Giant Easter Witnesses cross lights up sought following North Sheffield serious assault in Chapeltown A giant Easter cross which last year was described as a ‘symbol of hope’ during the early days of the pandemic is shining over Stocksbridge once again.

The 20 foot tall illuminated cross at Green Moor, near Stocksbridge, has become a familiar sight at this time of year and can be seen from miles away at night. It has been shining across the valley for five decades but this year needed urgent improvements which were paid for by a grassroots fundraising appeal. The cross is managed by Churches Together in Stocksbridge & Deepcar, money will pay for replacement lights and a firmer base to secure it against the strong winds to which it is subjected at its lofty setting.

Full summer of live music returns to Square With the pandemic having put a stop to Leopold Square’s full summer of live music programme for the past two years, the city centre venue is delighted to be bringing it back between May and September this year.

An eclectic line-up of talented musicians playing soulful vibes, smooth jazz, swinging classics, and much more, will be performing between 2pm and 4.30pm every Saturday and Sunday. This year Leopold Square is adding Friday evenings in July and August when live music will ease guests into the weekend between 5pm and 7pm. A special Big Swing Event will be kicking off the summer programme on Sunday 1st May. There will be a DJ and swing dance class from 1pm, before the Ryan Taylor Organ Trio bring their rip-roaring and riotous jazz, swing and Latin grooves to get the live music going at 2pm. Another dance class takes place at 2.45pm and the band comes back for a final set at 3.15pm.

The Big Swing Event ends at 4pm, but the live entertainment doesn’t end there, as Cubana’s ever-popular Salsa in the Square takes over from 5pm. The following weekend, one of Sheffield’s longest running groove bands Montuno will be bringing their groove-driven Latin, funk and Nuyorican soul on Saturday 7th May. Jenny Smith is one of the slickest and most polished vocal performers in the North and will be entertaining visitors on Sunday 8th May. On Saturday 14th May, Sticky Pockets will be making their debut at Leopold Square. The 5-piece band bring Southern blues, Northern soul and a bit of everything in-between. Visitors will then be able to get their dancing shoes on when the everpopular What Katie Did Next are welcomed on Sunday 15th May. Dizzy Club will be getting visitors dancing on The Square’s terraces on Saturday 21st May, before The Washboard Resonators bring fresh energy to the sounds of the 1920s on Sunday 22nd May.

Sheffield student wins technology award A student from Sheffield has won a prestigious award that celebrates exceptional female talent. The winners of the 12th annual FDM everywoman in Technology Awards celebrate the industry’s most exceptional talent from the UK and beyond, and this year’s theme was People Purpose Planet. The winners span diverse backgrounds from academia, enterprise, and financial services, from talented students to high-performing entrepreneurs and CTOs. Lea Button, first-year Computer Science Student at The University of Sheffield won the ONE TO WATCH AWARD. Awarded to a girl aged 11-18 who is actively encouraging girls to study STEM subjects at school-level or making waves in the tech space. This award seeks to identify young

game-changers and is open to inspirational students.

Lea is particularly passionate about cybersecurity and achieved an A* in computer science A-level. Alongside her academic achievements, she is also passionate about supporting other young girls in exploring careers in technology and has created a scheme of work to introduce cybersecurity to girls at her secondary school. Lea told Look Local “The scheme of work I created for my secondary school was to introduce computer science and cybersecurity to girls in years 7 to 9. It involved weekly lessons and exercises, which followed the story of a dinosaur who was trying to keep a secret. Every week a new concept would be taught, for example the first week would introduce encryption: the girls would

learn about a simple Caesar cipher. In the exercises you would use this knowledge to discover the dinosaur’s secret. As the weeks progress the dinosaur gets better and better at hiding his secrets, as you learn more content. Currently I’m working on a Capture the Flag platform for my secondary school to use to be able to host their own cybersecurity competitions. Hopefully, this will be able to be used not only internally, but also externally to include other schools in the local area.

I’m extremely grateful to have won the award; it’s not only shown me that the work I’m doing is making a difference, but I also hope it’s inspired other young girls, particularly those younger than me to get into technology.”

Acting students visit plague village Barnsley College Performing Arts students prepared for their forthcoming performance of The Roses of Eyam by visiting the Derbyshire village to learn about its astonishing history. Visiting Eyam gave the students the opportunity to learn more about its story, connect to their characters on an emotional level and explore the parallels with our own modern-day experiences of Covid-19. They visited the Eyam Plague Museum, the church containing official village records, and the Cucklet Delph Open Amphitheatre. The students are bringing two showings of The Roses of Eyam to The Civic theatre in Barnsley on Wednesday 11 May, at 2.00pm and 7.30pm. The Roses of Eyam is the remarkable and true story of the Eyam residents who sacrificed their lives by remaining within the village to contain the spread of Bubonic Plague in 1665 and 1666. The play highlights the human tragedies and even comedies which took place as well as the courage of the villagers to carry out their act of self-sacrifice.

forming Arts Tutor at Barnsley College, said: “I first directed this play 15 years ago when the actors could only imagine what it would be like to live through a worldwide pandemic like the Bubonic Plague. Directing it now as we gradually come out of the Covid-19 pandemic, has been a fascinating process because myself and the student actors are able to relate to certain aspects of Eyam’s remarkable and brave story. Our audiences will be able to connect to many of the scenes in this moving true account.” Tickets are priced at £11.50 (adults) and £9.50 (concessions and students). They are available at: www.civicbarnsley.com For more information about Performing Arts courses at Barnsley College, visit www. barnsley.ac.uk/performing-arts, email info@barnsley.ac.uk or call 01226 216 123. New youth services strategy A new Community Youth Services Strategy that aims to “offer safe, creative, ambitious Community Youth Services where all young people in Sheffield can thrive” has been approved as part of the council’s commitment to delivering on its oneyear plan. The strategy outlines the council’s pledge to ‘support young people in Sheffield to develop and flourish’ and defines our strategic ambitions for Community Youth Services over the next three years. Young residents in Sheffield can expect to see an increase in open access youth sessions from one session to a minimum of three a week in their local area. They will be able to receive commu-

nity based informal education, support and guidance. The council wants to build on current youth work by having specialist youth workers who are ‘in touch’ with the needs of young Sheffield people. It is also committed to transforming youth facilities and equipment so that they are modern, safe and of interest to young people. There will be some focus on digital inclusivity so that young people can engage with peers online through safe gaming networks, podcasting and online youth clubs, when in person involvement isn’t possible. The focus will also be on organised cultural and leisure activities and trips across the city to broaden horizons and experiences.

TV presenter leads 70th anniversary celebrations TV presenter Julia Bradbury led a celebration to mark the Peak District’s 70th anniversary as the UK’s first national park. The event was organised by the Peak District National Park Foundation to mark the milestone anniversary and to thank individuals, businesses and organisations for their help raising vital funds for conservation and engagement projects. The celebration was held in the newly restored ballroom at the Buxton Crescent Hotel and Spa and highlighted the work and ambition of the Foundation, the Peak District National Park’s official charity. Julia spoke about her personal connection to the Peak District and outlined the importance of the Foundation. She told guests: “On 17th April 1951, the Peak District made history as the UK’s first national park. “Decades of campaigning for access and protection of our countryside led to the creation of National Parks and that passion and connection to the Peak District continues to grow. “The Peak District National Park Foundation is a registered charity, established to celebrate the 70th anniversary and support its future. The Foundation directs the love people have for the Peak District to the projects that have the greatest impact in achieving its vision of a National Park enjoyed and conserved by everyone, forever.” Guests included donors, funders, supporters, fundraisers, businesses – including the Foundation’s Peak Partners – and ambassadors, including the Earl and Countess of Burlington and Kelvin and Elizabeth Fletcher, of reality TV farming series Kelvin’s Big Farming Adventure. Projects funded by the Foundation were also represented. Since its launch in 2019, the Foundation has raised nearly £225,000 for conservation and nature connection. Chair of trustees, Jen Lowthrop, said: “The Peak District’s 70th anniversary as Britain’s original national park is a huge milestone. There’s a lot to be proud of, but still much more to do. “Together we can help combat climate change, support nature recovery, care for our heritage and habitats and ensure the national park is accessible and welcoming to all. Together we can all play our part to ensure the Peak District thrives for many generations to come.” The celebration event also marked the launch of the Foundation’s new campaign - Connect Recover Thrive - which aims to raise £500,000 to invest in nature recovery across the National Park for planet, people and wildlife. Jen went on: “The campaign reflects our ambition for people to Connect, Recover and Thrive by experiencing the joy of nature in our National Park. We will work to connect people from all backgrounds to nature, improve wellbeing through nature connection and continue to support thriving communities in and surrounding the Park. “It also reflects our ambition to join up habitats, to restore nature and create thriving landscapes - supporting an environment which contributes to the fight against climate change.” The Foundation’s fundraising and development manager, Sarah Slowther, added: “I’d like to thank everyone who joined us to celebrate 70 years of the Peak District National Park. It was amazing to speak to so many people who share our love of the Peak District and to highlight our projects. “We simply wouldn’t be where we are without our supporters. We’re grateful to all our donors, funders, Peak Partners and fundraisers. The National Park needs us just as much as we need it and we’re truly grateful for everyone’s support.

Bolsterstone Glass and the Glass House

In the late 17th century it became ‘The Pot House’ but in the mid 1600s it was the Glass House at Bate Green, on the fork of the roads, Pot House Lane and Whitwell Lane, in Stocksbridge. The early 16th century had seen a revolution in glass making in England after earlier Acts had been proclaimed by Elizabeth I, banning the importation of continental and Italian glassware and also a further Act banning the use of wood for fuel in glass making furnaces.

The Fox dynasty as far as the glass making is concerned must start with Ulysses Fox, Yeoman of Fulwood marrying Elizabeth Greene of Smallfield (just over the hill, south of Wigtwizzle). In their family, the first son William, born 1613 and the second son John Fox were both also living at Smallfield. It is noted by Hunter, the historian, that John Fox is producing glass in a furnace at Smallfield in the 1640s. His brother William has married Anne Morewood of Bradfield and they have a son George born 1643. It would seem that sometime around 1650, John could have moved his glass making operation to Bate Green. At first sight an unusual choice to build a furnace and start a glass making operation. But no, the Fox family were already employing an expert glassmaker, Richard Dixon from Shrewsbury who had married into the Henzey family, Huguenots, and had brought his skills to South Yorkshire and to the Fox family.

Thus started the production of Bolsterstone Glass, possibly the finest lead crystal glass tableware in England at the time and continued under the guidance of John Fox and later George Fox and his family for nearly 100 years until the death of Michael Fox and the subsequent purchase of the glass house by Richard Ellis of Midhope who converted it into a Pot House in the 1770s. Why ‘Bolsterstone Glass’? Probably because that was the nearest parish village, there was no Stocksbridge town or village in the 1750s We would be more than pleased to welcome you to view our collection and part of the Kenworthy collection from Sheffield Museums, any Tuesday or Thursday at the Stocksbridge History Museum in the Stocksbridge Town Hall.

The 16th century also saw an influx of Protestant Huguenot artisans and craftsmen fleeing persecution in France and Belgium, coming to England and bringing their skills and secrets with them. It was possibly John Fox and his manager who had noted the Glass tableware, glass bottles and glass windows were still a very high quality siliceous rock at Townend, the galena lead oxprivilege of the gentry and this also translated into who could ide at Ewden and the quality of the ganister clay at Whitwell, all build a furnace and start to make glassware. How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

with a net 65, the same score as Steve Coutts (10), but with a better back 9.

In Division 2 Jonathan Finlay (27) had a net 66. Brian Dobb (16) had a net 68, the same score as Malcolm Ingles (18), but again a better back 9.

The Ladies played their midweek 9-hole Stableford on 14 April and Liana O'Sullivan (1) won convincingly with 20 points. Liana finished the 9 holes 1 under par gross and with 2 birdies. Sam Wood (24) was second with 14 points and Ladies Captain, Heather Evans (15) was third with 13 points.

Good Friday saw a big field compete in 2-ball Texas Scramble. The scoring on the day was excellent, helped by warm, sunny and very calm conditions. With a combined handicap allowance of 3 shots the winners with a net 56 were Danny Costello and Richard Grimmer. Their round included an eagle 2 on the first hole and 5 further birdies with no dropped shots. Les Wright and Noel Weaver (combined handicap of 8) were second with a net 58. Third was Craig Batty and Chris Naylor (combined handicap of 3) with a net 60.

On the same day the Gents played the April mid-week Medal. Overall, the first three places went to Division 1 players. Nigel Eggenton (10) won with an excellent net 61, a round that included 2 birdies on the front 9. Oliver Warren (12) was second

There was a second pairs competition over the Bank Holiday weekend on Saturday 16 April. This time a better ball Stableford. Farther and son team Mick and Ian Hulbert won with an excellent 46 points. Craig Allen and Martin Bye were second with

44 points. Neil Elliott and Ash Howe were third with 43 points. The Gents then played a strokeplay Pro's Prize on Easter Sunday. Dave Buxton (10), despite a painful 7 on the first hole, came home the winner with a net 66. Craig Batty (4) finished second with the same net score as Dave, but lost out on countback. Carl Thomas (12) was third with a net 68. Finally, the Ladies Section played their Annual Easter Flag competition on Easter Sunday. The aim of the competition is to be the last player to put their Easter flag on a green flag. This happens when each player has used their full handicap allowance. This year's winner was Sue Clegg. At the same time the Ladies played for the best strokeplay score, with Terri Moffett (28) winning with a net 77. Margaret Pearson (30) was second with a net 78 and Sue Clegg (48) was third with a net 79. Not content with the golf, the Ladies also had a competition for the best dressed flag and this was won by Margaret Pearson.

Steels end with a draw

Stocksbridge Park Steels finished their season with a 1-1 draw against relegation threatened Sheffield FC.

Steels took the lead with their first effort when a Josh Nodder strike from range found its way under Ryan Musselwhite and into the back of the net. Marc Newsham converted a penalty in the second half to make sure both sides had a share of the points. The game started off nervy which was to be expected with Sheffield potentially plunging back into the relegation zone. It ended up being quite physical as well. An early challenge meant Ben Partridge only spent three minutes on the pitch before being forced off with an injury. Mikey Roxburgh also took one in the gut from Manny Kianga who went in for the ball at the far post. Stocksbridge had the better of the chances in the early going though. Nodder worked hard to chase down an opportunity before curling his shot wide. Kurtis Turner also had a shot blocked. At the other end, Sheffield had their own chance when the Steels defence were bamboozled by a bouncing ball, allowing Nathan Modest to nip and make the shot which ended up being over. The Steels would strike first. Nodder got some space from around 25 yards out and decided to have a go. It wasn’t the cleanest connection in the world but Musselwhite

couldn’t stop it from going underneath him and it would nestle itself into the back of the net, putting Sheffield into some real trouble. Both sides looked to get the next goal

Ladies suffer defeat

box and Lee Cooksey wrestled Modest to the ground. Despite protestations that it was outside of the box, the penalty was given. Newsham stepped up and sent it past Roxburgh to seal the equaliser and Sheffield’s first goal against the Steels since New Years Day 2019. The game livened up after the goal as both teams pushed to get the win. Stocksbridge may have felt irritated they didn’t get the lead back though. Good work from Luke Mangham allowed him to cross in for Nodder who fizzed a volley over. Not long after, Reece Fielding almost got a lucky bounce from Musselwhite but the ball ricocheted off his head and wide.

which would be crucial in deciding the game. Neither team though could create a clear cut opportunity before the end of the half. Newsham did get an overhead kick off from close range, but he was crowded and so didn’t have the best connection which allowed Roxburgh to make a simple save. At the other end, Nick Guest latched onto the end of a long throw but his shot was blocked and deflected safely into the arms of Musselwhite. This meant Stocksbridge only had a one goal lead going into the half. And not long into the second half, Stocksbridge would be punished for not extending that lead. A long ball was sent into the

Stocksbridge’s best chance would fall to Nodder. He would get the ball in the box and fired it goalwards, only for Musselwhite to punch it away. The goalkeeper would have to be alive to punch his save away at the second attempt as otherwise it would have gone in but this would be the closest Stocksbridge got. Sheffield had the final chance of the game. Not long after Scott Ruthven came close to haunting his former club by volleying over, the Oldest Club swung in a cross from the right. The ball flew over Jordan Lemon and it to fell to Kianga who couldn’t get the touch on it with the goal at his mercy. This gave Stocksbridge a let off and a point to finish the season off with.

Oughtibridge ladies suffered defeat on Sunday to Chesterfield FC. The home team won their battles all over the pitch throughout the game but a long shot looped over the goalkeeper to give the visitors all three points. The ladies team travel to Mansfield on Tuesday night. Photo: Myra Little

After a cagey start that saw Sheffield hold a narrow twopoint lead after four races, the Tru Plant Tigers stamped their authority on proceedings with four straight heat advantages to open up a 12-point cushion at the halfway stage.

British Champion Adam Ellis bounced back from a tough opening ride to top score with 11 - competently backed up by home debutant Tobiasz Musielak who yet again demonstrated a liking for his new surroundings with two heat wins on his way to paid-10.

Belle Vue skipper Brady Kurtz and GP star Max Fricke showed their class on numerous occasions to pile up more than half of the Aces points tally on a tough night for Mark Lemon’s side. Top scorer Ellis said: “It’s been a long wait to come back here and we’ve hit the ground running which is something we maybe struggled with last year, so we’re all pleased. “Our reserves were riding really well which is so important if we want to challenge for titles across the year.

“It’s started brilliantly, the team spirit is up there with some of the best teams I’ve been involved with and we’re only three meetings in which is a positive sign. “If we all stay fit and confident like this then we can take anyone on at any track - we’re looking forward to it.” Sheffield now enter a threeweek break in the schedule before launching their league campaign with a home clash against reigning champions Peterborough on Thursday May 5 (7.30). SHEFFIELD 53: Adam Ellis 11, Tobiasz Musielak 9+1, Stefan Nielsen 7+2, Jack Holder 7+1, Craig Cook 7+1, Kyle Howarth 7+1, Connor Mountain 5+1. BELLE VUE 37: Brady Kurtz 12+1, Max Fricke 10, Charles Wright 7, Tom Brennan 4+1, Norick Blodorn 4, Jye Etheridge 0, Jake Allen 0.

After a couple of Years without any awards dinner, Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby have relaunched the event to be held in the Clubhouse suite on Friday 13th May with a 7pm for 7.30pm start. Chairman Andy Bell says tickets & sponsored tables are selling fast & the event is likely to sell out shortly, so the message is get yours to avoid disappointment for what promises to be a great night. Former England International front row forward Jeff Probyn returns as guest speaker after a memorable previous appearance, as does popular comedian Lea Roberts, so laughter will be almost guaranteed. The club are also running an ‘Irish Pig Racing’ evening on 29th April with some runners still available to buy, after the races have all been

kindly sponsored. Contact Lucie at the bar to reserve your Pig.

The 1st XV will complete their season this weekend with a trip to York RI to replay the controversially abandoned home fixture. Stocksbridge have to play this fixture away as a penalty for forfeiting a recent play off game due to be played in York. With an Easter break to rest up, the Coaching Team are hopeful of having close to a full squad to select from, although there are still several walking wounded who will need fitness tests closer to the clash. ‘This is a game we can win’ said skipper Adam RolesMiddlehurst, adding ‘& we have a bit of an extra incentive given the circumstances surrounding the trip’. Whatever the result on

Saturday, Stocksbridge will end the play off fixtures at the foot of the table, but with plenty to be optimistic about for their next campaign. ‘ it has been a hit & miss season in many ways’, explained retiring Director of Rugby, Andy Tyers, ‘there has been a lack of consistency in the fixtures, teams have been withdrawing from the league, there is still a Covid issue, & we have had a crippling injury list to contend with. The boys have remained positive & turned up with a smile on their face to train & to play. There is work to do for the incoming Head Coach however, there is a base to start from, & some exciting junior talent coming thru the ranks’. Tyers will step down after the weekends clash at York RI.

Hibberts skittle out Silkstone Stocksbridge 1st XI - 108 all out (Liam Grayson 24, Joe Hibbert 23) Silkstone 1st XI - 54 all out (Andy Hibbert 6-22, Joe Hibbert 3-7) Stocksbridge 1st XI made the short trip to Silkstone for their first game in the Yorkshire Cricket Southern Premier League. Captain Andy Hibbert lost the toss and were put into bat on a track that suited the bowlers. Jack Newton was removed early for a duck, but opener Matt Price stuck around and saw off the new ball. Price was removed for a well made 19. Ben Cherry looked composed at the crease but was removed for a cracker of a ball for 11. Stocksbridge were 43-3 and needing to build some momentum. Liam Grayson and Joe Hibbert began to dig in and the pair swung the momentum back into the game for the 1st. Grayson was removed for 24. This started a mini collapse, as four wickets were lost for just four runs. Joe Hibbert was removed for 23.

Captain Andy Hibbert took 6-22 for the 1st XI.

The away side finished on 108 all out with a lot to do with the ball. Silkstone got off to a positive start, however Andy Hibbert struck first

with the new ball with the score on 21. Joe Hibbert came into the attack and took two wickets in his first over, as the visitors were slowly creeping back into the game. This started the collapsed for Silkstone as Andy Hibbert worked his magic from one end, while Joe Hibbert tied up the other end. Silkstone didn’t have any answers and were skittled out for a miserable 54. Andy Hibbert the pick of the bowlers with superb figures of 6-22, a real captains performance. Joe Hibbert finished with 3-7 to backup his captain. It was a fitting moment as debutant Richard Marsden came into the attack and took the last wicket. A great start to the campaign for the 1st team who take on Cawthorne at home next week. Worsbrough Bridge - 197-7 (Cal Haywood 2-25, Paul Hargreaves 2-46) Stocksbridge - 132-8 (Cal Haywood 41*, Chris Thwaites 26) Stocksbridge 2nd XI fell to an opening day defeat at home to

Worsbrough Bridge CC. Worsborough got off to a quick start, with a flurry of early boundaries. Captain Thwaites eventually broke the opening stand, however Worsbrough continued to form good partnerships. Stocksbridge werent at their best with the ball or in the field, allowing Worsbrough to post a very good total of 197-7, Cal Haywood picking up very good figures of 2-25. Unfortunately, Stocksbridge's reply got off to a terrible start, with wickets falling at all too regular intervals. Young opener Jack Firth provided some solid resistance with a hard fought 19, however 'Bridge were floundering at 59-7. Haywood joined Thwaites in the middle and the pair restored some pride in the total but Stocksbridge could only muster 133-8, with Cal Haywood top scoring with a destructive 41*, Chris Thwaites 26 and Jack Firth 19. A tricky start to life in the YCSPL, however definitely some positives to take into our next game on the 30th at home to Hatfield Town!
