HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY BACK INTO LOCKDOWN SHEFFIELD, along with the rest of England, looks to be making the switch from the tiered system into a full national lockdown as the country struggles to bring the rising number of coronavirus cases under control. Parliament are set to vote on Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s proposal on Wednesday. With Sheffield having being in the ‘very high’ tier of the system, a key guideline has been that pubs and restaurants can only sell alcohol with a ‘substantial’ meal. This follows the full lockdown which began in March and then the ‘Help Out to Eat Out’ scheme that came after. Some pubs have claimed that the restrictions of the very high tier have made their businesses unviable and have derided the Government for not helping enough.

The Wortley Arms’ loyal customers have ensured that it has survived

We spoke to Stefano Ispani, owner of Ponti’s Italian Kitchen, and Jamie Ellis, manager of

the Wortley Arms to see how the restrictions had affected their business and what their thoughts are looking into the next month. Stefano of Ponti’s in Fox Valley, Stocksbridge, recognises that the Government have difficult choices to make.

Speaking to Look Local, Stefano said: “Realistically we won’t know what the correct action to take will have been for two or three years. That’s something we’d have to assess retrospectively. We’re in middle of a battle and we’re abiding by the rules. We need the benefit of time and probably a good Netflix documentary series to give us the answer! “I have made a couple of observations. Firstly, I think Fox Valley as a centre has benefitted from the physical layout. It’s a local town centre with outdoor parking and there was a lot of foresight from Mark Dransfield.

“I think we, as an operator, are blessed to have a spacious restaurant with a big outside area. Even with having to move furniture around and removing some tables, we still have the capacity to be viable. “We are blessed to have a proactive and positive landlord who is keen to help with promotions and remained very positive during lockdown. When you add up those factors, we’ve been more fortunate than traditional shopping centre restaurants.” Asked if he thinks the Government have done enough to support the hospitality sector, Stefano says: “Let me say this; we are apolitical. We served Margaret Thatcher at 10 Downing Street, I played football in the garden with Harold Wilson as my father was friends with him and we served Tony Blair on his campaign bus twice. LOCKDOWN LOOMS FOR LOCAL BUSINESS Continued from front page “Yes, the Government have been a bit ‘Keystone Cops’ in their approach but I must say, when I speak to my counterparts in Italy, they say they’ve had no support in terms of paying staff or bounceback loans. “Italy is only something like two places below this country in relation to GDP and yet they had 10% of the help we’ve had. They’re tearing their hair out.” The staff at Ponti’s are getting ready to go into lockdown once again but are adapting to the changing conditions. Stefano added: “We are offering a collection service with a reduced menu and a 25% discount, we announced that on Tuesday. It’ll run Wednesday to Sunday from 4pm to 9pm.” Jamie Ellis, who says he has worked pretty much every job at the Wortley Arms before taking over as manager, says that times have been tough but the pub, which has a great reputation for food, has survived thanks to a loyal customer base. Jamie told Look Local: “If you look at support that was there during the

tiered system, it was difficult for food establishments to close. “With the full lockdown, we will get some more support which is welcome. We have to hope it’s for the best and brings the number of cases down. If that happens, we hope to operate at some level over Christmas. I think it is for the best to close completely now we have extra support; we were doing OK but we can’t run like that forever. “It’s not been a disaster by any means though. We took a hit but still had people coming. We have lost trade because of how we’re set up. We’ve lost the drinking trade and people can’t mix, couples can’t come for meals together for example. “Last weekend we had some confusion with the rules, we had to turn people away who came for a drink. We have cyclists who just want to have a pint when they ride past. “However, I want to thank everyone who has been since July and before then too - the support has been fantastic. We’ve had a new kitchen team in since January and they have really kicked on. We’ve had great feedback on the food.”

Local News Specsavers stays open with safety front of mind SPECSAVERS Fox Valley will remain open for all eye care and hearing needs, as the country moves back into full lockdown from Thursday November 5. While most retailers will close under the new restrictions, the government has recognised that opticians and audiologists provide essential health care services. This means that Specsavers stores will continue to welcome customers, offering a full breadth of services to the local community, including: • Comprehensive sight examinations • Hearing tests and hearing consultations • Contact lens consultations • Enhanced optical services for people experiencing any eye problems • Frame repairs and the provision of new glasses • Hearing aid repairs and the provision of new devices • Purchase of vision care products such as an anti-fog lens solution for glass wearers through to dry eye drops Humma Khalid, store partner for Specsavers Fox Valley, says: “We understand the concern customers have as we move back into lockdown and want to reassure them that it is safe to go ahead and book

an appointment or come in as scheduled. “As providers of an essential health service, we have played a key role in looking after the community’s eye and hearing health throughout the pandemic and are delighted that we can continue to do so, while also playing our part in relieving some of the strain on our partners in the NHS.” Research by Specsavers showed that a third of people in the UK noticed a deterioration in their eyesight during the first lockdown, so is urging customers to keep their scheduled appointments. The store has put in place various safety measures, including restrictions on the number of customers allowed in store at any one-time, social distancing, and bank card instead of cash payments, where possible. “We remain vigilant with our safety measures to guarantee the ongoing safety and wellbeing of our customers and our colleagues,” says Humma. “We have adapted our ways of working so we can remain open to serve the community’s health needs and every store is adhering to strict government guidelines to ensure customer and colleague safety remains paramount.”

In line with NHS recommendations, Specsavers staff use personal protective equipment (PPE) throughout the stores, wear face masks and gloves during tests, and all testing equipment and frames are thoroughly sanitised before and after each use. Customers are also asked to request an appointment in advance by phone or online through the Specsavers website to help manage social distancing and minimise time spent in store. Specsavers will also continue to offer its remote services for people who are self-isolating, vulnerable or unable to leave their home. These services include: • RemoteCare – a free nationwide consultation service offering advice and care via video and telephone link • Online shopping – glasses and contact lenses can be bought online with a current prescription • Ask The Expert – a Facebook group designed to give people access to professionals seven days a week, who can answer questions about general eye and hearing health concerns To find out more information, request an appointment or browse the online store, visit www.specsavers.co.uk/stores

THREE GENERATIONS FOR WINDOW COMPANY Call 0114 283 1100

www.looklocal.org.uk

HISTORY

From humble beginnings, leaving school at I5 to start work as a tractor driver and general farm worker with wages of £20 per week back then in I975, I realised there must be more to life, so I went to work for the first double glazing company set up in the Sheffield area called Radiant Superglaze. After two years working there, learning all the skills, I decided to set up a business of my own, manufacturing double glazing in the old stables at The Coach and Horses pub in Stocksbridge. I soon moved into our existing premises on Manchester Road, Deepcar. The business quickly expanded through doing a good job, offering excellent customer service and value for money.

3 Generations: This year will be the 40th Anniversary

The company soon grew to a £2 million pound turnover that enabled me to buy my own factory and I won the Yorkshire Television Young Business Man ofthe Year Award back in I983. We are still going strong at our existing premises we bought in 1978, 42 years ago. We are a family run business, joined by my son ten years ago and hopefully his son will bejoining us in a few years time.

WHY ARE WE SO SUCCESSFUL?

I put that down to having old fashioned customer values, the customer is king at our firm, we stick to our old fashioned values, courtesy and customer service - we are customer friendly. Nothing is too much trouble for our customers. After all, it is the customer who pays our wages. When you contact us, you talk to a real person, not a computer, you don’t wait on the line trying to get through to a real person.

Latest products: Windows and doors

We are a forward looking company offering top quality ‘A’ Rated energy saving windows as standard. We are also introducing new products to satisfy our growing number of thousands of customers. 95% of our work is within a ten mile radius of Deepcar but we have travelled further on recommendation - as far as London, Liverpool, Scotland and even as far as the Isle of Man. We have thousands of satisfied customers. With our company, you get the old fashioned customer service with the most modern, up to date products. In fact, the Eurocell system we use is, without doubt, the best on the market. Ring now for a free quotation or call at our showroom to see the full range of products on display. We supply the best quality product fitted by our qualified installation engineers. We also have our own plasterer, brick layers and electrician, all qualified and professional.

THE LOCAL AUTHOR LOOKING TO PROVOKE THOUGHT LOCAL author Neil Morris has self-published a book after working on the project for seven years. The book, titled Thought Provokers, was returned from the printers last week.

founded at the Paces Campus in High Green. Westwood’s charitable objective is to prevent social exclusion - we are currently working with both families and older people who are in danger of becoming excluded.

It is a book which issues challenges to the reader on aspects of daily living on all sorts of issues and Neil has coupled and linked these with a proverb; a piece of wisdom from the Book of Proverbs in the Old Testament from The Message Version of the Bible.

The book can be purchased from Neil via his email and it is now on sale at an introductory price of £4, instead of the normal asking price of £5, plus £1.40 postage. All profits from this opening sale will go to support a local food bank in Barnsley, the Gateway Church Food Bank at Mottram Hall.

Neil told Look Local: “There are 52 thoughts linked to a different proverb which I hope will challenge and perhaps cause a change in the way people think about things, see things maybe in a different light. “It is a book of three of my passions in life, education and the Christian Faith implemented into aspects of everyday life and transformation in how an individual can move forward and see things in another way; bringing light into a dark place; offering hope into a situation of despair; engaging, encouraging and enabling them to step out and step up into something new.” Neil has led a varied life, serving in the Merchant Navy before becoming an engineer officer and then IT worker before medically retiring from mental health illness. He was awarded a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship in 2008 to travel to New Zealand and Australia to research and to explore how men recovering from a mental health illness are engaged in training and education as part of their rehabilitation. Neil is currently one of the founders of charity Westwood 2015 Limited which was

to stay open if people cannot work from home, including construction and manufacturing.

The measures will be introduced at 00:01 GMT on Thursday and remain in place until Wednesday December 2.

• The Government are advising those who are extremely vulnerable not to go to work if they are unable to work from home.

The restrictions will mean that:

Face masks must be worn on all public transport and people cannot car share with someone from outside their household or their support bubble unless they can practise social distancing. People who need to use public transport should follow the safer travel guidance.

• People will be told to stay at home except for education, work (if it can’t be done from home), exercise and recreation, medical reasons, shopping for food and other essentials, or to care for others. • Households will not be allowed to mix with others indoors, or in private gardens. Individuals can meet one person from outside their household in an outside public space. Outdoor exercise and recreation will be allowed, but gyms will have to close, along with pubs and restaurants. • Takeaways and deliveries can continue but all non-essential shops will have to close. Schools, nurseries, colleges and universities will remain open. • Support bubbles for people who live alone and households made up of single parents and children can continue. Children will be able to move between homes if their parents are separated. • Hotels will only open for people who have to travel for work. Weddings and civil partnership ceremonies will not be allowed, apart from exceptional circumstances. • Places of worship will generally close but funerals, with a maximum of 30 people attending will be allowed. Workplaces will be asked

Information about support payments for those who are told to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace is here: https://sheffnews.com/ news/test-and-trace-support-payments-forresidents After December 2, the Government expects different regions to return to the tiers system, depending upon the rates of infection.

Household Waste Recycling Centres winter opening ON Sunday November 1, Sheffield’s five Household Waste Recycling Centres will change to their winter opening hours. The changes will mean that until March 31 next year, all sites will be open from 10am until 4pm.

The site on Greaves Lane in High Green will be open Friday to Tuesday from 10am to 4pm.The site at Manchester Road in Deepcar will be open the same hours from Thursday to Monday. Residents are advised that the previous temporary arrangements which meant that all sites were open seven days a week, have now ended. Residents are advised to check to make sure the site is open before they travel. Social distancing restrictions are still in place for the safety of residents and workforce and the sites can only remain open if residents fully co-operate and use the sites safely and responsibly. It is critical that the following instructions are adhered to: • Always listen and be courteous to our staff

• Do not queue outside the sites as this may cause potential danger for other road users trying to pass, and you will be asked to move on or face fines. • Only one person should visit a site, and you should only bring waste that you can safely carry as no assistance can be provided by site staff. • Sheffield City Council and Veolia will not tolerate any physical or verbal threats to its workforce, and all such incidents will be reported to the Police, and the sites may be closed. We would encourage residents with significant volumes of DIY waste and garden waste to consider contacting a registered skip hire company. Residents can arrange for the collection of large items of furniture or electrical equipment using the bulky waste collection service.

Residents wishing to visit a site in a van, 4x4 with pick up or in a car visit. These can be applied for by callwith a trailer, will require a per- ing Veolia on 0114 273 4567 or e-mail mit, or permission for a one off sheffieldenquiries@veolia.co.uk .

The sites are for the use of Sheffield residents only and not for traders, who must use a properly licensed waste disposal sites.

Penistone Cinema Organ Trust receives lifeline grant from Government PENISTONE Cinema Organ Trust is one of 445 heritage organisations across the country set to receive a lifesaving financial boost from the government thanks to the £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund to help them through the coronavirus pandemic. The 445 organisations will share £103 million, including Penistone Cinema Organ Trust to help restart vital reconstruction work and maintenance on cherished heritage sites, keeping venues open and supporting those working in the sector. The Penistone Cinema Organ Trust have been awarded £58,000 in order to protect their historic Cinema Organs based at The Astoria Centre in Barnsley. Funding has been provided for the installation of ambient heating equipment, adaptation of reception and toilet areas in order to maintain social distancing, the purchase of PPE for volunteers, installation of cameras in order to film virtual events for broadcast on social media and to part cover operational premises costs. This vital funding is from the Culture Recovery Fund for Heritage and the Heritage Stimulus Fund - funded by Government and administered at arms length by Historic England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Both funds are part of the Government’s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund which is designed to secure the future of Britain’s museums, galleries, theatres, independent cinemas, heritage sites and music venues with emergency grants and loans. Kevin Grunill, Chairman, Penistone Cinema Organ Trust, said: “This funding is a real lifeline to the future existence of the Penistone

Cinema Organ Trust and the work we do with regards to the preservation of the cinema organ both at the Penistone Paramount and the Astoria Centre in Barnsley. “We are a relatively small group run entirely by volunteers but have made a big impact in the UK as one of the foremost cinema organ preservation groups, with the formation of the National Theatre Organ Heritage Centre at Barugh Green, Barnsley. “The cancellation of all our public events because of COVID19 restrictions dealt our volunteer group a huge blow and threatened our very survival, however because of this grant from the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund we are able to continue our preservation work, look at new ways in which to engage with an audience and remain sustainable. This wouldn’t have been possible without the Government’s support, for which we are immensely grateful and thankful.” The Astoria Centre at Barugh Green, Barnsley is the home of the National Theatre Organ Heritage Centre, which houses a large collection of 1930s Art Deco Cinema/Theatre Pipe Organs, together with an extensive archive of Cinema Organ memorabilia and sheet music. “Our usual events include music and memories afternoons and afternoon tea dances, all of which sadly cannot take place at the current time due to regulations. We have piloted a virtual concert on Youtube recently, featuring the star organist from the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool; Phil Kelsall. This has been viewed by people from all over the world, so is helping to promote the work we do, as well as keep audiences engaged”, said Kevin.

Most of the positives of what has been achieved in recent years in Stocksbridge are two social groups, which even before the coronavirus outbreak were an absolute lifeline to many of all ages in the community and are absolutely essential at the moment.

Last week someone made a lot of accusations regarding our newly-elected MP who only took the post up 10 months ago.

It had a feel of political venom and bitterness. From what I’ve seen and heard from her, she has come Alistair Nicoll across as a good supporter of this area and is trying to improve it.

STEAD HOPES RIDERS RETURN SHEFFIELD boss Simon Stead is keeping his fingers crossed every 2020 rider is available for next year. Rumours are already doing the rounds about some restrictions for riders on what leagues they can race in when they sign a contract in Poland. Stead admits planning for 2021 cannot take place with any confidence right now and it could be January before decisions are made. Club bosses will also need to keep a close eye on football and when crowds can return to elite sport,

which is what Premiership and Championship speedway is classed as. Said Stead: “I’d love to think most of our team for 2020 will be available for next year. “At this stage that’s all we can say really. There are still a lot of unknowns regarding 2021 and if we start in April it’s still five months away and who knows where the world will be.

Oughtibridge WM Ladies 6-1 Leicester City Ladies

over it now, we know a lot more about the virus and I’m hopeful we’ll have some good news in the not too distant future.

AFTER the disappointment of last week’s late postponement at Kettering, when the home club refused to host the game, Oughtibridge War Memorial Ladies did their talking on the pitch with an ultimately convincing win against Leicester City.

“The work which went into signing the likes of Nicki Pedersen and Jack Holder was immense and the boys were buzzing about riding for us. I’m hoping that still remains in place for 2021.

But it took a late flurry of goals to put a gloss on the result. Leicester opened the scoring after some hesitant defending and Oughtibridge could be forgiven for thinking a repeat of last season’s smash and grab 1-0 loss was on the cards but Laura Cain tucked in an equaliser before the break to calm the nerves.

Promoters are understood to be planning a start over Easter next season in line with Rugby League below Super League level – but it will all depend on when crowds can return to football.

“We had so much anticipation for 2020 and it was a massive disappointment when we lost the entire league season. I was gutted but I’m

In the second half, the WM Ladies got their noses in front as Millie Kenyon finished off a good move and with a bench of attacking options, Oughtibridge sent on Zoe Beresford and 16-year-old Emily Fowler and they duly obliged by bagging four goals between them, Beresford with a hat trick and Fowler latching onto a sweet cross from Milly Wilson to finish with aplomb for the pick of the goals on her debut, much to the joy of her team mates. Having played 90 minutes and scored for the under 18s the previous day, this was some weekend for Fowler.

Stocksbridge Rugby continue recruitment drive STOCKSBRIDGE Rugby club continue to train, under the strict RFU return to training protocols, and continue to add to their playing roster with speedy centre or winger Dan Burt (pictured) the latest high profile recruit to join the club. The 23-year-old Sheffield born utility back is a recent Rugby League convert, having previously played for Dearne Valley Bulldogs, Sheffield Hawks and a brief spell with professional outfit Keighley Cougars. He was persuaded to give the Union variety of the game a go by his work colleagues, some of whom also play for Stocksbridge. “As ever, joining a new club environment was a bit daunting at first, said Burt. “However, everyone was welcoming and helped me understand the new calls for the Union game. Burt is comfortable with the Stocksbridge set up. He said: “The coaches are experienced, take the time to explain what is required and help with any difficulties. There is a clear pathway to the first XV for the younger players too, it is a well run club. During the enforced break from fixtures, Burt has used the training time to get acclimatised to the differences between the two codes of Rugby. “The biggest single difference is not having to retreat 10 metres at every tackle, but I’ve got plenty more to learn, he said.

Meanwhile, the RFU Council has taken the decision to cancel all the adult competitive leagues in level three and below for the whole of the 2020/2021 season. This is on the basis that a meaningful, competitive and full contact season is no longer feasible. Clearly this is related to the continuing pandemic and is not totally unexpected. Stocksbridge Rugby chairman, Andy Bell, said: “Subject to the Government and the RFU protocols, we are trying to work towards a state where some competitive rugby can be played. “Hhowever, we need to be realistic about the prevalence of covid-19 cases in society and the introduction of further restrictions’ he added. This will affect the Yorkshire League system where Stocksbridge Rugby were hoping for a promotion push this term.

Church progress in the FA Vase PENISTONE Church have been busy in the transfer market and in the FA Vase this week.

The match was always in Church’s hands and on occasion it was Church that invited the pressure onto themselves. However, AFC failed to make the most of their share of possession and play.

Church said goodbye and thank you to Elliott Firth who leaves to join Hemsworth Miners’ Welfare. Meanwhile, they welcomed Kurtis Turner and Jon Pugh from Stocksbridge Park Steels who signed in time for selection in Saturday’s FA Vase first round tie.

Luke Stewart often outstripped the defence with his extra pace on one side and Sam Scrivens did the same on the other. Church pressed down their right gaining a free kick on the touchline near the halfway line.

Goals at 29, 41 and 83 minutes settled this match as Church beat AFC Liverpool 3-0 in a self-assured display.

Tom Charlesworth played the ball to Jack Shepherd,

but it was cleared. However, Church came straight back and a scruffy clearance by AFC fell to Jordan Coduri on the right. He turned and dribbled across the defence, checked back and passed the ball low beyond the goalie to the right of goal. Church were now dominant, outpacing the midfield and winning the majority of 50/50s. On 41 minutes, the ball eluded the AFC defence and Brett Lovell was on hand to skilfully guide the ball in from

six yards on his 250th start for the club. AFC came out with great gusto and had three corners in quick succession followed by a couple of free kicks. Church rode out the pressure and after 60 minutes started to control the game again. Church finished off the match with an 82nd minute goal. The ball was crossed in low and hard from the left, Kieran Ryan headed it into the top left corner of the gaol with a marvellous header on the turn.

Park Steels lose to Chase Town after difficult week STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels lost 2-1 at Chasetown FC after a week of turmoil for manager Chris Hilton. Joe Lumsden is recovering in hospital after ankle surgery, Jordan Lemon is isolating with covid related problems and Goodwin, Trench and McFayden were suspended. Brett Lovell scored his 53rd goal for Church Pic: Ian Revitt

Two players also left the club late on Thursday with Kurtis Turner and Jon Pugh joining local rivals Penistone. But the quickly assembled side didn’t disgrace themselves against big strong opposition. Some of the new lads can be happy with their performances, especially Charlie Cope, who was drafted in from the reserves. He marked his debut as a substi-

tute with the best goal of the game and had another effort well saved. New faces Harrison Foulstone, Sam Finland and Tom Whiting all made a positive contribution. Steels will hope this could be the start of something good and the youngsters that are coming through the system certainly have a big part to play in the future.
