£10,0000 reward offered after Grenoside blaze A GRENOSIDE couple are offering a £10,000 reward for information leading to a successful prosecution of the person responsible for an arson attack on their property. Chris and Debby Durrans, both 58, were asleep at their home on Vicarage Road in Grenoside at around 1.30am on Saturday November 7. Chris says he was woken up by a noise and a flash of light. It was immediately apparent to him that his car had been set on fire and that the blaze was spreading to their home. Chris told Look Local: “We were asleep and I was woken up by a noise and a flash of a fire lighting up. I think it had only just been done.

“They’ve poured petrol over the bonnet of the car and then set it on fire. It’s then taken to the house as well. “We’re very lucky. It could have been so much worse if we hadn’t got out quickly.” The couple, who ran The Angel pub on Main Street for 12 years, escaped without injury but their BMW X7 was completely destroyed and they are living in just half of their house after part of it was damaged by smoke and flames. Chris said: “Luckily, it’s quite a long house and so we are able to carry on living at home and the community, our friends and family, have been fantastic. I’d also like to thank the Police and fire brigade. They’ve been unbeliev-

able from start to finish. The PCSOs were the nicest people you could meet and CID are working hard on collecting evidence.” A red Audi A3 was also set on fire on Thursday November 5 and Chris believes the two incidents are linked. He also believes he knows who is responsible for the attack on his home. Chris said: “I’ve a very strong idea of who is behind it. It’s just a matter of collecting the evidence. If the person that did it is reading this, I think you should hand yourself in to the police and get it done with.” Anyone with information can call South Yorkshire Police on 101.

‘Ultimate team’ husband and wife pass away within days of each other A STOCKSBRIDGE couple who passed away within a week of each other have been described as “the ultimate team” by daughter Jane Harrison. Eric Copley, 87, died on October 23, with wife Jean following on October 27, aged 82. Eric grew up on Bate Green Farm and Jean on Ford Lane. They married on December 6 1958 at St Matthias Church. They were married for 62 years and on their Diamond wedding anniversary received a congratulatory card from HRH the Queen and were understandably very proud of this. Both worked at Fox’s from leaving school, Eric as an electrician in the GEW and Jean as a computer operator. Alongside his full time job as an electrician, Eric worked for the retained

fire service joining in 1959 serving for nearly 29 years, the last 11 of those as Station Officer. He was well respected by his friends and colleagues at Stocksbridge and also by the staff at the Head Quarters in Sheffield. In 1984 he was awarded a long service medal. Eric thoroughly enjoyed his role in the fire service. Daughter Jane told Look Local: “In the early years, to alert the firemen that there were required to attend an incident, the old air raid siren at the steel works was sounded, also large electronic bells were installed in their houses. Eric was regularly spotted racing down Pot House Lane on his bicycle high tailing it to the fire station to attend a call out!” In 1988 Eric received the British Empire Medal for his services to the community, which was an achievement that he and

all his family and friends were extremely proud of. But Eric couldn’t have achieved all that he did without Jean’s support and her tireless work in the background. While Eric was either working Fox’s or attending a fire incident Jean worked hard looking after the family home making sure that all ran smoothly. About 20 years ago

Eric had a triple bypass operation. This led him to becoming a volunteer at the Northern General Hospital for Sheffield Open Heart Club, known as SHOC. Eric helped SHOC for 15 years, visiting patients before their operations to calm any concerns they had and also with

For 10 years Eric was the volunteer co-ordinator organising all the volunteers as to who attended the hospital and when. This title should really have belonged to Jean as she was

always the one who sorted out the rota! In 2018 Eric received a hospital volunteer award in recognition of work and commitment to SHOC. Daughter Jane said: “Jean and Eric were the ultimate team, Eric the front man and Jean the rock that held it all together.”

Jean’s help would raise funds by collections at supermarkets and running a stall at various fund raising events.

Your business can apply if you were forced to close on October 23 under Tier three local restrictions. The types of business eligible are pubs, bars and licensed premises (who do not serve substantial meals), casinos,

betting shops, adult gaming centres and soft play centres. Your business can apply if you were forced to close on November 5 under national lockdown restrictions. The types of business eligible are non-essential retail, hospitality and leisure. The Lockdown Business Support Grant helps businesses that have been required to close due to new national lockdown restrictions by providing grants of £1,334, £2,000 or £3,000 every four weeks whilst the restrictions are in place. The amount you receive depends on the rateable value (RV) of the property and the length of time the business remains closed. Unlike previously, properties with a rateable value

of more than £51,000 may apply. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “The new national lockdown restrictions bring yet more uncertainty for our businesses at an already extremely difficult time. “We are doing all we can to make sure we can support them during the lockdown period and beyond and I want to urge all businesses eligible for a grant to apply and we will continue our conversations with Government to make the case for further support across South Yorkshire.” Businesses who are forced to close but are not registered with business rates and businesses who remain open but af-

fected by Covid-19 should not use this scheme. The council are working on a scheme to support the wider business base and will provide updates as soon as possible. Businesses wishing to stay informed with the latest updates, should sign up to Sheffield City Council’s email alert service and follow Business Sheffield and Sheffield City Council’s social media channels. Business Sheffield’s team of advisors are available to help businesses navigate their way through the available support. THREE GENERATIONS FOR WINDOW COMPANY Call 0114 283 1100

www.looklocal.org.uk

HISTORY

From humble beginnings, leaving school at I5 to start work as a tractor driver and general farm worker with wages of £20 per week back then in I975, I realised there must be more to life, so I went to work for the first double glazing company set up in the Sheffield area called Radiant Superglaze. After two years working there, learning all the skills, I decided to set up a business of my own, manufacturing double glazing in the old stables at The Coach and Horses pub in Stocksbridge. I soon moved into our existing premises on Manchester Road, Deepcar. The business quickly expanded through doing a good job, offering excellent customer service and value for money.

3 Generations: This year will be the 40th Anniversary

The company soon grew to a £2 million pound turnover that enabled me to buy my own factory and I won the Yorkshire Television Young Business Man ofthe Year Award back in I983. We are still going strong at our existing premises we bought in 1978, 42 years ago. We are a family run business, joined by my son ten years ago and hopefully his son will bejoining us in a few years time.

WHY ARE WE SO SUCCESSFUL?

I put that down to having old fashioned customer values, the customer is king at our firm, we stick to our old fashioned values, courtesy and customer service - we are customer friendly. Nothing is too much trouble for our customers. After all, it is the customer who pays our wages. When you contact us, you talk to a real person, not a computer, you don’t wait on the line trying to get through to a real person.

Latest products: Windows and doors

We are a forward looking company offering top quality ‘A’ Rated energy saving windows as standard. We are also introducing new products to satisfy our growing number of thousands of customers. 95% of our work is within a ten mile radius of Deepcar but we have travelled further on recommendation - as far as London, Liverpool, Scotland and even as far as the Isle of Man. We have thousands of satisfied customers. With our company, you get the old fashioned customer service with the most modern, up to date products. In fact, the Eurocell system we use is, without doubt, the best on the market. Ring now for a free quotation or call at our showroom to see the full range of products on display. We supply the best quality product fitted by our qualified installation engineers. We also have our own plasterer, brick layers and electrician, all qualified and professional.

THIEVES STRIKE AT LIBRARY ECCLESFIELD Library have reported that they have suffered yet another theft from their garden on October 30. On this occasion, someone, wearing a hoodie and boots dug up a conifer tree and took it home with them. A spokesperson for the library said: “Ecclesfield Library is a non-profit charity run by volunteers for the local community. “We now have a lovely outside area, cared for by our volunteer gardener, and all the plants in our garden are paid for by donations. “We would like to ask that whoever keeps taking things please stop. Our library, and the garden, are here for the benefit of our local community.”

Chocks away: helicopters get busy for moorland conservation THIS is another busy year for Moors for the Future Partnership’s conservation activities. With the building of over 6,000 dams and the spreading of over 3,500 bags of heather brash across the Peak District and South Pennine moors, these heavy materials need to get on to the remote moors and the Partnership is working with contractors to ensure it can continue protecting the environment despite the challenges of a second lockdown. It takes months to build several thousand dams, and is a race against time to get the work finished before the birds begin to nest again in spring. The building work cannot start until the materials are on the moors, and the only feasible way to do this is to fly them in via helicopter. Helicopters don’t cause damage to the precious moorland landscape. They can also carry greater loads of materials much more quickly than ground vehicles can. Moors for the Future Partnership’s carbon audit has shown that the resulting healthy moorland environment will absorb more carbon

than the helicopters will have emitted during conservation activities. Similarly, 3,500 bags of heather brash need to be airlifted onto the moors to be spread onto the bare peat and begin to revegetate it. So that the helicopters are available later on in the season to airlift this heather brash, they need to be freed up. This means that the helicopters have to have finished the task of getting the materials for dams onto the moors before they can airlift the heather brash. Adding to this complicated logistical operation, the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the urgency of the operations, but the team has been working hard to get the work completed as early as possible. Between August and October 2019, over 2,000 dams were constructed, but in August to October 2020, over 6,000 dams were built. Chris Dean, head of programme delivery at Moors for the Future Partnership, said: “The conservation works season is always a very busy time of year for our staff, contrac-

tors and partners. This year everyone involved is putting in a huge amount of effort to ensure that the work gets done despite the increased challenges. With six months of experience of our new ways of working, we have robust COVID secure procedures and processes that will ensure that everyone stays safe while completing this work that is vital to protect our moors.” So as lockdown begins the skies above the moors continue to be busy with helicopters, working as quickly as they can, taking advantage of every good weather window. On the ground, meanwhile, sociallydistanced works parties, working in “cells” are hard at work constructing the dams. The dams are used to block drainage channels called grips and gullies to help slow the flow of water, reducing the risk of flooding, as well as helping to rewet the moors. This in turn improves the health of the moorland, providing a better habitat for the bog plants that live there.

Events to raise funds for Captain Tobias’ chair AN event called ‘Just for Tobias’ is to take place, with proceeds going towards a specially adapted car chair for ‘Captain’ Tobias Weller. Tobias featured in a recent edition of Look Local after raising an incredible £150,000 for Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Paces Special School in High Green. Tobias’ mum wants to buy him a specially adapted car seat at a cost of £7,500 and local community consultant Kathy Marwick has arranged two free online Facebook events to help raise these funds.

On Sunday November, there will be an event at 2pm with the amazing John Taylor and on Sunday November 29 at 2pm, local duo Stevie Moore and Patricia Lynn will perform. There will be an hour of live music at both events and you can donate to the fund at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/janet-thornton-1 The nine-year-old has caught the attention of the nation with this Marathon Challenges – walking 26.2 miles in March, April and May and running a further marathon using a race runner in June and July culminating in

a Yorkshire Day finish on 1 August alongside Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill. The money is being split between his two favourite charities – Paces, the High Green special school where he is a pupil, and Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where he regularly visits for treatment. Tobias has Cerebral Palsy and Autism and cannot walk or stand unaided. But, during the coronavirus lockdown, he wanted to challenge himself.

Valley Music Festival grants awards to young musicians

MUCH music-making has been silenced by the pandemic - but local youngsters have been given a boost to keep their ambitions alive. Organisers of the Valley Music Festival have announced that the awards to help young people with their music tuition have been increased from four to eight. The doubling of the scholarships follows a huge response to a JustGiving appeal which ran in tandem with a virtual event on YouTube when the lockdown halted plans for an expanded festival in the summer. The JustGiving appeal raised an amazing £4,250 - more than double the target figure and means eight young people have received £250 each for music lessons in 2020 to 2021. The Dransfield Foundation, the charitable arm of Fox Valley owner Dransfield Properties, has contributed to the fund. Six girls and two boys have received grants for singing, piano and guitar lessons. Singers receiving scholarships are Karina Butterly, Olivia Froggatt and Charlie Taylor all three at Stocksbridge High School - Freja Hirst and Rhona Hirst at UTC, Sheffield, and Emily Tomlinson at Bradfield. Alice Stavert-Dobson, of Stocksbridge High, is having piano lessons and Cailean Simpson, also of Stocksbridge High, is to have guitar lessons. The JustGiving appeal was swelled by many people who were paying tribute to the late Steve Osborn whose untimely death at age 65 on the day of the virtual festival shocked the community. Steve, a driving force with his wife Hilary behind the festival, died in hospital after a short illness and had been deeply involved in the planning of the virtual festival along with his son-in-law Steve Franklin.

As a lasting tribute, a trophy will be awarded annually to a young group or school in Steve’s memory. The Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir Raymond English trophy, donated by Raymond’s family, is awarded annually to the most promising young person or group taking part in the festival. More than 1,600 people logged on to watch the virtual festival. Graham Elliott, a member of the festival organising committee, said of the scholarships: “At a time when we are aware of the difficulties facing the whole community we are proud of being able to not only support the young people and their families but also contribute to supporting music teachers many of whom are struggling to maintain their incomes during this time when the self-employed are facing a difficult situation. “Hopefully, in whatever form the festival is delivered in 2021, we shall with local people’s continued wonderful support be able to carry on providing opportunities to showcase the talent which exists in the Valley and also provide further financial support to our young people to access the lessons they deserve.” Festival director Hilary Osborn said: “Our family have been so comforted by the money raised in Steve’s name. He was a very humble, caring man who would have been amazed at people’s response and so pleased to have been able to support so many young people on their musical journeys, especially during these difficult times. “Steve was passionate about making opportunities for young people. He always took great interest in how youngsters developed and progressed in their careers. He was a calming influence and supportive of young people taking music exams in his role as rep for London College of Music Exams and took great pleasure in their achievements and was proud to have been involved.”

Why did Sheffield once again get a rough deal? Fair play to those who challenged this and argued greater local restrictions need to be supported with greater financial support - and yet they were shot-down by people like our local MP Miriam Cates. I would have thought a local MP should be a champion of local causes? Just when it seemed like the Tories had finally started to treat the north equally to the south, the last few months have proven this to be completely false. It’s the same old north-south divide and it’s not good enough.

As a club we have continued to grow despite the pandemic. We have seen some real promise with our our age grade teams. This is testament to the commitment of the coaches and parents.

It is the only chance I have to go out and I look forward to my weekly shopping trip with them. The drivers are always pleasant, helpful and cheerful and help to make the journeys enjoyable.

Stay safe, stay fit and stay healthy. Please encourage your players to retain their fitness whilst in lockdown and hopefully we will be able to pick up where we left on in four weeks time.

It’s outrageous that when northern places had to deal with tighter restrictions - causing many local people to be furloughed, especially in the hospitality sector - only 66% of the wages were backed by the government. But now the whole country is under more restrictions it’s back up to 80% again!

Monthly Wellbeing Corner By Ged Jenkins-Omar, best selling author of ‘Help with Anxiety’ available on Amazon. Hello. Following the trend of uncertainty that this year continues to throw up, things have changed once again from my last column. We are now in the midst of a national lockdown and the nights are dark and the days are colder. Gyms, pubs and restaurants are closed and there are not many places to go. Contact between families and friends has been restricted and things are all a bit gloomy. All of this can have a negative impact on how we are feeling, no matter how tough a cookie we normally are. So, what can we do to get through the winter months? Well,

we can start by doing stuff that makes us happy. When you look at your life, what makes you happy? Is it speaking to your children or grandchildren? Is it writing? Painting? Cooking? Exercising? Is it watching films? Reading a book? Learning new things? Playing games? Or is it something else? Whatever makes you happy, indulge in it during this winter season. If you haven’t got a hobby, maybe it’s time to pick one up. If you have time on your hands and have always wanted to learn the guitar, learn it. Try creating new recipes from that cookbook that’s been gathering dust at the back of the cupboard.

Or start writing that book you’ve always wanted to write. Whatever it is, focus on something that interests you and you feel good doing. Not only can hobbies be enjoyable but they can also help to refocus your worrying mind away from any anxious thoughts you may be having, diverting them on to the task in hand. This can allow you some stress-free relief from what may be an otherwise stressful time for you. In addition to this, completing tasks that we enjoy can also fill us with a sense of achievement. This natural feel-good reward can help to boost our mood and raise our positivity levels. Although things may be difficult, it’s also worth remembering to laugh through the hard times.

If you are having a bad day or week then watch something that truly makes you belly laugh. Studies have shown that laughing triggers the release of endorphins which are known as the body’s natural feel-good chemicals and also act as natural pain relief. So, the next time you feel yourself feeling stressed, under pressure or generally down, stick a comedy on, watch some YouTube clips or find something that makes you laugh out loud. Do what makes you happy. Laugh, eat that chocolate bar, have that hot toddy and put those feet up. Stay healthy but treat yourself this winter. Please note: This article is for educational purposes only and should not replace proper medical advice. If you

are experiencing anxiety or any other mental health illness then please speak to your doctor.

Streets Ahead prepares for winter THE council’s highways contractor, Amey, is getting ‘winter ready’ in preparation for cold and icy weather over coming months.

As part of the Streets Ahead programme, Amey are responsible for keeping the city’s hilly road network safe and moving over the winter period, as freezing conditions return. With 19 gritting vehicles already on standby, 24-hours-a-day, seven days a week until next May, Streets Ahead is ready to keep the city

moving if and when snowy weather arrives.

preparation for dealing with whatever the weather may have in store.

And with the colder temperatures starting to creep in, the gritters have already undergone their annual service to make sure they are in shape for the winter maintenance season.

Last winter, despite the lack of any significant snowfall, Streets Ahead completed 129 grit runs, spreading almost 7,500 tonnes of grit on the city’s roads. The salt dome holds 9,500 tonnes of grit, ensuring that supplies never run low when they are needed the most.

The Streets Ahead gritting vehicles spread grit and plough before, during and after it snows and Sheffield’s two salt barns, based at the Olive Grove depot, are already full in

information about their condition and if they needed re-filling. Over 2000 grit bins were checked over the summer to make sure they were full ahead of the winter months.

This year, Amey are asking junior school children to take part in a creative competition which could see their design emblazoned on the side of one of the gritting vehicles. With both Gertie the Gritter and Sammy Snow needing a new coat, Sheffield youngsters are being tasked with designing vehicle

Earlier in the year, the Streets Ahead Area Highways Representatives carried out an audit of the grit bins in their area, collating real time

wraps, that will be attached to the gritting lorries this winter. For more information about gritting routes, grit bin locations and winter advice, visit www.sheffield. gov.uk/winter , call 0114 273 4567 or follow @sccstreetsahead on Twitter for real-time updates during bad weather and to report empty grit bins. Quadruple success for local karate club

DESPITE being in Lockdown from March, four local students of Chapeltown Karate Club have refused to give up their long term ambition to reach their ultimate goal, which is to reach First Dan Black Belt after almost five years of hard work.

Their lockdown training consisted of outdoor sessions and Zoom sessions which were held by their Chief Instructor and Owner of C.K.C. Sensei Gary Baker.

Gary said: “Our unrivalled 100% pass rate is the result of a team effort which includes the students themselves, their parents and a phenomenal coaching team at the club.

Their perseverance and never-giveup spirit throughout these difficult times has seen them succeed.

The successful students are Jaden Rowley, Holly Womersley, Jake Barsby-Wyatt and Libby Hill. When Government guidelines allow, C.K.C. will be looking at taking on new starters. With that in mind and to register your interest in future classes, please email gary@chapeltownkarateclub.co.uk or visit www.chapeltownkarateclub.co.uk for more information.

He said: “I’ve been working in the building trade getting up at ten to six every morning and getting home for half past five. “It’s a reality check but it is what it is - we just have to crack on with it, there’s nothing else we can do.”

Howarth, a league winner with the Owlerton club in 2017, is an early riser these days and has been trying to keep his income going with alternative work following the cancellation of the British season.

£579.00

He has reported no reaction from the shoulder he damaged last year and has since had surgery. “It’s been hard for everyone obviously,” he said. “I’ve had to have an operation but it’s one that needed to be done and sorted to make life easier for me in numerous ways. “Now it’s done the shoulder feels great. To be back trackside with those pre-meeting nerves was great. I’ve really missed it. “I’ve been sitting at home doing nothing on week nights twiddling my thumbs thinking about what track I was meant to be at that night.” Howarth insists he has no plans to retire and focus on the building trade and can’t wait for next season, hoping for a spring start. “It’s made me realise how much I miss my racing,” he said. “I want to get back to it but we have to get through the winter first.” Club bosses are planning a Premiership start over the Easter weekend in April and will be keeping a close eye on the football situation and when fans are allowed to return to venues in elite sport.
