Storms cause HavoC

Storms brought snow, heavy rain and strong winds to Sheffield this weekend causing havoc for many as the River Don burst its banks in several places. A one-two punch of powerful windstorms left north Sheffield reeling. Storms Dudley and Eunice unloaded powerful winds and driving rain uprooting trees and flooding roads, parks, properties along its path.

Covid-19 restrictions ended early

Current Covid restrictions were due to expire in England on 24 March but the government announced it will be ending Covid rules a month early on 24th February.

In a speech given to the House of commons the prime minister Boris Johnson scrapped the remaining Covid legal restrictions in England and said he wanted to shift the onus from state mandates to personal responsibility.

The potent storms made their presence felt with flood warnings issued across Sheffield over the weekend. The Needles, a landmark attraction on the Isle of Wight in southern England, reported a wind gust of 122 mph Friday morning, which the U.K. Met Office preliminarily confirmed as the highest wind gust ever reported in England. For comparison, a Category 3 major hurricane in the Atlantic has winds ranging from 111 to 120 mph.

Under the Living with Covid plan, from Thursday, the legal requirement to self-isolate after testing positive for Covid will end, as well as free tests. Usdaw (retail sector union) general secretary Paddy Lillis said:

ernment. However, charging for tests will price out low-paid workers who are already struggling to make ends meet with food and fuel prices rising, energy bills soaring and real wages falling. This will be an additional cost that many cannot afford.” Small business owner Graham Cox said " "While it's difficult to have faith in anything Boris tells us these days, I think, on balance, it's the right thing to do. For the overwhelming majority, Omicron has mild symptoms and most people's immune systems can cope far better with Covid now. My only concern is some scientists are warning there's no guarantee the next variant will be mild like Omicron."

16-year-old from Deepcar reaches World snooker final Jake Crofts was runner-up, at the weekend in the 2022 World Snooker Federation Junior Championship following a 5-3 defeat to Anton Kazakov of the Ukraine at the Ding Junhui Snooker Academy in Sheffield, England. Held for the second time following the inaugural staging of the tournament won by China’s Gao Yang in 2020, the tournament saw over 60 of the world’s most promising junior talents battle it out for the title, with the promise of a two-year professional tour card on offer to the eventual champion. Jake, 16, from Deepcar, Sheffield was competing in his first international competition, having previously competed in national events on the English junior tours. After a number of group games and knockout rounds the final two commenced battle over 9 frames. The final itself would prove to be a hard fought affair, which saw the opening four frames shared as Kazakov top scored with a run of 56 in frame three, before Crofts claimed the next on the black to head into the interval all-square.

The match statistics favoured Kazakov however, who having enjoyed a significantly higher pot success rate and having potted a greater number of balls than his young opponent, would ultimately make the advantage tell by claiming three of the following four frames to secure the title and a place on the professional circuit from the start of the following season. Former Stocksbridge High School pupil, Jake, will now compete for a professional tour card in the WSF Championship. In a field of over 250 players from around the world battling it out for the second professional tour card on offer this week. Parents Andrew and Emma told Look Local “We are so proud of Jake’s achievements and how he has done so well so quickly.” Jake plays his snooker at Star Snooker Academy in Sheffield and has been coached for the last 5 years by Gary Baldrey.

Cllr Terry Fox: “We’ve got fantastic volunteers throughout the city. The pandemic has made it crystal clear

“This is particularly acute in areas of most need. In some parts of the city they have terrific numbers of volunteers, but in others there is a real shortage, especially so when compared with need. Obviously this affects the community support available. As such we will undertake a fundamental review of how support is being provided, and we will launch a new Post-Covid Community Fund – directing an extra £500,000 to those groups at the frontline of the city’s most in need places. “Ultimately this is about re-energising and supporting volunteers throughout the city, from here in Stocksbridge and across the city, whilst also giving an extra hand to those groups in the areas of most need”

Hospital waiting lists:

'Light at end of tunnel' moves further away Official figures suggest six million - or one in nine - people are stuck on NHS waiting lists, writes the BBC. After the government confirmed it would take at least two years to make a dent in the backlog. But what does the news mean for those who have already been waiting months to have their chronic health issues treated? Fitness coach Stacey Jacques, from Sheffield, was told she had fibroids in August 2021 and needed to have a full hysterectomy. Six months on she is still waiting and said the uncertainty of when she would get her operation was frustrating. "I am not at the top of the list because there are people still less fortunate

than I am who require surgery," she said. Ms Jacques said the pain had eased and she receives monthly injections to reduce the size of the fibroids. However, it has caused her to enter the menopause. "They are doing everything they can to make it as comfortable as possible for me," she said. The wait has also affected her career, making it difficult to take on new fitness clients. "I haven't been able to do what I've always done. I just don't know when I am going to be going off [for surgery]." She said she was trying to stay positive and understood the pressures faced by the NHS. "There's nothing that can be done, you just have to wait," she said.

Police discover drug dens in north Sheffield

Local News

Peak district acces to all More people living in deprived areas of Sheffield will be able to experience the benefits of the outdoors, thanks to funding achieved by the Peak District National Park Foundation. A series of health-boosting activities will be developed with communities in north east Sheffield as a result of the £8900 awarded by the South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw Green Social Prescribing Grants Programme.

Police have discovered a number of drug dens in a series of raids in Ecclesfield, Sheffield, writes Claire Lewis for the Sheffield Star. Cannabis plants worth £300,000 have been discovered during police raids in Sheffield. South Yorkshire Police said both properties had been converted to be used purely for the production of cannabis. Two men arrested over the raids have since been charged. South Yorkshire Police said: “This is organised crime which fuels violence and devastation in the community and we are committed to tackling it.”

Fire crew called out for ‘chip pan’ fire Two fire crews from Stocksbridge and Tankersley stations were called out to a premise on Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, Sheffield at 7:50pm (Saturday). The small fire involved a chip pan which had started accidentally. The crews left the scene at 10:05pm.

Community regeneration charity SOAR is working with the Foundation to pilot 'Peak Park Prescriptions' – aiming to remove barriers which prevent people in areas of high deprivation from visiting the National Park. It is hoped that the project will help to improve physical and mental health and general wellbeing by making it easier for people to explore the Peak District, supported by National Park rangers. SOAR, which provides services to improve health, wellbeing and employability, will work with communities to develop activities for rangers to deliver in the National Park. The project will also include transport and support for people to reach places served by public transport.

Foundation fundraising manager Sarah Slowther says: “We’re delighted to have been awarded this funding to pilot Green Social Prescribing. SOAR has an excellent track record in community engagement, health and wellbeing, which will help us to connect communities to the wellbeing benefits of nature.

Peak Park Prescriptions will be promoted by SOAR’s link workers, wellbeing coaches and across its broader health work with communities. It will also support staff, volunteers and participants to develop skills and confidence to lead walks in the National Park, providing a longer term legacy for the project.

“The range of activities offered will be developed with the community and may include mindfulness walks in the stunning National Park landscapes as well as map reading and navigation skills and practical conservation tasks, including tree planting or footpath restoration. We believe passionately in a National Park enjoyed and conserved by everyone. This project will enable us to improve wellbeing through connection to nature and build a greater understanding of the importance of the natural world for people, for climate and for wildlife.”

SOAR health services manager, Guy Weston, says: “We’re looking forward to working with the Peak District National Park Foundation to expand our health and wellbeing offer. We know that spending time in - and connecting with - nature makes us feel better and we’re fortunate to have a National Park on our doorstep. This project means we can do more to ensure equitable access to green space and to work with our community to understand the impact on physical and mental health.”

She adds: “A third of the city of Sheffield falls within the National Park boundary and Sheffield is known as the Outdoor City, yet not everyone feels welcome or confident enjoying the Peak District.

The project aims to broaden access to the National Park, reducing inequalities, improving physical and mental wellbeing and supporting recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

“There is much more work to be done in bringing the National Park to deprived communities in Sheffield.”

Volunteer Peter goes online with eBay to support St Luke’s Hospice IT was seeing for himself the standard of care St Luke’s Hospice offered when his wife Lynne was in the final stages of her fight again cancer that prompted Peter Bower to become one of the charity’s volunteers. Peter can be found every Thursday morning at the St Luke’s Donation Centre, where he is part of the St Luke’s retail section eBay team, sorting and categorising items that are likely to achieve a higher price online than they might in the charity’s shops. “The role is very interesting especially the variation in items that are actually donated and there is a great mixture of skills and experience amongst all the volunteers,” says 72-year-old Peter, who lives in Oughtibridge and has now been volunteering for four years. “The reason I do this is because of the wonderful care and support offered by such a fabulous organisation.”

It was after Lynne was diagnosed with terminal metastatic lung cancer that she was referred to the St Luke’s Community Team. “We found their approach and care to be wonderful and as well as listening, understanding and attempting to offer best possible solutions for pain relief, they developed a fabulous rapport with Lynne which quickly became a friendship and in a time of pain and isolation she looked forward to the St Luke’s visits,” Peter explains. “One huge opportunity was the chance to go to St Luke’s to have a proper bath, something that was impossible at home. “I was able to take Lynne to the Hospice and she was looked after by two wonderful ladies who helped her bath and made her more comfortable than she had been for weeks.”

patient at the St Luke’s In Patient Centre “They were able to make her much more comfortable than I could at home and I was so happy that she was receiving such a high level of care. “I have nothing but praise for the care and compassion she received and it is a great comfort to know that under the circumstances she received the best support she could have wished for and I will be forever grateful to everyone at St Luke’s for giving me that comfort.” Just a short while later Peter decided he wanted to give something back in recognition of all St Luke’s had done for him. “Lynne’s death was the most awful experience but St Luke’s was just a wonderful support,” he says.

As her condition worsened, Lynne eventually became a

The memorial service will be led by the Reverend Canon Keith Farrow, Vice Dean & Canon Missioner at Sheffield Cathedral and will feature hymns and readings chosen by Stan’s family. Special tributes will also be given by Stan’s 21-year-old granddaughter Georgia and by Professor Geoff Tweedale who wrote the book: “Stan

After the formal service, the “Stan Shaw Memorial Appeal” will take place, which is aimed at raising funds for a permanent, public memorial to the last of the “Little Mesters.” Former Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Anne Murphy, chairs the appeal: “We don’t want to lose Stan’s valuable contribution to our city and his unique story of excellence in manufacturing, so we want to honour Stan with a permanent, public memorial to him and his skills as the last of the ‘Little Mesters.’” Ideas include a series of plaques dedicated to Stan as well as artworks and a

Chess and other games are also available. Everyone gets a warm welcome and it beats staying in the house being bored, there is lots of banter and laughter. For the active we offer a choice of Badminton or Table Tennis or other sports, we throw in an occasional game of indoor curling or soft bowls target and boccia. It’s a great way to try new activities or return to sports people did in their younger days Organiser Mark Hible said “I would thoroughly recommend coming along, the first session is free, then its £1 a week after that, free refreshments are included.” Sessions run every Monday afternoon excluding Public Holidays from 1-30 to 3-30 at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre, Moorlands Drive Sporting Chance is part of the Volunteering Matters Charity, we also run sessions in Shiregreen, Firth Park, Rotherham and Athersley

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

After two years, Covid-19 is still causing significant short and longer-term illness, hospitalisation and deaths and huge disruption to healthcare, the economy and education.

I have been working closely with the Upper Don Arts Community (UDAC), who are a beacon organisation for the arts in the Stockbridge area, mentoring them to nominate The Venue as an Asset of Community Benefit on behalf of the people of Stocksbridge. This means that should the current owners decide to sell, they would have to give six months’ notice of this intention and the local community would have the chance to bid for the building, possibly through a community purchase initiative, in order to secure its future.

Fortunately, young children are generally at lower risk of serious illness from Covid-19 but vaccinating as many people as possible, including children and young people - along with other protective measures such as mask wearing and isolation when infected - will reduce the spread of infection, meaning fewer absences from educational settings and workplaces and bringing us closer to 'living As someone with a background in the arts and with Covid' sustainably. education who supports the work of UDAC, and as a director of a community benefit society which We would ask people not to contact their GPs just went through a similar process a few years ago, I yet while we wait for further details, from NHS feel sure that this nomination is an essential step England, on how these vaccines will be given to forwards in ensuring that local people will have children and meanwhile we encourage adults to control over the future of a building which provides get their boosters and older children and teenagers all sectors of the community with a welcoming and to take the opportunity of half-term to get their inclusive creative and social focus. first or second doses Dr Penny Toff, chair of the BMA I am pleased to say that this approach of registering The Venue as an Asset of Community Value has been endorsed and approved by both the STEP The Venue Under Threat board and by Stocksbridge Town Council. Yemen’s forgotten crisis Dear Editor, There’s a growing conflict and humanitarian emergency in Yemen that’s been largely forgotten by the world. Families are living in a silent crisis and more than four million people have lost their homes. Families seeking refuge have been uprooted, often more than once, by shifting frontlines in a civil war that’s dominated the country since 2014. They’ve had to leave behind homes, livelihoods, possessions and loved ones.

Families are living in makeshift shelters made of sticks, palm branches, rags and anything they can find. Some fear heavy Spring rains could trigger a repeat of the flash flooding seen in 2020 and 2021 – against a backdrop of coronavirus and the spread of diseases like cholera and malaria. Camps are overcrowded, which means diseases spread quickly. At disaster relief charity, ShelterBox, we’re about to start distributing emergency shelter in Yemen. The water filters, mosquito nets, kitchen sets, soap, and wash basins we’ll provide will help families protect themselves from diseases. Tents will provide shelter for those sleeping in the open and tarpaulins and ropes will help families living in makeshift shelters make them more resilient to the weather. It's possible thanks to our supporters. To find out about our Yemen Appeal please visit the ShelterBox website - shelterbox.org. Lucy Greenwell ShelterBox

Students at Barnsley College had the opportunity to meet Jamie Campbell, the inspiration behind sell-out West End show and BAFTA-winning movie, ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’. Jamie, and a panel of other speakers, were invited into College as part of Pride Week, a College-wide initiative to raise awareness of the LGBTQIA+ community during LGBT History Month. Students were invited to watch the screening of ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’, followed by a Q&A with the inspiration himself.

Students quizzed Jamie on a range of topics from style and his experiences at school, to his biggest achievements and career goals. Jamie discussed his plans for the future, including his hopes to release a fashion brand and book. Jamie said: “I have really enjoyed meeting all the fabulous students today – they’ve all been really amazing and I’ve just loved it. It’s been nice coming back to education as that wasn’t really the best time for me, so it’s great to meet new students and see how they are.

In front of 22,000 fans Brook, 35, stopped his bitter rival Amir Khan in 6th round of a much anticipated fight. Kell Brook is born and trained in Sheffield at Ingles Gym in Wincobank, he first stepped foot inside the converted St. Thomas church, as a 10 year old. Following in the footsteps of first, Herol ‘Bomber’ Graham, and then World Champions Johnny Nelson, Junior Witter and Prince ‘Naseem’ Ahmed all ‘schooled’ from an early age at the now ‘famed’ Ingle’s Gym in Wincobank. The 35 year old father of three, showed great timing and power to ‘completely’ outclass his more prominent opponent Amir Khan. The thrilling encounter might mark the end of both men's fighting careers, with Brook admitting that, although he felt he was back in top form, retirement was on his mind.

Storms beat Stocksbridge Rugby Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby were once again left kicking their heels over the weekend when the storms left the Coal Pit Lane pitch under water & unplayable ! The lack of actual playing time is cause for concern amongst the coaching staff as they strive to keep the squad focussed & ready for their participation in the Yorkshire Division 4 play off series. Fixtures will be re-arranged however, the 1st XV are now beginning to run out of available dates for replays, whilst still

awaiting the league to rule on the abandoned home game against York RI recently. Skipper Adam Roles-Middlehurst said ‘it’s very frustrating from a lack of game time perspective’, before adding ‘I guess it’s the same for our opponents too, so whoever gets back on the horse fastest will have an advantage’. This weekend the 1st XV are in action away at Thirsk Rugby, in a re-arranged round 2 fixture from earlier this Month, they travel to York the weekend after to face old foes Nestle Rowntree. The

next home game is the scheduled round 4 clash with Thirsk Rugby on 12th Mar, when the kick off will return to 3pm as the daylight hours get longer. Stocksbridge will welcome back Ricky Rooney (knee), Sam Whittaker (leg) & Ryan Smith (knee) from their long term absences, with the ‘big rig’ Liam Roebuck also available to add some further bulk to the Stocksbridge pack. The Devs XV or ‘Lockers Legends’ also had their game called off at the weekend, & are now looking for further fixtures to give more

players more game time. Some of the colts players have been joining in with the 1st XV in recent training exercises & have shown up well according to Director of Rugby, Andy Tyers, ‘there’s some useful lads in our junior ranks, & it’s good to give them some exposure to the senior squad’, ‘we could potentially see one or two of these lad making their senior debuts before the end of the season,’ he added.

Steelers suffer Busy season shoot-out loss ahead for

Holder

SHEFFIELD stalwart Jack Holder is facing up to a busy season – but he admits he would like to be busier!

“I like the look of the Sheffield team and I can understand why fans are excited about it, I think we all are.” Meanwhile former favourite Kurtz has confirmed three more riders for his testimonial which is the first meeting of the Owlerton season. Wolverhampton duo Ryan Douglas and Nick Morris will appear and Tru Plant Tigers favourite Adam Ellis has also confirmed he will be in action. They join Holder, Brady Kurtz, Nicolai Klindt, Kyle Howarth, Tobiasz Musielak and Sam Masters who have already been unveiled. Todd Kurtz said: “It’s taking shape nicely and I’ll be heading over to England soon.

Holder is racing for Tigers and Polish League top flight club Torun with the new season just a few weeks away now. He will appear on the Todd Kurtz Testimonial at Owlerton on March 24 and will do some testing in Poland. But rules in the Polish League state riders can only race in one other league which means Holder is restricted to the amount of meetings he can do. “I’ll be busy, but not as busy as I’d like to be because we can only do the two leagues,” he said. “I’m hoping to do some testing in mid-March over in Poland and then get going in England with Sheffield.

“I’m looking forward to it, who would have believed it would take two years to rearrange my meeting when Covid first arrived on the scene? “The line-up is great so far and hopefully I’ll have some more names to announce real soon. “I want it to be a great night for the fans to enjoy too, I want them to go away feeling they’ve had value for money and we’ll work hard to ensure that happens.” All sponsorship and ticket details are available by email tktestimonial@outlook.com in the first instance.

By Kieron Tomkins

On a Sunday night at the Utilita Sheffield Arena, the Steelers and Cardiff Devils couldn’t be separated over four periods of drawn hockey, but the Devils took the two points back to Wales after winning the resulting shoot out.

The Steelers went into the 4pm face-off game with the same squad which came out successful on the previous night in Altrincham against the Manchester Storm. Another shout out goes to the Storm fan that fell ill, resulting in the game being abandoned, but it was good to hear some good news that the indi-

vidual was able to leave emergency care later that night. At the game in Sheffield neither team could find the game winning goal in overtime and the game went into penalty shots. Unfortunately for the Steelers, Big John Armstrong was the only man able to find the back of Carruth’s net, whilst both Reid and Cox found the back of Brust’s net and the Welsh outfit skated away with the two points.
