THE FULL MONTY TV SERIES ANNOUNCED WITH FULL CAST LIST AS DISNEY PRODUCTION BEGINS IN SHEFFIELD

Production has started in Sheffield this week. The Full Monty is set to be revived as a new TV series 25 years after the release of the BAFTA-winning film. Set in Sheffield, the gritty and heart-warming comedy followed the story of a group of unemployed steelworkers trying to earn some extra cash as strippers. The new series will catch up with the performers as the men continue to navigate life in post-industrial Sheffield. And the eight-part comedy will "explore the brighter, sillier and more humane way" communal effort can triumph over adversity, according to Disney. Returning to our screens, Robert Carlyle, Tom Wilkinson, Mark Addy, Hugo Speer, Paul Barber, Steve Huison, Wim Snape, and Lesley Sharp will all reprise their iconic roles.

Garden to remain part of community A small piece of land at the side of a property in north Sheffield is to remain, and ‘become’ a community garden after local residents showed their support to the couple who have tended the land for many years. A petition was started by Oughtibridge residents to leave land adjacent to the garden of a property alone after Sheffield City Council received a complaint. Steve, 60 & Linda Raven, 55, have lived in Oughtibridge since May 2016, were left devastated when they were told SCC had received an anonymous complaint and told they cannot have anything planted in a communal area, adjacent to the property. The property in question, 98 Crag View Crescent, Oughtibridge, reportedly received numerous complaints from one resident about the size, and subsequently received visits from Council officials. Causing distress and anxiety to both Steve and Linda. The Council however are now hoping to turn it into a commu-

nity garden and to arrange volunteers to keep it looking tidy and hope to get funding for the upkeep. A relieved Linda Raven told Look Local “It's going to take time but it will help the tenants in the area that are disabled including the disabilities we have ourselves, the support we have had from Oughtibridge and surrounding areas have been outstanding as well as the great support from our local councillors, Journalists etc, We have a lot of overgrown brambles and nettles that have been left for years as the Council have neglected it, but now if its turned to a community garden it can be made a beautiful site and not an eyesore, the area that we can carry on tending to is going to be spectacular this coming year with wildflowers. We are arranging with neighbours to celebrate Queens Jubilee in the area which will bring people together as a community. “

£300k of drugs found by police in Hillsboro’ £300,000 cannabis farm uncovered in Hillsborough, Sheffield - as police issue warning to landlords Police in Sheffield have unearthed a cannabis farm worth an estimated £300,000. Officers in Hillsborough revealed on Thursday how they had dismantled the drugs den and recovered the plants, some of which were sent for testing. They said the electrics were badly bypassed, and the electricity firm had to go to ‘great lengths’ to dig up and make them safe. “You may not be aware but the landlord will receive a hefty

bill to reconnect before being able to rent out the property,” they added. “It’s really worth being careful and vigilant if you rent out. Those landlords that are complicit can expect some focus by this team.” The Sheffield North West Neighbourhood Policing Team said the latest drugs find took the total value of the cannabis it had recovered to well over £6 million. Nobody was in the property when it was raided but police said forensics officers had scoured the premises for evidence which ‘might point to a suspect’.

Funicular plans dropped Proposals for a funicular railway to link a South Yorkshire town's main street and nearby shopping centre have been dropped, writes the BBC. The 27-metre track would have connected Stocksbridge's Manchester Road with the Fox Valley centre.

However, problems securing sections of land meant the plan, part of the £24m Stocksbridge Town Deal, will not go ahead. A Towns Fund Board spokesperson said other options were being examined. The body, which oversees projects for potential funding, halted plans for the lift between a site at Liberty Steel and the town's High Street due to the time it would have taken to resolve problems with land issues. The spokesperson added: "A number of options to create an accessible link were considered and an incline lift was the most practical solution which would definitely have created a point of difference for the town. "Unfortunately, this element of the wider plans for the town centre has now been withdrawn from the Town's Fund bid because of the complexities around securing the land needed to deliver the project within the timescales," they told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS). The spokesperson added that an alternative parking scheme may still be looked at in the future.

UPDATED PLANS TO BE UNVEILED TRANSFORMING THE HEART OF STOCKSBRIDGE Ambitious plans to transform dated shop fronts on Manchester Road in Stocksbridge will be unveiled later this month – as part of the town’s £24.1m Town’s Fund investment. The Manchester Road area has already been identified as a key location for investment to drive the local economy, with plans for an attractive new placemaking scheme as well as a brand-new Library and Community Hub. Now the Town’s Fund Board are consulting with local businesses – both tenants and landlords - on new proposals to improve the look of the whole area with a major investment in the transformation of town centre shop fronts. An invited business session is being held on Thursday 31st March followed up by an open drop-in session for members of the public to view the latest plans on Saturday April 2nd at Stocksbridge Library from 10am-2pm. A spokeswoman for the Town’s Fund Board said: “We know that shop fronts have a huge and lasting impact on the look and feel of the area and give a lasting impression. “There are some really great local businesses on Manchester Road and we want to work together with them to really transform this part of the town. This element of the project will go hand in hand with the other improvements that we have planned for Manchester Road.” The latest version of the plans will be on display at Stocksbridge Library on April 2nd. As well as the Manchester Road projects the Town Investment Plan is also delivering upgraded cycling and walking trails and a major investment in sports and leisure facilities in the town as well as a community bus service and new adult education provision.

Four friends to embark on 3 peaks challenge Four friends who all attend the same gym in north Sheffield are going to attempt the National 3 peaks challenge, unaided, in a time of 20 hours or less. (good time is 24 hours) The ‘Fab Four’ who all 'work-out’ at Gymworx on Middlewood Road, are to take-on the challenge to raise money and awareness for The Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS). Graham Davidson’s daughter, Hallie, 9, was born with SWS. The syndrome is a neurological disorder marked by a distinctive portwine stain on the forehead, scalp, or around the eye. This stain is a birthmark caused by an overabundance of capillaries near the surface of the skin. Blood vessels on the same side of the brain as the stain may also be affected. SWS can cause severe brain damage and seizures. Glen Molineux, 33 works at PlusNet. Steve Wild, 39, works at Forgemasters Sturge-Weber syndrome: Hallie, 9, was born with and

John Walker, 44, Gymworx owner, who has been airlifted twice in the Air

Ambulance through rugby injuries, completes the intrepid four. The Four will be starting at 1200hrs on the 28th of June. The National 3 peaks is the ascent of Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis, including the driving between them in 24hours usually with a guide and transport provided. John told Look Local “We are attempting the challenge without a guide, and we are driving ourselves and are aiming to do it in under 20hrs! We are hoping to raise awareness for Sturge-Weber as Grahams daughter has the condition, I have had to use the air ambulance TWICE so are collecting for them too and we all have children so we also are donating to The Childrens Hospital.” Anyone wishing to donate to any of the three charities can do so on the following links. As part of SYP’s commitment to reduce crime and deter criminals they have rolled out property marking materials including SmartWater to the residents of Grenoside. SmartWater is a traceable liquid forensic marking system that is applied to items of value to identify thieves and deter theft. The liquid leaves a long lasting, unique identifier. When dry, the liquid is invisible to the naked eye, but it glows fluorescent yellow under ultra violet lamps and torches which are used by police. It can be used to protect property and deter thieves by being applied to high value items.

• Patrols by Sheffield City Council Sustainable Communities Officers (SCO’s) to provide additional eyes and ears in the community for us. • Our response teams and detective colleagues will continue to work hard by attending any incidents reported and to bring offenders to justice.” This scheme will be rollout out wider over the coming weeks. Sixth Formers go to Oxford

Barnsley Sixth Form College students had the opportunity to learn about life at a top university when they visited the University of Oxford. The trip enabled the students to engage in a number of university-level sessions including subject-specific Law and History of Music in Film sessions. A tour of the university was followed by a question and answer session with current students giving the group an insight into what it is like to study and live at Oxford. The students also took part in a session aimed at helping to develop their critical thinking skills.

uefa legacy With the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 coming to Sheffield this summer, Sheffield City Council has been working with partners across the city to deliver an exciting legacy programme that will benefit the city’s communities and bring opportunities in women’s football to all. The legacy programme was officially launched last May 2021 at Bramall Lane stadium, with the aim of at least 140 primary schools providing more opportunities for girls to play football, 50% more girls aged 5 to 16 having a recreational opportunity within five miles of their home and double the number of FA qualified female coaches and female referees in the city. As well as these legacy ambitions Sheffield is working to make football more accessible to all, regardless of age, gender, ability and background and has launched various sessions in partnership with Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA, Sheffield United Community Foundation, Sheffield Wednesday Football Club (SWFC) Community Programme, the city’s universities, FURD (Football Unites Racism Divides) and other community groups. Tickets to UEFA Women’s EURO England 2022 are officially on sale now with all fans of football, women’s sport and big events encouraged to get involved in what promises to be the biggest women’s sporting event in European history. • Tickets available for all fixtures at: uefa.com/ womenseuro/ticketing

The visit was organised by the College’s Academic Excellence Academy, which develops skills and provides opportunities for students who are applying to the UK's top universities and for early deadline courses such as Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Sciences. Student Alice Simmonds said: “The trip to Oxford was a great opportunity to speak to student ambassadors and learn about their experiences as university students. We also listened to some of the lecturers at Oxford who gave a taster in Law and Music which was very interesting. Overall, the trip helped me gain a better understanding of university life at Oxford and encouraged me to consider it as an option.”

Denise Jelly, Principal at Barnsley Sixth Form College, added: “The trip was a great opportunity for our students to visit the University of Oxford and find out what the university can offer and what it would be like to live and study in the city. We aim to transform lives and encouraging our students to strive for the very best is part of that.” Representatives from the University of Oxford also visited Barnsley Sixth Form College to deliver a talk to current and prospective students about applying to and studying at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Students and parents got an opportunity to

be inspired by a former University of Oxford student talking about their experiences and were able to ask questions about the admissions and interview process and the selection of colleges. For more information about any of the courses available to study at Barnsley Sixth Form College, visit www.barnsleysixthformcollege. ac.uk. Sheffield high streets set to receive £500k investment

Local businesses in ten areas across Sheffield are set to benefit from more than £500,000 investment in their high streets. Sheffield City Council has announced further areas, including Chapeltown which will be supported by its Economic Recovery Fund, an innovative grant set up in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic to support local high streets and hard-hit sectors. Project groups, led by businesses, councillors and community groups, have put forward ideas to increase footfall and encourage Sheffielders to explore their local high streets, as well as discover new areas of the city.

said: “Being part of this project has brought us all together and made us really think about the things that could make a difference here. We all have been hard hit and want to encourage people to shop locally across the area. It’s been hard work, but I hope people locally and beyond will come and see what we are about and support us.”

Dear Look Local,

Stuart was joined by friends and family – including his daughters Hannah Dyson-Sutton and Krysy Pomeroy at Snake Summit to plant sphagnum plugs on the slopes of Bleaklow with the Moors for the Future Partnership. In tough terrain, close to the Pennine Way, the team planted about 2400 individual plugs, each containing five species of sphagnum moss. They covered an area of two hectares – the size of about three football pitches – planting one plug every 2.5 square metres. The volunteers were also shown other restoration

work in the area, including types of mini-dam and revegetation work. Stuart made his donation through the Peak District National Park Foundation and, overall, his contribution will fund the planting of

20,000 sphagnum plugs over 20 hectares of moorland. The work is part of a wider project - Moor Water – in which Moors for the Future Partnership is working with Severn Trent and the National Trust to restore blanket bog and boost nature

across this important area of remote upper moorland. Sphagnum is a bog-building moss. By holding water for longer on the moors, it helps to improve water quality and lowers the risk of floods. As the moss grows, it traps carbon dioxide from the air and stores it as peat – a vital element in the fight against climate change. Stuart said: “I’d like to thank everyone at the Moors for the Future Partnership for their collective enthusiasm, knowledge and support for the hugely successful volunteer sphagnum planting day. We all learned so much...” Chris Dean, head of the Moors for the Future Partnership, added: “Stuart’s generous donation has contributed to our essential work on the moors of the Peak District and South Pennines...”

STEELS DRAW A BLANK Lincoln Utd 0-0 Stocksbridge PS

save to keep his clean sheet in tact. Not long after, Nodder had another opportunity after Crofts cut it back to him but that effort was drilled wide. This meant the game would be goalless going into the second half.

Thurlstone, and he made buttons in a mill at Midhope. He was one of the pioneers of the Co-operative movement locally. Hayward descendants were for many generations foremen of the umbrella department at Fox’s. Joseph died in 1901 and is buried in Bolsterstone churchyard. The umbrella frames passed through many stages, known as ‘shops’, and were put together by women in the old mill building under Hunshelf Bank.

In the 1840s, the steelworks at Stocks-

bridge began its life by wire-drawing, an important industry in this area and a skilled trade Samuel Fox had been apprenticed in. The wire was then put to good use in making things like needles, textile pins, umbrella frames (out of solid steel wire) and later crinolines – until they went out of fashion. But umbrellas are always needed and the invention by Samuel Fox’s colleague Joseph Hayward, the Paragon umbrella frame, made a name and fortune for Fox and enabled him to develop into heavy engineering. Hayward’s invention was to flatten the ribs and bend them into a U shape, which made them much more flexible yet strong and light, and this design was patented in 1852. Soon a shop in Fore Street in London, owned coincidentally by a Mr Thomas Fox, was selling Paragon umbrellas and it is still in business, while Fox’s of Croydon still make Paragon umbrellas – at a price. Paragon umbrellas are famous the world over. Hayward worked for Fox as a draughtsman, but also had other business interests; he invented another new type of umbrella frame called the Flexus, leaving Fox’s along with company secretary William Hoyland to manufacture it at Eckland Mill in

Many different designs were produced over the years. You can see references to umbrella making in Stocksbridge, such as the roof of Zorros café in Fox Valley. if you want to find out more, come and visit the Valley Museum on the

Stocksbridge Park Steels were unable to break through a stern Lincoln United defence as they drew 0-0 with the relegation strugglers. There was a lively start to the game. Steels set off quickly but it was Lincoln who stopped the initial rush and had the better of the first ten minutes. They had some early set pieces and one caused danger with Callum Foster heading it goalwards, but it was flicked over the bar, seemingly by another Lincoln player in a big turn of luck for the Steels. A big chance then went Stocksbridge’s way. Ben Partridge worked hard to get space on the right hand side, latching onto a good pass. Instead of shooting himself, he squared the ball to Nathaniel Crofts. The winger unfortunately hit the shot wide, though a flagging linesman did save his blushes. The big opportunities fell to Josh Nodder in the first half. A high ball came across to him and the winger followed the ball well to hit a volley that was as sweet as you like. It travelled well but Jack Steggles followed it well and made an impressive

ground floor of the Town Hall on Manchester Road – it is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 3.30pm every week, and is run by volunteers. There is lots to see, from the famous Bolsterstone glass and Midhope pottery to memorabilia of royal events, from church records to steel-making history. There are also resources you can use for family history research and a huge collection of old photos. You can also find a lot of resources on our website at Society | Stocksbridge & District History Society (stocksbridgehs.co.uk).

After Nodder had his opportunities at the end of the first half, the second half would start with Jake Park trying to have an impact for Lincoln. He first went clear on goal but thankfully the effort would head harmlessly over. A few minutes later, a cheeky backheel from Park put the ball teasingly across the six yard box but no other Lincoln player was there to tap it in. At the other end, Nodder had another effort which would go just wide. The closest Stocksbridge would go would be through Crofts. After the ball struggled to get past the Lincoln backline but the Whites failed to clear, the ball would eventually fall to the winger on the left. He cut in before hitting a daisy cutter of shot that went through everyone and would bang off the post before the Whites were able to clear it away. The game would end with a bit of drama. Lincoln had the better of the end of the game, notably when Louie Jarvis broke through on the right hand side before a poor finish which showed why he was a right back and not a striker, and were looking to score when Park fell on the edge of the box. Lincoln appealed for the penalty but nothing was given and that’d be the end of the game with both teams having to be happy with a point. Next Home game: Saturday 2 April, Dunston, 3pm KO

Church denied in late drama Toolstation NCEL Premier Division Garforth Town . ..... 1 Penistone Church . 1

Attendance – 432

(J Burgess 90+5) (E Newsome 90)

A report by Martin Webb On a perfect day for football, Garforth came into this match with five consecutive wins. They had beaten Church 4-1 in the league at the DSM Memorial Ground. Church had recently beaten Garforth 3-1 in the League Cup. Like many of their matches, Church were well supported for this last away league match of the season. A coach load of followers and many who had travelled independently really got behind their team. After a goalees first 80 minutes Church started to really press and a corner from the left caused chaos in the Garforth defence. A stabbed shot from 5 yards was saved and Garforth were straight down threatening the Church goal. The breathless pace continued with both teams attacking knowing a draw would not help either team's chances of getting to the play off. Goal 90 minutes A clearance from defence found Eddie Newsome in his own half. He drove into the Garforth half and passed to Keightley, his low cross found Newsome

on the right edge of the box. His thunderous shot found the top left corner of the net. Garforth 0 PCFC 1 Goal 90+5 minutes. A decent long range ball into the middle of the Church box was flicked past the despairing Chris Snaith in the middle of the goal by James Burgess with the last action of the match. Result Garforth 1 PCFC 1 Overall a draw was a fair result on the balance of play. However, both teams really needed to win to keep in the play-off chase. Manager Steve Lenthall “I’m gutted today, not just because of the result but also for the players, for the fans and everybody who is involved with Penistone. We had a game plan to make sure that they didn’t dominate the game and we set that out really well, we stopped their number nine, James Burgess, getting a lot of the ball and in the first half you could see that he was getting frustrated because he wasn’t getting the feed into him because Wayne Hughes and Brett Lovell defended well against him and our mid-field three were superb.”

The Sun Shines for Golfers Stocksbridge golfers have enjoyed a rare week of unbroken and warming sunshine. It has been a great week to end the winter season of competitions. There has been some excellent golf played as a result of the good weather and the course being in great condition for the time of year. The Dragons played the final round of their Winter Cup on 23 March and it was the Division 2 players who dominated the leader board. Alan Flack (27) scored an excellent 41 points to win, closely followed by Frank Hines (26) on 40 points. Bob Haythorne (17) from Division 1 was third with 38 points. The rest of the field was closely packed between 26 and 36 points, with recently appointed Dragons President,

Dennis Haley, enjoying a birdie 2 on the 17th hole. With the days drawing out, the mid-week Pro's Prize has now returned to an 18-hole competition. Craig Batty (5) won by a convincing margin with 43 points, a round that included 5 birdies, all on par 4 holes and three of them coming in the first 5 holes. Craig's gross score was a 2 under par and had nothing worse than one 5 on the 8th hole. It may well have been the round of the winter season at the Golf Club. Trevor Moseley (9) was a distant second, but with a highly credible 39 points and Cliff James (22) was third with 38 points. The Gents Winter Cup concluded on 26th March, with Eric Wilkinson (9) managing an even better stableford

score than Craig Batty's 43 points on Thursday. Eric won with 45 points in a round that included 2 birdies, 2 dropped shots and 14 pars. Glynn Stainforth (18) finished second with 42 points and there were three players on 40 points vying for third place. Ian Hulbert (12) nabbed third place on countback from Sandy Murphy (14) and Rob Betts (respectively. Sunday 27th March saw the Pro's Prize competed for with a surprisingly small field given the good weather. Ian Hulbert (12) continued a good weekend of form by winning with 42 points. Craig Batty (5) also continued a good week of form coming second with 39 points. Stuart Marsh (19) was third with 38 points.

Agonising home loss Stocksbridge 12 - 22 York

Another decent performance, in front of a sizeable crowd, in the Spring sunshine at Coal Pit Lane should have brought victory for Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby at the weekend, However, the rugby Gods were smiling on their visitors from York, Nestle Rowntree who were relieved to come away with a 22pts to 12pts victory in round 5 of the Yorkshire 4 Premier play offs. With clock tower Andy Beal, and mercurial centre Liam O’Leary absent through work commitments, Stocksbridge were dealt a further blow when ‘go-to’ back rower Pete Newton failed a late fitness test on his hamstring and was forced to withdraw from the squad. Young Jack ‘milky’ Martin was also recalled to the hooking berth as Mikey Hartley recovers from a shoulder injury. That man Frith, Ben Tyers and Callum Green were all restored to the pacey back division. Stocksbridge started well, and a succession of clever box kicks scrum half from Frith put the visitors under pressure, this was relieved when a series of penalties helped Nestle Rowntree up the pitch and eventually to a kickable penalty to take the lead. Stocksbridge, playing with enthusiasm and intent, roared back into the contest and a sweeping move through the backline was rewarded when skipper Adam Roles-Middlehurst, kindly sponsored by Mr M Taylor, jinxed his way past the last line of defence for a magnificent try in the corner.

The 1st XV make the trip to York RI next weekend, with the disappointing decision of having to replay the previously abandoned home fixture in January adding a bit of spice to the clash, before entertaining the students from Leeds Medics and Dentists in the next home fixture on 9th April. ‘The guys played with passion and good levels of intensity’ said the injured Pete Newton afterwards, adding ‘we just need a slice of luck to go our way, as this is another game we could so easily have won’. This was followed shortly after when more Stocksbridge pressure resulted in an attacking scrum, and a well worked, training ground move saw Frith dart one way, whilst No 8 Rowett, sponsored by Charlesworth Landscapes, scuttled off the base the other way with the ball, for another excellent score, this time close enough for the boot of Jack Spencer to add the extras. Rowntrees scored a breakaway try against the run of play, just before the interval to leave the half time score 12-8 in the homesides favor. The 2nd half was a bit nip and tuck with both sides enjoying some dominance and territory however, injuries to Rowett, Fletcher and Whitaker robbed the home side of forward bulk and the visitors scored another try when

the bounce of the rugby ball beat the home defence and fell perfectly for the gleeful chaser to gather and score. Nestle Rowntree were fortunate not to receive a yellow card on a couple of occasions and rode their luck again, with an intercept try as Stocksbridge opened play up looking for a score of their own. The final score of 12-22 flattered the visitors, and again left Stocksbridge wondering what they need to do to gain a victory in this tough play off series. The Mick Gribbins Man of the Match award was presented to Jack ‘milky’ Martin for a sterling all round performance as stand in hooker, Martin kindly sponsored by Asphalt Grid Systems, whilst Frith, Tyers and Green also showed up well.

chapeltown secure promotion Brinsworth Whitehill 2-3 Chapeltown RBL

Chapeltown RBL ran-out worthy winners in a top of the table clash at Phoenix Sports Ground. After an uneventful half an hour, Brinsworth took the lead from a set piece poking home from a knock down in the 6 yard box. Brinsworth then doubled the lead on 37 minutes with a similar goal.

and could have gone 3-1 ahead but for a smart one on one save by James Birch. Ben Stringer was causing problems down the left and his deep cross was met with a thunderous head from Jed Phillips on 87 minutes to equalise late on.

Two down at half time Legion made a double change with Joe Long and Adam Todd coming on along with a change in formation.

Legion hadn’t finished there though and were pushing for a winner, when Joe Long whipped in a wicked cross for Jed Phillips to climb highest again and find the top corner in the 92nd minute to send Legion top of the league with 3 games remaining.

5 minutes later Joe Long hit an unstoppable first time volley from the edge of the area to reduce the deficit.

The result yesterday also means that Chapeltown RBL have now secured promotion to Division One.

Legion played with much more intent, with Ash Gray and Harley Wilson getting on the ball. Brinsworth hit RBL on the break

Good news for the club is utility back Dan Burt has returned to training after suffering a fractured fibula, no date has yet been set on his return to 1st XV action. Also in action at the weekend were the Stocksbridge Development XV or ‘Lockers Legends’, and despite a spirited performance there were beaten by a strong Sheffield Oaks squad by 43pts to nil, young pup Cole StaleyHowson was the pick of the bunch to claim the Fox Catering player of the Day award. Tickets are selling fast for the Presentation Evening on Friday 13TH May, as popular speaker Jeff Probyn seems to be an attractive prospect. Tickets, priced at just £20 are available from Club Chairman Andy Bell (07877 584499) Book early to avoid disappointment.

TIGERS STUNNING WIN Belle Vue.........................44 Sheffield Tigers..............46

SHEFFIELD opened up their League Cup campaign with a thrilling last gasp win at Belle Vue. Going into the final heat Simon Stead’s men were two-points down and staring defeat in the face. But brilliant Tru Plant Tigers duo Adam Ellis and Jack Holder, who will be strongly fancied for the Premiership Pairs this season, rallied with a stunning 5-1 in the final heat to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in a Manchester thriller. Sheffield went into the meeting without their two high profile winter signings, Tobiasz Musielak and Craig Cook. Musielak has stayed in Poland for treatment on a knock he took at the weekend and is expected back soon and Cook has tested positive for Covid. Richie Worrall, a former Belle Vue man, was snapped up as a guest replacement and did a fine job with a 9+2 haul including two precious race wins. But it was the big scoring duo of Holder and Ellis who carried the team over the line with six race wins and 26-points between them. Worrall teamed up with Stefan Nielsen – back after horrific injuries – for a key 5-1 in Heat 12 but when Charles Wright and debutant Norick Blodorn edged out Tigers skipper Kyle Howarth in the penultimate race it gave the advantage back to the home side.

Tru Plant Tigers co-promoter Damien Bates said: “The day didn’t get off to the best of starts with the news about Craig and Toby missing out, but they boys have shown fantastic character.

Holder and Ellis duly kept their cool in a “Thankfully it doesn’t look too bad for both re-run to shut out Brady Kurtz and Charles boys and they’ll be back soon, but in the Wright to secure three group points.

meantime credit to the lads who did the business at Belle Vue. “It’s a great result to start the season and we look forward to welcoming everyone to Owlerton for the Steel City Championship on Thursday when I’m sure Holder and Ellis will take some stopping.”

BELLE VUE 44: Max Fricke 10+1, Charles Wright 10, Brady Kurtz 9+1, Tom Brennan 6, Jye Etheridge 4+1, Norick Blodorn 3+1, Jake Allen 2+1. SHEFFIELD 46: Jack Holder 13+1, Adam Ellis 13, Richie Worrall 9+2, Kyle Howarth 5, Stefan Nielsen 4+1, Connor Mountain 2+1, Craig Cook r/r.

Ladies outscore students

Youngsters help in big win Oughtibridge 5-1 Loughboro’ Students

Oughtibridge WM Women took an early grip of their East Midland Premier League game against Loughborough Students. They led 5-0 at the break with goals from youngsters Amber Zakhira and Emily Fowler plus another hat-trick for top scorer Millie Kenyon. After two long-range efforts had found the back of the net for Kenyon, she tried her luck with a 35 yard free-kick. The ball flew into the net for a first half treble. The Students came out after half time and showed why they got a point at leaders Northampton recently by taking the game to Oughtibridge and deservedly grabbed a consolation through Durkin. Bridge had their own chances but couldn’t put any more gloss on the win. This season has seen the emergence of a number of young players from the club’s Under 18s team (pictured) sponsored by the Purple Lobster Fish Bar, including keeper Mollie Hutchinson, midfielder Zakhira and forward Fowler, which augers well for the future.
