Chief Executive Kate Josephs:
Council Cmte deliberate on findings A cross-party committee of councillors was recently established, following Kate Josephs’ statement on 14 January about a gathering in her former role at the Government’s Covid-19 Taskforce. Following the release of Sue Gray’s update, the Leader of the Council, Cllr Terry Fox, has made the following statement: “It’s clear from Sue Gray’s update today that the event from December 17, 2020, is going to be investigated by the Metropolitan Police. "The council’s cross-party committee is due to meet again tomorrow, and they
will consider Sue Gray’s update as part of their deliberations. We now need to let the committee, chaired by Cllr Julie Grocutt, do its work.” The Sue Gray report said: "No conclusions should be drawn, or inferences made from this other than it is now for the police to consider the relevant material in relation to those incidents. The police have also said this does not in itself mean that they will decide to take further action or that there has necessarily been a breach of the regulations”.

SCHOOL RECEIVES WATERPROOF KITS
The Waterproof and Wellies Project, part of The Outdoor Guide Foundation, is raising £5m to provide State Primary Schools with outdoor clothing & welly boots to enable children to learn about and enjoy the outdoors. The pupils of Hillsborough Primary School were delighted to benefit from the Waterproof & Wellies Project, devised by founder Gina Bradbury Fox. The project was launched by TV presenter Gemma Hunt from CBeebies in Bristol last year. So far, 140 schools across the UK have received 1400 outdoor kits. Government figures show there are over 20,000 primary schools in the UK in which a number of families do not have easy access to the right gear to enjoy the outdoors*. The project, part of The Outdoor Guide Foundation, aims to raise £5m to provide 10 sets of high-quality outdoors kit, consisting of a waterproof jacket, trousers and welly boots to every state primary school across the country over the next six years. Headteacher of Hillsborough Primary School, Nicola Wileman, said: “We are so grateful to Lily’s bakery in Hillsborough and the Outdoor Guide for the donation of wellies and waterproofs to be used by the
children at Hillsborough Primary School. The donation has made a real difference already, with more children now being able to access the outdoor space in all weathers than we previously had before. Being situated on a roundabout, we have very little green space in school and this donation has made it possible for us to utilise Hillsborough Park more to explore our learning outside. The children have loved using the wellies and waterproofs to explore their local environment and have shown a real love of learning outside no matter what the weather; in fact, they have learnt, that the rain can make it even more fun!!” Gina Bradbury Fox, co-founder of The Outdoor Guide (TOG), said: “Lack of access to weatherproof clothing is a real barrier for children engaging in outdoor learning. The project aims to democratise access to the great outdoors by donating 10 kits to every state primary school in Britain, meaning all kids can join their classmates for fun, fresh air and adventures in nature.” The Waterproof & Wellies Project officially kicked off in March with Gemma Hunt, CBBC TV presenter. Land Rover, CSSC and haulier Sanderson have delivered kits across the country to over 120 schools.

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window.

Jim’s epic coastline walk leaves Scotland after eventful 8 months Jim Morton has reached another milestone in his quest to walk the entire mainland coast of the UK and visit each lighthouse on the way. On 19 January, and after walking 4410 miles in total (3838 in Scotland), Jim crossed the border back into England. The intrepid walker has worn eight walking boots/ shoes along the way and is currently in the north east of England near Sunderland. The rest of the east, south coast and the coast of Wales await before Jim can start making his way inland back to Penistone. Jim from Penistone told Look Local "I’m walking the coast of mainland Great Britain for Gurkha Welfare Trust because they have served Britain for over 200 years” I set off on the 12 April 2021 for my walk of a lifetime which has been in the making since 1967. Huge cannabis factory discovery A large scale cannabis factory has been discovered in an industrial unit in Sheffield. Neighbourhood policing officers as well as members of South Yorkshire Police’s ‘Fortify Team’, which concentrates on tackling organised crime, were involved in the raid. The Sheffield North East neighbourhood policing team said: “The team have executed a warrant, with help from our Fortify Team, under the misuse of drugs act at an industrial estate in Ecclesfield where large quantities of cannabis were being grown. “This is funding organised crime and violence in the community. “We are committed removing drugs from the streets and will continue to act on intelligence from the community.” To pass on information about those involved in the cultivation or supply of cannabis in Sheffield, call South Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Nepal trip A young man from north Sheffield will later this year embark on a life changing expedition to Nepal. Patrick Larking, from north Sheffield will begin his 8-week trip in June. He will live with a disadvantaged community and help the young people of that community build businesses and infrastructure that will sustain them for years. Raleigh’s ethos is not just to fix for the short term but to focus on the young people of Nepal, Costa Rica, and Tanzania, and try to give them the opportunities that we take for granted. The former Bradfield School pupil faced growing up with adversities, during his teenage years he discovered he had Scoliosis and Kyphosis which required major spinal surgery to rectify. All this made the young man who now works for Gripple into the person he is today. Patrick told Look Local “It makes me so grateful that I can even attempt a fitness challenge like this that for a long time would have been impossible for
me. Now I can proudly say I am a Sheffield University graduate and Gripple engineer which I never thought I would be able to say. This has lead to me wanting to help others achieve their goals that maybe just need a helping hand.” As part of the scheme, Patrick needs to raise £1000, which will all go to Raleigh and to these communities. Over February Patrick has set himself the challenge of running a marathon over the course of the month which for him is a massive undertaking. Patrick said “If I finish the challenge before February ends, I’m going to keep going to run as many miles raise as much money as possible! Please help me reach my goal!” www.justgiving.com/patricklarking

A cash-strapped sales executive duped his employer out of hundreds of pounds after he used a company credit card to pay off a personal debt, writes Jon Cooper for the Sheffield Star.
WAS £1,354 INCLUDING VAT.
Sheffield Crown Court heard on January 20 how Adam McCaslin, aged 40, of High Street, Dodworth, Barnsley, had been working for Resolution Interiors between October and December 2020 but he was sacked after he was caught stealing from the company. Prosecuting barrister Jessica Butterell said McCaslin had been given a company phone and laptop and a pre-salary payment of £5,000 but he failed to secure any clients and he used the company credit card for personal use to pay for £70 trainers and to pay off a debt of £1,395.

McCaslin also handed over the company card to someone else to use to pay off a building materials debt which the defendant had incurred, but the builders’ merchants involved contacted the police, according to Ms Butterell. Judge Peter Kelson said: “Employers employed you on October 5, 2020, and sacked you on December 22, 2020. You secured no contracts but you used the credit card for your own personal benefit and you were dis-
missed for misconduct and you destroyed the iPhone they had given you out of spite. "This was just revenge and anger at your employers having found you out and dismissed you.” McCaslin told police he had been under pressure during the Covid-19 pandemic and he had debts and he was being pursued by debtcollectors and he smashed the phone in anger. The defendant, who has a previous conviction for stealing from another employer, pleaded guilty to two thefts, a fraud and to causing criminal damage. Daniel Penman, defending, said McCaslin, who has a family and a new job, has suffered with drug abuse and debt, and when he lost a previous job he turned to drink and drugs. But Mr Penman added that McCaslin has rekindled his relationship with his wife and daughter, he has a new job and he has addressed his debts. Judge Kelson recognised McCaslin is rekindling his family relationships and that he is mastering his debt but he opted to sentence him to six months of custody.

Stocksbridge Bypass crash: Two people taken to hospital after emergency services called to A616 in Sheffield Two people were taken to hospital after police, firefighters and paramedics were called to a crash in Sheffield. Emergency services were deployed to the scene of the collision on the A616 Stocksbridge Bypass, near the entrance to Fox Valley shopping centre, on Friday, January 28, just after 5pm. Two people from different vehicles were taken to hospital by ambulance but police said that upon assessment at hospital their injuries were found to be ‘non-serious’. The road was reopened at about 8pm that evening.
HIGHWAY CODE CHANGES As of Saturday 29 January, The Highway Code is changing. These advisory changes have been implemented to improve safety for people walking, cycling and horse riding. South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) is urging all road users to make sure they understand the changes, no matter what form of travel they take. Manager of SYSRP Joanne Wehrle said: “Under the new changes, every road user still has a responsibility to keep themselves and each other safe, and the changes mean being ready to give priority, leave space and be considerate of others.
The Cawthorne site of Naylor Industries plc is in the Penistone & Stocksbridge parliamentary seat and the company were delighted to receive the visit of constituency MP Miriam Cates, who toured Naylor’s clay and plastic pipe manufacturing operations.

Tree Angel JOB FEARS: Tesco to restructure Jack’s stores closing some stores
As part of the new rules, a hierarchy of road users has been introduced to ensure those who can do the greatest harm have the greatest responsibility to reduce the danger or threat they may pose to others. Specifically this means: • You now should give people crossing and waiting to cross and cyclists going straight ahead priority when turning in and out of junctions. • You now should leave at least 1.5 metres when overtaking people cycling at speeds of up to 30mph and give them more space when overtaking at higher speeds.
Tesco restructure and closure of Jack’s is devastating news for those affected says Usdaw
• When driving, you should now pass horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles at speeds under 10 mph and allow at least 2 metres of space. • You should now allow at least 2 metres of space and keep to a low speed when passing a Bolsterstone Christmas Tree pedestrian who is walking in the road. ing your carbon foot-print down at the same time. Regular customers and visitors bring their families year after year to get into the festive spirit. John and Elizabeth Johnson would like to thank all who took part in the festivities and for all their kind donations.
Retail trade union Usdaw will now enter into consultation talks with Tesco after the company announced the closure of just over half their in-store counter services and the Jack’s store format. Daniel Adams – Usdaw National Officer says: “Tesco has informed us that they are looking to undertake restructures across the business. Clearly this will be incredibly unsettling for those who may be affected. “We should not forget the role that key workers have played throughout the Coronavirus
pandemic and to receive this news is devastating. “Usdaw will do all we can to support members throughout the process and we will fully engage in consultation with the business with a view to protecting jobs and, where this is not possible, securing the best possible deal for those affected.” After opening just 13 stores nationwide, the supermarket giant has announced it will convert six of them into main Tesco stores and cut the rest. Sheffield’s branch in Kilner Way Retail Park off Halifax Road, which opened its doors in 2019, will become a large Tesco, while the Jack’s store in Barnsley is set to close.

Musical Memories
The Musical Memories at the Venue last week was a huge success with the fantastic Oliver Harris.
Guest, Gloria, said "Thanks so much for a lovely afternoon. Oliver Harris has the most beautiful voice and sang songs by Elvis Presley, Meat Loaf and Roy Orbison. We had such a good time and so did Oliver - he was full of fun which made our afternoon so much fun"... PCSO's Ellie & Gareth also joined us with guests and Oliver Harris.
The event is held on the third Friday of every month and costs just £2 for tea/coffee and refreshments. There is no need to book - people can just turn up and be assured of a warm welcome. It is perfect for all ages, particularly the elderly, lonely and/or socially isolated. It is also 'dementia friendly' and therefore ideal for those living with dementia and other health conditions and their families/carers.

After missing previous visits due to Covid-19, the vast number of children attending the events far exceeded his expectations. During the two evenings, Santa estimates that he handed out over 3000 chocolate bars and a variety of sweets to children of all ages. The surplus chocolate bars and sweets were taken to the Sheffield S6 Foodbank by Wortley Club President Steven Patterson, for distribution to needy causes within the local community.

There is a Memorial Service and Appeal Launch for Stan Shaw at Sheffield Cathedral on Sunday 27 February at 4pm. The appeal is to create a lasting memorial to Stan and his work as part of the cutlery heritage of Sheffield. In 2003 Stan was made an honorary Freeman of the Company of Cutlers and received the British Empire Medal in 2017. He made knives for the Queen and US presidents; he made exhibition knives and everyday pocket knives.
Donations kindly made by the general public on these evenings, which are most welcome, will be Booking for the Memorial Service is essential - go subsequently distributed to local and needy causes, to https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/255137582377 such as the Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Santa is planning to attend again in December 2022, hoping to meet even more children and their families. He will provide dates, which will be advertised, nearer the time.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Annual Prize Presentation at the Golf Club Stocksbridge Golf Club celebrated its annual prize presentation event on 22 January. The Golf Club would normally host a more formal Dinner Dance in November, but with Covid restrictions a more modest event was held in the clubhouse. The evening doubled up for the 2020 competition winners because for that year Covid restrictions resulted in no prize presentation ceremony.
Chapeltown RBL finally returned to league action visiting Handsworth based Sheaf House. Legion goalkeeper Dan Siddall picked up and injury 10 minutes in to the action and had to be replaced by manager Adam Todd who was on the bench.
There was an excellent turn out to support the event, with many of the winners from both years present to receive their trophies. Steve Hill (pictured with Club Captain Alan Revill) was the overall Club Champion, winning the Jack Oxspring Trophy. Various competitions through the summer season are used to determine the Club Champion and Steve scored the most points in these events.
In bobbly conditions Legion attacked with Ben Stringer and Niall Smith down the left causing problems. Half an hour in, Mitch Savage found space in the area and was bundled over, which gave in form Morgan Cowell the chance from the penalty spot. Cowell sent the goalkeeper the wrong way for his 6th goal of the season.
Liana O'Sullivan retained her status, having won in 2020, as the Ladies Club Champion, winning the Ladies Champions Bowl. Liana's success was also down to scoring the most points in the competitions that counted. John Yeates, the Golf Club's President, presided over the evening event. John was keen to acknowledge the "hard work of the Greens and Clubhouse staff to keep the Golf Club going through a very challenging two years with the Covid pandemic." He said "the hard work has paid off and the Golf Club has come through the worst of the restrictions with a solid membership base and some ambitious plans going forward." John added that "in (his) many years of membership, the course had never been in as good a condition as it has been for the last 18 months or so."
Sheaf House 0-1 Chapeltown RBL
Alan Revill, the Gents Captain, also thanked the "members and staff for making (his) year as captain so enjoyable." A full list of the competition winners for 2020 and 2021, with photographs of those who attended the ceremony, will soon be available on the Golf Club's website: stocksbridgegolfclub.co.uk
During the second half Legion made several good chances but couldn’t apply the telling touch for a second. Marshalled strongly by Sam Beard and Dave Millen, the back 4 stood firm with Sheaf House only having one clear chance, a one on one which Todd saved with his feet. The win means Legion have now won their last 5 league games in their push for promotion.

Stocksbridge focus on play off opponents A chaotic turn of events within the Yorkshire League fixtures committee left Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby without a game again at the weekend. The original clash with Leeds Mods was cancelled after they seemingly withdrew from the league, only to be re-instated after the match was supposed to have been played. The club have confirmed this week’s home play-off match with York RI will go ahead, with a 2.15pm kick off. The next scheduled away league fixture is the trip to Thirsk on 12th February. A formal complaint has been lodged with the league authorities & Stocksbridge Rugby await the outcome. Meanwhile the Club’s Development XV took to the field at the weekend, in front of a sizeable crowd at Coal Pit Lane to entertain near neighbours Wortley RUFC. Although the visitors took the spoils with a narrow 15pts to 12pts victory, the home side played with plenty of enthusiasm & energy throughout the game. Tries by Steve Hawksworth & Luke Birch, with a Dan Burt conversion were not quite enough steal the game, hard working flanker Chris Wood was awarded the Charlesworth Landscapes Man of the Match with 2nd row men Curt Newton & Dale Charlesworth also impressing. The game was marred by a serious knee injury sustained by full back Alan Eckersley who will require surgery to repair a ruptured patella ligament. Everyone at the Club wishes the popular player a speedy recovery.

Steels gutsy performance spoiled by gusty winner Marske United took advantage of Stocksbridge Park Steels mistakes to win 2-1 Adam Boyes made the most of a defensive error in order to go clear on goal before finishing. Five minutes later, Stocksbridge were level when a free kick rebounded to Ross Goodwin in space who had the time to finish smartly. The wind got the winner for Marske as Ryan Catterick’s long ball went over everyone for Junior Mondal to finish into an empty net. The Seasiders had the better of the early moments as they showed why they were challenging at the top of the division. Ed Hall had to be alert to stop a Kevin Burgess header from a corner before making another impressive save from Jason Kennedy later on. Marske did get their goal though and frustratingly, it was given to them by the Steels defence. A Reece Fielding pass skewed very wide and right into the path of Boyes. The league’s top scorer didn’t need an extra invitation and he raced through before finishing past Hall to score his 40th goal of the season.
The Steels got their equaliser just five minutes later though. Sam Finlaw’s free kick was cleared right into the path of Goodwin. He was in plenty of space in the box and took the chance to fire it into the bottom corner as he scored his fourth goal in the North East. The second half started with much more fire and creativity from both sides. Captain Adam Wheatley got a free header from a corner but would be denied by another great save from Hall. At the other end, Josh Nodder did well to open his body up to get a curling shot off in the box but Catterick was equal to it. The save almost fell to the feet of Luke Mangham but it just had enough on it to get away from the striker. Marske’s goal will be another one that will be frustrating for the Steels to watch back. Catterick’s clearance bounced over everyone and Mondal managed to get a touch onto it to get the ball past Hall. This would leave a narrow angle for the former Forest Green man but he managed to finish it and give Marske the lead again.

After this, the Seasiders took charge of the game and looked more likely to get the next goal. Glen Butterworth had a few attempts which had they gone in would have been goal of the season contenders. Curtis Round and Craig Gott also had opportunities but they were either blocked or went wide. Stocksbridge did have the ball in the back of the net though. Finlaw’s free kick had the perfect delivery and Fielding was on hand to knock the ball into the back of the net. The linesman quickly had his flag up for the offside, though anyone of a Stocksbridge nature will insist that it was a definite goal. From there, Marske were able to close the game out and make sure that they got a crucial three points for their promotion battle. Next home game: Hebburn Town Saturday 5 Feb, 3pm KO

CHURCH SHOW ‘BOTTLE’ FOR GUTSY WIN Penistone Church 1-0 Bottesford Town
A report by Martin Webb Church hosted Bottesford at the DSM Memorial Ground on a very windy winter day. The match gave Church the chance of avenging their 3-0 defeat at Bottesford in September.
Bottesford kicked off 5 points behind Church. The wind played its part in disrupting play and conditions were dreadful. Any pass above head height held up or blew around unpredictably.
Half time PCFC 0 Bottesford 0 Church had the wind slightly in their favour for the second half. However, any ball down the right was destined to be hard to cross. The only goal of the game came shortly after the hour Goal 62 minutes.
Crampton & Moore
A long corner found Brett Lovell beyond the far post. His powerful header on goal was glanced over the keeper by Kieran Ryan from 4 yards.
