sheffield swingers celebrate 10 years - page 09
Bin strike goes ahead Industrial action is set to continue every Monday until a new pay deal is agreed Bin workers have launched the first in a series of weekly strikes in a dispute over pay. Refuse staff in Sheffield, who have demanded a 3% "cost-of-living" increase, staged their first four-hour walkout from 6:30 GMT, Monday 7 November. The industrial action is set to continue every Monday until a new pay deal is agreed with waste management contractor Veolia. It said it would work to minimise disruption. Lee Parkinson, from the GMB union, said both sides were due to meet on Tuesday and he would consider anything put forward. "These guys, all they are asking for is a cost-ofliving pay rise that keeps pace with inflation over the next two years," he said. "I will work every day of the week to try and resolve this dispute."
Virtual Open Day
The strike was due to start earlier but was suspended at the end of October to allow workers to consider an improved offer from their employer. Veolia said it was "disappointed" the improved deal had been rejected by a ballot and apologised for the inconvenience it would cause. It said the action would affect up to 40,000 properties. "We continue to engage with our colleagues and GMB representatives and we are working to minimise any disruption to residents' recycling and waste services." Veolia was awarded the waste management contract from Sheffield City Council in 2001 as part of a 35-year deal. The council said extra collections were made on Saturday and advised affected residents to leave black bins out until they were collected.

Bid to save chapel I may be gone a while STANNINGTON GROUP’S PLEA TO SAVE LOCAL LANDMARK BUILDINGS
Action for Knowle Top, made up of a group of local Stannington people, are planning to buy the former Knowle Top Chapel and Schoolroom. They want to save and develop them for community activities.
Knowle Top Chapel has been a striking and much loved landmark in Stannington, Sheffield since 1879. It has been well used by the community by a range of local groups for concerts, rehearsal space, coffee mornings and local drama groups. The schoolroom is still used for a breakfast and after school club as well as a base for Stannington Brass Band. Joint Chair, Nicola Parris, said “We have a plan to raise the funds to purchase the buildings and manage them for the community. We are forming a community benefit society, planning a share issue and finalising our business plan. But we are a small group and urgently need more volunteers to organise fund raising and public engagement events. We are urging people to attend our public meeting as time is now of the essence”. Anyone interested can find out more at a public meeting on Wednesday 24th November at 7. 30 pm at Christ Church, Stannington S6 6DB or they can contact Action for Knowle Top https://www.facebook.com/KnowleTop knowletop@gmail.com

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window.

Repairs to valley footpath sinkhole in sight
A sinkhole which opened up along a popular Sheffield nature trail earlier this year should be repaired in the next couple of months, the council has said. The small hole opened up along a path at Hind Wheel in the Rivelin Valley and there was criticism when Sheffield Council put heavy duty fencing and warning signs around it, but didn’t carry out any repairs. The council now says it hopes work to fix the hole will start soon but it could be complex. A spokesman said: “The hole in the footpath has been caused by water leaking from the dam, therefore, before the hole is repaired, the water leak needs to be fixed. “We are currently making arrangements to employ a contractor to undertake this work and we hope this will commence by the end of the year. “We would ask that people take extra care and adhere to the on-site signs while these works are ongoing.” Rivelin Valley Conservation Group said people frustrated at being diverted around the hole had thrown the fencing into the river so they could pass.

Ponti’s serve up an evening of Meatloaf The team at Ponti’s Italian Kitchen at Fox Valley in north Sheffield are hosting a fantastic evening of high-quality entertainment from the talented Matt Shaw later this month. The performer’s famous Meatloaf tribute act has made him one of the region’s best loved entertainers and the evening promises well known hits including the powerful classics, Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad, Anything for Love and Bat Out of Hell. The performer shot to fame twenty years ago when he appeared on Stars in Their Eyes and become the youngest and highest scoring Meatloaf impersonator. The TV appearance launched a successful career which has seen Matt perform his sell out show across the globe, in large theatres and smaller, more intimate venues. His adrenaline pumping performance at Ponti’s will also include covers from his popular Anthems Show. With a great line up of some floor filling tunes from artists including George Ezra, Elton John and Bon Jovi it really does promise to be a night to remember. Matt will be performing his Meatloaf and Anthems Show at Ponti’s Italian Kitchen on Friday 26th November. Tickets are £50 each, including a welcome glass of prosecco and a delicious three course dinner.
Matt said: “I’m really looking forward to bringing our show to Ponti’s Italian Kitchen later this month with a great line up of classic Meatloaf as well as some great, wellloved anthems – there really is something for everyone. This is my first performance at Ponti’s, and it really is a fantastic location and venue.” Ponti’s has built up a reputation as a great local venue for high quality musical entertainment alongside its authentic Italian experience. Elvis and Dolly Parton are among the sell out tribute nights which have been given the Ponti’s touch this year – and now the team are looking forward to bringing their Meatloaf and Anthems experience to their stunning Fox Valley restaurant. Restaurant Manager Argys Myrtja said: “Matt’s performance is incredible, and we can’t wait to welcome him to Ponti’s later this month, we love our entertainment evenings and this one promises to be a really special night.” To book contact Argys on email at fv@pontis.co.uk or call 01142 887475. Railway vandals hunted by Police Police have stepped up patrols around a stretch of railway in Sheffield in a bid to deter vandals, who have left shopping trolleys, fence panels and ladders on the railway line.
Over recent months, anti-social behaviour, criminal damage and vandalism have increased on the line running through Ecclesfield. Officers from British Transport Police have dealt with a range of incidents from trespassing and stone throwing to more serious incidents where trains have hit large objects, including shopping trolleys, fence panels and ladders. In a bid to deter those responsible, officers have visited schools in the Ecclesfield area to deliver a stern message to youngsters and to warn them of the dangers of trespassing on the railway. Increased patrols are taking place in the area, with officers in plain clothes

also involved to try to identify the culprits. PC Darren Martin said: “Incidents of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage are a major concern. Placing items on the line and stone throwing are not trivial matters – someone could be seriously hurt and even cause a derailment apart from the disruption to journeys for hundreds of passengers. “The safety of passengers and rail staff is our priority which is why we are increasing resources in the area and anyone who is caught carrying out criminal damage will be brought before the courts.” PC Martin added: “The railway is not a playground – it is strictly out of bounds. I urge parents to check where their teenagers are and remind them of the dangers of hanging around near railway lines."

Two bulls shot dead by Police on M1 motorway Two escaped bulls have been shot dead by police after they caused a two-hour closure of the M1 in South Yorkshire. The animals got onto the carriageway between junction 35 and junction 34 after a car and trailer carrying them overturned, National Highways said. The crash happened within junction 34 at about 08:45 GMT, on Thursday 4 November. In a statement, South Yorkshire Police said: "As the bulls posed a danger to life and property, the decision sadly had to be taken to destroy them both." The force confirmed each bull was killed with a single shot. The last of the traffic caught in the area was released at about 10:50 GMT, according to National Highways. However, lane three of the southbound carriageway was still closed for "clean up", it added. The agency had earlier urged drivers to allow extra time on their journey, or to find an alternative route, due to high levels of congestion on the M1 in the area. Photo: National Highway

effield’s Lakeland Landscape On Wednesday 17 November, the Bolsterstone Archaeology and Heritage Group is hosting a talk by Alex Sotheran, archaeologist for the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership, who will be giving us an update on projects that have been going on in the area. Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership is one of many national landscape partnerships, funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund, with the vision of creating ‘a landscape for everyone to enjoy and feel part of, that is cherished, understood and valued now and in the future, where a resilient network of diverse habitats thrives alongside the area's living, productive landscape, rich heritage, vibrant communities and strong traditions’. The Partnership is being managed by the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, and funding covers the period January 2019 up to March 2023. The area involved in the Landscape Partnership extends along the top
of Hunshelf Bank up to Langsett reservoir, south all the way down the moors to Redmires reservoirs and the Rivelin valley, and up the east side by Oughtibridge and Deepcar. With so many reservoirs, bus tours in the 1950s brought tourists to visit the area, hence the title.

The Partnership involves a wide range of projects, many of which relate to nature reserves, wildlife, water and woodland, as well as a group of projects under the heading Hidden History. A key aspect is the involvement of local communities, working with children and isolated people – benefits for all concerned. So come along and hear what is going on around the area. The talk will be at 7.30pm on Wednesday 17 November, in the meeting room at Christ Church on Manchester Road in Stocksbridge. There will be refreshments. All are welcome.

Your Letters Manchester Road Shopping Area M1 Smart Motorway I would like to thank everyone in the area who took time to come to the consultation events around the Towns Fund project. It was great to meet so many people and listen to their views and feedback. It was also an opportunity for many people to raise issues in relation to other matters around the ward that concern them. Having also held my first in person surgery for sometime last week, I also received lots of information about matters that are on-going in and around the ward. Many people raised parking on Manchester Road.

I wonder whether Ms Cates now regrets her vote in the light of the government’s U-turn and Mr Paterson’s resignation? The government is still seeking to reform the rules on standards, however, and it seems likely that this is to find more favourable outcomes for investigations into the Prime Minister’s financial dealings. Let’s hope that more MPs find the moral courage to vote with their conscience next time. Yours sincerely, Liz Bishop Millhouse Green

New boxes a hit with bats Working together with partners from the South Yorkshire Bat Group and Yorkshire Water, the Sheffield Lakeland team from Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, put up 60 new bat boxes earlier in the year and they’re already proving to be a big hit.
A recent survey discovered six of the boxes are already being used by roosting bats, which was more than had been expected that early in the year. But the most exciting news however, was that four different species of bat were recorded during the survey. This is just one of the projects being delivered by the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Project, supported by the players of the National Lottery. This was the first time that bats had been found in the new boxes during the monthly checks, and it was a great surprise to find them being used by so many different species so soon after being put up. It is hoped that the boxes continue to be popular with bats in the area, and that this success can be replicated in other areas within the Sheffield Lakeland area. The species recorded so far are common pipistrelle, soprano pipistrelle, brown long-eared bat and whiskered bat, but it is hoped that more species will be recorded in greater numbers once winter begins and the bats start to look for suitable places to hibernate. Greg Slack from SYBG said “I really wasn't expecting to get anything other than pipistrelles this early and I thought that initially we'd get one or two bats in one bat box! It's great to get use of the boxes within a year and even better to get such good use by different species so early on!”
There’s also a research element to this project and SYBG are trialling boxes made of a new material. The different box size, box positioning, and even the species of tree that the boxes are put up on is being carefully determined and recorded. The information that will then be collected will help us understand bat preferences and whether these vary between the different species. It may take some time to gather enough data to get a clear picture, but it is hoped that the results will help shape bat conservation work in future. The Sheffield Lakeland team have been working closely with SYBG and Yorkshire Water around their Underbank Reservoir and Brooks Bank Farm to improve habitats for bats, although SYBG are active all around the Sheffield area. There are eighteen species of bat native to the UK, but they’re not often easy to spot as they’re nocturnal and hibernate during the winter months. The smallest UK species of bats are the pipistrelles, with a wingspan of between 22-25cm and the largest are the noctule and greater horseshoe bats which have a wingspan of around 38cm. Their diet is made up of insects, which they catch whilst in flight using echo-location. As a group, bats are the only mammals capable of controlled flight and their wings are actually membranes stretched between adapted finger bones in their front limbs. Their hind limbs meanwhile, are adapted for perching and they roost upside-down.

One year on from launching the new T Level qualifications, Barnsley College has stepped up its commitment to these new industry-focused courses. The College currently offers T Levels in Construction; Digital; Education and Childcare; and Health and, from September 2022, students will also be able to choose from even more subjects including Engineering and Manufacturing and Finance and Accounting. Barnsley College was the first South Yorkshire college to offer the pioneering new qualifications and now has a cohort of students who’ve completed their first year and have progressed onto their second year
of study. Both College’s Digital and Education and Childcare groups reported 100% completion in the first year. Equivalent to three A Levels, T Levels have been designed in collaboration with leading employers to provide the skills that businesses across the region need. The subject areas on offer at Barnsley College also reflect some of the top local business growth areas. T Levels are unique as they combine classroom study with industry placements so young people gain valuable work experience in their chosen sector. Many local businesses are embracing T Levels as a great way to bring in new ideas, the latest
skills and as a new way to find, nurture and secure young talent. John Lack, Construction T Level student at Barnsley College, said: “Whilst some of the course is classroombased I get loads of opportunities to be handson which I really enjoy! By studying this T Level I’ve now got the freedom to choose between a higher apprenticeship, university or going into the workplace after completion.” To find out more about T Levels, visit our Open Day on Thursday 2 December from 4.00pm to 7.00pm. Alternatively, you can visit www.barnsley.ac.uk/t-levels, call 01226 216 123 or email info@barnsley.ac.uk for more information.

Andrew Pearson and Malcolm Rose have both been selected to run for the England Master’s team after excellent performances at the qualification event at the Leeds Abbey Dash 10k two weeks ago. The two will ‘don’ an England vest at a 10k in Bristol in 2022. James Mumford was a prize winner at the Guy Fawkes 10 mile road race claiming 3rd place in the men’s over40 category. He placed 13th overall in a time of 1-01-52. At the same race Martin Ball placed 4th in the over50 men’s category and Keith Gordon claimed the same position in the men’s over70 category. Penistone had a successful showing at the Cop Hill Fell race over in Meltham. Prize winners were Damian Kilpin (first over40 man), Becky Timms (first over40 lady), Dan Limb (second over40 man), Jude Taylor (2nd over40 lady). Other prize winners included Steve Dickinson and Alan Knox. The second fixture in the South Yorkshire cross country league took place at Penistone and local Penistone runners fared well in some very tough conditions. There were top ten finishes for Josie Charlesworth (8th under11 girls), Finn Pepper (4th under11 boys), Alexander Wright (7th under11 boys), Flynn Rogers (10th under13 boys), Nichola McNally (4th over45 lady), Becky Timms (9th over35 lady), Barbara Haigh (1st over75 lady), Kai Sunman (5th Senior men), James Fryers (7th under20 men), Keith Gordon (2nd over70 men), Stu Smith (8th over65 men), Nick Wittingham (10th over65 men) and Ray Brown (2nd over75 men). Sarah Clough managed to complete her 50th parkrun at Poolsbrook finishing in a time of 31-16.

Chapeltown exit cup Former junior Chapeltown RBL 3-4 Joker Wickersley Chapeltown RBL were knocked out of the league cup just before the quarter finals, following a last minute goal. Legion took the lead when Morgan Cowell played through the in form Denham Saxton who found the bottom corner confidently. Joker equalised after they were awarded a penalty when Tom Duty was judged to have brought down his man. Two good finishes for Premier League Joker took them 3-1 up at the break. Legion began their comeback when Harley Wilson was brought down in the box shortly after the restart and picked himself up to send the goalkeeper the wrong way. Wilson then grabbed a second after a pass from Saxton, hitting a true strike in to the bottom corner.
leaves Steels
Lewis Whitham has left Stocksbridge Park Steels and has signed for NPL East rivals Liversedge. Whitham is a product of the Stocksbridge Juniors and his breakthrough into the first team has been a point of pride for the club. He has appeared seventeen times this season, the joint most out of anyone, and has scored five goals in all competitions. Stocksbridge manager Ian Richards said: “We wish Lewis all the very best at Liversedge, he felt it was too good an offer and opportunity to turn down. In the short time we have been at the club we have seen the quality and potential that he possesses. He goes with our best wishes and knows he is welcome to return if the move doesn’t quite work out.” Liversedge are unbeaten and sit at the top of the NPL East division.
Valley Hill Runners Local running group Valley Hill Runners were out and about this weekend.
Well done to all members who were out running.

Ladies in the Winter Foursomes The Dragons section started its Winter Cup competition on 27 October. Scoring was very difficult and Frank Milnes (21) won the first round with 34 points. Doug Needham (22) and Bill Boucher (27) finished second and third respectively, also with 34 points, but losing out to Frank on countback. The second round took place on 3 November with Les Wright (14) winning with 36 points. Alan Flack (26) matched Les' stableford score, but lost out on countback. Charlie Dale (24) and Dave Jones (15) both had 34 points, but Charlie took third place on countback.
Ladies Captain at Stocksbridge Golf Club, Helen Moffett, led three pairs at the Sheffield and District Ladies Golf Union Winter Foursomes on 29 October at the Phoenix Golf Club in Rotherham. In difficult weather conditions scoring was always going to be difficult and the format of alternative shots made it even more difficult. All the more credit then, should go to Sue Hill and Sam Wood who came a creditable third in a field of 22 pairs. Their 35 points was only 1 point behind a Crookhill pairing that won with 36 points. Ladies Captain, Helen, is pictured (second left) with Heather Evans, Sue Hill, Sam Wood, Terri Moffett and Alison Sedgwick. The wet weather has affected the numbers competing at the Golf Club over the last couple of weeks. The Gents Winter Cup Round 4, was won by Ash Howe (6) with a highly creditable 38 points in some very wet and
windy conditions on 30 October. Ash's gross score was only 4 over par and his round included 2 birdies. Phil Beaumont (23), Glynn Stainforth (19) and Paul Blake (8) all finished with 36 points, but Phil took second place on countback, with Glynn 3rd and Paul 4th. Paul Blake's round was enhanced with an eagle 2 on the long par four 11th hole and was accompanied by him doing a brief celebratory dance. Pete Westhead (10), who finished 5th with 35 points, also achieved an excellent eagle on the even more challenging par four 15th. Round 5 of the Gents Winter Cup took place on 6 November and Paul Cleary (25) won with 39 points. Dave Stringer (15) was second with 38 points and Malcolm Ingles (18) came in third with 37 points. Craig Brailsford (16), who finished 11th overall, had a moment of glory on the long par 4 3rd, with an eagle 2.
A small field competed for the Gents Thursday Stableford on 28 October, with Kel Meegan (21) winning by a convincing margin with 39 points. Kel's form was particularly strong on the front 9 with birdies on the 3rd and 8th holes. Steve Bloomer (20) was second with 35 points and Dave Buxton (10) third with 34 points. Liam O'Sullivan (4) also scored 34 points but lost out to Dave on countback. The Pearsons, Margaret and Alf, played the final of the Club's Tetley Cup against Liana O'Sullivan and Richard Grimmer. In the match-play format, the game was very close for 17 holes, with Margaret and Alf 1 up, with one hole to play. But the Pearson's hung on to halve the 18th and win the match. Finally, the Club hosted its annual Charity Auction night on 30 October. The event is normally held in the summer, but Covid restrictions resulted in a delay. On the evening the clubhouse was full with members digging

Rugby face big test After a week off due to the Autumn Inter-
national fixtures, Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby face a test of their credentials when they travel to North Derbyshire to face 4th placed Mosborough RUFC on Saturday. Although Mosborough were victorious at Coal Pit Lane earlier this season, 5th placed Stocksbridge will travel with confidence after their resounding win against the table toppers Hornsea last time out. The break has given some members of the squad time to recover from knocks, Reece ‘diesel’ Aspin is fit again after a broken nose, & burly prop forward Gary Woodcock has recovered from a minor ankle injury, with fellow front rower Ricky James likely to recover from a knock to his knee sustained during the impressive win over Hornsea. Utility back Tom Kerr is also back in contact training after a shoulder problem. Long term injury victims Ryan Smith (knee) & Sammy Whitaker (lower leg) are also steadily improving. Whitaker is out of his orthopaedic boot, & is hoping to return to light training before the end of the Month, whilst Smith may be out until nearer Christmas. Meanwhile Clock Tower Andy Beal has won the Man of Steel award for the Month of October, after a string of consistent performances. Rowett, that man Frith & Aspin were also in contention. Beal is kindly sponsored by Mr M Gribbins. Stocksbridge Rugby are also celebrating the 32nd anniversary of the opening of their Manchester Road clubhouse, when many members put in many hours of toil & labour to build the Club’s HQ. Club Captain Adam Roles-Middlehurst is looking forward to locking horns with Mosborough again this weekend, ‘we owe them one, & our improvement since our previous game against them means that we will travel with confidence’ he said, before adding ‘we are aware we will need to be at or near our best, but we are very capable of getting the result we want’. The kick off at Mosborough is at the new time of 2.15pm.

Hebburn Town 1-5 Stocksbridge PS
Stocksbridge Park Steels had, arguably, their best performance of the season as they beat FA Vase winners Hebburn Town 5-1.
free. He duly finished and the Steels were looking good in this game. This was when Stocksbridge took good control of the match and looked to make this a rout. Sam Finlaw was able to evade numerous challenges before fizzing a shot over. It was his midfield partner who would get the plaudits though. Ruthven was able to control and pass the ball along to Ross Goodwin who hit an incredible effort right into the top corner. Hunter was left helpless in the Hebburn goal, though he’d have likely ‘lost his hand’ if he got a touch onto it.
Stocksbridge got the lead early on when Josh Nodder made the most of a defensive mistake. Mangham doubled the lead through some good play and Ross Goodwin scored a goal of the season contender to make it three. Goodwin had a clearance bounce off his head and then it was five with another smart finish from Mangham. Lee Cooksey scored an own goal to give Hebburn a consolation. Stocksbridge started in great fashion much like they did in the last match against Rossington Main. Scott Ruthven’s cross was not properly cleared by Hebburn and Nodder was able to get onto it, control and then volley in to give the Steels the lead.
Stocksbridge looked more likely to get a fourth than Hebburn get one back before the end of the second half. Mangham almost connected with a bicycle kick that would have certainly captured the imagination while Hunter was able to save impressively when the striker went clear on goal towards the end of the half. Despite this, it looked good for Stocksbridge as they had a 3-0 lead going into half time.
While Hebburn looked dangerous, Stocksbridge had the better chances and almost made it two. Nodder went clear and was looking to get his second. His shot beat Kieran Hunter in the Hornets goal but it also beat the post too.
Steels got off to the best possible start in the second off, though it was very lucky. Hunter went to clear the ball but he didn’t spot an onrushing Goodwin. Hunter’s clearance would then smash off Goodwin’s face and head into the back of the net.
Stocksbridge did get a second though not long after. Nodder and Mangham played the ball between them very well and this sent the Steels’ leading scorer
)6(&
Stocksbridge didn’t have to wait long for their fifth. Mangham battled to beat a defender to a headed down ball by Nodder and just like his first goal he burst through to finish and put the game beyond doubt. Hebburn did get one back though, when a shot was well saved by Hall but the ball would bounce back off debutant Cooksey and into the back of the net. Next HOME game: FRICKLEY 3pm KO Saturday 13 Nov. Free entry for veterans and military
Steels are offering Veterans and serving Military personnel FREE entry to the ground as guests of the Football Club, the NPL outfit will show their respect for those that have given the freedom we enjoy today Chairman Graham Furness told Look Local “If you wish to attend serving military personnel we ask you please wear a uniform, and Veterans your vets card or medals and cap We are expecting a few people to take up the offer so please arrive in plenty of time before Kick Off, we will be laying poppy reefs and Charlotte Bailey will play the last post”
