Multi million pound investment given green light The Government has approved the funding for the Stocksbridge Towns Fund projects – unlocking £24.1 million of investment which will transform key parts of the town.

Detailed business cases for the projects have been considered and approved by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, after being submitted earlier this summer. The announcement means that the Towns Fund projects – including the proposed £14.6m transformation of Stocksbridge town centre – can now move to the next stage in terms of planning and phasing the projects, taking them a step closer to being delivered. Stocksbridge is one of 101 towns chosen to develop a Town Investment Plan through the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. Ten projects have been developed over the last two years. The ambitious plans for the town include a major transformation of Manchester Road with a new Library and Community Hub

building at its heart. The development will house managed workspace as well as new community facilities.

Investment in attractive new paving and public realm in the town centre is also planned as well as proposals for a shop front grant scheme to transform and regenerate the town’s run-down, traditional retail area. The Towns Fund Board has received funding confirmation for nine of the ten projects. A local community bus service is also planned to connect remote communities in Stocksbridge and Deepcar and funding will be approved shortly. Other projects include a raft of improvements to sports, education and outdoor infrastructure. Sheffield City Council’s Strategy and Resources Committee unanimously approved the funding offer when they met on December 5th and will manage the projects as the responsible authority for the package of funding. Firefighters save Turkeys

1,000 homes left without gas Engineers are working to restore gas supplies to more than 1,000 properties in Stannington after water from a burst pipe leaked into the gas main, writes the BBC. Several homes saw water gushing from gas meters and cookers on late on Friday night. Residents left without heating or cooking faculties have been offered refuge in a church hall and a pub. Tom Ballard from Cadent said it was "difficult to give exact timescales" on when supplies would be restored.

Fire crews helped save 1,000 turkeys and dozens of cows after a major fire broke out in a barn in north Sheffield. South Yorkshire firefighters were called to the blaze, in Thurgoland, near Stocksbridge, after flames were spotted at around 6.40am, and at the height of the inferno, there were five fire engines at the scene. A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Around 1,000 turkeys and 40 cows were in the barn. Thankfully due to the

quick actions of the owner and firefighters no animals were injured.” They said firefighters had worked quickly to contain the fire which was in a workshop within the barn. They added firefighters had prevented it from spreading to the rest of the area. They later added the fire was under control and crews were damping down at the scene. An investigation into the cause of the fire is taking place.

"When you get water in the gas network it's quite a complex operation to try and remove the water from the system," he said. "Because of the safety concerns we need to enter everybody's property and isolate their gas supply." Mr Ballard said about 100 engineers were working "24 hours a day".

Stannington resident Gemma Hilton said she was woken up at about 02:00 GMT on Saturday by the sound of vans and fire engines outside. "I could hear lots going on outside... so I knew something had happened, but I didn't know what," she said. She said neighbours posting on social media reported water coming out of cookers and bubbling up from the bottom of lamp posts. The incident has left her without gas, so she has been going to her parents home to stay warm and have showers. Many residents have been issued with electric heaters and hotplates. On Tuesday 6 December Cadent, who have 100 engineers working ‘24 hours’’ to fix the problem issued an update “ We do have a mixture of properties off gas, on gas and with poor pressures. Some properties are on

gas, but their neighbours aren't. This is due to the typography of the land and the gas network. We are working hard to get as many properties as possible back on today, but it could be a few more days for the majority of properties.” Concerns over Electricty network. “We want to make sure you are not without gas and electricity at the same time, so your help would be appreciated. We understand how challenging the current situation is but at this time the electricity network is at risk of overloading because of large appliances being used. Northern Powergrid are continuing to monitor the load on the network and have ask that any heaters that are not required are switched off, this will avoid the risk of a power outage in the area. If we have already given you alternative cooking and heating facilities, we can't give out any more due to the impact on the electricity network.”

HUGE SELECTION OF SUITES ...continued from front page Planning applications can be submitted to progress the larger building projects and the funding could be available as early as January 2023. A funding application for a further £3 million for the town centre projects has also been made to the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. Miriam Cates MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge and Co-Chair of the Stocksbridge Towns Fund Board, said: "We are absolutely delighted to receive Government approval for the projects which make up our Town Investment Plan for Stocksbridge. Having been involved in the process from the start, I know how transformative the Town's Fund will be. There is still a lot of work to do as we look at the detail of delivering the projects, but this really is a huge milestone in bringing forward this once-in-a-generation opportunity." “This feels like a fresh start for the town – bringing new jobs and opportunities as well as new sports and recreation facilities. Our community has played an important part in helping to shape and develop the plans and we will continue to engage and consult with businesses and residents throughout the next stage of the projects.”

Deputy Leader of Sheffield City Council and Town’s Fund Board Member Cllr Julie Grocutt said: “We have worked with many groups and organisations across Stocksbridge to make sure that our Town Deal is fit for purpose and benefits our residents and businesses here in Stocksbridge. “It is great news that we can now get started on the next phase of these important projects for the town – Stocksbridge has a proud history of being a pioneering and ambitious town and we are definitely building on that in this next important chapter for the town.” The next stage for Government approved projects is for the planning applications to be developed and submitted. Work to deliver the first projects is likely to start in the summer of 2023. GMB ANNOUNCES DATES ALMOST 1,500 YORKSHIRE AMBULANCE WORKERS WALK OUT

GMB has announced the dates almost 1,500 ambulance workers will walk out across Yorkshire. Paramedics, Emergency Care Assistants, call handlers and other staff will strike on 21 and 28 December, from 00:01 until 23:59 each day. Workers across the ambulance services and some NHS Trusts have voted to strike over the Government’s imposed 4 per cent pay award - another massive real terms pay cut.

Rachel Harrison, GMB National Secretary, said: “Ambulance workers – like other NHS workers – are on their knees.

“No one in the NHS takes strike action lightly – today shows just how desperate they are. “This is as much about unsafe staffing levels and patient safety as it is about pay. A third of GMB ambulance workers think delays they’ve been involved with have led to the death of a patient. “Something has to change or the service as we know it will collapse. “GMB calls on the Government to avoid a Winter of NHS strikes by negotiating a pay award that these workers deserve.”

MP against siting Winter of 5G mast support for children Penistone's local MP Miriam Cates has described proposals to erect a 59-foot telecoms mast in front of the town's Grade 1 listed church as "wholly inappropriate".

Plans have been submitted to Barnsley Metropolitan Borough

Council which if approved would see an 18-metre high telecoms mast erected adjacent to the entrance to St John the Baptist Church on Shrewsbury Road. At this height, it would be almost as tall as the church's bell tower. Commenting on the proposals, local MP Miriam Cates said "I strongly object to the proposed location of this mast. It would completely spoil the aesthetic of this beautiful church, parts of which are believed to be over 1,000 years old. "I've been working hard to improve digital connectivity in Penistone and the surrounding villages, including strongly backing the Fibre in Water project to bring high-speed

broadband to homes and businesses. However, there is no reason for the associated infrastructure to be positioned in such a wholly inappropriate part of the town.

"Penistone's Conservation Area is something that local people are rightly proud of, and St John the Baptist Church sits at its heart. I hope that a new site for the mast can be found that won't be detrimental to the look and feel of the town and this important historical building."

Cllr Robert Barnard, Chair of Penistone Area Council, said "This would constitute an inappropriate development in such close proximity to a Grade 1 listed building in a conservation area. It would have an adverse visual impact on the street scene and not be in keeping with the character of the surrounding buildings." Both Miriam Cates and Cllr Barnard have submitted formal objections to the plans to Barnsley Council's Planning Department.

Families with children that are eligible for benefit related free school meals will receive a free £30 voucher this week to help with the cost of food over the winter holidays. Those who claim income assessed Early Years Support (2 to 4 year olds) and young people leaving their care setting (Care Leavers) are also eligible, meaning over 31,000 children across Sheffield will receive vital support this winter. Sheffield City Council recognises that many families continue to face financial difficulties because of the cost-of-living crisis, with the winter holidays being a particularly difficult time. The vouchers will be funded through the government’s Household Support Fund that allows local council’s to directly help those who need it most.

People do not need to apply to the scheme. Those who are eligible for the voucher will receive a letter from the council with details on how to redeem their voucher this week. There is also a short ‘how to’ video here. Alongside the vouchers, there will also be a range of free holiday activities available for eligible children and families to join in as part of the Sheffield Healthy Holidays scheme. Sheffield Healthy Holidays brings together a huge programme of activities delivered by partners across Sheffield, where a healthy meal will also be available, to keep children healthy and happy over the holidays. Eligible families will also receive details in the letter this week inviting them to take part.

Sheffield’s Treemageddon Independent report, commissioned by Sheffield City Council release findings An independent report into Sheffield City Council’s handling and management of Freedom of Information Requests relating to both its historic management of street trees and general requests has found that it has not intentionally withheld information, but that practices used to record and label information were ‘inappropriate’.

It explains “We have seen evidence that the intended purpose of the labelling process was to flag information, which is sensitive, for the Information Management Team to then review carefully before making decisions on disclosure under FoIA, and not to intentionally withhold information which should otherwise be disclosable.”

Following a complaint from a member of the public regarding the way in which FOI’s on its historic street tree management programme have been dealt with, Sheffield City Council commissioned Bevan Brittan to conduct an independent evaluation into the allegations that disclosable information was marked ‘Not subject to FOI’ and being incorrectly withheld as a result.

However, the report does find that the practice used to flag emails containing advice subject to legal professional privilege (LPP), which is exempt from being disclosed under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and the Environmental Information Regulations 2004, should not have been used.

After reviewing the information available and interviewing a range of council officers on the matter, the report concludes that investigators “have not seen evidence that information was deliberately withheld to avoid publication”.

Sheffield City Council accepts these findings and has ceased to use this method of labelling. The council also accepts it could not demonstrate suitable record management processes and procedures. The organisation has taken steps to ensure that this has and continues to improve. Such steps include

increasing capacity in the relevant teams and making this a top priority in the corporate delivery plan. At the same time an independent film has been released ‘The Felling’ – described by the Guardian Newspaper as blood-boiling film of battle to halt Sheffield’s Treemageddon. The 112 minute long documentary follows a blow by blow account of the skirmishes between the council and wonderfully determined local protesters. There are arrests and an injunction issued by the council. The protesters get inventive to halt “Treemageddon”. Things take a turn for the nasty when contractor Amey hires private security staff, authorised to use “reasonable force”. At a chunky 112 minutes, this documentary does feel a little long. Still, even at half that length it wouldn’t make comfortable viewing for Sheffield councillors – watching bouncers prising the fingers of pensioners from railings in bitterly cold January.

The Stocksbridge Food Bank is testing a new way for people to get help from the Food Bank. For two months, December and January, the Food Bank are offering food help without the need for local people to get a referral form. Normally the Food Bank expects a person to get a referral form from the Council, CAB, the doctor or the Housing Department, a school, or other agencies before going to the Food Bank. For this trial, anyone who needs urgent food because they have none, or very little, can visit the Food Bank on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between 10 and 12. The Food Bank will give

them some food to get through the next few days. Rev Ian Lucraft, speaking on behalf of the Food Bank, said: “The Food Bank is not sure how many people it will be able to support during this time. The people of Stocksbridge have been very generous through food support. The Referral system is not easy for some people to use. It is important that people who desperately need food support know that they can get it. The Food Bank wants to be able to support as many people as possible who are in real difficulty over food for their families at this difficult time.” The two-month trial will be evaluated in February. The Food Bank is in the IKON building opposite the library.

BOOK PURCHASES AT STANNINGTON LIBRARY

Bradfield Parish Council chairman Vickie Priestley (left) presents a £2,000 cheque to Stannington Library’s treasurer Pat Chapman.

Pat Chapman, treasurer of STAND, the charity that manages Stannington Library, attended Bradfield Parish Council’s offices at the end of November to collect a £2,000 cheque from council chairman Cllr Vickie Priestley.

Bradfield Parish Council has supported the work of volunteers at Stannington Library since they first assumed responsibility for managing the facility in 2014. The relationship is an important one as Pat explains. “Donations such as this latest one from Bradfield Parish Council are a huge help in keeping Stannington Library open and serving our community in the way that we want it to. “We still receive a large amount of support from Sheffield City Council, but not enough for us to be able to run the library in the way we know it ought to be run. A great deal of volunteer time is therefore spent on fund-raising, and significant donations such as this one gives us a real boost.

“Any library needs to keep adding new books to its shelves, titles from new authors and from old favourites as well so that readers can always find something they want to read when they visit. This is especially true in our children’s section which this grant will support.” Books added recently to Stannington’s children’s collection include Julia Donaldson’s ‘The Baddies’, Diary of a Wimpy Kid ‘Diper Overlode’ and Jacqueline Wilson’s ‘Operation Fairy’. The library also boasts and wide and expanding crime, thriller and family saga sections, and a host of other books. Stannington Library is on Uppergate in Stannington, immediately next to a bus stop served by routes 62 and 81. It is open on four days in the week – Monday 1.30-7.00 pm, Wednesday 10.00 am-12.30 pm and 1.30-6.00 pm, Friday 1.30-7.00 pm and Saturday 9.30 am012.30 pm.

These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Bus promises The promise from Stagecoach of greater reliability from late November has not materialised. Buses are still not infrequently half-an-hour late, not least at rush hour times, and which often is because one of the half-hourly scheduled services has been cancelled. This happened to me in my most recent journey back from Sheffield: the just after four o’clock service came at after half-past, when anyway there should have been a subsequent bus. That same night, the 18.35pm 57 from Stocksbridge centre didn’t run and I had to wait until the one at 19.09pm. A woman on that bus said the driver of what would have been the 18.35pm had finished his shift and had gone home! Back from Stocksbridge in the afternoon last week entailed a 20-minute extra wait. Journeys from Deepcar to Stocksbridge again are not infrequently half-an-hour or 20 minutes late.

Hopefully we will be calling at your door to wish you all a Merry Christmas, but if you are not comfy with this we will wish you a Merry Christmas outside. As usual Father Christmas How far your gas goes… will be ringing his bell, so children can come out We have come across this rather amusing advert and talk to him. in the museum. Shoe boxes for Romania We want to thank Greenmoor Chapel and friends for their very generous gifts and assistance which has enabled us to send 102 shoe boxes for children and senior citizens. We have also sent knitted baby clothes and blankets, knee rugs for seniors, large toys for communal use in hospice or hospital, adult clothes and 54 homemade childrens dresses ages 2-5.

It isn’t a very good image from 1948 but I am trying to find out if anybody in the Penistone Area knows who is the Bugler and the whereabout of the Plaque.

Again many thanks. We hope to continue again If you can assist in anywhere it would be next year when any gifts can be left at the chapel appreciated. and will be most welcome. Regards Jennifer Johnson and Kate Goddard Joe Pinguey

Safe sleeping advice for parents this winter The NHS in South Yorkshire is sharing information with parents and families to help keep children and babies warm and well this time of year. As the temperature decreases over the next few months, parents are encouraged to refresh their knowledge around safe sleeping in winter. As the cost-of-living crisis continues, families are often having to decide when and how to heat their homes, which can impact on small children in the household. Neonatal services across the region are encouraging parents to use The Lullaby Trust ‘safer sleep in winter’ guide which outlines how to keep your baby safe when the weather gets cold. Cathy Winfield, Chief Nursing Officer at NHS South Yorkshire, said: “The winter months can often be hard for families and with the cost of living rising, it is important that we help parents across our region look after their babies and young children. “Safe sleeping in winter is key to this and can ensure that babies are getting the rest and sleep they need to develop and grow.” The Lullaby Trust guide provides advice and information around bedding options, co-sleeping, how to check babies’ temperatures and signposts to further support if needed. Jacqueline Yeates, System Transformation Lead for South Yorkshire’s Local Maternity System, said: “If you are unable to heat the whole house, try heating the main rooms where your baby will be in, with a temperature around 16-20 Degrees Celsius. Always follow the advice on baby sleeping bags with regards to the weight or age the baby should be to use one. The safest place for a baby to sleep is in their own clear, flat, separate sleep space, such as a cot or Moses’ basket in the same room as you.”

However, it is important to follow the advice from the Lullaby Trust not to put hats or too many blankets/clothes on them indoors. If your child appears unwell, further advice is available on the South Yorkshire Healthier Together website.”

‘I get knocked down’

Former Barnsley FC and Sheffield Wednesday player and manager Danny Wilson returned to Oakwell this week to answer questions in the Legends suite. A packed audience got an insight in to Danny’s time in professional football. Whilst there he bumped into an ‘old pal’ Viv Anderson. Also formerly of the reds and the owls. His autobiography ‘I get knocked down’ is out now.

“If you can keep your room temperature in the range of 16 – 20 degrees, this reduces the possibility of damp and mould developing, which could cause problems for children with respiratory illnesses”. If you have questions or would like advice on safe sleeping this winter, visit South Yorkshire Healthier Together website www.sybhealthiertogether.nhs. uk or contact your midwife or your local GP.

Festival of Light brings Christmas magic to St Luke’s ONE of Sheffield’s best-loved Festive traditions made a sparkling return as it delighted the crowds for the start of Christmas. The St Luke’ Hospital Festival of Light is the annual celebration that sees thousands of lights illuminate the charity’s Little Common Lane garden, all dedicated in memory of loved ones. This year’s event, sponsored by Henry Boot, was attended by more than a thousand St Luke’s supporters and friends. The evening was hosted by BBC Look North presenter Tom Ingall, joined for the official switch on by Denise Wright, whose husband Garry was a St Luke’s patient. “The Festival of Light has been very important to us and I was delighted to have been asked to join Tom to perform the official switch-on,” said Denise. “For people who have lost somebody, it is a chance to go back and feel the love around them from people who have shared the same experience.

Before the ceremony started, visitors were able to enjoy food provided by local street vendors, along with mulled wine and other seasonal drinks. And capturing the spirit of Christmas, there was live music from The Voice UK semi-finalist Norskov, Oughtibridge Brass Band and the Sheffield Hallmark of Harmony Choir. “We were very pleased to be able to invite so many people to join us in our gardens for this important evening in our calendar,” said St Luke’s Head of Fundraising Joasia Lesniak. “Festival of Light is loved by St Luke’s supporters and for many, it is the start of the Festive season. “It’s always a time for us to remember and celebrate the lives of our loved ones in a very special way and every penny raised helps us to provide vital care and support to our patients and their families.” There’s still time to support the 2022 Festival of Light by visiting www.stlukeshospice.org. uk/light

“But it’s also a happy time and one that I was delighted and honoured to be a part of.”

All Women Leadership Team

Dire conditions laid bare of healthcare estate Crumbling, outdated and poorly laid out buildings, in dire need of repair and modernisation, are hampering the efforts of doctors to provide safe and quality care to patients, according to a damning new report from the BMA.

The report1 – based on research and analysis from the Association and feedback from its members – lays bare the impact that underinvestment in the bricks and mortar of the health service is now having on the safety and wellbeing of patients and staff.

For more than 150 years, Sheffield Chamber of Commerce has supported, connected and represented businesses of all sizes in Sheffield’s vibrant and creative city. Its vision has always been to make this great city one of the very best places in the UK to start, grow and run a successful and sustainable business. The team takes its responsibility to be a strong and thoughtful voice of the business community seriously – this means building a strong team of shared values, one with the confidence to provide leadership in the city and lobby for continued progress. The Chamber recently welcomed a new permanent Chief Executive, Louisa Harrison-Walker, with her appointment seen as the final piece of the jigsaw in its leadership team. Photo: Top L-R: Rachel Storey, Grace Brierley and Emma Marshall. Bottom L-R: Louisa Harrison-Walker and Karen Mosley.

In a survey2 of BMA members, an alarming 38% of doctors said the overall physical condition of their workplaces is poor or very poor, while critically, 43% told the BMA that the condition of their workplace has a negative impact on patient care – illustrating the extent of this crisis. This comes as new BMA analysis shows that the healthcare services’ maintenance backlog in the UK – the cost of overdue repairs within the healthcare estate – has reached an estimated £13.8bn. This underlines the severe shortfall in funding for health service buildings, with the entire capital budget for the UK (£12.6bn) not even enough to make repairs, let

alone build new facilities and update or expand existing premises.

The BMA report makes a number of recommendations, including:

In a series of shocking first-hand testimonies3, doctors revealed worrying safety incidents at their workplaces, and how a long-term lack of investment in buildings impacts them and their patients on a day-to-day basis.

All UK governments must launch transparent and independently audited national reviews of the condition of the primary and secondary care healthcare estates in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, building on existing work where appropriate.

Alongside concerns about disrepair, doctors told the BMA how old, cramped and poorly designed hospitals and GP practice buildings are incompatible with running a 21st century health service. They said the layout and size of buildings prevented adequate infection prevention control (IPC) measures during the height of the pandemic, with almost 7 in 10 respondents to the BMA survey saying they felt that their place of work would not allow for appropriate ventilation and IPC measures in the event of a future wave of COVID-19 or another pandemic. Meanwhile a lack of space means doctors do not have suitable rest facilities, room to accommodate additional staff or places where clinicians can discuss sensitive and confidential information with patients and next of kin.

Doctors should be empowered to immediately raise concerns where building conditions present a risk to patient safety. UK governments should provide the necessary funding to urgently clear existing maintenance backlogs – or decide to rebuild sites that may no longer be appropriate to repair – in order to protect doctors and patients, and to prevent any further growth in the already enormous list of outstanding and costly remedial repairs. As part of the independently audited review of their healthcare estate, all UK governments and health systems must carry out an urgent review of IPC and ventilation across the primary and secondary healthcare estate, with dedicated funding for improvements and retrofitting.

CHURCH FINISH ON A HIGH

Close shave

Penistone Church 3-1 Silsden

Persistent fog hampered a lot of golf over the last week, much to the frustration of members at Stocksbridge Golf Club. As a result the opportunity for play was limited, but there was still some excellent, competitive golf.

Church will be delighted with their run of recent form. Not just for the 4 successive wins, but more the manner of these victories. They have toughed it out in defence and looked dangerous going forward. This is impressive stuff against teams in and around them towards the top of the table. Player/Coach Brett Lovell “Football’s a funny game, the tide’s turned from where we were a month and a half ago and we’re really looking onwards and upwards now. So for the second half of the season if we keep producing these sort of performances, keep getting three points and keep driving ourselves up that table we’ll be right up there and right in the mix come April. That’s where we want to be. We’re riding a crest of a wave at the minute and hopefully it’ll continue into next Wednesday when we play Maltby Main.” Fixtures Wednesday 7th December 2022 Toolstation NCEL – League Cup Penistone Church v Maltby Main (h) Kick off 7-45 pm Saturday 10th December 2022 Toolstation NEL Premier Division Golcar United v Penistone Church FC (a) Kick off 3-00 pm

shave. For the month of November, he was sponsored to remain unshaven and raised over £240 which was added to the money raised over the year for prostate cancer care and research. These are the chosen charities for both John and Lady Captain, Heather Evans. So far over their year of captaincy, they have raised an impressive £10,500. They still have a couple of months to go and will push hard to get that figure as high as possible.

Chapeltown RBL ........................2 AFC Dronfield .........................1

Oughtibridge 3-0 Arnold

Chapeltown RBL made it 10 wins from 10 for the season on Sunday, completing the double over AFC Dronfield. Legion had an early chance when Niall Smith raced clear to narrowly miss the target, but took the lead after 5 minutes when Smith chipped the goalkeeper from the edge of the area. After 20 minutes Dronfield levelled with a well taken goal, in a first half that was an even contest. RBL played better in the second half and had a number of chances. When Smith crossed early on for Morgan Cowell to head on to the post, fellow striker Jay Carter was on hand to convert the rebound. James Birch made two good saves to keep Legion ahead, who could have extended the lead late on, with Mitch Savage and Jed Phillips coming close.

Oughtibridge recorded their 2nd league win of the season with a vital 3-0 success at Arnold.

moved to purchase his contract from the British Speedway Promoters' Ltd.

To wrap it up Laura Watton scored a worldie with 10 minutes left to finally settle it.

Howarth, who won the second division with Sheffield in 2017 as well as the Premiership League Cup this year, has become a firm fans' favourite since arriving at Owlerton.

‘Thunderbolt’ rescues Steels Stocksbridge PS 1-1 North Shields

Match report by Adam Allcroft A stunning strike from Dylan Youmbi ensured Stocksbridge Park Steels got a point in their match against North Shields. It was the visitors who started off the better but the Stocksbridge defence stopped them having any real chances in the early moments of the game. In fact, the Steels had the first shot on goal after good interplay between Lewis Macaskill and Kurtis Turner allowed the latter to have an effort only for it to be blocked. North Shields really should have had the lead before the end of the first half. Firstly, Connor Oliver was played in and set to go one-on-one with Townsend. Oliver though didn’t seem to know what to do when he was in the box and took too many touches, which allowed the Stocksbridge defence to get back and defend. Just a minute later, a low cross landed at the feet of a North Shields attacker but he also paused before the easiest opportunity at a goal, allowing Stocksbridge to get back to defend and ensure the first half would remain goalless.

The visitors had another great opportunity early into the second half. They had a free kick due to a handball and this gave Oliver a good opportunity. He got the free kick over the wall and it would smash off the post. That didn’t end the chance though, as Paul Van-Zandvliet rushed onto it but he

couldn’t get a clean connection, allowing Kurtis Turner to clear his effort off the line. North Shields’ defence would be rewarded later on with their attack giving them the lead. It would be another penalty, with a coming together being penalised by the referee despite the protestations of the Stocksbridge players. Tom Potter stepped up this time and Townsend couldn’t repeat his heroics with him being sent the wrong way. The Steels would fight back though and the equaliser would be worth waiting for. Dylan Youmbi started driving at the defence and he decided to go for it from range. His 25-yard shot was a thunderbolt which left Finlay Hodgson with no chance, giving the youngster his first goal since moving to Stocksbridge on loan from Bradford City. Stocksbridge easily could have stole it at the end. Johnny Oluleye was obviously inspired by his fellow loanee as he also drove the ball at goal. His shot seemed to be heading into the back of the net as well but Hodgson pulled off an amazing save to stop the Steels from an unlikely late comeback.
