In a heartwarming display of community spirit, the Friends of Oxley Park Group Stocksbridge has successfully installed its first-ever wooden sculpture in the park. Despite the ground being a little churned up due to the installation work, the group has urged visitors to be careful and watch their step.

This wonderful achievement would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the group and its supporters, who demonstrated a can-do attitude and pulled together to make the project a reality. Special thanks were extended to various individuals and organizations who played a crucial role in the project's success.

Sheffield Lakeland were thanked for their financial support and for believing in the group's vision. The talented sculptor, Lorraine Botterill, was also praised for her magnificent creation, which is now a permanent fixture in the park.

Tom Faulkner was recognized for his outstanding work in dealing with the successful planning application. Matt at Henry Boot Plc were lauded for their support in providing the telehandler and driver, and Noel, who operated it, was hailed as a legend in his own right.

The diggers who laid the foundations, especially Midpack Art, Ian Hibberd, and Creative Cultivation, were also recognized for their hard work. Lindsey at Glamour n Grime completed the tripod, and Parks Sheffield was thanked for their assistance and support.

The Co-op Live provided food and refreshments for the volunteers throughout the day, and WoodStocksbridge shared their volunteers, demonstrating a wonderful sense of community spirit.

Lastly, the children who contributed to the installation were praised for making it truly magical. The group has thanked the Steel Valley Project in advance for helping to heal the churned land during the sculpture's relocation.

The success of this project is a testament to the power of community and what can be achieved when people come together with a can-do attitude. The Friends of Oxley Park Group Stocksbridge's first wooden sculpture is a beautiful addition to the park and a testament to the hard work and dedication of all involved.

Janet’s crowning glory

Janet Blackburn is a shining example of how one person's love and dedication can make a big difference in the lives of others. Her passion for knitting has not only brought joy to many, but has also raised over £44,000 for the Weston Park Cancer Charity over the past 11 years.

Janet's journey with the charity began in 2012, after she and her husband were both diagnosed with cancer. Despite the challenges they faced, Janet was inspired by the kindness and care they received from the staff at Weston Park, and wanted to give back. She started knitting a variety of items, from baby clothes to dolls and blankets, with 100% of the proceeds going towards the charity.

Now, with the upcoming King's Coronation, Janet has turned her attention to creating mini crowns, each containing a tea cake, to celebrate the occasion and raise even more funds for Weston Park. Her creativity and dedication have paid off, with over £600 already raised through the sale of these unique and delightful creations.

What makes Janet's efforts even more remarkable is that she doesn't take a wage for herself, and relies on wool donations from the community to keep her knitting projects going. Her prices range from just £2 to £15, making her items accessible to all, while still raising muchneeded funds for the charity.

The impact of Janet's work extends far beyond the UK, with her creations now reaching customers in Spain, France, America, Vietnam, and Portugal. Her knitted mice even have a fan in Liverpool, and her social media pages have attracted a global following.

Janet's story is a reminder of how a simple passion, when coupled with determination and a big heart, can create ripples of positive change. She has not only helped to raise funds for a worthy cause, but has also brought smiles to the faces of many through her handmade creations. MP supports new illegal migration bill

Local Conservative MP Miriam Cates has welcomed the passing of the Government’s Illegal Migration Bill by the House of Commons, describing it as a key step in stopping the small boats crossing the English Channel.

The Penistone and Stocksbridge MP supported amendments in Parliament to stop dishonest legal claims by illegal migrants and prevent European judges from blocking deportation flights at the last minute.

Miriam Cates MP said: “Stopping the small boats and breaking up the criminal people smuggling gangs is a top priority for me, the Government, and many of the people I speak to across our constituency. “That's why I strongly support the Illegal Migration Bill, which has now passed its final stages in the House of Commons.

“We cannot allow our asylum system to be manipulated and abused by people who arrive in this country illegally. This is unfair on the British taxpayer and unfair on those who are genuinely fleeing war and persecution.

“I'll continue working with colleagues in Parliament to make sure we deliver the tough legislation needed to stop the boats.”

Coronation

In the North of Sheffield, councils are gearing up to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III with a range of special events and designs. Bradfield Parish Council, in particular, has taken a unique approach to marking the occasion by involving local schools in the creation of a special flag.

The flag, made up of six designs submitted by local schools, is a colorful representation of the community's excitement and anticipation for the historic event. Each school that participated in the project has been provided with a banner that replicates the flag, which will be displayed with pride throughout the area.

The involvement of local schools in the creation of the flag is a testament to Bradfield Parish Council's commitment to fostering a sense of community and pride in the area. By including designs from each school, the flag represents a collaborative effort and celebrates the unique contributions of each school to the community.

Stocksbridge Town Council has also got involved in the celebrations, with Stocksbridge Junior School winning the competition to create a special flag design.

The winning entry, created by a talented student, showcases the

school's creativity and enthusiasm for the coronation.

To top it all off, there will be many parties across the area on Sunday, May 7th, and on the Bank Holiday Monday, King Charles is encouraging communities to come together for The King’s Great Help Out. Organised litter picks, tidy-ups, and flower planting

events have been scheduled to bring communities closer together.

All in all, it's set to be a truly memorable occasion for the people of Sheffield, and the efforts of both Bradfield Parish Council, Stocksbridge Town Council and Ecclesfield Parish Council in involving local schools in the celebrations are to be commended.

A feast fit for a King

Fox Valley in North Sheffield will be hosting its first Food & Drink Market this weekend [6th & 7th May].

As part of the Fox Valley Coronation Weekend celebrations, a range of local street food traders will be attending along with a selection of homemade food and drinks including sweet treats, condiments, and craft gins.

The market will run from 10am until 3pm on both days and shoppers can expect to find food traders such as Peak Honey with their natural locally sourced honey from Derbyshire Peak District, Feinkost Olives with a large range of olives, seafood and deli items and Buttercup Bakery with a beautiful selection of baked treats.

A mighty meat feast fit for a King will be taking over the centre with Hepy’s Hog Roast supplying a delicious selection of hot pork foodie favourites. Connell’s Catering will be sizzling up a burger storm and Fox Valley will also see the return of popular Greek street food trader, Main Street, with traditional Greek wraps and Gyros.

There will also be a host of fun activities running throughout the weekend with a live demo kitchen on Saturday in the fountain area.

The market will be held in partnership with the centre's adopted charity, Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care (SCCCC), who will be hosting a free Coronation themed craft workshop for children to enjoy, including crown and flag making.

Claire Biltcliffe, Centre Manager at Fox Valley, said: “There is no better way to celebrate the bank holiday and the King’s Coronation than a bit of shopping and some great food!”

The Coronation will be shown on the centre’s big screen throughout Saturday for those who want to watch the Royal event as well as taking in the fun activities throughout the weekend.

The centre’s department store Sandersons Boutique will also be marking the Coronation with a special Royal themed lucky dip, giving customers the chance to win discounts.

Free mini facials, double loyalty points, fragrance samples and gifts will also be available.

And shoppers will be treated to complimentary glass of Pimm’s as well as strawberries and cream.

Thank you to the runner who saved my life

In a heartwarming story of community support and quick thinking, a man from Stocksbridge owes his life to a passing stranger and a group of helpful individuals who sprang into action when he suffered a cardiac arrhythmia while out for a walk with his friend.

Graham Clegg, 57, who was taking his son's dog for a walk in a woodland area, began to feel breathless and sat down on a nearby tree stump. Little did he know that he was about to suffer a life-threatening medical emergency.

Richard, a runner who was passing by, noticed that something was wrong and went to get help from a nearby equestrian centre. There, a first aider quickly assessed the situation and called her husband, a trained paramedic. He immediately called for an ambulance.

Graham's friend had continued the walk, unaware that Graham was in trouble. It was only when he saw the ambulance arrive that he realised what had happened.

Thanks to the quick thinking and actions of the first aider, the paramedic, and the runner, Graham was rushed to the hospital and received the medical attention he needed. He later found out that he had suffered a cardiac arrhythmia, which can cause the heart to beat too slowly or too quickly.

Speaking after his recovery, Graham expressed his gratitude to the community members who helped him that day. He also thanked the doctors and nurses at the Northern General for their care and attention.

Graham's story highlights the importance of quick thinking and community support in times of crisis. It also serves as a reminder of the valuable work done by the NHS and the need for increased funding and support for this vital institution.

Cupola Gallery, a well-known art space in Sheffield,has launched two solo exhibitions from local artists Hanne Westergaard and Paul Dearden. Along with the shows, the gallery is also relaunching its newly refurbished spaces to mark the beginning of spring renewal.

The exhibitions, which will run from April 29 to May 27, will feature recent and important works from both artists. In the main gallery, visitors can enjoy Westergaard's Bean & Menhirs, a showcase of her diverse ceramics practice, which includes sculptural, conceptual, and functional works. Inspired by her love for beans and nature, the exhibition also highlights some of her recent printmaking pieces.

Karen Sherwood, the gallery's director, expressed her admiration for Westergaard's work, stating, "A sensual and visual delight. Items that you long to touch and experience. Wonderful work from a talented artist.”

Meanwhile, in the Long Gallery, visitors can experience Dearden's Deluges, which features a collection of his recent paintings and pieces from his back catalogue. His pieces are inspired by the dramatic Whitby coastline,

and are a passionate expression through paint and mixed media. His work often includes a subtle yet magnetic use of light that draws the viewer in, evoking elements of all of our experiences of the landscape.

Works from both artists will be available for sale throughout the exhibition.

Hanne Westergaard, originally from Denmark, graduated in Ceramics from Kunsthandvaerker Skolen, Copenhagen in 1964 and further studied at North Staffordshire Polytechnic in 1987. She has work in public collections in Denmark and the UK, as well as private collections internationally. Paul Dearden, who graduated in Fine Art from Leeds Polytechnic in 1975, has exhibited nationally and has work in private collections worldwide. Both artists currently live and work in Sheffield.

Inaugural music festival hailed a success by festival-goers

Despite the rain, Woodstocksbridge's first annual festival was a tremendous triumph that brought the community together for a day full of music, entertainment, and food. The main stage featured amazing local talent, while the "umbrella stage" showcased some of the best indie bands in the region.

Families and friends of all ages enjoyed a wide range of activities, including children's rides, a craft centre, and a small soft play area

for toddlers. Everyone seemed to be having a blast, dancing, sipping drinks, and indulging in an array of delicious street food.

The community's response was overwhelmingly positive, with many calling for the festival to become a more frequent occurrence.

"It's about time Stocksbridge had something like this," said one festival-goer, while others expressed their enthusiasm for the event and hope for its return.

The festival featured diverse acts, including cover artists such as Dua Lipa, Kasabian, and Arctic Monkeys, along with local DJs and in-

die bands. The festivities began at noon and continued throughout the day, concluding in the evening.

Woodstocksbridge's first festival was such a hit that fans are already eagerly anticipating its return next year, with the possibility of even more tickets being sold online as the community continues to embrace this funfilled event. In 2024, Woodstocksbridge will undoubtedly be back, bigger and better than ever, thanks to the enthusiastic support of the local community.

Blooming lovely

May is a marvellous month ... the garden is blooming, plants are beginning to flower and show their true colours and it’s the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (23-27 May). We may not all have award winning gardens, but our outside space is beginning to come into its own again - to be enjoyed by friends and family.

Although al fresco living and entertaining is just round the corner, every garden has its share of unwelcome guests … pests that can eat their way through newly planted flower and veg beds in one sitting. However, instead of choosing chemicals to deal with the problem, try to create an ecosystem that encourages natu-

ral predators to keep the pest population at bay.

So, thrifty tip for the month is … work with nature to help your garden establish its own healthy balance. Populate it with plenty of pollinator plants to encourage hoverflies, the larvae of which will eat aphids and caterpillars (fennel, ivy

and Verbena bonariensis are particularly good). Encourage birds into the garden as they will eat insect pests and slugs, so hang bird feeders and plant berry producing plants such as honeysuckle, roses and rowan. Deter snails and slugs by removing their habitats such as piles of pots and check regularly down the side of raised beds.

If natural prevention doesn’t work you could try some organic solutions such as hand picking pests off plants, or spraying with a powerful hose. Another option is using a soapy water spray - simply fill up a hand spray with a weak solution of biodegradable washing up liquid (no more than a couple of squirts of liquid at a time). Slugs hate coffee granules, sawdust and salt – so sprinkle liberally around plants. If you have a large slug problem you can always water in nematodes (eelworms) as a biological control.

As summer approaches and borders start to grow in leaps and bounds, planting out bedding can begin and for many gardeners the hardy Geranium is a reliable option. As the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) says, geraniums have excellent wildlife value along with flowers that attract pollinators. Their seed heads are loved by finches and their foliage gives shelter to insects, plus they come in an array of varieties and colours.

Another popular choice for a great pop of floral colour are Geums - dependable, traditional, hardy garden favourites valued for vibrant displays in late spring and summer. They tend to be easy to grow, don’t need much maintenance and are mainly problem free. Deadheading can help them produce more flowers and large plants can be easily split in the winter and replanted. Hybrid varieties have long flowering seasons and can tolerate most growing conditions.

Geums also provide a garden with masses of hot colour from spring to early autumn – which is loved not only by gardeners but also by pollinators. Go-to varieties include newcomer ‘Totally Tangerine’ with single, soft orange flowers from late spring to autumn; established favourite ‘Mrs J Bradshaw’ with semi-double red flowers; and bright yellow ‘Custard Tart’. Eagles swoop into school

Sheffield Eagles rugby league team made a special delivery to a group of delighted children this week, after they had acted as mascots for the team during a recent match. The gesture was part of the team's efforts to thank the children for their support.

The children at Paces, High Green had acted as mascots for the Sheffield Eagles game a few weeks ago, and as a token of gratitude, the team's superstar player, Corey Aston, visited the group to deliver special jerseys to each of the children.

The jerseys were received with immense excitement and gratitude by the children, who were thrilled to have been recognized in this way.

Aston, who has played for the Sheffield Eagles for several years and is widely regarded as one of the team's most talented players, took the time to speak with the children and answer their questions about rugby and life as a professional athlete.

The children's parents and guardians expressed their appreciation for the team's generosity, saying that the gesture had made a big impact on the children and had helped to reinforce their love of the sport.

Road safety advice ahead of Coronation Weekend

From family fun days to picnics in the park, the upcoming Coronation Weekend is expected to see thousands of well-wishers out in the streets celebrating the Monarchy.

Next Saturday (6 May), His Majesty King Charles III will be crowned alongside The Queen Consort at a ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

To mark the historic occasion, communities will come together across the extended weekend to enjoy art exhibitions, live screenings and even dog shows.

The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) is urging partygoers to enjoy the fun safely by planning their travel in advance, looking out for each other and checking for any local road closures.

A spokeswoman for SYSRP said: “There is some fabulous entertainment lined up for people of all ages and the Coronation Weekend promises to be jam-packed with exciting things to do.

“Activities will be taking place at all times of the day so it’s important to be mindful of extra pedestrians, especially children and the

elderly, as well as additional traffic where events are taking place.

“Some of the parties feature licenced bars so if you want to raise a glass to the King, please think in advance about how you are going to get home. Don’t be tempted to drink and drive.

“We all want to remember this special occasion for the right reasons – not because someone was hurt in a collision.”

As well urging people to book taxis, select a designated driver or use public transport, the Partnership is highlighting the fact that alcohol could still be in your system the following morning.

“Many people still don’t realise that they could be over the drink drive limit the following day,” added the spokeswoman.

“An average liver can process approximately one unit of alcohol per hour. This means that if someone drinks 12 units, it can take them roughly 13 hours to fully sober up.

“Make sure you clear your diary for the morning after if you are planning a big night.”

Eckington hit the crossbar as they took the game to RBL, but were pegged back when a Connor Tonge cross was met by Morgan Cowell and turned in by Niall Smith to make things level at half time.

An even second half saw Eckington regain the lead when Mark EnglandWoodcock turned a cross in to his own goal on the hour mark. Legion made a double change and were level again when Brad Beatson crossed and Joe Moorhouse scored from the tightest of angles.

Eckington threw bodies forward searching for a winner, but Chapeltown came close twice to nicking the game on the break late on, as the points were shared.

Chapeltown RBL 4-1 Cotts

The goal of the game came early in the second half when Niall Smith found Beatson wide who crossed for Savage to apply the finishing touch in a flowing move.

Cotts pulled a goal back when Chris Salt finished well in to the top corner, and rallied to cause RBL some problems.

The two goal lead was restored when the ball fell to Savage to volley in to the bottom corner from the edge of the area, and the scoring was completed when Smith beat his man down the left and crossed for Joe Moorhouse to score his second goal of the week.

RBL travel to Southey on 11 May where a win would see them win the league for a second year running.

Chapeltown started the game without any warm up and with a bare 11 following traffic problems and found themselves 1-0 down after 3 minutes to a good finish from the edge of the area.

Chapeltown took the lead after 25 minutes when Morgan Cowell flicked on and Mitch Savage played Brad Beatson clean through who cut a composed figure as he beat the oncoming goalkeeper.

As a robust 2nd rower who was equally capable on both sides of the ball, Jordan was kindly sponsored by club chairman Mr. Andy Bell. However, he sometimes struggled with his own confidence. Former head coach, Andy Tyers, said, "Spud is a big unit, and a handful for opposing teams. He was prob ably the only person who didn’t see his value to the squad. There is a big hole to fill, he will certainly be missed."

Stocksbridge Rugby Club is bidding farewell to a player who has been an important part of their team for 17 years.

Jordan 'Spud' Fletcher, a popular forward who has played for the club since 2005, has decided to retire from competitive rugby at the young age of 30. The decision was not an easy one for Jordan, as he has become increasingly involved with country sports in recent years, which has impacted his availability to play for the team. Despite this, he has fond

memories of his time on the pitch, including being elected captain of the 2nd XV and scoring his first try for the 1st XV.

Jordan will miss the physicality of the game, but not the tough playing conditions, such as the cold, wet, muddy, rainy, and windy afternoons up at Coal Pit Lane. He also expressed his desire to keep in touch with his former teammates, as the rugby day camaraderie and match day experience are not easily forgotten.

The Oughtibridge based play er will certainly not become a couch potato, as he has other interests to pursue. Nonethe less, his retirement marks the end of an era for Stocksbridge Rugby Club. Fans can honour Jordan and other players at this year's 60th Anniversary Play ers Awards night, to be held at the Manchester Road HQ on Friday, May 19th. Lewis King’s cross seemed to be a lost cause but Cameron Painter followed it and headed it across goal. Mitch Langton seemed to have cleared it off the line, with the help of his hand, but the referee believed otherwise and said it crossed the line, meaning Stockton

Stockton could have killed it off at the end of the first half. The good play gave the ball to Stephen Thompson was able to go one-on-one with Townsend. However, he blasted it over, giving Stocksbridge hope going into the second half.

Two minutes later, Stocksbridge was level. A long ball over the top couldn’t be dealt with by a Stockton defence worried about the rapid pace of Ify Ofoegbu. Roberts came out to get it but didn’t get it cleanly, allowing Ofoegbu to get onto it and knock the ball into the empty net.

Stocksbridge thought they might have stolen it as well. Stocksbridge got a controversial free kick on the left-hand side and Tomas Poole sent in his usual quality delivery. Ofoegbu got onto the end of it and knocked it past Roberts, only for the linesman’s flag to go up. It denied Stocksbridge the lead and with Stockton missing some late chances, this game would go to extra time.

Stockton started the game off well, with Matty Tymon coming close early on with a header that was denied by Ben Townsend, and soon took advantage with an early goal. The initial free kick was whipped in and Tymon was there only for his header to be saved again by Townsend. However, it fell into the path of Tom Coulthard who tapped home from close range to give the Anchors the lead.

And with that hope, Stocksbridge was able to take advantage. Lewis Macaskill came on at the break and made an immediate difference, cutting inside to force a save from Callum Roberts. However, he palmed it into the path of Ross Goodwin who took his time before continuing his impressive performances while heading to the North East.

Extra time would be an end-to-end battle as both teams looked to take advantage of how rare it is for nonleague players to go the full 120 minutes. The big moment came at the end as Stockton’s close-range deflected effort forced a stunning save from Townsend which forced the game into penalties.

Penistone runner George Parr had a successful couple of days winning back to back races at Hartcliff and Higham. At the Hartcliff Hill race George took first place in a time of 19-13. Other Penistone age group winners on the night were Martyn Goodwin (first over60 man), Harriet Drouin (first senior lady), Keith Gordon (first over70 man) and Ray Brown (first over80 man).

The following night George took first place at the Higham Hurtle in a time of 32-54.

At the same race Barbara Haigh collected first place in the ladies over70 age category. Keith Gordon took first in the men’s over70 age category as did Ray Brown in the men’s over80 category.

Harriet Drouin completed the Cake Race which is ten miles in distance and involves 1,500 feet of climbing.

Phil Hinchliffe took on the gruelling Yorkshire Three Peaks fell race up in the Yorkshire dales. In warm

conditions many runners struggled with the cramp. Hinchliffe despite suffering during the middle section of the race finished strongly in a time of 4-38-04.

Also in the Yorkshire Dales Steve Sanders took on the gruelling Fellsman fell race which is 61 miles in distance and involves 11,000 feet of climbing. Steve completed the race inside twenty four hours and claimed to never to do it again afterwards.

Three Penistone runners took part in the Melmerby 10k road race. First back was John Lawcock in 43-35 followed by Jane Lawcock (1-10-29) and John Spencer (1-16-35).

On the parkrun scene there were first places for Ben Malcom (Graves Park Parkrun) and Monty Hallam (Shelley junior Parkrun). There were second places for James Mumford (Huddersfield), Rachael Mayston (Penistone), Rob Lees (Ashbourne) and Deacon Coldwell (Rosehill Victoria

junior Parkrun). Nick Pepper passed the 50th parkrun milestone at Penistone.

Flynn Rogers took part in the Wakefield Junior Duathlon finishing in 12th place in a time of 27-22.

Manager Ian Richards reflected on the season "Ultimately, the season finished in disappointment on Tuesday night but right until the end our players and our coaching team were excellent and a credit to the football club. We should be proud of what they achieved as a group. Personally, it has been a huge privilege to lead this club through one of its most memorable and successful seasons. The rebuild, the recordbreaking FA Cup run, getting to and staying in the top 5 since November, making the playoffs and taking the second-best team in the league to penalties in front of 1200+ spectators are what make the effort, sacrifice, and commitment worthwhile. I love what I do because of the people I do it with and this changing room is one of the best I have managed and will only get better with time, coaching and support.

Chairman Grham Furness added "Ian and the management team have done an excellent job moulding and improving the squad over the season to keep us in the top five of the division since October. We shouldn’t forget how well we did in the FA Cup reaching the third qualifying round for the first time in twenty years taking some notable scalps along the way. As I said four years ago we are all in this together and one part of this club is no good without the other from committee to players to matchday staff etc so we can all be proud of the way the club has moved forward, I would like to thank you all for your ongoing contributions to what we are trying to achieve. We can sit back and reflect and recharge our batteries for a little while before we go again to take the next step in our quest."

Despite the unsettled weather, Oughtibridge were determined to make a statement in their first game after being promoted to the league. Winning the toss, they chose to bat and immediately set about putting the pressure on the opposition. The regular pairings of Jane and Sian,

and Claire and Kate got off to a solid start, but it was the new partnership of Ros and Sue that caught the eye. Sue's "looking for two" approach was particularly successful, and the final pair of Hayley and Renee finished with the highest run total, with Renee hitting three boundaries to help Oughtibridge post an impressive total of 294/2.
