‘ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN’ Residents ‘fight’ against proposals to build 41 new homes
A concerned resident claims he has to ‘slalom’ his way through road signs on the footpath where he lives and fears the current situation is a disaster waiting to happen. Mr Hinchey is worried the junction is so busy where Armitage Road meets Wood Royd that is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident. He cites that the area is busy with school children making their way to and from school and being on a busy bus route where buses often have to mount the kerb to get round the corner on the junction. He also claims visibility is not the best due to the close proximity to the brow of a hill and the number of parked cars. Now barriers are preventing pedestrians from using one side of the road and the other footpath blocked by parked cars. To make matters worse there is also a planning application submitted to build 41 new
homes on fields just off Wood Royd Road with a new junction proposed adding to the volume of traffic and congestion. At a local town council meeting one resident told the meeting that her house vibrates when a bus passes, so much so, that many of her pictures in the house are lop-sided. Lewis Chinchen, local councillor was present at a well attended Stocksbridge Town council meeting last Thursday told Look Local “…the meeting was well attended by residents and I support the objections raised by them, especially the increase pressure on the roads, flood risks, tarmaccing over a Greenfield sites will only increase surface water issues. Greenfield sites should be valued to the community. The negative impacts of the development in my opinion far outweigh any benefits brought by it and I’ll be doing everything I can to stop the development going ahead.”

Woman denies hosting covid rule-breaking mass rave
17th March 2022
www.looklocal.org.uk
SCHOOL GETS RECORD RESULTS Royd Nursery Infant School is delighted to be celebrating an outstanding set of Phonics Screening Check results. The school has beaten its previous record result of 87%, with a staggering 88% of children achieving the pass rate this time around. The Phonics Screening Check tests children’s skills at word reading where they are asked to read (decode) 40 words.
A woman found guilty in her absence of holding an alleged rave during lockdown has had the decision overturned, writes the BBC. Sunny-Jo Veasey appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court to appeal for the verdict to be rescinded claiming she did not know the case had happened. The 27-year-old, of Aire Close, Chapeltown, Sheffield, pleaded not guilty to holding or being involved in a gathering of more than 30 people indoors in a Tier 4 area in 2021. The case was adjourned until 20 May. Ms Veasey applied to the court on Monday with a statutory declaration, claiming she was unaware of the case. District Judge Tim Spruce accepted the declaration and said "the original penalties are now quashed".
Local News
Mr Sly, Deputy Headteacher, commented “This is a superb set of results. What makes it an even more remarkable achievement is the children sitting this test have previously missed a large part of face to face learning due to schools being partially closed as a result of coronavirus. Credit has to go to the staff, parents and children that attend Royd Nursery Infant School. The school offered a really strong remote learning package when it faced partial
closures as a result of the pandemic. Staff delivered high quality online lessons that were well attended and parent feedback spoke glowingly of the package that was offered”. The result means that Royd Nursery Infant School is one of the top performing schools in Sheffield. Miss Jones, Executive Headteacher of both Royd Nursery Infant School and Deepcar St John’s CE Junior School commented “I am really proud of the Royd community. Reading has so many benefits. Sadly, national statistics show that one in five children in England cannot read well by the age of 11. Children are less able to learn about other subjects if they do not develop sufficient reading skills by the middle of primary school. We were obviously keen to address the impact that coronavirus had on our children’s reading”. Royd did not just stop there.
Royd’s successful phonics and reading has gone unnoticed. Head Teacher Mr Sly, also provides his expertise in teaching reading and supporting other schools in the South Yorkshire and Derbyshire
areas. As part of this role, Mr Sly helps other schools to provide excellent teaching in phonics, early reading and early language.

The pupils were that enthusiastic about helping the environment they got in touch with Sheffield City Councils Community Forestry Team and with their support; planted 6 new trees on the field. GARDEN
Neighbourhood says ‘yes’ to community garden with petition
A petition has been started by a local community to ‘leave land alone’ adjacent to the garden of a property after Sheffield City Council received a complaint. Steve, 60 & Linda Raven, 55, have lived in Oughtibridge since May 2016, were left devastated when they were told by SCC they had received an anonymous complaint and told they cannot have anything planted in a communal area, adjacent to the property. The property in question, 98 Crag View Crescent, Oughtibridge, reportedly received numerous complaints from one resident about the size, and subsequently received visits from Council officials. Causing distress and anxiety to both Steve and Linda. A neighbour, Ellie Judge has started a petition said
“No one else has complained about this and we see this garden as a community garden not a communal garden. The surrounding neighbours of 98 Crag View Crescent often walk by and smile at the beautiful flowers and plant their own little bulbs etc to it . My grandson and I added a strawberry plant last year and when he visited me we go down and take a look see how it has grown. A great amount of time and effort and cost has gone into maintaining the garden by Linda and Steve who are a blessing to this neighbourhood with the knowledge of plants and often handing out seedlings so people can also enjoy the natural world in there garden too. When we were in lock-down it was a place to go and reflect
amongst the flowers and quirky little signs others had left reaching out to the community without been together due to restrictions.
The PELISTAD Study is a study in children 6 to 11 years old with and without atopic dermatitis. Children with atopic dermatitis receive the study medicine.
Researchers will compare the skin of a child with atopic dermatitis who is taking the study medicine to the skin of a child without atopic dermatitis. The study is actively recruiting children without atopic dermatitis, any skin conditions or any other chronic medical conditions.
Healthy volunteers aged 6-11 years old needed.
“…the community in Oughtibridge are as devastated as ourselves as all the bad news we are seeing around the world and during lockdown had brightened folks spirits, if this has to go it would be a real shame not only for the community but the wildlife…”

In the short term, I believe that much stronger punishment is required for those found guilty of these offences, maybe a custodial sentence for a second offence - the punishment has to be strong enough to act as a deterrent. And in the longer term, as it appears that Raptors and Grouse shooting cannot co-exist (and I doubt grouse shooting will ever be banned), perhaps a collaboration between the authorities (RSPB, etc.) and the landowners to allow birds of prey, but perhaps in controlled numbers - some is better than none.
Whatever happens, the current situation cannot continue, it is a blight on our otherwise beautiful national park and an embarrassment for the landowners, and the National Trust. Yours faithfully,

Golfers back in action After the storms and heavy rain of the last few weeks, Stocksbridge golfers have enjoyed some better weather conditions in early March. The chance to get out on the course and play golf has been a big bonus for many members, keen to keep their swing going. Despite the previous heavy rains, the course is holding up well and the greens are in very good condition for this time of year. On Sunday 6th March there was a Pro's Prize 9-hole challenge, with Andrew Taylor (9) winning by a clear margin with 22 points. Martin Evans (12) was second with 19 points, ahead of a small group on 18 points. Ian Hulbert (6), Alec Cowling (9) and Joe Marsh (10) made up that group, with Ian taking 3rd place on countback. On the 10th March there was another 9-hole Pro's Prize, this time
win by Neil Elliott (6), with a very impressive 23 points. Over the 9 holes Neil played to one over par gross, finishing in style with a birdie 3 on the last hole. Three players came in with 22 points, with Eddie Smith (11), taking second place and Rob Betts (6) taking third on countback. Malcolm Ingles (9) was unlucky to be pushed into fourth place. On Saturday the 12th March, the Gents Winter Cup resumed with Round 13 attracting a goodsized field. Lee Bowling (17) won this round with an excellent 42 points. Lee's round included two birdies on the 4th and 11th and the rest of his round was very steady. Brian Dobb (16), finished one point behind Lee for second place. Gary McLoughlin (28) and Eric Wilkinson (9) both finished with 38 points, but Gary took
Savage fires Legion to victory It was first vs second at St Georges Park on Sunday as Chapeltown RBL hosted Red Lion.

third place on countback. Phil Beaumont (21), the overall leader in the Winter Cup, added to his competition lead with a steady 35 points.
Within 5 minutes Legion took the lead as Denham Saxton was this time brought down in the area as he was about to shoot, with Savage finding the top corner from the spot before half time.
On Sunday the 13th March, there was a Pro's Prize Stableford, which was won by Brian Dobb (16) with 40 points. Pete Westhead (9) was second with 38 points and Nasser Hassan (19) third with 35 points.
Legion started the second half with more intent as Jed Phillips lead the line and soon extended the lead when Jacob Walkland’s marauding run ended with a cross for Joe Moorhouse to apply the finish in the area. Mitch Savage then completed his hat trick with a thunderbolt from 30 yards beating the keeper all ends up after 70 minutes. The scoring was complete when super sub Morgan Cowell’s crossfield ball sent Niall Smith racing clear to lift over the keeper late on.
Kurtz steps up plans for big night Kurtz, a league winner with Sheffield back in 2017, is staging his testimonial which will also now double up as a farewell meeting as he’s taken a full-time job in his home country away from the sport. And he’s going out in style with a star-studded field on Thursday March 24 – including two world champions. Chris Holder, champion in 2012, is joined by Jason Doyle who won the title in Melbourne in 2017. Three of this year’s Sheffield side are also included with skipper Kyle Howarth racing alongside Jack Holder and Tobiasz Musielak. Said Kurtz: “I’m getting really excited for the meeting now and I want to thank all the riders who have accepted my invitation to do it. I’m really pleased with it. “It’s hard work putting a meeting like this together but at Sheffield they’re great people who are doing everything they can to help me out. “I think the line-up is exciting for the fans and I want them to go away thinking they’ve had a great night of entertainment. “It’s getting closer and I’m really looking forward to it, Sheffield is a great track and I’m sure all the boys will enjoy racing there. “I hope all the Sheffield fans will come along and enjoy the occasion.”
Kurtz is producing a souvenir programme for the day which will be a collectable issue including a laminated gloss cover and bond racecard. It will include images from throughout his career and contributions from various riders, promoters and journalists. For those not able to attend on the day the programme will also be available on line from the publishers next for delivery to your door at curtis-sport.com – it will probably be on sale from Wednesday March 23. Sheffield will host an individual meeting of their own the following Thursday March 31 with all seven Tigers riders in action plus several riders from other clubs. Tigers bosses considered the Northern Riders Championship, the popular old traditional event, but this restricted their choice of riders. The Steel City Championship is free for season ticket holders as the club look to offer supporters value for money.

Church looked second best for much of the first half and by conceding 3 goals the damage was done. They suffered their first defeat in 10 matches. Church recovered some pride in the second half and showed what they were capable of. Grimsby are a very well organised, skilful side and were deserved winners.

Manager Steve Lenthall “I was hugely disappointed today with the result, losing three-nil at Grimsby Borough. We knew going in to the game that Grimsby would be a big threat, they’re top of the league for a reason. Credit to Grimsby you can see why they’re top of the league, they play some great football, they’ve got lots of energy and they’re a threat going forward.” Forthcoming ture:

Impressive in defeat Stocksbridge 18-35 Thirsk
League leaders and title favourites Thirsk Rugby rolled into Coal Pit Lane at the weekend looking to complete a play off double against struggling Stocksbridge Rugby, but they were met by a resolute and determined home side, who continue to improve, and the visitors were made to work hard before eventually gaining a 35pts to 18pts victory. The Goodlad Contracting Man of the Match award went to Ricky ‘Rooney’ James for his brace of tries, accurate line out throwing and three big turnovers, Newton, Rowett, Bowskill and Ben Tyers all performed well in a creditable all round team effort. Reflecting on the performance, skipper Adam Roles-Middlehurst was full of
praise for his charges ‘ really pleased with the effort and attitude of all the team, and this is another game we could have won with our set piece dominance’ before adding ‘a full bench would have made a big difference, but we remain confident of our progression and improvement’. Stocksbridge make the trip to Leeds this weekend to meet with Leeds Medics and Dentists in the next round of the Yorkshire Division 4 Premiership play off series, before entertaining Nestle Rowntree at Coal Pit Lane on 26th March, with a 3pm kick off. The 1st XV would like to congratulate Reece ‘diesel’ Aspin and wife Lauren, on the announcement of a baby due Photo taken by: Pete Revitt later this Year.
Steels draw a blank Bridlington 0-0 Stocksbridge PS

The Steels have had two last-minute winners against Worksop Town and Pontefract Collieries as well as winning a seven goal thriller against Lincoln United. There are just two more home games left in the season, this Saturday’s coming game against Cleethorpes Town (Official) and then the final home match against Dunston UTS F.C. on the 2nd April. Tickets are available at the gate £8 for adults, £5 for concessions and £3 for teenagers. It is free for U12s accompanied by an adult.

Match report by Adam Allcroft Stocksbridge Park Steels will be left ruing missed chances after drawing 0-0 with Bridlington Town. The first half was not one the Northern Premier League are going to use as an advert for the league. The first shot on target went to Bridlington as Danny Earl went clear but his shot was saved at the near post by Mikey Roxburgh. Josh Nodder also tried an attempt after finding some space but he hit that over.
“We’ve seen some fantastic support over the last year and we want to cap it off with some of the best attendances of the season. Whether you’ve been a regular here or if it’s going to be your first time, we’d love to see you here!” Next Home Game: Saturday 19 March, vs CLEETHORPES, KO 3pm

Unbiased vehicle testing for over 40 years. Need we say more?
The last chance of the game would go to Stocksbridge. The ball bounced in the Bridlington bounce and Reece Fielding allowed it to go around his body before volleying it goalwards. He was hoping for a repeat of his last minute heroics against Worksop Town but Hitchcock was equal to it again, making sure neither side would get a goal in this game.

Steels Chairman Graham Furness has called on locals to come support the team in the final two home games of the season. The Steels are coming to the end of the season and are currently sitting in 8th place in the The Pitching-In Northern Premier League Div One East, with just six games to play.
