A man has died after being hit by a car in Chapeltown

At around 5pm, on Wednesday 19 April Police were called to reports of a collision between a grey Volkswagen Golf and a pedestrian on Station Road. The pedestrian, a 50-year-old man, was taken to hospital with serious head injuries, but sadly died a short time after he arrived.

The driver of the Golf, an 18year-old man, remained at the scene and has been assisting police with enquiries.

The MP for Penistone and Stockbridge, which also covers Chapeltown, Ecclesfield, and High Green, has not received responses to emails sent to the Council's Clean Air Zone team, and is now writing to the Leader and Chief Executive.

Following a call for local businesses in her constituency to share their stories, Mrs Cates has received reports of difficulties in using the online registration system, and the complexity of tracking vehicles to try and avoid large fines.

Mrs Cates said: "After further engagement with residents and businesses across the north of Sheffield, I have once again written to Sheffield City Council to highlight concerns about the very real issues that the CAZ is causing. "We all want clean air, but it’s not clear what evidence has been used by the Council to justify this scheme, why it includes the inner ring road and why it includes public transport vehicles. These are questions that the Council needs to answer.

"Sheffield should be welcoming business to the city centre, but the CAZ scheme is actively discouraging traders and business owners from coming to our city, alongside shoppers and other visitors.

"I’m calling on the Council to review the entire scheme and provide a guarantee that businesses in the Penistone and Stocksbridge constituency, and the wider area, are not being disadvantaged and left behind."

Planners reject cafe next to abandoned railway line

An appeal has been lodged after Barnsley Council turned down plans for a community centre and cafe in Midhopestones, Writes Danielle Andrews, for The Yorkshire Post Applicants hoped to build the centre on open land, surrounded by traditional stone walling off Mortimer Road.

The site is close to a cluster of existing buildings and adjacent to the disused railway line, which was a branch of the Stocksbridge Railway that led from the steelworks to Langsett Reservoir and was used for transporting materials when the reservoir was being built. The tracks were lifted before World War One and it is now a bridleway.

The applicants say that the one-storey, Lshaped building would provide toilets and riding facilities, along with indoor seating and outdoor picnic tables.

“The development would provide a meeting place for the residents of Midhopestones,” add the applicant’s documents.

“It is suggested that the use of the site, particularly providing a community facility, will remain in keeping with and complementary to the vitality and mix within the area and will not have a negative impact on the amenity of any surrounding properties.

“The development would sell a variety of good quality locally produced food, snacks, and beverages to support local business.” However, Barnsley Council’s planning department refused the application on the grounds that it would be an ‘inappropriate development….at odds with the open rural nature of the surrounding land.’

Parking concerns were also cited, with the council stating that: “The restriction of available parking spaces in this location would not typically dissuade carusers from visiting and as a consequence would lead to parking on the highway surrounding the site, to the detriment of highway safety and efficiency.”

Singer ‘getS’ tramlineS gig

A SINGER-songwriter from Penistone has been shortlisted to play at this year’s Tramlines festival in Sheffield, writes We Are Barnsley.

Bethany White, 23, said that she was brought up around a musical environment and wrote her first song when she was 12 after losing her grandad.

“I studied music at school but didn’t pursue it until I moved to London at 19 for university,” she said.

“I was going through all sorts of emotions at the time living alone and I couldn’t quite physically talk about them so I decided to start writing lyrics and put my emotions into a creative form – it’s the only way I know how.”

Bethany started rapping when she was 19 but decided that wasn’t her go-to.

Her music now is typically R ‘n’ B, soul and jazz but she explained how she would be interested in doing a dance track at some point.

She added: “I released an EP in 2021 called Emotions –that EP is like a snippet of the journey of my life growing up to 21.

“During the pandemic I lost a lot of inspiration so that project helped me massively.

“It definitely came as a shock to have been shortlisted to play at Tramlines – I feel like as a musician you are your own worst critique because you always want whatever you make to be perfect and for people to enjoy it.”

Bethany was selected out of 1,578 applicants and was picked alongside 84 others – an opportunity she said she feels ‘extremely privileged’ for.

Life sentence for murderer

SPRING COVID BOOSTER

Residents who are eligible for a spring covid booster vaccine are being invited to grab a jab as the NHS Covid-19 Vaccination Programme begins this week.

This latest vaccination is being offered to those considered most at risk, following advice from the Joint Committee of Vaccination and Immunisation, including those aged over 75, those aged five and over with a reduced immune system and older adult care home residents.

The NHS will be contacting eligible people to remind them that they can get the vaccine and where to get the jab locally, with the majority of appointments being delivered in communities by pharmacies and GPs.

A man who took a Sheffield father’s car and used it to run over and kill him has this week been jailed for life – with a minimum of 26 years to be served.

Jermaine Richards (pictured bottom, right), 31, of Wordsworth Drive, Sheffield, appeared at Sheffield Crown Court for sentencing, having been found guilty at the same court of the murder of father David Ford (pictured, top right) and Section 18 assault of David’s son Ryan Ford on Monday 27 March. The jury had deliberated for more than nine hours.

David’s wife spoke of the pain the family had suffered as a result of their loss in a statement on sentencing, saying: “The fact he went out fishing one day and never came home has caused such a shock to me that I cannot accept it.”

At about 5.45am on Saturday 3 September 2022, Ryan Ford went to meet his father David as usual for their regular weekend fishing trip.

He walked to meet his father on St John’s Road where Ryan started loading his fishing gear into David’s car. Richards approached them, demanding they give him a lift to Manor Park Centre. When the ride was refused, Richards became aggressive. Ryan was first punched to the face, before David intervened to push him away.

Richards climbed into another member of the public’s car and demanded that man drive him away.

David approached Richards, who got out of the second man’s car and beat both David and Ryan to the ground. Richards continued his attack, doing so even when they were on the floor.

He then took David’s vehicle, driving several hundred yards away, before returning and running him over before fleeing the scene.

David suffered catastrophic injuries and later died in hospital.

After the murder, Richards drove to a property in City Road in Sheffield. He began arguing with the occupant which resulted in the police being called. Richards was also found not guilty of two counts of racially aggravated public order against two police officers last month during his trial.

He is this week starting his life term, with the minimum 26 years to be served.

Spring Clean

Worrall had its spring clean last Saturday courtesy of the Environmental Group. Organisers Claire and Mel got about a dozen helpers kitted out to remove litter from the centre of the village, the parks and the Bradfield School area. Several bags of rubbish were removed by the Council.

WEG would like to make it clear that a recent rumour of the newly installed sleeping giant has got up and walked away, was an April Fools' Day joke.

The Group will be at the Worrall Coronation Celebrations at the Memorial Hall on Sunday 7th May, 1-4pm.

College’s Hillsborough Nursery celebrates Ofsted ‘good’ grading

The Sheffield College’s Hillsborough Nursery has been graded ‘good’ by Ofsted in a newly published report.

The inspection examined four areas: quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management, and all were graded ‘good’. Hillsborough Nursery is based in the grounds of the College’s Hillsborough Campus, Livesey Street. Students, staff and members of the local community use the service.

Ofsted inspectors found that leaders and managers plan an ambitious curriculum to give children the knowledge and experiences they need to succeed in life.

Dear Editor,

I have noted letters recently commenting on traffic, housing and parking in Stocksbridge and Deepcar. I also noted that local councillors ‘should look in the mirror’ for producing all these failures. Whilst not wanting to, heaven forbid, protect our local councillors, I will say that in all the recent planning appeals on Hollin Busk, Wood Royd and the like, the local council and our local MP, Miriam Caites, have been most vociferous in their opposition to all the contentious applications and appeals.

At the recent Hollin Busk appeal, I relatedly asked the Inspector to consider the 430 Bloor houses being built at the bottom of Deepcar and the bottleneck that would be caused on the ‘school - runs’ up Carr Road and also the egress of the 90-odd houses on the Hollin Busk site, on to the road at the school, in the mornings and evenings. Contrary to what the planning application said, the Deepcar – Carr Road infrastructure cannot take any more.

In spite of all local council opposition, Sheffield CC. planning has cited the lack of a 5-year plan which was overdue and there was nothing they could do to stop the development of ‘Open Space’ land.

I remember specifically some weasely words mentioned in the application documents vis; ‘That it was expected that persons on the Hollin Busk development would not use their vehicle for shopping but would probably go the few hundred yards through the Glen to the shops at Stubbin. Also the agent for Bloor’s pointing out to me, that parents would walk to school at Carr Road because it was within a mile of the exit of their site on Manchester Road and they had put the mile radius on a large-scale map to prove to the planners. When I pointed out that the circle encompassed, the crossing of Manchester Road, up a 1in 8 and

then a 1 in 6 hill with prams and kids in tow, did they actually believe what they were saying. It really does beggar belief what the developers are getting away with.

Carr Road; Wood Royd; Back Lane; Pot House; Knowles Ave; Alpine; Newton Ave. The list is endless. All this development is unsustainable; we haven’t got the infrastructure to cope.

Editor, if I may mention a good point I have noticed in the last year is driver courtesy, especially uphill courtesy on Carr Road and Wood Royd and people pulling into small gaps between the parked cars. This is the only thing that is making traffic sustainable on our estate roads. Well Done! To those showing and acknowledging this courtesy, keep it up. Shame on those who haven’t got any idea what I am talking about.

As I said earlier Mr Hinchey of Deepcar, I am not trying to excuse any local councillor of any particular hue, my haggle is with ‘them Dahnt Roohrd’.

Holding local councilors to account

Last week the Postman delivered a letter telling me about great deals when selling your house. This was sent out by Haybrook Estate Agents with a telephone number on it, so I rang this number up and guess what this chap said he worked for, Haybrook in Great Yarmouth and this letter with my address should not have been sent and he said that he would contact our nearest Haybrook Estate. Whilst speaking to Estate Agent who works for Haybrook in Yarmouth, I point out to him that only the day before the owner who is selling his house and his sign says Haybrook, the owner told if he took legal action against Sheffield Council had been advised, Sheffield Council would milk him dry so he is selling his house for a loss of £30,000 (what action or support is given to our residents). How can they stand by and watch someone get milked dry because of Sheffield Council. Local resident takes a loss because of Sheffield Planning, but yes they are winners to another 40 houses but where are another 40 council tax bills. Well done Sheffield Planning and the other winner, the seller, who couldn’t give a damn about how much it causes stress or upset. It’s not their problem. Maybe we should get a job in the NHS?

People who live around Deepcar knows just how steep and hilly it is so levelling up which is talked a lot about but it doesn’t happen here unless you work as a boss of the council, who is the best paid chief executive in Yorkshire on a salary of £243,130 plus pension of £38,819, so plenty of milk here. So what about planning for the future and local people having to sell their house in Wood Royd around £30,000 less. Yes it is shameful and puts ordinary folk here in Deepcar out of touch, so planning for the future is going to be very interesting. Holding our councils to account this may support the local area here and deal with issues and not putting cart before horse, and horse was cheaper than electric or petrol cars. Forget the train.

College holds Wellbeing Week

Students and apprentices at Barnsley College had the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities and events for their Wellbeing Week, a College-wide initiative co-ordinated by the College’s Health and Wellbeing team.

On Monday, Lisa Kelly, Health and Wellbeing Advisor at Barnsley College, ran a range of sessions including making Guatemalan Worry Dolls, bath bombs and tie-dye shirts, alongside mindfulness sessions held in the College’s own beauty salon.

Tuesday saw students taking part in Zorbing, a recreational activity that helps improve physical fitness and reduces stress levels. Held at the College’s Honeywell Sports Village, the students navigated a course inside a giant inflatable ball.

Luke Thomas, Community Education Coordinator at British Red Cross, delivered an interactive first aid workshop on Wednesday, to educate students on essential first aid skills, using everyday objects, to help someone in an emergency.

Thursday was the main event, a day-long carnival full of stalls and activities, which included information on sexual health, fitness, and mental wellbeing, to ensure students have the resources to access support within the community and across the wider region.

Friday’s activities focused on practices which students can do to improve their wellbeing,

including sleep workshops with calming activities, relaxation exercises, and self-care techniques to reduce stress.

Luke Thomas, who delivered the first aid workshop on Tuesday, said: “First aid is such an important topic as 59% of deaths from injury would have been prevented if someone had carried out first aid and only one in 20 adults feel confident to do it.

“I’m honoured that my community sessions were delivered as part of the College’s Wellbeing Week. I was delighted to see the students engage with this topic and hopefully use these skills in the future if a situation arises.”

Lisa Kelly, Health and Wellbeing Advisor at Barnsley College, added: “Ensuring our students look after their mental health and wellbeing has never been more important.

“Wellbeing Week is a valuable week for our students; it provides an opportunity for them to gain the knowledge, skills, and tools to manage their own mental health, whilst having fun and providing the opportunity to talk.”

Barnsley College’s award-winning Health and Wellbeing Centre is available to all students and offers confidential advice and a range of health services including access to psychological therapies to deal with stress, depression and anxiety (IAPT).

Inadequate provision for Breast Cancer treatment across Sheffield

Sheffield Labour MPs have written to the Secretary of State for Health Steve Barclay to raise serious concerns about breast cancer treatment in the city.

Following a very concerning meeting with health leaders in the city, MPs were made aware that there is a worrying shortage of breast oncologist consultants in Sheffield. These consultants would confirm diagnoses of breast cancer and develop a treatment plan with patients.

Sheffield teaching hospitals need 10 breast oncology consultants to service the local demand, but they currently only have three. There is also a regional shortage, so the city is unable to refer people elsewhere.

A result of this shortage is that women across the region are being left struggling to access treatment.

Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley, said:

“It’s extremely worrying that Sheffield Teaching Hospitals are reporting that they do not have enough breast oncology consultants to support women across the city. This isn’t good enough and with the NHS being in crisis, due to 13 years of Tory underinvestment, this issue will only get worse –leaving more and more women vulnerable and unable to get treatment.

“That’s why, with my fellow Sheffield Labour MPs, we’ve written to the Health Secretary to see what the government plans to do about this. How do they plan to address the shortfall in the workforce and what work have they undertaken to assess the impact of this – we want to know what the government’s plan is to address this and protect women for the long-term.

“This service is now at a critical point and if the Health Secretary and his government do not step in the more and more women are going to be put at risk.

Runners fair well at rainy London Marathon

Five Penistone runners took part in a very wet London Marathon on Sunday. First back was Gareth Irvine in a time of 3-09-30. Next was Suzanne McGill in an impressive 3-28-10. Suzanne was followed in by Matthew Coldwell (3-37-04), Jemma Williams (3-57-50) and Karen Schofield (5-22-29).

the men’s under23 age category in a time of 4-02-38. Elsewhere on the fells but closer to home five Penistone runners took part in the Kinder Downfall race near Hayfield in the Peak District. First back in 13th place was Tom Fryers in 1-16-32. First lady back for Penistone was Lesley Parker in 1-47-05.

Wednesday night saw the penultimate race of the South Yorkshire five mile road league at Worsborough. Kai Sunman finished in second place overall in 26-32. Barbara Haigh was first in the ladies over75 age category as was Ray Brown in the men’s over80 age category. Another first place was achieved by Jonathan Bentley in the men’s over55 age category in a time of 30-38. Second place in the men’s over40 category went to Andrew Heppenstall in a time of 29-02. Rob Lees picked up second place in the men’s over45 age category in 30-48. In the men’s over70 age category Keith Gordon picked up second place in 42-42.

Monday evening saw the second Trunce at Oxspring. In the junior race Tadek KunickiHolda was first in 13-04 and Alexander Wright was next back for Penistone in 16th place in 17-11. In the senior race Tom Fryers was second overall in 26-34. There were podium finishes for Barbara Haigh (1st over70 lady), Richard Cottam (2nd over40 man), Martyn Goodwin (2nd over60 man), Lesley Parker (2nd over40 lady), Steve Storey (3rd over60 man), Ray Brown (3rd over70 man) and Valentina Wright (3rd over50 lady).

Midweek saw the Herod Farm Fell race. Hugh Mackie was first back for Penistone in 9th place in a time of 25-39. Hugh also picked up first place in the men’s under23 category. Penistone filled the first four places in the men’s under23 age category with Hugh being followed by Tom Fryers (26-03), George Parr (26-54) and James Fryers (27-18). First place in the men’s over65 category went to Steve Storey in 35-26. There were second places for Sarah Walch (over40 ladies), Jon Hallam (over45 man) and third places for Lesley Parker (over45 ladies) and Helen Wright (over40 ladies).
