MP calls for review into child covid vaccinations
Local MP Miriam Cates has co-ordinated a letter from ‘all-quarters’ calling for a review on child vaccination program of 1215 year olds.
The north Sheffield MP posted on her social media
and these must be balanced against the benefits.
“Throughout the pandemic I’ve done everything I can to stand up for children and their welfare. Whether that’s calling for schools to re-open, taking a lead on support for the early years, supporting local schools or serving on the Education Select Committee, I believe passionately that, as adults, we should always put the interests of our children first.
When the vaccination of 12-15 year olds began last September, the Chief Medical Officer said there was a ‘marginal benefit’ in vaccinating children, based largely on reducing the spread of the virus. But the situation has now changed, with the more transmissible Omicron as the dominant variant and more information about rare side effects.
Last week I co-ordinated a letter from MPs, doctors, and academics to the JCVI, asking the Committee to review the most up-todate evidence on the vaccination of children. The UK’s vaccination programme has been incredibly successful, with over 135million vaccinations now delivered, breaking the link between infections and serious illness.
So I’m calling on the JCVI to review the evidence to make sure that, if we do continue with the vaccination of children, we can be absolutely sure that it is in their best interest.”
However, the case for vaccinating children has never been clear-cut because – fortunately – children are at extremely low risk from COVID itself. Whilst very rare, all vaccines (like all medicines) carry risks,

Duke of Norfolk agrees to repair 'unridable' cycle path The Duke of Norfolk has agreed to repair a Chapeltown cycle path that is so muddy it is ‘unridable’, writes David Walsh for the Sheffield Star. He co-owns the business park with St Paul’s Developments, based in Chapeltown. Jeremy Robinson, of commercial estate agents Fowler Sandford, is his man in Sheffield. Mr Robinson said: “Smithywood Business Parks Development LLP is aware of the issue with the damaged length of path. The path was damaged by contractors during the construction of the adjacent building but mainly by illegal offroad motor bikes and 4x4 vehicles who are a constant problem in the area. “The path has been repaired and reinstated several times since its construction. It is proposed for the path to be repaired during Q1 2022 as soon as the site is dry enough for works to commence. Cyclist Dennis Patton has campaigned for completion of a 200m section, off Cowley Way, which he says has never been surfaced and is covered in ruts and muddy puddles. He said: “I’m delighted with the proposed repairs. I will look forward to the works being carried out to a decent standard and maintained for
the future. Thank you to The Star for supporting our campaign.” The route is four miles long and links Meadowhall with Chapeltown. It passes through Smithywood Business Park near a new PLP distribution centre. In December, Councillor Douglas Johnson, executive member for climate change, environment and transport at Sheffield City Council, said a new section of cycle path must be built with every new phase of the Smithywood development. He added: “However, we appreciate that this is dependent on the timescales of the developer and may take some time.” The Star contacted St Paul’s Developments and PLP for comment. In 2019 PLP bought 17 acres of land at Smithywood for a distribution centre which was completed in 2020. In June last year, trucking firm Advanced Supply Chain Group announced it had leased the warehouse for fashion brands and hoped to create 400 jobs over the next three years. SHEFFIELD 'DOESN'T WANT A BLOOD FEUD WITH NOTTINGHAM OVER ROBIN HOOD'S TRUE HOME The legendary outlaw may have been born in Loxley, South Yorkshire - prompting centuries of disagreement with the city of Nottingham. A band of merry Sheffielders campaigning to reclaim Robin Hood for the city said they want to avoid a “blood feud” with Nottingham. A book exploring the legend’s local roots went viral after it was launched by Sensoria, Sheffield Hallam University’s Culture and Creativity Research Institute and Loxley Primary School last month as part of their ongoing campaign to celebrate the folk hero’s links to Sheffield and South Yorkshire.
Ron Clayton, Sheffield-based historian and member of the campaign group, said the ‘jousting match’ between the two cities has been rumbling on for years and MPs on either side of the debate even had a tradition of arguing about it in Parliament some years ago. He said: “We are not trying to take anything away from Nottingham. "All we are trying to do is fit Loxley, South Yorkshire and indeed Yorkshire into the picture… “I would say to Nottingham: you’ve got your share of him and we’ve got our share of him. We don’t want to fight over it.

Knitter raises amazing £40,500
Janet Blackburn, aged 67, from Hillsborough has been raising money for Weston Park Cancer Charity, which supports the city’s cancer treatment hospital.
A Hillsborough knitter has used her skills to raise £40,500 for a city cancer hospital in Helped by three friends, she knits toys, blangratitude for care she and her husband received, writes Julia Armstrong for the Sheffield kets and clothes and sells them, having to learn how to set up shop online when the Star. pandemic meant she couldn’t do stalls at events and in the hospital. Janet decided to switch from raising money for Yorkshire Air Ambulance in gratitude for the exceptional care she received when both she and her late husband Rob had cancer. She said of the Weston Park charity: “They’re so good and so rewarding and so pleased. They make me feel quite special really. “It is a wonderful, absolutely fantastic hospital. Both me and my husband were under them in 2011. I decided when I felt better that I’d change to them and I’ve been doing it ever since.” Janet’s husband Rob was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in October 2010 and two weeks later Janet found she had breast cancer. She said: “It was awful because we found out that Rob’s was terminal.” Janet had a mastectomy and then her lymph nodes removed and Rob had palliative chemotherapy at Weston Park before he was admitted to the palliative care centre at the Northern General Hospital for end-of-life care. When Janet was being treated at Weston Park for a serious infection the following May, Rob became critically ill.
She was amazed when staff arranged to transport her to visit Rob, accompanied by a specialist nurse, two days running. They then arranged the care she needed to be able to stay in Rob’s room overnight, so she could be with him when he died. She said: “Everybody there, from the consultants down to the cleaners, they were all so, so lovely.” Everyone pulled together again to help Janet make it to Rob’s funeral. She said that the care has continued as charity staff support her and tell her where they spend her money every year. She has helped to provide improved treatment areas, wi-fi access and smart TVs for staff, recliner chairs in rooms, treats for young patients and much more. Janet had to change her way of working during the pandemic. “I used to have stalls in shops and arcades and anywhere that would have me, plus some fairs and things like that. When Covid came out, that stopped everything. “The first year I made hardly anything and got quite depressed, not making money. Before Christmas 2020, I found online Christmas markets were popping up and got on one of them.

Have your say on the future of city centre
Inquest into ‘young man’s’ death
A consultation on the future of Sheffield city centre is now open, inviting people to share their views on how the city centre should be shaped in the future to adapt and thrive following the challenges of the pandemic.
The new communities would offer direct access to all the amenities the city centre has to offer, mirroring established and popular neighbourhoods such as Kelham Island.
A new Vision for the development of the city centre sets out the diverse role it plays as a hub of commerce and growth in the city, centre for shopping, leisure, and nightlife, as well as home to thousands of people.
The consultation will also seek opinions on other important areas, including the ‘spine’ of the city centre, which runs from Castlegate to the Moor, plans for key areas such as Fargate and options for the future of the former John Lewis store.
The five-week consultation sets out our ambitions for the city centre over the next 20 years, The feedback provided in this consultafocusing on key areas such as housing, regenera- tion will be used to inform more detailed tion, public transport, and green spaces. plans for different areas of the city centre A 27-year-old man who died after absconding from a secure mental health unit was found to have "a significant amount" of amphetamines in his system, an inquest has heard. Kieran Barrett had been under the care of staff at Forest Lodge, an inpatient unit in the Worrall area of Sheffield, when he died in February last year. During day three of Mr Barrett's inquest, held at Sheffield Town Hall, the court heard that he had absconded from the unit on the morning of Saturday, February 1, 2020.
and will help to create a shared Vision for the city’s future. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Executive Member for City Futures: Development, Culture and Regeneration, said: “We know how much interest there is in the future of the city centre and that people want a city centre they can feel proud of. The consultation will run until Friday 11th February 2022. People can view the plans and provide comments at www. ourcitycentre-shf.com, by emailing info@ourcitycentre-shf.com or by calling 08081965105.
Development work is already underway to transform much of the city centre, including the £470m Heart of the City scheme, as well as funding secured to revitalise the high street and Castlegate through the Future High Streets Fund and the council’s recent successful bid to the Levelling Up Fund. The city centre Vision looks ahead to how city centre spaces can be best utilised to meet the needs of Sheffielders, including plans to create five new distinctive neighbourhoods with high quality, sustainable housing in Neepsend, Wicker Riverside, Castlegate, the Moor and Furnace Hill. More than 20,000 new homes would be created, relieving pressure on greenfield sites, and helping to meet housing demands for Sheffield’s growing population.

Glen Powe Park Huge thanks to all the volunteers that braved the persistent rain and helped to clear the garden behind the Cecil Brealey Memorial bench at Glen Howe Park.
They cleared some of the brambles and overgrowth to expose the steps and part of the path that has been blocked and hidden for years. Hopefully in the coming months we can uncover the remainder of the path and connect it to the steps further up. Great work everyone!

Blues and twos prominent at College Barnsley College students gained valuable experience by taking part in an engagement event designed to raise awareness of the importance of first aid. Saving lives on the frontline is all in a day’s work for College Construction Technician and St John Ambulance Unit Manager, Arran McCallum, who volunteers for the Oakwell Unit, supporting the NHS on the frontline in Barnsley and the wider area by providing essential services to care. Business, Construction, Engineering, Health and Social Care, Public Services and Sport students were able to find out what St John Ambulance does on the front line, the lifesaving equipment the volunteers use on the ambulance and the action required in certain situations. Arran said: “We set up the engagement event to provide students with lifesaving knowledge for the future and provide them with skills that could be required in any emergency situation. As Oakwell Unit Manager, I’m really proud to bring lifesaving knowledge to our students at Barnsley College. This is a fantastic opportunity and I aim to give basic first aid awareness to every student possible. If anyone is interested in volunteering

Firstly I would like to wish everyone in the area a Happy New Year. As most people are aware the council is now holding regular public meetings in the area to engage and understand what is important to local people. The next meeting will take place on-line due to the rise in covid cases. This follows the successful meeting we held at The Venue. The meeting amongst other things will be looking at the feedback from the survey we did at the end of last year, thank you to everyone who took time to complete the survey. The information you provided will be the starting point for our local community plan to ensure it deals with issues that are important to local people. If you wish to join the meeting please book a place via the link below. https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/home/your-citycouncil/north-local-area-committee With very best wishes Councillor Julie Grocutt Stocksbridge & Upper Don Ward
YOUTHS FACING ACTION OVER ATTACKS ON BUSES A group of youths are facing action over vandalism which has targeted buses and led to services operating under a curfew on a Sheffield estate, writes David Kessen for the Sheffield Star. Police have identified several suspects, after a wave of attacks on vehicles which led to the operator Stagecoach stopping its number seven buses at Halifax Road at 6pm each night, rather than allowing them to travel the last leg of their route on to Ecclesfield. It prompted talks between concerned Sheffield Councillor Mike Chaplin, who represents Parson Cross, one of the estates which was cut off from the service by the move, and the police. He said he understood parents of around half a dozen youths had been sent formal letters by police about what was going on. He said he would like to see the curfew lifted now that police had taken action over the issue. “It seems as though the problem may be curtailed,” he said. Stagecoach services across Sheffield are currently limited by ongoing strike action over pay by the union Unite. Police have confirmed they have identified youths they believe to be involved in the anti-social behaviour at the heart of the problem. Sgt Scott Sarson, of the Sheffield North East Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Toward the end of 2021, officers were required to respond to a number of reports of anti-social behaviour and damage being caused in this area - with a bus unfortunately being damaged during one incident. This activity is not acceptable and will not be tolerated in our community spaces.

Criminals begging bin men Chapeltown car chase to look for used Covid tests They might also want to skip a period of self-isolation, with potentially devastating results. “These are people who have either tested positive, or simply don’t want to go through the bother of taking a test,” says Hall. “Whatever their motive, they want to mix with colleagues, friends and the general public without a thought for their welfare.” The second trade is in positive tests results, for those who fancy a bit of paid time off work. “Why anybody would fake having a potentially deadly disease after everything we’ve been through in the last two years is beyond us,” says Hall, “but here we are.” There have also been warnings that scammers are using the QR codes of tests that social media users are posting on the Facebook walls, and selling screengrabs as a money-making commodity. What’s happening on the ground? The hidden market in USED lateral flow tests Both positive and negative tests changing hands for cash in new Covid scam Homeowners and businesses are being urged to watch out for people going through their bins for used lateral flow tests. A waste collection company says that Covid scammers are selling on both positive and negative tests for cold, hard cash as buyers attempt to trick employers and venues. According to Divert.co.uk, refuse collectors are being offered money to allow these people to pick through waste in order to find used test devices. “It’s a disgusting and immoral trade,” says Divert.co.uk spokesperson Mark Hall. “This kind of selfishness and stupidity will lead to further infections and deaths.” What’s behind the scam? The fraud is two-fold, says Divert.co.uk’s Mark Hall. First, there’s a trade in negative test results for people who want to use them to fool employers, venues that demand a negative test result, and phone apps that the person is clear of Covid.
It might not be foxes or rats going through your bins. At least not the rodent kind of rat – a different, two-legged kind of vermin. Divert.co.uk says they’ve had reports of refuse operators being approached by shady individuals asking to rifle through waste looking for used tests. In some cases, they’ve been offered money for doing so. And sometimes, they don’t even ask. Commercial refuse collectors have found sacks of everyday office waste – usually ignored by fourlegged vermin - torn apart to find lateral flow tests. “It’s absolutely maddening,” says Mark Hall. “Refuse workers have a hard enough job as it is without clearing up after these goons." “As far as we know, nobody’s been threatened by these criminals, but it can only be a matter of time.” But it’s the act of fraud that worries Divert.co.uk’s Mark Hall, as dodging Covid tests is one reason the pandemic is lasting so long. It only takes one person with the highly-infectious Omicron variant at a sporting event which requires a negative test from all spectators to spread it to dozens, hundreds, or thousands of people. “Look, we’re all sick of Covid, but it’s clear from the daily stats that Covid isn’t sick of us,” he says.
Sheffield ‘Top Gun’ wins title ‘down under’ SHEFFIELD top gun Jack Holder has started 2022 in style by winning the New South Wales title.
He admitted he was concerned with his early mechanical issues which, thankfully, got sorted.
ting it all together and hopefully we’ll be strong in most areas. I’m looking forward to it.”
Holder got the better of Wolverhampton’s Sam Masters, former Tigers favourite Josh Pickering and Poole talent Ben Cook in an entertaining meeting at Kurri Kurri.
“I wasn’t confident after the first race with bike trouble!” he said. “But we managed to get it sorted and came out on top so it was all good, I’m very pleased about it all.
Tigers are currently planning their fixture schedule but one date already bolted in is Todd Kurtz’ testimonial on Thursday March 24.
He had to recover from bike gremlins early on to go on his winning run to claim his fourth title – one behind brother Chris, the 2012 world champion.
“Kurri is a track where it’s easy to be fast and not much passing so I always have to be on my Agame and thankfully I was able to reach that level.”
Jubilant Jack said: “It felt great, racing at home in front of my girlfriend and my family is always a pleasure and there can be no better feeling than standing on the top step when they’re all there to see it.”
Holder has given the new Sheffield team his seal of approval after fans welcomed the news. “The team looks awesome and I’m really pleased to be a part of it again,” he said. “The management have done a great job put-
Holder is a confirmed starter for that meeting alongside popular Dane Nicolai Klindt and Belle Vue’s Brady Kurtz. The club will face Wolverhampton and Belle Vue in their League Cup group meetings before heading into the Premiership programme and club bosses have also been pondering an extra individual meeting.
Two people arrested in Sheffield after police forced to bring car to a stop in Chapeltown This was the scene after police in Sheffield had to bring a car to a stop by making contact, following what they branded ‘shocking driving’.Officers described how the pursuit began in West Yorkshire before crossing the county border, where South Yorkshire Police took over the chase. South Yorkshire Police’s Operational Support Unit said: “Shocking driving meant we had to make contact with the vehicle to bring the pursuit to an end in order to protect the public. X 2 arrested, stolen vehicle (burglary) on false plates.”
Trains affected TransPennine Express said it would be introducing an amended timetable from Monday "due to disruption being caused by increased levels of sickness". Services between Scarborough and Manchester will be replaced with an hourly service to York, and extending to Leeds at peak times. Routes, including between Newcastle and Liverpool, Cleethorpes, Sheffield, Hull and Manchester, are also affected. The firm's managing director Matthew Golton said the timetable changes would affect all routes and was due to "the ongoing impact of Covid and the Omicron variant, as well as some industrial relations issues". On Thursday, 22 TransPennine trains were cancelled and another 15 terminated before their planned destination. Passengers are advised to check the firm's website for the latest information.

Stocksbridge Park Steels claimed a dramatic 2-2 draw with Shildon after a late equaliser saved the visitors a point
The Steels took the lead when Luke Mangham headed on a cross for Ross Goodwin to convert. Shildon equalised when Billy Greulich-Smith converted from close range before they took the lead after a good passing move gave space to Sam Barker to finish. Lee Cooksey headed from a Nathaniel Crofts cross to give Stocksbridge a point.

Stocksbridge came out with more energy in the second half and looked good to get an equaliser. They had several corners and Reece Fielding wasn’t far off with one of his headers. The Steels did have the ball in the back of the net when Mangham was able to score from close range but it’d be deemed offside, a decision that looked to be correct.
though to finish the move and get his fourth goal of the season.
where Greulich-Smith was there to finish from close range.
Shildon had a great chance to kill the game off and secure all three points for themselves. Ben Trotter had been quiet in the game but came alive to pass three players before going one-on-one with Hall. The Yorkshire international won the duel and made an impressive save to keep Stocksbridge in the game.
The Steels almost got a second when Nodder forced a good save from Newbrook but Shildon would be the next team to strike. A cross from the right found Kurtis Matthews in space to head across goal
Shildon had completely turned the game around before the end of the first half as they didn’t take long to take the lead. The Railwaymen were patient in their build-up but eventually found the hole they needed with a quick passing move as Dean
It was soon after when the game started to get very tasty. Joe Posthill went in very late on Jack Tinker which started the first fracas which were not helped by the fact no free kick was given. Tinker got his revenge later with a lunging tackle on
Posthill which in the modern game could have very easily been a red card in the modern game. Instead it was just a booking. Ian Richards decided to change the game at this point. Despite his impressive game keeping Dean Thexton quiet, Fielding came off along with Goodwin with Andy Ring and Alex O’Connor coming on. This came with a formation change as the team went to 3-5-2, an exotic formation by the standards of non-league. This change worked. The ball was spread out to Crofts who put the ball in. There were many men in the box but it was Cooksey who got onto the end of it who head the ball in and get Stocksbridge level. Both teams pushed up to get a late winner. A big long ball from the back went over the heads of everyone in the Shildon defence and Mangham was alive to it. Unluckily for him it didn’t bounce right and he couldn’t get onto it. A late free kick from Shildon could have caused danger but it was blocked by the one man wall, leading to a crucial Steels point. Forthcoming fixture: Sat 15 Jan v Brighouse, 3pm KO

Sam Scrivens broke the offside trap in the final minute to take a ball from 30 yards out. He outpaced the defence and his powerful low shot from 20 yards beat the keeper low to the right of goal.

A report by Martin Webb
PCFC 5 Albion Sports 1
Snow followed by heavy rain meant this match was in doubt, but excellent work by the volunteer ground staff made sure the match started. Church were on a good run of form with 8 wins from 9 matches.
A thoroughly entertaining end to this match warmed the hands of the 255 people in the crowd. Church manager Steve Lenthall
Half a dozen goals reflected the open nature of this highly entertaining game, played on surprisingly good pitch. The 255 fans had to wait until the stroke of half-time for the first goal of the game when a ball fell to Elliott Firth who hit a blistering 30 yard shot beat the keeper low to right of goal Half time PCFC 1 Albion 0
Nathan Keightley jinked his way at full pace to goal number three.
A minute after the restart and Church were two goals to the good when from a corner, Brett Lovell rose the highest to power a downward header low to the left of goal.
And Brett Lovell scored his second of the game when he met a cross from a corner and the ball skimmed in off the underside of the bar, to make it 4-0
Church carried on their good start with a couple of quick breaks down the right.
Albion did pull a goal back in the 89th minute but the rampant home-side were still not finished with scoring.
“It was a great result today. Firstly on behalf of me, my assistant John Whitehead and the lads I’d like to thank the great set of volunteers we have here at Penistone Church Football Club including Dave Hampshire, David Dodd, Chris Upton, Ian Richardson and others who did a superb job when the heavens opened to make sure the pitch was playable. Grass roots football doesn’t happen without people like these.” Next week it’s going to be a hard test at home against Handsworth but we’ll train on Wednesday and prepare for it. Forthcoming fixture: Saturday 15 Jan v Handsworth (h) KO 3pm

Thexton clipped the ball through to home debutant Sam Barker who finished strongly past Ed Hall. That meant Shildon had the lead going into half time.
Shildon started off as the better side. They pressed looking for the early lead and the uneven pitch looked to favour the hosts as they appeared to be used to it. An early fright came from a great cross from the right wing but Jordan Lemon rose higher than the much taller Greulich-Smith to clear it away and prevent a definite goal.
Stocksbridge did get their goal though. Kurtis Turner’s initial cross was blocked and the chance seemed to be over until Mangham was able to knock it on. Goodwin was there

After holding Shildon off, Stocksbridge grew into the game. Josh Nodder found some space down the left and cross the ball in. Goodwin was there to head it goalwards but it just went wide.
