BOOSTER JABS NEW POLICE ‘RECRUITS’ TO BE OFFERED A statement has been made by Deputy Leader of Sheffield City Council, Councillor Julie Grocutt in relation to Covid-19 booster jabs. Councillor Julie Grocutt said, "It’s really welcome news that boosters are to be delivered – vaccination is our best way of protecting ourselves and others from coronavirus, which is still a real threat. We’re encouraging everyone who can to get the vaccine, whether it’s the booster, or your first or second dose. "The vaccine rollout in Sheffield has been hugely successful so far and partners across the city have been working tirelessly. That work isn’t over, there are still people who are not vaccinated at all. "We know that frontline clinical staff are absolutely exhausted, that the NHS is under real pressure already, and that they are facing one of the most challenging winters in their history.

"Those workers who have put their all into supporting the fight against covid now need proper support from the government – clear and timely information on the booster rollout, implementation plans, and funding. Major announcements like this can’t be dropped on them at the last minute, they need to be able to prepare, for the wellbeing of clinical staff and for our communities. "We are still in a major pandemic and staff are being asked to provide one of the biggest mobilisations in NHS history. We want to thank all those in Sheffield who have been working on the response to Covid-19 – medics, care workers, key workers and vital voluntary and community groups. We also want to thank residents who have continued to be mindful of others and take precautions to help stop the spread of coronavirus. Your actions are PCSO Yates from the local Police team launched the Mini Police at Green Gate Lane Academy, High Green last week, where the children were sworn in to the force. saving lives." ‘Panda Pushers’ raise more than £1,500
The Walkley and Hillsborough policing team raised more than £1,500 for two Sheffield causes last Sunday (12 September), after pushing an old panda car for charity. Two men from High Green have raised money for a mental health charity after losing ‘loved ones’ to suicide.
Sergeant Simon Kirkham, Pc Sarah Forsythe, Pc Max Jackson, Pc Ben Howell, Pc Laura Thompson, Pc Alison Hoyle, Pc Jason Boothby, PCSO Jeanette Sparkes and PCSO Clare Stafford spent their Sunday pushing a 1960s police car round a 500m race track. The team managed 40 laps of a 500m race track at Owlerton Stadium. The team have so far raised more than £1,500; with two thirds of the money being donated to the Bears of Sheffield and Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity, and the rest going to the National Emergency Services Museum – who kindly loaned us the car!
Paul Royles lost his son in March 2019 and Marvyn Sayles lost his brother earlier this year.
Sergeant Kirkham said: “Thankyou everyone for your support and best wishes. It wasn't easy but the team managed to get 40 laps completed under 4.5 hours. A fantastic effort for fantastic causes.
They recently had a golf weekend away and raised £700 for local charity STRONG MINDS TOGETHER based at St. George’s football hub Pack Horse Lane in High Green.
“We will make arrangements next week to hand over the funds to Sheffield Children's Hospital and Emergency Services museum. A big thankyou to the Stadium and Museum for supporting us – and the burger and drinks team, which we were incredibly grateful for on the day.
The two, decided to have a day away, where they raised the money in Liverpool with Yew Tree Golf Society.
“There are some really generous and kind-hearted people out there, and the day was so much fun!”
Paul Royles said “This is something very close to our hearts and we wanted to donate to a local charity.”

IT’S OK TO TALK
Worrall Celebrating Well Restoration
On Saturday 25th September Penistone Church reserves will be playing Stocksbridge Park Steels reserves. Both teams have agreed to wear custom designed kits which have been generously funded by local businesses Vision Fit and Building Energy Control. These kits had been intended to be show cased at the annual charity event " Collins Cup Festival" but like many the charity has been affected by Covid and this event has been cancelled on numerous occasions. The idea behind Saturday is get the message across to people that "it's ok to talk". The kits have #talk above the squad number. Charity Organiser Lee Shepherd told Look Local “I believe grass-roots football is a place where people go to escape their day-to-day problems. I for one always felt the weight was off my shoulder when playing football. I will be present on the day to hand out some information on our upcoming events. I will be selling raffle tickets and also have a Signed MUFC shirt up for grabs. I will also be part of the panel on Penistone FM on Saturday morning 9-10 am to talk about what we are trying to achieve. I would like to thank Penistone and Stocksbridge for helping out with what we are trying to achieve, both clubs have been fantastic.” The shirts will be worn on Saturday 25th September Penistone Church reserves v Stocksbridge Park Steels reserves, 3pm KO. Any local businesses wishing to help in any way or donate please contact Lee Shephard Lee.shepherd85@outlook. com.

This coming Sunday, 26th September, at 5pm members of the local Environmental Group invite you to join them for a short gathering to mark the completion of the work restoring an historic site: a well and washing trough. The prompt for action was when heavy rainfall flooded and made a well-used footpath impassable below the trough. Over the last couple of years, the Group have been planning, fund raising, then working to clean up this centuries old site which had become dilapidated and polluted. Thanks to
Bradfield Parish Council and financial support from the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership the job is done. If you are in the Worrall area on Sunday afternoon you are invited to go along, see the restoration and witness the unveiling of an information board. The short open-air gathering is on a public footpath which runs from the top of Walshaw Road to Boggard Lane close to Asplands. There is parking by Sycamore Park and a path alongside 82 Towngate Road leads to the well.

COLLEGE STUDENTS IMMERSE THEMSELVES IN VIRTUAL REALITY Barnsley College Childcare and Education Professions students have had the opportunity to take part in Virtual Reality (VR) sessions as part of their induction to College. Sarah Rawson, Course Leader for Level 3 Childcare and Education Professions and T Levels, was keen to make the students’ induction period as memorable as possible whilst preparing them for their studies in a fun and engaging way. Students took part in a carousel of activities which were designed to support their employability, communication, teamwork and problem solv-
ing skills. The key principals of the sessions were to highlight the resilience and innovative attributes each student has. Activities included creating a ‘magical’ cube online which allowed objects to come to life. This encouraged students to discuss how similar actions could be used in a classroom to support curiosity in children. The VR sets were also very popular among the students as they allowed them to explore a nursery environment, providing them with vital insight to their placement later in the academic year. Students also had the chance to use an Oculus Rift, an en-
tirely immersive VR experience which allowed students to experience the sights and sounds of a variety of situations from what a baby experiences in the womb to how the world looks to a child as their sight develops. Sarah said: “I really wanted students to have fun and explore their curiosity during the induction period of their studies. I organised the carousel of activities with the view of developing students’ knowledge, skills and behaviours which have been identified to support them in the workplace.
Rachel James, Director of Teaching and Learning at Barnsley College, added: “As we start the new academic year, this is the latest investment by Barnsley College in digital technology for students and staff, ensuring learners are accessing the best equipment to enhance their studies and experience new ways of learning and working. To find out more about studying a course, visit www.barnsley.ac.uk, email info@barnsley. ac.uk or call 01226 216 123.

RIES TOLD AT FESTIVAL IN STANNINGTON
minutes past two on Saturday 18th September, StanFestival began in the Rose Garden at Stannington
ories of Stonehenge told by Phil Warhurst, David Wragg, Ken Hutton and Bob Mynors in the first part, torrshenge, a series of sculptures by Stoneface in the ery at Storrs Wood, told by Carmel Page in the sec-
d final part, audience members joined in and, using a dboard boxes collected in the preceding weeks, built far from accurate replica of the famous monument. nvolved had great fun.
The event ended at about five o'clock and Stannhenge was demolished. Then, by about a quarter to six, thanks to the energy and the diligence of the clean-up team, there was no evidence that anything had happened that day in the Rose Garden. Later though, the moon that rose over Stannington had a beautiful and warm orange glow, as if to show its appreciation for what had happened during the day. Stannington Story Festival is an annual event that marks the anniversary of volunteers assuming management responsibility for Stannington Library in 2014. It has happened every year since, except in 2020

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Your Letters ‘Anti-GP’ media rhetoric risks fuelling climate of abuse
Reviewing existing Dementia Activity
In response to the campaign launched today by the Daily Mail about face-to-face appointments with GPs in England.
Provide a Dementia Activity
“The Daily Mail’s campaign and other similar ‘anti-GP’ rhetoric in the media risks fuelling a climate of spiralling abuse, leading to more incidents such as the appalling attack on staff at a surgery in Manchester last week. It is damaging to both doctors and their patients and serves no real purpose other than to give backing to the growing trend of abuse, vitriol and violence that is being directed towards our healthcare workers. “GPs are seeing millions of their patients face-to-face, as well as offering telephone and online appointments, every week. The move to an initial telephone consultation to assess a patient’s needs was, and is, in line with NHS England’s and the Government’s guidance and is still necessary for infection control and to keep patients and healthcare staff as safe as possible. No one wants to leave a surgery with an infection they did not attend with. Many patients have really appreciated the benefit of alternative types of consultations, which can then be followed by a faceto-face appointment if needs be; to focus on simplistic percentages completely misses the point and for the media to suggest face-toface consultations have not been happening or need to ‘begin again’ is clearly wrong. This misinformation is creating a dangerous breeding ground for discontent. Staff being harassed and slandered on social media, being subjected to verbal abuse, intimidation and physical attacks cannot and should not be allowed to happen. “Sections of media which insist on peddling these dangerous untruths risk inciting even greater levels of violence and abuse towards healthcare staff, when in fact their effort should be directed towards asking the Government why it is standing by and allowing this country to have a GP service that is under-funded and now, under attack.” BMA’s GP committee Dr Richard Vautrey

What can you do about your carbon footprint? The average Briton sends around 6.5 tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere each year (world average is 1.4 tonnes). It takes about 1000 young trees to absorb that carbon- or 3 acres (1.5 football pitches) of forest. Last week our local climate change group (Upper Don Renewable Energy) visited the Eco House at Heeley City Farm. We learnt about the range of products on offer to insulate and improve our homes, from heat pumps, triple glazing, internal and external cladding, photovoltaic panels to draught excluders. They also hold a list of recommended installers. They and the Green Doctors are able to give people independent advice about what they can buy or do in their situation as well as home visits and advice with energy bills. Following on from that, UDRE invited you to visit three local homes, whose occupants are working towards cutting their carbon footprints (and their bills) by reducing, reusing and recycling, and making themselves more self-sufficient in the process. Generating their own electricity has pushed them to using it far more carefully, in a more targeted way (eg only putting on the washing machine when the panels are generating electricity!). The new pv panels are far more efficient than their predecessors and the smart technology that enables appliances to talk to each other is now coming on stream. Battery storage is critical. Despite official battery storage still being quite pricy, companies are reconditioning used electric vehicle and fork-lift truck batteries for sale or rent. Growing your own food, or at least going some way towards that goal, is an integrated part of this process. Good compost heaps and rain-water collection will lead to cutting your carbon. We discussed only buying clothes when needed and passing on the old ones.

Your Letters one can do something, look at where you’re losing heat which you’re paying for, talk to somebody who knows what they’re talking about and do something about it. There are government grants available too- and more coming in the pipeline. Some of the things to do could cost next to nothing-eg if you have a hot-water cylinder that came pre-insulated, look at it again, feel the hot water outlet and lag that. Many thanks to Willy, Tim and Ann for sharing their passion, thanks to Stocksbridge Leisure Centre for providing lunch and to everyone who turned up wanting to learn more. Our next Green Homes visit is in the Penistone area on Saturday 16th October. Contact us if you want to come. Our Schools Challenge is underway in the Stocksbridge and Penistone areas-lets see what the youngsters can teach us. Two days before that, on Thursday 14th October we have a meeting for anyone interested in home efficiency and renewables. This event will help share knowledge about improvements that can be made to homes by learning from community projects elsewhere. We’re meeting at Penistone Leisure Centre at 7pm. In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window.

Local Sport CHURCH FIND WIN IN TURBULENT WEEK Penistone Church 4-0 Thackley
A report by Martin Webb
A beautiful afternoon for football greeted SteScorers for Church – Nathan Keightley 3, phen Lenthall’s debut as Church's first team manager. He is Church's third manager in Luke Stewart 18, 53, Tom Brennan 31 two weeks, taking over from Brett Lovell, who made the difficult decision to stand down due to family commitments. Church had also lost three players in the last week, so these had been turbulent times for the club. After 3 minutes Nathan Keightley took a well struck shot from 20 yards out that flew into the right side of the goal.

After 18 minutes Nathan Keightley set Luke Stewart free on the half way line. He took the ball at full pace in on goal, a sway sent the goalie the wrong way and Luke finished low and hard to the right of goal. 31 minutes a corner to the right found Ash Ellis on the far post. Tom Brennan converted the nod back with a header low to the middle of goal. 53 minutes Church exploited space down the right, but Cameron Simpson could not get to the cross on the far post. Jordan Coduri collected the ball and played a neat cross in. The ball fell to Elliott Firth whose dinked cross was met in the middle of goal by Luke Stewart with a powerful header. Luke Stewart almost scored his hat trick goal with a looping header at the far post. The goalie saved at the last moment in the top corner. Church managed the end of the game well, snuffing out Thackley chances. This was a spirited Church performance and they took the chances that in previous games had evaded them. Thackley are a good side so this made the victory even more significant. A wonderful start for Steven Lenthall and his new team.
Close to 100 members took part in this year's competition, with Richard Hastings (13) winning with a score of 41 points. Richard's round

Basic errors costly Stocksbridge RUFC 8 -33 Mosborough
Globe Travel sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby produced a ‘Jeckyll and Hyde’ performance on Saturday, before slipping to their 2nd defeat of the Yorkshire Four South East campaign at home to Mosborough Rugby, eventually going down by 33pts to 8pts. With just about a first choice starting line-up and a strong bench to back up, there were welcome returns for hard working back rower Aspin, livewire scrum half Frith, the talented boiler house man Whittaker and explosive centre Ben Tyers, and the home side quickly established a foothold in the Mosborough 20. On a beautiful sunny day at Coal Pit Lane, playing with the slight slope and breeze, in front of a sizeable home crowd, the ‘Bridge heaped pressure on the visitors’ defence, who to their credit, held firm. A disappointing result for the ‘Bridge but there are many positive signs of the set piece dominance and some flowing handling moves out behind, there will however, be an in-
quest on some of the defensive efforts which proved costly. The Bradfield Brewery Man of the Match award went to that man Adam Rothwell Frith who never stopped trying, with Beale, Woodcock and Ryan Smith amongst the pick of the bunch. Afterwards skipper Roles-Middlehurst said ‘ this was a disappointing result which was mostly of our own making, but we know where we can improve’, adding ‘the squad is strong and competition for places will ensure we fix things that
need fixing, we go again at the weekend’, Stocksbridge Rugby now drop to 4th in the league table but, will be hoping for an improvement in their fortunes when they visit lowly Stanley Rodillians on Saturday for their next clash in Yorkshire Four South East. The next home fixture at Coal Pit Lane will be on Saturday 16th October when Stocksbridge Rugby will entertain Rotherham Phoenix. Photo: Ian Revitt
Stocksbridge Golf Club
Manager Steve Lenthall “What can I say? What a win for us, four-nil, and every man was superb… I’m “proud as punch” of every single one of them today. Hopefully we can have a light training session on Wednesday, try and get the injuries right and get a full squad up for the trip to Bottesford next week and hopefully get the three points.”
Turner/ Hobson Shield draws a large field The Barry Turner/ Jamie Hobson Shield attracted a large field of competitors at Stocksbridge Golf Club on 18 September. The competition is one of the Club's newest competitions and was established in memory of longstanding member, Barry Hobson and distinguished Head Greenkeeper, Jamie Hobson, who both sadly passed away in 2018. The stableford competition is now part of the annual calendar and is open to Ladies and Gents members.

included 2 birdies on the front 9 and but for a no score on the 7th would have been even better. Terri Moffett (32), from the Ladies Section took second place with 39 points, pipping Rob Wakefield (25) into third place with the same score, but losing out on countback. Earlier in the week the Gents competed for the Mid-Week Stableford. Karl Harris (20) won with 39 points, starting his round with a birdie on the first hole. Liam O'Sullivan (3) was second with 38 points, a very steady round with 2 birdies and only 3 dropped shots. Warren Oliver (12) and Trevor Mosely (10) both scored 37 points, but Warren
took third place on countback. The Ladies Front 9 competition on 16 September was won by Elaine Guest (15) with 17 points. Elaine beat Bev Sykes (14), who had scored the same 17 points, into second place on countback. Sam Wood (27) was third with 16 points. The Ladies Past Captains competed for their annual trophy on 19 September. Hilja O'Sullivan (22) triumphed with 39 points. Helen Moffett (27) the current Captain, came second with 37 points and Bev Sykes (27) finished a good competitive weekend for herself in third place, with 36 points.

TIGERS TOPPLE LEADERS
NEW MANAGEMENT TEAM GET OFF TO WINNING START
but for an unwanted lift off the second bend in Heat 6 which allowed Panthers guest T h o m a s Jorgensen through.
SHEFFIELD blew the Premiership title race wide open with a stunning 51-39 win at Peterborough on Monday. Both sides have already qualified for the play-offs but the Panthers were widely fancied to win the meeting to secure top spot in the table and gain choice of opponents in the semi-finals. They may still do that as their last meeting is at home to bottom club King’s Lynn on Thursday, but the Tru Plant Tigers have added much intrigue to the mix whichever of Peterborough or current leaders Wolverhampton get that choice. It was a performance which showed exactly what Tigers are capable of, and why they could still challenge for the title in their first season of Premiership racing, as they took quick revenge for a 40-50 home defeat to the same opposition at Owlerton last Thursday. British Champion Adam Ellis was in terrific form with three race wins, and it would have been four
Me a nw h i l e No.1 Jack Holder was involved in two crucial 5-1s, and there were contributions right down the order in the perfect away display. Delighted boss Simon Stead said: “I just feel like we’ve not quite had the rub of the green for the last few meetings, injuries upset our balance, but we’ve come back fighting and really our season starts now. “It’s been so frustrating because I’ve felt like we’ve had the right people in, but we’ve just not all fired at the same time, and tonight has just proved what a force we can be when everything goes right. “We’ve ridden well, there’s talk that maybe we caught Peterborough on an off-night, but we’ve ridden well and the atmosphere in the team is really good. It’s set us up really well for Sunday and the important fixtures that are coming up.” Tigers will discover their play-off opponents after Thursday’s Peterborough/King’s Lynn fixture, and they wrap up their regular league campaign at home to the Stars on Sunday (5pm).

Ex Steel players Ian Richards and Andy Ring quickly settled into their new management roles with two wins from two games. After only taking over on the Thursday evening training session the first game was against Bridlington Town FC at the Eco-Power Stadium, a fine solid performance brought a two nil victory with goals from Lewis Whitham and Luke Mangham. The following Tuesday saw Tadcaster Albion FC visit the EcoPower and they provided a much tougher test ,enjoying lots of possession during the game, a good save from Steels keeper Ed Hall keeping the scores level at the break. A five minute spell in the second half saw the game change, Tadcaster had a player sent off and Steels introduced striker Joe Lumsden back from injury ,Joe punished Tadcaster for their Ill discipline with two well taken goals to give Stocksbridge three well earned points .
