Man with the Pram reaches milestone
It’s taken 15 years but John Burkhill (the man with the pram) has reached his £1 million target that he set himself way back in 2007.
John who now is 84 years old started fundraising after the loss of his wife and daughter back in 2007. Mr Burkhill dedicated his time and energy to the Macmillan cancer charity and declared:
“My only wish would that be June and Karen were here to see this.”
Over the 15 years of fundraising, Mr Burkhill ran 1,038 races including the London and New York Marathons, his trademark green wig and big foam hand made him an iconic figure throughout the Steel City as he pushed his late daughter’s pram, high-fiving everyone who donates.
“I am lost for words. A daft old man with an old pram seemed an impossible dream, but we have done it. you have all bought into what I was trying to do.
Thank you to each and every one who has donated.” Said Mr Burkhill, Gemma Peters, Chief Executive of Macmillan Cancer Support who will receive the £1 million explained that the charity is immensely proud of John, and we are so grateful for his incredible effort over the 15 years. She continued:
“It is difficult to put into words just how phenomenal this achievement is, as John embodies everything that is good in humanity. He is selfless beyond measure having overcome such a personal tragedy and has put everybody else first before himself. John has done whatever it takes for people living with cancer, trekking across the city most days, whatever the weather and taking part in countless races across the country.
“We thank John from the bottom of our hearts.”
John will be walking from Deepcar to Christchurch Community Hall, Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, leaving about 6pm to arrive about 7pm. He will then speak to our WI meeting about his amazing achievement of fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Care in memory of his late wife and daughter. This meeting is open to anyone (male or female ) who would like to join us to hear about this and the other achievements he has gained through his determination. The meeting is free to all visitors with donations welcomed. If you can't make it to the meeting, please turn out and cheer John on his way through Deepcar and Stocksbridge, and help us celebrate in style.

Collaboration Leads to Arrest of Persistent Shoplifter
Chapeltown – The local police in North Sheffield are commending the public for their assistance in the arrest of a notorious shoplifter, putting an end to a string of thefts that had plagued the community. This successful outcome serves as a testament to the invaluable role of local police officers and the importance of community engagement.
The Neighbourhood Policing team acknowledges the vital contribution made by the community, affirming that local knowledge is a cornerstone of effective policing. Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), being the eyes and ears of the neighborhood, play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and security of residents. During their routine patrol, these dedicated officers spotted a person who was wanted by the authorities.
The individual in question, Kerry Fletcher, hailing from the Chapeltown area of Sheffield, was apprehended by the vigilant
PCSOs. Following her arrest, Fletcher faced charges related to an astounding 24 counts of shoplifting. Subsequently, she was remanded in custody pending legal proceedings.
Fletcher appeared before the magistrates' court, where the extent of her offences was brought to light. After a thorough examination of the evidence, the court handed down a sentence of 24 weeks in prison, underscoring the seriousness of her repeated criminal behavior.
Local law enforcement officials commend the efforts of the community in reporting suspicious activities and assisting with crucial information that led to Fletcher's arrest. The collaborative efforts between the public and the police have proven instrumental in maintaining law and order within the area.
Inspector Mark Thompson, who heads the Neighbourhood Policing team, expressed his gratitude, stating, "We are extremely grateful to the members of the
public who came forward and provided valuable information that helped us apprehend Kerry Fletcher. This is a clear example of how the community's active involvement can make a significant difference in tackling crime and ensuring the safety of our neighborhoods."
The arrest and subsequent sentencing of Kerry Fletcher send a strong message to potential offenders, emphasising that criminal behavior will not be tolerated in North Sheffield. The local police are committed to maintaining a strong presence in the community, working diligently to address concerns and safeguard the well-being of residents.
The success achieved in this case serves as a testament to the power of collaboration between law enforcement and the public. By working together, the community and the police can make a lasting impact in creating a secure and harmonious environment for all.

LocaL Lads Embark on charity ridE
Dunford Bridge, Penistone, and Oxspring – In a remarkable display of determination and community spirit, six local lads have set out on an epic charity ride, spanning the breadth of the country. Lee Shepherd, Rich Hirst, Wayne Hirst, Jay Crossland, Devan Slater, and Rob Harwood are taking on the challenge of cycling coast to coast, from Southport to Hornsea, in a bid to raise funds for Sheffield Children's Hospital.
The intrepid group of cyclists will be traversing the renowned Trans Pennine Trail, covering an impressive 210-mile distance over three days. Their journey is scheduled to commence on the 30th of June and will pass through Dunford Bridge, Penistone, and Oxspring on the 1st of July.
As they tackle this gruelling feat, these local lads are reaching out to the community for support. They warmly welcome fellow cyclists and well-wishers to join them for a mile or two along the local portion of the trail. The group plans to be passing through Dunford Bridge, Penistone, and Oxspring between 10-11 am, and the camaraderie
of additional riders would provide a much-appreciated boost.
Lee Shepherd, one of the riders, expressed their motivation, saying, "We are by no means professional cyclists, but we are fully committed to conquering this challenge with unwavering determination. Together, we hope to make a meaningful contribution to Sheffield Children's Hospital, a cause close to our hearts."
To facilitate their fundraising efforts, the team has set up an Instagram page and a Just Giving page, where individuals can contribute to their cause. Any support, no matter how big or small, will make a significant difference in achieving their target and benefiting the hospital.
In addition to monetary donations, the group is also actively seeking assistance from local businesses. They are on the lookout for products that can aid their journey, whether it be through recovery or nutritional needs, or anything that can enhance their performance along the way. The lads are particularly interested in items that could be used as raffle prizes for an upcoming quiz
night they are organizing to further bolster their fundraising efforts.
"If your company believes it has any products to donate that would aid us on our journey or serve as raffle prizes, we would be immensely grateful," emphasised Jay Crossland, another member of the group.
With the end of June rapidly approaching, the local lads are gearing up for their incredible coast-to-coast adventure. Their commitment to supporting Sheffield Children's Hospital is an inspiration to the community, and they are eager to receive any support, both on the road and off, as they pedal towards their fundraising goal.
To stay updated on their progress or contribute to their cause, on their strava page or donate directly through their Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/lee-shepherd12. Let's rally together to support these local lads and help them make a lasting impact on the lives of children in need.

Re-Imagining Paul is an exhibition of two newly commissioned artworks that invite viewers to ‘reimagine’ Paul as a person with a disability and from a faith community marginalised for their beliefs. As someone living with a hidden disability, the Rt Revd Dr Pete Wilcox, Bishop of Sheffield, talked about how his faith and the figure of Paul helped him to overcome this challenge.
Re-Imagining Paul features two newly commissioned works of art.
A framed picture of a person on a wall
Elizabeth Tooth’s ‘St Paul of the Thorns’ is an oil painting that depicts the artist’s husband who suffers from a disabling pain condition, reimagined as Paul. The work explores themes of disability, masculinity, and conceptions of strength and weakness. It draws inspiration from Paul’s famous ‘thorn in the flesh’. The second work is a neon text piece titled ‘I am more like this’ by Bettina Furnee. It alternates between the phrases ‘like this’ and ‘I am more’. The words on display are excerpts from one of
Paul’s letters and when presented in isolation they become a statement about identity, prompting two questions: ‘like what?’ and ‘more what?’.
The thought-provoking artworks draw inspiration from Paul’s famous ‘thorn in the flesh’, which has puzzled interpreters for centuries as they have tried to work out what Paul’s ‘thorn’ might be. Some suggest Paul was disabled; others identify other battles he was facing; whatever the answer, it shows that Paul was a person struggling with his identity, and that of the faith community he was supporting.
Speaking on behalf of Sheffield Cathedral, Reverend Dr Casey Strine said: ‘We are pleased and excited to host this compelling exhibition. Paul is one of the most important figures in the history of Christianity—but rarely if ever recognised as someone who lived with a hidden disability. These artworks challenge us to rethink him and his writings in new and important ways. I believe they will challenge the Church of England and all Christians to look afresh at how we welcome, support, and

include people with disabilities in our worship and service.'
After recently revealing publicly that he is a cancer survivor who now lives with a hidden disability, Bishop Pete will reflected on how his faith and the figure of Paul have helped him to respond to his new situation. Dr Grace Emmett, director and curator of Reimagining Paul, also spoke, explaining the origins of the project.

Macular degeneration
Dear Editor
I wish to thank Squishpoetica for their kindly concern at my slowly losing sight, slowly is the word.
Age related macular degeneration, wet and dry, are two conditions one can get if one lives long enough, i have both. Having lived long enough to be a great grandma to twin 6 year old girls outweighs any dismay this slow deterioration in my sight brings.
I admit i fear becoming blind but the treatment i have received over the last 15 + years from the NHS is and has been excellent.
I’ve learned how to speak into my web pad to record my poems. Now i need to learn how to transfer work to a printer.
Life becomes more interesting everyday. Injections in my left eye every four weeks means trips, there and back, in Hospital transpot ambulances. I see the regions in all seasons. Narrow roads, mountainous streets, forested hills not otherwise seen by this North Easterner newcomer to Stocksbridge. My admiration for drivers knows no bounds.
Sincerely Sheila Gent, aged 93.
All this hoo haa about Voting ID misses the point
Politicians will try and manipulate voting rights to their advantage, be they Conservative with identity, or Labour with age, wanting votes for 16/17 year olds (you cant have same sex, buy tobacco/alchohol, serve on the front line in the Armed Forces etc until age 18), votes for non UK citizens.
How many people bother to Register to Vote? Those who wanted to vote could apply for a permit if they did not have any of the extensive types of voter ID. The number refused voting was minuscule.
It is voting turnout that is the issue: recent local elections, Stocksbridge 36%, Sheffield 16 - 53% average c30%. Not untypical across the country. General Elections better, Stocksbridge 70%, but Sheffield 36%.
It could be that voters are disillusioned by politics of all parties, or as I suspect they just cant be bothered.
Could be quite scary if minority extreme parties/ interests got themselves organised against the main stream political parties.
Street sign
Would like to congratulate the council for recognising that the road name sign for Eastgate was no longer visible having become hidden by a tree and erecting a new sign.
Martin Axon, Deepcar
However it is a shame that they did not give any consideration as to who might benefit from the signage and placed it where it could not be seen by drivers and pedestrians who were most likely to be looking for Eastgate until they had driven or walked past the road. With only a cul de sac and a private road leading only to a few flats it is unlikely that drivers and pedestrians coming in the direction that they can see the new sign would find it useful unless of course they were looking for Eastgate and missed it on the way up.

The elephant in the room: Cultural Marxism
No matter what, you can always rely on the Left to be in denial and peddling truth inversion. Last week we had two letters thinly feigning complete ignorance of cultural Marxism -- aka identity politics, aka political correctness, aka woke(ism) Huh?! Do mushrooms big enough to hide under survive 30+ years? The new totalitarianism is embedded absolutely everywhere and ‘cultural Marxism’ is a pretty good, succinct description of it, given its history.
It is almost a century ago that Marxist intellectuals were in a dilemma: they just could not deal with their ‘cognitive dissonance’ (head****) over ‘the workers’ in the ‘advanced capitalist’ West not doing what semi-feudal Russian folk had managed to do. They reckoned they must be ‘repressed’ (then fashionable Freudian psychobabble, now known to be non-scientific bunkum) by ‘capitalism’, as if a system of trade somehow could be psychogenic.
‘The workers’ had let the side down. We were all blacklegs, apparently. So we could no longer be regarded as the crucial ‘vanguard’ of de revolooshun. Who, then, could replace us? Why, women, of course. What with men bringing ‘capitalism’ home and in turn opwessing the wife & kids. [This idiotic notion is the origin of the war on the family -- cue more Left denial.] Nonsense on stilts, this guff got entrenched in US Ivy League universities and got hitched to postmodernism – a way to shut down debate to stop anyone seeing the Emperor’s New Clothes – giving rise to the ‘New Left’, which sorely needed some folk other than just women to be set to man the barricades.
As luch would have it, in 1968 & 69 along came the civil rights and Stonewall movements, that although almost entirely non-Left were ripe for cooption to provide a load of non-chuffed blokes.
It’s just revenge against us all for not buying the bull. IT’S ALL ABOUT HATING YOU & ME. It was never anything well-meaning that just got extreme. ‘Hope Not Hate’ actually is ‘Hate Not Hope’. They need to pretend everything gets ever worse, and to stop anyone debating the issues, otherwise their utterly absurd political philosophy would be laughed out of town.
Well, Mssrs Webb & Stafford, cultural Marxism is the elephant in your living rooms. Please stuff it in yer pipe ‘n burn it, thoroughly.

Tree scandal
Valued Sheffield’s urban and rural tree stock, and its associated benefits to communities and the environment, at £9 BILLION? [23] At the SCC ‘Tree Fayre’ on 20/5/2023, SCC’s Dr Toby Pillatt informed that the report forms the basis for the city-wide tree strategy.
Should our senior politicians be held to lesser standards than Council Officers? When elected as the new leader of SCC, Cllr Tom Hunt said that the Labour Party “will ensure politics in Sheffield is conducted to the highest standards”.
British Standard 42020 (2013) – ‘Biodiversity: Code of practice for planning and development’ - provides a term of interest: ‘CULPABLE IGNORANCE’. This is defined: “failure to exercise ordinary care to acquire knowledge of the law or facts of a case or project which could result in unsound professional judgement or action”. Clarification is provided: “Culpable ignorance, in a professional sense, is where ignorance of the facts surrounding a situation does not diminish the person’s responsibility for unwarranted or unfortunate outcomes of an action. Even though the person acted in good faith at the time, they were failing in a duty by being ignorant of the nature of their actions or the circumstances in which they acted. In short, they ought to have known better. Consequently, they are still subject to censure for the consequences of their action, even though these were not intended. Therefore, while culpable conduct is not necessarily criminal, it might constitute action contrary to a professional code of conduct and be sanctioned….”
Those of us that attended the three hour ‘extraordinary meeting’ discovered that none of the Labour Councillors of senior ranking had bothered to attend and that any ‘discussion’ or ‘consideration’ of the inquiry report was to take place after the meeting. We were invited to split up in to groups and spend an hour discussing the inquiry and its implications with Councillors, off record, with each group in a separate room. There had not been any prior notice of any of this. Unsurprisingly, by 5:00 pm, nobody wanted to spend an hour with politicians! Cllr Richards informed that the plan had been for the Councillors to have a closed meeting after that to discuss the feedback they would have received from each group. It was another hamfisted, incompetent, attempt at public engagement –poorly planned, badly organised, not communicated in advance, and inappropriate.
The Tax Payers’ Alliance (TPA) has reported that, at the height of the street tree debacle, in 2018, the Council employed 24 Press Officers in its spin team – more than any other local authority in the UK! It informed that this was only one less than the national government department for exiting the European Union during the same period. In 2009/10, prior to commencement of the Streets Ahead project in July 2012, the Council spent £900,000 on PR. Perhaps, SCC would be better spending our money on social scientists to provide research, analyses, reports, and guidance on public engagement, rather than blagging and spending on spin, not least because the Highways Act has been amended to impose a duty for local highway authorities (councils) in England to consult with citizens before felling street trees.
The acts and omissions of our Labour Councillors, over many years, do not appear to be those of people willing to consider evidence and review and revise opinions, policies, or practice, for the common good. The ‘Special Measures’ imposed by national Labour Party HQ, in April, don’t appear to be having any positive effect.

Failure oF mental health support For young people
Thousands of young people across Sheffield and nationally are being failed by poor mental health provision, that’s the message from Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley. Reports released recently show the true extent of the failure of mental health support across the country and in Sheffield. More than 250,000 children and young people have been denied help by the NHS as they struggle to deal with the workload.
This news has prompted a number of parents and carers to contact Louise Haigh MP to share their experiences of the mental health provision in the city and to ask for help and support.
Many parents and carers have been in touch worried about their young people who are coming up to their 18th birthday and have been told by Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) that they can no longer support their children.
One parent got in touch about their child, who struggles with anxiety, depression and has learning difficulties. She was sectioned last year because she threatened to harm herself. She and her family were told by CAMHS, two weeks before her 18th birthday, that they would help her transition into adult mental health services and that she would be provided with a choice of accommodation. This didn’t happen and she was placed in a refuge for women who had faced domestic abuse. She was then told that if she didn’t take this accommodation, she’d be making herself intentionally homeless.
Another parent contacted Louise concerned about their 17-year-olds mental health. He has been suffering with OCD, depression and social anxiety. CAMHS wouldn’t support their son because he was turning 18 in a few months and adult mental health services couldn’t take him because he wasn’t yet 18. This left the family unable to obtain any support for their son.
Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley, said:
“Some of the stories that parents and carers contact me about with regards to their children’s mental health are heart wrenching. Children who are coming up to their 18th birthday, and are therefore classed as adult by society, have no recourse to services, and this should not be the case.
“We have seen that as a result of the pandemic, many more young people are struggling with their mental health and unfortunately, the residents who have contacted me for support, are not alone in what they’re experiencing.
“We know, that under successive Tory government’s that our mental health services have been underfunded and under resourced, and this has resulted in more and more people unable to get the help and support they need.
“I’m doing all I can to support everyone who come through my door, but only a Labour government will fix the broken mental health system.
“We will recruit thousands of much needed mental health professionals and have open access hubs for young people in every community.”

Fragrant Flowers and Foliage
June is a lovely month to be in the garden – everything is bursting into bloom and you can really enjoy being outside. With the evenings getting longer and brighter you can use your garden or patio as a great extension to your home – whether it’s in the countryside or in a smaller, but equally treasured, urban environment.
It’s also traditionally the time to plant out bedding plants which are so much part of the floral display of a summer garden. However, in addition to looking good, some plants also taste good. Herbs have some of the most beautiful flowers in the garden, and are edible.
So, thrifty tip for the month is … if you plant a selection of flowering edible herbs you will have a beautiful garden good enough to eat! You can make any herb produce more flowers by planting them in a well drained site or container in a sunny location. When planting a herb that you want to flower use some organic compost and feed in the planting hole then plant the herb, water at the base and keep the soil moist throughout the growing season. Along with basil, sage and mint, chives are delight-
ful edible treats with beautiful flowers and make lovely pollinator plants.
You could also let your herbs bolt – when the plant changes from being mainly leaf-based to a plant that has mostly flowers and stems. Once a herb has bolted, when the weather gets hot and dry, it loses its flavour and produces flowers that are rich with nectar that attract bees and butterflies. If you want to attract moths, then try plants with white flowers that release their scent in the evening such as tobacco plants or night scented stocks. Another aromatic addition to the garden is the scentedleaved pelargonium – commonly known as geranium –that brings foliage, fragrance and flowers to any outside space. There are a variety of fragrances – lemon, rose, lavender, cinnamon, apple – created from natural oils within the leaves that are released when brushed with fingers or hands, and sometimes after a summer shower. Scented-leaved pelargoniums are best grown in containers in the sunny position. They can withstand chills outside especially if grown next to a house wall, but not frosts and if temperatures dip they are
best brought inside over winter. Cuttings can be taken in late summer. Popular varieties include ‘Attar of Roses’ with pale green foliage, a rosy aroma and pink flowers; ‘Prince of Orange’ with a strong orange scent and pale purple and white flowers; and ‘Deerwood Lavender Lass’ a semi-trailing plant with olive green leaves and rosy-mauve flowers.
Other jobs on the RHS Gardener’s Checklist for June include…
• Tie in climbing or rambling roses
• Pinch out side shoots on tomatoes
• Mow lawns at least once a week
• Recycle grass clippings
• Begin feeding potted flowers
• Protect brassicas from cabbage white caterpillars
• Plant out dahlias
• Be water wise and try to use grey water in the garden
• Watch out for mould on fruit, especially strawberries
• Weed regularly

An improved season was celebrated & a great, late night was enjoyed by all & there were some bleary eyes at the Clubs AGM the following day.
The players will now take a break until resuming pre-season training towards the end of July.
Valley hill runners
Jonny Briggs got his fastest pb at parkrun with a time of 19.51 at Concord Park run. Runners competed in the last road league of the season at Ingbirchworth.
Jayne Grayson was the vet 50 female winner and Richard Borysiewic was vet 70 male winner after the 4 races.
SHEFFIELD boss Simon
Stead says he couldn’t have asked for any more from his side following their victory over King’s Lynn on Thursday.
Earlier this week, the Tru Plant Tigers suffered their heaviest defeat of the year to date at Leicester - but they responded in the ultimate fashion by picking up their biggest win of the campaign so far against the Stars.
Despite it being their first home fixture for seven weeks, the Tigers dominated proceedings as they romped to a 60-30 success.
It was a result which extended their unbeaten run against King’s Lynn to 13 meetings since stepping up into the top-flight of British Speedway in 2021.
The only slight down point came when David Bellego withdrew from the meeting after he was feeling the effects from a heavy Heat Six collision with visiting guest Ryan Douglas.
But overall, team manager Stead was chuffed with his team’s return to action in the Steel City.
“That was exactly the response that we wanted,” he said.
“We were disappointed at Leicester and we can’t shy away from that.
“The first step to improvement is acknowledging that you weren’t good enoughwe did that and we’ve now gone some way to rectifying that.
“It was unfortunate for David who showed some real promise in his first two rides but when you look down the scorechart, all of our lads had a really good night.
“I don’t think King’s Lynn did anything wrong in particular, I just think we were very good.
“It was a dominant home display and everything I could’ve asked for.”
The two sides meet again next Thursday (June 1, 7.30) at the Adrian Flux Arena with the aggregate point also on the line. The next action at Owlerton comes on Thursday, June 8 (7.30) when the Tru Plant Tigers host Wolverhampton in the first leg of their Sports Insure Premiership Knockout Cup Semi-Final

owls victory parade
After their win against Barnsley secured promotion to the Championship, Sheffield Wednesday will be celebrating with the city with a victory parade on Wednesday 31 May.
The team’s players and coaching staff will parade through the streets of Sheffield on an open top bus to celebrate with fans. The bus will leave Devonshire Green at 5:30pm, to arrive at the Sheffield Town Hall for around 6:15pm.
With the route closed to traffic, the open top bus will travel at walking pace to allow the Owls to celebrate with fans along the route. Traffic disruption is expected in the city centre on the evening of the event.
Fans can join in the celebrations outside the Town Hall in a traffic free fanzone, where the team will be presented to share their success and mark the occasion with loyal fans. After the parade, the team will attend a civic reception at the Town Hall.
The bus will travel at walking pace accompanied by stewards to ensure people’s safety.
ladies cricKet: super start to the summer season
Unsettled weather didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of Oughtibridge Women’s and Girls’ Cricket Team as they made the short journey to Whitley Hall for their first game in the South Yorkshire Softball Cricket League. Winning the toss and selecting to bat, newly promoted Oughti bridge were committed to kicking off the season successfully.
A solid start ensued with the regular pairings of Jane and Sian, and Claire and Kate. New pairing Ros and Sue worked well together, with Sue achieving the ‘looking for two’ approach most success fully. The Oughtibridge final pair Hayley and Renee finished with the highest run total, with 3 boundaries for Renee, giving a final score of 294/2.
Due to an unfortunate injury, Oughti bridge brought a keen Kinjal off the subs bench into a dependable cover position. In the field Oughtibridge took an early wicket from an amazing throw by Hay ley to run out the Whitley Witches bat ter. Two more wickets followed in the 3rd over, the first of two ‘caught and bowled’ by Ros and a catch for mid-wicket fielder Hayley, with Ros also achieving an elusive maiden over. The 11th over saw another two wickets for Oughtibridge, the fifth and final wicket taken from a short and sharp throw by Jane for another Whitley Witches run out, who finished 251/5. Enthusiasm and enjoyment was evident in both teams, and Oughtibridge offer a warm welcome to the Whitley Hall
People along the route are asked to adhere to the following:
Do not follow the bus too closely. This is not only potentially very dangerous, but will also delay proceedings for the whole evening’s celebration.
Are respectful of and listen to instructions from stewards
Do not throw anything up in to the open top bus
Road closures are as follows:
