Blitz survivor set to host event The 80th anniversary of two of the darkest nights in city’s history is set to be commemorated next month. The Sheffield Blitz killed and wounded over 2,000 people in December 1940 and made nearly a tenth of the city’s population homeless. The devastating attacks changed the face of the city forever and flattened much of the city centre. Sheffield Cathedral – the venue for the nine-hour long event – miraculously survived. The event is set to include the screening of a rare Sheffield Blitz film; remembrance service; exhibition; World War Two re-enactors and display of vintage military vehicles and memorabilia and the launch of the 10th anniversary edition of ‘Sheffield’s Date With Hitler’ – the book that was turned into BBC documentary ‘Sheffield – The Forgotten Blitz’. The event is set to take place on Thursday, December 9th, from 12 noon until 9pm, and is being organised by Sheffield Cathedral, the National

Emergency Services Museum, Sheffield’s Date With Hitler author Neil Anderson and Richard Godley, project manager for Sheffield Blitz 75th.

nights. Much of The Moor, High Street, Castle Market and the Devonshire Street area was destroyed along with great swathes of the suburbs.

Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “The Sheffield Blitz changed the face of the city in December 1940 and it’s important that we mark this significant anniversary. So much of the city was destroyed, many local people lost everything but the spirit and unity of Sheffielders shone through and everyone came together to rebuild the city and their lives.

Keith Farrow, vice dean at Sheffield Cathedral, said: “We’re trying to organise a day that both educates people on what happened to Sheffield in World War Two but also allows people to come together to remember the incredible sacrifices that were made by the local population”.

“We must never forget the sacrifices people made, the generosity people shared and the strength of community in the face of adversity. We can still learn a lot from that today and I hope all of Sheffield will join me to reflect on the enormous efforts that have led us to where we are today – a thriving, vibrant and progressive city.” There was hardly an area of the city centre that escaped unscathed in the devastating raid that took place over two

The military vehicles will be on display from 12 noon until 6pm. The remembrance service will take place at 7pm. Neil Anderson, author of ‘Sheffield’s Date With Hitler’ said: “Covid halted plans for our original planned event in December 2020 and we’re very grateful for the support of Sheffield City Council that has finally allowed this 80th commemoration event to happen – one year one.” The event is free.

Changes to Covid restrictions New Covid-19 restrictions came into force from 30th November in response to the emergence of UK cases of the Omicron variant. From Tuesday (30th), face coverings must be worn in shops and on public transport, unless medically exempt. International arrivals into the UK must take a Day 2 PCR test and self-isolate until they receive a negative test. All contacts of suspected Omicron cases must also self-isolate, regardless of their vaccination status, and will be contacted by NHS Test and Trace.

Pupils in Year 7 and above have been advised to wear masks in communal areas in schools. The Government has said that these restrictions are precautionary and will be reviewed in three weeks. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health in Sheffield, said: "New variants of concern are always a worry as we don't know exactly how transmissible they are or how effective our current vaccines will be, but they don't change how we tackle Covid. The government has acted swiftly following the emergence of this variant and that should be taken as an indicator of the level of concern.

BUS DRIVERS GO ON STRIKE Hundreds of bus drivers have gone on strike over a pay dispute bringing disruption to services. More than 560 Stagecoach employees, based in Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham, supported the action after a pay offer from the firm was rejected. Strikes in Barnsley and Rotherham are set to run until 4 December and in Sheffield until 5 December. Stagecoach said a number of services would not run except for dedicated school buses. According to the union, Stagecoach offered its South Yorkshire workers a 2% pay rise, which it said was well below what the firm had offered employees in other areas of the country. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: "Stagecoach made profits touching £60m last year... yet it cannot make a decent offer to its staff."

BUS SERVICES TO BE REDUCED Statement from South Yorkshire leaders on bus services

Stagecoach Yorkshire's managing director, Phil Medlicott, said he was disappointed with the union's response.

Counicil leaders from across South Yorkshire and the Mayor of SY MP Dan Jarvis have issued the following statement regards the reduction of bus services in south yorkshire.

He said workers had been offered a 4.5% increase to the hourly pay rate.

“We have recently received notification that First Group are intending to make cuts to some of the services they provide in South Yorkshire, especially in Sheffield.

"We know that our employees deserve a good pay rise and we have left no stone unturned in our attempts to reach a settlement," he added. A company spokesperson said: "We have worked very hard to avoid this action and are extremely sorry for the disruption this will cause."

The Mayoral Combined Authority is engaging with the company, which has postponed wider cuts elsewhere for the time being. Nonetheless the planned changes are deeply disappointing, and the threat of further reductions by bus operators remains very real. The move comes as passengers already face disruption in the run-up to Christmas from industrial disputes between Stagecoach and its drivers.

It is deeply frustrating to be in this position after 18 months when unprecedented public money has gone to operators, including over £20m to First alone. The MCA has also pumped major resources into reviving passenger numbers, including committing millions for fare concessions, and agreed an ambitious roadmap for the transformation of our network, including many measures bus companies have been clamouring for... Our immediate focus now will be on minimising disruption for passengers. But we remain absolutely committed to creating a fundamentally better service. That includes, as we have always intended, bringing forward proposals for the January MCA meeting to consider starting the formal process of investigating bus franchising as a way to deliver the service South Yorkshire needs.”

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window.

Man stopped from riding electric scooter on M1 Police swapped their usual cars for their fleet of 4x4 vehicles and were kept very busy over the icy, snowy weekend, helping motorists and pedestrians, keeping the motorways clear, ensuring that stranded drivers were kept safe and helped on their way.

Unfortunately, one driver ran out of fuel on the M1. His passenger took it upon himself to get out of the car, board his electric scooter and set off on his journey off the motorway. The scooter rider was located and taken off the motorway, where he was found to be a disqualified driver. He was reported for driving while disqualified and without insurance, while the scooter was seized. SYP posted this message “Thanks to everybody who helped to clear stranded vehicles from the roads and even offer hot drinks. While this cold snap is still with us, please only drive if absolutely necessary and if you do have to drive, please ensure your vehicle is in good order, has plenty of fuel for the journey and you

have warm clothing and a fully charged mobile phone, just in case you do have to stop.”

A 67 year old NHS worker from Oughtibridge was rescued by locals after she became stranded in her car on her way home from work. After finishing a night-shift at 7am on Saturday morning, the un-named support worker became trapped on Langsett Road in Worrall. However, locals came to her rescue, even making her a hot drink and she eventually made it home after over 3½ hours stuck. Her journey back home to Oughtibridge had to take a detour after a tree had fallen and blocked the main Middewood Road. She then got stuck and stranded in Wor-

rall behind other cars and was then barricaded to the side of the road when a snow plough cleared the road but created a wall of snow, between her car and the main carriageway. Without any idea what to do the lady had to sit patiently. After a while a young lady from a nearby hair salon brought over a warm drink after seeing her plight. And… not far away, a group of young local men, who had been helping numerous stranded vehicles, began digging away the wall of snow left by the Plough and freed the stranded lady and pushed her onto the cleared road. “I am so thankful to everyone that helped me and it was great to see such goodwill and help on show”

A Taste of Italy at Fox Valley Fox Valley Retail Park certainly has its fair share of food outlets but newcomer Raffina has made quite a splash since it opened in May 2021. Its fresh, welcoming decor, inspired by coffee houses in Southern Italy, and wide choice of delicious cakes and hot drinks has seen the cafe becoming a hotspot at the retail park. Raffina aims to bring some of the finest Italian flavours to Stocksbridge, including the best -selling Gianduja chocolate cannoli and the Amarena cherry Bocconcini. Director and Sheffield-born businessman Mark Ross has a love of Italy and coffee has always dreamt of having a coffee shop where he could combine the two passions. He said, “I particularly liked the Fox Valley site and so when a unit that had been a restaurant came available in late 2020, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to start a coffee shop and co-locate Redbrik, our estate agency, in the office upstairs.” Despite the two businesses sharing a building, they are operated as separate entities. Mark comments; “At first I think people were a little nervous of coming in as they thought they would be pressured into buying a house by a load of estate agents! But we were really keen that Raffina operates as its own business and has its own identity. We’re now getting lots of regulars, usually people who are attracted by our quality coffee and relaxing environment. Both businesses benefit by being in the shared building and its been great to be able to offer flexible employment to local people.”

Although the cafe has a definite European flavour, there are also a lot of instantly recognisable favourites on the menu too. Cafe manager and Stocksbridge local Brendan Snape is keen to respond to what customers are asking for. He said, “We’re still in our first year of trading and so at the moment we are really listening to what customers are asking for. We’ve added some traditional favourites such as Bakewell slice, savoury Danish pastries and flapjack to complement our Italian offerings and they’ve been very well received. We try to make as much in-house as possible, and always try to offer some gluten free and vegan options.”

Brendan, who took over day to day management at Raffina in September, is excited to see Raffina mature into a local gem. He added, “With the challenge that Covid-19 has brought to the hospitality industry its been a difficult year to open a business. However this Autumn has seen us go from strength to strength. We’re a little bit tucked away at the top of the Independent Quarter but once

people know where to find us they tend to return time and time again.” Raffina is serving a range of festive specials to celebrate Christmas. Don’t forget to use your special Look Local 20% off voucher to experience Raffina for yourself. Raffina,Unit 5b Fox Valley Way S36 2AB Find Raffina on Facebook and Instagram @ raffinafoxvalley

Raffina has a commitment to using high quality produce. The coffee is imported from Naples and was chosen after several taste tests involving 15 brands of coffee! Tea is the finest loose-leaf from Liverpool based Brew Tea company whilst the hot chocolate (a customer favourite!) is from chocolate specialist Callebaut. Lunch choices have just been expanded to include home-made soup, quiches and locally-made savoury pastries with even more options to come in the New Year. Other plans for 2022 include expanding the popular sandwich menu, adding more take-out healthy lunch options aimed at local office workers, evening bistro nights and opportunities to use the venue for private events.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

I have just had confirmation from Father Christmas that he will be touring around part of Deepcar on Sunday 19th December. He will be leaving the Village Hall on Helliwell Lane from approximately 3pm heading along St Margaret’s. Deepcar Village Committee Association will accompany him with Christmas music. We will not be knocking on doors, so listen for the bell. Father Christmas will stop for children should they want to see or meet him and grown-ups are very welcome too. Or just wave to Father Christmas from a window and he will wave back. Both Father Christmas and the Committee wish to keep you all safe. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all both a Happy and Healthy Christmas and good wishes for 2022. Regards Sue Goosey Secretary of Deepcar Village Community Association

Medical centre Dear Sir, I have been dismayed in recent weeks by the criticisms of our local GP’s that have appeared in the pages of Look Local and wish to express my support for the whole Primary Care Team at Valley Medical and indeed of all who work in health and social care. The local services deserve the highest praise for the way they have managed to cope with the huge demands imposed by the pandemic and not least for their participation in the successful vaccination programme.

much more on our store.

Covid 19 has had to be managed alongside all the other demands on the NHS which was already under-resourced in comparison to many of our European neighbours. And of course the Covid 19 crisis is not yet behind us. I for one am grateful for the way alternative ways of working are helping to avoid crowded waiting rooms which are surely a means of putting already vulnerable people at extra risk. Face to face consultations are of course sometimes necessary but I would prefer to trust my local doctors to decide when this is appropriate rather than our Secretary of State for Health who has undoubtedly fuelled some of the misguided criticisms. All of the flak aimed at our doctors reminds me of the way in which those who don’t work in the education sector can lightly assume that teachers only work in term time from nine until three thirty and that academics are all on vacation when their students are. When our GP’s are not seeing people face to face it is surely crass to imagine them with their feet on their desks! Our heartfelt thanks are due to the whole team and I for one will be expressing this when my next contact comes face to face, or if appropriate, by phone or video link. Yours Ann Ashworth Deepcar

Thanks to all who turned up at St Mary’s Church Bolsterstone for the Remembrance Day 11-11-11 Service. It was nice to hear Bolsterstone Male Voice singing after a long absence due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

Have we been here before, going back in time it was under Beeching and a Conservative Government that closed Deepcar Railway Station in the early part of the 1970s and took up the track in the 1980s from Dunford Bridge to Midland Station in Sheffield. By the way it was electric trains back then and it was only using electricity Sheffield to Manchester because it was uphill and the return from Manchester to Sheffield was downhill so it recharged itself so it cost nothing. MPs with 2nd, 3rd and 4th jobs should note our railway back then cost nothing. Jim Hinchey

Stocksbridge Park Steels invited The Royal British Legion to their match on Saturday 13th against Frickley to take collections for the Poppy Appeal at the turnstile. By September 1989 we began retailing on the ground floor, all new and shining it was fantastic! 2007 Saw a rather lengthy refurbishment of the building to create a upper sales floor area this allowed the business to further evolve. The beautiful upper sales floor specialising in Special Occasion Wear, evening wear , mother of the bride , matching headpieces, handbags, shoes. Putting New Image firmly on the Map! We have evolved, survived lots of changes including Covid and we are now ready to face retailing in 2022!

Squash team beat Fulwood Stocksbridge’s squash team played their third game of the season in the Sheffield & District League, matching last weeks comprehensive result by beating Fulwood 16-1. Sporting their new kit, Mark Wingfield & Aaron Alcock started off proceedings by both winning 3-0, although both matches had periods where the result could have been different, with Aaron in his own words ‘damn lucky’ by saving 9 game points to come through with the victory. Alex Timmins-Jones also secured a victory with a 3-1 win over their number 2 player. The most anticipated match of the evening came when Ed Walker played Lee Rose, both number 1 seeds. Lee used to play for Stocksbridge before moving to the other side of Sheffield a few years ago. Ed showed his class with a dominant performance, beating Lee 3-0 to secure the points for the team, with Lee being gracious in defeat. This meant that Stocksbridge

secured 16 points, which is the maximum. Stocksbridge have repeated this result two games in a row, to maintain a really good start to the season. Stocksbridge sit 4th in the table with a game in hand on the teams above them. After the match, both teams enjoyed the generous hospitality and fantastic curries of our new sponsor Rajasthan Spice on Manchester Road. League Points System There are 4 matches which are each best of 5 games. The players are seeded and will play the matching seed from the opponents team. 15 points are needed to win each game (or by 2 clear points, if the scores are level at 15 all) with a league point awarded for each game won. The winning

team is the one with the most games (or if a tie, the most aggregated points), with 4 bonus points for the winning team. For example, we won the match against Fulwood 12 games to 1.

Stocksbridge Squash hold an open night on Thursday 7pm to 9pm at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre and new players are always welcome. It’s £3 for members and £4 for non-members.

Speedway to reveal signings SHEFFIELD bosses are set to unveil their 2022 Premiership side for a second successive season in the top flight.

Rugby ready for mini tournament With another blank weekend & no rugby, Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby will at last get some games in, by holding a mini tournament at Coal Pit Lane this weekend.

The club will reveal the full 1-7 next Wednesday night via their social media channels – and co-promoter Damien Bates has confirmed there will be new faces.

There are three teams involved with near neighbours Sheffield Oaks & Wakefield based Stanley Rodillians making up the triteam event. The first match will kick off at 1pm, weather permitting & this is an opportunity to get some rugby into some of the wider squad members to showcase their skills.

Bates and boss Simon Stead have spent several hours talking to riders since the end of last season. He said: “We’ve looked at many riders and our first focus was to keep some of the riders from last season. “We’ve then looked at several riders we feel can add to those we are keep- asz Musielak talking about coming ing to give us a strong team to com- back it has to be good news. “Season tickets will represent great value, particularly considering we are looking at extra meetings next season,” said Bates. “I think there’s a good vibe about the club right now and the feedback we had from our supporters was all very positive about last season. I think the fans will be very pleased with the riders we have come up with.”

The tournament is based on a 10 a side format & a shortened playing period, with rolling substitutions to keep everyone fresh. Club Captain, Adam Roles-Middlehurst said ‘ this is a great chance to get some quality rugby into the boys, there have been too many breaks in the fixture list for us to pick up any real momentum, so let’s hope the pitches are fit to play on’. There will be hot & cold refreshments available for spectators, with the Clubs ‘own recipe’ mulled wine likely to be on sale. There will be a trophy for the player of the tournament, & all are invited to the Club’s HQ on Manchester Road afterwards. Stocksbridge will return to League action on 11th December with a tough assignment away at table toppers Rotherham Phoenix before ending the Year with the ‘Christmas Jumper’ fixture at Coal Pit Lane against Hessle Rugby the week after. Supporters are asked to wear their Christmas Jumpers in support of the Club’s chosen charities, donations will be taken during the game.

Snow Stops Play at the Golf Club The heavy winds and snow put paid to any golf at Stocksbridge over the weekend. Beautiful, wintry snow scenes are no good for golfing and plenty of members at the Club had to find other ways to occupy themselves. However, there was some golf mid-week, before the wintry conditions set in.

On 24 November, the Dragons Section competed in Round 5 of the Seniors' Winter Cup. Stuart Roebuck (23), from Division 2, was the overall winner and by a clear margin with 41 points. Stuart played steadily across the whole round and

played particularly well over the last 7 holes. Robert Haythorne (18), from Division 1, was second with 38 points, starting well with a birdie on the first hole. John Sykes (17) also finished with 38 points, but lost out on countback to Robert.

The only other competition of the week was the Pro's Midweek 9-hole Stableford. Liam O'Sullivan (0), the Club's League Team Captain, won with 20 points, a very impressive score given that he had no handicap allowance. Liam's 9 holes included an eagle on the first hole and birdies on the fourth,

fifth and eighth. Liam's gross score of 33 was 2 under par and could have been better but for dropped shots on the second and seventh. Stuart Marsh (10), scored well with 19 points to clinch second place. There were then four players on 17 points - Ashley Nightingale (19), Mick Hulbert (5), Jon Bryan (12) and Eric Wilkinson (4) - but Ashley took third place on countback.

Runners thrive in the cold

Over a weekend when many races were cancelled due to Storm Arwen, Penistone runners still managed to compete and enjoyed some success. England masters international Andrew Pearson claimed second place in the men’s over55 category at the Doncaster 10k. Andrew’s time was 36-16. Gareth Irvine had a great run achieving a lifetime personal best for 10k in 36-46. Penistone were well represented at the Clowne Half Marathon. First back for the club was Keith Gordon in 1-49-26. Keith also claimed second place in his men’s over70 age category. Keith was closely followed in by Bryan Harrod in 1-49-27. First lady back for Penistone was Chloe Worth in 1-59-55. Simon Pike claimed 12th place at the Edwinstowe 10k in a time of 42-12. The previous weekend saw the third fixture of the South Yorkshire Cross Country league at Campsall near Doncaster. Twenty four Penistone athletes competed across a range of age groups. There were top ten finishes for Josie Charlesworth (9th under11 girls), Flynn Rogers (8th under13 boys), Ruby Sykes (8th senior ladies), Nichola McNally (5th over45 ladies), Barbara Haigh (1st over75 ladies), Kai Sunman (4th senior men), Hugh Mackie (4th under20 men), James Fryers (8th under20 men) and Ray Brown (3rd over75 men).
