when there was a mobile phone device of this defendant’s used for up-loading indecent images in March, 2019. "At that time, police were already aware of this defendant who was on the Sex Offenders Register after a caution in March, 2017, for one offence of possession of indecent images.” Ms Zafar added Ledger’s mobile phone was seized and other devices were seized including laptops and police found 93 category A indecent images, 53 category B indecent images and 85 category C indecent images, with category A being the most serious.

The final line-up has been announced for this weekend’s “Penistone By The Sea” event which takes place this Saturday 28 August between 11:30am and 4:30pm in Penistone town centre. Volunteers are ‘taking over’ several zones around the centre of Penistone and filling them with seaside themed stalls and activities. The three zones are: • Skegness (aka Penistone Paramount car park) – sponsored by CD Autos • Whitby (aka Penistone Community Centre car park) – sponsored by Pennine Law • Scarborough (aka Penistone Market Barn) – sponsored by Simon Blyth estate agents Visitor to “Skegness” (aka Penistone Paramount car park – sponsored by CD Autos) should bring their buckets and spades ready to play in the mobile beach before putting their feet up, relaxing in an oversized deckchair. There will be a seaside organist (because we do like to be beside the seaside). Bigger kids can have a go at the inflatable assault course, while younger ones try out hooka-duck and hoopla. And all family can enjoy some local-

ly-cooked fish and chips and an ice-cream. “Whitby” (aka St Johns Community Centre car park – sponsored by Pennine Law) is just a minute’s walk away, with its vintage funfair (swingboats and other activities), and children’s donkey rides. After a spot of face painting or a glitter tattoo, guests can take a selfie when they pop their heads through the seaside themed peep-thru boards. There might even be time for some candy floss, a donut or another ice-cream, while listening to some live open-air music. Continuing on to “Scarborough” (aka Penistone Market Barn – sponsored by Simon Blyth estate agents), guests can enjoy a fun-packed selection of stalls and seasidethemed activities in the market barn. Children of all ages can try their hand at a Circus workshop or just sit back in a deckchair to watch a Punch and Judy show. And if you fancy sinking your teeth into the full seaside experience, don’t miss out on the limited edition “Penistone” rock (kindly sponsored by Lincoln Finance Ltd)! There will also be loads of walk-about acts filling the streets, including balloon

modelling, a bubble cart and the unmissable Granny Turismo – high octane old ladies racing around on Segwaypowered shopping trollies! Several local pubs and restaurants are supporting the event, with the Spread Eagle and BARiSTA/CUCiNA both providing family-friendly music throughout the day and into the evening. In addition, a number of local shops and businesses are decorating their shops and joining in with the seaside theme. “We can’t wait to bring the seaside to Penistone,” explained Jon Gilbert, one of the Penistone Gala volunteers. “There are no entrance fees to get into the event and there should be loads for everyone to see and do.” The event is free to attend and will be run in line with any applicable COVID guidance. For more information, please visit www.penistonegala.co.uk

Ledger told police he had searched for indecent images of children but he had not been sexually aroused.

Police later became aware Ledger was using an email address to get indecent images of children, according to Ms Zafar, and a further investigation in 2020 discovered 63 category A images, 30 category B images, and 40 category C images. Ledger claimed he had been searching for adult pornography and he had clicked on other links which downloaded the indecent images. Ms Zafar added police attended his home a third time in May and his mobile phone and a PlayStation were seized and three category A indecent images were found along with two category B and four category C.

The defendant again claimed he had clicked on a link on an adult pornography website which had led him to the indecent images. Ledger pleaded guilty to the threes sets of offences of making indecent images. Michael Cane-Soothill, defending, said the court may take the view Ledger has not been able to help himself but his mother has stopped him from

using the internet and his PlayStation 4 console has been taken off him. Mr Cane-Soothill added Ledger was diagnosed as having learning difficulties as a youngster and he has said that he would like help in relation to his offending. Judge Sarah Wright told Ledger: “You have been convicted of possesing or making indecent images. That means you downloaded them from the internet for your own pleasure.” She added child pornography involves heartbreaking, serious sexual offences against young children and by downloading these images such offenders are seen as a threat to youngsters. However, Judge Wright said she believes there is a reasonable prospect of rehabilitation for Ledger and she urged him to engage with others who will help him address his issues. She sentenced Ledger to eight months of custody suspended for two years with a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and a sexual offending treatement programme. Judge Wright also ordered Ledger, who is subject to the Sex Offenders Register for ten years, to be made subject to a five year Sexual Harm Prevenetion Order.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Local car garage is keeping people safe this summer

Barnsley College expands T Levels from September a more technical pathway rather than following a purely academic pathway, or a work-based apprenticeship.

A local specialist car garage is keeping people safe this summer, after kindly carrying out essential work on vehicles used to rescue people. Woodhead Mountain rescue team, run entirely by volunteers is reliant on its Land Rover Defender to reach people in distress. Elite Land Rover Specialists, who are based in Deepcar have been able to carry out an MOT and Service completely free of charge

to help keep the team operational and the vehicle on the road. WMRT said “The team would like to say a huge thanks to the guys at Elite for the recent work that they have carried out on the teams Defender. As the defender is used for blue light response, often taken offroad and usually heavily loaded, it is imperative that it is safe to drive and in tip top condition ready for a callout - any time, any where - 24/7, 365 days.”

Barnsley College will be continuing to offer their Technical qualification (T Level) study programmes from September, with the addition of a brand new course. From September, the College will be offering a new T Level in Health and Social Care, joining existing T Levels in Digital, Education and Childcare, and Construction. Barnsley College were the first and only College in South Yorkshire to offer T Levels from their launch last year. T Levels were introduced in 2020 but with a year of teaching experience and a brand-new subject on offer, Barnsley College are ready to welcome the next cohort of students who are hoping to approach further education through

Golf Club League Team Finish Season on a High Promotion to Division 4 may have evaded Stocksbridge Golf Club League Team, but they ended the season on a high, thrashing Doncaster Town Moor 8-0. Danny Costello (5 and 4), Peter Finney (7 and 6), Matt Sedgwick (3 and 2) and Andrew Finney (8 and 6) all won their individual games convincingly. The squad (pictured with Club Captain Alan Revill) have played excellent golf all season, but a run of close away losses allowed a strong league position to slip towards the back end of the season. Team Captain, Liam O'Sullivan, also felt that "the league we were in had two very strong teams from Lindrick and Serlby, who both deservedly won promotion. 58 points from 12 matches would normally be enough to gain promotion." Club Captain, Alan Revill, said that "Stocksbridge Golf Club had a lot to be proud of with the League Team squad. I'm confident that next season they will be strong favourites for promotion." On 18 August, the Dragons Captain Home Day was hosted

by Dave Stringer. Conditions were good for golf and a good field of 30 seniors competed. The Captain ran two competitions for all competitors, a medal and a stableford. The medal winner was Pete Mannion (20) with a net 60. Pete played very steady golf for the round, never putting himself into trouble. Sandy Murphy (12) was second with a net 65, Bill Boucher (28) was third with a net 66 and Bob Mason (18) fourth with a net 68. In the Stableford competition, Club legend Stuart Marsden (29) won with 38 points. Frank Hines (25), Noel Weaver (16) and Pete Hodkin (18) all had 34 points but finished second, third and fourth respectively on countback. The previous day the Dragons had competed in a SUGC Seniors match at Waterfront Golf Club. For the first time this season they lost a match, but it was a close run game. The combined team score for the fixture was 225-211 points in favour of Waterfront. The aggregate total for the home and away fixtures finished 467-465 points in favour of Waterfront.

9

The Gents Section of the Club competed for the Wilson Cup, a two-day, stroke play competition, on the 21 and 22 August. Callum Brown was the overall winner with two excellent rounds of 67 and 65 and a net 132 score. Andrew Finney matched Callum's score with two 66s, but came second on countback. Andrew's brother, Peter, came third with a net 134. To demonstrate how competitive the play was, 8 more players finished within 6 shots of the winning score. Club Captain, Alan Revill, hosted the annual Past Captains Day on 20 August. The event is an opportunity for all past Captains to play golf and then socialise in the evening with meal prepared by the Club's catering staff. Plenty attended for the golf and even more for the evening meal. In terms of the golf Kevin Taylor (19) won the stableford competition convincingly with 44 points. Steven Haigh (14) was second with 36 points and Lawrence Guest (18) was third with 32 points. Alan raised a glass to the Past Captains, who all praised the excellent condition of the golf course.

Studied as a mixture of classroom or workshop-based learning and ‘on-thejob’ experience, students who complete a T Level will gain qualifications equivalent to three A Levels. They will also have the opportunity to continue into employment or Higher Education including higher or degree-level apprenticeships and higher-level technical study. By studying a T Level, students will gain a combination of technical knowledge and practical skills relevant to their chosen industry or occupation and, upon completion, a nationally recognised certificate which employers will use as evidence in their recruitment. Jorja Clive, current Education and Childcare T Level student, said: “I have chosen to study at Barnsley College because it offers an excellent Childcare T Level course. I enjoy learning new things and pushing myself to the best I can be; the tutors are so nice and supportive.”

Neil Johnson, Assistant Principal for Class Based Learning at Barnsley College, added: “One of the key benefits of studying a T Level is that they have been designed and developed in collaboration with leading businesses and employers so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares students for work, further training or study associated with the roles and expertise required for both current and future careers. “In addition, the minimum requirement of a 45-day industry placement ensures that students are able to apply the theoretical content and develop the practical and technical skills required in the occupation aligned to their career ambition.” There are still places left on T Level courses starting in September 2021 at Barnsley College. To apply, visit www. barnsley.ac.uk/be-anything. For more information about T Levels at Barnsley College, visit www.barnsley.ac.uk/t-levels or contact the friendly Information Team on 01226 216 123 or info@barnsley.ac.uk.

ing. Improving youngster Tom Fryers was first back for Penistone in 14th place. There were also age group wins for Becky Timms (over40 ladies) and Ray Brown (over80 men). Elsewhere on the fells Richard Cottam had a tough run at the Sedbergh Hills fell race which is 14 miles long and involves 6,000 feet of climbing. Despite a strong start where he was in 10th place at mile 4, Richard suffered from some nasty blisters after making the regrettable choice of wearing new trainers. He eventually finished in 46th place in a field of 70. The last Trunce of the year saw some strong performances from Penistone. In the junior race Graihagh Turner was first girl and third overall in a time of 15-30. In the senior race there were top 10 finishes for Phil Montgomery (3rd), Phil Hinchliffe (6th), Tom Fryers (7th) and Damian Kilpin (9th).

CHURCH HUMBLED AT HOME

Toolstation NCEL Premier Division Penistone Church 0-2 Silsden FC (h) Scorers for Silsden – Jack Normanton 18, Mohammed Qasim 85 Attendance – 166 A report by Martin Webb After an encouraging 2-2 draw in midweek away ay AFC Mansfield, this was Penistone Church's first league home game since their 4-0 win against Bottesford Town on 19 December 2020. The rain that had been threatening all morning arrived in short bursts an hour before kick-off. So the pitch was slick on top. Church managed the early defending and worked the ball into the Silsden half. Church made 3

Danny Howes' reverse pass opened up the midfield and a beautiful pass out to Nicky Guest was crossed, across the box but Jordan Coduri could not finish with his volley.

Some great football down the right from Church and a powerful shot was saved at the second attempt by the Silsden goalie. Church again won a corner from another great chance but could not beat the Silsden defence.

Church then created good pressure from a corner, but the 3 shots were either blocked or went wide.

Church conceded 3 corners in quick succession at the start of the second half. However, they

Church lost the ball in midfield and Silsden played it first time out to the right. The ball swung to the left and Chris Snaith could not hold the slippery shot from Jack Normanton.

Church were half asleep at a corner from the right. Silsden played the corner short, and Mo Qasim who was unmarked blasted the ball in to the right of goal from 18 yards.

Church looked like they had been awarded a penalty for a trip in the box, but instead the referee booked the Church player for simulation. Church then moved the ball down the right and a despairing block stopped Kurtis Turner's powerful shot.

Full-time PCFC 0 Silsden 2 The crowd of 166 had seen a battling performance from Church who lost to a Silsden team who converted 2 of their 4 chances. Manager Ian Richards It was bitterly disappointing to day, obviously with the result and the outcome losing our first home

league game, our first one on a Saturday in perfect football conditions, the pitch had been prepared well, there was no wind, a good attendance, we had a good preparation for the game but we just didn’t execute what we wanted to do, we repeated the same errors that we have made in previous games by giving teams two easy preventable and soft goals. We did a lot of good things up to and around the opponent’s penalty area but not being ruthless or clinical enough inside the box by not making the best decisions in terms of the final pass, cross or shot. Today we were a little bit too easy to play against which was disappointing. Friday 27th August 2021 Toolstation NCEL Premier Division Emley AFC v Penistone Church (a) Kick off 7-45 pm

HILTON DEPARTS AFTER CUP DEFEAT

After a dismal 5-2 drubbing by Handsworth FC in the FA cup qualifying round Steels confirmed that Chris Hilton has resigned as manager with immediate effect. Lee Thompson will take over managerial duties while the search for a new manager takes place. Crampton & Moore

Chris joined the club in 2014 and his remit was to stabilise the team after a couple of years flirting with relegation, he did that in his first year and created a squad that then went on to challenge in play off positions and have successful runs in the FA trophy competition. He also helped Harrison Biggins develop into a mature player who then went on to sign for Fleetwood Town FC.

Over the last two years I have worked closely with Chris in my role as chairman, unfortunately due to covid restrictions we have not had the luxury of finishing a full season which two years ago robbed us of a possible play off position. I have seen first hand the effort Chris puts into the managers role and I know he will not have taken his decision this weekend lightly but he has this club at heart and sometimes things just run their natural course ,I am sure Chris will be in great demand in the future and when he’s had chance to recharge his batteries he will be back in the dugout. We would like to wish Chris and his family all the best for the future.” Steels next fixture will have been played out on Tuesday evening at Eco-Power stadium with Lee Thompson in charge against Liversidge who have won both of their opening fixtures in the league. Followed by a home game on Saturday 28 August 3pm KO v Pickering Town. Bank holiday Monday also sees a home league fixture, 3pm KO v Yorkshire Amatuers.
