TRIBUTES PAID TO FORMER CLLR WHO HAS DIED SUDDENLY AGED 56 Writes Lucy Ashton, Local Democracy Reporter.

bridge Cricket Club, latterly as a wicketkeeper.

Former Lib Dem Council Leader, Lord Paul Scriven, also paid tribute.

A former Sheffield councillor and well known member of the community has died suddenly at the age of 56.

Alison said: “It was his birthday last week and we went for a lovely walk on Sunday and he said to me that evening that he had had a really nice day.

“Martin was a person who was driven by a Liberal agenda of getting the best for the people of Stocksbridge.

Martin Brelsford was a Liberal Democrat councillor for Stocksbridge between 1998 and 2011 and a former Cabinet member. He most recently stood for election in the ward in May’s local elections. He died on Monday and leaves his wife Alison, his two sons Ewan, 20, and William, 15, and sister Kay. Mr Brelsford was part of a political family – his late mother and father, Malcolm and Maureen, were both Stocksbridge councillors, as was Alison. He had worked at Aviva for the past 15 years and was a keen player with Stocks-

“Martin cared so much about his community. When he lost his seat on the council, he could have been a candidate in other areas and been a councillor somewhere else in the city but he didn’t want to do that because he was passionate about Stocksbridge.” Lib Dem Leader Coun Shaffaq Mohammed said: “The sudden death of my friend and colleague Martin is truly tragic. My thoughts are with his wife Alison and their sons. Martin was a passionate advocate for his local community in Stocksbridge.”

“On a personal note I drew on his knowledge when Leader of the Council and enjoyed his company, wit and at times mischief. “He was a force for good for Stocksbridge and Sheffield and I will miss his presence. My heart and love go out to Alison and the two young men he leaves.” A meeting of Sheffield full council on Wednesday held a minute’s silence in memory of Mr Brelsford. The coroner has been informed and funeral arrangements are not yet in place.

Absolutely heartbroken by this news this week. Martin was a wonderful friend, colleague and campaigner. Utterly passionate about Stocksbridge. Hannah Kitching (on social media) more tributes on page 10...

SHEFFIELD'S 'MAN WITH A PRAM COMPLETES GREAT NORTH RUN, AGED 82

Bag it for Bluebell returns to Fox Valley

Fox Valley shoppers will have the chance to empty their wardrobes and clear their cupboards as ‘Bag it for Bluebell’ returns to Stocksbridge. The shopping centre will be hosting the charity on Friday, September 24th to coincide with its popular weekly market. From there Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice will be visiting the shopping complex on the last Friday of each month for the rest of the year. The partnership began in 2020, with shoppers donating a record breaking 473 bags of pre-loved items on the first ever ‘Bag it’ day at Fox Valley. Terri Hanson, Head of Retail at Bluebell Wood, said: “We’ve been blown away by the generosity of Fox Valley shoppers and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for us in the months ahead. “Our Bag it for Bluebell days are always fantastically well received and, with each bag collected worth an Sheffield fundraising legend John Burkhill proved once again that age is just a number as he completed his 25th Great North Run, aged 82. The Man With a Pram, as he is affectionately known, joined some 57,000 other runners lining up for the race – described by organisers

as the world’s ‘biggest and best’ half marathon – on Sunday. It was his second big race in a week, having given himself just days to recover from finishing the Asda Foundation Leeds 10K, which was set up in his good friend Jane Tomlinson’s memory, last Sunday, Sep 5.

average of £15, people’s kindness helps us make a real difference to local children and families. “We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone for their support so far and to our charity partner Fox Valley for hosting us.” Bluebell Wood’s collection van will be parked near Iceland and Home Bargains, and all necessary safety precautions will be in place to make sure people feel safe when donating their items. The charity kindly asks that supporters only donate clothing that is in a very good condition, as they are unable to sell any items that are stained or torn. In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window.

teamwork between our roads policing officers, dog handlers and dispatchers we were able to locate the vehicle and have five males under arrest as they left the area in another car, in less than an hour of the burglary taking place.”

IT was a case of putting best feet and paws forward when Danielle Cardwell set herself a fundraising challenge in support of St Luke’s Hospice.

Danielle decided to devote the whole of August to walking 150 kilometres in memory of uncle Terry Dawson. That meant many walks in the hills above her Stocksbridge home - always accompanied by pet dog Bonnie! “My uncle was cared for by the St Luke’s Community team and we were really grateful for what they did for him,” said Danielle. “The family have done the St Luke’s Night Strider in 2018 and 2019 - walking as Terry’s Yorkshire Puddings - but I decided I’d like to some fundraising of my own too. “The longest distance I ever walked as part of the challenge was from where I work in Chapeltown back home to

Stocksbridge, but mainly I walked locally.

“We have a trig point up near us so I walked up there and out to Bolsterstone too.” Things did come to a halt for a week when Danielle had to self isolate following a Covid alert but she still managed to get the full 150km completed before the end of the months and she has now raised £660. “In the end I did 23 walks and I’m over the moon to have raised so much,” said Danielle. “I loved doing it and would do it again - but Bonnie is absolutely exhausted!” There’s still time to support Danielle and Bonnie. CAPTAIN TOBIAS: SHEFFIELD BOY, 10, COMPLETES IRONMAN CHALLENGE

Council commits to tackling Food Poverty in the city Food Poverty is a growing issue not just in Sheffield but across the UK. In response Sheffield Labour councillors have pushed forward with further action to tackle the rising food poverty. There is also concern that the forthcoming cuts to Universal Credit will mean even more people having to rely on food banks. Labour have called on Sheffield City Council to enact a ‘Local Food Access Plan’ to pull together all the work being undertaken in the city to combat food poverty, and to help better support all Sheffield organisations working to tackle food poverty, including food banks. Councillors have also demanded that government enshrine into law a person’s ‘right to food’ meaning that the government’s is held accountable for their failings on food poverty, and that everyone should be able to afford and access food. Labour Councillors Ruth Milsom (Crookes and Crosspool) and Sophie Wilson (Park and Arbourthorne) proposed the action and issued the following statement: ‘No one in Sheffield should go hungry. ‘We want to do everything we can to make sure this doesn’t happen, but as a council we are painfully aware that there is no pot of government money to bail us out of a food crisis. The council has lost 50% of its funding – around £450 million – since 2010. But as a city we do have rich veins of human kindness and physical resources to draw on. Sheffield’s Covid pandemic response has demonstrated that then city has the will to ensure that everybody is fed.

A boy who raised more than £150,000 for charity during the pandemic has finished a year-long Ironman challenge. Tobias Weller, 10, from Sheffield, who has cerebral palsy and autism, set himself a series of challenges including running a marathon last year. He completed the last few meters of a 4km (2.5 mile) swim on Saturday and crowds cheered him on at the end of a 180km (112 mile) trike on Sunday.

Finishing the epic challenge, he said he felt "magnificent". Flanked by supporters in Millhouses Park, the young fundraiser said he was "chuffed to bits" - something which has since become his catchphrase. Inspired by the fundraising efforts of Captain Sir Tom Moore, he was nicknamed "captain" and went on to meet his hero.

He announced his Ironman challenge during the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year show in December, when he won the inaugural Captain Sir Tom Moore Young Unsung Hero Award. After crossing the finish line of his latest challenge, Tobias said: "It feels magnificent. "This challenge has taken me over a year complete. And I'm so excited I've finally reached my goal. I feel awesome."

‘While a local food access plan cannot reverse the government’s welfare changes, it can hopefully mitigate their impact, by empowering food support networks in the city. ‘We want the council to go further in supporting the work of the wonderful voluntary organisations in the city, and help to ensure a co-ordinated and hands-on approach to addressing food poverty. At a time when the pandemic is causing the number of people in crisis to escalate, it is especially urgent to have a local strategy in place’

MP visits Friendship Lunch in Chapeltown It was a pleasure to have Miriam Cates MP as a surprise guest at the newly restarted Friendship Lunch at the Norfolk Arms in Chapeltown.

The event is aimed at combating/reducing loneliness and social isolation. Miriam gave a wonderful speech and said "It was wonderful to join the Friendship Lunch at the Norfolk Arms and meet people from the local community. It’s great that people are starting to come back together again, and events like these present a fantastic opportunity to meet friends old and new. “ The lunch was sponsored by two brilliant local charities, SOAR and People

Keeping Well, and poster sponsor, Norrie Waite Slater.

Miriam Cates MP said “It was lovely to meet the organiser of the event Kathy Markwick who has worked so hard to continue events like these virtually over recent months. Friendship lunches bring together those people at a greater risk of social isolation, which is so important to many as we emerge from the pandemic. “The past 18 months have shown us that what really count in people’s lives are friends, family and the day-to-day interactions we have with each other.

Although Westminster politicians are often focussed on broad national issues, I’m very aware that what matters to people is what’s happening on the ground in the community, and I look forward to meeting with other community groups and charities across the constituency, and joining in some of the exciting projects they have planned.” If you would like to join one of the upcoming Friendship Lunches which Kathy has organised, please email her at kathymarkwick@gmail.com or call on 07729 528844. The next event is on Thursday 14 October 2021.

Everybody’s talking about Jamie The Amazon Prime Video premiere of the new Everybody’s Talking About Jamie film is being held at the Crucible on Friday 17th September, with a red carpet arrival at Tudor Square. To build anticipation for the premiere events across the road from Tudor Square, Gut Level DJs will be performing in the Winter Garden between 4 and 6pm before the stars arrive. Sheffield City Council is funding Cinema For All community screenings in venues across the city (with 10% of tickets being held back and split equally between local charities via Sheffield organisation Ticket Bank and the NHS Tickets for Good program). Tickets for these screenings were snapped up in just a few minutes, but the details surrounding the costume and prop display, as well as a list of venues hosting parties on the night of the ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’ premiere, have now also been released so

that everyone can celebrate what this film means to the city.

On 17 September the Winter Gardens will be hosting a special display of items from Jamie’s world. This up close and personal display features four outfits worn by Max Harwood, who plays Jamie Campbell in the film, as well as a dress and wig worn by Hugo’s iconic drag persona Miss Loco Chanelle, played on screen by Richard E.Grant. Also included will be the black dress Jamie Campbell actually wore when attending his high school prom (as featured in the original documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16). Jamie’s money jar and high heeled shoes, as well as the ‘Jamie’ lights from one of the film’s iconic sequences, will also be on display. From 20-25 September, fan art from the Everybody’s Talking About Jamie Fan Club will be on display. The Fan Club have got together to share their stories - from

when they first saw the original show at the Crucible Theatre, to the way the @ETAJamieFans twitter account was created and their excitement about the movie. Photographs and fan art will be showcased to chart Jamie's journey from Sheffield to the West End and beyond.

The final day of the display, Saturday 25th September, has some extra special involvement from those who were part of the film. There will be dance performances from Sheffield Performing Arts, whose young people took part in the filming of Everybody's Talking About Jamie as supporting artists. There will also be a special Q&A featuring Mark Herbert (joint CEO of Warp Films and one of the film’s producers) and some special guests, talking about the making of the film and the role Sheffield had to play in its creation and all things Jamie.

Disruption to breast cancer across treatments and care over the past 18 months have made the already frightening time of a breast cancer diagnosis even tougher for those faced with this difficult news, and the support we provide and hope our research generates has never been more essential. We remain determined to be there the whole way through to support people when they need us and to make the research breakthroughs that continue “It is for this very reason that the BMA launched its to drive forward progress. ‘Support Your Surgery’ campaign encouraging as many members of the public as possible to support the Association’s call for Government investment You can play your part in helping us to do this by in general practice to provide more GPs and better joining people across the UK to wear it pink on 22 services. October, to raise funds for Breast Cancer Now. “The current situation is grave; the profession is on its last legs and the Government must take this seriously and invest in general practice as a matter of a priority. Not only are we seeing more and more of our already limited workforce leaving the profession due to burnout, but we are now at a point where patients will suffer if the Government do not urgently address the concerns that the BMA and many other medical bodies have been raising Baroness Delyth Morgan for far too long now.” Chief Executive, Breast Cancer Now

Clough Dyke - reply I have today read the letter from G Shepherd regarding Clough Dike in 9th sept issue. I would like to point out that it is factually incorrect, the stream that is polluted (it runs to the right hand side of the path as you walk down) is not Clough Dike and is not the Glen Stream. It is a stream that runs along Common Lane (by the side of Deepcar Golf Course) which is then culverted under the Ideal Homes estate.

Town’s Fund Consultation Evening On Wednesday 22nd September, Stocksbridge Community Forum is inviting all local residents to a consultation on the projects included in our Town’s Fund Bid.

This single item agenda meeting will start at 7pm and finish at 9pm, So the pollution is either coming down from that and will be held at The stream or is entering the culvert as it passes under Venue. the housing estate. Everyone is welcome to

BREAST CANCER Dear Editor, As we near Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, I’m calling on your readers to wear it pink, on 22 October. By taking part in the UK’s biggest and brightest fundraiser, readers can raise vital funds and help make life-changing breast cancer research and care happen at a time when it’s never been more needed. The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted how Breast Cancer Now has been able to support people affected by breast cancer – we had to postpone inperson meetings and repivot our support online, and our research was stalled when our labs were closed during the first lockdown. However, breast cancer remains the most common cancer in women in the UK, with one in seven women developing this devastating disease in their lifetime.

I have checked the Clough dike/Fox Glen stream as come along and listen it issues from its culvert and this is running clear. as well as ask questions and comment. Feel free to wear a mask Regards A Elliott and wrap up well as we need to ventilate the room!

Government failings leave GPs struggling to provide patients with the care they expect and deserve, says BMA

We’re sorry that this has taken so long to arrange. Stocksbridge Community Forum Many thanks Barbara Horsman

Responding to today’s media coverage that GPs in England are finding it increasingly difficult to guarantee ‘safe care’ Dr Richard Vautrey, BMA GP committee chair, said: “General practice went into this pandemic with too few family doctors,

a limited wider workforce, inadequate spaces, and a tonne of unmet Government promises. Government pledges to deliver more GPs remain unmet and as workload pressures now increase at an alarming rate due to the pandemic and the growing backlog of care, it is no wonder that many practices are struggling to provide patients with the good care that GPs want to deliver, and that patients expect and deserve.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Scarecrow trail

Thurgoland party in the park & Scarecrow trail was an astounding success, say organisers. “The community as a whole & neighbouring villages all thoroughly enjoyed the day. The weather was kind for us and hundreds of locals came to walk around the village admiring the fabulously created 'book' characters that had been made and displayed for everyone to enjoy. The three best scarecrows were 1st Minions, 2nd The Tiger who came to tea and 3rd Paddington Bear. Oone of the winners Andrea Daniels & family kindly donated their prize money to Thurgoland school PFSA who have obviously struggled with fundraising during the pandemic. Local bands including the 'Buspass Buskers' singing the great golden oldie classics and the brilliant soul singer 'Luther' played on the field all afternoon whilst the kids (and some adults) enjoyed races, fun and games. MorfittSmith Estate Agents and the developer Arncliffe Homes, who are currently building 23 new homes in the village, both very generously donated the prize money. The MorfittSmith New Homes Team clearly enjoyed getting involved with the community giving away their Smiffy Bear teddies to all the kids and prosecco to all the adults, this was a lovely way for them to introduce their fabulous new builds to potential buyers. Rachel Marshall & John Anderson are already thinking of ways to make it bigger & better next year, the village welfare AGM is to be held next Sunday at 7pm in Thurgoland Village Hall so if anyone is interested in getting involved please do come along.

Fantastic hockey Open Day Chapeltown HC held its season starting Open Day on Sunday at the Caribbean Club Ecclesfield, and boy what a day was had by all! The day started with the Juniors training and all our ‘newbies’ getting the basics of how to play hockey, lots of fun, running around and laughter! Then the adult players joined in for a series of mini-games of an unusual mixture of all the club players with juniors, leading to some very one sided ‘man on man or woman’ encounters on the field and heavily biased (in favour of our junior players) umpiring decisions. A very well prized raffle (39 prizes in all) was handsomely supported by players and parents and raised a goodly sum for the club (we are still counting the cash!!) The social gathering afterwards at the Royal British Legion in Chapeltown had a very well attended, with a great buffet and fiercely contested quiz with more than a few ‘light hearted’ moments! Rumour has it that one of the RBL ladies wishes to join our club and play. A very big thank you must go to our club day / raffle / quiz organisers Charlotte, Lucy and Mathew. If your child goes to any of the schools listed below you are just a mile (well the

school is!) from our Sunday training at the Caribbean Club. St Thomas Moore, Ecclesfield, Monteney, Harley Brooke, St Patricks, Beck Regular training for our Juniors will start on the 12 of September at the Caribbean Club in Ecclesfield in the following format;4 to 8 year olds and those new to the game 09:00 – 10:00 Developers (Generally aged 7 -12) from 09:00 through to 10:30 And finally the Transitioners (12+ and preparing for adult hockey) 10:30 – 12:00. Adult training still takes place on Wednesday at the Hallam University facility on Bawtry Road (from 8-10pm, S9 1UA) for both the Men’s and Ladies sections. We are still looking to recruit new or returning players. The official season starts on the 18th September but we are hoping to have a ‘preseason friendly’ between the men’s 2’s and 3’s on the 11th.

The Ann Reresby Trust is open for applications Applications are now being invited for the Ann Reresby Trust, a local charity to help female students in High Green. The Charity was founded in 1801, and uses the interest from money invested for educating girls within High Green “in such a manner as the trustees shall think proper.” Part of the original bequest was used to build a school in the village, however today the fund

The grant can be used to buy books, materials or equipment that will help with studies, and is open to any female student who lives in the village of High Green. Brett Lovell’s first game in charge ended in good spirits but Church were clearly disappointed with the result. However they had played well and had a brilliant attitude and on another day they would probably have drawn the game. New Manager Brett Lovell said “It’s been my first game in charge and there are a lot of emotions in me at the minute but one thing is I am completely and utterly proud of that group of players that have pulled that jersey on today for Penistone Church FC. In the game it’s self we did enough to at least get a draw or potentially a win but as always we’re performance driven and that performance today was back to Penistone Church standards.”

New manager: Brett Lovell took charge for his first game

Rugby ‘slip up on the road’ Hornsea 24 - 15 Stocksbridge RUFC Globe Travel sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby made the trip to the East Coast to tackle Hornsea RUFC at the weekend, and despite several 1st team regulars being unavailable, the squad put in a heroic defensive effort before eventually succumbing to the home side in a bruising encounter by 24pts to 15pts. The club awarded promising youngster Johnathan ‘gilly’ Gill his debut, and he showed enough promise to suggest he will get further outings at this level, contributing in both attack and defence. Despite a slow start, Stocksbridge held their discipline, along with their gameplan which clearly frustrated the home team. Ryan Smith, Jordan ‘spud’ Fletcher and Ricky Rowett lead the way with some strong tackling. Scotty Bowskill was on target with a penalty as the half time arrived with the scoreline of Hornsea 12pts – Stocksbridge Rugby 3pts. Stocksbridge maintained their efforts in the 2nd half and gained rewards of tries by both lock forwards Beale and Fletcher, this kept the visitors in the hunt, . However, a harsh red card for alleged punching for prop Joe Smith, meant Stocksbridge had to play most of the 2nd half a man light. The number advantage told in the end as the home side eventually ran out 24pts to 15pts

winners, with the visitors a little frustrated that they could and perhaps should have earned more reward for their efforts in this match. There were plenty of positives for the club to take from this performance as the depth of the squad was examined, and a debut Man of the Match display from Jonathan Gill a highlight amongst a gutsy team showing. ‘a stoic performance’ was how new skipper Adam Roles-Middlehurst described it, adding ‘we lost little in terms of quality, despite a much changed squad this week. This means that there will be healthy competition for places going forward. That can only be a good thing for the club’. Stocksbridge Rugby will be looking to cement their 2nd place in the league when they entertain near rivals Mosborough RUFC at the weekend, with a kick off time of 2.30pm at Coal Pit Lane. All are welcome and entrance is free. With the Clubhouse now fully open Chairman Andy Bell said ‘it has been a tough time for all, but rugby is back and it’s great for players and spectators enjoying the action again at Coal Pit Lane’, he added ‘hopefully, we can put the past 18mths behind us and move on with a successful and enjoyable season on and off the pitch’. The Manchester Road clubhouse will be open after the clash on Saturday. Advertising in Works! Cup final win for Stocksbridge Backed by a good number of fans they wanted to finish a positive season on a high.

Grayson finishing with 3-19 and Hibbert 3-17. The score was 74-8, with the first havman as he finished unbeaten on 62 not out. ing one hand on the cup. The 1st finishing on 140-6 off their 40 overs. Andy Hibbert came back on and picked up With a score on the board the 1st XI knew the ninth wicket after a good catch a gully if they bowled to their strengths they would from son Joe Hibbert. However, it was Jack have a good chance of winning the cup.

Andy Hibbert won the toss and elected to bat first on what seemed a good pitch.

Captain Hibbert struck first, with the score 1-1 a great start all round.

Jack Newton looked to get off to a flyer as he hit a couple of early boundaries, however he was caught behind for 15. Fellow opener Matt Price used his experience and dug in.

Not to be out done by his bowling partner Jake Vickers struck with a lovely Yorker to remove the dangerous John O’Sullivan.

Stocksbridge 140-6 1st XI (M Price 62 no) De La Salle 93 all out (J Hibbert 3-17, L Grayson 3-19)

Stocksbridge 1st XI travelled to Hollinsend to take on De La Salle in the Brian Whinston Cup Final.

Andy Hirst was removed without troubling the score, this brought Ben Cherry to the crease with the score 18-2. Price and Cherry went to work on rebuilding the innings and the pair batted with patience and looked solid in defence. A good partnership of 59 was broken when Cherry was removed for 29. Price looked to continue to anchor and get up to a competitive total. A couple of quick wickets were lost in the middle which stop the 1st momentum. Chris Pickford and Harry Hurst made double figures but Price was the main

Newton who claimed the last wicket with his first ball to finish the innings and give the 1st XI the victory in the final. A great day all round and a great way to finish the season winning the cup.

De La Salle we’re 22-2 and needing a partnership. However, Stocksbridge continued to strangle and restrict De La Salle making things very hard for them with the ball and in the field. First change bowlers Liam Grayson and Joe Hibbert were on the money straight away and the pair of them backed each other from either end. De La Salle had no answer to Grayson’s variation and to Hibbert’s pace at the other end and the pair ripped through the middle order.

RUNNING: Julia claims first at Worrall Penistone runners both young and old were in action in various races over recent days. At the Worrall Festival Chase Julia Cobham was first lady back. The 4.5 mile race starts and finishes at Sycamore Park in Worrall taking in Onesmoor and Coumes Brook. Veteran Malcolm Rose continued his fine form with 2nd place in the men’s over60 age category at the Tholthorpe 10k. Malcolm’s time was his second fastest for the distance. John Broom completed his 450th parkrun at Sandall Park. John started his Parkun journey nine years ago and would have achieved the 450 milestone much sooner if it wasn’t for COVID-19. John’s wife Dawn, took park in the Vale of York Half Marathon and claimed first place in the ladies over55 category. Dawn’s time of 1-35-08 was also an age group club record.

Staying with the half marathon distance a number of Penistone runners took on the Great North Run in Newcastle. First man back for Penistone was Gareth Irvine in 1-2441 and first lady back was Isobel McGuinness in 2-26-16. Andrew Heppenstall had a strong run to finish second at the Shepley 10k in a time of 3752. At the same race Julia Johnson claimed first place in the ladies over55 category in 4743. Julia also managed to claim third overall. In the latest round of the English junior fell championships there was a podium place for Graihagh Turner in the girls under15 event in a time of 26-24. Hugh Mackie just missed out on the podium coming 4th place in the boys under19 race. Hugh’s father Richard had a great race to claim first place in the men’s over50 event in a time of 46-59.

Dragon's Summer Cup With less than a month to go, the Stocksbridge Dragons Summer Cup is reaching an exciting finale. Three players, Ian Batty, Mick Siddall and Noel Weaver, are neck and neck each with 45 points. There are four more rounds to go and all to play for. This week the Dragons competed for the September Medal with Alan Flack (27) winning with a net 62 and a clear three shot margin. Mick Bellamy (21) was second with a net 65, closely followed by Bob Mason (19) with a net 66.

The Gents Section competed in the Club September Monthly Medal on 11 September. The weather was warm and dry, accepting there was a strong breeze from the west, but the course again looked in immaculate condition. Julian Wilkinson

(22) triumphed with a net 63, a steady round that will no doubt bring his handicap down. There were three players who carded net 65s, but on countback Trevor Mosely (10) took second place. He was followed by John Slodyczak (10) and Steven Haigh (14) respectively.

The Gents also competed in two stableford competitions over the past week. Firstly, on 9 September, Ben Stringer (3) won the mid-week competition with a dominant 41 points, a round that included 4 birdies and a gross score of 1 under par. Nigel Eggenton (10) was second with 39 points and Phil Beaumont (26) was third with 37 points. On Sunday 12 September John Slodyczak (10) continued his good weekend of form

and won the competition with an excellent 40 points. Steve Cunningham (23) was second with 38 points. Matt Sedgwick (7) was third with 38 points as well, but lost out to Steve on countback. The Ladies competed for the Veterans Brassie on Sunday 12 September. Elaine Guest (29) won with a stableford score of 36 points, playing steady and consistent golf for the whole of her round. Hilja O'Sullivan (23) was second with 35 points and maybe could have pushed Elaine for the victory had she not failed to score on the 18th hole. Ann Whitfield (26) was third with 30 points. The Ladies Back 9 competition on 10 September was won by Bev Sykes (12) with 18 points. Sue Clegg (22) was second with 17 points.

PERFECT START FOR NEW ERA Stocksbridge Park Steels 2-0 Bridlington Town Ian Richards had a perfect start as Stocksbridge Park Steels manager after they beat Bridlington Town 2-0. The scoring was opened when Lewis Whitham curled in after a fantastic attacking move. Luke Mangham doubled the lead in the second half when he volleyed in a pin-point cross from Michael Trench. After a fairly dull start, Bridlington almost made it a nightmare start for Richards. Andrew Norfolk was given all the space and time he could have ever wanted on the left wing and duly picked his man out with his cross. That man was Lewis Dennison and even though he was about two yards out, he headed into the side netting. Daniel Earl also headed over from a lofted cross. In the last game, Luke Mangham scored twice to down Yorkshire Amateur. Back on form, he wanted to add to that tally. At first it appeared he had a great chance when he was played clear, but his touch took him too wide and he could only shoot into the side

netting. Not long after, Mangham came closer when Whitham played it to him on the edge of the box but Hitchcock comfortably saved. While there was the odd scare from Bridlington, notably when Earl went clear only for Elliott Walker to outpace him and tackle him to stop any threat of a goal, the Steels were in charge. They would have their dominance pay off on the 33rd minute. It was a great move started by Jordan Lemon who found Nathaniel Crofts on the left with a great ball. Crofts cut it back for Michael Trench whose cross was not dealt with. Whitham gathered the ball and curled it in to give Stocksbridge the lead. Stocksbridge looked to get a second before half time. Whitham almost had a second when he fizzed a shot right across the face of goal. Unfortunately, it went wide after no one got a deciding touch on it. Trench also had a free kick but he hit it against the wall and Stocksbridge would

sure Ian Richards won his first game as Stocksbridge manager.

The second half started off on a bad note. Walker suffered a clash of heads and was down for some time before he was forced to be stretchered off, with the crowd giving a big round of applause as he was taken back to the dressing room.

A clean sheet was kept though when Hall, who had not had much to do for the first 80 minutes, ended up on top when he dueled with Bridlington manager Brett Agnew. Twice, Agnew had close range chances which most fans had accepted were going to go in. Twice, Hall pulled off blinding reflex saves which made sure Bridlington’s total stayed as a zero. This would seal the game for Stocksbridge and made

Ian Richards said “Great to see all the players giving everything for one another. The players have won this game today, and deserve all the credit. They are positive and have accepted the new management.”

Bridlington would soon learn the harsh lesson that if you don’t score, you’ll soon be punished. And that’s what happened. Trench put in a fantastic cross which Mangham volleyed
