PENISTONE THANKS MAUREEN Unexpected
visitor delays parkrun Sheffield parkrunners come to the rescue after panicked deer gets trapped in Hillsborough Park Parkrunners got a shock when a deer joined them on the course before becoming trapped and injuring itself as it tried to escape.
A dedication to mark the tireless efforts of former Penistone Mayor, and long time member of Barnsley MBC, the late Maureen Harrison has been officially launched.
of its "Take a seat" scheme, was instigated by her devoted long time partner, Brian Lindsay, of Monk Bretton, a well know market trader in the town's market and surrounding towns.
A public seat has been placed outside Penistone Church with the plaque "Penistone Thanks Maureen Harrison for her many years she devoted to the town and its people. ”A real woman of substance."
Maureen, who passed away last year was a member of Penistone Town Council and a former Mayor and an independent member of Barnsley District Council for many years. During her time she was responsible for her fight to retain many of the town's amenities, including the Paramount Cinema and a

She served on several committees of Barnsley MBC, planning being her speciality. Attending the ceremony was Penistone Mayor, Coun Andrew Millner and his wife Gillian and several members of Stainborough Rotary club of which Brian was a founder member along with Maureen, a past President.
Participants in the popular parkrun event came to the startled creature’s aid in Hillsborough Park on Saturday, helping to keep it calm and safe while they waited for firefighters and the RSPCA to arrive and take over. Thankfully, it’s understood the deer was relatively unscathed, sustaining only cuts and bruises, and was able to be released back
into the wild following its traumatic ordeal. A post on the parkruns social media said “It’s been a bit of an eventful morning in many ways, with vehicles trying to get onto the course, and some quite upsetting scenes with our visiting deer. Thanks to everyone who came together to help. We’re really pleased to report that after the fire and rescue service came (the crew included one of our regular parkrunners!), the RSPCA and an emergency vet attended to check it over. It was calmed down and they will release it back into the wild once they’re happy it’s ok.”

Jubilee
celebrations ...Cont. from front page
Sheffield's celebrations In Sheffield, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Show will be held in Norfolk Heritage Park on Thursday 2nd June, from 1pm to 10pm. It’s a free entry, family event with fun for everyone including the Jubilee Beacon ceremony at 9.45pm, The Vander Brothers Super Heroes Space Wheel Show, a 1950’s fancy dress competition, a children’s craft tent, Cirque Du Bleurgh: fire juggling, stilt walking and giant bubbles, Sheffield Sea Cadets display, a community stage with contemporary and traditional music, an artisan craft marquee, local heritage displays, a board games corner, The ‘Tent of Mystery’ and ‘Professor John’s Flea Circus’, family fun fair, food stalls, trade stands and exhibitors. At the event, the Sheffield beacon will be lit as part of the United Kingdom’s long tradition of celebrating royal jubilees, weddings and coronations. Over 1,500 beacons will be lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories. For the first time, beacons will also be lit in each of the capital cities of the Commonwealth countries to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The Principal beacon will be lit in a special ceremony at Buckingham Palace. There will be events, activities and parades in the city centre along with a giant screen to show the Queen’s Party at the Palace on Saturday 4th June and other events across the full weekend. The Town Hall, City Hall, St Paul’s Parade, Inner Peace Gardens and Sheffield Winter Garden will be decorated with Union Jacks and bunting will be on display throughout the city centre including the Moor Market. The Norfolk Heritage Park event is being held in association with the city centre’s annual Food Festival, which is also celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The Food Festival will be on over the 4 days and Platinum Jubilee-themed.
The Williams family from Penistone love doing things together, so it seemed only right that nine-year-old Molly would join her dad in his fundraising challenge for the Royal Air Forces Association. Molly has spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), so despite not being able to walk, she is joining her dad Julian as he attempts to walk 100 miles in 24 hours. She will be taking part using her Duet Tandem Wheelchair bicycle, with the help of her mum May, sister Anya (11) and brother Edmund (7). They will complete 84 laps of the athletics track: one lap for every night Molly has spent in critical care.
The challenge will take place on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 May, at the English Institute of Sport & Olympic Legacy Park, in Sheffield, Talking of her condition, Molly said: “SMA is a form of motor neurone disease, and I am a full-time wheelchair user. I know I will never walk, stand or even sit without support. I have already had two ten-hour surgeries at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. I have had my spine straightened with metal rods, both hips reconstructed and more emergency admissions than I can remember. Sometimes I need a special mask-and-air to help me breathe, and lots of other kit to get me through each day.” As Julian served in the Royal Air Force, he was put in touch with the RAF Association back in 2014 when he and his wife May realised they needed extra support to afford the many adaptations they needed to their new house, as well as a wheelchair-accessible car into the water – which is lovely after all the pain of my surgeries. It is difficult to put into for the family. words, how grateful we are to the Association, Molly said: “Dad didn’t expect the incredible and we want to give something back.” response and generosity we have received. The RAF Association has supported me in Julian added: “The support we’ve had is overso many ways; including my first wheelchair- whelming, so hopefully we can all raise lots accessible vehicle, meaning I could go out in of money to help the Association be there my chair for the first time beyond my home for other families who need them. I’m contown. They also helped provide a specialist fident I can complete the challenge, but a litbath, which lowers me safely and comfortably tle nervous as I’ve never done anything like
this before. I considered running a marathon, but lots of people do that, so I wanted to do something a bit different. The fact that we’re doing this as a family means we can support each other through the tough bits, just like we do every day.” You can support the Williams family with their fundraising by visiting https://www. justgiving.com/fundraising/100miles4molly

Decline in Hedgehog Population
The hedgehog population in the UK is declining at a worrying rate.
Wildlife charities People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) recently published a report. The report revealed that hedgehog populations have plummeted by between 30% to 75% in rural areas since 2000, with the largest declines in eastern England. This report is based on almost 40 years of data and found that hedgehogs have suffered a long historic decline in the UK, but what’s becoming apparent is the vast differences between rural and urban populations, with urban hedgehog population numbers appearing to have stabilised. In order to combat this decline, experts from Hedgehog Street (a joint campaign run by BHPS and PTES) suggest focusing on maintaining and improving suitable habitats for hedgehogs living in urban and suburban environments, as well as restoring the balance between our human-centric world and the natural world all around us.

YourLetters Levelling up With 400 weeks to go until the government’s levelling up deadline, South Yorkshire’s new Mayor, Oliver Coppard, has challenged the government to get on with delivering on their promise of improving the quality of life for millions across the country by their own deadline of 2030. In an open letter, Oliver Coppard urges the PM to co-operate with him and leaders across South Yorkshire to address the disparities between the best and worst-off parts of the UK, highlighting the most pressing issues facing the communities of South Yorkshire.
challenges, none of the challenges we face are inevitable or insurmountable. Across the 12 missions articulated in the Levelling-Up White Paper, the evident disparities between the position in South Yorkshire and the ambitions you have so clearly articulated are all the result of political choices made over the last 40 years. “If we are to overcome those disparities in just 400 weeks, then your government must finally recognise and respond to the needs of our communities; our priorities must be your priorities. Our challenges must be your own.”
Queen’s Jubilee
The government’s ambitions in the levelling up white paper outlined their nation-wide plans to increase skills training, narrow the Healthy Life Expectancy between local areas where it is highest and lowest, and to bring public transport networks significantly closer to the standards found in London.
Dear Editor
The reality in South Yorkshire is that only 37% of residents are educated to degree level, compared to the national average of 44%. The healthy life expectancy is significantly lower in South Yorkshire’s three towns for Males and Females (Barnsley 57.54 and Doncaster 59.08 compared to England 63.18). And in 2020, bus passenger journeys had fallen by nearly 60% across the region since privatisation in 1986.
I wish them all the very best in the future.
In his letter, Oliver Coppard said: “Your government has made clear its ambition to address the disparities between the best and worst-off parts of our country by 2030. There are now fewer than 400 weeks left to deliver on those ambitions, and yet the scale of the task is significant. “While we do face considerable
Two stories caught my attention in your latest issue which I was pleased to read of . The Stocksbridge Foodbank has been a lifeline for so many and the work Ray and Veronica have done there has been essential.
Also with the Platinum Jubilee fast approaching the donation of rose bushes to local schools and senior citizen care homes in the town planted by the Steel Valley Project and helpers is brilliant. I also send my congratulations to Her Majesty The Queen for her Platinum Jubilee. Yours Truly Craig Minto
The choir was originally called Waldershelf Choral Society, named for the two sides of our Valley, Waldershaigh and Hunshelf, and entered (and won) competitions and performed concerts far and wide. This year, in honour of their 60th birthday, Waldershelf Singers are adding Community Choir to the name, so everyone knows they are welcome to join.
In June, the choir will be learning some new songs, with a focus on folk songs sung in harmony, and will sing some of the 60s songs as well. If you love singing and want to join a choir, Waldershelf invite you to come along to the concert to see what it’s like. If you like what you see, then contact them on 07858 747698 about giving it a try.

Wheeler sets O'Sullivan open Wins May Medal first trial time
In glorious sunshine and with the course in excellent condition, Liam O'Sullivan (3), the Stocksbridge Golf Club's League Team Captain, won the May Medal with an excellent net 62. Liam also took the lowest gross score of the day, finishing 1 under par. His round included three birdies, two of those coming in the last three holes. Bob Stephens (23) from Division 2, was second overall with a net 65. Andrew Finney (0) from Division 1, was third with a net 66.
Earlier in the week, on Bank Holiday Monday, there was a May Day Three Club Challenge. Players, as the competition name suggests, can only carry three clubs, that includes a putter. Ash Jowitt (13) won the unusual format by a convincing margin, with 35 Stableford points. Three players took the next three places, all with the same score, but sorted out on countback. The average audience for the evening session was 3.1 million, with a 20% share of the overall viewing audience. Overall across the event, the share of audience was up 30% on last year.

Discovery Sports, which shows the tournament in over 50 countries across Europe, also recorded extremely strong figures on its Eurosport linear channel. Overall the World Championship was its best tournament on record in the UK in terms of average audience and market share with the final seeing a 29% increase against 2021. staring defeat in the face, Chris Thwaites was joined by number 10 batsman Paul Hargreaves, with 20 overs of the innings still remaining! The pair batted with great determination and patience and slowly edged Stocksbridge nearer to the finish line. Following a couple of boundaries from Thwaites, the pair saw Stocksbridge home, winning with just 2 overs left. A match winning gritty 37-run partnership from the pair, enabling the boys
The 1st XI entertained Rockingham 2nd looking to get back to winning ways after a first defeat last Saturday. Stocksbridge won the toss and elected to field first. Jack Vickers struck easy with the score 7-1 after a good catch in the slips from Jack Newton.
The home-side’s reply got off the worst possible start with Matt Price dismissed second ball of innings. It was downhill from there wickets falling at a frequent rate. The 1st were 20-4 and in all sorts of trouble. Liam Grayson tried to take the game away from Rockingham but was dismissed after looking well for his 20.
An excellent win, seeing Stocksbridge through to the next round of the Billy Oates Memorial Cup and rounding off a very successful weekend.

Things got even better when Vickers struck once again to leave the score 30-4.
Hibbert jnr took two wickets, with two good reaction catches from Andy Hirst behind the stumps. The innings took a turn and a last wicket partnership of 44 took Rockingham up to a competitive score of 128 all out.

Captain Andy Hibbert joined the party and took two wickets to get the Stocksbridge off the the perfect start.

in green to record back-to-back league victories.
Jon Pickford and Steve Perry dug in and tried in vein to rescue the innings. However Pickford removed his stump for 21 after a rush of blood to the head. The innings never recovered and Stockbridge were eventually bowled out for a below par 107 and short of the chasing total. A really disappointing day as they look to set things right at Maltby on Saturday. Stocksbridge 2nd XI 93-8 (J Hague 21, C Thwaites 16*) v Silkstone 2nd XI 91 all out (P Hargreaves 4-18, C Thwaites 2-8) Stocksbridge made the short trip over the hill to challenge Silkstone in the first of their two ties this weekend. Silkstone won the toss, electing to bat, a decision that captain Thwaites was more than happy with. Stocksbridge started
well with the ball with Thwaites and Hargreaves beating the bat on multiple occasions. Hargreaves eventually made the breakthrough, continuing his fine form with the ball this season. James Hague and the returning Dave Codd bowled superbly throughout the middle overs, both claiming two wickets each. Thwaites and Hargreaves both returned to the attack and Stocksbridge eventually skittled Silkstone out for just 91, with Paul Hargreaves claiming superb figures of 4 for 18, Chris Thwaites 2 for 8 from his 10 overs and 2 wickets a piece for Dave Codd and James Hague. Stocksbridge's reply got off to a slow start, with wickets falling all too regularly. Only James Hague (21) could muster double figures in the Stocksbridge top 7 and they collapsed to 56-8. Tigers humble champions TOBIASZ Musielak struck a stunning 15-point maximum as Sheffield beat Peterborough in their Premiership opener on Thursday.
The visitors kept their hopes of snatching a consolation league point alive with their first maximum of the night in the penultimate race.
The Tru Plant Tigers defeated the reigning Champions 51-39 at Owlerton after another impressive display from Simon Stead’s side.
But Musielak and Holder denied them their first point of the season as Chris Harris crashed out at high speed whilst challenging for second.
It was Polish winter signing Musielak who stole the show though, producing five faultless rides to wow the Sheffield faithful.
The Tru Plant Tigers are next in action at Ipswich on Monday, May 16 before hosting Wolverhampton at Owlerton on Thursday, May 19 in an all-important Premiership League Cup clash at the top of their Northern Group.
He received solid back-up from fellow heat-leaders Jack Holder and Adam Ellis who both notched double figures. Meanwhile, reserve Connor Mountain recorded his highest score of the season so far while captain Kyle Howarth came up with two paid wins. Craig Cook and Stefan Nielsen both endured tougher nights at the office - but the points they did manage ensured the visitors left the Steel City with nothing to show for their efforts. Tru Plant Tigers team manager Stead said: “That was a really good start for us. “We continued where we left off really from our early Premiership

League Cup results and I think that was a really, really solid display from us against good opposition, considering we’ve not been here for a considerable amount of time. “I think we were a little bit rusty, but ultimately we’ve got the job done. “It probably looks more convincing than it actually was; Peterbor-
ough kept us honest for a long period of time in the match.
They then delivered a 5-1 in Heat Nine to open up a ten-point gap.
“But it’s nice to get off to a winning start in the league and we look forward to the next one.”
Sheffield sealed the deal in Heat 13 with another maximum with Ellis taking a comfortable win, whilst Holder produced one of the best individual rides in a long, long time to get past Peterborough No.1 Michael Palm Toft to claim second place on the final lap.
The first half of the fixture saw six shared races in the opening eight heats - with only two advantages from Musielak and Howarth splitting the two sides.
PETERBOROUGH 39: Benjamin Basso 12, Chris Harris 7, Michael Palm Toft 6+1, Ulrich Ostergaard 5+1, Scott Nicholls 5, Hans Andersen 3+2, Jordan Palin 1+1. Premiership Points: Sheffield 3, Peterborough 0.
