GOLD AWARD FOR ‘FAMOUS FIVE’ Five ‘young men’ from Chapeltown received their Gold Duke of Edinburgh award at Buckingham Palace, recently.

The boys, from the 7th Sheffield Boys’ Brigade had to wait two years after being awarded the gold awards back in 2020. Howard Atkinson, William Rowland, Patrick Raybould, Dhurs Chongar and Daniel Sadler have all achieved the DOE Gold Award. They were accompanied in London by supportive parents and retiring Captains Wendy and Ed Brown. Husband and wife Wendy, retiring Captain of the 1st Chapeltown girls’ brigade and Ed Brown retiring captain of 7th Sheffield boys’ brigade joined them in the gardens of the palace.

Mrs Brown continued “It was a wonderful day for all involved” The brigade for both boys and girls meet on a Tuesday evening at The Methodist Chrurch, Chapeltown. The Brigades started back up last November, and ‘take-in kids at the age of 5. Activities for badge include work crafts, physical activities, religious learning. The ‘famous five’, as part of achieving their Gold Award had to trek across North Yorkshire moors. The boys spent 3 nights, 4 days camping and trekking along the coast and across moorland, starting near Whitby and finishing near Filey. Wendy told Look Local

Wendy told Look Local “The boys have done so well, and their parents should feel very proud.”

“It was very tough for them as they had to carry all their equipment with them the whole way, but they did ever so well with amazing support from the parents”

The Earl of Wessex and Tani Grey-Thompson presented the awards and mingled with guests who enjoyed an afternoon tea in the Palace gardens.

The ‘boys’ have all gone onto study in further education.

Fox Valley Store Supports Fun Run Following a two year break the Penistone fun run returns this weekend and has the backing once again from Fox Valley’s department store, Sandersons.

The fun run raises money in memory of Penistone brothers Jack and Paul Sykes and is due to take place on the 12th June kickstarting the mayors parade. It’s the fifth year that the 2km run has been staged on the trails around Penistone to help raise funds for the Heads Together (Barnsley) Charitable Trust. The charity was set up in memory of the brothers who tragically lost their lives in a house fire started by their father when they were just 12 and 9. More than 250 people usually take part in the run raising vital funds that assist families in need of respite care and specialist equipment.

Penistone Fun Run: Claire Sykes (left) and Rebecca Dransfield of Sandersons department store.

FAMILY TO UNDERTAKE 100 MILE CHALLENGE FOR MILITARY CHARITY The Williams family from Penistone love doing things together, so it seemed only right that nine-year-old Molly would join her dad in his fundraising challenge for the Royal Air Forces Association. Molly has spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), so despite not being able to walk, she is joining her dad Julian as he attempts to walk 100 miles in 24 hours. She will be taking part using her Duet Tandem Wheelchair bicycle, with the help of her mum May, sister Anya (11) and brother Edmund (7). They will complete 84 laps of the athletics track: one lap for every night Molly has spent in critical care. Talking of her condition, Molly said: “SMA is a form of motor neurone disease, and I am a full-time wheelchair user. I know I will never walk, stand or even sit without support. I have already had two ten-hour surgeries at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. I have had my spine straightened with metal rods, both hips reconstructed and more emergency admissions than I can remember. Sometimes I need a special mask-and-air to help me breathe, and lots of other kit to get me through each day.”

200 FREE ICE CREAMS Covid stopped our amazing fayre the last 2 years, but we are back!

that attends on the day thanks to Stocksbridge & Upper Don TARA.

Not only are we back but we are also going to give away 200 FREE Ice-creams & 200 FREE swim passes to any child who lives in Stocksbridge & Upper Don

Come along for lots of fun for all the family including the amazing funfair, live music performances, Bradfield brewery beer tent, John Crawshaw's BBQ and much more!

This year’s event will start at the Penistone Showground at 10am and runners are encouraged to dress up as a local superhero to celebrate the key workers that kept the community going throughout the pandemic. Sandersons Department Store has donated the medals which will be presented to all the finishers by Jack and Paul’s Mum Claire Throssell and television journalist and presenter, Christine Talbot. Claire said: “The support from the community we have had over the previous events has been fantastic and we are hoping for the same turnout this year to raise as much money as possible for this fantastic charity.

“We’ve suggested runners dress up as keyworkers to show our gratitude to those local superheroes who have kept our town

running throughout the past couple of years. “We’d like to say a big thank you to Sandersons for supporting the event again this year and providing the medals for all the runners.” Rebecca Dransfield from Sandersons said: “We are delighted to be supporting this fantastic community event in memory of two very special boys. We hope the event raises lots of money for Heads Together and we wish all runners the very best on Sunday.” Online entries cost £5 individually and £10 for a family entry of up to five people. You can register through the following link https://racebest.com/races/ hxuw2. Entries will also be taken on the day, the event starts at 10am with registration open from 9:30am.

SHEFFIELD WORKFORCE THE

‘BEST IN THE WORLD’ A ‘Strong’ Sheffield team of 263 have scooped a global industry award, beating 17 other global sites to win the accolade.

Welbilt’s Merrychef Sheffield Site in Provincial Park in Ecclesfield beat 17 global locations to win. A Sheffield factory that manufactures high speed ovens for use by global chains such as Costa Coffee and Starbucks, has beaten 17 production sites worldwide to win the Welbilt 2021 Site Excellence Award. Welbilt is a leading provider of commercial kitchen equipment and solutions, boasting a portfolio of over 12 globally recognised brands, from fryers to combinations ovens. The award was judged across five categories; safety, quality, delivery, productivity, and cost. The 263 strong Sheffield team not only excelled in productivity, operational cost management, and delivery performance, but also managed to increase production output by a staggering 92%. Colin Lacey, VP & Managing Director of Merrychef was proud to accept the award on behalf of his team:

Sheffield signs up to UK100 Net Zero Pledge Sheffield has signed up to national and worldwide movements to tackle climate change and become carbon neutral. The City Council has been praised by UK100 for taking the pledge, and for it's commitment for radical action from local authorities. UK100 is a network of highly ambitious local government leaders, which seeks to devise and implement plans for the transition to clean energy that are ambitious, cost effective and take the public and business with them. It supports decision-makers in UK towns, cities and counties in their transition to Net Zero. It is the only network for UK local leaders focused solely on climate, clean energy and clean air policy. To accelerate the transition to this Net Zero society, UK100 brings together local authorities across the country to share knowledge, collaborate, and petition the UK government with their collective power. They are working together to create flourishing communities - seizing the opportunities of technology to create jobs and establishing a nationwide project of renewal, focussed on local needs and ambitions.

“It’s fantastic to receive such a prestigious award and acknowledgement that despite the challenges faced from the coronavirus pandemic, Sheffield was able to maintain – and even raise our already premium, manufacturing standards! I’m incredibly grateful to the team here at Sheffield, and this award is evidence of their hard work and dedication.” Lee Wichlacz, GVP & Managing Director Americas, and Phil Dei Dolori, GVP & Managing Director APAC & EMEA, toured the Sheffield factory and met the hardworking teams before presenting VP and Managing Director of Merrychef, Colin Lacey with the award. Lee Wichlacz commented on Sheffield’s success: “In light of the supply chain and operational challenges we endured in 2021, I am very proud of the many accomplishments that were made at our sites across the globe. We demonstrated agility and flexibility in response to historically high customer demand. I want to say thank you to each of our Operations Teams for a great 2021, and a huge congratulations to the team at Sheffield for winning the Site Excellence Award.”

‘Citizen Scientists fill gaps in Sheffield rainfall data’ For the past two years Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust volunteers have been taking daily readings from back garden rain gauges around the Sheffield Lakeland area and they’ve recently reached a significant milestone, collecting their nine thousandth record at the end of last month. The project is running in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University, as part of a programme of natural flood management (NFM) work being undertaken by the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership. The Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Project is part of Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust and is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and players of the National Lottery. The natural flood management project is working with farmers, land owners and partners in upstream areas to put in place measures which help to ‘slow the flow’ of water through the landscape. The nature based solutions being built allow the landscape to hold water for longer, releasing it more slowly into streams and rivers, helping to reduce the risk of future floods in downstream areas like central Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster. The Sheffield Lakeland area on the western borders of the city, reaches from Redmires SSSI in the south, up to Langsett reservoir in the north. The area covers 145km2, and is an outstanding example of a living landscape, rich in history, with diverse habitats abundant in wildlife, vibrant communities and strong traditions. Researchers at Sheffield Hallam University are monitoring the effects of these NFM measures on the flow of water in the streams around the Lakeland area. Measures being used by the project include tree planting, pond creation, protection of boggy areas and the creation of ‘leaky dams’ made from natural materials. But to assess the effects of the nature based solutions properly requires a good understanding of the rainfall as well as the river flow, and this is where our citizen scientists come in. Rainfall can vary a lot over a small distance, for example, from one side of a valley to another due to local microclimates and landscape and our volunteers’ data is giving us a more detailed picture of where rain is falling across the Lakeland region. As we begin to feel the effects of Climate Change with more unpredictable weather patterns, nature based flood management techniques are going to become an essential part of managing our landscapes for people and wildlife.

How the role of GP receptionist has evolved to improve patient experience The role of GP receptionist has changed in recent years, they play a key part in helping patients get the right care, by the right healthcare professional at the right time. Now known as care navigators or care coordinators, receptionists have a much wider role than just answering phones and making appointments. There are currently unprecedented pressures across health services in Sheffield. This is in common with most areas of the country and is leading to huge levels of demand for GP services. Sometimes, seeing a GP isn’t the best option for the patient. In fact, studies show that 25-40% of consultations with a GP are unnecessary. Some patients may receive more appropriate care and advice more quickly elsewhere - for example, a physiotherapist for back pain, or a nurse for a skin rash - freeing up the GPs time for those who really need it. This is where care navigators come in. Care navigators receive comprehensive training and their role is to actively listen, to signpost people to sources of help, advocacy and support, and to help people play an active role in managing their own health.

or that we are trying to gatekeep appointments. This isn’t the case at all. By asking a number of questions from the patient we are able to make sure that we book them an appointment with the right healthcare professional, or if its more appropriate, signpost them to other services in the city. We will still book an appointment with a GP if the patient feels they need it but they may have to wait longer for this. “I really enjoy my job and the vast majority of our patients are lovely and polite - we’ve even had some of them thank us with chocolates and flowers. We hope patients realise we’re there to help them.” Dr Ben Allen, GP and Primary Care Clinical Director at NHS Sheffield CCG, said: “Care navigators are an integral part of the practice team, they work really hard to ensure patients get seen by the right healthcare professional. The information you give receptionist will ensure you get the right care, in the right way, by the right person. “All staff operate to strict guidelines and work under clinical supervision. As a doctor I trust them and you can trust them to treat all information given confidentially.”

like not having to attend their surgery in person when the problem can be safely dealt with remotely. Not only do most patients like telephone and online appointments, but it also stops covid from spreading and staff can get through to more patients, including those with urgent health needs. Dr Allen added: “The feedback we’ve had is that most patients like telephone and online appointments. It can save you time waiting for a face-to-face appointment or taking time off work to attend. Many illnesses can be treated by these remote consultations. For these reasons, we see fewer patients face-toface. If you are assessed as needing a face-to-face appointment this will always be offered.” This is the case at practices across the city. GP surgeries are working hard to cope with the additional demand which includes bringing in more staff in different professional roles, such as care navigators, to help. Extra funding and support are also being shared across South Yorkshire to make even more appointments available. NHS Sheffield CCG has invested in more evening and weekend appointments at extended access hubs across the city and are investing more in technology to improve communication and efficiency.

SPRING SPECIAL OFFERS SIZZLING SUMMER DEALS

Thail who has been a Care Coordinator at Chapelgreen Practice for 4 years, explains: “There is a misunderstanding that receptionists are being nosey when we ask for information from a patient,

Over the last few weeks, a new piece of play equipment has been installed at the Wadsley Park Village playground and is now open for business. The new ‘basket’ swing is designed to be accessible to all children and will hopefully become a favourite amongst park users. Local Cllr. Penny Baker commented: “During October 2021 we carried out a survey amongst local residents and playground users. It became clear very quickly that there was a desire to add a piece of equipment that could be accessed by all children, but particularly by those with a disability. Working with the team from the Parks department, we identified the right piece of equipment. Using our Ward Pot to fund the project we were able to ensure it was installed for this summer. The new swing is a real bonus and I am sure that it will be enjoyed by the local children.”

New Assistant Chief Fire Officer South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Authority (SYFRA) has appointed a new Assistant Chief Fire Officer.

Andy Strelczenie was appointed following a selection process which included a written application, operational assessment and three interviews - including a final one with members of the Fire Authority’s appointments committee. Andy has worked within the fire and rescue service for 26 years, originally at Hereford and Worcester Fire & Rescue Service before transferring to South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue. He was previously an Area Manager at SYFR and has been our Head of Emergen-

cy Response for three years, more recently overseeing Service Development, Business Fire Safety, HMICFRS inspection planning and our work with the National Fire Chief ’s Council. In his new role, Andy will lead on the delivery of South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue’s service improvement plan and community risk management plans.

Fire Authority Chair Cllr Tony Damms, said: “It’s incredibly important that our fire and rescue service is well led, which is why the selection process for senior roles such as this is so rigorous. The qualities Andy demonstrated during the process will all be needed to drive forward improvement

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Cricket: Stocksbridge post big total

Price top scores with 72 Stocksbridge 1st XI 251-6 (M Price 72, S Perry 56, J Newton 37) Whiston Forge 200-8 (J Newton 4-61)

The 1st XI made the journey down the M1 to take on Whiston Forge looking to build on three consecutive victories. After captain Andy Hibbert lost the toss, he was very surprised when his side were asked to bat on what looked like a very batting friendly wicket. Openers Matt Price and Andy Hirst got the Green Army off to an excellent start as the pair soon brought up a 50 partnership before Hirst fell for a well made 25. Steve Perry was promoted up to 3 for the day and himself and Price put Whiston to the sword. The pair went about their work in wonderful fashion, both batters finding the boundaries regularly and ticking the score along nicely. Price brought up an excellent half century with a straight drive for 4. Quickly after this Perry didn’t want to be outdone and clubbed a huge 6 to also bring up his half century in style. A superb 109 partnership from the pair put the 1st XI in an extremely strong position. Both Price (72) and Perry (56) were removed in quick succession but the pair had laid down an excellent foundation for a mammoth total. The solid base enabled the middle and lower order to come in and score quickly and freely, Jack Newton led the way in the final overs with a quick fire 37 but contributions from Joe Hibbert, Dave Smith and Cal Haywood saw the 1st XI post their highest total of the season as they made 251-6 from 46 overs. In response Whiston Forge knew they were up against it but on a very good batting deck they were still in with a chance. Andy Hibbert got a breakthrough in his opening spell but Forge looked more then up for the fight as just past the halfway mark they found themselves 113-1. This seemed to spark Stocksbridge in action as they soon realised that they couldn’t just go through the motions if they wanted to win this game. Callum Haywood dented Forge’s chances as he removed both set batsmen in quick succession, this included a superb diving catch from captain Andy Hibbert for one of the wickets.

The pair bowled superbly in tandem to completely take the game away from Forge. Joe Hibbert kept it tight from one end bowling with real pace and accuracy forcing the batters to come after Newton. This played straight into Newton and the Green Army’s hands, Newton’s flight and spin tempted the

Newton went on to finish with excellent figures of 4-61 as the Green Army restricted Forge 200-8 from 46 overs to complete a 51 run victory and make it four wins on the spin.

Stocksbridge 2nd XI 153-7 v Rockingham Colliery 3rd XI 154-7 Batting first, Stocksbridge posted a slightly below total of 153-7. After crumbling to 12-3, Stocksbridge did well to resurrect any form of total, with Dave Codd top scoring with 46. The returning William Cavanagh added some late runs, finishing on 29 not out. The Rockingham reply got off the worst possible start, with opener Dave Smith being clean bowled by skipper Thwaites 2nd ball of the innings. Thwaites struck again, closely followed by Paul Hargreaves, leaving Rockingham 33-3. Stocksbridge managed to take some control of the middle overs, with Hargreaves and Cavanagh in particular keeping things tight. However, Rockingham managed to form a couple of meaningful partnerships, steering themselves over the line with just 2 overs remaining. 2 wickets each for Thwaites, Cavanagh and debutant Jenson Beever. Stocksbridge 2nd XI 84-1 beat Green Moor 2nd XI 80-2. Stocksbridge hosted local rivals Green Moor this Sunday in a last 16 cup tie. Following continuous delays and drizzle, the captains eventually agreed on a 10 overs per side game. Stocksbridge captain Thwaites won the toss and elected to field. Green Moor started well, looking to post a formidable total.

Stocksbridge's reply got off to a good start, with Siddall and Murfin opening. Murfin looked in fine form, smoking 2 huge 6s as Stocksbridge moved to 45-0 after 6 overs. The game began to get tighter and tighter, with Stocksbridge requiring 8 from the final over. Amazingly, it all came down to the final ball, with Stocksbridge requiring 1 to win. Haywood smashed it for 4, leading to scenes of jubilation in the Stocksbridge camp. Stocksbridge now go into the quarter finals, after beating a side from 2 divisions above them.

From here on in Stocksbridge looked in total control, Forge had flashes but the points looked set to be heading back to Stocksbridge thanks to spells from Joe Hibbert and Jack Newton.

Angram Bank Park Improvements Results of Community Survey 2022

Introduction Over January and February 2022, Ecclesfield Parish Council in conjunction with Sheffield City Council undertook a household survey of residents who live close to Angram Bank Park. Ecclesfield Parish Council in conjunction with Sheffield City Council and the local community are currently in the process of placing a multi-use games area (kindly donated by Thorncliffe Community sports) on the site. The purpose of the survey was to seek resident’s views about a further proposal for the park aimed at improving its security. The park has been the subject of incidents of trespass and anti-social behaviour.

Key findings The following section provides a summary of the key findings: • 62 of the 67 respondents said yes to the proposal. This equates to an approval rating of 92.5%. 5 (or 7.5%) of respondents said no. • When asked ‘Any comments you would like to make?’, 33 comments were received. The most frequently mentioned was the need to stop quads, scooters and motorbikes (mentioned 8 times), followed by fencing preferred (mentioned 4 times) and want more things for younger and older children to play on; more dog waste bins and generally making the park safer for families (each mentioned 3 times).

This proposal was the placement of boulders around the grassed edge of the site, placed in between existing trees. Wildflower seed would be planted around the boulders to give a more natural appearance and provide a habitat for wildlife. Access paths would be cut through the grass. In addition, measures would be taken to manage access to the car park including a height restrictor and knee-high rail. The park is owned and managed by Sheffield City Council. The questionnaire was developed jointly by Ecclesfield Parish Council and Sheffield City Council. A copy of the questionnaire was delivered by hand to 249 households. The questionnaire could be completed in paper form and returned to the Parish Council by hand or using the supplied stamp addressed envelope. Alternatively, it could be completed electronically. A total of 67 completed questionnaires were received. The number of valid returns represents a 27% household response rate.

‘Star’ striker leaves Steels

Rugby looking to recruit New Stocksbridge Rugby Club Captain, that man Adam Frith, is on the hunt for new recruits.

Luke Mangham has left Stocksbridge Park Steels and has signed for Belper Town. The striker signed for the Steels back in 2017 from Frickley Athletic having been a long term target for former manager Chris Hilton. He would follow in the tradition of Stocksbridge’s great strikers and become a key player over his five years at the Eco Power Stadium. He has been the leading scorer for Stocksbridge in the last three seasons and won the three Player of the Season awards this year. Stocksbridge manager Ian Richards said: “We cannot thank Luke enough for his leadership, attitude, commitment and quality during this season.” “He is an example and role model to other in how to conduct yourself as a player and when leaving to challenge yourself at a higher level.” “We wish him every success at Belper Town and he knows he is welcome back at the club anytime.” Further to this news, Ian Richards had a message to send to the fans of Stocksbridge. “Currently, we are working hard behind the scene planning, retaining and recruiting for next season.” Photo: Luke Mangham in action by Pete Revitt

Next season is fast approaching and the club are looking to field two solid XV’s as well as blooding the younger element, with some former colts taking the plunge. ‘We always welcome new players of any ability, age or location’ said Frith enthusiastically, adding ‘we have a newly formed Coaching team to facilitate this, which will be announced shortly’ he added. Pre season rugby training Stocksbridge are set to begin pre-season on the 29th June at 6:30 pm at Coal Pit Lane, under the new coaching regime, continuing each Wednesday, same time.
