Mass grave gets memorial ‘Over 1000 children, no longer lost’
A memorial to 1000 children buried in an unmarked communal grave offers "dignity and recognition", a councillor has said. Infant burials took place at Penistone-Stottercliffe cemetery in South Yorkshire for a century, only ending in the 1970s. Councillors David Greenhough and Hannah Kitching started a fundraiser back in 2021 to raise £5,000 for a permanent reminder at the site. They said many parents never knew where their child was laid to rest. Richard Galliford, 71, discovered his sister, who died in the 1940s,
was interred there only after his mother's death in 1985.
our community human history and heritage. Thank you."
"I went to the cemetery with my father. He said 'I think your sister is buried in there'. He was upset still."
Public mass graves, like the one at Penistone, are not uncommon, and according to stillbirth and neonatal death charity Sands, it was only in the mid-1980s the death of a baby at or near birth began to be recognised as a major bereavement.
Richard Galliford gave an update this week on the progress "Thanks to our community support. The children’s memorial to the 1000 and more babies and children up to 10 years of age buried here without ceremony or marker will be ready for a public unveiling at 11 am. Tuesday 15 Nov. It will be a simple but dignified event bringing justice and recognition to those laying forgotten here, but now found and becoming part of
Mr Greenhough, who set up the fundraising appeal for a memorial, said: "A lot of these parents were separated from their babies and the parents simply didn't know where the babies had ended up. "It's important to acknowledge the fact that all these babies are here, and this memorial will signify the fact that these babies do have some dignity and recognition."

Candidate hosts forum on buses with Mayor South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard joined a public meeting called by Marie Tidball, for people living in Grenoside to put communities’ voices back at the centre of plans to fix South Yorkshire’s public transport. Recent changes have seen South Yorkshire’s private bus companies threaten to withdraw a third of routes across the region. Our rural and outlying communities have already seen many services reduced or cut entirely. The meeting was an opportunity for Grenoside residents to ask questions about routes and bus provision, and discuss how to come together to hold the Government and bus companies to account to deliver an affordable, reliable and accessible service. South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard, who has recently brought together a task force of community, campaign and business representatives to hold bus companies and government to account, said:

I have available to protect our services, on behalf of our communities - but it is not enough and I find that hugely frustrating. It is clear we need a fundamental change to how the whole system works; because our buses are no longer working for South Yorkshire. Marie Tidball, the Labour Candidate for Stocksbridge and Penistone said: "Buses are for the people. They are a lifeline which connects our families and our communities. We have already seen local services slashed like our 135 service, the unreliability of the number 86 and the limited regularity of the M92 Service to Hillsborough. Public transport is essential to enabling people to get to work, to school and to socialise. As well as making our air cleaner and protecting our environment. I was grateful to hear the ways the community wants to make these changes happen in our area, and will work hard to campaign hard to achieve them."

COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS IS ON... Fox Valley
On Friday 18th November Fox Valley in Stocksbridge will start the official countdown to Christmas with the return of its popular Christmas lights switch-on event. The event, which has been paused for two years, makes its return with a bang hosting lots of festive fun for the whole family. There will be live entertainment from 4pm in the centre’s fountain area including some top local performers and one of the UK’s biggest radio stars, TV presenter and DJ, Stephanie Hirst, will be taking to the decks with a set of belters from 5:15pm.
Claire Biltcliffe, Centre Manager for Fox Valley Shopping Centre, said: “We are so excited for this year’s Christmas lights switch-on event. We’ve been eager to celebrate Christmas in style once again after a difficult period where our events have had to be cancelled or reduced. “We want to invite the community to come together and enjoy the free entertainment and festivities. “Our stores will also be open for anyone wishing to carry out some early Christmas shopping.”
Following Stephanie’s set, she will then move on to the official countdown bringing the Stocksbridge community together to join in the 6pm switching on of the stunning
Alongside the live entertainment, a festive market will be running from 2pm until 7pm with local traders selling baked goodies, sweets, handmade Christmas gifts and trinkets.
The switch-on, sponsored by the centre’s onsite Italian restaurant, Ponti’s are looking for a special person to help them switch the lights on at 6pm and are inviting people to message the Fox Valley Facebook page by Monday November 14 telling them why they deserve to switch the lights on this year.
Complementing the market, and on-site restuarants a street food area will also be running and will include several different hot food traders including woodfired pizza, crepes, snow cones, Italian street food and a BBQ unit keeping people full and warm throughout the evening.
A unique and mesmerizing street theatre show from the Spark LED Drummers will then be the grand finale closing the event. Their high-impact drumming, dynamic choreography, and beautiful lighting design will really end the event on a sparkling high.
There will also be a bar on the centre for visitors to enjoy a mulled wine with the entertainment as well as traditional fairground attractions for children to enjoy. All stores will also be opening late for the event enabling shoppers to grab their Christmas gifts early.
Sheffield
Sheffield will come together this Christmas to celebrate the festive season, with the Christmas Lights Switch On event, a Christmas Market, Santa’s Grotto, the big wheel, festive bars and more, kicking off from Friday 18 November. The Christmas Market, (pictured below) festive bars, rides and big wheel will all open on the 18 November and the big light switch on event will take place on Sunday 20th. Light Switch On – 20 November This year’s Sheffield Christmas Lights Switch On will get the festive season off with a bang as we celebrate the illuminations with fun and fireworks. Taking place across the city centre on Sunday 20 November from 2 to 6.30pm, with a dual switch on of the illuminations from Barkers Pool and Town Hall Square at 6pm. Activities include street entertainers, choirs, dance, panto and of course some special guests to switch on the lights, with a programme of music and entertainment from our Media partner Heart.

Forgemasters advances fusion energy project Sheffield Forgemasters will make a trial forging to advance the development of a pioneering green technology demonstration plant for fusion power. The critical ring component, for Canada’s General Fusion, will confirm specifications for the next phase of the programme, to create a thick-walled fusion vessel designed to withstand the extreme high-temperatures and compressive forces needed to create fusion energy. The trial ring’s specifications match the 11 rings planned for the fusion demonstration machine. It will allow the engineering team to validate the performance of the high-strength steel alloy, finalise the vessel design and confirm the manufacturing process for the fusion reactor. David Bond, Chief Executive Officer at Sheffield Forgemasters, said: “Fusion is the holy grail of green energy sources and uses the same processes which power our sun, with the potential of virtually unlimited supplies of low-carbon energy. “At Sheffield Forgemasters, we pride ourselves on our innovation and have
extensive knowledge and experience in establishing practical manufacturing solutions for disruptive technologies. We are thrilled to be a part of this project and actively working to bring fusion energy to the world.”
The fusion demonstration machine will create fusion conditions, including an internal temperature of 100 million degrees Celsius in a powerplant-relevant environment. Its results will provide the information needed to design and build a commercial pilot plant which could generate electricity at an affordable price. The vessel is designed to be modular, made up of 11 steel rings bolted together on site. In the future, this cost-effective and efficient method will enable General Fusion to deploy its commercial machines quickly, using General Fusion’s practical technology – Magnetized Targeted Fusion (MTF). Greg Twinney, Chief Executive Officer at General Fusion, said: “Sheffield Forgemasters brings to this project over 200 years of expertise creating complex steel components. Teaming up with world-leading specialists al-
lows us to focus on our commercialisation plan and stay on pace to generate zero-carbon electricity by the early 2030s.” To create the trial ring, a large steel ingot has been forged in the UK’s largest open-die press, forming the steel into a doughnut shape with a diameter of just over three metres. The ingot will subsequently be rolled and expanded into a larger, thinner ring, spanning 7.6 metres in diameter. 56 holes will be drilled into the ring. These replicate the holes that will transmit high-pressure gas from the compression drivers to a spinning interior rotor in the fusion demonstration machine. The pressure change will push smaller pistons to collapse General Fusion’s proprietary liquid metal liner around hydrogen plasma and create fusion. The final trial ring will weigh an impressive 42 metric tons. Sheffield Forgemasters’ engineering team will complete non-destructive testing on the trial ring, which can include visual, ultrasonic, dye-penetrant and magnetic particle inspection, as well as eddy-current testing

CHURCH BELLS VISIT
School looking to deepen partnership with community
The Bolsterstone Church bell ringers were invited to go and view the bells recently removed from the bell tower in St. Mary’s Church. The ringers hired a minibus to take themselves family and friends down to visit the ‘worldrenowned’ Taylor & Co. bell founders and bell hangers in Loughborough, established in 1784. Where the bells awaited repair.
Stocksbridge High School has served the local community since 1927. Many of the current students’ parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents may well have attended the school in the past.
Whilst there the ringers were given the history of the foundry and a tour around the works. Seeing the bells waiting to be worked on and hopefully fully restored and returned in time for some Christmas festivity.
With this in mind, the governors of the school are looking to strengthen the partnership with the with the local community: parents, families, businesses or anyone local with an interest in education. The project is being led by the Sarah Cavanagh and Jo Stavert Dobson who are both governors and they are also parents of students past and present of the school. Sarah and Jo have organised an initial meeting at 6.00 pm on Tuesday 22 November at the school for people interested in further developing this forum. Details of how to register interest in attending this initial meeting can be found on the school’s website under the News section. Ms Cavanagh said, “I am proud of Stocksbridge High School and have spent many years as a governor. I was, myself a pupil at the school and my children also went on to attend. I am really keen to use this opportunity to give that families and the wider community a voice in our school”

IRON AGE TALKS
Barnsley College has launched a new start-up hub in collaboration with the Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, with the aim of supporting fledgling businesses to go from the kitchen table to the boardroom. Both organisations will work together to support the businesses operating from the five incubation pods located at the college’s Business Centre. The pods will be offered free of charge alongside a raft of support, providing start-ups have the appetite to develop and grow. The small and micro businesses are invited to take advantage of the Business Centre’s meeting rooms and facilities, as well as receiving tailored support and guidance from the Chamber of Commerce. It is expected that those receiving support through this initiative will also offer work-based opportunities to current college students. A recently launched Skills for Jobs white paper highlighted the need for employers and education to work hand-in-hand, which has seen the Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce create a permanent office within the college’s Business Centre. Barnsley College and the Chamber are also part of the Local Skills Improvement Plans (LSIP) in South Yorkshire, a trailblazer programme that was launched as a result of the white paper, with the aim of identifying skills requirements in South Yorkshire and developing talent to meet these needs. Located on Falcon Street, Barnsley, the Business Centre is part of the College’s SciTech Digital Innovation hub which was opened by Rt Hon Nadhim Zahawi MP in October 2021. Toby Perkins MP opened the Barnsley College Business Centre joined other businesses and industry professionals touring the facilities and hearing from speakers including David Akeroyd, Andy Hogg, Andrew Denniff and Eloise Clarkson. Toby Perkins MP said: “I am delighted to be back at Barnsley College to hear from staff, learners and local employers. As this is Colleges Week, I’m eager to celebrate the vital role that colleges play across their community. Labour believes in a collaborative approach for the skills sector and it is great to see an example of this working well, with the launch of the Business Centre today.”
Bolsterstone Archaeology and Heritage Group held a lively event on Saturday afternoon in the Village Hall. On a grey and drizzly day, about 40 people stayed nice and warm hearing more about the Iron Age in our region and who the Celts really are. The Iron Age – when of course iron was introduced – started at different times in different parts of the world, but here in about 800BC and lasted long after the Romans arrived. We discovered in Tim Cockrell’s talk that we know quite a lot about their hill forts – we have a good example at Wincobank – and field systems, but rarely find their settlements and strangely they didn’t use pottery in this area. After tea and homemade cake, the second talk revealed a fascinating controversy. As we have
few written records from this period, we rely on Roman and later writers, but the use of the word ‘Celt’ seems to have been a recent invention to cover a wide range of languages, art and culture. Many books have been written on the subject with a wide range of opinions. Our speaker John Collis from Sheffield University outlined the characters who have been responsible for some of this confusion. The talks gave us lots to think about. If you’d like to join the Group, please contact bahgevent@axelafa.com or come along to one of our talks advertised in Look Local – we meet in Christ Church on the third Wednesday of the month – and you would be very welcome.

Capped Fares come into force Passengers in South Yorkshire can travel for less as Mayor Coppard’s £2 fare cap comes into force on buses and trams, part of bold plans to combat the cost-of-living crisis.
The price freeze brought in last week (1 November) - on any bus or tram ride anywhere in South Yorkshire - comes more than two months ahead of a planned national £2 cap on bus journeys between January and March. The £600k boost from the Mayoral Combined Authority will see passengers save up to 50% on some trips and slash the price of over 700,000 journeys that cost more than £2. It comes as the Mayor sets out ambitions to fix the regions’ broken public transport system. South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, said “As we head into winter, I know just how many people in South Yorkshire are worrying about feeding their families, heating their homes, and affording the very day to day basics as the cost of living continues to spiral.
“Because while the Government’s temporary fare cap is welcome, it doesn’t go far enough to support the thousands of people in our region who rely on our buses and tram network. Alongside the Zoom Beyond fares at just 80p for young people, we now have some of the best public transport fares in the country. “We have a broken public transport system here in South Yorkshire but bit by bit we’re making things better for the travelling public. This is just another step on that journey.” Bus and Supertram journeys which already cost under £2 will not be affected. The move follows a £12.3 million rescue package from South Yorkshire’s Mayoral Combined Authority to protect bus routes and school services from cuts by operators. For more information visit www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/farecap
“Public transport is part of the solution. That’s why we’re not just introducing the £2 fare cap early here in South Yorkshire, we’re extending it to include trams.
The original idea to commemorate a memorial to the fallen of the First World War was to build a public hall, but the idea of the Clock Tower won out at a meeting of the Stocksbridge Urban District Council on 9 July 1920. Due to the unemployment in the district at the time, the scheme was delayed until summer 1923. The architect was Mr. Wynyard Dixon and his design was publicly displayed and adopted in a public meeting. The clock was supplied by Messrs William Potts and Sons Ltd. of Leeds. There are four tuned bronze bells on which the Cambridge Quarter Chimes are struck. The hours are struck on the heaviest bell and on this bell is the quotation “At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them”. The foundation stone was laid on 14 July 1923; it was carried out by F.S. Scott-Smith Esq, general manager of Samuel Fox Co Ltd., with Joseph Sheldon, Chairman of the Council, by his side. Less than 5 months later the memorial was completed and the unveiling and dedication took place on 1 December 1923. The unveiling was carried out by R.H.R. Rimington Wilson Esq and the Lord Bishop Sheffield, who was assisted by Clergy and Ministers of the District. On the front of the tower are the plaques containing the names of 106 men and 1 woman who died in WW1, and also the names of 51 men who died in WW2. Call in at the museum, where we have many items with images of the Clock Tower on (see how many you can find around town), such as cuff-links and town guides – it has become a symbol of Stocksbridge. We also have the brochure printed for the laying of the foundation stone in 1923. The Valley Museum in Stocksbridge Town Hall on Manchester Road is usually open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 12.30 and 1 to 3.30pm. Do come in and have a look round - there are many other fascinating things on display and the volunteers from Stocksbridge and District History Society will make you welcome.
Smallest Museum is home to Tutankhamun South Yorkshire has a brand-new museum, which may well be the smallest one in the area. Small but perfectly formed, the new museum has been created inside a recently refurbished traditional red telephone box and will be the temporary resting place for a life-sized replica of the innermost coffin of Tutankhamun, sometimes referred to as ‘King Tut’. Installed as part of a stunning new Egyptian exhibition recently opened in Experience Barnsley Museum, Tut' 22: The life of Tutankhamun, explores the life of the Pharaoh King during the 14th Century BC. Curated by Barnsley-born Egyptologist Prof Joann Fletcher and over two years in the planning, it celebrates the centenary of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen in 1922. Standing six feet tall, the amazing replica is the first display for the miniature museum and has already caught the attention of passers-by. Created by artist Amanda Stoner, it is part of Barnsley Museum’s plan to showcase Culture in unexpected places. It has been unveiled just in time for the centenary of the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb on November 4 1922. Barnsley Museums adopted two unloved Listed red phone boxes in the town centre in 2021 and have trans-
formed them into works of art and museum spaces, telling stories of the town’s heritage. The project is part of the Eldon Street High Street Heritage Action Zone funded by Historic England and Barnsley Council which seeks to unlock the potential of high streets across England, fuelling economic, social and cultural recovery, encouraging people to say Hi! to the high street, and breathe new life into it for future generations. The project is part of the wider regeneration of Barnsley Town Centre. Councillor Robert Frost, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture, said: “Barnsley Museums are always thinking outside the box, and want to use every space possible to showcase our borough’s amazing history. This new museum space will be an opportunity to bring Culture to the high street, and what better way than with Tutankhamun himself! Highlighting the brilliant new exhibition in Experience Barnsley Museum, which has already attracted thousands of visitors in its first week of opening, it’s a real treat and spectacular surprise for those passing.” For more information about the exhibition visit www.experience-barnsley. com

egory and Helen repeated the feat in the ladies over35 category. Back on the fells Steve Sanders competed in the latest Peak Raid orienteering event and finished in tenth place overall and second in the men’s over50 age category.
He pipped Mick Hulbert (12), who also scored 38 points, to the victory by virtue of a better back 9. Rob Betts (10) and Neil Elliott (10) both finished with 37 points, but Rob took third place on countback.
Then on Sunday 6 November, Dave won the Pro's Prize Stableford with an even more impressive 40 points. For the second round, he kept a 6 off his card and only dropped 4 shots over the 18 holes. Mick Hulbert (12) finished second again but by a clearer margin with 36 points this time. Then, some way back, Rob Smith (7) finished with 28 points. Earlier in the week the Dragons Section competed for the second Winter Fiddle on 2 November. In windy and damp conditions Dennis Haley (16) won with 36 points. Les Wright (14) was second with 35 points
and Stuart Roebuck (22) was third with 33 points. Finally, the Mid-Week Pro's Prize 9-hole Stableford was won by Craig Brailsford (9) with an incredible 28 points. Craig finished the 9 holes one under par gross and as a result has had his handicap reduced by 2.5 shots. Jonathan Bradley (8) was a distant second, with a highly credible 19 points. John Moss (10), the Club Captain and John Wood (12), also scored 19 points but finished third and fourth respectively on countback.

Chapeltown RBL 6-0 Eckington Chapeltown Royal British legion made it 9 wins from 9 this season and progressed to the quarter finals of the league cup. After an even 30 minutes, a Connor Tonge free kick was met by the head of Dave Millen to score. Niall Smith was then hacked down in the area and Morgan Cowell stepped up to send the goalkeeper the wrong way before half time. Shortly after the break Jay Carter beat his man down the right hand side and crossed for Cowell to add his second.
Tonge set up another goal with a lovely through ball for Carter to lift over the goalkeeper for 4-0. Josh Ball found Cowell outside the box who controlled well and hit an unstoppable effort to complete an excellent hat trick.

SHEFFIELD sealed their first-ever top-flight silverware on Wednesday as they were crowned 2022 Premiership League Cup winners. The Tru Plant Tigers rounded off the season with a 5034 home win over King’s Lynn and a 101-73 aggregate triumph following a victory on the road in Norfolk last month. The start time was delayed by 50 minutes to enable extra track work to be carried out following further heavy afternoon downpours. Promising youngster Joe Martin was making his debut from the bench and became the 6th junior debutant for the 1st XV this season.
A breezy Autumnal afternoon at Coal Pit Lane, and a larger crowd than usual saw the visitors draw first blood, using the conditions wisely to maul a successful line out to open the scoring. Phoenix made the most of their weather advantage to run in 2 further tries thru their power pack, despite heroic defence from Gary Woodcock. Liam O’Leary in particular. Half Time: Stocksbridge Rugby nil pts – Rotherham Phoenix 17pts. Missing their 2nd rows, Stocksbridge understandably struggled in the line out, despite the best efforts of those on the field however the home team were rewarded when mercurial fly-half Paul Kelly, slotted a closerange penalty to get Stocksbridge on the scoreboard. Another catch and drive line out extended the visi-
tor's lead further, and finally, Phoenix moved the ball through their talented back line to outflank the covering Stocksbridge defence for another score. With time running out, Stocksbridge provided the move of the match, running the ball from their own try line, the forwards recycling possession allowing Kelly to chip over the onrushing defenders. The full-back was unable to cope with the ‘Blue wall’ and spilt the ball, allowing the returning Pat O’Leary to pounce and score under the sticks, for Kelly to convert for a final score of 10-27. The result sees Stocksbridge drop one place to 9th in the League table however, they will be hoping for a return of several 1st team squad members in preparation for a tricky but winnable home fixture against Hessle Rugby from the East Coast at the weekend, kick-off 2.15pm.
The Man of the Match award went to Liam O’Leary, available for sponsorship, playing in the back row this week, with Woodcock, Kelly and both Martin boys showing up well in an encouraging team performance. Head Coach Andy Lawrence was full of praise for his charges afterwards, “Phoenix are the best team I’ve seen in this comp and we matched them for large parts of this game, he said, adding “If we develop on our performance today, showing the same heart and determination, we could be pushing for the playoffs come the end of the regular season.” A challenge indeed for the improving Stocksbridge 1st XV.

Turner ‘prize’ goal Stocksbridge PS 1-0 Tadcaster Albion
Match report by Adam Allcroft Photo’s by Pete Revitt and Myra Little (top) Stocksbridge Park Steels beat Tadcaster Albion in a game better described as a damp squib than a firecracker. The game was as miserable as the weather and it began very scrappily. Neither team could get hold of the game very few chances were being made. But eventually, the blue touch paper was lit with a cracker of a goal. Alex O’Connor put some pressure on T’Nique Fishley and his clearance would be poor, landing at the feet of Kurtis Turner. Outside of the corner of the box, Turner went for it and curled a powerful shot into the top corner. Max Culverwell did not have a chance. Turner continued to be the best player on the pitch and he was unlucky not to get a second. After a corner, he got the ball and danced
through a couple of trailing legs before firing the shot goalwards. He smacked off the inside of the box and just unluckily for Stocksbridge, it went behind Kenan McKenzie-Grey who was looking to add the poacher’s finish.
CHURCH BEATEN AT HOME Toolstation NCEL Premier Division Penistone Church FC 0-4 Garforth Town
A report by Martin Webb The teams came into this match with contrasting form. Garforth were top of the form table with the best attack in the NCELP. They were also on a run of 10 games unbeaten, Church had lost 3 successive matches in all competitions. So, this match was a chance for Church to return to winning ways, but with several imposed changes Church had an unusual look.
In the second half, Tadcaster were much improved as they were looking to get their equaliser, or at least something that could point them to their first win of the season. Charlie Jebson-King’s dive and shot was off target while a Guilfoyle free kick was well saved by DavisonHale. However, for the most part, Stocksbridge were able to deal with what was being thrown at them.
A rather disjointed performance from Church with several players playing out of position. However, on the balance of play they did not look like they would lose by such a big margin. Garforth looked well-drilled and they played some lovely football in the build-up to their goals.
In the end, Stocksbridge were able to hold on and win a very scrappy point with the three points being more important than a clean performance on this occasion.
Manager Steve Lenthall “We were probably better than Garforth in the first half, we kept the ball pretty well, we didn’t create loads of chances but we were OK. The second half went from bad to worse, we were our own worst enemy. We allowed Garforth to dictate to us and they’ve killed us on three occasions, all were avoidable.”
Next home game: Saturday 19 November, 3pm KO, Bridlington Town.
