Charity ball raises £20k A CHARITY ball held in memory of well-known Sheffield businesswoman Deborah Holmes has raised more than £20,000 for St Luke’s Hospice.

Deborah’s Diamond Ball marked what would have been Deborah’s 60th birthday.

The event was organised by her daughter Rebecca Dransfield and Sister Amanda Holmes with more than 200 guests attending a fabulous evening in the beautiful setting of the city’s Cutlers Hall.

Guests enjoyed music by X Factor’s Jack and Joel and the English Gentlemen as well as a charity auction and raffle – and the evening raised a total of £20,253 for St Luke’s.

Deborah was the founder and owner Sandersons Department Store at Fox Valley in her hometown of Stocksbridge.

She died in January 2019 at St Luke’s and in her last weeks was supported by the St Luke’s Community Team.

The store now has sister stores in Stroud and Morpeth and Rebecca is the Senior Buyer.

Deborah’s family have undertaken a number of fundraising endeavours for the charity in the last three years.

Her husband Mark raises funds for the hospice through his company’s annual charity bike ride and friends and family have also taken part in the Sheffield half marathon and other events.

Rebecca said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported the ball and helped us to raise such a brilliant amount of money for such a wonderful cause.

“My mum used to plan and organise fantastic events and balls for charity so it seemed a fitting way to mark what would have been her 60th birthday.

“She had a great talent for bringing people from all walks of life together and she was so loved by many people.

“We wanted to organise this special event for St Luke’s to thank this very special place for being there when our family needed them - they helped us during one of the worse times possible and I will continue in my efforts to raise money for such an amazing charity.”

St Luke’s Fundraising Account Manager Anna Gott said: “To raise such a fantastic sum in just one evening was an extraordinary achievement and we cannot thank Deborah’s family enough for all the great work they are doing on our behalf.

New Lord Mayor ‘sworn-in’ Sioned-Mair Richards becomes the new Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Sheffield “If you are among those people making Sheffield the brilliant place that we’re proud to call home, then I can’t wait to meet you.”

These are the words of SionedMair Richards, who has today been voted in as the new the Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Sheffield and inaugurated at Sheffield City Council’s Annual General Meeting held at Sheffield Town Hall on 18 May. Councillor Richards is the city’s 125th Lord Mayor and welcomed her new role saying “please, please invite me, and Jackie the Lady Mayoress to see what you or your group are doing. I’m really looking forward to getting out and meeting people. Those having 100th birthday parties, those organising friendship lunches, those making charity events happen, those working to change lives, those volunteering quietly.”

The Lord Mayor’s consort will be Councillor Jackie Satur.

Originally from Wales, Sioned moved to Sheffield for love 21

years ago, to be with her husband, Howard. She now lives in Burngreave with her son Dan and their cat Titch. She is semi-retired and is kept busy working as a councillor. She has been involved in local government most of her life, either as an officer or as a councillor. She worked as an Infant teacher, and also worked as a researcher for an MP in Parliament.

“But local government is where we make a real difference, and I am proud to have played my part over 40 years.”

Sioned said that her house is filled with books, which is her other passion, and she reads books of pretty much every genre. She also volunteers at Ecclesfield library every week and loves talking books to the regulars.

“We have a playgroup on a Friday where the children race about, carrying books, being read to and generally associating libraries with having a good time. I’ll be there as usual this Friday, though wearing my chain. Just for show!”

Sioned has promised that “every Wednesday of my year as Lord Mayor, I will have children from all around the city come to the Mayor’s Parlour to read with me and talk books. I’ll also be going out to meet groups in libraries and doing all I can to pass on the love of reading to the children of Sheffield. As well as this, I’ll be fundraising to make sure books are part of the lives of all our children.

Sioned’s husband, Howard, who was a city councillor from 1978 to 1993, died two years ago in the Palliative Care Unit at the Northern General Hospital, and she said that “the care was second to none but we both agreed at the time that the building needed brightening up, modernising and making more comfortable.

She will be keeping her promise to him by fundraising for the Palliative Care Unit, now that it’s possible after Covid and its restrictions, to make it “the place that the dying and their families need.”

Stocksbridge man pleads not guilty to attempted murder Jurors heard harrowing 999 call from Sheffield man who thought he was dying as he lay bleeding in city park.

A desperate gunshot survivor told police during a harrowing 999 call that he had been shot five times and he was convinced he was going to die.

Sheffield Crown Court heard during an ongoing trial how Ali al-Humakaini was shot at Osgathorpe Park, near Pitsmoor, Sheffield, on October 31, 2020.

Stephen Wood QC, prosecuting, claimed Jabari Fanty, Aaron Yanbak and another defendant, Jordan Foote, were involved in the attempted murder of Mr al-Humakaini.

He also claimed Fanty, Yanbak and another defendant, Ricardo Nkanyezi, murdered Ramey Salem at a flat on Grimesthorpe Road South, Burngreave, Sheffield, weeks later on November 16, 2020.

Stocksbridge High School was visited by the town’s Mayor and Deputy Mayor on 23 May 2022 to hand over a banner of flags designed by all local schools to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Pupils in every local school were invited to design a flag to commemorate the Jubi-

lee and they now fly together over Stocksbridge Town Hall.

Sheffield water leak: Mystery as unknown man 'fully opens' hydrant in High Green causing massive mains leak.

A Sheffield neighbourhood was flooded last week after an unknown person ‘fully opened’ a fire hydrant causing water to shoot 15ft into the air, writes Alastair Ulke for the Sheffield Star.

Residents on Kinsey Road, High Green, were baffled on May 20, as they stepped outside to find a mains pipe gushing onto the street.

The leak reportedly began around 11.30am.

Photos show how the street was quickly flooded, with one resident saying a police car even arrived on scene.

Now, Yorkshire Water says the leak was caused by an unknown person “fully opening” a fire hydrant.A spokesperson said: “One of our technicians visited this morning after we were alerted to water gushing down the street.

"When we got there, we found that the hydrant was fully open and we’re not sure how this has happened.

"We quickly closed the hydrant and got everything back to normal.”

Meanwhile, a resident told The Star how the leak was started by a man who got out

of a van, opened the hydrant and drove off.

The resident – who asked not to be named – said they recognised the van as belonging to a water company, but could not be sure which one.

The spokesperson for Yorkshire Water added: “We’d like to remind everyone not to attempt to interfere with hydrants as this is a unnecessary waste of water and could pose a significant risk if they’re damaged as the fire service need to use them in emergencies.”

MP against legally recognising non-binary people An MP hit back at Miriam Cates MP who claimed that non-binary people are more likely to be autistic during a debate on legally recognising the gender.

Sheffield has been named a "Tree City Of The World" just years after a longrunning row sparked by the felling of thousands of its trees was resolved.

Tree Cities of the World is an international programme recognising work to sustainably manage and maintain urban forests and trees.

A total of 19 UK cities have earned the title, with 137 "tree cities" globally.

Sheffield Street Tree Partnership said it was "thrilled" the city had been awarded the international accolade.

The partnership was formed in 2021 after the resolution of a dispute between local residents and the city council which had engaged contractors to fell many street trees.

The row was over a £2.2bn, 25-year street improvement project starting in 2012 which saw trees felled by council contractors Amey.

The authority, which was planting new trees after removing existing ones, insisted the trees earmarked for felling were diseased, dying, dangerous or damaging.

Some of the felled trees were healthy but still classed as dangerous or damaging, and opponents of the scheme said alternative options should have been pursued to save those trees.

A compromise was reached between campaigners and the council in December 2018.

Sheffield Tree Partnership was subsequently set up to create a new strategy to retain street trees where possible using highway engineering, monitoring and maintenance, and decisions on a case-by-case basis.

It is made up of representatives from Sheffield City Council, Amey, Sheffield Tree Action Group (STAG), Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust and the Woodland Trust.

Nathan Edwards, chair of the partnership, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "Becoming a Tree City of the World means we can build on the progress already made in protecting and nurturing our street trees."

The city's residents could now be reassured "we have the right governance and resources in place to protect our urban forest now and for future generations", the partnership said.

Meanwhile, Councillor Paul Wood said the award showed the authority was carrying out a "thorough and established management approach" to enrich the canopy of street trees in the city.

"Being recognised as a Tree City of the World is testament to the partnership's commitment and is a well-deserved accolade which symbolises the positive progress made," he said.

Labour, Greens and the Lib Dems agree collaborative way forward Labour, Greens and the Liberal Democrats have set out a collaborative and politically proportionate approach on how to run the council.

Labour’s Cllr Terry Fox will continue as Leader of the Council and Cllr Julie Grocutt will be the Deputy Leader.

This will be the first council leadership under the new committee system following last year’s referendum.

Under the new system there are eight policy committees. All of the council’s political groups will be represented on the committees, in proportion to the numbers of councillors from each party elected on 5th May 2022.

Sheffield City Council’s annual general meeting decided the committees chairs with the Labour party taking four of the nine committee chairs, the Liberal Democrats three and the Green party two.

Labour’s Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “As leader I’m going to try to navigate us through this new committee system to make sure we get decisions which deliver for the people of Sheffield and our staff. We need a number of issues sorting very quickly. We’ve got some really hard pressures on our budget that we’ve got to deal with. We’re seeing inflation at its highest for forty years, that’s the seriousness of what we’re dealing with at this moment. For me, we will be unrelenting in our pressure to make sure that we deliver. What I really want is to achieve a different way of working where we have the openness and transparency on decisions that everybody can buy into.”

Councillor Douglas Johnson, Leader of the Sheffield Green Party, said: “14 Green party councillors are ready to play their part on committees and their part in the leadership of the council as we go into a new committee system. It is fair to say that it is not always easy working together, but the outcome is we get decisions made one way or the other. That’s why we have to work cross-party and we’re committed to doing so.”

Councillor Shaffaq Mohammed, Leader of the Sheffield Liberal Democrats, said: “As voted for by the people of Sheffield we have a new system and it is something I really believe in and I want to make sure it works. Coupled with this, the city is facing a serious financial situation and therefore I can reassure the residents of Sheffield that I and my 28 Lib Dem colleagues will play an active role in ensuring that the city prospers, grows and we will deal with some of the big issues such as climate change, the cost- of-living crisis, and local devolution. Obviously, we want to make sure the Mayor of South Yorkshire also delivers on having a bus service which is fit for Sheffield.”

Platinum Jubilee Celebrations in Hunshelf Plans are well ahead to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in the Parish of Hunshelf.

Parishioners and friends are invited and encouraged to make and display Scarecrows across the parish. The theme is “Royalty through the Ages”.

To take part, register your scarecrow be emailing hunshelfscarecrow@gmail.com with your name, address and chosen scarecrow by Friday 20th May. Scarecrow voting forms will be available from the telephone box by 29th May. Prizes will be awarded for the favourite scarecrows, as voted by parishioners and visitors.

On Thursday 2nd June at 9.45pm the beacon at the Isle of Skye will be lit as part of the National Beacon Chain.

On Friday 3rd June at 10.00am, Green Moor Church is holding a Summer Fair and will be serving bacon sandwiches and refreshments. At 11.00am Kathryn Battye will lead a Parish Walk from the Isle of Skye to view the Scarecrows at Underbank, Snowden Hill etc.

Walkers are asked to wear strong shoes and be prepared for ups, downs and stiles. Refreshments and comfort stops will be available en route.

Saturday 4th June, Hunshelf Parish Council has no events are planned but we would like to encourage everyone to support the Fun Day being arranged by neighbouring Oxspring Parish Council.

Everyone is asked to bring their own picnic. A Platinum Jubilee Baking competitions will be arranged for children – decorated bunting biscuits and cup cakes are requested, and for adults – a decorated cake. At 3.00pm there will be traditional children's races, games and prizes. The National Anthem will be played at the close of events.

Plans to build 14 new houses near historic Sheffield barn and sports ground Developers are planning to build 14 new houses on land near a historic Grade II listed barn dating back to the 17th century, writes Local Democracy reporter Molly Williams for the Sheffield Star.

In a report they added: “The scheme would have an acceptable visual impact on the locality, an acceptable impact on heritage assets, and on the amenities of surrounding occupiers and highway safety.

Quinta Developments Limited applied to build the four-bedroom detached houses in the garden of Ingfield House, 11 Bocking Hill, in Stocksbridge near the sports ground.

“The disbenefits of the scheme relate to the slightly compromised amenity of some units within the development owing to the depth of gardens, heights of boundary structures and perception of privacy.

In a statement provided with their plans they said: “The proposed development would make a positive contribution to Sheffield’s housing stock, on a designated site for housing and in an established residential area.

“The proposed units will complement the existing housing stock in Stocksbridge, being a contemporary development that accords with the prevalent scale and typology of housing surrounding the site.

“The design of the site layout ensures that there will be a good level of amenity for future occupants, as well as preserving the existing amenity of nearby residents.”

Councillors on the planning and highways committee will decide whether to grant permission in a meeting next week.

Ahead of the meeting, planning officers recommended approval saying there is a tilted balance in favour of housing developments because Sheffield currently falls short of the government’s supply targets.

“To some extent level changes within the site contribute to these as does the amount of development proposed. However, living conditions are considered to be acceptable.”

They said the site was cleared of vegetation – removing biodiversity – before an ecological survey was carried out which was “undesirable” and went against the spirit of the National Planning Policy Framework but some measures had been put in place to improve this.

What neighbours think There were two rounds of consultation and 21 letters of objection, including from Stocksbridge Town Council, were received during the first.

Concerns raised included a lack of affordable housing, overdevelopment, increased traffic, harm to the historic barn, access and parking problems.

The meeting took place on Tuesday, May 24.

Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations in Ecclesfield Parish

In 2022 the Queen will become the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking a 70-year reign.

A series of events will take place across the country to mark this and Ecclesfield Parish Council and others will be organising events across the Parish.

These include Beacon Lighting events taking place at Chapeltown Park and Grenoside Community Centre on 2 June 2022.

Both will commence at 7.00 pm and finish at about 10.00 pm.

Free to Attend Free to attend, each will involve a range of activities, including music, refreshments and an official beacon lighting. We have also planted a tree.

Stocksbridge Walkers get new sponsors Stocksbridge Walkers are Welcome are grateful to their sponsors for funding a new signposting leaflet.

This provides the link to the website, which, in turn, has downloadable instructions for over sixty walks in our local area. These are split into: Short (less than 5 miles), Medium (up to 9 miles) and Long.

The website was heavily used during lockdown as walkers looked for different places to visit. As two visitors from Canada put it: ‘Your website and pamphlets have been a godsend as we have been walking in the area. We’ll visit again!’

PRIMARY SCHOOL RUNNERS UP AT WEMBLEY

“We will have a fantastic new building which is at the centre of the regeneration of Manchester Road, and we want to find a really inspiring name which reflects its standing in the town and as a multi-use hub which is here for the whole town.

One of the key projects in the £24.1 million plan for Stocksbridge is to build a new Library and Community Hub building which will house a range of facilities, including high quality, managed workspace.

“It could be a name which is reminiscent of the town’s industrial history or something completely new, fresh and different. We’re really looking forward to hearing the ideas that the children come up with.”

Now the Towns Fund Board are calling on local school pupils to help them find a name for the new building.

A primary school football team played at Wembley last weekend.

The pupils competed in the EFL Utilita Kids cup final this Saturday.

Their journey began last October when they won a local phase tournament at Thorncliffe, hosted by SWFC. The team scored an amazing 40 goals, conceding just 1.

The win would see the school go on and represent SWFC in the re-

gional tournament at Accrington Stanley in March.

In the March regional tournament, the team performed amazing once again and got past the 11 other northern clubs in League One to win the tournament.

Overcoming teams from Sunderland, Morecambe, Fleetwood among others along the way.

They beat Crewe Alexandra 3-0 in the final to earn a place at Wembley.

Football champions Tigers make solid start reach national finals in pairs

Year Five children from Angram Bank Primary School in High Green became the Regional NFL flag football champions this weekend.

Their success ensures their qualification for the national primary school finals.

Should they win, they will be representing the UK at an international tournament next January at the Pro Bowl in Las Vegas.

The children had to win the regional competition in order to progress to the National

FORMER STEEL SIGNS FOR ROVERS Former Stocksbridge Park Steel’s midfield ‘dynamo’ and son of former professional Wayne Biggins has signed for league two Doncaster Rovers.

Harrison Biggins, 26, has more than 120 career appearances to his name having come through the ranks with Barnsley FC.

The 20 mile race takes place in the Hope Valley and involves 2,800 feet of ascent.

Success for the golf ladies Rugby Award Stocksbridge Golf Club Ladies Alison Sedgwick and Liana O'Sullivan won through their third round Daily Mail Foursomes qualifier on 18 May.

College success Barnsley College’s Sports Academy male footballers are celebrating winning the South Yorkshire Schools and Colleges FA Cup after beating Maltby College 5-3.

The final was held at Houghton Main FC ground and a goal each from Harley Holt, Charlie Gill, Carter Fairclough, Joe Mercer and Calum Smith put the game to bed. An impressive individual performance from Charlie Gill also played a vital part in the team’s success, winning him player of the match.

factors contribute to their long term development. Essentially, our Football Academy is about providing a learning environment to achieve academic and sporting excellence.”

Stocksbridge 1st XI 89-2 (B Cherry 49*, J Newton 28*) The 1st XI entertained old rivals Parkhead for the second round of the Presidents Cup. A great partnership between Ben Cherry and Jack Newton giving the 1st a commanding 8 wicket victory to make it two wins from the weekend.

2nds continue fine form Stocksbridge 2nd XI (222-8 J Hague 72, H Hurst 50*, J Murfin 49) beat Scholes 1st XI (210 C Haywood 3-33) 2nd XI continue their fine form this season, extending their winning streak to 5 games.

Batting first the 2nds posted a very good total of 222-8. James Hague opened the innings and top scored with an excellent and well measured 72. Jack Murfin came to the crease at number 3 and was at his destructive best.

Murfin knocked 49 in no time at all, including a number of lusty blows into neighbouring fields. Harry Hurst looked in great touch on his return to the side, adding some much needed lower order runs, finishing on 50 not out. An excellent innings, including 3 sixes, enabled Stocksbridge to post a very good total of 222-8 from their 40 overs.

Thwaites and Haywood opened the bowling, looking to take early wickets. Thwaites did just that, with opener Cauldwell nicking behind to Ben Lyons. Scholes were struggling early and fell to 55-3. Scholes captain Watson took to the first change bowlers, smashing his way to 75, giving his team a real chance.

However, Stocksbridge eventually came out on top, bowling Scholes out for 210, winning by just 12 runs. An exciting game, which perhaps ended up closer than it should have. Callum Haywood continued his great form with 3-33.
