Young Mum told lump is result of breast feeding later diagnosed with terminal cancer A woman who doctors refused a biopsy and a mammogram after she complained of a painful lump on her breast has now been diagnosed with an incurable cancer that has since spread to her brain and other parts of her body, writes Maynard Manyowa for Yorkshire Live. Faye Downing, from Sheffield, was 25 when a lump suddenly appeared on her breast. A GP referred her to the NHS Breast Clinic. But, the breast clinic refused to perform a biopsy or mammogram, telling the young mother that she was "too young" and that the lump was "not fibrocystic". Faye's family say the lump only got bigger after that. Faye, who had been breastfeeding at the time returned to the breast clinic, but was again turned away, and told the changes in her breast
were normal and the result of "breastfeeding a newborn baby". Faye's condition continued to deteriorate and she returned to her referring GP. When she returned to the breast clinic, determined to get to the bottom of her pain and the lump, Faye's worst fears were confirmed when this time a biopsy and mammogram revealed she had cancer. The diagnosis came at the height of the pandemic and Faye was forced to deal with the news and pain alone. As the young mother, now 29, battled the cancer, doctors discovered a tumour on her brain. Faye, who has two children, Freddie who is five-years-old and Marnie, who is two-years-old underwent several rounds of chemotherapy without success. Her sister Hannah Turner, 36, and father Clive Downing, 60,
writing on behalf of Faye's family said: "As if our girl hadn’t been through enough she was then told from her check-up scans that the cancer had spread to other parts of the body she continues to fight so hard and be so brave for her children she’s gone through countless rounds of chemotherapy of all different kinds but it keeps failing on her. "We are incredibly proud of Faye. She’s been amazing through all of this never moaned once and just carries on as normal. She is bossing this awful disease." Unfortunately, doctors have since told Faye that her cancer is terminal and that "this will be her last Christmas with her kids". Her family said: "Just days ago at her hospital appointment she was told heartbreaking news by her consultant this would be her last Christmas with her children."

He is said to be lucky to have survived and is making slow progress in a stroke rehab unit. The staff at the stroke rehab unit believe that Rich, a long distance HGV driver, can make a good recovery with intense inpatient rehabilitation, but this is rarely funded by the NHS and is very expensive. In order to give Rich the best chance of recovery and a better quality of life going forward, wife Claire has set up a JustGiving page and has a target of £50,000.
“All Rich wants to do is live his life to the fullest, no matter what that may be, at home with James and me. Church celebrates 150 years St. Saviour’s Church, Mortomley, High Green
In August, the Parish Church of St. Saviour at Mortomley ,High Green, Sheffield will celebrate 150 years of faith, worship and service to the community. The church was consecrated on August 4th 1872 by the Archbishop of York, and was built in memory of Parkin Jeffcock, the eldest son of John & Catherine Jeffcock of Cowley Manor. Parkin was a mining engineer who had charge of several local coal mines, including the Old Oaks Colliery near Hoyle Mill at Barnsley. In the afternoon of December 13th 1866, he received a telegram at his office in Derby saying “Come quickly, the Oaks is on fire”. Parkin immediately caught a train to Barnsley and went to the mine to assess the situation. Descending the shaft with a rescue party, he worked through the night, restoring ventilation, putting out fires and looking for survivors. He was still working the next day when a great explosion occurred, killing Parkin and all but one of the rescuers.
The mineshafts had to be sealed to quench the fires. When the shafts were reopened six months later, Parkin’s body was found, and later buried in Ecclesfield churchyard. At the time it was Britain’s worst mining disaster, with 361 men and boys killed, plus 40 pit ponies. Parkin & his family were dedicated to the expansion of the Anglican Church and had built a chapel of ease at Mortomley in 1860 as a prelude to a full church, which was a particular passion of Parkin. His family could think of no better memorial to their son than the church he had wanted. The church, which took nine months to build, seated 250, and was funded by public subscription at a cost of £3000. From Tuesday Aug. 9th, the church will be open from 10.30 till 4.00 for visitors to view an exhibition of photographs and memorabilia, with light refreshments available. The week culminates in a service of celebration and thanksgiving on Sunday 14th Aug. at 11.00.
EXHIBITION: St. Saviour’s Church will be open for visitors to view photographs and memorabilia

Dodworth house Return of fire accidental the Steel
Valley Ride On Saturday 23rd July over 100 riders took up the challenge of the Steel Valley Ride for the first time in three years. Both the riders and the organisers were happy to be gathering at the event HQ in Fox Valley again, with nervous excitement buzzing in the air.
A joint investigation carried out by the fire service and police has found that the cause of a fire on Woodland Drive, Barnsley on Tuesday 19 July was accidental, not deliberate. The fire is believed to have started in a garden shed and was electrical in origin. Our thoughts are with all those residents affected by this devastating fire.
The Steel Valley Ride is organised by local conservation charity the Steel Valley Project as an annual fundraising event in partnership with Trek Bicycle Sheffield Fox Valley. The region is facing the loss of a third of its bus network, as government funding to help operators get through the pandemic comes to an end. The first of the cuts came into effect on July 24th, with further routes at risk in October, including commercially-operated school buses. South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard and local leaders agreed to use up to £5.1m to protect these services over the next two years. South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said; “Our communities are facing the very real threat of the biggest and most damaging cuts for a generation, thanks to this broken system which is failing passengers. “At the moment we have limited powers over our bus service. I’m doing everything I can to speed up the process of getting the right powers in place, but until then, I’ll work hard to

The routes under threat are the ones which also carry children paying 80p fares. Most buses in South Yorkshire are run by private companies. Under the
Heavy rain had battered the course 24 hours earlier, but the riders had fair conditions on the day making for some fast times out on the 31 mile route. All but a handful of riders made it successfully to the finish, though everyone had a smile on their face whether they made it back on two wheels or four.
“We’re going to be talking to people across the region about how to make the best use of the public money we have to support our buses, and how we can make South Yorkshire’s bus system better for everyone.” SYMCA lost out in the most recent round of government bus funding. Mayor Oliver Coppard has called on the government to provide emergency funding to keep the service going while SYMCA is in the process of seeing if it can take buses back into public control through the franchising process.

The money raised from the Steel Valley Ride will help the project continue to improve the local environment and train volunteers as it has been doing for over 30 years. First time rider on the event Richard Pearson said “…great event, and a great route that was very well planned and signed. Many thanks to the organisers and the event volunteers!”. There was a £150 voucher available to one of the first 50 entrants on the ride, with the prize draw being made by Andy Cook the manager of Trek Bicycle Sheffield on the morning of the event. Congratulations to Tim Whittaker, not only for completing the gruelling route in a good time but also for taking home the £150 voucher. Andy Cook, manager of Trek Sheffield said “It was great to see so many riders of all ages and abilities taking part in the ride. Trek Sheffield are always keen to support this event due to the excellent work carried out in the local area by the Steel Valley Project, we are already looking forward to next year.” For more information on the countryside management work carried out by the Steel Valley Project, please visit www.steelvalleyproject.org

Green award for school Royd Nursery Infant School have been successful in achieving the Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction Award. The Eco-Schools Green Flag is an internationally recognised award and celebrates excellence in environmental action and learning. Class teacher and Eco Team Leader, Miss Rawding commented, “I work closely with Mrs Heathcote who has a team of children known as our ‘Eco Warriors’ to launch campaigns for the whole school to take part in. Our Eco project empowers and motivates the children at Royd to drive change for a more sustainable planet and raises environmental awareness in our school and local community.” After achieving The Green Flag Award in 2020, children at Royd have been working determinedly towards their renewal applica-
tion and are thrilled to have been awarded The Green Flag with Distinction Award.
The Green Flag with Distinction Award is the highest possible level that a school can be awarded. It gives added recognition to those Eco schools who go a little further with their Eco projects. Mr Sly, Deputy Headteacher added “Royd is committed to adding value to our children’s lives. If we are able to give them the opportunity to lead change within their school then hopefully this will positively impact them at home as well as in their wider community. I am delighted that staff and children’s commitment to the project has been recognised, as their passion and efforts are admirable. Teaching Assistant, Mrs Heathcote who also leads the Eco Team commented “Our Eco Team have
worked on many projects this year including ‘Switch Off Fortnight’, ‘Waste Week’ and ‘Walk To School Week’. Children know the importance of saving energy, carbon emissions and other valuable resources where possible. They actively monitor whether rooms that aren’t being used at playtimes and lunchtimes have things such as computer screens and lights turned off when they aren’t being used. The children even had a clipboard and checklist for each classroom so they could report their findings. They really enjoyed trying to catch the teachers out and telling them that they needed to turn things off. It creates a positive culture around school as well as healthy competition as each class wants to save the most amount of energy”.
“The tournament is not just about football on the pitch. It’s also about giving the fans a good time, helping them to visit the host cities safely and to enjoy the culture of the host nation. Having the conference in the city which is home to the world’s first football club Sheffield FC, and in one of its most iconic venues just adds to this” said Bev Ward, Senior Host City Manager for the UEFA
Women’s 2022. “Being able to share everything we’ve learnt with our friends at UEFA is really important because we want the tournament to have legacy for women’s football and future championships.” Sheffield United supporter The Very Reverend Abigail Thompson, Dean of Sheffield is delighted the Cathedral is hosting the conference. “It’s been wonderful to welcome international guests wearing their nation’s colours into the Cathedral over the past month. Few cities are passionate about their football in quite the way that Sheffield is, and it’s been great to share in the excitement of this tournament and enjoy all the good humour and friendly rivalry… and I’m delighted to see that the mighty Lionesses are doing us proud! Hosting a conference of such significance is a wonderful opportunity to show everyone how beautiful the Cathedral is, and how versatile it can be as a venue for so many different cultural events. We are a place for all people and a place to celebrate and explore new possibilities, which is exactly what this conference is all about.” Sheffield Cathedral will be closed to visitors until 2:30pm on 27 Wednesday. The Book of Common Prayer Holy Communion will take place in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at 10:30.

New Pump Track
The brand-new Hillsborough Pump Track has now been fully completed at Hillsborough Park and an official launch event is planned for August. Designed for ‘all wheels’, ages and abilities, the fully tarmacked pump track includes a main track, learn to ride area and an early riders’ track. It is open every day and can be used for free.
A man is in a serious condition in hospital today, after he harassed Tramlines staff and assaulted two police officers before suffering a fall while attempting to flee the scene.
The £330k facility, built by the renowned track specialists Velosolutions UK, was developed by Sheffield City Council Parks & Countryside Service in partnership with Access Sport, Move More and Sheffield Hallam University.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said that at around 9.20pm on Friday, July 22, police officers working at the Tramlines festival were alerted to reports that a man had been threatening and abusive towards event staff on Middlewood Road.
An associated community club is currently in development and there are plans to provide regular club nights, training and coaching sessions. The club will have access to a range of BMX bikes, helmets and pads so that everyone can have a go, even if they don’t have their own bike. The ‘all wheels’ track is also suitable for scooters, roller blades and skateboards.
They added: “The suspect is reported to have assaulted two of the attending police officers, before running from the scene. It is understood that while leaving the scene, the suspect fell and suffered serious injuries.
The project has been supported by funders including The London Marathon Charitable Trust and the Places to Ride programme, which is delivered by British Cycling, Sport England and the Department for Digital Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). An official launch event will be held at the Hillsborough Pump Track on August 5 2022.
Last Sheffield Little Mester knives to go on display A collection of knives made by Sheffield's last "'Little Mester" is to go on display, writes the BBC. Stan Shaw, who died at the age of 94 in 2021, made knives for The Queen, US presidents and Elvis Presley. He worked for almost 80 years as a self-employed craftsman. When he retired in 2019, Mr Shaw continued to demonstrate his skills to the public at Kelham Island Museum. Now 59 of his creations will be exhibited at Sheffield's Cutlers' Hall. The blades are from a collection owned by Mr Shaw's family who bought them from another cutler. His son Kevan Shaw said the whole family were "delighted" that the knives would be on a long-term loan to the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire, which is a trade guild for local metalworkers founded in 1624.
"Dad would have been so proud to see his work on display for all to see and it is a fitting tribute to his skill and all he did to promote the heritage of Sheffield's 'Little Mesters' that the Cutlers' Hall itself will be the location for this amazing collection of knives", he said. The current Master Cutler James Tear said: "They are a significant part of the continuing story of the "Little Mester" and they form part of the history and legacy of cutlery manufacturing in this City and Region". "The knives demonstrate design and engineering skill of the highest level and are the work of a man who valued quality and perfection. "Stan's skill and craftmanship should be an inspiration to all who see them." An appeal to raise funds for a permanent memorial and trail recognising the work of Stan Shaw and the other Little Mesters was launched in February.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

I write this as on objective appraisal of a not uncommon tactic, but do not wish to be drawn into personal exchanges, hence I will not provide my name to this article.
I would like to comment on the letter published in the edition dated 21July 2022, under the heading The City Council originally proposed a scheme to ‘Barking dog’. close Bridge Hill at its junction with Langsett Road North/South to tackle injury collisions involving For the writer, this must be a continuation of the people on bicycles and motorcycles being hit by same, or very similar, letter published last summer people driving out of Bridge Hill into Station Road. on this subject. Crash victim’s resilience motivates students Barnsley College welcomed Craig Walton to talk about motivation, psychological theories and how a positive mindset helped him overcome the trauma of being involved in a serious road traffic accident. Craig came to the College as an inspirational speaker to talk about a serious head-on collision with another driver, which resulted in him being trapped in his lorry for over an hour. He was cut out of his cab and airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary where his right leg was amputated below the knee, changing his life forever. Since then, Craig has undergone intense rehabilitation and has overcome cripplingly low selfesteem and confidence by investing his time in setting achievable goals linked to mental health, physical training for special populations and personal life. Craig said: “My visit to the College was enjoyable; everyone was very friendly and welcoming and helpful with the extra support that I need.
“My talk was based around previous experiences that I have been through, and the loss of my lower leg after I was involved in a road traffic accident seven months ago. The struggles around these topics have helped me build resilience and find motivation in simple everyday life. This allows me to always stay on top of my mental wellbeing and keep myself in a positive mindset. “I felt the response from the students was really positive. I was asked a few questions around my struggles with mental health and how to pick myself back up if I do find that I am slipping into a depressive state or even just feeling low. I received questions on phantom limb/nerve pain. The students were engaged when I was talking, the staff were interested and asked some good questions about motivation and resilience too. “I believe my talk was very beneficial and if I just help one person along my travels, I will consider it a massive success. “I’m very thankful for the opportunity that the College provided
me with to share my story and provide motivation for others.” Kalam Neale, Esports Programme Lead at Barnsley College, said: “I’d like to extend a huge thank you to Craig on behalf of our students and staff. It was fantastic to have Craig in to speak to our students. His journey is truly inspirational. He covered a variety of topics including mental health strategies, psychological theories, motivation, personal training and exercise for special populations. “Students took a lot away from the talk both in regard to contextualising their academic studies and in finding motivation in their personal life around motivation, mental health, fitness and wellbeing; topics which are all extremely prevalent in today’s society.” To find out more about Barnsley College or to apply for a course starting in September 2022 call 01226 216 123 or visit www. barnsley.ac.uk

Sheffield to bid to host Eurovision 2023

LOOKING AFTER YOUR PENNIES Childcare top-up to cover summer activities. As the school holidays fast approach, many parents face having to organise extra school holiday childcare over the summer months. Working families can use the Tax-Free Childcare (TFC) scheme to help if they have children aged up to 11 years old (17 for those with certain disabilities). Jan Hall, Director at Sheffield based C21 Chartered Accountants comments: “The TFC scheme helps support working families with their childcare costs, and what many families don’t realise is that it can be used to pay for accredited holiday clubs, childminders, or sports activities during the school holidays. “There are many registered childcare providers including school, football, art, and tennis clubs signed up across the UK that can be used for the TFC scheme. “The best way to save up TFC to use during the school holidays is for parents to pay into their account regularly and save up their TFC allowance.” Guidance on the Government website states that the TFC scheme provides for a government top-up on parental contributions. For every £8 contributed by parents an additional £2 top up payment will be funded by Government up to a maximum total of £10,000 per child per year. This will give parents an annual savings of up to £2,000 per child (and up to £4,000 for disabled children until the age of 17) in childcare costs. Jan adds: “The TFC scheme is open to all qualifying parents including the self-employed and those on a minimum wage. The scheme is also available to parents on paid sick leave as well as those on paid and unpaid statutory maternity, paternity, and adoption leave. “One thing to note is that to be eligible to use the scheme parents will have to be in work at least 16 hours per week and earn at least the National Minimum Wage or Living Wage. If either parent earns more than £100,000, both parents are unable to use the scheme.” If you have questions about how to apply for Child Tax Credits, the team at C21 Chartered Accountants are here to help on 0114 213 4730 or info@c21accountants.co.uk
Following the BBC’s announcement that Eurovision 2023 will be held in the UK, Sheffield will be entering a bid to become the host city.
Sheffield has a proven reputation for hosting major international events – recently including UEFA Women’s EURO 2022, as well as hosting the World Snooker Championship for over 45 years. Later this year, Sheffield will host the Rugby League World Cup, as well as the prestigious figure skating grand prix, the MK John Wilson Trophy. Sheffield’s main arena, the Utilita Sheffield Arena, is a 13,600 capacity venue, that delivers more than 100 events every year. We also have a thriving and diverse hospitality industry, with world-class hotels across our green city. Councillor Martin Smith, Chair of the Economic Development and Skills Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “Sheffield is made for hosting Eurovision – music runs through our blood and we put on a good show. We’ve been hosting the World Snooker Championship for over 45 years, we’ve welcomed thousands of fans to UEFA Women’s EURO 2022, and just this weekend Sam Ryder wowed absolutely everyone at Tramlines Festival. “We have the infrastructure, the venues, the hospitality, and the transport links. We also have one of the strongest creative and cultural sectors in the country.
Topping out for Sheffield’s first ‘zero carbon’ ready office Elshaw House, Sheffield’s first zero carbon ready office, celebrated an important construction milestone this week with the building reaching its peak height. A key part Heart of the City – the transformative city centre development programme being led by Sheffield City Council and their Strategic Development Partner, Queensberry, Elshaw House is situated between Wellington Street, Carver Street and Backfields. The office’s striking industrialstyled metal frame, which has now reached its highest point, will incorporate approximately 70,000 sq ft of innovative, flexible and comfortable workspace over seven floors. The ground floor will house new retail and food and beverage units. Decarbonisation of the grid will ultimately make the building, which is designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, an operationally carbon zero workspace. The fully electrified building drastically reduces operational energy through mixed mode ventilation, coupled with innovative cooling embedded in the fabric of the building and the latest in heat pump technology. Thanks to the reuse of existing materials, lean design and low carbon choices, the structure also has 40% lower embodied carbon than average.

Dawn Broom surges for the finish line at the Laxton 10k
In a relatively quiet week for Penistone Footpath Runners and AC, three members took part in the Blacka Moor Chase Fell Race. Over 4.2 miles with 827 feet of climbing, Daniel Limb was first back in 22nd place in 34:45. Becky Timms was fifth F40 in 39:28 whilst Steve Storey was fifth M60 in 43:41. At the Bradfield Bash Race over 5 miles Dan Limb was fifth in 42:58 whilst Simon Pike was 8th in 45:22. Phil Montgomery finished 44th in the English Fell Championships at the Old Crown Round Fell Race in a time of 4hrs 15 mins on the 23.21 mile course. On the roads, Dawn Broom finished first F5059 in the Laxton 10k Road Race near Goole in a time of 44:57.
Last week saw the return of the annual Cricket match at Penistone Cricket Club between members of the Penistone Round Table and the Penistone 41 Club.
This year it was the Round Table who took the spoils just edging the game by 3 runs to claim the match corker for the first time in a number of years.
This is always a well attended event and this was no different with plenty enjoying the BBQ and cheering on the exceptional cricketing skill on show.
Thanks to all who came along and to Bruce for organising a great social event. We will be back next year to defend the title.
The two teams enjoyed what was a friendly (for the most part) and competitive game with good efforts from both teams as they tried to claim the bragging rights.
Heatwave Stops Play
Remarkably, in this temperate isle, hot weather stopped play at the Golf Club earlier in the week. With temperatures approaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday and Tuesday, the golf course was virtually empty as members headed for the shade. It resulted in the cancellation of a Dragons League match against The Grange GC being moved to early August.
Before and after the two days of intense heat there was still plenty of action. The Gents July Medal overall winner came from Division 2. Andrew Taylor (18) won with a net 61. Second and third places also came from Division 2, with Richard Grimmer (18) also carding a net 61, but losing out on countback. Steve Cunningham (21) was third with a net 64. The leading scorer in Division 1 was Paul Blake (9) with a net
65. Neil Elliott (11) was just behind Paul with a net 67. Dave Buxton (8) took third place in Division 1, beating several other players with the same score on countback. The League Team completed their promotion season from Division 5 with an away win at Doncaster Town Moor GC. The 5-3 victory left them 1 point behind Divisional Champions, Roundwood GC, who secured their position with 4-4 draw away to Bondhay GC. The Dragons Section competed for the Seniors July Medal on 20 July. The overall winner came from Division 2 with Bill Boucher (28) scoring an excellent net 61. Second and third place in Division 2 went to Charlie Dale (24), with a net 67 and Ash Nightingale (29), with a net 68 respectively. Division 1 winner was Steven Haigh (15) with a net 64. He
pipped John Sykes (19), who also scored a net 64, into second place on countback. Ian Batty (18) was third with a net 70.
There have been three Pro's Prize Stableford competitions through the week. The first, on 21 July, was won by Danny Costello (3) with 38 points. Alex Grimmer (10) also scored 38 points, but lost out to Danny on countback. Paul Cleary (26) was third with 37 points. Rob Wakefield (24) also scored 37 points, but lost out to Paul on countback. The second Pro's Prize was on 23 July and with a large field the competition was split into two divisions. The overall winner came from Division 2, with Kevin Pursall (27) scoring an impressive 44 points. Bill Boucher (27), also from Division 2, was overall second with 40 points. Third place went to Joe Sedgwick (6), from Division
1 also with 40 points, but losing out to Bill on countback. The last Pro's Prize of the week was on 24 July, with Chris Naylor (8) leading the way with 40 points. Dave Buxton (10) was second, but a long way back, with 34 points. Steve Cain (17) was third with 33 points. Finally, the Summer Mixed Foursomes took place on the 24 July, in the afternoon and in the middle of heavy rainfall. The competition was shortened to 8 holes, with Alison and Ian Sedgwick (11) winning with a net 27. Heather Evans and Steven Haigh (11) also carded a net 27, but lost out on countback. Helen Moffett and John Sykes (11) were third with a net 28.

Steels grab first win Stocksbridge Park Steels picked up their first pre-season win since 2020 after beating Eccleshill United 1-0.
manage it though. The Eagles were limited to long range shots which usually tested the fans behind the goal rather than Harrison Davison-Hale. They also sent plenty of crosses in but even with onrushing players, Davison-Hale was able to deal with everything sent his way with ease.
The only goal of the game came early on when pressure on the Eccleshill defence allowed a trialist to go one-on-one with the goalkeeper before finishing with aplomb. Steels were looking to build on a promising performance in the match against Belper Town and started off well. The pressing seen in other games would end up working wonders in this one on a goalkeeper that began the game in a skittish mood. Poole and the trialist worked together to force the keeper into a disaster of the ball and that landed with the trialist. He then went one-on-one with the keeper and blasted it past him to give the Steels an early lead. The pressing in the early part of the game would cause plenty of problems for Eccleshill. The goalkeeper struggled with it, sending more balls into the stand than onto the pitch for a while. Stocksbridge’s pressing almost got them another goal when the trialist won it high up in the left winger. He hit a good

ball into the box but it would end up getting caught under the feet of the attacking team and would be cleared by Eccleshill. As the first half continued, Eccleshill would get better and grow more into the game. Despite this, they struggled to break down a Steels defence that would be as
stubborn as it was in the first hour against Belper. They did try to use set pieces to their advantage and were close when one of their defenders headed just wide from a corner. They were also close to scoring with a turn and snapshot which ended up slamming off the fences behind the goal. This meant
Stocksbridge were leading going into half time. The second half was not something you would show friends you’d want to get into non-league football as it was low on quality. Eccleshill were getting more of the ball and they were trying desperately to break into the Steels box. They couldn’t
Stocksbridge Rugby return for pre-season training Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby have now returned for pre-season training, & are being put through their paces by the new coaching team of Andy Lawrence (Head Coach) supported by experienced half back Neil Francis along with former player Andy Fretwell.
Head Coach Andy Lawrence addressing his charges during a coaching session
New 1st XV Captain that man Adam Frith is put through his paces by experienced backs coach Neil Francis in preparation for the forthcoming season
The sessions are progressing well, the attendance numbers are strong, & there are a few new & returning faces to bolster the playing roster. The focus is on preparing for the opening fixture, the Sponsors Trophy to be held at Coal Pit Lane on 20th August, where refreshments will be available. This will serve as an excellent opportunity for Lawrence to see his new charges in action before the opening league fixture of the new season when Halifax will be the 1st competitive visitors on 3rd September. The Yorkshire hierarchy seem to have taken
note of constructive suggestions made by the Stocksbridge committee & have named a 12 strong team list for the Yorkshire Division 4 competition, meaning more & regular fixtures for all the clubs involved. Stocksbridge will be looking to be competitive in this league structure, & could even be an outside bet for a play off place given the strength of the squad. More new players are both expected & welcome to training at Coal Pit Lane on Wednesdays from 6pm, to join members of last season’s successful Colts team who are transitioning to senior rugby. There seems to be an air of excitement & expectation around the club, as we all look forward to the forthcoming season.
Stocksbridge were largely held in their own box during the half and while they did try to break, they often ended up bearing the brunt of a whistle happy referee who didn’t appreciate any physicality up front. They did have a moment to seal the win towards the end when the ball was played with some speed onto the left where Clarke Greaves had broke into the box. His shot didn’t have the power necessary but it did test the goalkeeper. Despite that not going in, Stocksbridge would get the win and their first pre-season friendly since they beat Ramsbottom United in 2020. Steels take on a Sheffield Wednesday XI midweek and then a home fixture against a Barnsley XI this Saturday 30 July 3pm KO. For more fixtures check out Steels website.
