Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir’s golf day at Stocksbridge Golf Club on Friday raised £2,500 for the Children’s Hospital in Sheffield. The event was organised by choir top tenor Brian Pigott who started the fund-raiser 27 years ago and has been the driving force behind the event ever since. Dransfield Properties made a donation for the prizes and local businesses gave support including the choir’s main sponsor, Bradfield Brewery, Sheffield Mutual, GenFab and Stocksbridge Co-op. The choir, conducted by Daniel Timmins and accompanied by Kim Kaye, gave a concert in the evening to say thank you to the club for its long-standing support. Golf club official and former choir chairman Frank Milnes conducted an auction. Choir chairman and golf club member Mick Siddall presented cheques of £1,250 each to Anna Jenkins, consultant oncologist at the Children’s Hospital, to go to the Oncology

Golf club president John Yeates thanked the choir for its performance saying:: “It’s by far the best we’ve heard you sing here in the club”. The choir sang at the opening of the Bolsterstone Village Fayre the next afternoon and were amazed and delighted to have their singing briefly drowned out by the magnificent sound and sight of a low-flying Lancaster bomber from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire on its way to an event in Derbyshire.

Cuts to public transport –politician’s response Following the news that South Yorkshire will see its bus services reduced by a third, leading politicians have spoken out. Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said:
“Sheffield is England’s fourthlargest city, and we deserve a public transport system that
“We are doing all we can to improve public transport infrastructure to make journeys by public transport, walking and cycling quicker and more efficient, but we cannot make significant improvements without a proper bus service in place that serves everyone in our local communities.
South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard said: “We are now facing the immediate threat of the biggest and most damaging cuts for a generation.

“People in Sheffield and Rotherham will feel the brunt of these brutal cuts initially next month when private bus companies withdraw their services on the less profitable routes. Private sector bus companies will begin removing a third of South Yorkshire’s bus network as early as July. This will be followed by further cuts in October when the government withdraws its post-covid funding for buses.

“Public transport is essential for people to get around our city, and it is disgraceful to see our transport system facing yet more cuts to services which will impact on everyone from the elderly who see buses as a lifeline for getting out of the house, to young people who depend on buses to get to school and college every day.
meets the needs of people living and working across our region and ensures that they can get to where they need to go. It is simply not good enough for government to continue to under-fund our buses and limit people’s opportunities to work, education and business growth as well as helping us to tackle the environmental challenges.
