Parking charges Man charged at Langsett with murder of Sheffield man

Residents of Langsett village are deeply concerned about a proposal by Yorkshire Water to impose parking charges at the Langsett Barn car park, next to Langsett Reservoir.

This popular car park is well used by local people and visitors from further afield who come to the area to walk, cycle, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. But residents and business owners in Langsett village believe that the decision to charge for parking here will have a serious detrimental impact on the community. Langsett Parish Council Chairman Cllr Peter Horner said “We know that if this scheme goes ahead, visitors will find alternative places to park. That means

parking dangerously on the verges of the A616 or on the narrow roads of the village, blocking residents and access by emergency vehicles.”

The owners of the 300year-old Waggon and Horses pub believe the car park charges could make their business financially unviable after two tough years during the pandemic. Rachel Battye, who owns the pub with her sister Vanda said; “we already struggle with walkers using our car park and preventing our customers from coming to the pub. If Yorkshire Water go ahead with the scheme, visitors to the area will park in our car park to avoid paying, and it could be the end of the

pub, which has been here for over 300 years”.

Penistone & Stocksbridge MP Miriam Cates has gotten involved, writing to Barnsley Council to urge them to reject the proposals by Yorkshire Water. She said, “Langsett Reservoir is a valuable local asset, and it should be enjoyed by all. Imposing charges at the car park will displace large numbers of cars into the surrounding area, with terrible consequences for the local community and businesses. I am calling on Yorkshire Water to think again”.

Stagecoach step in to save bus route

By George Torr, Local Democracy Reporter

HCT Group announced their Powells and CT Plus bus companies will close and services will stop running from Monday, August 8.

The larger buses are not able to cross the bridge at Fox Valley, so will use Manchester Road, bus bosses said.

Customers that have valid Powell’s bus tickets can continue to use them on the replacement Stagecoach services until August 14. Customers travelling along other routes in South Yorkshire previously covered by Powell’s Bus services can also travel on Stagecoach services along their route until August 14. Stagecoach Yorkshire bosses said a number alternative routes may help customers continueto travel.

Stagecoach Yorkshire will operate service 6 from Sheffield to Millhouses, 61/62 between Hillsborough and Low Bradfield and 201 from Chapeltown to Stocksbridge. The service 6 will run to the same timetable operated by Powells, as will the 61/62 service on Mondays to Saturdays. The 61/ 62 will no longer run on Sundays. Service 201 will have a new timetable and slightly different route in Stocksbridge.

Customers previously using service 49 can use Stagecoach 219. Customers previously travelling on Powell’s X20 can travel on Stagecoach services 22x and 226 between Barnsley, Wombwell and Manvers, 221 between Doncaster and Mexborough and 218, 218a and 220 between Mexborough and Manvers. Matthew Kitchin, managing director of Stagecoach Yorkshire, said: “I’m proud of the way our staff have responded to this situation and enabled us to act very quickly to maintain these links for passengers.

Sumo add their weight to St Luke’s volunteering days

“We are glad that we are able to minimise the disruption to customers and offer alternative routes, either from our current extensive network in South Yorkshire, or the routes that we are taking over from Monday.” Originally founded as Hackney Community Transport in 1982, HCT Group was established in 2008. It operates 19 services across South Yorkshire from its Powells depot in Hellaby, employing around 50 staff.

COUNCIL STATEMENT Terry Fox leader of Sheffield City Council said "Sadly we have very little direct influence over bus providers and for many years we have demanded more powers from government, and for more investment into public transport. But instead, we are seeing a managed decline of bus services throughout the North. “Your council is trying to do everything it can - we recently launched the city centre shuttle bus, Sheffield Connect, and have spent millions on improving roads and the connectivity of the network. But due to national lack of investment this isn’t counting for a lot in retaining decent and wideranging bus services in the city."

SHEFFIELD based video game developer Sumo Group swapped their studio for a spot of retail therapy as they joined St Luke’s Hospice as volunteers. A team from the award-winning company, one of the UK’s largest providers of end-to-end creative development services to the video games and entertainment industries, spent the day giving their time to the St Luke’s shops. Sumo Group’s Head of M&A Pat Luker said: “We had a fantastic time supporting St Luke’s. “Our team of 25 volunteers spent the day in two St Luke’s shops, working behind the scenes, sorting through donations and preparing items for sale. "It was great to get an insight into the key role the shops play in raising funds for the hospice.

"I would highly recommend a corporate volunteering day to any employer looking to have a team building day out of the office, whilst also giving something back to the local community. "Arranging the day was incredibly easy and it was really well run by the staff and volunteers at each site. "Our team really enjoyed it and it was great that we could make a small contribution to the amazing work that St Luke’s does. “We will definitely be back for another corporate volunteering day!” To find out more about corporate volunteering opportunities with St Luke’s, visit stlukeshospice.org.uk/ volunteer/corporate-volunteering

Dad praises A&E after wife almost gives birth in their car Phil Bessant, from Ecclesfield, has praised the care his wife received at the Northern General Hospital and Jessop Wing after his wife, Kathryn, went into quick labour in the back of their car.

Within six minutes Kathryn had given birth to baby boy, Joseph, in the A&E Department. “I know that they don’t get many births in the A&E Department, but everything was perfect. There were loads of staff around with plenty of warm towels on hand and the medical team were all great in keeping us informed about what was happening. We are also especially thankful to Dr Dan Bradbury, the Registrar in the A&E Department, who cared for Kathryn and delivered the baby.

Kathryn began displaying signs of labour on the morning of 30th July 2022. Husband Phil said: “I rang the Jessop Wing in the morning and they advised us to make our way to the hospital as it sounded like Kathryn was going in to labour.” “Kathryn’s mum came over to look after our other son, Evan, who is three years old, and we packed our bags and began driving to the Jessop Wing. Within 10 minutes it became apparent that the labour was happening a lot quicker than expected.” Phil and Kathryn were driving past the Northern General Hospital when Kathryn started feeling the urge to push.

“Once Joseph was born and everybody was happy with how they were both doing, the consultant made a phone call to the Jessop Wing so that we could get transferred to the maternity unit.” “I drove straight towards the A&E Department at the Northern General and there was just enough time for Kathryn to dive on to

a trolley and we were wheeled straight through to Resus where they had an empty bay.”

An ambulance took Kathryn directly to the Jessop Wing where she was checked over again by the Midwifery team.

“Everything was really straight forward from there. The midwives at the Jessop Wing told us to take our time, have a shower and gave us some tea and toast. The whole birth took place in about two hours, so it was rather a shock but we could not have asked for better care.” By 10am, Kathryn, Phil and baby Joseph were all back home with their other son Evan, and the family are all doing well. “I’m eternally grateful to all the staff in A&E and Jessop Wing for caring for my wife and delivering our new son safely and to Joe and his team at Yorkshire Ambulance for their assistance. I am incredibly grateful for the wonderful NHS care we received and I am also very grateful that I didn’t have to deliver our baby in the back of the car!”

Little Foresteers Valley Music Festival delighted to Music tuition awards scheme/sponsorship showcase their still open for applications artwork in woodland exhibition Children from Foresteers Outdoor Preschool in Oughtibridge were delighted to showcase their artwork in a woodland exhibition on their last day of term on Friday 22nd July. Kids aged two to five took part in an art workshop in the woodland with local cut paper collage artist, Kat Taylor, using a variety of recycled and found materials to make self portrait collages. Foresteers manager, Hayley Smith, says, “the children had a wonderful time working with Kat to make their portraits and it was great to see their individuality shining through in their artwork.” The children displayed their work in lollipop stick picture frames that they had made and decorated in the woodland, and took them home

after their end of term party as a memento of their time at Foresteers. “To me, art with kids is so much more than making a pretty picture,” says Kat. “It stimulates their imaginations and creativity, develops problem solving skills, makes them more observant, improves fine motor skills and reduces stress. The act of framing and exhibiting their work boosts their self-esteem and gives them a sense of pride in something they have created. Watching the children work, I saw deep concentration and focus; they each took great care in selecting their materials, carefully cutting and then arranging them just so on the page.” Family members were invited to the exhibition during a special event in the woods

with a tour of the setting and a chance to play with their children in their favourite areas, whether it be the mud kitchen, dough hut, stage or any of the other specially designed areas. Parents were thrilled to see their children’s artwork hanging in their woodland hut on what, for many, would be their last day of preschool before their next milestone of starting school in September. One Foresteers parent, Mark, said, “Our daughter loves art so was very excited to spend time with Kat learning about collage, even more so to show us her finished portrait and give us a guided tour of where all the magic happens; and Foresteers really is a magical place.”

The Valley Music Festival returned this year after Covid with six events of 7 days and is now able to support a number of young people who would like to learn and instrument in these demanding times. Apart from the music in the Piazza at Fox Valley over the weekend, there were four sell out concert events. The Live and Loud rock night for teenagers performing with a professional band. Seven schools making music over two evenings with packed out audiences and The Venue bursting at the seams and the fantastic Opera Night at Ponti’s that could have sold out twice over. So many parents and families said how wonderful it was to see so many young people making music

Valley Music Festival is all about supporting music education and giving back to school and individuals in our community. Each year we make awards to young people who might be finding it difficult to cover the cost of their instrumental/voice lessons. Applications for our awards scheme

are still open. People should check out the festival website for information and an application form. Applications will close by 20th August. (www. valleymusicfestivalco.uk/ awards/sponsorship-awardsscheme/) The festival awarded three Trophies for exception performance. Two Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir Raymond English Youth Awards were made to High Green Primary School Choir and to twelve-year-old Evie Wilson for an individual

performance. For the first time a new award in memory of Steve Osborn outstanding performance was awarded to Stocksbridge Infants school choir. Steve was one of the original people behind getting the festival going and passed away suddenly on the day of the virtual festival in during lockdown. Hilary his wife said that “Steve was enthusiastic about making sure that music education was on the agenda and available to everyone” – congratulations to you all.

Tala has pulled together a diverse, international team for No Time Like The Present, collaborating with choreographer and soloist of American Ballet Theatre, Zhongjing Fang.

Rebecca Maddox, Head of Business Development (Culture) at Sheffield City Council, said, “No Time Like The Present is an inspiring celebration of female-led dance in beautiful outdoor settings, created by South Yorkshire’s Tala Lee-Turton. Sheffield City Council is delighted to support the premiere at Sheffield Botanical Gardens”. Born and raised in Barnsley, Tala began dancing at the age of four when her talent was spotted by her local dance school. She was invited to audition for the Bolshoi and in 2012, at just 16-years-old, she won her place at the worldfamous ballet school.

Tala Lee-Turton said, “It’s a real privilege to be able to bring this production to the Botanical Gardens for the first time and I’m thrilled at the interest so far. How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. This summer The Moor is bringing a whole host of free family friendly entertainment to the city centre to keep your little ones entertained during the summer break. Between the 8th and 12th of August, The Moor will be a hive of activity with free activities for families to get involved with. There will be an area set up for visitors to sit and relax in the sunshine, whilst children can play a variety of giant garden games including Jenga, Connect 4, snakes and ladders, quoits, and noughts and crosses. Throughout the week The Moor will have a whole host of entertainers joining them. All the activities will be free to those attending the event. To kick start the event there will be free face painting on the 9th of August between 10:30am and 2:30pm. On the 10th of August there will be a balloon modeller on The Moor giving out free balloon creations to those attending the event. Balloon modelling will be held at regular intervals throughout the day (11am – 11:30am, 12:30pm – 1pm, 1:30pm – 2pm). Visitors can enjoy children’s story telling on the 11th of August. Come along and listen to

childhood classic at regular intervals (10:30am – 11am, 11:30am – 12pm, 12:30pm – 1pm and 1:30pm – 2pm). For the final day of the event there will be a magician on The Moor. On the 12th of August the children’s magician will be entertaining crowds with amazing magic tricks between 11am – 11:30pm and 1pm – 1:30pm. Visitors to the event will also have the chance to win one of four £25 gift cards for The Entertainer. There will be a Moor Fun in the Sun selfie pop up that children can put their faces in and have their photo taken. Upload your photo to the Moor’s Facebook page (@TheMoorSheffield) with the hashtag #MoorFunInTheSun for a chance to win. The winners will be picked at random on the 15th of August. Amanda Phillips, centre manager for The Moor, said: “We are looking forward to holding a summer event on The Moor this year. We hope that this event will attract visitors to the city centre over the summer holidays. “We understand how hard it can be to keep children entertained over the school summer break, and we hope this event will provide some much-needed entertainment to keep the little ones busy over the Summer”.

Potential new students will have the opportunity to find out about the wide range of part-time Hair and Beauty courses on offer at Barnsley College’s dedicated Open Day on Tuesday 23 August at 6.00pm at the Old Mill Lane campus, Church Street, Barnsley, S70 2AX. Rated outstanding by Ofsted, the College’s Hair and Beauty department offers a range of part-time courses in subject areas from Barbering to Hairdressing; Beauty Therapy to Nail Technology; and Laminating Brows to Eyelash and Eyebrow Tinting. Part-time courses are ideal for those who are considering a career change, keen

to upgrade qualifications or maybe just want to pursue a particular skill within the Hair and Beauty industry. Many courses are offered during evenings and weekends and therefore offer flexibility around other commitments. There is no need to book to attend the Open Day, simply drop into the College’s Old Mill Lane campus at 6.00pm to take part in informative presentations, tours of the facilities and speak to professional and experienced staff. Anita Wilkinson, Interim Head of Department for Hair and Beauty at Barnsley College, said: “The Open Day is a great way for visitors to speak directly with

our staff and to find out how the courses can help them to develop confidence and skills in Hair and Beauty. “Students who complete a course will get a nationally recognised qualification helping them in their next step, whether that is employment progression, continuing with further study or developing a new hobby.” For more information about the Open Day visit www. barnsley.ac.uk/events, call 01226 216 123 or email info@barnsley.ac.uk.

Beat the cost of living crisis and become a St Luke’s Night Strider!

Sheffield’s TRIB3 Chief recognised as one of the nation’s greatest business minds

Night Strider – sponsored by Pricecheck and Gripple - is the annual nocturnal half marathon and 10k walking challenge that this year aims to raise more than £100,000 towards patient care at Sheffield’s only hospice.

Kevin Yates, CEO of Sheffield’s TRIB3, has been shortlisted for the prestigious Great British Entrepreneur Awards in recognition of his influence on the fitness industry.

The 2019 challenge - the last before the Covid 19 pandemic put Night Strider on hold for two years - saw more than a thousand fully illuminated St Luke’s supporters take to the streets as darkness fell on the city on an October evening.

Since TRIB3 launched in Sheffield, the boutique fitness brand and local fitness store has gone from strength to strength and built a local community of TRIB3 Workout Warriors who support and push one another to achieve their health and wellbeing goals.

Now booking is open and already entries are coming in for Night Strider 2022, which makes its return on October 8 and promises to be the biggest and best Night Strider yet!

istration fee and extend the Early Bird deadline.

And to make sure everybody can join the fun and help raise vital funds for St Luke’s, the organisers have introduced a new pricing structure, including an Early Bird discount that now runs through to August 10.

“Anybody who has already signed up under the original pricing structure will be hearing from us very soon and will have the option to receive a refund of the difference or donate that money to our fundraising efforts.

Up to that date, it will cost just £5 per person to sign up - that price then rises to £15.

“And, of course, the only other thing we ask is that everybody who signs up and comes along on the night raises as much money in sponsorship as possible.”

“We have listened to our supporters’ feedback and are very aware that many people at the moment are struggling with rising costs,” said St Luke’s Director of Income, Media and Marketing Kathryn Burkitt. “But we very much want people to join us on what promises to be a great climax to our 50th anniversary celebrations and so we took the decision to cut the reg-

Starting out from Sheffield’s Peace Gardens, Night Strider takes in some of Sheffield’s finest locations as it heads out towards Ecclesall and Abbeydale before heading back to the city centre finish line. “Night Strider has become one of the best loved events in our fundraising calendar and although we held virtual versions in the past two years, there is nothing to

beat the atmosphere of so many of our friends and supporters getting together with the aim of doing something very special,” said Kathryn “Every year we find ourselves more overwhelmed than ever before by the response from our supporters and we are confident that 2022 will be our biggest and best Night Strider to date! “After two years away, we know this year’s participants will enjoy striding together more than ever before, knowing that with every step they take they will be helping us raise the vital funds needed to ensure we can continue providing the very best care for all our patients and their families for another 50 years. “Come along and join the party – it’s a great family night out for anybody who wants to support a fantastic cause.” To sign up simply visit stlukeshospice. org.uk

TRIB3 CEO Kevin Yates, who is a longstanding resident of Sheffield, is considered by many as a pioneer of boutique fitness and launched TRIB3 off the back of his 25 years’ experience building and improving businesses. Kevin has been the catalyst in driving the TRIB3 fitness store and studio in Ecclesall Road to raise more than £100,000 for the local St Luke’s hospice, with the support of the community of workout warriors, over the past five years. The latest fundraising efforts saw more than 80 TRIB3 Warriors run the Sheffield half marathon and raise £30,000 for the local charity. As a result of his innovative mind Kevin has paved the way for others and been shortlisted

for the Health & Beauty Entrepreneur of the Year award. Kevin said: “TRIB3 is more than a fitness brand, it's a community - it's truly a TRIB3. When we first set up the organisation, we wanted to create something that was bigger than us - something that would have a profound impact on people's lives and being a part of the local community is so important. I absolutely love our studio here in Sheffield and it’s a genuine pleasure getting to meet and train with our local community of brilliant Workout Warriors. “It’s an honour to have made the shortlist along with some other brilliant business minds. I’m already looking forward to heading down to London to meet entrepreneurs from different sectors to share ideas, learn from them and maybe create more partnerships and opportunities which can positively impact local TRIB3 customers!” The awards are set to take place in London on Monday, 21 November, and will bring together the UK’s finest entrepreneurs, judges, mentors, investors and partners to celebrate creativity and ambition.

Heggie rides in Yorkshire 10 mile Last Sunday Wheeler Paul Heggie travelled to Dishforth to ride in the VTTA Yorkshire 10 mile Open Time Trial on the old A1 to Thirsk and back. A tailwind made for a fast out leg but hindered on the return. His time of 26m 16s placed him 49th of 59 finishers and 10th of 13 in the 60-69 year age group. It also knocked another 12 seconds off his own club age record at 68.

Goal 84 minutes.

An absolutely fantastic result for us today, winning two-nil away at Lower Breck, not just for the team but for the club, our fans, the committee, the volunteers and everybody who takes part behind the scenes.

Having weathered the storm, Reece High broke free and put Nathan Keightley through. He gathered himself and slotted the goal in with great composure.

Half time substitution Cameron Simpson is replaced by Reece High as a precautionary measure to avoid injury. Church were under the cosh for the first 25 minutes of the second half. Several last minute blocks and a couple of decent saves from Harry Ambler kept Lower Breck out.

It’s an FA Cup victory, it’s the first FA cup game in charge for myself and my assistant John Whitehead so to make that happen today is massive to us. In the second half, to a man, I thought everyone was superb, defensively and going forward. We broke really well, Kieran Ryan was absolutely brilliant in the heart of the attack linking up with Reece High and with Nathan Keightley. We were immense going forward, we created a

lot of chances, we could have scored three or four, we got into the right areas but played the wrong pass or got cut out in the final third. I thought we defended really well, Ryan Johnson, Brett Lovell, James Young, Tom Charlesworth, Ash Ellis were excellent and all through the park Jordan Coduri, Eddie Newsome were absolutely superb. At the end of the game I went up to the club secretary Dave Hampshire and gave him a hug, it’s what it’s all about, it’s what me and my assistant John Whitehead are about, it’s what the lads are about, it’s winning

games for Penistone Church Football Club and the FA Cup makes it a little bit more precious, everybody wants to win in the FA Cup and we’ve done that today.

The early exchanges were fairly even. Home advantage seemed to help Lower Breck settle first. However, Church fashioned a couple of half chances too.

We face Brighouse Town away in the next round in two weeks time.

Goal 31 minutes

A report by Martin Webb This FA Cup extra preliminary round match kicked off on a still afternoon. The AstroTurf pitch had a long pile type of 'grass'. So the ball bobbled a bit when passed on the deck and the bounce was tricky for the Church players.

A crisp pass found Nathan Keightley. His superb chipped cross from the left was nodded home by Tom Charlesworth coming in from the right. Lower Breck 0 Church 1 Church managed the rest of the first half well, keeping Lower Breck at bay despite their best efforts.

It is a Practice requirement for staff to have evidence of Covid vaccination. For further information or an application pack, please contact Keren Cheverton Tel: 0114 2456370 or email keren.cheverton@nhs.net.

Closing date: 16/08/2022

Church continued to carry a threat for the remainder of the match, but no matter what Lower Breck threw at them Church held on for a first FA Cup win since 2018. The crowd of 104 had been thoroughly entertained by this pulsating Cup tie. Church will be delighted to get their first competitive win of the season, a clean sheet and a chance to take their second step towards Wembley!

Tigers claim big win

Sheffield Tigers 48 - 42 King’s Lynn

“It was a very, very difficult meeting,” Stead admitted.

SHEFFIELD took a big step towards play-off qualification with a significant 48-42 home win over King’s Lynn.

“They came and gave us a real tough match so fair play to them for that. “I was always reasonably confident that when the gate change swing came that we could get some points on the board and turn things round which we did, but it was tough.

It was a result which moved the Tru Plant Tigers 13 points ahead of the Norfolk side who are their closest challengers outside the top four. Missing 2017 British Champion Craig Cook through injury, it was a hard fought victory from the remaining six Tigers who battled away to maintain their 100 per cent home league record. It was King’s Lynn who dominated the starts in the early exchanges, opening up a six point lead with two 5-1s in the first three races. But Connor Mountain and Tobiasz Musielak replied in Heat Four to move back within two. Adam Ellis recovered from a disappointing opening ride to take the fifth before a 4-2 from Jack

“We had a couple of issues early on but they all did their bit and ultimately we got the job done. Holder and Justin Sedgmen levelled the scores at 18-18. The visitors nipped back in front before captain Kyle Howarth led successive 5-1s in Heats Eight and Nine with Mountain and Ellis to move the Tigers ahead by six. King’s Lynn were back level by Heat 11 before Sheffield capitalised on two exclusions for the visitors to move 42-36 in front by Heat 13.

The Stars sat on a 5-1 in the penultimate race until skipper Howarth produced an unbelievable match winning display, to charge around both visiting riders on bends three and four to bring the house down at Owlerton. And while a shared race in Heat 15 was enough to see King’s Lynn head home with a consolation league point, boss Simon Stead was thrilled with his side’s battling qualities.

“We would’ve liked to have sent them home with nothing but looking at the scorecard throughout the meeting, them going home with one point is probably fair - but tonight was all about us getting three points which we managed.” Jack Holder warmed up for the FIM Speedway Grand Prix of Great Britain this weekend by top scoring for the Tigers, winning three of his five rides.

Steels progress to FA Cup Stocksbridge Park Steels won their first FA Cup game in 11 years after beating Golcar United 3-0.

the early goal to create some nerves among the home fans. It was astounding though they didn’t score. A header on the six-yard box from thr Golcar attacker bounced down and beat Davison-Hale and some of the away fans had even started celebrating. However, it ended up bouncing off the bar and then post before the Steels were able to clear it away. Golcar also put some very dangerous balls into the box but no one was there to tap it in.

The Steels took the lead with a sweetly hit volley from Kurtis Turner in the first half. They doubled their lead just before half time with a spectacular own goal from Malikia Phillip. In the second half, a great free kick from Tomas Poole sealed the win. Stocksbridge got off to a great start and looked to get an early goal. Luke Rawson, making his first start after missing pre-season, and Poole were combining well and causing plenty of problems for the Golcar defence. However, the first major chance came from a set piece. Poole’s free kick was whipped in well and Charlie Oglesby’s bullet header beat the goalkeeper but also the post, heading wide. After the bright start from the Steels, Golcar grew into the game. This was their very first game in the FA Cup and knowing this would be in the history books forever, they were determined to make sure it wasn’t a loss. They would look dangerous in attack though the Steels defence worked hard and were strong in the air to prevent anything that’d test Harrison Davison-Hale. Kayle Price wasn’t too far off when he found space wide in the box but fired his shot wide. This allowed the Steels to score first. They got a deep free kick and while there was a delay to it being taken due to a scuffle between Ross Goodwin and Leon Henry in which both was booked, Poole was able to step up and put in a great ball. Graham Mclachlan

punched the ball away but Turner reacted first and volleyed it into the back of the net. Stocksbridge pressed after this and they’d have a second before the end of the half. Goodwin’s ball into the box was tantalising but Phillip looked to clear it away. He sliced the clearance backwards and it was lofted beautifully above Mclachlan’s head and then under the bar. It was the sort of own goal that’d make it on the Football Blunders videos that used to fill bargain bins across the country and not one he’d like to remember. It did mean Stocksbridge had a two goal lead going into half time. Golcar came with a point to prove in the second half and they wanted

Stocksbridge would go up the other end and score, effectively ending the game as a contest. Gareth Curtis was able to break clear of the defence before he was bundled over by Mark Everingham, who was booked for his troubles. Poole stepped up and hit the free kick sweet as anything, smashing it off the bar before it came back off an unlucky Mclachlan before going in. Stocksbridge had their chances to make it 4-0 as well. Most notably this was through Luca Defalco, the Stocksbridge born lad making his competitive debut. He broke through clear on goal after a successful break though before he could shoot, Lee Bradshaw was back to cover and make a key tackle. Golcar may have lost the game but they did end the game with some pride. They tried very hard to get a consolation and weren’t too far off. Alexander Hallam smashed one effort off the bar before another long range effort forced an impressive save from Davison-Hale. But Stocksbridge would soon confirm their win and end the 11-year wait for a win in the FA Cup.

Kyle Howarth recovered from a slow start to record three superb straight victories while Adam Ellis went unbeaten by an opponent in his three middle outings.

Tobiasz Musielak was solid with 7+2 while the reserves arguably provided the critical contributions outscoring their King’s Lynn counterparts 11-3 with Rising Star Connor Mountain bagging his highest score of the season. Sheffield head to basement side Peterborough next Monday (August 15, 7.30) for their latest Premiership outing. SHEFFIELD 48: Jack Holder 12, Kyle Howarth 10, Adam Ellis 8+1, Tobiasz Musielak 7+2, Connor Mountain 7+1, Justin Sedgmen 4, Craig Cook R/R. KING’S LYNN 42: Nicolai Klindt 13, Thomas Jorgensen 10+3, Josh Pickering 7+2, Richie Worrall 6+1, Richard Lawson 3, Frederik Jakobsen 3, Jason Edwards 0.

Successful Captain's Away Day

Stocksbridge Golf Club Captain, John Moss, led over 30 members (pictured) of the Club on his Captain's Away Day at Wakefield Golf Club in West Yorkshire. Blessed with good weather and a course that was challenging but great to play on, the Stocksbridge golfers had an enjoyable day.

There were plenty of prizes to play for on the day, the main ones based on best Medal and Stableford scores. Bob Haythorne won the Medal competition with a tremendous net 67 (5 under par). Stuart Roebuck was second with a net 70 and Alan Revill third with a net 71. The best Stableford score was won by Martin Bradwell with 38 points. Paul Cleary and Dave Jones both finished with 37 points, but Paul took second place on countback. Over the last week there has been a lot of competition golf at Stocksbridge as well. The main highlight was the Kilbride Cup,

a two round medal competition played on 6&7 August. With good weather and the course playing fast and in excellent condition, scoring was of a very high standard. Lee Hydes played two excellent rounds of net 61 and 62 to win with an aggregate score of 123 shots. Lee was comfortably clear of Chay Murphy and Martin Bye who both scored 127 shots. Chay took second place on countback.

The Gents also played the August Mid-Week Medal earlier in the week. The Division 1 and overall winner was Chay Murphy. Chay began his run of good form through the week with a net 65. Phil Jepson and Craig Batty both scored net 67's for second and third place in Division 1, Phil taking second on countback. The leaders in Division 2 were Eddie Smith and Richard Grimmer, both with net 65s, Eddie tak-

ing second place on countback. Jonathan Bradley and Phil Smith scored net 66s, Jonathan taking third place on countback.

leg victory earlier in the summer the Stocksbridge Dragons won the overall match by 521-480 points.

The Ladies 9-hole Stableford on 4 August was won by Bev Sykes with 16 points. Hilja O'Sullivan was second with 14 points and Susan Clegg third with 7 points.

The Dragons competed a day later for their August Medal. The Division 1 winner was Les Wright with a net 63. In second place was Noel Weaver with a net 64 and Sandy Murphy was third with a net 67. Division 2 was won by Doug Needham with a net 66. Stuart Roebuck and Charlie Dale both scored net 70s, but Stuart took second place on countback.

On Sunday 7 August the Ladies competed for the Olivia Rose Bowl. The Moffett family enjoyed a successful competition with Terri winning by a clear margin with 40 points. Helen was second with 35 points. Hilja O'Sullivan was third with 35 points as well but lost out to Helen on countback. The Dragons section had a busy week of competitive golf, starting with a match against the Grange Golf Club on 2 August. The Dragons won the fixture comfortably with 4 wins, one half and one loss in the 6 legs. The overall score for the match was 241-213 points. Combined with the away

Lastly, the Stocksbridge Bandits held their monthly competition, this time a Scramble. The winning team with a net score of 54.2 was E Steele, R Marshall, P Mannion and S Marsh. In second place with a score of 55.2 was R Sheppard, N Elliott, A Cowling and K Howson. In third place with a net 55.8 was E Wilkinson, B Dobb, W Hirst and A Mosley.
