Local bus operator, Stagecoach has announced it is to make changes to a new bus service that has been in operation for only 2 weeks.

The Stocksbridge ‘Flyer’ has re ceived much scrutiny and criti cism from local residents after the Supertram Link bus was scrapped earlier in the month and replaced by the new service.

Local MP Miriam Cates last week, met with the operator.

Miriam Cates posted

“This afternoon, Councillor Lew is Chinchen and I met with Stage coach to discuss concerns about the new 57/57a bus service be tween Stocksbridge and Sheffield.

We shared detailed feedback from passengers about buses that have been late, driven past without stopping or not turned up at all.

We also made clear the impact that this lack of reliability is having on people in the Upper Don Val ley trying to get to work, school, and hospital appointments.

Stagecoach accepts that the first two weeks of the new service have not been good enough and they are disappointed in the poor per formance of the service.

However, they have been working to understand the reasons behind the issues and will be revising the timetable from 30th October to improve reliability, especially at peak times.

There will also be additional re sources committed to the route from 30th November to help with the problems caused by traffic congestion at peak times.”

A regular user of the bus service told Look Local

“Yesterday, the 12.51pm 57 sched uled and on the ‘tracker’ from

Unsliven Bridge fell off the ‘track er’ and did not run, and when the next bus came there was a crowd waiting for it in the centre of Stocksbridge, several of whom said they’d been waiting for over an hour for any bus. All were pro viding horror stories about Stage coach, including that it is now im possible to get on a Stocksbridge bus at Hillsborough during rush hour times, as they are all full.”

Stagecoach is also currently up dating the data for their mobile phone app bus tracker, again to improve reliability.

Stagecoach managers are keen to hear directly of incidences where buses with empty seats have failed to stop for waiting passengers. If this happens to you, please make a note of the time and the direc tion of travel, and call Stagecoach on 0345 2418000.

Hillsborough Councillor meets new Bus Chief to challenge recent changes

On Tuesday 11th November Coun

First will meet with local council lors and members of the public much more frequently to under stand local concerns.

Cllr George Lindars-Hammond:

“I am immensely disappointed that First have not changed their deci sion, and have no current plans to bring back the 52a to it’s previous

“Government have a lot to answer for here – they have slashed fund ing for public transport, making whole bus routes less financially

“The whole bus system needs radi cal overhaul. It is a broken system which allows private transport pro viders to reap only the benefits –picking just the profitable routes.”

“This is why for many years La bour councillors have called for bus franchising, so there is much greater local control – to determine which routes need to be served. This would have prevented the wholesale reduction in services we have seen throughout the city.

“The new Mayor, Oliver Coppard, is undertaking franchising, but it

could take a couple of years till this is up and running. Government needs to speed-up the process, but we also need urgent short-term so lutions.

“It is simply outrageous that Hills borough – and in particular resi dents in Wisewood and Loxley –have been let down by buses.

“As a council we’re working hard to implement important sustainabil ity schemes such as Active Travel and the Clean Air Zone, but cuts to buses massively undermine our intentions and the wider environ mental and connectivity plans we’re striving towards.

“I will continue to speak up for res idents and fight for proper public transport. I am planning a public meeting for the residents of Wise wood on bus services and want to hear from as many residents as possible”.

A petition has also been launched calling on government to think again about their cuts and to invest in the city’s buses. You can sign the petition here – www.stoptorybus cuts.com

TWO ARRESTED AT SUSPECTED £300,000 ILLEGAL ‘DRUGS FACTORY’ IN EMPTY SHOP

ANGER AS PARk REvAMP COULD OUST CYCLING GROUP AND FORCE PEOPLE TO PAY FOR A kICkAbOUT

A Sheffield park users’ group is wor ried that council plans for a ‘pay to play’ multi-games area will mean fewer people can use a popular spot, writes Julia Arm strong Local Democracy Reporter for Yorkshire Live.

The Friends of Hillsborough Park say that the area earmarked for a Multi-User Games Area (MUGA) with a cafe and toi lets is already a popular space for visitors to play casual games such as basketball on the hardstanding surface and have football kickabouts.

It is also the base for weekly riding sessions run by Sheffield Cycling 4 All for people with disabilities.

Four floodlit tennis courts would also be moved to make room for the MUGA and the plan is to replace only three.

He said: “It’s about getting active! You can walk from there.”

Andy said: “We’ve been in discussions with the council planners for some time about what it might look like. We’ve got some very specific concerns about it.

“It’s now quite a big free-to-use area. All of the plans we’ve seen for it are making a large part of it into a pay-to-use area.

“The Friends of Hillsborough Park are ba sically a group of volunteers that come to gether largely to work in the walled garden. We believe parks should be public green spaces.

“At the moment some things that are being proposed, partly because the council are struggling for funding, are against the idea of open green space.”

Two people have been arrested after Shef field police raided a suspected £300,000 il legal drugs factory in a former shop.

A warrant issued at a property on Middle wood revealed extensive and sophisticated cannabis growing set-up.

SHEFFIELD NORTH WEST NPT posted

“ Part of what we do is develop intelligence and the culmination was a strike team that deployed to a property on Middlewood Road right outside the shops.

A very dynamic and highly visible forced en try took 32 seconds! Once inside, we found a very extensive and professional cannabis grow, utilising all the floor space of this de serted former shop. The wiring was very dangerous and the electricity was bypassed. Tradecraft was evident as we found false walls, heat insulation and false window light

Two men were arrested from the property. We also seized several ounces of bagged can nabis ready for the streets and mature can nabis plants with a street value of over £300k recovered.”

The council says it wants to improve the area. Current plans include the three tennis courts, indoor Padel tennis – a simplified form of the game – a games area for basket ball, netball and five-a-side football, a mini golf course and an “informal access space”.

The council says that the idea has come about because of consultations last year with local people and park users. It is one of several MUGA plans proposed citywide.

Andy Chaplin, treasurer of the Friends group, says he is puzzled by the inclusion of a cafe and toilets as there are both only yards away at the restored old coach house in the park.

Tom Collister, one of the project coordina tors at Sheffield Cycling 4 All who use the area for riding sessions, said: “We have been here for 14 years. This is a perfect spot for cycling – away from cars but close enough to the car park for people to get to.

“It is close to our containers (where they store bikes) so it is easy to set up. It’s a big space for our people to fill and not get in each other’s way. It’s a stepping stone to go on the paths around the park so it is perfect for us.”

Tom added: “We’ve been consulted a bit about what our options might be. Obvi ously we’d rather be here.”

Fundraising Fire Walk

At the end of this month the team at Fox Valley Shopping Centre will be holding a Halloween themed fundraising fire walk in aid of Sheffield Hospitals Charity.

Pollution

Dear look local

Has anyone else noticed that there seems to be more days each year with smokey air in Stocksbridge (spilling into the rest of Sheffield) because of burning heather ?

If landowners want to get away with outdated and on balance harmful management (which by the way leads to the persecution and death of a long list of wild birds and animals) so obviously damaging the air quality of tens of thousands of people is a not a good idea.

There is an online city council air pollution complaints site which readers with more tech skills than me might like to visit on the next lovely autumn day marred by large scale heather burning.

Dear editor

Your Letters

Families will struggle

Many families in Penistone and Stocksbridge are asking just what this Conservative government has got against them?

The recent polling of our area by Survation shows that many local people are really worried about what the future for them and their families. We know food bills will rise, we know fuel is going to cost more, and those with a mortgage are seeing their payments rocket.

The Tory government’s mini-budget played fast and loose with the economy and their gambling has made it tank, leaving local people in dire straits.

Unfunded tax cuts for the wealthy left mortgages jumping and pension funds reeling. Even the screeching U-turn on scrapping the 45p tax band is too little and too late. Her Chancellor might have been replaced but the lasting damage is done.

Liz Truss says the last thing we need now is a General Election. Her apology isn’t going to pay people’s mortgages. The sooner we have an election the better. Labour is ready for government. We will be on the side of people in Penistone and Stocksbridge.

High Green Art Group Exhibition

On the weekend of 15th/16th October High Green Art group held their Annual exhibition in St.Mary’s Church Hall High Green.

My husband and I spent an enjoyable two hours viewing the display of work by a talented group of people. This was a free event, just raffle tickets, tea and cakes from the mouth watering display to purchase if desired.

Do consider visiting the exhibition next year to enjoy some of our local talent.

Ovarian Cancer

Women are still being overlooked as ovarian cancer continues to devastate and claim lives.

Progress is not being made quick enough, and as one of those diagnosed with the deadliest gynaecological cancer, I know we deserve more.

I’d been suffering with a bloated tummy, feeling full quickly, and misdiagnosed water infections for over a year. I visited my GP, but my symptoms were confused as other things, so I kept putting up with it.

In the meantime, my husband was diagnosed with bowel cancer. This was a shock to us both, but it made me consider my own health, and after doing some research I realised I had the classic symptoms of ovarian cancer. Persistent bloating, feeling full quickly, tummy pain, and needing to wee more often. I went back to the GP but thought “no, we can’t be that unlucky”.

Young Lives vs Cancer

Dear Look Local Readers,

I hope you are keeping well.

At Young Lives vs Cancer, we help children and young people (0-25) and their families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. We provide specialist support at a click of a button to young people facing cancer and their loved ones.

We are looking for volunteers to be our Assistant Navigator who will help to make sure that personalised and specialist support is just one click away for the children, young people and families we are here to support.

What will you be doing?

But I was diagnosed with stage I ovarian cancer, another shock in our life. I went from caring for someone with cancer, to being someone with cancer.

This service is often the front line of our service pathway. We want to grow our team of Operators and we’ve developed a new vital role for volunteers within the team. You’ll be on the front line responding to incoming messages from service users, their friends and their family via our Live Chat app.

Please imagine it’s your first day at college, but you can’t afford deodorant, or attending a job interview not being able to afford toothpaste. These are situations that a growing number of people are facing, especially during these challenging times.

We can help those in crisis around us by donating hygiene items as well as food to local food banks.

BanktheFood is a free charity app that connects you with your local food bank, shows a list of their most urgently needed items, and tells you where to find local donation points. It makes donating the things people need incredibly easy.

Please give what you can to help people in crisis in your local community.

Formal complaint

STILL NON- AND LATE-RUNNING 57s & 57As TO STOCKSBRIDGE/DEEPCAR

Dear David Rich (Commercial Director Stagecoach Yorkshire) [cc Nathan Broadhead, SYPTE, Miriam Cates MP, Editor & staff LookLocal]

Have the wheels actually been put on the Stagecoach yet? Three, nay, even two wheels on their wagon would be a big improvement. On returning from four days down London today, I went to Flat Street for a bus back to Deepcar. The 18.23pm 57A hadn’t as yet come, and wasn’t on the ‘tracker’ (which still doesn’t recognise ‘57A’) and a group of people there said the prior 57 hadn’t either.

Well, 15 to 20 minutes late, the 57A actually did arrive, which meant some had waited the best part of an hour and a half. But anyway they may as well have waited longer, for the 18.52pm 57, as the two ‘services’ were now set to get into Deepcar at about the same time …. which is just what we saw with the buses in the other direction. The 57 and 57A slid TOGETHER down Carr Road. Perhaps this is to make a wagon train big enough to circle and kept at bay the angry natives?

I got off the bus at the bottom of Hillcrest Road, as did a woman commuter who lives here, who told me that last week only six of the twelve buses she went for ever came. So she put in for a full refund of her weekly ticket. Good on her. Now that’s how all local bus passengers can get the message to hit home.

Since my diagnosis I’ve realised so much more needs to be done to save lives. If diagnosed at the earliest stages 9 in 10 women will survive1. But two thirds of women are diagnosed late, when the cancer is harder to treat2.

To get faster diagnoses, we need widespread awareness and more support for GPs and healthcare professionals. Right now, over a quarter of women make three or more visits to their GP before being referred for tests and nearly a third wait over three months from first visiting their GP for the correct diagnosis. No GP wants to miss a diagnosis of ovarian cancer.

Together with Target Ovarian Cancer, we’re calling for a combination of national symptoms awareness campaigns, more training and support for GPs and urgent investment in the Clinical Nurse Specialist workforce. This will lead to earlier diagnosis of ovarian cancer, access for all to treatment, and widespread improvements in support, notably mental health support.

Editor, we’re calling on you and your readers to help us. Email your MP telling them that urgent action is needed to raise the profile of ovarian cancer and the devastating impact it’s having on people’s lives. Please do this today.

Find out more by visiting www.targetovariancancer. org.uk.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter.

With best wishes,

Dear look local

We need every single campaigner in the struggle to get a bus service back for our area Miriam Cates and Lewis Chinchen included.

The best way they could support our Public Transport is by backing moves to restore it to the Public. They also need to oppose their party’s destructive hostile policies on Europe and immigration that are leading to chronic shortages of key workers including bus drivers.

I would like to direct them and other readers to stoptorybuscuts.com

We positively welcome your application irrespective of your background. We are on a journey, and if you join us, you will be part of a community that is committed make a difference to the lives of children and young people with cancer.

Golf Auction Raises £5000

Stocksbridge Golf Club held its annual Captains Charity Auction on 14 October. Both the Gents and Ladies Cap tains, John Moss and Heath er Evans, have been working hard through the year to raise money for prostate cancer services and research.

The Charity Auction evening was a key event where they were hoping to raise a signifi cant amount of money for a very worthy cause. Prostate cancer will affect 1 in 8 men and if you are over 50, have a family history and are black then the risks are even higher. On the night over £5000 was raised by auctioning a whole range of items for as little as £15, right up to £3000

To help the auction go well, local sculptor, Paul Wid dows of Blacksmith Sculp tures, donated an impressive statue of a horse's head and front legs, made to a life-size scale. The sculpture is made of 3mm plate steel and took Paul 6-7 weeks to complete.

The sculpture was subject to some fierce bidding and in the end, Deepcar resident Trevor Fletcher, lasted the course with a winning bid

of £1850. But that wasn't the end of it, because Paul had a friend who guaranteed ad ditional money to ensure the item raised a stagger ing £3000 on its own. Paul also generously donated two other sculptures that raised a further £1000. There was a range of smaller value items that then took the total over the magical £5000.

Paul and Trevor are pictured on either side of the horse sculpture, along with Heather Evans and John Moss (Lady and Gents Captain) and John Yeates (Club President).

After the auction, John Moss told Look Local " I’m de lighted that the money raised for sculptures from Paul Widdows was amazing. We have raised well over £5000 throughout the year so far and the additional £5000 do nated tonight was a massive surprise. Raising money for prostate cancer care and re search is very important to both Heather and myself. We are so pleased with the gen erosity of the Club members and the local community."

Barton had made a great start to their season, with a particularly well organised defence. They were third at the beginning of the match.

However, their recent league form had been wavering with an away win, a home draw followed by an away defeat.

Church had only failed to score once so far this season, so were sure to give Barton a thorough testing.

The game was marred when Church striker Kieran Ryan (pictured) who suffered a

painful back injury. An offduty medic called Sue, who happened to be at the game, assisted Church physio Ruth Tomlinson in treating Ki eran they were in turn were helped by Church support ers and officials.

It was found that an ambu lance would take eight (8) hours to arrive so local man Lee Stearman kindly volun teered to take Kieran to hos pital in his campervan

It was found Kieran has got severe bruising and inflam mation around the sciatic

nerve, thankfully no broken bones or any dislocation. An even match, where Church played the better football, turned on a couple of moments. Harry Am bler in the Church goal was judged to have prevented a goal scoring opportunity with his heavy challenge. Bar ton exploited the extra space created. Church continued to make it hard for Barton, but could only breakdown their well organised defence once. A disputed first pen alty saw 10 man Church go 2 nil down.

Chapeltown RBL made it 6 wins from 6 games this season, coming from 2 down to beat Red Lion.

After an even start Red Lion took the lead af ter the ball pin balled in the area before the Lion striker finished off the post.

Their lead was doubled from a corner when a good cross was guided in to the far corner.

The comeback began when Josh Savage took charge in midfield and his through ball found

Jay Carter who burst through the defence and lobbed the goal keeper.

The second half saw RBL click in to gear and equalise after 60 minutes when Carter crossed and a Jed Phillips effort re bounded to top scorer Mitch Savage to volley home.

Legion pressed for a winner and took the lead on 77 minutes when Phillips was clattered in the area, and Harley Wilson stepped up confi dently to despatch the penalty.

mOTORCyCLE,

Stocksbridge golfer Ben Stringer has celebrated a suc cessful few days at the Golf Club, winning three compe titions in little more than a week. As the summer season concluded, Ben won not one, but two of the Club's knock out competitions. Firstly, he won the Gents Scratch Knockout Cup, beating An drew Finney in the final. The Scratch Cup is aimed at the lower handicap golfers in the Club and players, as the name of the competition indicates, play without their stroke al lowance. Ben and Andrew fought closely and after the 18th hole was still level, so it took an extra hole before Ben triumphed. He wasn't finished there though, because he then teamed up with his uncle, Dave Stringer, to win the Club's Gents Doubles Knock out Competition. The String er pairing triumphed over

Joe Sedgwick and Danny Costello with a convincing 5 and 4 win.

Then to cap a sparkling week of success, Ben won the Pro's Prize Front 9 Stableford on 13 October. Playing off scratch Ben played some spectacular golf to score 21 points, which is equivalent to 3 under gross.

One eagle, two birdies, 5 pars and the only blemish, a bo gie 5 on the 9th, made his round-up. Ash Jowitt (4) was second with a highly credible 20 points and Trevor Mosely (4) was third with 19 points.

On 12 October, the Dragons Section competed in the pen ultimate round of their Sum mer Cup. Frank Hines (26) triumphed with 37 points. That was the same score as Frank Milnes (23), but with a better back 9 score, it was Frank Hines that took the honours. Stuart Marsh (19) was third with 36 points.

With strong winds and squally rain, the Gents Sec tion started the Winter Cup on 15 October, a leaguebased competition that will run through until the end of March next year. Richard Grimmer (16) won the open ing round of the Stableford format competition with 38 points. Steve Coutts (9) was second with 37 points and Brian Dobb (14) was third with 36 points.

Lastly, the Gents competed for a Pro's Prize Stableford on 16 October, with Ash Howe (3) winning by a clear margin with 39 points. Ash's round included an impres sive 6 birdies in the last 11 holes. Dave Buxton (8) was second with 36 points and Stuart Marsh (19), for the second time in the week, was third with 33 points.

TIGERS 'ROBBED' OF GRAND TITLE

SHEFFIELD were pipped to the Pre miership league title as they were beaten 91-89 on aggregate by rivals Belle Vue.

The Tru Plant Tigers won their home leg 50-40 in front of a jam-packed Owlerton Stadium on Thursday, but were cruelly denied a first ever topflight title.

12 points down from Monday’s first leg in Manchester, the night got off to the perfect start for Sheffield when they bagged a 5-1 in the re-run of the opener after Aces’ captain Brady Kurtz was excluded for taking the front wheel of Lewis Kerr out of bend two.

But the decisions were well and truly levelled out when Adam Ellis was controversially thrown out of Heat Three, despite being ahead of his Belle Vue opponent Tom Brennan who was already unsettled into bend two.

“It’s a real shame that this Grand Fi nal will be left with people talking about refereeing decisions.”

PREMIERSHIP GRAND FINAL, 2nd leg

SHEFFIELD 50: Tobiasz Musielak

10+1, Jack Holder 9+1, Lewis Kerr 9, Justin Sedgmen 6+1, Adam Ellis 6, Connor Mountain 5+2, Kyle How arth 5.

Matej Zagar 7+1, Brady Kurtz 5+2, Simon Lambert 2, Charles Wright R/R.

Belle Vue win 91-89 on aggregate and are crowned 2022 Premiership League Champions.

TIGeRS STeADY START IN CUP FINAL

KING'S LYNN 39 TIGERS 51

BOSS Simon Stead hailed Sheffield’s professionalism after racking up a 12point lead to take back to Owlerton in the Premiership League Cup final.

five, stamping their authority with a hat-trick of 5-1s late on in a 51-39 victory at King’s Lynn.

Tobiasz Musielak (12+1) was the top scorer but it was Lewis Kerr who made the biggest impression against his former club, dropping just one point to an opponent en route to 10+1.

It puts Simon Stead’s men well and truly in the box seat to banish the memory of missing out to Belle Vue in the Premiership Grand Final last week.

“The lads did exactly what I asked and expected of them,” said Stead.

“They did not let me down one little bit, they just showed their profes sionalism and their want to do well for this club.

“They were all disappointed with what happened on Thursday and I think we saw what that meant to them tonight, going out there, get ting straight back at it and doing a fine job.

“We know we are only at the halfway stage, we know what can happen in this sort of meeting and we have not won it, we have just made life a little bit easier for ourselves on Thursday when we will have the same commit ment

determination.”

PREMIERSHIP PAIRS UPDATE

ROUND Five of the 2022 Premier ship Pairs will now be staged at Le icester.

It was due to be hosted by Sheffield, but because of stadium unavailabil ity at Owlerton, the event will now be held at the Paul Chapman and Sons Arena on Tuesday, October 25 (7.30pm) ahead of the final round at Belle Vue on Thursday, October 27 (7.30).

Sheffield Speedway would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank the Leicester man agement, as well as fellow Premiership promoters, for their co-operation.

The Tru Plant Tigers are back at Owlerton this Thursday (October 20, 7.30) for the deciding leg of their Pre miership League Cup Final against King's Lynn before hosting Ipswich next Monday (October 24, 7.30) in their final team fixture of the year.

Aireborough

Stocksbridge

A trip to West Yorkshire to visit 3rd placed Aireborough proved a tough assignment for plucky, Globe Holidays-spon sored Stocksbridge Rugby, as they eventually went down to a 31pts to 11pts defeat at the hands of their hosts.

Travel difficulties lead to a shortened warm-up for Head Coach Andy Lawrence’s troops, & the home side took an ear ly advantage to outflank the Stocksbridge defence to register their 1st try in the corner. Expe rienced fly-half Scotty Bowskill got Stocksbridge on the score sheet with a simple penalty af ter an offside call however, the home side increased their lead with a further score, after a mid-field line break. Bowskill kept the visitors in touch with a further successful penalty kick, before burly prop Gary Woodcock was sent to the sin bin after a high tackle. Ben Ty ers playing at full-back, made some telling cover tackles as Aireborough looked to take ad vantage. However, busy centre Jack Pearson was unlucky not to score after pouncing on a clever grubber kick from Bowskill as Stocksbridge continued to play through the wider channels.

The 2nd half was a scrappy af fair with neither side gaining

any real dominance, the Official issued a Team Warning to the home side for several dangerous ‘no arms’ tackles but decided against further sanctions when the infringements continued The powerful back line was full of running with O’Leary, Pear son & Tyers carrying well on the back of solid forward pos session. The Stocksbridge de fence was called into action & young flier Logan Hanna was on hand to usher his oppos ing winger into touch when it seemed Aireborough were about to score. The home team increased their lead with a wellworked score to the side of the posts, before Jonathon Gill, sponsored by R-Autos Salvage, finished off a fine Stocksbridge attack scoring out wide after further strong forward play. Aireborough responded with a couple of late tries despite some heroic last-ditch defence by Ty ers to make the final score: Aire borough 31pts – Stocksbridge Rugby 11pts.

The Man of the Match award sponsored by Goodlad Con tracting went to veteran outside half Scotty Bowskill for a skilful all-round performance, with Tyers, that man Frith & O’Leary all pushing their own cases with some fine individual displays.

Stocksbridge Rugby maintain 8th place in the Yorkshire Coun ties 4 league ladder despite this setback, & will be looking to bounce back next week when York-based, Nestle Rowntree are the visitors to Coal Pit Lane, kick-off on 22nd Oct is 3pm.

Club Captain Adam Frith praised the efforts of his team afterwards saying, ‘this is always a difficult place to come & win’, adding ‘we stuck together when it got tough & competed for all the way throughout the game. On another day, we could easily have taken the point here. We will be ready, & go again next week’.

Junior Chair Chris Ibbotson has assembled a panel of Coaches to put youngsters though their paces, all willing to help devel op the future of the Club.

‘the majority of the current 1st XV have all come thru our Youth channels’ said Ibbotson, adding ‘these youngsters will grow to love the game & be part of the future when they’re good & ready. Kids of all ages & abilities are welcome to Coal Pit Lane every Wednesday from 5.30pm until 6.30pm, & the Club have been delighted with the attendance nearing 40 Chil dren, both boys & girls in recent weeks.
