‘this is for patient safety’ - nurse BOBBY KNUTT

Nurses demanding 19% pay rise to go on strike Nurses in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are to strike for two days next month in what is set to be their biggest walkout in the NHS's history, writes the BBC. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) announced strikes on 15 and 20 December in its pay dispute with the government. Nurses will still provide emergency care, but routine services will be hit. The RCN said it had been given no choice after ministers would not reopen talks, but the government said the 19% pay rise demanded was unaffordable. RCN general secretary Pat Cullen said: "Ministers have chosen strike action. "Nursing staff have had enough of being taken for granted, enough of low pay and unsafe staffing levels, enough of not being able to give our patients the care they deserve."

7.9

%

Under trade union laws, the RCN has to ensure life-preserving care is provided during the strikes, which will last from 08:00 to 20:00 GMT. This is likely to mean some urgent cancer services, urgent tests and scans and ongoing care for vulnerable patients will be protected alongside A&E and intensive care - although it will be up to local health bosses and union leaders to negotiate exact staffing levels on strike days. But it seems almost certain the walkout will increase the backlog in nonurgent hospital treatment - a record seven million people are already on the waiting list in England. Louise Ansari, from the Healthwatch England patient watchdog, said she was "concerned" about the impact on this group of patients. Hospital nurse Shaun Williams only started working as a nurse a year ago. He said the thought of striking makes him sad, but he is prepared to do it.

"I am sorry we are having to do this. "But we are doing it for the right reasons, we are doing it for patient safety. "You are running on reserves most days. We do not have enough staff and because of the lack of nurses, patients are at risk. "Unless we pay nurses more we are not going to attract people or keep people." And he says unless the situation changes he may even quit nursing. GP services, however, will be unaffected as nurses working in practices were not entitled to take part in the ballot. And because a series of individual ballots were held at NHS trusts and boards rather than one national ballot, nurses at more than 40% of England's hospitals, mental health and community services are not entitled to strike because the turnout was too low in those votes.

Scouts collect over 500 food items for the Food Bank ...Continued fom front page The 3rd Stocksbridge Scout Group gave over 500 items of food to the Stocksbridge Food Bank on Monday evening this week. For a month they had been running a “Food Bank Drive” in four local Schools. The schools competed to collect the most food items with Foxhill Primary collecting the most followed by Stocksbridge Nursery Infants, Stocksbridge Juniors and Stocksbridge St Anns. The kids brought in over 500 donations! Cub Leader Jennifer Staniforth told Look Local “Without the help of the community and the schools we wouldn't have been able to be as successful as we were, a big thanks goes out to them” At the start of the “Drive”, the Food Bank volunteers had a short time one evening discussing with the young people why local people might need help with food, and what sort of food the Foodbank might need to service that need. The young people were very interested and asked some searching questions. They responded magnificently and collected a mountain of food, with the help of parents and the schools. Ian Lucraft, on behalf of the Food Bank, told Look Local “we are so grateful this collection it is for this huge amount of food.”

A57 Link Roads On, 16 November 2022, the A57 Link Roads (previously known as Trans Pennine Upgrade Programme) application has been granted development consent by the Secretary of State for Transport The A57 Link Roads project will include the creation of two new link roads: (1) Mottram Moor Link Road - a new dual carriageway from the M67 junction 4 roundabout to a new junction on the A57(T) at Mottram Moor; and (2) A57 Link Road - a new single carriageway link from the A57(T) at Mottram Moor to a new junction on the A57 in Woolley Bridge. The application was submitted to the Planning Inspectorate for consideration by National Highways on 28 June 2021 and accepted for Examination on 26 July 2021. Martin Tugwell, Chief Executive at Transport for the North responding to the announcement of the approval of the A57 Link Roads, said: “Transport for the North welcomes the Secretary of State’s support for this scheme, which will see work start on site next spring. Transport for the North has long-supported the need to better connect Manchester and Sheffield, through investment in the rail and road links between two of the North’s most important City Regions. The A57 Link Roads project will bring substantial benefits for local communities, reducing noise and levels of air pollution and creating new and improved facilities for walkers, cyclists and horse riders, and will deliver much more reliable connectivity for traffic on this busy Trans-Pennine route, bringing significant economic benefits and improving opportunities for strengthening business and trade links between Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire.”

Library reopens following refurb On Monday, 28 November, Hoyland Library reopened its doors to the public after undergoing an exciting refurbishment. Residents are welcome to see and use the new and improved spaces and facilities. Hoyland Library has been closed for the past four weeks to allow the refurbishment work to take place, during which the library has been fitted with new carpets, a new reception area, and a new dropdown space to study and work. The children’s area has seen the most significant update with a brandnew look and furnishings. Cllr Caroline Makinson, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Communities, said: “It’s very exciting to see the new and updated facilities at Hoyland Library. “We hope that residents in the area will come and see it for themselves and make use of this new space, whether that’s attending one of the activities or events or using the new drop-down space where they can work and study.” The official opening event will take place on Saturday, 3 December, with many free activities planned between 9.30am and 2pm, including the Amazelab family sessions, Christmas craft activities, a storytelling session by Susan Brownrigg and a goody bag giveaway. In addition to the improvements at Hoyland Library, Dodworth Library will be another community library undergoing a significant and exciting refurbishment in the new year. These refurbishments support our investment work in Principal Towns and Local Centres which is helping local For opening times, activities taking place, facilities and a complete list of our libraries, please visit Barnsley Libraries webpage. high streets thrive across the borough.

Plans on track to reopen ghost railways Plans to bring back lost rail services and restore closed stations in South Yorkshire are gaining momentum, as the region moves forward with bids to level up and reconnect left behind communities. Cases for funding have been put to Government to reopen the Don Valley Line, between Sheffield and Stocksbridge, and the Askern Line, between Doncaster and Knottingley, for local passenger services. If given the green light, proposals will go to the next stage of the national ‘Restoring Your Railways’ programme to provide better access to jobs, homes and education. South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, said: “There is huge support for our plans to reopen the Askern and Don Valley railway lines, because of the chance it gives us to level-up communities currently left behind because of poor public transport links. “Fixing South Yorkshire’s public transport system has to include reopening our railways and better joining up our train, tram and bus networks. Because our communities rely on these links to access the work, education and social opportunities that everyone deserves. Councillor Julie Grocutt, Co-Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Change Policy Committee, and Local Member for Stocksbridge said:

“There is no doubt that restoring passenger rail services between Stocksbridge and Sheffield on the Don Valley Line would provide significant economic and social benefits to Stocksbridge, Deepcar, Oughtibridge, Wadsley Bridge and Neepsend, as well as neighbouring communities. “Existing transport connectivity in this area is poor. Stocksbridge is less than 10 miles from Sheffield City Centre but on current bus services, journey times are taking as long as around one hour. “The key to enabling our communities to grow and prosper is to connect people to opportunities, in a sustainable and inclusive way. That can only be done with an efficient and reliable public transport system that people trust. Whilst buses are a critical part of our transport network, and we will continue to fight for better services, a rail link is essential for long-term growth that helps to meet our net zero targets.” The sponsoring MP for the Don Valley Line scheme is Miriam Cates MP.

Steel Law group raises works £2,500 at 'Sleep Out' need staff A team from Sheffield law firm PM Law Group has raised £2,500 for local homeless charity Roundabout Sheffield at their annual Sleep Out event.

The event involved sleeping overnight in the Meadowhall Shopping Centre car park, a short walk from the group's Head Office on Shepcote Lane. The Sleep Out event is held annually by the charity Roundabout Sheffield which works with over 350 homeless people every day.

Liberty Steel - which has sites in Sheffield and Rotherham - in 'immediate need' of 30 staff

The group raised £2,500 with fundraising still open for several more weeks. This is the latest in a series of events in support of Roundabout, which had already seen the group raise over £15,000 in just over a year.

A Sheffield steel company has an ‘immediate need’ for more than 30 recruits as it looks to the future after a turbulent year, writes David Walsh for The Sheffield Star.

Group Managing Director Harvey Harding commented "Roundabout is a fantastic charity and as always, we've enjoyed supporting them in this event - they help homeless people in so many ways. I've been involved in several fundraising events for them but I will always have a fondness for the Sleep Out event.

Liberty Steel needs specialist mechanical, electrical, high voltage, and process control engineers at its sites in Stocksbridge and Rotherham. The firm took on 17 apprentices recently and says it plans to hire a similar number next year.

It'll never fully replicate the challenges of being homeless, but it did give members of our team a brief insight into just how difficult life can be. As a team, we managed to get through the cold night and enjoyed each other's company and found ways to make it enjoyable. Others are not so fortunate though, so we're grateful for the opportunity to support Roundabout in the great work they do. "

The recruitment drive comes after Liberty reached an agreement with creditors on a debt restructuring deal. Earlier this year it survived the immediate threat of closure when HMRC withdrew a ‘winding up’ petition.

eSPORTS STUDENT WINS GOLD Barnsley College Esports student, Layton Ripley, has beaten off the competition to be named BTEC Esports Learner of the Year at the BTEC Awards Ceremony 2022. The BTEC Awards, in its 12th year, is an annual event which recognises and celebrates the hard work and dedication of BTEC learners, educators and providers from all around the globe. Layton was recognised by tutors and peers for his continuous hard work and dedication throughout studying for his Level 3 Esports, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship qualification. His proactivity, passion, tenacity and nonstop dedication to career personal development has led to outstanding BTEC results. Layton, 18, said: “I'm really proud to win the award for BTEC Esports Learner of the Year. I’ve loved studying the

Esports qualification and I'd like to say a huge thank you to my tutors at Barnsley College for their help and support over the last two years and for providing me with experiences that have inspired me to want to become a Primary School Teacher. I’ve now progressed on to study Sport at university-level.”

Kalam Neale, Governor at Barnsley College, added: “I'm delighted that Layton has been crowned the winner of the BTEC Esports Learner of the Year. His journey over the last two years has been a true inspiration to be a part of; most notably, the positive impact that he has had on so many primary school pupils and the wider community through his Digital Schoolhouse volunteering and his delivery of events as part of his Esports Events unit. I hope that Layton continues his personal and professional development and can use this award as a springboard in his

career as he progresses to university to realise his dream of becoming a teacher. Well done Layton, we are incredibly proud of you!" Rachel James, Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning at Barnsley College, said: “We are really honoured to be able to support our students and transform their lives through education and it is wonderful that all of Layton's hard work has been recognised by this national award. It is great to see that our fantastic Esports programmes have this impact on students. Thank you so much to all of Layton's tutors who have supported him whilst at Barnsley College.” Two Level 3 Esports, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship students, Tristan BrownWagstaffe and Dillon Bateman, have also been awarded the BTEC Awards 2022 Silver Certificate for recognition of their commitment to their studies.

And plans to sell off the Stocksbridge site - announced last year - appear to have receded. The firm said there were ‘no updates on this issue’. But production was still ‘intermittent’. A Liberty spokeswoman said: “Liberty Steel UK has been producing intermittently in recent months, in particular for high value customers in aerospace and infrastructure. However higher UK energy prices compared to competitor and severe energy price volatility countries continue to diminish the competitiveness of the UK steel industry.” The firm employs 2,000 in South Yorkshire. Mick Hood, Liberty Steel UK’s HR director, said demand for their steel was set to increase.

MAN CHARGED: BURGLARY

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Spend time with a friend, alternating being in your home or theirs. The empty home could then lower or switch off their heating. If you can both get out and about, visit a cafe, a few shops or pop into your local library to keep warm there. Also look out for other places which have a regular Coffee Morning. If you want to keep warm but don’t want to spend a lot of money, why not offer your services to help out at such places. You could be a Social Host just by being there, smiling and chatting to visitors as well as making teas and coffees. Many buildings want to become official Welcoming Places/Warm Spaces but can’t expand their hours without lots more volunteers. I’m sure that any church would welcome extra help at their events and, if I may make a special plea, Ecclesfield Library is desperate for volunteers of all kinds. You can do training if you would like to join other volunteers in dealing with books, but more important is the need for Social Hosts. We can then extend our opening times so that visitors can stay longer and save money on heating their homes. If they don’t want to read books and magazines while they are there, we have some activities like cards, jigsaws and board games.

If you have an adventurous spirit, you may wish to start your own club/ society, which could benefit not just you but lots of people. Heating Your Home The average room temperature of 45°F (7.2°C). This means that the heating must raise the internal temperature by 54.4°F (10.8°C) from 45°F (7.2°C) to the expected temperature 64°F (18°C). The improvement: The Changes • Letterbox blank plate - £29 • Improved weather stripping - £6 Another in our occasional series. The Case study here uses a Thermal Imaging Camera showing improvements made to the front door of a house so that the internal, ambient temperature of the entrance hall was increased WITHOUT the need for extra heating. Now more than ever the cost of heating your home could be making you nervous. However, understanding a few simple things about space heating could lead to improvements and significantly reduce the need to constantly heat your home. The improvements below were made after identifying where heat leaks from a house. Heat will always try to move from a hot place to a colder place. The amount of heat depends on the difference in the temperature between the two places. For example, leaving an external window or door open in winter

will lead to a room cooling quicker than if you do the same in summer. The rate of heat loss is also dependant on building fabric, the windows, doors, walls, insulation, etc. The mix of these give a building a “U” value. Essentially, to improve your “U” value we need make it harder form the warm, internal air to move out of your home. The starting point. Look for the differences in colour from this thermal image… The Cold points in this image stem from: • Failed weather strip around the door. • Lack of draft excluder • Very old, loosely fitted letterbox. The minimum temperature of this room was 39OF (3.9°C) The maximum temperature is 49°F (9.4°C)

• Draft excluder - £8 The minimum temperature of this room was 53.9°F (12.3°C) The maximum temperature is 62°F (16.7°C) The average room temperature of 59°F (15°C). This means that the heating now only needs to raise the internal temperature by 37.4°F (3°C) from 45°F (7.2°C) to the expected temperature 64°F (18°C). So…the boiler doesn’t need to work for as long and for this room alone will require less gas to heat. Upper Don Renewable Energy have a thermal imaging camera and we will be taking bookings for surveys soon. Please contact us for further details. TRAIL CLOSED

OVER WINTER

Local News

Tissington Trail winter closures for tree felling work for ash dieback management Sections of the Tissington Trail between Mapleton and Alsop-en-le-Dale will be closed during December 2022 to February 2023 as the National Park Authority undertakes tree felling operations for ash dieback. The works are required to minimise the risk to trail users from weakened and potential falling trees affected by the disease. Much of the ash tree population of the Peak District is likely to be affected by ash dieback in the coming years, in particular in the White Peak area. Many areas already affected by the disease have already been subject to felling operations. Works along the Trail will only take place during weekdays, with weekends and school half-term periods unaffected and the Trail re-opened for use as normal. Closures will happen in short sections with each area re-opening after felling is complete. An updated list of affected sections will be available on the Authority’s website and social media throughout. The vast majority of the resulting timber and other material will be removed from the Trail. However, some small areas of habitat will be left to benefit wildlife. Replacement trees will not be planted, but natural regeneration will be allowed to take place. Routine safety and route management will be carried out where required. A spokesperson for the Peak District National Park Authority, said: “Ash dieback sadly now has a firm grip in the Peak District, which is why the Authority and many other partners and organisations are undertaking felling works to tackle the impact of the disease. “Our priority on the National Park’s popular trails network is to minimise the potential risk to trail users from trees within falling distance of the route. Taking comprehensive action now will reduce the need to return in the future and apply additional closures and disturbance to habitats. “Whilst none of us wish to see the loss of wonderful native trees, we anticipate that felling along the trail routes will open up many of the dramatic views and vistas for visitors to enjoy that are not currently available due to existing tree cover. “By only closing routes in sections and maintaining access during weekends and school holiday periods in the winter, we aim to keep disruption to a minimum.” Visitors are being asked to observe all closures and not enter restricted areas at any time. Smaller felling and ‘pollarding’ operations on ash trees will also take place around the Bakewell station area of the Monsal Trail, however this will not require closure of the route and access will be maintained. The latest information can be found on the National Park Authority website at peakdistrict.gov.uk

REDEVELOPMENT FUND EXTENDED FOR ANOTHER 10 YEARS A regeneration fund which has invested £71m in South Yorkshire development, supporting the creation of thousands of jobs, has been extended for a further decade, writes Stephen Farrell for Yorkshire Insider. The South Yorkshire (SY) Jessica Fund (formerly SCR Jessica Fund) provides development debt funding across the region for commercial property and regeneration projects, predominantly offices and manufacturing parks. It is now being extended for another ten-year term and its remit widened to support residential, retail and leisure development. The fund is managed by global property consultancy CBRE and overseen by an investment board representing four local authorities and the Local Enterprise Partnership. Rob Cuthbertson, associate director at CBRE's Investment Advisory Team, said: "This is excellent news and will provide an exceptional boost for the regional economy. "It is also testimony to the great levels of success which have been stimulated by the fund over its first ten years. "Through its approach, the fund has enabled the development of schemes which aren't able to attract other funding and has supported the development of employment space where traditional sources of finance are not flexible enough to be utilised." The original sources of capital are the European Regional Development Fund and Growing Places Fund, these have been supplemented with support from the SY Mayoral Combined Authority. Launched in early 2013, SY Jessica's primary objectives are to enable economic growth through sustainable development in South Yorkshire; enhance long-term growth prospects and competitiveness of the region through enterprise, employment, regeneration and sustainability; and provide the infrastructure required to generate jobs. Christian Foster (Doncaster City Council), chair of the investment board, added: "This is excellent news for development across South Yorkshire with all four Local Authority areas seeing development in their areas supported by the SY Jessica Fund. The ability of the fund to now also support residential and other commercial development adds an extra positive dimension going forward." To date, the fund has enabled the construction of more than 3.3 million sq ft of employment floorspace, which has facilitated the creation of more than 7,000 jobs. Additionally, the fund has attracted private sector investment in the region of £188m.

Rotary club fundraiser for Children’s Hospital After two years of cancellations due to the Covid-19 pandemic the Rotary Club of Wortley held the annual Classic and Vintage Vehicle Rally on the 10th July 2022. This was the 25th year that this successful Rally took place in the beautiful gardens and grounds of Wortley Hall. The event being primarily focused on the Rally also, included many activities to make the occasion an enjoyable family day outing, which proved to be a great success. This is the major annual charity event for the Rotary Club of Wortley, as a result a cheque for the sum of £3,500 was presented to Lucy Cain, Community Fundraising Officer from the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, by joint Presidents,

Anne Willey and Philip Sheriff at the meeting on the 28th November 2022. This is one of many donations in the partnership between Wortley Rotary Club and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity made over the past few years, to help change the lives of children in the Sheffield and South Yorkshire region. We also encourage individuals and organisations in the community to continue to support the charity, which can contribute to saving lives. The 32-year-old joined the club in August having being released by hometown club King’s Lynn and made an instant impact in South Yorkshire. Kerr scored 98+12 from 14 appearances as he helped the Tru Plant Tigers to Premiership League Cup Gold and a Grand Final finish. And co-promoter Damien Bates says it was a no brainer to include the Norfolk born racer in their 2023 line-up. “Lewi was brilliant from day one of joining Sheffield,” Bates said. “When King’s Lynn let him go, we felt he could come in and

strengthen our team at the time and he definitely did that. “He had some excellent meetings on our way to the Play-Off Final and it was great to see him get himself going again after a tough year up until he came to us. “I still think he’s got a lot to offer the sport and he’ll be another key rider for us next season. “So far so good with our team building and I think the supporters will be happy as well with Lewi being the third rider back from last year’s team.” Kerr joins Jack Holder and Tobiasz Musielak back on the team sheet with David Bellego also back for a second stint with the club.

A teenager from Stocksbridge has become a World Champion fighter. Sophie Pickering, 15 has won a World Championship title fight in Muay Thai adding to her recent British Sandee Championships. The championships were held during the summer at Barnsley Metrodome leisure complex, where Sophie fought in Rookies Thaiboxing (Under 18 Months Training) 15-16 years F 46.1-50 .0kg.

Sophie, a Penistone Grammar School student is trained by her father, who also was an experienced full-contact Muay Thai Fighter. David Pickering told Look Local “I am always proud of my daughter but extra proud at the moment after both British and now World Champion for her age. We work hard and Sophie deserves this after all her hard work. It's emotionally and physically draining.”

Golf Round Up

Golfers enjoyed slightly better weather conditions from the back end of last week at Stocksbridge Golf Club. There was one last summer season competition to complete, with the Dragons Singles Knock-Out Final. Stuart Marsh and Doug Needham competed for the trophy, with Stuart winning in the end by 2&1. Stuart had taken an early commanding lead, but Doug pulled himself back into the match on the back 9. However, he left himself just a bit too much to do and Stuart closed the match out on the 17th hole.

On the 24 November, the Gents played a Pro's Prize Back 9 competition. Paul Cleary (12) came out on top with 19 points and Malcolm Ingles (9) was second with 18 points. Club Captain John Moss (10) and Eddie Smith (10) both finished with 17 points, but John took third place on countback. On Saturday 26 November the Gents Section competed for Round 7 of the Winter Cup. There was a large field out playing and John Gonciarz (13) won with 32 points. His score was matched

by Andrew Finney (0) and Steve Taylor (21), but they finished second and third respectively on countback. Finally, Sunday 27 November saw the Gents competing for a Pro's Prize Stableford. Trevor Mosely (8) played the best round of the week, scoring 38 points, with a card that included three birdies. Mick Hulbert (10) finished second with 37 points and Stuart Marsh (15) was third with 35 points.

Stocksbridge Secure 3 Wins In A Row Leeds Modernians 10-22 Stocksbridge Stocksbridge Rugby made the short trip to Leeds Modernians in the bid to secure a third win in a row. The weather was bleak but the rain held off allowing some good rugby to be displayed even with the lack of opposed scrumming due to the opponents not fielding a front row. Within the first five minutes of kick-off Sam Whittaker broke the line and made 25 meters ground up the field into their 22, a penalty was given to Stocksbridge but mishandling errors awarded the ball back to the opposition. Mods made their way back to midfield but Stocksbridge soon got the ball back up the park with Liam Dyson breaking the line this time, the team failed to find the first points of the game through further handling errors. Mods quickly utilised Stockbridge’s minor errors and

marched back down the field from a line out before breaking the Stocksbridge defence with two carries and scoring on the far right. Conversion missed. 0-5 From the scrum, back up at the top of the field, Andrew Beal charged the ball in and recycled it for Lewis Bowman to follow the trend with Gary Woodcock picking it up, sidestepping over the pile of bodies to score the first points for the travelling team. Conversion missed. 5-5 Pat O Leary cleared the line by kicking up the field with Dyson sprinting through, catching the high ball and blitzing into a carry. A scrum was awarded to Stocksbridge allowing for young talent Jack Martin to make a run from 8. Simple carries to build momentum came to a standstill with another penalty given to Stocksbridge for off feet at the

ruck. The scrum was chosen with another carry by Martin, replicated by Mikey Hartley and then Steve Hawksworth. A further penalty was given to Stocksbridge where the forwards stuck to what they know

and carried, this time Mods turned it over on the line before the half-time whistle. Stocksbridge received a penalty in the middle of the field for not rolling and chose to at-

tempt for the points over the post but the kick fell short. Joe Jnr Martin made another debut from the bench showing his capabilities by handing off the defence and making good ground allowing for the ball to be recycled into a maul where Mikey “Vagas” Hartley scored from the back. Conversion missed. 10-5 Now playing downhill, Stocksbridge utilised its back line sending the ball to the far right, after a ruck Jacob Crosby offloaded round the back to Dyson who scored out wide. Spectators said the offload was mesmerising! Conversion missed. 15-5 Mods followed the try with a good five minutes of possession but Stocksbridge's defence kept them out with text book oneon-one tackles from Dan Burt and Adam Royles Middlehurst. Eventually, after consecutive penalties Mods lost a player to the sin bin quickly followed by a break in play for an injured

Stocksbridge player. Stocksbridge started the game back with Martin picking from the scrum, storming the back line, dummying 10 and landing under the sticks with a successful conversion by Adam Frith. 22-5 A tiring Stocksbridge and a slight lack of concentration allowed for Mods to score in the top corner in the last play, conversion was missed. 22-10 Stocksbridge now sit in 6th position in Counties 4 Yorkshire and travel to Hornsea on the 3rd who are 9th. Can the pigs make it 4 wins in a row? Man of the Match chosen by Mr N George was awarded to Andy Beal. Novembers Man of Steel is awarded to Gary Woodcock for consecutive good performances throughout the month.

PARK STEELS IN SEVENTH HEBBURN Hebburn Town 1-3 Stocksbridge Park Steels Stocksbridge Park Steels enjoyed a great week winning three games in a row that saw the club rise to third place in the league and progress in the cup. On Tuesday Steels beat Handsworth FC two nil in the Sheffield Senior Cup with goals from Tomas Poole and Ify Ofoegbu, this followed their excellent home win against Bridlington Town. On Saturday they faced another long trip up to the North East to play third placed Hebburn FC, with Steels stunning the hosts with two goals from Ify Ogoegbu and Charlie Oglesby. The game started evenly with both teams working hard on a boggy pitch it was Steels who gained the early advantage when a great through ball from Tomas Poole was dispatched with a fine lob by Ify Ofoegbu.

AT THE DOUBLE: iFY ofOEGBU Photo by Ian Revitt

Hebburn came into the game more as the first half moved on and the Steels back four had to be at their best to maintain the lead. Steels started the second half strong and doubled their lead from a corner, Lewis Macaskill saw his shot pushed away by the keeper ,but Charlie Oglesby was on hand to fire in the rebound. Hebburn came back into the game four minutes later when they pulled a goal back this gave them a lift and once again Steels had to be at their best to keep them at bay. There was a scare when Steels keeper Henry Hampshaw came to the edge of his box to collect a ball but the wet surface meant his momentum saw him handle outside the box ,everybody in the Steels end held their breath when the referee reached for his cards

fortunately he produced yellow not red. Ify Ofoegbu capped a fine performance when he skipped past two defenders before firing in a shot which found the net off a defender to restore the two goal cushion. Hebburn kept coming at Stocksbridge and even with the last kick of the game Hampshaw had to be at his best to get down to his left and push the ball out for a corner. The win means Steels have won ten, drawn one ,and lost only oneof their last twelve games. They now sit-in third place in the division which considering the age of the squad and the injuries they have endured over the last two months is an excellent achievement and testimony to the squad manager Ian Richards has put together.

positive comments from supporters, last Friday we had a stall in the Fox Valley market and people were really positive about the club and it was good to see some old supporters come up to say how much they are enjoying games again, hopefully we will see even more old and new supporters coming to cheer on the team” He continued “it is a really good period at the moment with our young reserve side also doing well and our under eigthteen blues side unbeaten at the top of their league and our first year under eighteen team holding their own in their division.” On Saturday Steels are at home to North Shields with a 3pm kick off.

They have to take credit for that, the application shown has been outstanding and to win against our local rivals where we haven’t had much success in recent times has been absolutely massive for us. A report by Martin Webb Handsworth are one of the few teams that Church have always struggled to beat. They have only one win in the last 6 matches against Handsworth including a 2-0 home

Church responded well and within 4 minutes had their first corner. Handsworth played neat football and was a whisker away with a shot from the edge of the box. Reece High was then set free and his oneon-one with the keeper was easily saved. A frantic first 5 minutes set the tone for this pulsating match. After 12 minutes a speculative Joshua Brown cross/shot for Church from the far right hit the corner of the bar and left post to bounce to safety. Church had the better of the chances, but could not find the target. Goal 29 minutes. A series of Church corners were cleared but Handsworth failed to clear one from the left. Eddie News-

ome shielded the ball in the box. He set the ball for Leon Hurles-Brook whose powerful drive to the right of the goal beat the outstretched keeper's fingers. Handsworth 0-1 PCFC Church continued to battle and press, Handsworth struggled to make any headway for the next 15 minutes. Church had chance after chance in the second half but could not convert. Handsworth were trying longball football and a looped cross from the left drew an excellent point-blank save on the far post from Harry Ambler in the Church goal. Church kept it interesting by allowing Handsworth a great chance with less than a minute of normal time left. Church were then pressed back and conceded a late corner, but Ambler's confident catch in a crowded box was the last actor the match. Full Time Handsworth 0-1 PCFC
