St Luke’s Festival of Light makes a sparkling return for 2022 - page 6
Inspirational schoolboy Tobias Weller was surprised by his favourite author David Walliams just before winning a top award for his selfless charity work, writes Mwonde Mwutima for Yorkshire Live. The 11-year-old from Sheffield, was named GMB Young Fundraiser of the Year in the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards. The youngster did challenges with his walking frame to raise money and awareness of what life is like for people with disabilities.
to help others by taking on a series of gruelling physical challenges. So far, Tobias has completed two marathons, an Iron Man and a sponsored walk to raise more than £158,000 for a range of good causes, including his school and Sheffield Children’s Hospital. He was nicknamed 'Captain' after he was inspired by his hero Captain Sir Tom Moore to start raising money during the pandemic lockdowns.

New £560,000 DONCASTER Chapeltown Academy SHEFFIELD AIRPORT extension opens TO FULLY CLOSE DOWN Construction of the new suite, which includes a stateof-the-art engineering suite, classroom, computer room, and conference room started in May and it was opened to students in September 2022. Speaking at the official opening ceremony, Headteacher Dayle Coe said: "The decision to extend into engineering is in direct response to local and national needs, it is believed that the UK needs around 37,000-59,000 skilled engineers for planned projects. This initiative is helping to provide sustainable jobs.”
A North Sheffield Post-16 Education Provider has officially opened its engineering suite, following a substantial investment. The current cohort of Engineering students joined guests on Tuesday afternoon to officially open the new suite at Chapeltown Academy.

“Today is a very special day for us and the young people of North Sheffield” “The investment has created a fantastic new engineering suite equipped with modern and high-quality machinery which will go far in training our future skilled engineers. It has also created a suite of new classrooms, conference facilities, and an ICT suite which will enhance the already high-quality education on offer at Chapeltown Academy. This investment will ensure young people in the North of the City have access to high-quality Post-16 provision which is right on their doorstep.” “Thank you to everyone who has spent their time to help make this project a reality.” Chapeltown Academy is a member of Minerva Learning Trust, a family of Sheffield schools that are working together and learning together to be outstanding together.
When the final flight leaves on Bonfire Night, hundreds if not thousands of people will see their future go up in smoke, says GMB Union. The final flight from Doncaster Sheffield Airport will be Saturday [5 November 2022] leaving GMB members 'furious'. Doncaster Sheffield's terminal and associated infrastructure will remain available for passenger services until 7am that day, after which no further passenger activities will take place, the owners have said. The final TUI inbound flight will take place on 4 November a 9.15pm, with the final commercial flight leaving for Manchester at 00:015am on 5 November. [1] Despite Doncaster Sheffield topping the Which? survey of best airports four years running and the offer of
public cash to keep it open, the airport’s owners the Peel Group appears determined to close the transport hub. Doncaster Sheffield Airport workers went to Parliament to hand in a 100,000 strong petition [2] to save the site. [3] Sarah Barnes, GMB Organiser, said: “Doncaster is one of the finest airports in the country. Workers love it, passengers love it and it’s vital for the south Yorkshire economy.
“Yet despite public cash being made available to keep it open, the Peel Group seem determined to close it, knock it down for housing and make as much money as possible, with no thought for the community. “When the final flight leaves on Bonfire Night, hundreds if not thousands of people will see their future go up in smoke. “GMB members are furious, the people of South Yorkshire can’t allow it to happen.”

Nine of the twelve computers donated to us will be allocated to those families who do not currently have access to a PC at home. The remaining PCs will be used for spares resources to support students working in school. This donation really does show how businesses can make a difference in our communities.”
Twelve desktop computers were presented to Stocksbridge High School earlier this week. The donation follows the company’s transition to a more streamlined and flexible approach to working with the use of laptops. Lisa Kitchen, the company’s Learning and Development Director said: “Today’s technology is allowing our team to be flexible by choice in how we live and work and we quickly realised the need to make changes to our current ways of working, ensuring our team and clients have access to the best resources and learning experiences. “Desktop computers are fast becoming redundant in the workplace but for those
currently without access to a computer, whether this be at home or at school, this provision is huge. It was important to us that we recycled the computers and we’re delighted that they can be put to good use here in our own community. “Our company has a valued long-standing relationship with Stocksbridge High School, and we play
a significant role in the organisation of their Year 10 ‘Futures Day’ to support career choices and interview days with students.” Mrs Claire Jackson, Subject Leader for H&SC & Workrelated learning lead at Stocksbridge High School said “This technology will be a big help to our students. BP reports huge profits BP has reported a huge profit for July to September due to high oil and gas prices, writes the BBC. The oil giant made $8.2bn (£7.1bn) for the period, more than double the profit over the same three months last year. BP said it expected to pay $800m in UK windfall tax this year, a levy introduced by the government in May. The windfall tax - introduced by Rishi Sunak - applies to profits made from extracting UK oil and gas. At the time Mr Sunak said the levy - which they have called an Energy Profits Levy - would raise £5bn in its first year. BP's sharp rise in profit is likely to lead to renewed calls for the UK government to increase the windfall tax on energy firms. Last week, BP's rival Shell revealed that it had paid no windfall tax in the UK because it had invested millions of pounds. But it said it expected to start paying the levy next year. While BP is set to pay some windfall tax, it will also give its share-
holders a boost by increasing its dividend payment by 10%, and will also spend $2.5bn buying back shares. BP's profit for the quarter was much higher than analysts had expected but dipped from the previous three months due to a fall in the wholesale price of oil. Higher energy prices have also fuelled the rise in gas and electricity bills for both households and businesses. The government is limiting the impact through the Energy Price Guarantee scheme but instead of lasting for two years as originally planned, it will now end in April. There have been warnings that typical household gas and electric costs could reach more than £4,300 when support is scaled back. The price of energy has also been a major driver of inflation - the rate at which prices rise - which is currently 10.1%. For the year so far, BP's global profits jumped to $22.8bn compared to $8.7bn for the first nine months of 2022.

College Joinery team creates bespoke frames for precious Barnsley WW1 relics year working on the frames and said: “We were honoured to assist in manufacturing the display frames for the Barnsley Pals regimental colours.
Barnsley College Joinery Lecturers have unveiled frames made with the help of students to house two recently restored Barnsley Pals flags. The flags are believed to have been stored in St Mary’s Church on Church Street in the town centre for more than 100 years and had deteriorated to the point of falling to pieces. The restoration project was funded overall by a grant from South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation (SYCF), who advised Father Stephen Race at St Mary’s to get College involved by creating the stands. Joinery Lecturers Stephen Seymour and Dom Horn, along with Rick Wills, Joinery Tech-
nician, Robert Moorhouse, a Level 3 Diploma student and Charlie Anson, a Level 2 Diploma student, worked together to create the stands. The stands, which the College team fabricated out of Ash wood, have been introduced in a special year for the Church as it celebrates the bicentenary of its rebuild in 1822. Textile conservators from the People’s History Museum in Manchester spent a week carefully laying out the remaining fragments of each colour to be placed in the bespoke frames, and the fragments are still visible in the displays. Lecturer Stephen estimated that around two to three weeks in total were spent across the latter half of the last academic
“It was an opportunity for the staff and students to showcase a range of traditional skillsets, while giving something back to the local community. Especially when we consider that some of our students’ forefathers will have sacrificed so much for King and country.
The competition is open to people who were born, lived or studied in Sheffield and is organised by Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus as part of the Classical Sheffield Weekend Festival 2023.
The text has been commissioned from award-winning poet Katharine Towers, who sings in the alto section of Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus. Kathy won the Seamus Heaney Centre Prize for The Floating Man and was shortlisted for the TS Eliot Prize for The Remedies. ‘I’m utterly thrilled to have been given this opportunity’ she said. ‘I’ve greatly enjoyed the challenge, and it’s been such an interesting experience to write something in the knowledge that music would be coming its way.’ The winning composer will receive £1,500 and their work will be premiered at the Classical Sheffield Weekend Festival finale on Sunday

‘Stella Jockel was a Sheffield teacher and vicar’s wife who sang alto with the Chorus for many years.’ explained Chorus Chair Paul Henstridge. ‘She bequeathed a generous legacy to the Chorus following her death in 2020, and we are delighted to be using part of it to fund this new competition. Good ratings for two primary schools Two local Sheffield schools are celebrating their Good Ofsted reports following visits to Windmill Hill Primary in June and Lound Junior the first week in September. Windmill Hill schools joined Steel City Schools Partnership in February 2018 with Lound Junior joining in September 2021. These were the first routine inspections since converting to become academies with SCSP. The reports found that Windmill Hill Primary, based in Chapeltown, remains a Good school. Ofsted said it is a welcoming and inclusive school. They said that pupils are happy and feel safe, which means they can focus on their learning. Inspectors identified that leaders inspire staff who work together to ensure that all pupils achieve their full potential. Staff are passionate and enthusiastic and pupils achieve well across the curriculum. Simon Plant, Headteacher said ’We are obviously very pleased with the report as it recognises the
hard work and dedication to teaching and learning that is undertaken by staff and pupils each and every day. We reflect on our practise and are delighted that what we do is having a positive impact on children’s education, wellbeing and future.’ Lound Junior, the first school in Sheffield to be inspected this academic year, also maintained their Good judgement, building on the successes of the past year as part of SCSP. Ofsted found that leaders, including governors, manage the school well and that Steel City Schools Partnership Trust has provided strong support. They recognised the strong culture of reading, the support for pupils with SEND and for the positive mental health of pupils as well as the strong partnership that exists between the school and its community. Emma Bellamy, headteacher said, “It is pleasing that Ofsted recognised the strong relationships between school and parents and I appreciate the support
Nicola Shipman, CEO of Steel City Schools Partnership said ‘We are absolutely delighted that Ofsted has recognised the hard work and determination of all our staff, pupils, Governors and the Trust in these three reports. The last few years have been challenging for us all, yet during that time not only have the schools survived they have thrived. We have all pulled together to ensure that our priority has been and will continue to be providing the best quality of education possible to the pupils we serve. Both reports provide a firm basis for continued school improvement on the three school’s journeys to outstanding."
ONE of Sheffield’s best loved Festive traditions will be making a sparkling return this December. The St Luke’ Hospice Festival of Light is the annual celebration that sees thousands of lights illuminate the charity’s Little Common Lane garden, all dedicated in memory of loved ones. This year’s event will be held on Sunday, December 4, hosted by BBC Radio Sheffield presenter and keen St Luke’s supporter Paulette Edwards. “Festival of Light is loved by St Luke’s supporters and for many it is the start of the Festive season,” said St
Luke’s Head of Fundraising Joasia Lesniak. “It’s a time for us all to come together to remember and celebrate the lives of our loved ones in a very special way.” For the first time in 2022 visitors will be able to enjoy food provided by local street vendors - with both vegetarian and vegan options available - along with hot drinks and other refreshments. There will also be mulled wine and other seasonal drinks, with live music from Oughtibridge Brass Band and the Sheffield Hallmark of Harmony Choir.
The Little Common Lane gardens officially open at 5pm, with the ceremony scheduled to begin at 6pm. “We are delighted to invite you to join us in our gardens for a special evening to remember and celebrate the lives of the ones you loved,” said Joasia. “It’s a lovely time to come together and every penny raised helps us to provide vital care and support to our patient.” To find out more about the 2022 Festival of Light and how to support the event and make a donation simply visit www.stlukeshospice.org.uk/light

Artwork celebrates flour production
New artwork at Worsbrough Mill celebrates almost 400 years of flour production 31 October 2022 A stunning new artwork installed in Worsbrough Mill Country Park, celebrates the well-loved visitor attractions’ long history of flour production and links to the growth of wheat and grain. ‘Colour Crops’ has been created by local artists Lenny and Whale who worked with children from Worsbrough Common Primary School during the early develop-
ment stages of the project. The children’s drawings of wheat and their colour choices were a catalyst for the early designs and led to the final bold and dramatic piece that represents wheat and its significance to Worsbrough. The artwork includes six brightly coloured carved poles that stand two meters tall and can be seen close to the main courtyard of the Mill. Already a hit with visitors they are another successful addition to the beautiful array of public art that can now be found in the Country Park.

Beloved Son of the late Henry and Constance Goldring, Brother, Brotherin-Law, Uncle and Great Uncle. Love from Nicola, Gary, Kerrie, Jodie, Chloe, Kori and Jaxson. A limb has fallen from our family tree. I keep hearing a voice that says, “Grieve not for me”. Remember the best times, the laughter, the song. The good life I lived while I was strong. Continue my heritage, I’m counting on you. Keep smiling and surely the sun will shine through. My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest. Remembering all, how I truly was blessed. Continue traditions, no matter how small. Go on with your life, don’t worry about falls. I miss you all dearly, so keep up your chin. Until the day comes we’re together again.

Clint
Loving a Husband as special as you Has left my heart aching, It’s broken in two. No words can describe All the grief and the pain I’d give all I have Just to see you again But you are with the angels now And for now I can wait For we’ll meet again dear, besides heaven’s gate. From your loving Wife Michelle and Step Son Chris xxx
In loving memory of
‘Our Clint’ Gods garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best. He knew you were suffering, he knew you were in pain. He knew that you would never get well on Earth again. He saw the world was getting rough And the hills too hard to climb He closed your weary eyelids And whispered “Peace be Thine”. It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone For part of us went with you the day God called you home. All our love Tracey, Nas, Jay-Lee, Maryna and Milana xxx

Thus not only exacerbating the critical and situation in those countries but breaking the law and the code here. And costing the country more and more. Does this sound familiar? Ideology gone mad! There are a number of initiatives across the city and locally that can provide help and support. The below link to the Sheffield City Council website provides a great deal of information about what is available. https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/sites/default/ files/2022-09/cost-of-living-crisis.pdf
It is good to know that here is Stocksbridge we have a locally run Food Bank in the Ikon Campus on Manchester Road across from the Stocksbridge Library. It is open between 10-12 Tuesdays and 101pm on Thursdays. It is staffed by a number of local volunteers who do a tremendous job of looking after anyone who calls in for assistance. The volunteers kept the Food Bank running throughout the Covid pandemic, & they continue to work hard to support our community. This is an important local service for many families.

Local roofing and building specialist Craig, a local roofing contractor who advertises in Look Local, repaired my roof in February of this year. Unfortunately, due to the recent torrential rain, a small section of the repair was breached. Craig and his team came out within a day of contacting him and he carried out remedial works at his own cost. I can’t thank him and his team enough for responding so quickly and for making my house watertight again. I would highly recommend his services for anyone who wants an honest and honourable company to carry out work for them
Defibrillator funding Dear Readers
It is almost 3 years since our last event, pre-Covid, so Bolsterstone Community Group is pleased to announce that their popular Wreath Making Evening will be back once again this year. This event will help us to refurbish the important village defibrillator, which unfortunately has been out of action for some time. For further details, please see If you dare, reply to this letter with a defence? Of course it would not be able to operate if it were our listing in the What’s On. I don't really expect one because the reality is far not for the donations made by local businesses, and Bolsterstone Community Group far worse than I have said. And please don't reply residents who donate food when out in local shops and supermarkets who collect for the Food Bank. with any standard platitudes. Yours What a despicable administration, causing the unnecessary deaths of thousands of poor and sick members of our society. The hypocrisy and immorality in this right wing tory government beggars belief.

Mayoral Combined Authority will introduce a fare cap from 1st November of £2 before the national Florence M cap kicks in on 1st January was met with dismay by many residents of North Sheffield. To add insult to injury it states that “the move follows a £12.3M rescue package from South Yorkshire MCA to protect bus routes and school services from cuts by operators”. It should be noted that most but not all placed across the city, the school bus services have been saved.

Wood royd road meeting Would it be possible to put a small piece in the next Look Local to let local residents know, if they wish to attend, that the planning application for Wood Royd Road will go before the Planning Committee on Tuesday 8 November at 2pm at Sheffield Town Hall. This is just be for people to attend and observe the meeting rather than speak. Also please include: If you would like to attend the meeting, please report to an Attendant in the Foyer at the Town Hall where you will be directed to the meeting room. However, it would be appreciated if you could register to attend, in advance of the meeting, by emailing committee@sheffield.gov. uk, as this will assist with the management of attendance at the meeting.
It’s time the South Yorkshire MCA got its priorities right and focussed on missing routes and no shows. Beating the Government by introducing the £2 cap early only helps bus users; it does nothing for those who can’t access bus services, many of which are the poorest in our society.
Thanks,
Councillor Mike Levery Liberal Democrat Councillor for West Ecclesfield Ward

What residents are crying out for is a service that a) gets you to key destinations like Supertram and Hillsborough Centre and b) turns up when the timetable says. What is a point of having a travel pass to get you to work when your service has been cut and there’s no other alternative? What is the point of having a Travel Pass for the elderly and retired and it can’t do something as basic as take you to the shops? Residents who don’t have a car are reduced to looking for lifts with neighbours or taking taxis for important appointments.

Cash boost for Sheffield tech whizz wins innovative heat pump bronze medal at Skills projects to drive cleaner Olympics in Germany heating in UK homes This funding comes alongside the government's £450m Boiler Upgrade Scheme, that provides £5,000 grants to homeowners towards the cost of a heat pump, and a zero rate of VAT for installing clean heating measures and will make it an even more affordable option for people looking to replace a gas or oil boiler in their property.
More than £15 million awarded by Government across 24 innovation projects to make low carbon heating like heat pumps cheaper and easier to install Accelerating heat pump rollout will help households move away from using costly fossil fuels and supports target of installing 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028 Funding will create more than 300 jobs and comes alongside government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme which provides grants of £5000 towards cost of installing a heat pump
Innovations to make heat pumps cheaper and easier to install have been backed by more than £15 million in government funding, helping accelerate the UK’s move away from fossil fuels. The funding is part of the government’s £60 million Heat Pump Ready programme, which is developing innovative solutions for reducing barriers to the rollout of low carbon technology in homes and businesses across the UK. A total of 24 projects in England and Scotland have won funding in the second round of the Heat Pump Ready programme.
Heat pumps are already a proven technology that is much more efficient than traditional fossil fuel boilers and provide a reliable, low carbon heating solution for households. The key objectives of Heat Pump Ready are to reduce costs and increase the performance of domestic heat pumps, minimise disruption in homes during the process of heat pump installation and develop financial models that support an increase in heat pump deployment. Innovation support is one part of the government’s strategy to help bring lowcarbon heating technology to the mass-market and supports the target of installing 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028.
A young technician from Sheffield is on cloud nine after bagging a medal for Team UK in an international skills competition in Germany.
I’d like to thank everyone who helped along the way and WorldSkills UK for the amazing opportunity.”
24-year-old Kamil Zmich was awarded the bronze medal in the Industry 4.0 final at an award ceremony in Stuttgart on Saturday (8 October). Kamil had teamed up with Liam Whitby from Langley Mill in Derbyshire to take on the best that Austria, Germany, Hungary, India, Japan, Poland and Switzerland had to offer.
The finals usually take place one city as part of a 10-day carnival of competition. However, owing to the pandemic, this year’s event scheduled in Shanghai was cancelled. In its place are 61 finals featuring over 1,000 competitors in 15 countries throughout October and November. The Industry 4.0 final in Stuttgart was the first competition featuring Team UK members.
Kamil was already one of Team UK’s most decorated members with gold, silver and bronze medals from WorldSkills UK national finals. He now has an international medal to add to his collection. He works for Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK and studied at UTC Sheffield.
Industry 4.0 is a new competition which made its debut at the multi-country international skills competition organised by WorldSkills. It takes its name from the fourth industrial revolution covering the changes happening in technology as we seek to digitise the modern world.
Kamil Zmich said: “Winning a medal is a huge achievement and I’m over the moon that all the hard work has finally paid off. The whole experience of being involved with WorldSkills - medals aside – has been brilliant and will be a massive boost to my career.
In total, 35 members of Team UK representing all four UK nations are vying with peers from around the world to be crowned world’s best in their particular skill in October and November. The UK is looking to improve on a 12th place finish at the 2019 international
event in Kazan, Russia and climb back in to the medal table top 10. WorldSkills UK Deputy CEO Ben Blackledge said: “We are so proud of Liam and Kamil for kicking things off for Team UK with a medal in the first ever Industry 4.0 WorldSkills competition. The skills being tested here like mechanics, pneumatics and cyber technology are vital if we are to grow a high-skills highwage economy and it is just brilliant to see us leading the way like this. “As part of Team UK, Liam and Kamil are brilliant role models for other young people and their success shows how an apprenticeship or vocational training can lead to great career success. We are using the insights gained from this international event to drive up training standards across the UK so that more young people and their employers can benefit.” Kamil’s MP Louise Haigh has congratulated him on his success.
How Sheffield has transformed from Steel City to tech powerhouse By Rachel Hesno for Prolific North “Sheffield, historically, has been a city of makers. The steel industry was huge and I think there is a perception that Sheffield is industryheavy,” Dean Hughes, Investment Manager at Sheffield City Council, told Prolific North. “It used to be the case… but we've moved away from that now.” Fuelled by Northern grit to pivot from its traditional roots in steel and mining, the city now boasts a burgeoning scene of tech and digital startups, scale-ups and international businesses.
According to investment firm CBRE’s 2022 UK Tech Cities report, Sheffield has muscled its way into the top 10 now employing over 14,750 across 1,135 tech companies.
to facilities used by the likes of McLaren, Rolls-Royce and BT, which recently revealed plans for a new 67,000 sq ft flagship office to host 1,000 jobs.
It has led to Sheffield success stories including data activation platform WANDisco and telematics data management firm The Floow, which was snapped up by Israeli firm Otonomo Technologies in a deal worth around £52m earlier this year.
In homage to its manufacturing heritage, Sheffield’s tech scene has evolved and “diversified” into advanced technology which is attracting these bigger companies, explained Hughes.
The city is also home to one of the North’s few tech ‘unicorns’, a company with a valuation of over $1bn, with ITM Power paving the way forwards for green hydrogen technologies. “We want to do more to make it known that Sheffield has
changed and that we're continuing to grow in this space,” said Hughes. “It’s about changing perceptions.” Global names such as aerospace manufacturer Boeing have set up facilities in Sheffield, tapping into the rich pool of manufacturing expertise in the city.
With its £40m, 6,200 sq ft facility in Sheffield Business Park, Boeing recently became the founding member of the University of Sheffield’s new Energy Innovation Centre to develop low carbon technologies. From aircraft to car manufacturing and telecommunications, Sheffield is also home
The two universities in the city, The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, are a catalyst for innovative spin-outs - anywhere from insect-inspired AI companies like Opteran to robotics firms such as Cyberselves.
According to research by Startups Cities Index 2022, Sheffield was crowned as the top city to start a business outside of London thanks to its low cost of living, transport links, talent and business support. It’s something Marianne Hawksworth agrees with too: “What struck me moving to Sheffield was very quickly people would help you. It's the friendliest city ever.” “We want to demonstrate that we're not just for the small business, there's also scale.” Equipped with the tenacity and “Yorkshire spirit of getting things done”, it's clear Sheffield is a city to watch as a tech powerhouse as its ecosystem continues to thrive.

For the first time in their history Oughtibridge reached the 1st round proper of the Women’s FA Cup with a 7-1 romp over the Notts Trent University Students. Goals from Lucy Ridley, Chelsea Wall and Dionne Lawton built up a 3-0 lead but the students pulled one back just before the break to leave it in the balance at 3-1. But Oughtibridge pulled away in the 2nd half with a Millie Kenyon hat-trick and a further goal by Libby Hallam to round off the scoring. The result sets up a fantastic home tie against National League high flyers Nottingham Forest Ladies at the War Memorial at 1pm on Sunday 13 November.

Sheppard Wins Latest Round of Winter Cup Richard Sheppard was the third winner in this year's Winter Cup at Stocksbridge Golf Club. In wet, windy and misty conditions, Richard (13) scored a highly credible 38 points by playing very consistent, high quality golf. His round included 8 pars and only one double bogie on the tricky 7th hole. Dave Buxton (8) was second in the competition with 36 points and Andrew Taylor (16) was third with 33 points. A day later, with playing conditions much improved,
Steve Cunningham (21) won the Sunday Pro's Prize Stableford with 38 points. A birdie 2 on the 17th gave Steve the advantage over Stuart Marsh (19), who finished with the same score but lost out on countback. Dave Buxton (8) had his second top three finish of the weekend, taking third place with 35 points. Earlier in the week, the Dragons Section started its Winter Fiddle series. Mick Mosforth (26) was the overall winner with 35 points. Bob Haythorne (19) finished with the
same score, but lost out on countback. Frank Milnes (22) was third with 34 points. Finally, the Gents competed for the Pro's Prize Back 9 Stableford on 27 October. Craig Brailsford (10) won with an impressive 20 points, including a birdie 3 on the difficult 11th hole. Second place went to Mick Hulbert (7) with 18 points. Mick pipped his son Ian (7) to third place with 17 points. Chris Naylor (3) and Eddie Smith (10) also finished with 17 points, but lost out on countback.

CHURCH HUMBLED BY LEADERS Saturday 29th October 2022
Toolstation NCEL Premier Division North Ferriby 3-0 Penistone Church (a) A report by Martin Webb North Ferriby have made a very strong start to this season and at the start of this NCEL Premier Division match they were at the top. Church and North Ferriby shared similar form on the pitch, with tremendous attendances for both clubs. This was going to be a chance for Church to really show their footballing credentials on a beautiful pitch and near perfect conditions. Ferriby kicked off and immediately gave away the ball. Church looked capable of opening up the Ferriby defence, but early exchanges were fairly even. Goal 9 minutes. An innocent looking quick throw in on the right caught the Church defence out of position. A drive into the box by Danni Earl to the near
post saw the ball rebound off Tom Corner and into the bottom right of the net. North Ferriby 1-0 PCFC
Church rallied and started to make good decisions that forced Ferriby to play across the back. However, Ferriby showed why they were top, producing some quick passing play that opened up the Church defence on a few occasions. Church after 40 minutes were defending and at point blank range an attempted shot hit a raised hand on the D of the box. Goal 40 minutes. The resulting free kick was curled into the left side of the goal by Jamie Forrester. North Ferriby 2-0 PCFC Goal 50 minutes. Church failed to clear on the left and Ferriby took the ball back. They found Joshua Whiteley free on the edge of the box. He moved into a good shooting position and his low
drive across the goal found the bottom right of the net. Full Time North Ferriby 3-0 PCFC
North Ferriby were slightly the better team, but Church should take comfort from their team spirit and 'never-say-die' attitude. A 3-0 final score flattered North Ferriby but they were deserved winners. Manager Steve Lenthall We were disappointed to lose threenil away at North Ferriby. It’s not an excuse but we were low on numbers, skipper Danny Howes and Eddie Newsome are suspended and Kieran Ryan is injured. We brought Charlie Shepherd in from the reserves and he was superb I’m really proud with how we’ve played, the second half at St Helens last week wasn’t good enough, but today we put in ninety minutes of sheer hard work, they’ve really put a shift in but were not on the right end of the result.
Runners take on Canon Hall cross country Sunday saw the second fixture in the South Yorkshire Cross Country league at the picturesque Canon Hall country park near Cawthorne. Weather conditions were mixed with initial sunshine being replaced by heavy rain and the obligatory rainbow. Penistone was well represented in the junior and senior races. Pick of the juniors was Tadek Kunicki-Holda who repeated his third place he achieved in the first fixture in the boys under 15 race. In the senior ladies race Ruby Sykes repeated her fourth place from the first fixture. Kai Sunman had a strong run to finish fourth in the men’s senior race. James Mumford had an excellent run at the Worksop Half Mara-
thon where he picked up 3rd place in the men’s over40 category in 1-20-44. First lady back for Penistone was Chloe Worth in a time of 1-46-03. Others running were Gareth Irvine (1-29-57), Keith Gordon (2-0212) and Tracey Woodward (2-21-52). There was success for Penistone at the Padfield Fell race, a five mile event with 1,000 feet of climbing near Glossop. Sarah Walch was an impressive third place in the ladies race and there were age group wins for Richard Cottam (first male over40), Damien Kilpin (first male over45) and Steve Storey (first male over65). On the parkrun scene Ben Malcolm claimed second place at the Penistone parkrun and Jane Cockerton claimed her 200th parkrun whilst taking

10 man Steels take a point Grimsby Borough 1 - 1 Steels By Adam Allcroft 10-man Stocksbridge Park Steels were not able to get all three points despite their second half domination against Grimsby Borough. The Steels started off as the better side but did struggle to turn their possession into chances, especially with Luke Rawson missing due to injury. The best chance went Tomas Poole’s way as he got the beating off his man but his shot was saved by the trailing leg of Liam Higton. Grimsby Borough started to grow into the game after the first ten minutes but were also restricted from creating chances. They did try some efforts from range and it was Owen Davey’s oddly moving shot which forced Harrison Davison-Hale into an acrobatic save. Eventually though, the Borough would take the lead. The initial long throw from Caine Winfarrah was headed back to him and his curling cross evaded everyone in the box. However it would finish up in the bottom corner, giving the Lincolnshire side the lead.
It’d soon get worse for the Steels. Winfarrah was subject to a late challenge from Leigh Whelan and the free kick was given. With this being a standard 50:50 tackle, not many expected the referee to dish out the red card, which is exactly what he did, with Whelan being sent for an early shower for the challenge. Oddly, as the end of the first half and then the second half, the Steels probably played better with ten men as they fought to try and get back into the match. One great opportunity came when Ify Ofoegbu was able to out battle his defender and break through into the box but Higton was able to make the save and stop him from scoring. Things would be evened up soon though. Jaz Goundry had started giving a few fouls away on the edge of the box and would get a booking for it in the second half. Just a few minutes later, he got another for one that wasn’t too far off being a penalty, so getting his marching orders. Stocksbridge would continue to create great chances for themselves and it was their full-backs who could have got onto the score sheet. The
first chance fell to Jack Tinker whose close range hander some how went over. Then another great cross found Bailey Baker with his own close range header but it bounced wide despite it looking like it might had gone in. Eventually though, the Steels got their deserved goal. Poole put in a great ball and Charlie Oglesby, who had luck shine on him earlier in the game after only being booked for a foul that could have been deemed as last man, who got onto the end of it with a strong header which hit the back of the net. Stocksbridge tried to push forward to get the winner but Grimsby did catch them on the counter a bit and the Steels had to be wary of a Lincoln United situation happening again. While Kenan McKenzie-Grey did blare a shot over after a great run on the left wing, no one could get the winner and both teams would have to settle for a point. Next fixture: Saturday 5 Nov HOME Tadcaster Albion, 3pm KO
Stocksbridge Rugby snatch bonus point Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby made the journey to North Yorkshire to play in form Old Otliensians in the latest round of the Counties 4 Yorkshire Division, & despite a depleted travelling squad, gave a good account of themselves, gaining a try bonus point in a spirited 42pts to 22pts reversal.
Credit to the travelling Piggy’s tho’, as they refused to give in & hit back when that man Firth, sponsored by Brian & Dawn Mills, sniping from scrum half scored a fine try. This was followed by Andy Beal crashing over from close range &, with the final play of the game, a catch & drive play from a well won line out gave Gary Woodcock, sponsored by Mr John Woodcock, the opportunity to earn the weary visitors a well deserved try bonus point, with Pearson managing the conversion.
Missing several 1st choice players due to unavailability & work commitments, Head Coach Andy Lawrence switched burly prop Gary Woodcock into the 2nd row, young Jack ‘milky’ Martin was given a start in the hooking berth & ‘clock tower’ Andy Beal made the transition to No 8. There was also a welcome return to the club for mercurial fly half Paul Kelly, whilst veteran flyer Joe Jones passed a fitness test on his injured achilles to make his seasons debut on the flank. Stocksbridge started well, the forwards gained some good

momentum, leading to ‘slammin’ Sam Whitaker, sponsored by S&M Pipeworks plunging over in the corner for the opening score of the match. Despite more good work with Beal & Woodcock
leading the charges, turnover ball & some defensive errors allowed the home side with an exceptionally pacey winger to run in 3 converted tries. Half Time Otliensians 21pts – Stocksbridge Rugby 5pts.
Stocksbridge fell off the pace early in the 2nd stanza & ‘Ensians took advantage to score 3 further tries to effectively take the game away from the plucky visitors.
The point sees Stocksbridge Rugby maintain their 8th position in the Counties 4 Yorkshire League ladder, & the versatile & hard working Gary Woodcock was voted as the Funding Solutions Player of the Day in a tough day at the office for Stocksbridge. Jack Pearson, sponsored by Hamshaw Plumbing, has

won the Fox Catering Man of Steel award for October, for a string of powerful & consistent displays in the centre during the Month, Woodcock, Hartley & Martin also featured in the voting. A frustrated Stocksbridge Head Coach, Andy Lawrence said afterwards, ‘we did ok considering the squad was depleted, it would have been a different story with a full 1st team’, adding ‘we need the boys to muck in & turn up in numbers for training & for a very important fixture this week, which we can win.’ Stocksbridge host high flying table toppers Rotherham Phoenix at Coal Pit Lane this weekend, with a 2.15pm start time. All are welcome.
